Title: 2014 Birthday Challenge Final Entries
Post by: HALCION on November 09, 2014, 09:06:51 AM
Hello, as I have been disqualified from the contest due to the wrong entry scale, I would like to re-enter w my 3" GREVIOUS x3 forms pack!
These are completely re jointed far beyond the average 3" figure.the cloak is hand made and has a painted emblem on the back , all were given paint and wash apps, but the real smiles come from the newly added joints to give these figures unlimited POA !

Here's my final entry for the birthday challenge: Return of Ahsoka Tano, Star Wars Rebels......I dumped the stock speeder for a sidekick to meet the challenge criteria. "Umm yes Ahsoka, there was no surgery, I never met you" ......ahahahaha based on all the comments I've received.

Sweet! She is all grown up! Very nice work on the figure. Since you submitted your pics here are you calling the stock swoop bike your custom vehicle or small diorama?
Title: Re: 2014 Birthday Challenge Final Entries
Post by: dobiwan on November 18, 2014, 04:46:04 PM
Yes, the swoop bike is the dio part of the challenge, I know it's not spectacular but I'm not real good at the diorama portion of custom figures. But I wanted to enter the challenge.

Very cool custom! I love your idea and I believe Mace is alive. Have you ever tried sealing your figure with Dull Cote? I will get rid of the glossy look and make the figure easier to photograph. Are you not making a mini diorama or deluxe accessory?

Thanks for the kind words on my entry guys! I know he is loaded to the eyelids but this is the "Ultimate Action Figure Contest" right? lol

Yes, just have a look at the rules on page 1, the opener for this tread and event. It can be very simple but you do have to try something and photograph it with your figure for an official entry.

Luke, I saw the rules page 1 but I did not understand the translation rules and do my English is not good enough so I can do without google translation .... Given the short time I probably still do not have time. it does not matter, again. Good luck to all

Finally my Massassi is done! I've only put like 80 hours into all the sculpting, painting, making the weapons, and diorama. It's the first time I've made a diorama, or spray-painted anything, just glad I figured a nice way to do it. I put a clay spread down and cut the tiling in, and used the same clay to cover some cheep figures to make the statues. The Massassi was once a frost giant, liked the base for it's gold bands that flawlessly worked into the Massassi style armor. Even though the figure was bigger to begin with, most of it still wasn't big enough so I resculpted the entire back, also because it needed to be a bit hunched to really give it a Massassi feel. The headsculpt is completely my own, and my first facesculpt, but I think it turned out well. His headtails closest to his body are rubber, thanks to a generous donation from Fit Fisto, the rest of them I made. All the coverings on his abdomen are sculpted or made by me, along with the feet, thigh armor, and shoulder armor.

I'm coming in just under the wire with this one.  I really didn't think I was going to finish her in time - ben working on her when I could all month long. (There are still some rough bits, I know...  Really still learning how to sculpt with green stuff, so I will likely go back and fix some spots once I'm better with it.)  I present my SA 3.75" Hera from Rebels.
I was personally disappointed when Hasbro decided to go 5 poa with Rebels and since she's my favorite character on the show, she's the first I decided to try my hand at.  She retains all typical articulation for Black Series level figures, which I've tried to show in the photos. (ball neck, ball shoulder, ball elbow, swivel wrist, ball torso - which was a pain to get a mara jade upper torso to work with an x-wing pilot lower body..., swivel hips, ball knees, ball ankles.)  She uses parts from 6 different figures (plus green stuff and paint) altogether.  Her dio accessory is a small refueling station.  I figured as Rebels on the run, they could leave these small fuel pods at various locations to help them out in a jam.  (The dio piece is made out of Kinder eggs containers, Lego pieces and one piece from a model kit.)  The weathered Phantom shuttle doesn't count for the contest, I realize, but I thought the refueling station would look silly with nothing to refuel.  I hope you enjoy her!

Here is my entry. This is a custom VERGERE figure with a section of the sentient planet Zonama Sekot diorama made with real plant life. Vergere's head is a resin cast that is a cast copy of the original headsculpt that I did. Her lightsaber has a metal hilt and it magnetizes to the side of the pouch on her left side. Vergere is fully poseable too. This is my final entry. Good luck to everyone! This thread is full of incredible work!

In thinking about the word 'ultimate' and creating an ultimate version of an already iconic character, I began to wonder what George Lucas' ultimate influence was when he was writing Star Wars. I knew that Lucas was a big fan of Akira Kurosawa's work in film and that his inspiration for the costumes, aesthetics, and philosophies for the Jedi and Sith characters were greatly influenced by Eastern cultures, especially Samurai. Chief among the references used by Ralph Mcquarrie in designing Darth Vader's look and costume were the concepts of the 'dark knight' trope from western medieval culture and of course samurai.

This made me ask the question, "What if Akira Kurosawa had directed a science fiction film--and what if Star Wars was a collaboration between Kurosawa and George Lucas?"

This figure is entitled "The Ultimate Influence" and combines the Darth Vader we know today merged a classic 16th century Samurai warrior in full battle armor. This is the ultimate version of the "Dark Father" Samurai character. He comes with 2 different styles of helmet, 3 different reinterpretations of the classic lightsaber/katana, and an unmasked evil Anakin Skywalker head.

 Better late than never.

My entry is a Clone trooper deserter. Tired of the war, he abandons his armor and walks off the battlefield to find a life outside of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Everyone's entries look great. Good work, and good luck!

Okay got it posted!

Sorry I was almost late with this it's been a rough couple of weeks and a really crappy Thanksgiving. The entire family came down with a stomach flu, and it was a bad one. I almost skated out of it but on Thursday evening it came down on me like a box of hammers.

Anywho, I got the Ultimate ESB Han Solo:

Lighted Mini Stand (Home Depot drain, amber resin, and puck light)
VC Bespin Han Legs (with LC Cloud City Guard lower legs because I hate his skinny ones)
Hoth Legs Are GI Joe FireFly Uppers and Hoth Han Lowers (Qinlan soft goods skirt painted blue)
Shirt Torso is POTJ Bespin Han (modified with a neck peg and arm and waist receivers)
Bespin Jacket is POTJ Bespin Han
Hoth Torso is Saga Legends Hoth Han (modified with a neck peg)
VC Bespin Han Head
SL Hoth Han Head (modified neck hole)
Hoth Open Jacket is VC Echo Base Han
VC Bespin Han Arms
VC Echo Base Han Arms (modified shoulder peg)
VC ANH Han arms
SL Hoth Han Arms
POTF Han in Carbonite (with re-sculpted face and closed back)
Accessories:
Folded Down Hood
Snow Goggles
Neckerchief
Hoth Binoculars
Hoth Scanner
Welding Mask
Welding Goggles
Welding Torch
Breather Mask
Two Mynock
Gun Belt
Filler Belt
Blaster
Hand Cuffs
Arm Shackles

This guys got a lot more combinations by using different legs and torsos, jackets and gear! This is what I'd like to see Hasbro put out as a standard.

Unfortunately I didn't get to finish his Hoth hat and hood that were going to be two separate removable pieces. Also the Han in Carbonite was going to get lights as well but I just didn't have time. This is my final entry. I hope you all like him!

Ok folks, I am locking this down as the entry phase is now over. Looking forward to getting all these organized and it will soon be time to get to the prizes! Thanks for all who entered. I know this one was a little more involved which was why we went with the two month time frame.
Title: Re: 2014 Birthday Challenge Final Entries

Folks, I am getting this sorted. I think it will work out so everyone who entered will get at the very minimum a random prize. I am gonna feature each customizer's project as I draw their random prize. I am gonna get all the names in my TESB Cup and hopefully get started with this this weekend. Man there are some nice entries here. Thanks so much for entering!

I have unlocked the topic so folks can now write more comments, but remember if folks try to post new entries they will be removed.

Prizes sorted. Everyone who entered will win something!
I went through my list and checked it twice and tried to be as fair with the prize parceling as I could. Look for the random drawings to begin soon. I am gonna do one a day and highlight that person's custom on the front page (bet some of you were wondering when I was gonna get to that!). Thanks for your patience. I got my whole family involved in the sorting. It was like Santa's workshop.

After the random prizes get doled out we will have our grand prize announcements.

Here is my entry! It's Farmboy Luke Skywalker with custom painted Speeder.

Nice weathering on the speeder.   I'm keeping your image as a reference, in case I ever get around to digging mine out.  How many different Luke figures did you collect those accessories from?
We'll be lucky to get a lightsaber (sans hilt) from Hasbro if they ever release a definitive farm boy Luke.

Hello, as I have been disqualified from the contest due to the wrong entry scale, I would like to re-enter w my 3" GREVIOUS x3 forms pack!
These are completely re jointed far beyond the average 4" figure.  The cloak is hand made and has a painted emblem on the back.  All were given paint and wash apps, but the real smiles come from the newly added joints to give these figures unlimited POA !

If it was up to me, I would have liked to see that 6" Probe Droid entered, but then no one would know how great you were at 3.75 scale too.  What an excellent idea to kit bash the best parts of several Grievous figures.  I see double ball hinged knees from the last TCW Grievous and two separate shoulder ball joints in the center figure too.  You need to itemize exactly would you did here.

We continue our prized today with StarFall and his great Samurai Vader...

Really enjoyed this take on a classic character.

Same here.

It is just fantastic. I can't imagine the glee I would feel if Hasbro would ever give us something half this cool. Spry no need to send me your address and your prize will be on its way.

The wait is finally over its time to announce the Grand Prize Winners. My celebrity judges poured over these entries and it was not an easy decision. We all agree that everyone did a bang up job. That being said, here is what we came up with:

Grand Prize 1 - Luke Sprywalker with his Ultimate Kamakura

Grand Prize 2 - Ron Hembling with his Turok Dinosaur Hunter

Luke you will come away with the Sideshow Collectibles 12" Darth Malgus.

Ron you will come away with the SDCC Exclusive Jabba the Hutt.

Thanks again to all the entrants and get ready for us to announce the poll to vote on our next challenge!

Ron and Luke Sprywalker
Congratulations.
Those are some masterful creations.
Ron, your dino hunter is beautiful.  Everything is done with such subtlety, yet emote so well.
LS, your dojo and figure were mind-blowing.  They detail on each is stunning and I couldn't tell you which one I liked better.  Bravo.
