Looks great is there an interior or just an empty box?
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on October 05, 2014, 12:14:08 AM
No interior , due to the need for a complete support system from head to rear of body , this will be extremely heavy !

Wow nice! The details are coming along...

Question what materials are you using? Is it polystyrene sheets or something else?

I've been following this work on FB and I am very impressed.  Did you use a heat gun or something to warm the styrene to get those nice bends?

I am disappointed to see that there will be no interior.  I also feel like it might be a tad bit undersized, as the cockpit should be able to hold at least 4 drivers and the neck section is supposed to be tall enough for a person to walk through...  That being said, we are all so used to seeing underscaled version of the at-at that it's completely ok!  To undertake such a huge build you'd almost have to make it smaller than it should be just to manage it!

The work you've done so far is impressive.  I also enjoyed seeing pics of your at-st.  I'd like to see more detailed pictures of it if you have them.  Especially of the legs.

Are you making either of those articulated? Or are they static pieces?

This is exciting.  You have obviously made other miniatures before.

How tall will it be, when it's completed.

This same customizer also made an awesome AT-ST in the same scale that was off the charts awesome and very accurate.

Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :

No heat gun used , no dremel used, mainly xacto blade and super glue, height will be around 5 1/2 ft,no articulation as this will weigh a lot !
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on October 05, 2014, 07:30:16 PM
Scale is accurate , plenty of room for 4+ in cockpit if I were to have done the interior .

Could you talk more about your process? Are you building from a template or are you doing it by eye? The scale is awesome, it will be one HUGE piece of work when complete..

Would you share your process? So that others could duplicate? (or try at least?) I never liked reinventing the wheel :P
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on October 05, 2014, 09:01:17 PM
Doing everything by eye and by hand , I've saved a handful of images from image searches and added my own design elements into it without deviating too far from the original VER:

Scale is accurate , plenty of room for 4+ in cockpit if I were to have done the interior .

I stand corrected! (and I'm happy about that).  For whatever reason, it might be the angle, it looked smaller to me in those first few photos.  Your recent set definitely set the scale better for it.

I love the neck adition!  I hope that you at least build in a compartment into the body which can be opened and a few figures placed inside.   It's a real shame not to have some playability with the inside of this monster!

I would also customize a couple tie pilots into drivers if I were you!

If you didn't use any kind of heat gun to bend the plastic then I am uber impressed with the bends you've achieved.  I can't wait to see more of this monstrosity!
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on October 07, 2014, 08:35:47 AM
The inside will require a serious support system due to the xtreme weight , however there will be a Hoth Luke tossing an explosive in his belly:)

Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: spudafett on October 10, 2014, 12:39:32 PM
Amazing.  I still think that if you engineer it just right you might be able to get some play-room out of that middle section.

I'm thinking you should use some lightweight metal rods for support in the frame.  You can get all-thread at any hardware store that you can the use with a series of nuts to hold things together with...   Just throwing out some ideas.

I can't wait to see how you attach the legs.  That will intrigue me most about this entire build.

By the way, I really appreciate you taking the time to take WIP shots of this build.  It makes it so much better.  I love being able to see a project come together and so many people only post finished product photos online with no WIP shots.  WIP pics makes the entire thing seem even more impressive!

Post by: HALCION on October 10, 2014, 02:03:04 PM
Thanks guys, yes I'll be doing way more inner support beams, as far as play value, it is more of a prop replica showpiece as I'm still trying to make it flow w the 6" toy series, once you do too much detail and weathering it make the figures and surrounding props look unbalanced.this will be so heavy I won't be doing any playing w it, aside from the final diorama, wich will have a Snowspeeder and Luke tossing a bomb in its belly :)

Post by: DarthSinister on October 10, 2014, 07:59:16 PM
Wow! Unbelievable build, and so fast! Just incredible! I know you're doing this at 6" scale but it would be perfect for 3-3/4"!!!

Welcome to the Yards.
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on October 10, 2014, 08:50:08 PM
It's actually in perfect scale w the 6" line,I've gone over so much material of the walker that it's only off by a very unnoticeable percent !

So are you going to be making a 6" scale snowspeeder from scratch as well?  Awesome.

Brandon, I think you ought to run for president. Wow, this is great. What a neat way to use PVC to give this the support for both the body and legs. Having worked with that size PVC in my own house (think two inch is what I see) this really ought to support the weight.

What can I say, its time to share again!

Yes I am a man of few words, it's mainly due to the fact that when I'm taking a 5 min smoking break or running around trying to keep up w my boys is the time when I post pics.So please understand I'm not trying to be nondescript about this build, it's just that I'm already on Fast forward and I think the pics give enough info for the viewers to see how I've been creating this, thank you all for the kind words and patience:)

The AT-AT is coming together so nicely.  I love watching this build.
Is the AT-AT driver finished too?  He looks great!
Any plans on making 6" General Veers?  I've noticed there are plenty of Dagobah Lukes on the pegs.

Thanks TAMER! This build will be on pause until I get the molding and casting supplies obtained, as they are pretty pricey and I have four solid resin legs and feet to make it will be the longest wait , if I do any other work before casting I will most definetly update and share, thanks for your support and belief in the HALCION HOTH SQUAD:)

Truly awesome work on display here! Just caught up with all the action on your AT-AT ! Most impressive! One thought, when you cast the legs you can add a thin layer of styrofoam in the center to save on resin. I have done it in a few large pieces. Also love the 6 inch speeder you designed! Love that you based it on the nose design of the scout trooper helmet! It shows and works at the same time. Great use of parts cobbled together for a cohesive design. Also liking the weathering but would love to see the engines and other bits dirtied up a bit like the outer skin is. Can't wait to see your next update!

Wow, you said it was gonna be heavy. I know you are thinking about all angles when it comes to the legs, but I wonder if some rebar might be the ticket for support when you pour the resin. I cannot wait to see another image update here.

I was thinking the same thing.   (http://www.cosgan.de/images/midi/konfus/g040.gif) (http://www.cosgan.de/smilie.php)

I would love to watch you applying the paint detailing to your vehicles.  Do you use an airbrush or free hand?  Also, are you painting them during the assembly process?

I'm not sure if you've stated it and I missed it, but what material do you use to make stuff like the imperial walker and the speeders?
Is that like styrene sheets, or some other material?

I've been wanting to build something, but the material isn't cheap.  I've resorted to buying some "for sale" signs from walmart...but even that wasn't cheap at over 2 bucks per sheet.
Title: Re: 6"black series AT-AT WIP :
Post by: HALCION on December 01, 2014, 08:01:36 AM
Thanks, and as far as matierials the for sale PVC signs are the best bet, don't get cheap on your own art, and $2 is not expensive, the PVC for sale signs come in different thickness and are way cheaper than official plastistruct sheets,I also do an inner frame made from balsa wood or a really hard cardboard, unless you have all the needed supplies laying around you will need to spend some cash on supplies, but it's all so worth it:)

Your work on Kira, her droid & speeder are jaw-dropping!  I've kept coming back just to admire what an awesome job you've done on her.

I'm curious: what material did you use to craft her hood/shawl/cape?  Looks like some of the material is pliable, but the folds make me think that you also (possibly) used some part of a pre-existing Marvel cape, etc. (like the Hope Summers one)...

Outstanding stuff; can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve!

Not that I wouldn't vote you in tpp, but you startes that honkin massive speeder before the trailer premiered.  Plus you got a lot of impressive  sculpting done in just a few days.   I'm still awe struck, but you've got to to either an extremely gifted professional or you had reference images way before the general public did.
Again.
I am still awestruck.
Keep it coming, please.
