Title: Bronxstalker's customs (Pg 37:6" Ven Zallow)
Post by: Bronxstalker on July 21, 2014, 05:52:38 PM
Hi all,

I've been a long time lurker and have decided to bite the bullet and join and start posting.  I only have about a year under my belt customizing, and my earlier stuff isn't even worth showing.
Now, I have  a couple that might be of interest to show.  I still don't have a lot to post at the moment, and I'm hesitant to post them, but what the heck, might as well.
Like I said, not many for now, but hopefully I'll add more (or at the very least, my works in progress).

Here's my attempt at a Sith lord that is purely influenced by Sithfire30.  He really is a mixture of different characters, so he doesn't have a name.

Here's a mandalorian I put together from a snake eyes figure using a boba fett head.  Some sculpt and total repaint.  Just like the first custom, he has no name.  I really suck at coming up with cool names.

And, here goes my custom take on Snake Eyes.  This one is a 6" figure using Drax as the base figure.  The helmet is totally scuplted, and there's some minor sculpt on the rest of the body.  The sword is custom made out of styrene sheet and the scabbard is made from a pen's casing.

Hope you enjoy.

Those are some cool customs, and hey don't be shy about showing earlier (failed) attempts, we've all been there. I have some early failed attempts I'm still hoping to one day remedy.

Ok.  Here goes my very first custom.  Bear in mind, that back when I did this, I had no idea about the various customizing tricks.  I didn't know about sculpting, which paints to use, etc.
Being the first without knowing the customizing world that I would delve into, this one is simply a straight repaint and nothing else, over an old Firefly figure.  You can tell that I didn't even sand down Firefly's mask. At the time, I literally only bought red and black paint from Michael's.

Here goes my second customization ever.  I still knew little about the tricks of the trade, and I wish I knew more back then, because otherwise, I thought he came out pretty good all things considering.  However, since I did not know the tricks of the trade, I ended up using sculpty instead of Aves apoxie (which is what I now use).  The sculpty was a pain to use, I had to keep baking him which left the figure "loose".  As a newbie, I still had trouble with the painting, and while you have to really look close in the image to see it, in person, it's easy to see the imperfections in the paint job.

Here's my attempt at Taskmaster.  This one I think didn't come out too bad, but it could have been better.  I messed up because I started with sculpty, and then found out about Aves, and finished him using Aves.  However, I was still learning, and didn't wait at least 30-60 minutes to let the apoxie to hardened a bit before using it.
I was also still not comfortable sculpting, so things like his arm bands, leg armor, etc....came out nothing like what's on Taskmaster.
I was also really horrible at painting, and had trouble using white paint and straight black lines.  Honestly, even today, I have trouble with light colors and straight lines.

I could have sworn I posted this, but I probably didn't fully click on the post button.

Anyway, I'll post again.  This one is of Snake Eye, but it's a very very simply custom, nothing complex.  All I did was use snake eyes head, Stalker body and Zartan shins/feet.  The chest armor piece is from a flint or duke, I can't remember which.  And I don't recall where I got the backpack from, but I sculpted that piece in the back to hold his sword.

grrrrrr, I have to redo the face on that WiP mando.  I went to sand down the mask piece, only to find the apoxie still soft.  I must have not properly mixed equal parts.

For someone just starting out, that is some unbelievable work.  Wow.  Wish I had your sculpting skills!

I do a lot of looking at other people's work.  So, my creativity doesn't go any farther than someone else's work, as most of the time, I'm just trying to replicate what I see from others.

Here goes my "extremely simple" custom of my "re-imagined Storm Shadow.  Just a simple head swap and repaint.  I really wanted to do a re-imagining of Storm Shadow, simply because, his name Storm Shadow really doesn't strike me as being "white".  Both the words storm and shadow screams either black, grey, dreary, etc, so I made him just that.  However, since the real Storm Shadow is indeed white, I dry brushed him with some lighter shades.

Enjoy.

Another question, not sure if this is the right forum or if I should pose this question in another section.

I'm trying to create my version of a storm trooper, and wow....painting whites suck.  Heck, my white doesn't even match my storm trooper's white helmet.  My white is crazy white, and the helmet next to it makes the white look so bright, with the helmet not as white.
Is there a particular white that's best to use to try and match that kind of trooper white?  What's the best method to paint whites?  Should I spray paint that sucker and then go in and just hand paint all the non-whites?
Title: Re: Bronxstalker's customs
Post by: Mando Assasin on July 31, 2014, 11:56:47 AM
i still have trouble with white. i think the spray painting sounds good. i try to use testers acrylic paint and the white turned out ok for me.

Until I find a good white paint...I might switch it up and go grey and black for my trooper, instead of white and black.

Ok, so this one was originally supposed to be a mandalorian, inspired by a madalorian I saw that Stonox had.  As I was making him, I decided to switch gears because I also had in the back of my mind to work on a trio of troopers that used to be storm troopers, but were on the run (think the A-Team), so they use whatever gear they could salvage.

I don't have a name for him yet, but I plan on there being 3 of them, along with a mule droid that follows them and carries their gear.

Base body GI joe figure, helmet from old storm trooper figure (using magnet for full range of motion on head), belt is made from styrene and fodder, and last but not least, helmet that's fitted on the storm trooper helmet is from another gi joe figure.  Primed and fully painted, influenced by Stronox.

I loved the A Team. I think it is a great idea for the Storm Trooper story line too. Wouldn't that make a great EU Novel, a team like that trying to break away from the Evil Empire, not being trusted by the Rebellion either, just trying to survive in the universe, but constantly getting into new trouble. I would buy it.

On the front pages.

You could even do some SW Uglies for this squad. I could see them scavenging parts of Imperial and Rebel vehicles to keep one step ahead of the empire and other agencies out to bring them to justice while they do their good deeds.l

Ok, I promise you guys that I'll get the 3rd trooper in this week.  I've started work on him, but wanted to get the below finished so that I could put him up on ebay.  I don't have a ton of figures laying around to customize and need to sell some stuff to get more base figures to customize some more.

This is a custom of a 6" Daredevil that I was working on.  He's made from a Captain America base figure, primed, painted black base, dry painted, washes, some sculpt, etc.
Hope you enjoy viewing.

Here goes VERY rough WiP on my 3rd trooper to complete the trio.
Again, very rough right now.  He hasn't gone through my typical paint job, the back skirt will be of a different material (just need to cut it), etc.
He of course will have the full gi joe articulation.  The helmet is obviously storm trooper, the shoulder pads, arm bands, and bottom legs/feet are also from a storm trooper figure.

Thanks for the kind words Tamer.

Here goes the mule droid that accompanies the Galactic Marauders.  As the "confiscate" gear/loot, they rely on the mule droid to lug around what they collect.  (pics are bad quality due to phone camera, main camera needs new batteries).  And yes, he does open and hold stuff.  He's made from some mint candy tin box and some other stuff.

The following are not figures nor fit into any lore, but I came across some guy that makes these and calls them Valero-bots.  My daughter loves them, so I decided to start making them....but I'll call mine....Stalker-bots, lol.  They're pretty much made from random odd stuff found around the house.  For example, the one on the left is made from a cake frosting jar, bottle caps, etc.  The second one is made....from a deodorant container. I'm going to making more of these....I told my wife not to throw anything away without me looking at it first, lol.

Hey man, great work on those Galactic Marauders. Looking sharp, as do Daredevil and Storm Shadow. Keep working with that sculpting compound. You're off to a better start than me way back and practice makes perfect.

Did you receive the parts yet? I've sent out quite a few parcels and can't really remember who received theirs yet ;)

White's a tough colour to paint. My method: apply a thorough coat of white primer. I prefer to use the airbrush for that, since I can get multiple really thin coats until the colour is almost entirely white. After that, it's a matter of applying thin coats of the finishing colour with the airbrush. Of course, spray paint works too, as long as you make sure you apply thin coats. You really just use short blasts of spray paint, then.

Yellow and red are the other two dreaded colours. Yellow also needs a white surface to make it really pop. Red on the other hand needs a grey surface coat. Otherwise, your red will turn out pinkish.

Again, above mentioned methods are what works for me. I'm sure there are other ways to go about it :)

Does anyone here have any experience working with the Blanx Alpha figures?
After seeing what Sithfire30 does with dremeled down bodies, I decided to try looking up to see if anything barebones was sold like that, and I stumbled upon these blanx alpha figures.
Without doing much research, I ordered 5 of them.....only to find out, that they are very, very....VERY small and thin compared to standard Joe figures.
With that said, I absolutely love the articulation and how well they pose (although I wouldn't mind if they have had articulation right below the chest like standard Joe figures).  These tiny dudes have some of the best articulation that I've seen in any Joe or SW figure...but of course, the downside is their size....oh, and they are very bare bones, so you really need to add sculpt, or a ton of fodder to them, not really good for kitbashing.

I really wanted to try and make something like what Stitchfett does, but simply don't have the cash to drop on micromen figures...I also don't have any clones to hollow out....so I'm going to try using these little dudes and add the armor by straight up sculpting, and hope to get the affect of Stitchfett's awesome figures (seeing as these alphas seem to closest to micromen in articulation).

I really wish they sold them larger, if they did, I would buy a ton of them.

Anyway.....VERYYYYYYYYY early WiP...like, just started this morning.

We did a podcast with Michael Norman, the creator of these. You can find it here:

http://www.imperialshipyards.net/CAFN/cafn37to42.html

It is the top podcast. Good stuff. We also helped promote a contest or two. I also know that Wookieballs Customs has used these and gotten pretty good results for SW Customs.

Great start by the way.

I'm really going to have to start investing in some arc troopers to make these, because I wanted to create a few of them....but at this rate, sculpting will take me forever.
I'm sure once complete, properly sanded, painted and decked out they'll come out fine, but it'll take a life time due to sculpting little by little.

Update on progress so far.

As of right now, I'm concentrating on building him out, and as I go along, I'll sharpen the edges and sand things down, so ignore the lumpy unsanded parts right now  ;D

I really do wish they made this figure a bit taller, because the articulation is fantastic.  Maybe I'll try what the maker does by cutting is lower leg to make it longer.

"Almost" ready to be painted.  I need just need to redo his left bicep band (make it wider to match the one on the right) and add his left wrist band.  Other than that, and some sanding to smooth things out, I should be pretty close to doing a full paint job.  (not including possible accessories after the paint job)

Thanks everyone.  I always tend to put myself down when it comes to sculpting and painting, so to hear positive feedback picks me up.
Mando, with my next Alpha, that's exactly what I'm going to do, I'm going to make him taller, as Michael Norman did with his alpha (the guy that sells them).

Anyway, here he goes.  He was a pain to paint due to the size, but all in all, even due I still need to learn to tighten my sculpting, I think he came out pretty good.

Thanks.  My problem, and the reason why I downplayed him, is that I really wanted something along the lines of a stitchfett figure.  For obvious reasons, that just wasn't going to be the case, but I still can't help but be jealous of his skills.

So, this is how I'm getting around the Alpha's short stature.  I cut between the lower leg, inserted a styrene tube, and sculpted around it.

Now, the alpha is about as tall as a pretty tall joe, and slightly taller than your standard SW figure.  I'm gonna have fun with these Alphas.

And...here....we....go......Darth Sion (from Knights of the Old Republic):

I had a lot of fun creating him, because I never did something like this....creating scars with blood showing underneath.

Recipe:
*GI Dreadnought figure
*Some soft goods
*Aves apoxie for shoulder pad, boot straps, plates on skirt, and all over body and head to create scars
*Shoulder piece is attached via mini magnet, so I can remove it and put it back on pretty easily.  I did it so that he had full mobility of the arm.
*Primed black with multiple layers of dry painting to get a dead skin look (and various red paints for blood)
*Used costume jewelry from Michaels for the bolts
 * I didn't have any spare ligthsabers, so I made one from styrene tubes.

Anyway, hope you enjoy:

You've perfectly captured the Frankenstein's Monster look of Scion. He was always one of the scariest villains in the Star Wars universe to me because his will was just so powerful that he refused to lay down and die, even after his body had been pushed so far past its breaking point again and again and again.

I put it back up.  I meant to take down my Deadpool auction since someone I know is buying him, and I took down the wrong auction.

I like your Mando.

I've been wanting to customize a Mando for a while now. I've seen some of the Mando Mercs at various comic/sci-fi shows in the last year or so and have a few ideas. Just need to sit down and start.

Here's a Superman I made for a friend of the family for Christmas.  He's an incredibly big Superman fan, so I figured it'd be the perfect gift.

I'm not really into Superman myself, but I figured what the heck, let me give him a go.  The pictures didn't come out too well....but thankfully, Santa is bringing a new camera for my wife tomorrow, so moving forward, my pictures should look better (unless it's just my picture taking skills that blow).

Hope you enjoy my rendition of a classic Superman.  He was made using a Captain America head and Fantomex (not sure if spelled right) body.  I sculpted the hair, did work on the face to remove the mask, sculpted boots, "S", belt and some sculpt around body so that he wouldn't look so "cut".  The cape has wire in it, painted red and can be posed how he'd like, and attaches to Superman via super magnets, so cape won't fall off.

Thanks T for the ego boost. :)

Here's my next custom.  Some of the pics came out blurry, but it's because my wife and I got a new camera, and I'm still learning how to use it.  It's a custom I made of a character from a comic series called Youngblood (Image comics), and his name is Diehard.

He is made using a Marvel figure, and stands about 4.5" tall.  He has some sculpt, and was painted and sealed.  I love the articulation of these marvel figures, too bad they're too bulky for Star Wars customs.

Hope you enjoy.

So I decided to take the first 6" Deadpool I made and redo him.  Back when I made him, I was still learning different painting techniques and looking back, I wasn't too crazy about him.

So, I stripped him of all his paint, re-did the paint job, and added accessories which he didn't have before.  Let me know what you think.

Hey all, just thought I'd drop in and mention a few words regarding some new'ish sculpting putty that you guys may not be aware of.

Just got my order today of "ProCreate".  I tried it on a few things like shoulder pads, foot armor, etc.  I gotta say....this may be my go to epoxy (not even sure if it's "epoxy").
I've never used greenstuff, so I'm not sure if it's like greenstuff.  My only experience is with Aves and Milliput products.  So far, from the very little I've used of it, here are some things I've noticed.

* Is no where near as messy as Aves Milliput.

* Has a more plastic like feel, which is great for my kind of customs

* Takes details VERY easy.  This is especially important, as I didn't have to mess around with using it much at all.  I pretty much shaped it, put little details into it, and that's it.  I've found Aves to be a pain to work at times.

* It's harder to work with...literally, when you mix the 2 parts, it's not soft like Aves.  I know with Aves and Milliput, you need to let it sit some time to thicken up to be able to work with it, but problem with that, is that by then, it starts to lose it's stickyness so it then ends up hard to stick to plastic.  Not the case with ProCreate.

I don't know how well it'll work for sculpting things like faces or other organic stuff, but so far....I'm really liking it.

Literally, in a few minutes, I mixed it and was able to put on the foot armor, should pads and leg band without any issues, no mess, and really easy.  It also appears to be much smoother and plastic like.

I know you guys are probably getting tired of my non-Star Wars customs, but here goes another.
This one is of DC's supervillain, Deathstroke.  He's of my own concept design, because usually Deathstroke sports a full helmet, and I decided to have him sport a face mask of sorts.

He was made from a 4.5 Hyperion figure, and every single armor piece is fully sculpted.

I've put him up on Ebay just in case anyone is interested.

And for all the SW fans, here goes my latest mando.  I really like how this one turned out.  I went back and forth as to whether or not I should make the helmet removable (was initially thinking of gluing it on the head), but decided to go all out.

I wish I could say he was over complicated to make, but the truth is, the parts are really basic.  The trick is coming up with a design that makes an average figure look above average, with a proper painting scheme to go along with it.

He was made using the following:
Helmet - Jango helmet with the parts cut out.
Head - from an Alpha Blanx figure, facial hair painted in.
Body - GI Joe Retaliation alley viper
Should pads - sculpted on using Procreate
Belt - leather strip (or fake leather, not sure) from Michaels
Back pack - from some gi joe figure, not sure.  Tempted to say it came from the Dreadnoks pack from Bigbadtoystore.
Chain - from Michaels
Pouches on belt - cut out from a 6" captain america figure's vest
Soft goods on back - cut out from old pair of shorts

The rest is just painting and weathering.

Here are a few more customs that are still in early WiP phases.

From left to right:

1. A new Mando with helmet sculpted (running out of mando helmets, and I wanted to try a unique take on a mando's helmet.
2. A "black ops" like trooper
3. Lady Snake Eyes
4. Concept Avalanche (my version of him) from Marvel comics

My "black ops/ghosts" trooper should be finished with the paint today, so I'll probably show it later.  I liked how he came out.

I'm also "almost" done with my 6" Lady Snake eyes.  Her body is painted and complete, just need to finish up on the face mask.  Front part of mask is fully sculpted, but need to finish rounding out the back of her head.

He was made from a Snake Eyes figure.  All of the leg armor is sculpted on.  The small shoulder pads are also sculpted on.  The helmet is your standard snow trooper helmet (it sits on a gi joe head, which I didn't take pics of).  The weapon is GJ Joe, and I used sports tape for the sling.  The chest gear is from some GI Joe, don't remember who.  The rest is paint, dry brushing, etc.

Alright, like I show earlier, I had 4 customs I was working on.  I recently showed my Ghost Trooper, and now I have the 6" Lady Snake Eyes complete (2 more WiPs to finish, and then I'll start on others).

As far as I know, there are no known Lady Snake Eyes customs, and that's probably due to her not being a real character in GI Joe.  Snake Eyes is my favorite ninja, so I figured I'd make Snake Eyes...but with the feminine twist.

As promised, my latest Mando, and this one is not a bounty hunter...but an assassin.

As usual, he was made using a GI figure, sculpt work, and finished off with acrylic paints.  I decided to sculpt a face mask instead of using the traditional Boba Fett/Jango Fett look, because not all Mandos look the same.

Hope you enjoy.

Really love the helmet sculpt on the Mando assassin. I agree that the Mando's all shouldn't have precisely the same armor, feels a little too clone trooper-ish.

Thanks.  Speaking of clones.........here goes a bunch I'm working on.  They're pretty rough right now, because I'm traveling for work, and I pack the figures and apoxie and sculpting tools, but no sandpaper, so I have nothing to sand down the rough parts.
I figured while I'm away from the family, I could dedicate the free evening hours to sculpting.
I get back home tomorrow, but when I do, I'll be working on finishing up Mandalore the Great for the contest, and then I'll get back to working on these clones and the female mando assassin.  (the kama on one of them is just hotel tissue.  I used it as a placeholder to get an idea of how it would look)

Now that I'm back home from traveling, I was able to finish up on my female Mando assassin.

I love how she came out.  You know the deal...sculpted armor parts, arcylic paints, typical mando weathering and sealed to protect against paint rub.

Enjoy.

You know, I've always wanted to start my auctions low, but I've always been afraid that it would sell.......at 99 cents, lol.

I've decided to take a risk and start it at 99 cents.  Let's see what happens.

While I was watching this post, my 4 year old son saw this awesome female Mando Assassin, and his first reaction was: "Dad! Are you going to make that cool man for me to!?" I explained to him that this actually is a girl... a dangerous girl... he went on playing quietly for a couple of minutes to finally return to me to ask: "I think I don't mind it being a girl, could you please make her for me? I will make sure Darth Vader won't be to hard on her" :)

So, my question now is: Do you mind if I copy this awesome lady for my son in our #Buildingtoysformyson project? (See here: http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=9614.0 (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=9614.0))

That story made me giggle, BA.

That reserve might scare em off. We will see.
I think when a buyer holds the winning bid and knows he or she will get it if it ends with their bid, they already feel as if they own it, if just a little bit. They might be more apt to fight for it against an opposing bidder.

I usually create open auctions to create traffic as those types of auctions seem to get a different visibility in the search results then the store auctions do. The gambling aspect of bidding on something is the bigger part of it.
Of course, if you list cool different custom mando items like three weeks in a row, your traffic and resulting bids should grow like a weed.
I didn't read the auction. Does it say what the reserve price was?

It's $40, but yeah, I think there isn't enough time to really do much.

I'm still an Ebay noob, so I'm still learning as I go along.  However, I'm thinking that I might eventually stop selling through ebay, because I'm getting to a point where I might want to keep what I create.  I really only sold on Ebay to get funds to feed my hobby, but at the same time, it bums me out to get rid of what I make.

Hey guys, I don't know if I've mentioned it, but I'm a VERYYYYYYY big Call of Duty fan, and have been playing the games for years with family members.

For some time now, I've been seeing other people make "Call of Duty" figures, and have been wanting to do so, to represent myself and my 2 cousins, for the clan that we play in.

I decided to finally get off my butt and do, and here they go.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them (and enjoyed playing the game).
May I present....clan SMDB (don't ask).

Kandosii!  Sweet Mando!  As per the colors, that depends on which variant you want.  For example, his gauntlets are green in Empire Strikes Back and red in Return of the Jedi.  I personally like ROTJ version better.

I was just getting ready to say TESB Version is best, but I am so biased. I also read some fiction where he varies his colors and even beskar gam combinations so he isn't recognized sometimes too. I think its pretty much wide open.

So I decided to play around with a little sculpting.  This is my very first attempt at a real head sculpt using clay (then baked and painted).  I have never done a head sculpt ever, just adding apoxie here and there on existing heads.
I've always wanted to try doing a from scratch head sculpt, but was always hesitant, because I felt I wasn't "there" yet in my sculpting abilities.  anyway, for a first time out, I think he actually came out pretty darn decent.

That's my first "real" attempt at a from scratch face sculpt.  When I was young, I played around with play dough, but I wouldn't call what I did real recognizable faces (lol).

Other than when I was young, everything I've done now has been adding epoxie to existing figure heads...but nothing from scratch.

Ok, taking a slight break from Star Wars figures.

Since my last Daredevil sold, I figured I'd make a new one.  6" tall figure with some sculpt, and total repaint to give him that menacing Daredevil look.

Hope you enjoy.

I know some of you may have seen in some of my WiP pics, this image of a female marvel legend figure, we'll, here she goes.

My daughter for a lonnnnggggg time has been wanting me to make her a Harley Quinn figure, and boy have I procrastinated.  I initially was going to make her gi joe sized, but since I took so long, my wife insisted that I make her 6".  Over a month ago, I started dremeling parts off of her and sculpting, but Harley Quinn really isn't someone I was in any rush to do, so it took me forever.

Anyway, with my daughter starting her spring break this week, I figured what better chance to finish her and give it to her.  She's 14 so she doesn't play with figures, but she has a spot on a shelf to put her on.  She has no weapons, but I'm thinking of making a hammer for her.

Pre paint, but finished sculpt (white sculpt is Fixit, grey is ProCreate):

Finished painting today (might do some "wash" on some areas, not sure yet):

But Harley.... wow. She turned out great, man, really great. Love the corset you have sculpted, heck, the entire attire looks terrific. I have the same Hope Summers figure in the works as a She-Ra for a friend of mine. Awesome base figure for six inch females!

Keep up this excellent level!

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

And Mr. Black, it means a lot coming from you, because I really love your work.  I know what you mean about progressing.  Hell, in the beginning, I didn't know about things like dry brushing, washing, etc.

Did your daughter like it?

She loved it.  It's funny, because she had seen on and off the progress I was making with the figure, but to a 14 year old, seeing it in bits and pieces with unpainted sculpt isn't so impressive.  It wasn't until she saw the final product that she was like, wow, thanks dad, I love it.

Wait to you guys see the 6" Cable I'm working on.

Fully sculpted cybernetic arm, straps, gun holster, shoulder pads, hair, etc.  He's going to be a beast.

I'll probably get some pre-painted images up later today.
Title: Re: Bronxstalker's customs (Pg 17 Harley Quinn & Daredevil)
Post by: Bronxstalker on April 09, 2015, 11:52:29 AM
Here goes my work in progress 6" Cable.  I sculpted his hair, eyebrows, chest harness, cybernetic arm, pistol holster and leg staps.  His extra large shoulder pads are also fully sculpted, and can be removed.  I still have some additional things to do with the shoulder pads, but almost done.  His rifle attaches to his back via these mini strong magnets, and can also attach to the shoulder pad's back as well via magnet.  His boots were taken from a gears of war figure, as was his belt, with the belt pouches removed from another part, and added to the belt.  His hands also from a gears of war figure.
Oh, and I also sculpted a bit around his jaw line and chin to give him a thicker face.

I can't wait until he's finished and fully painted, he'll be straight up in beast mode.

Post by: Bronxstalker on April 10, 2015, 07:41:07 AM
Thanks.  I can't wait to paint him either.  I just need to run out and get some primer first.

Those shoulder pads were a pain to get down.  It required me to build out the base first using styrene and then sculpt over the styrene.  I also had to retrofit the Gears of War hands to the pegs for the figure, so it would fit properly.
The hollowing out of the boots were also a challenge, because the plastic (or rubber, whatever it was) was really hard, and it made my dremel work.  I think it might be a very hard rubber, and not plastic, but not too sure.

All in all, everything fit perfectly once modded properly.  The paint job will really make him stand out.

Ok, update on Cable.  He is complete and primed, and face is painted.  Now, I just need to paint the rest of him.  I even sliced out scar on his face to make him more accurate.

Title: Re: Bronxstalker's customs (Pg 18: CABLE!!!!!!!)
Post by: Bronxstalker on April 18, 2015, 01:33:26 PM
Ok, Cable, is.....done.  I would have finished him sooner, but we've been going through an upgrade at work, and this week, work wise, has just been really hectic, long hours, etc.

Anyway, here he goes, finally.  Most parts are sculpted, except for the belt and the GoW boots, and of course, weapons.  I fully sculpted his shoulder pads and made them so that they can attach to him via magnets.  His rifle attaches to either his back or shoulder pads by magnets as well.  He stands at almost 7" tall, so a bit taller than your standard Marvel figures.

Enjoy:

I've been pretty busy working on a couple of commissions, but for the past couple of weeks, in between the commissions, I've been working on this new Mandalorian.  As far as I know, there hasn't been an orange themed mando, so this might be a new color scheme....and I really like how it came out.

Orange is the new black.....some joe parts, head cast from Clonehead, sculpted armor parts except for upper chest armor.  Sculpted belt pouches.  Modified blaster to attach to leg.

Hope you all enjoy:

Pretty much.  I didn't go looking for it intentionally.  I had literally just finished mowing the lawn the other day, and when I do, some mulch usually finds it's way to the driveway.  As I was sweeping it back, I saw this large one, and was like "oh, I think I have use for that".   ;D

You know, every now and then....I have to go back to a GI Joe character, mainly....Snake Eyes.  I just love him to death.

This time, instead of making your standard GI Joe looking Snake Eyes, just another Joe dressed in black wearing a mask, I decided to make this one having more of a comic book ninja look to him.  In order to get that look, I ditched using a GI Joe base, and went with a Marvel Universe base figure.  All staps, belt, and pouches are sculpted.  Painted black, but dry brushed using blue so muscular details stand out.

He stands at 4" tall, so he's taller than your stand GI Joe figure.

Hope you enjoy:

Alright, here's goes a bunch of stuff I've either completed, or am working on at the moment (and have not shared images).

I figure I'd just dump them all here, instead of smaller updates.

First up, a few WIPs.
Here's a 6 man trooper squad that I'm working on.  Actually, I started them months ago, but put them aside as I worked on other projects.  One day, I'll complete this team :)

Next is my very first custom of Galen Marek.  The belt and rags are just place holders right now, and I still need to work on his hair, but other than minor additions, he's almost ready and then I'll move on to painting him.

Since I sold off my Call of Duty Ghosts team, I decided to make more for myself.  Three of them will be for me, the other 2 will to my cousins that play CoD with me.

Next are my completed projects:

A Sith apprentice (not named).  I'm happy with how this one came out.  I don't have any figure lightsabers.....so I used......are you ready......plastic toothpicks.

This one is a custom Hondo Karr in mandalorian armor that I was commissioned to work on.  I'm not familiar with the character, since I don't read the comics, but he came out pretty close to what the client asked for.  he's done, I just need to attach the kama permanently.  (also reference image to see what he looks like).

The next completed custom is another commission piece from a different customer that had previously purchased the last Daredevil I worked on.  He asked me to make a custom 6" Shatterstar based on the reference image I provided.  I'm exceptionally proud of how this one came out.  Custom sculpted boots, knee pads, pouches on leg, belt, hair, and partial face mask.  I also custom made the swords using the plastic from a "for sale" sign and the sheath that houses the swords on his back.

Whew, that's it for now, hope you all enjoy.

The tips are rounded off, but the toothpick's shape is a tad bit oval'ish, instead of perfectly rounded, but it's very slight, and if you don't pay close attention, you'd not even notice.

Here's a custom that I was commissioned to work on, of a mandalorian named Vevec.  He's another one that I'm not familiar with, since I don't read the comics.

He came out pretty close to the reference images he sent me, but I weathered him up in your typical mandalorian war torn fashion.  I hope he likes it.  I think he came out really nice.  Lots of sculpting modifications to get him to look like the reference images.

Oh yeah, thanks for the reference images.  By the way, he also sent me these as reference images for the legs since there weren't good images of Vevec's legs.  So he told me to go with these (I think I got pretty close to the look):

I see that marauder task force figures are now up for sale.  I just ordered a few....I already have some mando ideas using those figures as bases.  Can't wait until they arrive.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I need to unload some figures for cash.  I may have bit off more than I can chew in purchasing a bunch of figures for customizing...but I find that between work and life, I don't have the time to customize everything I've purchased, so I'll be dumping some of them.
I've put up a lot of 15 figures for pretty cheap for the amount of bodies you get.  I may be looking to dump some of the 6" figure base bodies I got as well.  I picked up way too many for me to handle.  Perfect for customizing.

Ok, I'm finally done with my custom Galen Marek figure.  I'm REALLY happy with how he came out.  The sculpting, the paint job, even the real leather that I used adds to the look of the figure.  I love the little things I did to make him stand out, like using mini magnets to attach the shoulder pad.  That way, he has full range of motion of his arm, and the shoulder pad always stays on without risk of snapping off, or hindering motion.
I like him so much, that I plan on making another one.

Hope you enjoy.

Great detailing and I like the magnets in the shoulder armor. I've made articulated armor with rubber and flexible Loctite cement, but this seems a lot less messy.
That's not real leather, is it?  Please tell how you did it.

Yep, it's real leather.  I had asked my wife to go to the hobby and crafts store and pick me up something that was thin and leather like, but not leather.  She found this leather that looked perfect for the figure, but it was a lot of leather and not as cheap.  I told her I wanted something thin, and it wasn't thin, but she insisted that real leather would add to the look of the figure.

Since it was thick, I had to look up how to thin leather.  I thinned it, and it turned out great.

Here goes my next WiP.  It's in it's VERYYYYYY early stages, so it doesn't look like much.  My aim is to make a Del Moomo that is very inspired by Sith_Fire30's Del Moomo....ie, I'm copying his work :)

Anyway, like I said, very early stages, so not much to show.  I took an old hammerhead figure, cut off his head, hands and feet and attached it to a marvel figure (for the extra height).  I sculpted the lower leg boot portion (but still need to add the laces to one of them).
This one is going to take a lot of sculpt work, I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew.

I hope you guys don't tire from seeing yet another Mandalorian.  And yes, I will be making even more.
Anyway, here goes my latest Mandalorian.  Same deal as usual, I started with a base GI Joe figure, some sculpting, acrylic paints, and weathering to get the typical Mandalorian battle worn look.  Under the helmet is an Alpha Blanx head, and I slice down his eye to give him a scar (hard to see in the images).
This is the first time I used a metallic gold on a mandalorian.  I know in the images it looks yellow, but it is gold.
I hope you all enjoy.

You can make all the Mandalorians you'd like, and I'll never tire of seeing them. Love the color scheme on this one, never would have thought the more military green would look cool with gold, though is it plain gold? Looks a bit darker than typical gold paints, but definitely enhances the look, and what body did you use as a base?

Thanks....I have another Mandalorian that's finished, I just need to take pictures of him, and another one that I am currently in the process of finishing up on.

The gold paint is called Metallic Glorious Gold.  It was painted over black primer, and then weathered, so it looks even darker.

The base figure was a gi joe alley viper:

Here's my update on Del Moomo.  Obviously still a WiP, but I'm getting close to finishing him.  I still have quite a bit of sculpting to do on the arms, arm bands, shoulder pads, etc.  I also need to create his red scarf that he has.  After that, just a few more odds and ends, and then time for painting.

Ok, Del Moomo is complete.  Whew, that took quite a bit of work.  So much sculpting went into him.  I used marvel infinite Hyperion figure, because I wanted the articulation and size.  Looking up Ithorians, I see that they're pretty large, some as tall as 8 feet.  I know that the official hammerhead figures tend to not convey proper scaled size, but ithorians are tall.
So the base figure was a dremeled down Hyperion, although you can't tell, due to all of the sculpt used on him.  The head, hands and feet were from an old Hammerhead figure.  I had to cut his head in half, in order to make the base head longer, and then resculpted those side scaled things (whatever they are).  The eyes in the hammerhead figure were also just thin slits, so I had to resculpt the eyes.  The should pads are attached via magnets, so that his arms retain full articulation.

The other 2 figures are mandalorians that I was working on.  The first one is using those new marauder task force figures by marauderinc (cool figures by the way) and the second one a gi joe figure.

Since ithorians are tall, I included an image with all 3 together to show how he scales next to them.
(I suck at taking pictures, so small details like the various shades of a base color go unnoticed.
Enjoy:

Thanks.  I do find that "official" figures tend to get scaling wrong.  I mean, according to the star wars wiki site, the ithorian height range has the tallest Ithorians at being taller than Chewbacca......meanwhile, in figure form, we get something that is shorter than Greedo, yet according to the wiki site, the shortest ithorian should still be slightly taller than Greedo, lol.

I'd have to agree about the height, but has hasbroken ever really cared about scale? I feel they just make things whatever size they feel like. Your Del Moomo is sweet, so much work, but turned out fantastic! The only thing I think could upgrade it is Roron Corobb feet, a bit more HD version of the classic you used.

I agree with MsComicStar86, great job for making this Ithorian tall like they are supposed to be. All of the custom Ithorians that I make I always make sure to make them tall. Really cool!

I know this isn't a figure, but I figured I'd drop this here since there's no "sculpture" section  ;D

Over the weekend, I decided to order some super sculpey to try my hand in the sculpting busts department.  I heard some good things about super sculpey, especially in that it feels and looks almost skin like.
After a little while with it yesterday....I gotta say, I really like it.  Too bad it needs to be baked, because I would have loved to use this on figures.  Oh well.
Here's what I slapped together fairly quick.  Basic out of this world head and some texture work to make it look even more like skin.

That is a really nice sculpt.
Is it any alien we know or your imagination?
Either way,  if this was the trial run,  I can't wait to see what you do in the future.

You still can use it for a figure. You just have to dremel  out a peg hole on the bottom.   If you don't have a dremel, you could try a power drill.  Fill the hole 1/3 full with something easy to carve like greenstuff and shove your head onto the peg.   When cured,  carve off the excess greenstuff till the head gets the range of motion you're looking for.

I'll have to try the supersculpey.
The unlimited work time intrigues me .

Thanks, it's just something that I was playing around with, to see how well I could do a head sculpt of an alien like creature.

As for working it on a figure...my fear is, super sculpey needs to be baked to harden, and I'm scared of melting the base figure.  I really love how the super sculpey feels, as it's incredibly smooth, almost rubber like, but not tacky like green stuff.  I use aves fixit on my figures, but texture wise, it's not as smooth as I'd like it to be while working with it (it's dries very smooth, but it's not the easiest to work with).  The problem with fixit, is that I need to let it sit for over half an hour before working with it, but by then, you're workable work time starts to decrease pretty quick.  It takes about 4 hours to cure, but well before then, it's already too tough to work with, so it's not so forgiving if you make mistakes.  Also, fixit isn't cheap, and because of it's nature, a lot of it ends up getting thrown away.

I've read somewhere that I could mix fixit with the super sculpey to extend the work time, but still will get hard without baking.  I'm going to give that a try.

Del Moomo turned out really well. I happen to agree with you about scale in Star Wars figures - its all over the board. Love the Mandos as well. I'm always impressed with your skill and attention to detail. Love the Scupley head sculpt as well.

When I heard that we were getting 5 PoA figures, I was bummed out, so I decided to make my own Kylo Ren.
He uses a Marauder Task Force base figure, so not only does he have exceptional articulation, but he stands at a tad bit over 4".

I have to redo the belt as it came out rough, and I need to redo the lightsaber, as I didn't make it long enough, but you get the idea of what the finished figure is like.
The helmet is fully sculpted over a snake eyes head, and I even made sure to sculpt the back of the helmet as to what I've seen on the web (even though it remains hidden under the hood for the most part).  At this scale, it wasn't easy doing the helmet, but I think it looks pretty decent.

Happy Force Friday.

Original helmet sculpt.   WOW!   nicely done.
I like the soft goods too.

BTW,  I know what you mean about the Sculpey. It would be great for accentuating  plastic if it weren't for the baking.  I ruined about 2 hours of sculpt work by baking it on a base of 2 component plastic repair resin.

On the bright side of that experiment,  I know what medium to use if ever make  Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru from their last scene. 8-o

Aves and Greenstuff are what I use for sculpting.   I only mix what I think I can use in about 30 minutes.

Yep. that's what I use on figures as well.  Depending on what I'm doing, I'll either just use aves fixit, or just greenstuff...or a mixture of both.

Hey guys, I was commissioned to do a Commander Ganch in 3.75" scale from a returning customer.
Almost done with him, I still need to work on his head underneath.  I'm also going to throw in an alternate helmet, which I'm still working on.

It was supposed to be simple repaint using the base figure, but I asked him if I could take it step further and make him more Commander Ganch accurate, but creating the round pauldron, adding the holsters to hang from pauldron, and to create the head underneath to look like baldy Ganch.

Enjoy:

Thanks.

Here goes my latest clone.  After working on the commission, it put me in a clone mood, so I put together this latest clone using what I called throw away parts.  It's made using the arms and lower legs of the chunkier saga clones and the torso/upper legs of the animated clones.
I went that route, because honestly, I'm not crazy about how skinny the animated clone figures are, however, after the leg/arm swap....I'm REALLY digging how the clone came out.  It's like...a more stylized version of an animated clone, while looking more fierce and less cartoony (don't know if I'm making sense).
He's then totally repainted using camo grey (I like it better than just white), blues, weathering and washed.

Enjoy:

Nothing major here, just a shock trooper that I was commissioned to make.  Almost done, just need to add additional paint stripes on the helmet and legs.
Also, another animated styled snake eyes for my own collection, nothing major, just a repaint of a steve rogers figure, with some abdomen/knee armor sculpt and fodder.

Not sure if you guys remember, but about a year ago, I was supposed to make a 6" Mandalore the Ultimate.  It didn't take me a year to make, but I kinda put him away and never went back to him.  Anyway, recently, I started working on him again, and he's almost finished.  The below was the image I posted about a year ago, but since then, I've got his other parts sculpted and ready to go.  I just need to get him painted and the soft goods added.  Hopefully I get some images up soon.

Here goes Mandalore the Ultimate.  He stands at about 6.5" tall.  My pic taking skills are teh suck, in person, he looks a whole lot better.

All armored pieces are either sculpted or are made with styrene sheeting.  His shoulder pads connect via magnets, so that they can cling on over the cloak.

Wow, he turned out amazing, and with 6" Revan coming out, your going to be able to put together a badass showdown. Is that canvas for his cape, or painted cloth? Whatever it is, the thickness adds to him, for the descriptions of Mandalorians wearing such things are that they are made from thick hides to protect from shrapnel damage. Nice magnet usage on the shoulder plates, I have the same plan for my 3.75" scale one when I get around to him. Super job overall, I really enjoy him.

Thanks.  It's a fabric I got from Joann's, which was almost like denim, but thinner.  It was black, and painted in red, with some brown and yellow weathering here and there, which doesn't show in the photo since it's so subtle.

The Marauder base figure works really well for this figure. The paint job is fabulous!

No, I don't mind.  Most of my work is inspired by others as well.

I have a few updates to post, just need to get around to taking pictures.  Here's a completed 6" Obi Wan in clone armor I put together using a black series clone and a custom sculpted beard/hair.  I also dremeled down the clone's upper legs and torso/chest piece so that I could use fabric for his under suit.
I also weathered him up to look like he's tired from fighting.

Enjoy

Another mando I completed a few weeks ago, but didn't have a chance to post due to busy work schedule.  I have a few others I finished, and am finishing up on, and will post those soon as well.  The images came out a bit overly bright, because, well...I suck at taking pictures :(

Thanks guys.

Here goes another Mando I worked on.  I have a few others that I'll post, and then I'll try to stray away from mandos and do something different.  Like, I'm currently working on another Darth Sion as well as a Savage Oppress.  I also have clones in the works (both 6" and 3.75").

Some non mandos as promised.

My concept version of a clone airborne trooper.  Armor is fully sculpted over a Snake Eyes figure:

This one is just some random un-named bounty hunter.  I had no clear direction with this one.

Here's some 6" WiP that I need to get my butt moving to finish.  Starkiller in his dark lord armor, using a black series Kylo Ren figure.  I dremeled down the figure, and sculpted the hell out of him.  The small shoulder pads are held on by elastic bands, so that he retains full arm articulation.
The other is a concept mandalorian I'm making out of a black series snowtrooper.  I removed his chest armor, and sculpted over the figure.

Thanks.  That movie is one of my favorites as well.  I've seen it so many times, and my wife simply doesn't get the appeal.  It was just such a darn gritty movie, especially for it's time.  The music was top notch.  I had even modded my Morrowind game back when I played it, to play the Conan theme.

I'm a glutton for punishment.  I wanted one of those Titanfall 6" Threezero figures, but at a few hundred dollars, it's well beyond my price range.......so I decided to make my own, using a standard marvel legend figure.

It's still a work in progress, but here's my humble beginnings and where it's at currently.

I really need to go find these games as they look really cool. Hopefully they come in the PS4 platform. I got it last year and didn't get much time to play it. This game might alleviate that.

Great custom. Off to share.

Another tough looking Mando. Off to share it and your auction.

I cannot wait for Xmas now till I get to play Titanfall 2. I am seriously eyeing that 1 to 1 scale Helmet that comes with him in the hopes of creating a full on outfit for it. Have you seen that helmet that comes with some versions of the game? Fantastic!

Here's a 6" Mandalorian (my second Mandalorian at this scale).
I'm actually VERY stoked about how he came out, and after seeing how he came out, I plan on making a ton more in this scale.  He started off as a black series first order stormtrooper, added some sculpted armor parts, and totally repainted.
As far as the painting goes, this is my second figure where about 95% of his paint job is totally airbrushed, even his guns are airbrushed.  A few months back, I bought an airbrush so that I could use it for hard to paint colors (whites, yellows, some reds, etc).  All his blacks and reds are totally airbrushed.  I love airbrushing now.  The paint job comes out so incredibly smooth.  Also, it allows for some wicked shading effects.
I was planning on putting him up for sale on Ebay, but someone jumped to buy him before I even had a chance.

Thanks guys.

Here's a 3.75" Mando that I'm almost finished painting.  I'll post better pictures once he's totally complete, but I couldn't wait to show him off.  He was supposed to be Rohlan Dyre, but I got lazy and didn't want to tackle on his helmet, mostly because I wasn't sure how good it would come out.
Anyway, like my Del Moomo, he's about a 98% pure sculpted figure.  I took a GI Joe figure, and dremeled him down completely to a skeletal frame (like what Sith_fire30 does).

I'm rather fond of how he came out.  Eventually, I plan on doing something similar with this character (total sculpted figure) but in 6" scale.

Here's two 6" scale figures that I was commissioned to make.
I'm not familiar with the characters, but I had fun making these.  Customed sculpted parts (hair, armor, head, shoulder pads, etc).  The shoulder pads attach via straps, so articulation is not hindered.
The shoulder pads on the second figure were a major pain.  I had to sculpt them from scrath, and tons of sanding to get the finish ultra smooth to look like metallic armor.
All parts disassembled to treat for paint rub.
Paint job is mostly airbrushed to get a crazy smooth finish.
First figure is of Supreme, and the second one is of Prototype.

I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote on my facebook customs page:
Here goes my latest Mandalorian Jungle Scout in 6" scale.  He was complete weeks ago, but I hadn't gotten around to properly weathering him...but now he's totally complete.
A ton of details went into making this tough Mando.  Everything from custom sculpted parts (parts of helmet, chest armor, abdomen armor, thigh armor and knee pads, belt) to even soft goods with a shoulder strap that has a real mini buckle clip (yes, you may unclip it).
He's up for sale if anyone is interested.

Concept "I'm not going back to Jakku" Finn complete.  I know he's not the most popular character to customize, but I dig the look a lot.
3 figure parts went into him, minor sculpting, and shoulder pad attached via elastic strap, so articulation is no hindered in any way.

Here goes Mandalore the Ultimate in 6" scale.  I sculpted the face mask some of the chest armor and the shoulder pads.  Shoulder pads are removable and use elastic straps to put on so the articulation isn't hinder.
I used a Klyo Ren cloak, painted in red and roughed up.
Enjoy.

Thanks, he's been thoroughly soap scrubbed, and is ready for priming.  I'll let the primer sit for a couple of days, and then I'll start painting.  Hopefully by Monday I can show him off completed.

Here goes Rohlan Dyre, in 6" scale.  I've searched the web, and I think I may be the first person to have made him in 6" scale (not sure).

That looks really great, man. Clearly Rohlan from the first viewing, instantly.

Love the paint scheme and shading on his outfit. I do spot some areas of improvement, such as the armour on his abdomen, the sculpting on his lower legs, shoulder spikes, but that's all meant as constructive criticism. You should make Rohlan your ongoing project. You know, make a 2nd version, a 3rd, until you've got your best version.

In any case, one helluva job, man! 8)

Yeah, I was using some new sculpting material called Magic Sculpt, and hot damn, that was a pain to use.

I've since gone back to Aves fixit.

My next project that I'm actually finishing up on, is Galen in his Lord Starkiller sith stalker outfit in 6" scale.

Ok, I'm finally done with my other project, Lord Starkiller in his Sith stalker outfit.
I took forever to complete him, because I started the sculpting on him, but kept putting him to the side as I completed other projects.
He's made from a Black Series Kylo Ren, and everything but the legs and hands were dremeled down to a skeletal frame, and re-sculpted over.
The helmet was an Iron Man helmet, mostly dremeled down and re-sculpted.  The light saber hilts were molded and casted so I can make more for other projects.
Oh, and the should pads are attached to straps, so his articulation isn't hinder too much.
I hope you enjoy viewing as much as I enjoyed making.

a "ghost trooper".  Saw a youtube vid of someone that did this on a bandai model kit, so I decided to make one, but using the black series figure.

The blue on the 501st Legion Clone Trooper is just perfectly authentic!
The Ghost Trooper looks great, too! The all white armor - especially the helmet - makes it look great and fresh! I'm a big fan of the new helmet designs of Rogue One!
Both look very realistic! Thanks for sharing!
