Sounds like a question for the Clonehead. He has done it quite a few times.

Now, I don't want to steal his thunder, but you would need to split that puppy in half and then add in a filler. CH is your best bet to answer this though.

If it is a factory airborne helmet, it is molded pretty thick and a good amount of material can be removed from the inside to help with your fitting. A dremel with a cutting bit, one of the round ones, is the easiest way.
Another way if you don't have a dremel is to use small woodcarvers chisels and a hobby knife. You can find the chisels in a set in the crafting section at Walmart. I think a pack of 6 or more different ones runs $5 or so and there are two or three with rounded blades in the set.

Then you should thicken the inside walls of the helmet if it must fit that head.
White glue is slow drying. Paint will work, or there is always super glue. Thin layers with accelerator to solidify would do the trick.

how much space are we talking about?

I was thinking you could do "helmet padding" on the inside...well; thin it out so that its even bigger; then do super detail of inside to show some details and helmet padding using the furniture dots? round felt pieces with adhesive backing; they come in various sizes, or you can cut your own...

I have glued rubber bands and pieces of fabric inside helmets before. Just figure out where it is loose fitting or it may need to go all the way around. As has been mentioned what method you use depends on how much gap there is and in what area.
