Title: spuda's 1/12 (6") vehicles (ATRT)
Post by: spudafett on August 10, 2014, 08:03:51 PM
I decided that with the new speeder bike and scout trooper coming out for the 6inch black series line (which I've yet to get, but will be) there needed to be some other vehicles.

Inspired by the massive 6 inch scale at-st that another forum member built out of cardboard I started my own cardboard project today.

Here's what I've gotten so far:

more pics on my facebook page as the work progresses... and I'll post the final pictures here whenever I get this finished.

any ideas for another vehicle project anyone?  I was already thinking about a landspeeder of somekind maybe...

Wow, now this is such a great idea! I have really thought about running a small six inch vehicle custom contest and maybe I can add that idea to the next poll.

Off to share. I can't wait to see what this turns into.

Are you keeping it clonewars style or making it more realistic?

I moved the pedals to the backwards position instead of out front, I feel like this is a more comfortable looking positioning...

How do you mean "realistic" vs "clone wars"?

I was going to incorporate some various elements into this that the CW version didn't have.  Including articulated maneuvering vanes, air brakes, a storage compartment, a holster, and a custom slave 1 inspired paint job...

progress....  I decided to keep things as simple as possible.  I had enough trouble as it was with trying to get the frame built correctly and the foot pedals and handle bars to work right.   I didn't try and make the stabilizing vanes maneuverable.

I did however get a compartment built into the back of it... more pics of that when it's done...

here's pre-paint:

Looking good Devin. I've been thinking of converting my Halo jeep into a speeder. It has an open cockpit and a cool looking body. With the gun in the back it could be a Mando ride.

I mean is it in the cartoony simplistic style of the clonewars or realistic like belonging to the movies with more details

I decided that since I have my pre-vizla 6inch custom that going with the clone wars color scheme and style only made sense for this project.  Eventually I'll make boba his own custom speeder as well....

I should have used a paint pen or a sharpie to do the detail lines... but I couldn't help but challenge myself to freehand everything.  I spray painted the grey basecoat, but the blue and black is all brushed on by hand...  you can tell in the closeups, but I think it turned out ok.  I can always re-paint it later!

Is it hard going from action figures to vehicle buidls?

It is definitely different.  That's a hard question though... since I feel like my first customs were vehicle model kits building the vehicles is almost easier in my mind.   That being said, I feel that way on builds like this where there aren't any or very few moving parts.  The last vehicle I attempted from scratch was a walker, and when I got to the legs I quit because I couldn't solve the articulation issues.

Figures offer a whole different set of challenges than a vehicle build.  But, what I like most about a build like this is that it is 100% from scratch.  I didn't need to buy anything for it.  I didn't need to sacrifice something else for it.  I used cardboard, wire, a few plastic pieces of model kit sprues, styrene and a plastic for sale sign.

Sometimes I have an idea and I sit on it for literally YEARS before actually executing it in a way that is satisfying.  A long time ago I attempted to scratch build an AT-PT in 1:18th scale using lego parts and styrene.  The thing came out as to be expected, after all it was only my 2nd scratch built vehicle.

The idea I've been sitting on for years however is the way I constructed the legs.  Using lego technic ball joints for the articulation.  It worked extremely well....   having this idea in the back of my head I bought a "hero factory" dragon that was clearanced at wal-mart almost 6 months ago now.  it's been sitting in my fodder box for months waiting for me to use the parts to finish work on the scratch built walker I was working on from the new rebels cartoon...   with that vehicle getting an official release I quit working on the project and the parts have sat unused...

Unitl now.  Using the ball joints (cut up and re-worked) from the hero factory dragon I've started building a 6" scale At-Rt...   here's what I've got so far:

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10603195_743441319028213_6913216319824642635_n.jpg?oh=b53b036a3ed22e28aad66f1e92ba117e&oe=547CD56E&__gda__=1416615911_11e87f379cdd20a9e9973328b1706c0c)

It's taken me almost 5 hours just to get to this point... it's been a lot of trial and error and gluing/regluing to get everything to work the way I wanted it to.  But the hardest part is done, building the framing for the legs.  Now I just need to flesh them out with some details and build the main body of the walker.  The trick will be to keep the body light enough that the legs can support it...

I can't wait to get this one finished.   I feel like I've finally found the perfect way to showcase the idea of using those lego ball joints in a walker build!

I'm very pleased with how the body came out.... but after working with it I realized that I need to beef up the legs some.  They are WAY too scrawny and just don't look right.  I'll work on finishing out the fine details of the legs, controls, and footpedals the next few nights.  Then hopefully this weekend get some time to paint it.

I'm also going to try something new for this project.  I have printable water slide decals that I want to try and use to get the finishing touches done on this project.  Hopefully that will add some professionalism to the final piece.

I agree, this really is turning into something extraordinary. I love seeing how quickly customizers jump on creating 6 inch scale functional vehicles. There's this guy at a SWBS6 Facebook group who is actually well on his way with building a 6 inch scale AT-ST  :o

With an AT-RT, an AT-ST in the works, there's bound to be a 6 inch scale AT-AT on the horizon? The Tamer-sign is lit  [at1]

I had that thought actually last night.  With the new figures coming down the line including the tie pilot it wouldn't be too hard to convert him into an at-at driver...  I was considering at the very least constructing a 6" scale at-at head/cockpit.

Thanks for the tip Krztfr.  I'll keep that in mind.  Right now these are holding up ok in most positions...  with the figure on there they are having a little trouble holding the weight in some of the poses.

Here's what I've done today to widen and detail the legs,  what do you guys think?

it's hard to see the details with the white and black parts...  especially with the flash on (sorry about that).   With the weekend on its way I'll have more time to devote to finishing these details.

That's pretty awesome SF. Sorry if I missed it but how is the leg articulation?

the leg articulation works well enough.  it's hard to get it to stay solid in every pose, but most hold up ok.  I'm thinking that when I spray paint this it will add some strength to the joints as well.

I will take a video of the final piece to showcase exactly how it all works.

Daggone, but this looks good on our front page. Devin, you really ought to design program this and get this to a 3D Printer. You could sell thousands of these. With your scratch building skills I could easily see you buying a 3D Printer and making a few of these. How many parts would you say you have created for this? I guess I could see that number being high. Still, it would be cool to see a ton more of these in all the great paint markings we saw in TCW. Definitely one of your best scratch building efforts since I have known you!

thanks tamer.   I would agree with you that this is probably the best, and most extensive scratch build I've ever done.  Usually I tend to rush these kinds of projects, and this one has been a slower more patient endeavor.  and I think that shows.  It also helps to have a physical reference to work from.  I'm using the revel 1:18th scale model kit as a reference (I'm sure you've noticed it in the photos) instead of just photos.  Having a 3d model to rotate, move and take measurements from helps me visualize what I need to build.

I haven't yet decided on a color scheme for the final product yet... but I think I'm going to go with the kashyyyk color scheme as seen in the movies, grey and green.

As for the individual parts,  the individual pieces are the feet, 3 leg sections, the hip joint, and then the largest piece is the body.  There's also the gun.   The body could be constructed into separate pieces, the main body and then the two armor shields on both sides, and then the foot pedals.

I will try and record a short video showcasing all the small details when I get it finished.

I would love to see you hook up with someone like Jrny Fan and get this mapped out. I wonder if there is any way to 3D Scan this? Just an awesome creation. I too would go with the movie color scheme.

Idk, but if you are going to go to the trouble of 3d scanning something I'd scan the revel kit and just upscale it to the right size digitally. then you'd get a more accurate piece.  YOu could also scan each piece before it was assembled so you could 3d print the entire model kit joints and all...

so paint...   I've got a base of grey down, now to detail it.  I was going to go with a movie version like this one:

But I found this great custom version of the model kit that I liked:

and then there is the first at-rt toy's sceme which is a little crazy if you ask me:

and even still are the TCW versions of the toy...  (no links sorry) but I definitely don't want to do the desert deco version or the 501st version.

I've about decided on the first reference image, closer to the revel model kit's paint scheme with heavy weathering added.   But I do like the idea of adding more camo to it....

finished!   With the added layers of spray paint in the joints I am able to get a much sturdier range of poses out of the figure.  With a total of 9 points of articulation in the legs, and an additional 2 points in the chin gun, this is a nicely articulated final piece.

I also took an extra step to add an LED light to the chin gun, the batteries for which are hidden behind one of the armor siding pieces.

Check it out for yourself:

well, what do you guys think?  I still haven't printed off any decals for it yet.  I plan on doing at least a couple control panel decals and at least a few "not a step" and "danger" decals in arubesh (star wars) font!
