under my basement steps outside view of the steps on the gunsafe side outside view of the steps from the other side

I started out with this problem area. This is the area under my steps going from the first floor of my home to my basement. The problem came in two categories; one, making everything match up with the angle the stairs were running and two, I also had to use this area to store my gun safe. The angle of the steps was difficult in that all of the boards that met that angle would have to be cut at said angle so there would not be gaps you could see through. The gun safe was an issue because of its' obvious size and difficulty in moving in and out of the steps and IT WOULD HAVE TO BE TOTALLY BUILT AROUND. It was also not easy to figure out how the case would meet the top edge along the gun safe. I started out thinking I could use 3/4 inch plywood and have everything support itself. I soon discovered this was not going to be a feasable plan as the range of the area covered made the plywood sag, but I am starting to get ahead of myself.

my little helper Every good project starts with a plan so I enlisted some help and made some tenative measurements of the space I had availabe. I tried to also take into account how big the gun safe was and how much room I would need for at least some clearance behind and to the sides of that safe. Did I mention that the gunsafe is very heavy? Daggone!
