spuda's nerf guns (new video!)
« on: December 30, 2010, 10:53:59 AM »
your never too old for nerf guns.  They are awesome.... but like any good customizer I can't leave anything in it's out of the box state!

so....
here's my maverick mod, thought yall'd like it.

modified the revolving section to fully swing out.  Removed each barrel's air restrictors, and completely repainted.

the string at the end is lined with snake vertebrae.

wip shot:

decided to go with an even more rustic almost steampunk look:

what do you think?

I'm also currently working on a longstrike modification too so I'll post that when I get it finished.

Nice work!  I think the Mav is Brendan's favorite weapon as well.  We've repainted it solid black, but alternated ultra-flat and satin finishes.   I got him the new...Stampede, I think? for Christmas (10-shot cylinder, semi-auto).  I like the other new one - 5-shot cylinder with barrel and stock.

What does removing the air restrictor do for you?  More range?

the 5-shot cylindar with the barrel extension and stock.... I looked at that one and bought it but ultimately took it back.  I didn't see any customizing potential there and I didn't much enjoy the flimsy stock and barrel attachments.

removing the air restrictors makes the guns MUCH more powerfull.  Instead of only a small bit of the air being delivered to the dart the full ammount of air from the plunger is applied directly to the full dart during each shot.  this makes the dart fly faster and hit harder....   I wouldn't necessarilly recomend doing this with a very young childs gun (as this would make any shots to sensitive areas that much worse...) but teens and adults who know their way around power tools should definately mod their guns, they are whole lot more fun this way....

I added a barrel extension to my maverick just for SandG's...  it doesn't affect the firing of the gun at all as the dart passes through the barrel without ever touching the barrel's sides.

here is my nerf longstrike I just finished customizing today.  the list of modifications is pretty long, and I know most of you aren't nerf gun customizers so I'll keep the description brief:

mods include:
-removed air restrictor in the bolt
-modified clip assymbly to more easilly remove and replace clip
-modified stock assymbly to allow in-play removal
-removed inner barrel of barrel extension to allow less drag on darts fired through it.
-pipe ring addition to bolt spring to allow full spring compression
-tactical rail 6-dart holder custom built using the flip up sight
-flashlight addition on removable forward barrel
-custom paint

here is what the gun looked like right out of the box (minus the added flip up sights):

here are the internals of the main section of the gun:

and here is the customized gun broken down into it's seperate pieces:

and put together:

with the maverick:

what do you guys think of the paint job?  IDK if I'm totally satisfied with the way it turned out.  I've seen some pretty detailed paint jobs on this and I just got burned out real quick while doing all the masking and spray painting and masking and unmasking and spray painting and etc.... so it didn't get nearly as many layers or colors that I'd planned.

Works for me!  Very Firefly/steampunk look, imo.  My son is considering modding some of his Nerfs, so anything you could pass on would be of interest.  Heck, I may mod my Mav (if I can ever find it again) just to surprise him.  ;)

He put one together the other day from a Longstrike barrel and Longshot body to make a hellacious-looking sniper rifle.  I'm tempted to pick up those guns just to make one for myself!  ;D  Then I'd need a set of Mando armor to match...   8)

my best advice is search youtube for some instructional videos for mods specific to the gun your working on.  for example search "nerf Maverick Mods" for the maverick and "nerf longstrike/longshot mods" for the others.  You should find some decent videos on how to dismantle the guns and remove the air restrictors.  There is a whole internet subculture of nerf customizers out there that honestly rivals the action figure customizing community...

Yeah, I'd looked at some once, but y'know... I don't know those kids on youtube and have no idea which ones are worth listening to.  Guess I'll hit a bunch of them and compare notes between them all.

that's your best bet...  honestly some of those kids know what they are doing pretty well.  And if you can get past the shoddy camera work (which most of them have DEPLORABLE camra skills) you can learn alot...  of course there is no better learning than just doing.  unscrew the guns, open them up, and put them back together again.  If you can do that without ruining it THEN open it back up and start modifying it!

If you didn't tell us that they were Nefr Guns I would have thought that you made them yourself, Fantastic work on the paint apps.
