"Galaxy Of Terror"

Myths.

Legends.

Nightmares.

Every culture has tales of horrendous deeds, the monsters that perpetrated them, and the unholy places where they ocurred. Over the ages, these tales change with every retelling, growing more outlandish and eventually becoming part of our public subconcious.

But, what the modern, civilized peoples of the galaxy forget in the bright light of day......is that these tales all started as recollections of actual people, places, and events....

...encounters with spaceborne, parasitic creatures that gestate within still living hosts...

...a visit to a world where the dead walk and hunger for the flesh of the living...

...the discovery of a race of ravenous, extragalactic creatures that can skeletonize an adult Wookiee in minutes...

...a horror from the dawn of the Sith Order that would eventually extend it's reach across the void of space to cast it's foul shadow on a small blue world called "Earth"...

...an order of self-mutilated religious zealots violently spreading their "Holy Word" across an unsuspecting galaxy...

...ancient creatures that live off of the lifeforce of others...

...the mockery of life that is an insane droid who murders sentients and then wears a casing of their flesh to "feel alive"...

...a murdered pirate resurrected by a demented doctor to terrorize the spacelanes again...

...a Jedi, driven into the darkness by the horrors he witnessed during the Clone Wars, becomes the devil himself to the primitive inhabitants of a far off world...

This Fall, from the creator of "Through The 'Gate, Lies Adventure..." comes a continuing line of customs and storylines exploring the darker side of a galaxy far, far away...

Not for kids...

Not for the squeamish...

Not your everyday customs...

Beyond the Empire. Beyond the Rebellion. In the dark places between the stories you all know and love, lies a "Galaxy Of Terror"....

The Naz'Gul

In the deep, dark, distant history of the Galaxy, an ancient menace arose on the forbidding world of Korriban. Thousands of years before lightsabers, before blasters, even before interplanetary travel united the civilized Galaxy under the Old Republic, the first Dark Lord of what would evolve into the Sith Order arose and terrorized his world with his unholy followers.

Darth Sau'ron, one fo the first beings in the universe to recognize and harness the power of the Force, spent his lifetime learning his craft and hungering for power. Extending his own life far beyond the normal span of his race, he began to amass followers and take the most powerful as his personal students of the Dark Side. Using Sith alchemy and meditation, Darth Sau'Ron developed a method of infusing objects with the pure focused power of the Force, making terrible weapons and nearly impervious suits of armor. Darth Sau'Ron also crafted a "ring of power" for himself and lesser rings for his nine most loyal warriors. Warriors who came to be known as the Naz'Gul, or "black death" in the Sith tongue. These rings would ensure immortality and almost limitless power to their wearers.

But the lesser rings were also curses for their bearers. To prevent the possibility of the Naz'Gul ever betraying Sau'Ron, the rings would ensure that the Naz'Gul could never become more powerful than their master. Over the long centuries of their existance, the Naz'Gul began to physically diminish, eventually becoming little more than wraiths forever trapped within their black Sith robes and ancient alchemical armor. For centuries after their diminishment, the Naz'Gul, continued to haunt and terrorize Korriban, even long after their Dark Master discovered the Ch'appai (Stargate) hidden deep within their planet and traversed the void to another world to expand his empire. Before leaving Korriban, Darth Sauron, chose Mor'Gal, the mightiest of his Naz'Gul, and declared him King of the Naz'Gul. Mor'Gal would rule Korriban in his absence and ensure that the Sith would always worship Sau'Ron.

The terror of the Naz'Gul was finally contained when a star containing a diminutive green being fell from the heavens. The green being, calling herself a "Jedi", repelled the horrible Naz'Gul's attacks and battled them back into their fearsome mountain keep. The "Jedi" sacrificed her own life essence to collapse their keep into the deep caverns that ran through the mountain below. The Naz'Gul were not destroyed, for it is not believed that they can ever truly be destroyed while their Dark Lord still lives, but were contained, buried unter tons of rock and bound by the light side of the Force.

Across the gulf of intergalactic space, Darth Sau'Ron emerged from the liquid light of the Ch'appai to find himself on a virgin world. A small blue green sphere that the indiginous life called "Earth". A world rich in what they called "magic", but what Darth Sau'Ron recognized as the power of the Force. A world that he could bend to his will and rule over as he had Korriban. He set about using Sith alchemy and the power of the Dark Side to corrupt the luminous beings that he found in the deep woods into something more to his liking. Darth Sauron also found nine power hungry beings calling themselves "men" that pledged their undying loyalty to him. These "men" would serve him well as his new Naz'Gul.

As Darth Sau'Ron began to build his new empire on this world, his seat of power, the birthplace of his new empire, he decreed would bear as it's name the Sith word for "mother".......Mordor......

Across the far reaches of the outer rim, spoken in hushed whispers, are tales of a ravenous extragalactic life-form that can skeletonize a grown Wookiee in a matter of minutes.

A life-form first discovered on a derelict starship of unknown design, which travels from world to world in the cargo holds of unsuspecting tramp freighters, waiting to be released on another helpless ecosystem.

A species that replicates so quickly that they seem to be born pregnant, reproducing at an exponential rate so as to completely overwhelm an entire capital ship in a matter of hours, eating any organic matter they encounter to fuel their insane metabolic rates.

A species that at first appears harmless, even cute, purring for attention.........until they start to feed....

Pray that your world never falls victim to the scourge of the spaceways.....

Pray that you never encounter..........

TRIBBLES!!!!!!!!

"Careful guys! If you break anything in these boxes, our uncle will kill us!"

"Oh come on, what could possibly happen....oooops...."

"What do you think these things are?"
"I don't know, but they look pretty cute."
"They're purring. They must be hungry...."

"What the.....!?!?!?!"
"FRAK ME!"
"Oh shi....."

"Purrrrrr.....gobble.....purrr........"

"Purrrrr......burp......purrrrrrrr....."

Excerpt from personal log of Professor Ronuld D'Moor, Exoarchaelogist:

We found the ship encased in an ancient magma flow on Nomen that we radiodated to be between one hundred and one hundred forty thousand years old. It was of a completely unknown, alien design. When we freed it from the volcanic rock and gained entrance to the cockpit, we were shocked to find it's inhabitants were droids, ancient yet highly advanced, droids. They appeared to be in pristine condition despite the millenia that they were enased in solid rock.

When Dr. Espens'n tried to remove one of them from it's gravity chair, a single red photoreceptor came to life and began to move from one side of it's eyeslit to the other, back and forth, taking in it's surroundings. The droid suddenly stood up, taking the shocked Dr. Espens'n by the throat and breaking her neck with one squeeze of it's manipulator hand. The droid spoke in a heavily synthesized, chilling, monotone. It said: "Colonial survivors located, death to the humans." With this statement, the other two droids sprung to life, their red photoreceptors humming back and forth while replying: "By your command" in that same, horrifying monotone. They began systematically killing the research crew inside their ship, then began with the larger crew in the camp outside.

They swept through our camp, killing defensless scientists, including women and several students that were volunteering at the dig. They used everything at their disposal to commit mass murder. They used their ancient blasters, their bare hands and even their sabers, wich we had taken to be more or less ceremonial at first glance. They slaughtered everyone. When several people tried to flee in speeders or in our lone shuttle, they summoned a fourth, much larger and more heavily armed droid that proceeded to destroy the fleeing vehicles with the same emotionless "By your command" response the others had given. It used a heavy mag-pro cannon that it had in place of a right hand and a shoulder mounted mortar-like weapon to blow all of them to dust. It was hopeless. These four droids had decimated us.

They only halted their murderous acts momentarily when coming apon some of our non-human crew members. The silver droids looked them up and down, then turned to their gleaming golden leader and stated that they had discovered anomalous life forms that did not conform to their targets. The golden droid took only a second to contemplate the fate of these helpless individuals and said: "Non-Cylon, terminate as if human". Again, the same horrible "By your command", and then screams as my teammates died at the hands of these soulless killing machines.

When they were done, only our droids were left as these primitive machine kin of the killers were spared. I only managed to survive by covering myself with the bodies of my friends until the killers left in their now freed ship. To this day, I have nightmares every night of gleaming death machines chanting their mantra: "By your command".....

Excerpt from personal log of Professor Glenna Larzin, Exoarchaelogist:

We found the specimen buried in a cave deep in Tattooine's Dune Sea. It was unlike anything we had ever seen before, part of an ancient yet highly advanced droid, buried in sediment we radiodated to be over 100,000 standard years old. The droid appeares to have been felled by a blaster-like weapon but there are no cultures known to have had that type of technology so far back in antiquity. We were unable to find the rest of the droid, nor any weapons or other technology in the general area of the discovery.

The local Jawa poplation tells of an ancient story from their early ancestors of a pair of stars that fell to the ground and the strange beings that emerged from them, beings that waged war amongst themselves with terrible lightning-like weapons. One of the beings- the only one that did not gleam in the light of the suns, referred to as "The Starrbukk", either having killed the others or simply outliving them, lived for many years alone in the desert until he, too, expired- disappearing in a flash of white light. Could this strange droid actually be one of the characters from this ancient tale?

Apon returning the find to the ship, I consulted via holonet with Professor Ronuld D'Moor, who had himself found strange droids a few years ago entombed in ancient magma on Nomen, droids that slaughtered his entire camp. When I sent him the holofiles containing images of the find, he began shrieking and shut off the transmission. According to an administrator of his university, he was found barricaded in his office in a state of hysteria screaming insanely about destroying our find. He was sent off to a local exopsychological institute where he is currently under observation after having scratched his fingers to the bone while scrawling the phrase "By your command" over and over on all of the walls of his office.

We are no longer in posession of our find as it was confiscated by some shady government types who claimed it in the interest of New Republic Security. We have no idea where it is but I just hope that they lock it away somewhere and no one has the bright idea to try to reactivate it....

Transmission from Professor H. Johnz, Exoarchaeologist to Joh Kolton, Leader Of The Adventure Team:

Rumors surrounding the doomsday Cult Of Cthulhu go back thousands of years to pre-Old Republic times. Most modern scholars believe that Cthulhu is nothing but a legend, but others, particularly those studying the Force and it's impact on galactic history disagree. They believe that the power of Cthulhu is deeply rooted in what would become known as the "dark side" or even the Sith teachings, but predates both concepts by tens of thousands of years.

The basic premise is this:

Cthulhu, one of the "Old Ones", existed long before any species now existing gained sentience and his starspawned ilk dominated the universe for time untold. Eventually, their society and their power waned and Cthulhu took up residence in his massive city R'lyeh, which sunk beneath the waves. No one is sure just exactly which planet R'lyeh exists on, or even that it exist on any one planet in any one galaxy. Some theories suggest that R'lyeh either exists across multiple points in space and time simultaneously or that it periodically shifts location by some yet unknown, possibly mystical, means.

The Cult Of Cthulhu seeks to find R'lyeh and awaken the sleeping God. They are believed to have cells on just about any planet with a sizable body of water on it but are supposedly focusing on planets that are more or less covered with water such as Mon Calamari, Dak and Aquos. They hope to awaken Cthulhu with incantations from a tome known as the "Necronomicon". The Necronomicon is an arcane text older than any known book in the galaxy and is said to be bound in flesh and written in blood. No one knows how many copies exist or if the book even truly exists at all, but it is known that the Emperor was searching for a copy shortly before his demise over Endor.

The cult is noted for chanting its horrid phrase or ritual: "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", which translates as "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." This is often shortened to "Cthulhu fhtagn", which might possibly mean "Cthulhu waits", "Cthulhu dreams", or "Cthulhu waits dreaming."

The Cult's activcities have increased in the years following the death of Emperor Palpatine, it is feared that they may have found the location of R'lyeh and plan on carrying out their dark plans. That is why If the Cult ever succeeds in waking the Old Ones, the Galaxy as we know it will be doomed...

The Star('Gate) Wars Trilogy: Episode I- "Through The 'Gate, Lies Advenure...."

Excerpt from the mission log of Melinda Carras, exoarchaeologist (audio only):

"To anyone who finds this, I am making this recording so that someone will know the fates of not only myself, but my team and the brave New Republic soldiers assigned to protect us. On this remote desert world, we had a chance encounter with a magnificent yet terrifying, hitherto unknown alien empire...[sounds of sobbing]...but I'm getting ahead of myself. I should start at the beginning...[sounds of sobbing]

In the last days of major fighting in the Galactic Civil War, word got out through our spy network that Emperor Palpatine was commandeering scientific and archaeology teams for deployment to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Intelligence suggested that he was looking for objects of power pulled from the legends and mythologies of a thousand different cultures. Most of these teams returned empty handed as the objects they sought were indeed just myth, but word got round the scientific comminuty that some objects had been found and were being turned into weapons to use against the Rebellion. Whether or not this was truth or heresay became a moot point with Palpatine's death over Endor a few weeks ago.

With Palpatine's death, the Imperial forces were shattered. Several Sector Moffs and high-ranking officers withdrew their troops to establish their own "mini-Empires" across the galaxy and utilized the forces that were under their direct command to fortify their homeworlds which now became their throneworlds. The smuggler and sometime Rebel agent, Daxxon Ral, intercepted a transmission from Moff Sarna to an Imperial military unit guarding one of Palpatine's science teams on the outer rim desert world of Giza. The officer in charge claimed that they were only days away from opening the ziggurat that the Emperor claimed contained an object of immense power and requested that they be allowed to remain and finish their mission. The officer was told to pack up and get off planet immediately, and followed his new orders as any good soldier does.

The New Republic high command wanted this planet and it's mysterious ziggurat investigated and ordered the light cruiser Fantastic to take a unit of scientists there immediately. When my team and I arrived, we found the Imperial base abandoned, but with all of the scientific equipment left behind in their rush to follow Moff Sarna's command, including an enormous sonic bore unit. We inspected the entryway to the ziggurat, and confirmed that the Empire's team was just hours away from opening it. As we were about to open it ourselves we received a message from the Fantastic that they were being recalled to support an uprising against the Imperial Remnant in a nearby system. We convinced the fantastic's commanding officer Capt. Reid Ri'Chards, to allow us and the unit assigned to us to remain, and he being a scientist himself before the Galactic Civil War, allowed us to finish what Palpatine's team had started.

We gained entrance to the ziggurat quite easily and were at once amazed by what we found inside when casting our glowrods about. After passing through a short passageway, we came to an elegant round polished sandstone throneroom containing a throne composed of an unknown metal resembling copperoid or bronzium and adorned with an enormous crest containing an engraving of an eye. There was also a copperoid/bronzium gong stand and a marble-like pillar supporting a chunk of sandstone engraved with an ancient, pictographic, language that our research and translation droids could not identify. I asked one of our research droids, ES-PN8 (who we refer to as "Ocho"), to make a holographic recording of the symbols. Just off this chamber we found a spiraling passageway heading down to another level...

This second level was an open centered ring the exact size of the chamber above, and presumably, directly below it. Apon entering this level, we were confronted by a massive, 4 meter high statue of a humanoid with a canine head or helmet carrying a deadly looking staff. This statue was composed of a similar material to the rest of the temple and adorned with decorations made from the same unknown alloy as the items upstairs. Further along the ring, we found a second staue of another humanoid, but this time with a much more human contenance. This statue was also composed of the same sandstone as the first one, but was embellished with a beautiful golden metal that was the very embodiment of royalty. We continued across the ring level and just prior to reaching the passageway to the lower level, we encountered a mushroom shaped device that was topped with several interlocking, segmented discs covered with symbols even more outlandish than those on the stone tablet above. I again instructed Ocho to make a holographic recording of the symbols for further study. One of my team shined his glowrod down into the abyss over the edge of the ring to see what was below us but the light seemed to be completely swallowed up by the ominous darkness below. We forged ahead and began our decent to the next level...

Apon reaching this bottom-most level, we discovered yet more unusual devices- stations of unknown purpose flanked either side of the chambers entrance just inside the doorway, and more machinery could be glimpsed in the back of the chamber through hazy beams from our glowrods. One of my team remarked that while the stations contained items that were obviouly meant to be manipulated, they bore no markings of any kind indicating what their purpose was nor any way to indicate settings of any kind. Our exo-biologist suggested that whomever built these devices might see in a different spectrum than we do and the markings could very well be there, just invisible to our eyes. He also remarked that there could be markings and artwork all around us and we would never even know it. I made a note to have a spectral analyzer brought down to the surface when the Fantastic returned from her emergency mission. As we probed deeper into the room we came apon a bronzium/copperoid ramp leading up to an enormous upright ring made from an unknown black stone. This ring was covered with symbols along it's inner edge that Ocho assured me matched the symbols on the mushroom shaped device upstairs...[sounds of sobbing]

That's when this whole terrible ordeal really began....

Everything started vibrating to the point where we had to hold onto each other or the machines to remain on our feet. This vibration increased and we began to notice everything getting brighter. The very stones that made up the ziggurat began to glow from within until it was bright as day throughout the entire temple! Then a massive shockwave exploded from the center of the ring, knocking most of us flat on our backs. What appeared to be a horizontal geyser of silvery blue liquid had burst forth from the opening in the center of the ring and quickly subsided until it became an upright disc resembling an internally lit pond. We stared at it in total amazement....then THEY began to emerge from the disc's liquid surface...."

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Sept. 14, 1996:

"In the weeks since Col. O'Neil's team departed for Earth through the Stargate, I have begun helping the people of Abydos learn to rule themselves and develop their culture in the light of their new-found freedom from Ra's oppression. I have also made amazing discoveries within the structures here. I discovered a chamber deep within the pyramid containing thousands of square feet of records dating back hundreds of thousands (possibly even millions!) of years!

Since my "death" and "rebirth" in Ra's sarcophagus, I am able to speak, read, and write the language of Ra's people. A language that in turn became the language of his subjects in ancient Egypt. I have uncovered some amazing facts about both Ra's culture and it's influence on our own world in the distant past. Ra's race are known as the "Egyptions", which makes sence that he would name his kingdom on Earth "Egypt" (possibly the name of his homeworld?) and his people would adopt that name for both themselves and their language.

I was able to confirm a suspicion I had overheard back on Earth that the military and their scientists pondered the existance of other Stargates scattered across space. I have found a golden bound tome containing over two hundred thousand Stargate "addresses" that can be "dialed" into the 'Gate: Korriban, Mongo, Q'Onos, Zenn-La, Kobol, Rann, Sheshareem, the list goes on and on. The very names themselves cause my mind to wander and imagine what types of beings may inhabit their surfaces, are they possibly other decendants of man like the people here on Abydos, and if they are, are they free or were they also enslaved by Ra?

I have also uncovered many facts about the Stargate itself, or the "Ch'appai" in Ra's tongue. The Egyptions did not create the Stargates or the subspace wormhole network that connects them to each other. According to the records unearthed, they were the product of a long dead race known simply as "the Ancients" and were utilized by many different cultures to traverse and colonize the known universe for millions of years. Some cultures were named in these records and their very names (the Yautja, the Forerunners- with whome the Egyptions fought a bloody centuries-long war, the Drej, etc.) would make all of the sci-fi fans back home giddy while imagining vast starfaring empires.

Just this morning, I found what appears to be a diary of sorts that could very well have been written by Ra's own hand (possibly even by the hand left behind on the transport ring pad upstairs when I was beamed out of Ra's ship) detailing an event that he refers to as "The Great Betrayal"...

Diorama overview:

The throneroom:

The statue level:

The 'Gateroom:

This is one of the biggest things I have ever assembled! It measures three and a half feet tall, almost two feet wide, and two and a half feet deep (at the base). I eventually want to add a ceiling to the throneroom with the transport ring assembly in the center of it (the transport field generating bottom part of which can be seen on the ceiling of the second level in the pic of the back of the Anubis statue), but there appear to be no more Jedi Council sets anywhere in the tri-state area Sad

The entire diorama was sprayed with almond spraypaint and weathered with a very light grey (although the weathering is so subtle that it's almost invisible in the pics Sad ).

Enjoy Cheesy

UPDATE:  Sadly, in my recent move, this diorama got smashed to bits. I have all of the pieces and am going to rebuild it soon....with some improvements..... Lips Sealed

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

"[Sounds of sobbing increase]....Gods....it all happened so fast....They came pouring out of the "liquid disc" at the center of the stone ring, barking at us in a harsh, electronically filtered language that was so completely alien to us and firing their terrible weapons. Weapons so ornate as to almost be deadly works of art, firing amber colored bursts of energy that travelled slower than a blaster bolt but exploded with incredible force...[sounds of sobbing increase again]...they cut down our soldier escort so quickly that only one soldier managed to get a shot off before being disembowelled by an amber blast. His shot simply glanced off the shoulder armor of one of the aggressive new arrivals. Some of the Warriors brandished serpent-shaped pistols made from a silvery purple alloy that they used to fire double bursts of blue white energy that felled the soldiers they hit, killing them without leaving a mark!

I'll do my best to describe these alien soldiers...they wore a grey uniform that appeared to be a form of flexible, lightweight armor, over which they wore thicker armor made from the same now-familiar copperoid/bronzium alloy we saw all over this temple. This copperoid/bronzium armor consisted of ornate breastplates, a pair of shoulder epaulets, a forearm guard on their right arms, a sword scabbard on their backs, and massive insectoid helmets each with a large central "eye" that seemed to glow a soft metallic blue from within. Their weapons, aside from the small pistols, were also crafted from the copperoid/bronzium alloy and came in many different shapes and sizes from small carbine sized weapons to massive heavy rifles almost as long as the warrior was tall.

These Warriors attacked with such ferocity, they blasted their way through the soldiers and then advanced on my unarmed science team shouting at us in their terrible, incomprehensible language....[sounds of sobbing]..the Warriors carrying the longest rifles advanced, and with a flick of their wrists, a massive meter long shimmering blade seemed to grow out of the bottom of their rifles' stocks! The warriors carrying the lighter weapons pulled the now-shimmering swords from their scabbards and joined thier more heavily armed comrads. These blades sliced through my team and our droids as if they were flimsiplast...[sounds of sobbing for several minutes]...I can still hear their screams....it was terrible. I hid behind one of the strange stations beside the chamber entryway, shaking and fearing for my life....afraid to try and make a run for the doorway...just knowing one of those cruel impassive warriors would cut me down either by blast or by blade....[uncontrollable sounds of sobbing]

...just as quickly as it all began, the screams of my team ended signifying the end of the Warriors' attack...it was quiet as a tomb...a fitting analogy for both the carnage that had just happened and the carnage that would come in a few short days....[sounds of sobbing]...but I'm getting ahead of myself again...got to keep my thoughts in order so this will make sense to whoever finds it...

[sounds of sobbing coming under control]I made myself as small as I could hiding behind that station, but they found me anyway. Rough, unforgiving hands seized my arms and hauled me savagely to my feet...they tore off my clothes searching for weapons of any kind then struck me across the back of my knees with one of thier weapons knocking me to the floor. One of the Warriors forced me into a kneeling position and then pushed my face almost into the floor...He then pulled my hair to force me to look up towards the shimmering disc at the top of the ramp....just in time to see the most magnificent and terrifying beings I have ever laid eyes on emerge from it's liquid surface...."

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Sept. 21, 1996:

"Jaffa".

The Soldiers Of The Gods. Ra's footsoldiers in his campaign of universal domination. These savage warriors are handpicked from the ranks of the slaves, gladiators, and followers he and his race kept all across the galaxy. Conditioned to be brutal and unforgiving against not only Ra's enemies but to thier own people if so ordered by their cruel master.

When we encountered Ra a few weeks ago, he only had less than a dozen warriors with him. This can be attributed to the fact that the followers he had here on Abydos lived in total fear of Ra and his retribution if they ever disobeyed him. He would probably have brought far more if he was visiting a planet where he did not have total sway over the population.

According to some of the data I have uncovered, the main weapons carried by the Jaffa (staff or otherwise) utilize solar radiation as their power source and ammunition. Fitting since on earth Ra was worshipped as a sun god. These weapons fire compressed packets of solar energy, energy compressed to the point where it exists as a superheated plasma that devestates anything it hits (particularly devestating to human flesh as I can personally attest to). The butt-end of the staffs at least (I was not able to observe any other weapons in our encounter- were they phased out in favor of the staffs?) contained an inertial multiplier that allowed even the slightest jab to hit with the force of a jackhammer as I'm sure Col. O'neil will agree (I wonder if his ribs have healed yet?).

There were also other weapons in the Jaffa arsenal including blades that vibrate with such ferocity that they can cut through the hardest armor as if it were paper and a small serpentine pistol that, as far as I can tell anyway, is the only Egyption weapon that has a non-lethal setting.

I noticed a pretty radical difference in the description of the Jaffa in older texts than from what I personally observed. The ones I saw were adorned with helms that bore the visage of Horus and the captain of the guard wore a helm that bore the visage of Anubis, while the Jaffa described in texts from up until about 10,000 years ago all wore the same design helmet. Their helmet bore a slight insectoid appearance but does not match up with any known Egyptian diety. What could have happened that suddenly caused such a radical change?

Come to think of it, the change in Jaffa armor design seems to occur right after the event referenced to as "The Great Betrayal"...

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

"As I kneel on the cool stone floor, naked and crying, one after another they came down the ramp resplendant in their beautiful colored robes. But even more majestic than their robes were the gleaming, ornate enclosed headdresses they wore, each in the visage of some form of animal. While not animals entirely familiar to me, the helms had elements of animal classes that could be found on any of a million worlds: feline, hawkbat, dragonsanke, avian, etc. Trailing behind each glorious animal-helmed being was a small entourage of female attendants, dressed far more simply in skirts of the sheerest, brightest white material I have ever seen and wearing far less elaborate helms.

As they proceeded down the ramp, each of the animal-helmed beings fixed me with a gaze of such shear power and contempt that it chilled me to the very core of my being while at the same time filling me with a sence of wonderment and a feeling of being in the presence of the very Gods themselves. Virtually every culture has legends of godlike beings that came from the sky to enlighten and advance their societies. Could these be the beings that inspired such tales? Could they actually be dieties of some form? My mind reeled at the thoughts running through it, and I reeled even further when HIS gaze fell apon me...

...I could not believe my eyes! The being standing over me, staring his cold yet majestic stare into my very soul, was the canine-headed being who's statue adorned the entryway of the level above us. This was not another being dressed in a similar helm, something in my soul told me that this was the SAME being! This temple had been hermetically sealed for over 10,000 years according to the records left behind in the Imperial basecamp, yet here was someone standing right in front of me who had walked these same halls ten millennia ago...

I know how crazy that sounds, but the universe is rife with long-lived beings. Hutts can live over a thousand years unless they fall prey to their own greed or an assassin's blade. We know Wookiees can live to be 400 or so if in good health, but the idea of a being that can live 10,000 or more years is unheard of in this galaxy. As I looked at this being, I could almost feel the weight of the years he has existed, I instantly felt as if I could learn to speak to these beings I could very well hear the stories from the beginning of time itself...

...it felt as if we stared at each other for eons, but in reality it was only a moment before he looked away from me as if I was an insect barely worthy of his attention and he moved on trailed by his followers. The next to stare at me was the lone female "diety" in this pantheon of the Ancient, a feline-helmed woman who even though I could not see her face, I knew she was the most beautiful woman in the universe..."

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Sept. 28, 1996:

I have uncovered some very interesting information that sheds some more light on Egyption culture and, while answering one question about the radical change in Jaffa uniforms, opens up many more...

"Anubis" or ("An'Ubis" in Egyption), the jackal-headed greeter of the dead in Egyptian mythology, and the visage worn by the captain of Ra's guards, was an actual individual in the Egyption High Court. An individual, who if these records are to be believed, was well over 750,000 years old at the time of his death (murder?)! I knew that Ra had to be (at the very least) 10,000 years old simply based on his involvement with human civilization, but I had no idea that Egyptions were so long lived!

One of the most brutal of Ra's court, An'Ubis was known to actually get into the gladatorial ring and engage in combat against the greatest of his captive warriors purely for his own enjoyment. One of the few "Gods" that will actually engage in battlefield combat alongside his soldiers, his battlecry is said to make his enemies' ears bleed and even freighten them to death before they ever feel his hands around their throats. The only warrior that ever claimed to have beaten An'Ubis in one on one combat was the sole Egyption that never "ascended to Godhood", the warrior only referenced in this document as "The Undying One"...

It looks to me that after An'Ubis' death or murder in the event referred to as "The Great Betrayal", Ra would honor the captain of his Jaffa forces with a helm in An'ubis' visage as An'Ubis was considered to be the most loyal Egyption member of Ra's court (although, surprisingly, Ra actually writes of a slave named "A'hks" with the closest emotion to fondness that I think he was actually capable of for someone who was so far "beneath" him...). If the awarding of an An'Ubis helm was such an honor, does the same hold true for the awarding of the Horus helms?....

An'Ubis:

Parts:
Body- Chap Mei "Pirates Expeditions" Skorpio Morgan (modded)
Head- "Stargate" (movie) Anubis (heavily modded)
Belt- "Stargate" (movie) Glider Pilot Horus (modded)
Bracers- Target Exclusive "Dino Warriors" villian w/ rubberband strap extensions
Zats Gun- "Stargate SG-1" Free Comic Book Day Col. O'Neil
Solar Staff- custom

It took alot of work to make that chunky, flimsy "Stargate" Anubis helmet work for this project. First I had to seal up the opening that all of the "Stargate" movie toys' helmets had that allowed the figures' faces to bee seen. I used part of the back of a dollar store knight's helmet (took about 6 tries to get it to fit seamlessly and look good Sad ) to seal up the hole and provide some cool detailing in the opening to match the general design of the rest of the helm. Then I had to coat the entire helmet twice with Dullcote (tm) because the rather oily-feeling plastic Hasbro used over a decade ago would not take the paint otherwise.

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

...as this feline-headded Goddess looked down apon me, I was suddenly filled with such dread that my heart almost stopped in my chest...while she was stunningly beautiful physically, I could feel nothing but pure evil and hatred within her...I shrank back as far as I could with the warriors' stonelike grip still on my hair and shoulder...I just knew I could not bear it if this beautiful monster had so much as brushed against my prone form...[sounds of sobbing]

As her attendants passed me following behind their Mistress, one young woman, more like a girl barely into her teens, stopped to drape the cloth she carried over one arm over my body. The feline headed woman whirled about with unbelievable speed, roared something at this kind young woman in their harsh language and struck her a blow across the chest with such force that the slim young woman flew several feet before crashing to the ground, her arm pinned beneath her, her shoulder clearly shattered....[sounds of sobbing]...this feline-headed woman was a beast...the remaining attendants dared not reach out with any kind of kindness to me as they and their masters passed.

After all of these magnificent beings and their attendants had passed behind me, everything fell silent save for the soft rythmic thrumming of the still active liquid portal. I sensed more than saw everyone turn to face the portal's disc...the soldiers not holding me down dropped to one knee and lowered their heads in respect...the attendants assumed a similar pose to my own, without having to be forced to....and the animal-helmed beings bowed their heads in respect...[sounds of sobbing]

...I shook in fear wondering what manner of being was about to emerge from that mercurial surface that could hold such sway over the likes of these....and then I saw....

...HE stepped out of the liquid silver....if it was even possible, he was brighter and more beautiful than that shimmering pool...he opened his arms and held his hands palm up...the assembeled warriors, slaves, and "Gods" shouted something deafening in unison...as hard as it was to tear my eyes from his beauty, I was even more astounded when I looked just over his head at the magnificent gold encrusted statue directly above and behind him....if these beings were "Gods", than this was THEIR "God"....

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Oct. 03, 1996:

"Bast" (or "B'Hast" in Egyption), the cruel cat-headed Goddess Of The Moon. According to the records I have just uncovered, not only did this "mythological character" exist, but she was the one-time paramour of our good friend Ra.

If these records are to be believed, she was also suspected of having relations with several of Ra's rivals and even conspired to assassinate Ra with the poisoined dagger she kept beneath her skirt and take her "rightfull" place on the Egyption throne. Nothing like good old royal court highjinks to spice up the historical texts. I'm still doing some digging in the records of this time period trying to ascertain just who she was conspiring with to kill Ra. I'd be willing to bet the last chocolate bar on Abydos that this plot is connected to the often-referenced event known as "The Great Betrayal"...

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Oct. 05, 1996:

"My research in this newfound treasure trove of knowledge continues to creat more questions than it answers, but I know all will eventually be revealed if I continue reading.

I found an interesting series of references yesterday as to what might be the prime reason Ra's race eventually died off. It seems that with their extreme longevity, came a biological hurdle that even they could not overcome: sterility. Was their longevity a natural part of their lifecycle or did they somehow extended their lives artificially? Gene manipulation? Did they know of some form of intergalactic "Fountain Of Youth"?, Magic? Nothing would really surprise me at this point. But as generation after generation failed to produce a sufficient number of offspring to keep their race going, and the aging Egyptions began to die off (either by natural causes or by warfare, assassinations, etc.), their race dwindled to the point that there were less than 100 known living Egyptions left prior to the event referred to as "The Great Betrayal"...

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

.....He stood there majestically surveying those assembled before him, and then he spoke....this was the same language that sounded so harsh when spoken by the Warriors, but from him it sounded so melodic and beautiful that it would have brought fresh tears to my eyes if I had not already been weeping from the situation I currently found myself in....after he was finished speaking the assembled throng again shouted in unison but this time I was able to make out what they were saying..."R'ah"....this HAD to be the name of this magnificent being, I was sure of it down to the very core of my soul...

He came down the ramp, moving so smoothly that he appeared to glide as if by repulsorlift. When he reached the bottom, he said something else in that beautiful language and all those assembled rose to their feet or lifted their heads...I noticed that the Warriors and attendants did not raise their heads enough to look directly at R'ah, as if they were not worthy to gaze apon his majesty.

R'ah and the "Gods" exchanged short speeches whose meanings were completely lost on me but seemed very heavy on ceremony due to all of the bowing and slow sweeping gentures with their hands. Suddenly, there was a sound like air rushing to fill a sudden vaccum and I returned my gaze to the top of the ramp only to see the liquid disc at the center of the stone ring was gone and the back wall of the temple with it's huge copperoid/bronzium relief of an eye was again visible through the open center of the ring.

One of the soldiers shouted something that I could not understand and all present in the room turned to face the stone ring just as everything again began to shake violently...another horizontal geyser erupted from the ring....[sounds of sobbing]...when the geyser subsided and the liquid disc again stabilized...a terrifying apparition stepped out of it's liquid surface....

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Oct. 09, 1996:

"Ra" (or "R'ah" in Egyption), the supreme ruler of the Gods, God of the sun, and feared intergalactic despot.

R'ah is the reason that I am here on Abydos today, as well as the reason that the Egyptian culture developed as it did in the first place. The writing that Sha'urri showed to me in the hidden chamber beneath her city told the story of a greedy, dying visitor, the last of his kind, that came to Earth looking for a way to extend his rapidly fading centuries-long life. After finding a way to "posess" the body of a young boy he discovered in northern Africa, he began to build a kingdom for himself that would eventually become what we know today as Egypt. R'ah took untold thousands of his "subjects" and relocated them to Abydos (and presumably other planets as well) to labor for him, mining the strange dark mineral that lies at the heart of all of his race's technology. After an undisclosed amount of time, his subjects on Earth revolted, overthrowing R'ah's forces and causing him to flee the Earth and return permanently to the stars. The newly freed Egyptians buried the Stargate deep in the sands and life went on.

While this story contains much useful information, I have discovered that it suffers from the same affliction as any story that is handed down from generation to generation: it changed somewhat from the original facts.  I have discovered records here in R'ah's storeroom that sometimes contradict the Abydossian version of the story but also add a whole wealth of previously unknown details...

One of the most shocking details, the one that I will address first, is the fact that the ancient Egyptians did not start the revolt against R'ah on their own. They were helped by a strange group of warriors that unexpectedly came through the Stargate one night. These warriors are said to have spoken a language that was incomprehensible, even to R'ah, and carried weapons unlike anything that had ever been seen before. Initially jailed by R'ah and sentenced to die, these strange warriors escaped, retrieved their strange weapons and fled into the desert accompanied by several hundred slaves. These warriors trained the slaves to become an army and led the initial attacks in the revolt. After R'ah fled, the warriors went home through the Stargate, instructing the now free Egyptians to bury the Stargate forever after they left.

Who were these warriors? Were they from another race that had over thrown the yolk of R'ah's rule? Or were they agents of the few remaining living Egyptions?

That's right, the most shocking revelation in these records is that R'ah was not the last of his kind as the Abydossians believed...

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

...standing at the top of the ramp was what I first took to be a horrendous new class of battledroid...until I saw it's eyes...and then I knew that it, or at least part of it, was once a man...[sounds of sobbing]....for the first time I was able to see the eyes of one of these strange visitors...and, oh Gods! [sounds of sobbing]...how I wish it had had it's eyes covered like all of it's bretheren...[sounds of sobbing]....those eyes held such age that I felt I could die, rot, and crumble to dust in the time it takes one such as this to blink...and when he looked at me...his eyes lit up brilliantly white and he made a horrible synthesized noise that could have ether been a word in their language or a grumble of disgust from deep within his throat...

After he took his gaze from me, he began moving down the ramp in an unsettling insectoid manner....his heavy mechanical body making dull thunking noises with each fall of his clawed feet...he carried an enormous, deadly-looking staff that, unlike the others, he did not carry proudly with it's blades held high...he held it almost casually at his side, horizontally, with it's wickedly sharp blades tapping against the floor in rythm with his footsteps...

...from behind him emerged 2 ornate yet deadly looking droids, eeriely similar in design to the mockery of life that they followed down the ramp...they carried the longest staffs yet seen, bulbous on one end and bladed on the other...their footsteps falling in perfect unison with the cyborg's....

...when he reached the bottom of the ramp, most of the "Gods" snorted in what I took to be disgust, but could just as easily been a greeting in their language for all I knew...only Ra greeted this newcomer with openness and anything resembling friendship, albiet simply, by raising his right hand and calling the newcomer by name...I shudder to think of the fear that ran through me at the very mention of this monster's name...[sounds of sobbing]...I had never heard a sound that evoked such pure evil before that I barely dare repeat it...but for the sake of history...I must...the monster's name was ....[sounds of sobbing]...."Im'Ho'Tep"....

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Oct. 14, 1996:

"Im Hotep" (or "Im'Ho'Tep" in the original Egyption), called "The Undying One" as he was the oldest living (if you can call the state he existed in as "living" anyway...) Egyption in history. If these documents are true and I'm not screwing up any of the mathematical conversions, Im'Ho'Tep was over 2 million years old!

Im'Ho'Tep's story is one of great tragedy that in turn leads to even greater atrocities over the span of more than 2 million years. In the long distant past, Im'Ho'Tep's lover, A'nk Su'Nam'un, was mortally injured when their homeworld was attacked by an alien army known as "The Covenant" (presumably "The Covenant" were sent by their masters, an all powerful ancient race known as "The Forerunners"). With her dying breath, A'nk Su'Nam'un told Im'Ho'Tep not to grieve for her and that her soul would be reborn. She told him to wait, look for her among the stars, and if he were a great enough warrior, they would be together again. Even if it took an eternity.

Im'Ho'Tep spent the remainder of his already normally long lifespan conquering enemy after enemy of the Egyption Empire, personally devestating the "Forerunners" and countless other races. Throughout all of his travels across the universe, through battle after battle, he searched the heavens for his beloved A'nk Su'Nam'un. Regardless of how many times it was offered to him, he refused to "ascend" and declare himself a God, claiming that he was born to be a warrior and would become the greatest warrior the universe has ever known so that he could reunite with his lost love. These refusals earned Im'Ho'Tep the scorn of the rest of the Egyptions, who truly saw themselves as "Gods" and felt that he was dampening the glory of their mighty race. While he was not liked by his fellow Egyptions, they respected (and more than likely, feared) his prowess on the battlefield and his keen military intellect.

As Im'Ho'Tep's lifeforce began to wane and he had still not found his beloved A'nk Su'Nam'un, Im'Ho'Tep began to seek out unnatural means to extend his already long life. According to records I have found, he travelled the universe seeking out those that were said to know the secrets of longevity or even immortality. There are accounts here that he tortured over a hundred beings known as the "Sith" (who by these records appear to be some kind of monks that worshipped a kind of "evil lifeforce") and over a score of beings referred to as "Jedi" (these monks appear to be the polar opposites of the "Sith" in that they worshipped a "good lifeforce") the but was only to gain a few extra hundreds of thousands of years existance from what he learned. He tore his way across the universe aquiring life extension knoweledge but his body still continued to grow frail with time. He decided to utilize a combination of all the arcane rituals he had learned as well as an extremely advanced form of robotics to eventually become more machine than man. After over a million years of continuously replacing his failing body parts, Im'Ho'Tep's remaining functional organics were reduced to a nutrient sack filled with half a dozen organs that were nestled in the middle of his mechanical chest, some of the upper part of his spinal column, most of his brain, and part of his face containing his terrible, cruel eyes.

Strangely, the story of Im'Ho'Tep mirrors an Earthly story that came to light in the 1960's. According to the memoirs of the Egyptologist Doctor Evelyn O'Connell, she and her family repeatedly encountered a supernaturally powered "living mummy" named "Im Hotep" that was attempting to aquire objects of supernatural power that would not only enable him to rule the world, but would finally reunite him with his lost love, Anck Su Namun (who had been ressurected twice, and then dispatched twice at the hands of Dr. O'Connell's husband, the famed adventurer Rick O'Connell). Doctor O'Connell claimed that in the mid 1950's her husband forever ended the threat of Im Hotep when he sacrificed himself to bury Im Hotep (and the yet again ressurected Anck Su Namun) beneath an ancient ziggurat in the legendary golden city of Eldorado in South America.

If Dr. O'Connell's memoirs have any kernel of truth to them it raises some serious questions:

Are "Im'Ho'Tep" and "Im Hotep" the same individual? If so, how and when did Im'Ho'Tep come to Earth? Did he somehow find a way to posess a new body like Ra did?

And possibly the most important question of all:

If Rick O'Connell didn't destroy Im Hotep forever, could there actually be a supremely powerful, 2 Million-plus year old, Egyption warrior slumbering somewhere in the Earth, waiting to rise again?...

Audio only excerpt from Melinda Carras' mission log (continued):

"...after Im'Ho'Tep and his droids arrived, the assembled "Gods" left the room, presumably to retire to the throneroom above. The Warrior holding me down roughly hauled me to my feet and led me down a hallway to a lower level than the room we had been in. We were followed by the majority of the female attendants as only one or two from each party followed their masters upstairs...

...the young woman who reached out to me with such kindness was roughly dragged into the room at the hands of one of the Warriors who used her remaining, uninjured arm to carry her...[sounds of sobbing]...she was moaning in pain and barely aware of her surroundings....the Warrior threw her onto one of the posh divans in the center of the room and I heard her scream with new pain...[sounds of sobbing]...a few of the older women came to her side, brandishing strange gauntlets...and I only say "older women" because they were in their late teens or early adulthood...one of the women touched something on the back of the young girl's helm and the most amazing thing happened...the helm began to come apart and fold in on itself until all that remainded was the collar covering her shoulders and the top of her breastbone...revealing a face that would have been astonishingly beautiful had it not been grimacing in pain...[sounds of sobbing]...she opened her eyes to look at me and I saw that her eyes held none of the cruelness that Im'Ho'Tep's held...they were so deep and compassionate that I had to look away or loose myself in them...

...the older woman began to slowly wave her gauntlets above the young woman's shattered shoulder and arm...there was a vibration coming from the gauntlets that I could actually feel in the air...her wounds began to heal right before my eyes...eventually dissappearing completely...she then fell into a deep sleep and I was ushered away by one of the women not involved in the healing...she took me aside and another woman handed me a skirt of the same soft, sheer matierial that they wore...I quickly put it on and tore the decorative sash from around the waist to tie about my chest...I'd love to say that this was an act of defiance to show that I was not the property of the strange "Gods" in the halls above, but I am shamed to admit that it was entirely out of my own modesty...

...After checking on the young girl I left the room and found no one barring my way...it seemed that I was free to roam about the Temple since I was deemed to be of no threat to these mighty beings...I went upstairs in time to see yet more people arriving through the ring portal. There were almost two dozen men coming down the ramp carrying baskets of fruit, large dead quadrapeds on spits, casks of liquids, and other items fit for a feast. These men, like the female slaves, were naked to the waist and adorned with white linen skirts and simple helms. They turned at the bottom of the ramp and headed into the passageway that would lead to the higher levels. After they dissappeared into the hallway, another group of men appeared, this time dressed in soft white jumpsuits with sashed skirts at their waists and very complicated looking slit-eyed helms...

...they began to take up positions at the strange mechanical stations around the room, taking over for the Warriors that were currently vacating those positions with one heading into the hallway leading upstairs...the portal closed again...the Warriors that were manning the stations assembled in front of the ramp and one of them looked up to his left and said something in their hash language...I stepped far enough into the room to be able to look up where the Warrior was looking and saw one of these strange new arrivals was standing behind the mushroom-shaped device above...he responded in their language and began to manipulate something I could not see from my vantage point...then the portal roared to life again! That device was the control for the portal! Four of the Warriors went up the ramp and disappeared into the liquid surface of the portal...then the portal closed down again.

I attempted to test the limits of my freedom by approaching one of the new arrivals, he looked me up and down once and went back to whatever work he was doing as if I was beneath his notice...he was touching items on the stations and looking at others as if to gauge reactions to the other motions..I'm guessing that either they or something in their helms were able to see markings and possibly even holographic readouts that were invisible to my eyes...I then attempted to approach a device that two of the new arrivals were operating and was grabbed from behind and hurled several feet away by one of the remaining Warriors! Apparently, I was free to move about as long as I didn't get too close to anything important...

...I milled about the chamber until the portal opened up again and the four Warriors returned carrying a large copperoid/bronzium container, which they promptly moved off of the ramp and off to one side where they opened it...afraid of further harm at their hands for being too inquisitive, I instead headed up to the second level where I attempted to communicate with the worker manning the portal controls...he just ignored me until I tried to touch the device...then he grabbed my wrist with a grip like durasteel, and pushed my hand away from the device...I decided to take a better look at the statues on this level now that the lighting was better...and do my best to see what the Warriors below were doing...

...they were assembling something...for several minutes I watched them set it up...due to the strange technology and the design aesthetics of their race, I truly had no idea what they were assembling until they were practically done...[sounds of sobbing]...then I realized that it was an enormous weapon..."

Excerpt from the research log of Dr. Daniel Jackson, planet Abydos, Oct. 21, 1996:

"Now here's something interesting...something different than what I experienced when aboard Ra's vessel. Apparently in ancient times all of Ra's subjects and slaves, no mater how low in caste, wore helms of various designs. Designs that showed their status within society. Non-Egyptions, which made up the entirety of the slaves and a good portion of the support staff (such as Jaffa, maintenance techs, cooks, etc.) wore simple helms while Egyptions wore more ornate helms, often in the visage of animals. Helms that they only removed in private.

When in the presence of Ra, only his Jaffa wore helms, and then only when in combat. None of his slaves wore helms. Nor did Ra. His "helm" appeared to be a manifistation of some form of shapeshifting ability (something that he learned to do after his "rebirth"?). What could have ocurred that caused this change in their society? Was it something to do with the event referred to as "The Great Betrayal"? Or was it simply a decree that allowed Ra to further place himself above his subjects?"
