paint/masking question
« on: May 18, 2009, 09:48:57 PM »
Ok, folks.  I have a droid I am painting that has an abundance of molded-on detail.  I need to mask off a recess where masking tape won't go.  Will a blob of Elmer's glue suffice to mask it?  What else works (better) for blocking off tiny crevices so you can hit the nearby area with a good solid run of paint?

I have bought some liquid mask material that might work better than the glue but have never tried it. It came from a hobby heaven, as I recall. I will have to look and see if I can find it.

I'm still gonna pimp silly putty here, but you might need to test it out, works for me, though.

how do you prefer to remove Hasbro's paint?

For those of you who strip the existing detail paint - what products and methods do you use?  I need to pull the brown off four Cmdr Faie figs so I can redetail them.  I've never tried stripping details before, so I'm not sure what works best or worst.

I haven't tried that. I just repaint them white and start from scratch. It may take three coats over the graphic area to hide those brown markings.

all my droids are painted over their existing colour schemes and the detailing is done freehand(for some reason i could never get on with masking)

To strip paint I use a variety of things, remember to test a small area first for compatibility of the plastic, ie under a foot.

Rubbing alchol, paint reducers ( laquer ) paint thinner,   I use a Qtip and just keep at it, it takes a while to soften the paint but it does come off, I removed the red logos on teh 12" clone troopers this way among others.

As for taping,

I have used liquid masking for some items, It is OK but for otehr areas I just use an exacto knife and good quality green automotive painters tape.

Or do what Clint does and paint it all ;)
