WIP: Humpback Gunship
« on: April 18, 2017, 02:52:50 PM »
Latest WIP; Humpbacked gunship using sheet styrene and ARC-170 wing/engines....

Started with realizing I've lost, and likely threw away one of the ARC engine cowl covers for the front, then I tried to fit easter egg shells on the front, they're too large for the engines...then I spied my old halloween eyeball ping pong balls... decided to cut them in half...presto they fit nearly perfectly! Had to do some trimming and making slots for the wing tabs but they look hilarious now

First mock up of main structure; well.. only the canopy was not glued to it.
I never planned to have the "cheeks" end so that the nose panel would be rectangular..a happy coincidence!

Rear quarter view of gunship hull the first time around.

view of basic structure.

Decided I didn't like that the poor pilot couldn't see anything below his line of sight....
SO I decided to flip it around, and sliced off a section off the rear sloped panels to make room for the engine/wing box to go on..

Much better..more... battle-ready looking.

Side view of the Humpback gunship

With wing/engine mocked on.

another view of mockup

top view of mockup

glued the two X-wing canopies on, and the first pair of X-wing cannons

Added doors, landing gear, and 2nd pair of X-wing cannons.. hinge arms and landing pads are from the MPC TIE Interceptor kit.

Built the wing/engine joining box; the rubber band and carabiner are for holding the wings as tight to the box until glue dried.

Almost done; the thing looks pretty good as is...but the engine area looks rather...sparse.

Detailing galore! Used parts from my junk model bin... car engine parts, exhaust tubing, SKDFZ 18 pieces, 1/72 scale Jagdpanzer engine deck; Flak-37 pieces, X-wing rear panel, and R2 dome cut from the X-wing kit. All that remains.... super thin sheet plastic for raised panels, and then paint work. Fiancee thinks I should keep the "eyes" on it and add shark mouth somehow just for the effect.... Speaking of eyes... I have not yet seen such an effect done on Y-wing engine pods???? ;)

DERP> I had to edit the OP due to some messup of the IMG tags whoops! Hope you guys enjoy this WIP!! Still not sure if I want to have a shark mouth and eyes on the engine domes or if I should do a more...conventional paint job...

Looks like you got those image tags down. I like this a good bit. I could see that one fly off the screen in our new episode. Off to share.

Roof/front

Rear of hull sides

Bottom, panels are 0.030", due to TIE landing gear thickness

Rear panels; I scribed a line on the rearmost panel

Top view comparison with the X-wings

Showing how huge the ARC wings are compared to the X-wing's set

front view with all 6 cannons on

same front view, but minus the 2 ARC cannons; not sure if I like it with or without the ARC cannons....

Painting progress!

Started with Flat Black overall; lost the eyes lol.

front angled view

bottom view

front view with S-foils closed

Side view with S-foils closed

With S-foils closed, AND ARC-170 guns installed temporarily

Cheek detail shot

Looking downwards to the quarter view

angled sideways view

S-foils open and guns in place

Looking upwards quarter view with S-foils open

Another view

Engine deck view with R2 dome placed. May repaint R2

Used a toothpick and thinned Tamiya Flat Red for the red split circle marking

bottom view with red bands on laser cannons

Side view with painted laser cannons

The whole thing just looks...sinister! Looks like something used by covert/clandestine strike teams, or by Deathtroopers

Humpback Gunship complete!!!
« Reply #11 on: April 23, 2017, 10:46:48 AM »
Everyone; Thanks!!! :D
Weathering progression;

First round of weathering; I utilized acrylic paints, using matte black and various tinting shades of green, red, gray-blue, and purple; as well as thinned semigloss black. ALso drybrushed with a mixture of Prismacolor's metallic silver and Testor's flat black on the engine deck, after using a slight "rust" wash made with burnt umber and yellow, thinned out.

Added paint "chips" using the Prismacolor metallic silver pen

Repainted some of the panels that I was not satisfied with, and added a little bit more weathering to the hull panel edges

Added some more paint chipping to the wings, and some more weathering to the wings' edges, and added a thin red band on the canopy frame. Last pic in the above set is of a panel that could hide a pop-out swiveling blaster like the unit used on Millennium Falcon in ESB.

Finished ship (minus the R2) in front of the X-wing and ARC-X display; with ARC cannons removed.

R2 dome repainted; Tamiya Flat red with Testors Model Master flat black, and Prismacolor silver pen, I don't remember if there is such an R2 in canon yet, although I know of a red dome one with white/silver panels.

Finished, still minus the ARC wing guns.

All complete with wing cannons installed, and with both S-foils closed and open, as well as in flight mode.
The R2 unit enters the craft from the bottom from one of the large panel openings in front of the rear landing gear.
EDIT: Last picture in this series shows just how large the ARC wings are compared to the X-wing sets even on the ARC-X hull.

That's a very attractive design with a great profile.  Nice work on the finishes and the weathered paint job.
