Mostly this is an accessory. It's always bothered me that Ak-rev didn't have both the instruments he played in Jabba's Palace.  It's taken about a month, but I've finally realized the Drumheller Harp.

It's made primarily from modified found objects, though some pieces were molded with InstaMorph plastic. There are some progress shots in the album on my Facebook page which I had shared here but FB moved things around and killed all my links. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.666000750102089.1073741826.665998250102339&type=3 (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.666000750102089.1073741826.665998250102339&type=3)

I'm jealous.  I want one too.
You dont have any WIPs do you?

Thanks for the front page share, Tamer! I'm honored. Thanks My kind of scum and Sjefke for your kind comments here and elsewhere... and you as well, smeagol92055!  I do have a few in progress shots...

My primary reference image was this from the Visual Dictionary:

The main body of the resonator was made from some kind of plastic spool I've had lying around forever topped with a dome made from InstaMorph plastic. After heating the plastic, I pressed it into the bottom of a spray can (coated with cooking spray) to achieve the right shape.

The rounded bottom portion of the resonator was eventually replaced with 1/2 of a Guinness widget - the other half was saved for the base.  Additional symbols were made from InstaMorph. The "tubing" pieces are a wooden skewer and a wood dowel rod.  Some of the pieces have already been base coated with brush-on copper colored acrylic paint.

More to follow as I sort through the remaining pics.

The lower resonator was made out of two strips of foamies. This picture shows the Guinness widget used on the base along with the foamie piece that makes up the sloped area of the base.

The base ended up being made up of several pieces: a cottage cheese container lid cut to size, the Guinness widget, the foamie circle...

and the outer edge of a coffee pod from Tassimo which are flat and round not cup shaped like Keurig.

The gong stand is another wood skewer. The lower music charm is the smallest bell I could find at the craft store. I removed the clapper and widened the opening to fit.
The O'Tawa cymbals were made from Instamorph as was the base of the gong stand.

The other music charm was made from some metal beads superglued together then surrounded by a cage crafted from small bits of a crossstich grid.

The toughest part was the large Screamer gong. I originally wanted to create it out of InstaMorph but I couldn't get it to look right. I settled on modifying a party favor game that I found at a Dollar Tree store.

I split it apart and tried to fill the holes.  I'll probably go back later and redo that part so it's smoother.

Remember all the plastic wrapped wire Hasbro used to use when packaging ships and larger items? I kept a lot of it because it makes good tubing.

Using a tiny drill bit for my Dremel, I drilled 8 holes in the base and 8 corresponding holes in the resonator for the Centressar strings (telephone wire I saved from an office remodel).

Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures

The rivets are pin heads carefully snipped from their pins (wear goggles!).

The Tryna chime for the top was made from some sparkly ribbon I spotted one day at Walmart. I crafted an inner frame from telephone wire and glued the ribbon to each side.

The circular chime mount comes from a small milk/creamer container.  If you've ever seen the dairy cartons that have a screw top pour spout there is usually a seal inside. I used the pull ring part for the Chime mount.

The ring had small holes drilled in the appropriate places and the wires were secured with superglue then snipped as close to the frame as possible.

The the plug part on the spout seal was sort of cymbal shaped so I pressed the InstaMorph over it to make the small O'Tawa cymbals seen here:

The last little bits and pieces were hotglued in place but I don't think I documented those last steps.  The main unit is all wired or glued together so it will stay as is, but I may redo the Screamer gong since the Gong stand is a separate piece.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions anyone has about the build.

You're welcome, Tamer. Thanks, everyone for all the nice comments. I really appreciate it!  I'll try to fill in pictures of some of the pieces I lacked photos for. I'm going to re-do the Screamer gong if I can find those little dollar store toys I seem to have misplaced. I need to clean my workshop/house!

Thank you, sir!

Jabba's Palace has been a bit of an obsession these last few months. I've shared a few figures on other boards which I've worked in, between building and tweaking band instruments:

Reworked an old Shasa Tiel (from early 2000's)

New:

Wrist articulation was added making new wrist pegs out of InstaMorph.

Repainted Bubo
(https://i.imgur.com/4z0teEN.jpg)

And EV-9D9 got some new articulation:

Nice, I am really starting to see instamorph as a pretty cool project. It wasn't too soft to do the wrist pegs? Looks like it wasn't.

Nice, I am really starting to see instamorph as a pretty cool project. It wasn't too soft to do the wrist pegs? Looks like it wasn't.

After jamming the soft IM into the wrist hole I let it cool completely before removing it, used the sanding wheel on my Dremel to shave off the extra and then superglued it to the hands. So far it's holding up fine. I think I'll have to rework the shoulder area due to paint rub before I have to fix the hands.  :)

I have the same issue. I really want to do the all the droids from the season 5 story arc where Meebur Gascon discovers Gregor. Right now I have the astromechs sitting in a drawer, the only one completed is R2 since he requires no work. Sausage fingers and small scale painting aren't a good combo. Stick with it man, the more you do the better you'll get.
Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures
Post by: customjedi on May 19, 2014, 06:51:32 PM
Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I plan to finish this drink droid. Using a jewler's magnifying visor helps the old eyes but noting steadies the old hands! I'm taking my time and stepping away for a bit until I can face the multiple attempts one little droid panel requires to get right. I think this is how Jedi *should* be trained. Patience, indeed!

Well... I finished my bartender droid in time to submit it for Yakfinties #52. I finally had to stop trying to "fix" all the little imperfections because I was going crazy. I think I may go back to protocol droids now. Much easier to paint! Here's basically how we see this little guy onscreen...

Thanks, Tamer and DarthSinister!

Here's another fix I've wanted to do for a long time...

The OT had three attractive actors in the leads so it's always irked me when we get figures that look like this:

I've wanted to rework the whole figure but I decided to start with the most offensive part. I was torn between replacing the head and trying to repaint it. This one ended up being hard to photograph. The make up looks more subtle to the naked eye.

Just a small update for Bib. Resculpted the lower mouth and chin area, did the wrist and neck transplants onto the Dofine body and began work on building a cloak. I'm going to try to take a quick cast of the vintage chest piece and replicate with InstaMorph (not sure if I can pull that off).

Made a press mold of the vintage Bib armor and replicated it with InstaMorph.  Once it's trimmed and cleaned up I think I'll be able to bring out the details with paint washes.  Taking a break from sewing to paint match the Dofine parts with the right teal/turquoise.

My friend across the pond, Colin (Colin's Customs), inspired me to tackle the head of Jabba's entourage. He had used the Daultay Dofine body as a base to rework Bib Fortuna (which was a brilliant idea in my opinion). Here's my take on Bib Fortuna for Yakfinities #52.

Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures
Post by: customjedi on July 05, 2014, 05:50:01 PM
Sure enough... as soon as I "finish" and take pictures I see what I want to fix.

First off, I didn't like that the placket on the original figure wasn't hidden by the chest armor. Since I found it distracting, I placed some InstaMorph over it so it would be smooth.

I also wanted to see if I could redo the armor and make it thinner.

I also missed the ability to sheath the knife so I added some elastic.

Did you take any WIPs of the mouth fix and did you tackle those loose seams of his lekku?
Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures
Post by: customjedi on July 10, 2014, 05:56:05 AM
Thanks, everybody! I'm glad I had a vintage Bib because it was invaluable on creating the cloak and armor. I still see things I'd do differently but I'm fairly happy with how the gang is coming along.

If I'd had any flexible sculpey I would have filled the lekku seams, but the additional paint aps diminish them somewhat. I may work that into the second Bib head that I have. I only have one bad in-process pic of the lower jaw & lip work.

THANKS, commander reaper  :)

I went to my Star Wars club meeting yesterday and wanted to customize as soon as I got home. Talking Star Wars with a group of fans always makes me want to make more Star Wars stuff. I ripped apart this guy.

And added some additional paint aps to Bubo and began oxidizing a metal chain.

I think you've been too busy making all the backgrounders in Jabba's Palace to have time for insecurity, Sjefke! But if it helps, it took about a week to oxidize Bubo's chain.

That gave me time to just about finish BoShek. Customizing multitasking!

Even though his deco is on the boring side, this one still took me a while. I wanted to update BoShek while staying true to Hasbro's original effort in so much as was possible.

Yes, the Power of the Jedi line gave us BoShek way back in 2002. I salvaged the helmet, head, boots and holster for my re-do.

The only thing that would make that better is seeing it on the pegs in a vintage cardback with a cantina scene.

I'd love to see BoShek on a vintage card!

I learned a technique (might be old news to some) while I was working on Bubo that I thought I'd share.

The chain I bought was a shiny, silver plated length of chain for jewelry making. Since it would not work as it was, I aged it without using harsh chemicals. The chain was placed in a sealed container with a hard-boiled egg yolk. Once the yolk was separated from the white, I crumbled it up and placed it in an empty deli meat container that I could throw out when I was done. You can use this to darken silver (plated too) and copper. Make sure the metal isn't touching the yolk and check on it often until it's dark enough. My piece took about three or four days. I let the container sit outside while the sulfur did its trick. I would not recommend removing the lid of your container indoors unless you are a fan of the smell of rotten eggs.

I'm continuing to pull out old customs and deciding which ones will be revisited. Here's CZ-3 from 2007. I repainted his face after stripping off most of the original Hasbro paint apps. He could use some additional weathering but he still holds up.

With the 5 POA and really lack of any significant three and three quarter inch news I can see how a few folks would feel this way. I think we are going to have to resign ourselves to the fact that for the regular size action figure line, 5 POA is going to be the rule, not the exception.

It seems that I am having customizing ADHD at the moment. Can't seem to concentrate on a chosen project and end up picking up other side projects instead. While digging through an old fodder box I decided to use some older parts that I might not otherwise use to update a different Cantina patron. The legs come from the Jedi Luke that came with the Skiff (I think) and the torso arms and boots are from the 2004 Vintage Collection Ben Kenobi.

I'm in the process of recreating Yerka Mig from the ground up to replace this outdated late-90's custom.

After completing the face paint, I think it's going to end up looking like Sam Jones (1980's Flash Gordon). I guess I'll live with that since I certainly don't want to have to paint a different head.
Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures
Post by: customjedi on August 07, 2014, 08:03:51 AM
Trying out a new finishing technique. I know a lot of people use Dull Coat but as I got back into customizing I wanted the pieces to fit in with my off the shelf figures (in so much as is possible). This time around I'm using a brush on matte varnish. Despite it being labeled as "matte," it's not really flat but not as shiny as a gloss finish. Interestingly, some parts of some figures were still slightly tacky feeling - which leads me to my new experimental finishing agent: talcum powder. Now I have a small ziplock bag of talc which a shake any tacky pieces in then brush off the excess. No sticky finish and my finished pieces now smell baby-fresh!

Thanks, Tamer. You were close! Yerka Mig uses some Han parts and the headcast looks very similar. I'm not sure what figure the cast was from. I chose it because of the shaggier hair, but after painting it I thought it kind of looked like Han as if he had been played by "Flash Gordon's" Sam Jones. At least I can scratch another update off my list.

Here's the unpainted headcast I got from StarWarsGeek (jokabofe on eBay) which I used for Yerka Mig. I think it's something from Marvel but I have no idea who. If anyone knows which fig it was from, I'd be curious to know. It does look a lot like a Han head but with a broader face and longer hair. The overall look changed some once it was painted, too.

On another note i ran into a similar problem for danz borin's helmet idk if you have a spare but i used the helmet from rum sleg.  I had to get creative for the closed visor so with careful work i used a piece of double sided stick tape and taped it to the inside to give it the closed helmet look. the reason i used the helmet was because its soft and can be manipulated  and can go right back into place. I hope that this bit of info  can help you out !

Thanks Tamer, RedLeaderOne & Mr.Jedi1977! Now that I've finished the entry platform, I can finally map out my Echo Base Command Center-something I've put off for several years.

I wish I had an extra Rum helmet, Mr.Jedi1977! I'm reworking the one I used the first time around. I think it came from an old Robocop figure. I'm trying to build a lower half out of Instamorph plastic but it hasn't come out right yet. I'll come back to it soon and get it resolved.

Thanks, JDeck, Tamer & mr.Jedi1977!

Still in my Hoth groove as I work towards wrapping up my photo story. I decided to test my skills by doing an update on General Rieekan.

Trying some things I haven't attempted before adding articulation to a 5pt fig.

Planning on ball-hinge shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles, swivel wrists, and ball jointed head. About half way there...

Thank you for the front page, Tamer. I have to give Stan credit for inspiring me to tackle the ball-hinge shoulders. He shared his Rieekan update with me as I was debating how to proceed with mine. It's more work, but I'm pleased with how it's coming along. I'll share the progress pics and steps when I wrap him up.

Glad I could inspire you right back, Stan! I went really slow dremelling out the head on Rieekan because I didn't want to slip up and give him a "scar" the character shouldn't have.

I am very curious how you managed to put the new arms into the  hollowed out shoulder/ body and got them to stay.

I used quick drying 2 part epoxy, mr.Jedi1977. I was going to use Miliput but my stash had dried out. Ended up using Loctite epoxy that I had from a home repair project.

I just put a wad into the socket and inserted the arm. I used a toothpick to clear off the stuff that squished out. After the initial 10 minute cure time, I very carefully began rotating the arm to make sure it could move. Once it was dry to full strength, I carefully tested for full movement. It's permanent, so make sure everything fits the way you want it before you add the putty. I noticed too late that one arm isn't quite deep enough...

Nice job haha I also just noticed I follow you on Instagram.  ;D

It's great to connect who's who on all our various media!

I've completed a base coat on the arms after testing my new skill (joint shaving/sanding).

Though I've known about the merits of sanding joints to combat paint rub, I've always been too lazy to do it. Now that I know which Dremel bit to use, I will not skip this step again. In fact, I'm going back and redoing the joints on some of my completed figures.

I should have thought to mention it, Tamer. I always assume I'm late to the party and just discovering how to do things everyone else already does!

I used #84922 Silicon Carbide Grinding Stone on the joints (bottom right).

I used the tip (like a pencil) to grind down the hard plastic disk at the center and used the side of the tool to grind down the surrounding areas where they seemed to rub together. I only did a little at a time and then did a dry brush of paint on the joint to see where it still scraped and needed a little more paring down. It took about three tries to get the Rieekan arms to move with no paint rub. It was a challenge to shave off just enough at all of the contact points that they move freely without taking away so much as to loosen the joint or make it look awkward.

My latest custom debuted (via hologram) in my Instagram photo story, yesterday.

Here is a better look at him.

General Rieekan is comprised of three figures. The torso, head, hands, upper legs and boots (spats) all come from the original figure. The neck peg, knees/lower legs, ankles/feet are from Medical Frigate Luke and the arms are from a Hoth Han figure.

I'll replace the boots if I happen to end up with an extra set of Hoth shoes somewhere down the line. Other than that I'm somewhat pleased with him.

Can't wait to see what you do with your Ithorian, Bronxstalker!

I've always been fond of Hasbro's paint job on their last version of Momaw Nadon, so I'm trying to preserve the skin tones in so far as is possible by using a number of grey and tan washes to mask the new joints.

Re: Danz Borin--if anyone is interested in costume references on some of these old prop spacesuits,  this blog does a nice job tracking them through different movies.  If it's the same helmet, it's pretty altered by the time it hits "Laverne and Shirley ", but there are nice shots from "The Forbidden Planet" that are fairly convincing.  Suit was likely the same as the Duro space suit, with some footage in one of the Planet of the Apes movies.

Nice work AJ.  All those TACs deserve an upgrade like this. What figure did you cannabilize for the joints? Will you be ball jointing the shoulders?
Medical Frigate Luke elbows were used for the elbows and the shoulder joints were used for the knees. That's the only additional jointing I opted for on this one.

Nice!  I'm particularly impressed with your articulation on Rieken.  Looking forward to updates on Momaw Nadon.
Thanks, Jaeger45! I learned a lot working the joints into Rieekan which made all the difference approaching this. It was a bit of a bonus that the parts I used  were all leftovers from what went into making Rieekan. And thanks for posting the spacesuit blog. SO informative. I'm going to go back and update the paint apps on Danz Borin ASAP!

I was able to complete Momaw Nadon yesterday. Much of the skin tone is Hasbro's original paint work. I just blended my tans and greys in with it to hide the new elbows and knees. The clothing was completely repainted to match the added soft goods. I was smart enough to save the fabric I removed from Zuckuss when I replaced his skirt last year. I don't need all of  my cantina patrons to have super-articulation. I just want them to be able to sit.

Just for fun, here's a class photo of my updated patrons thus far.

Gosh, thanks Tamer! Rumors are circulating that we'll see a new one from Hasbro. If it does come it might not be any more articulated than the previous version.

Labria was not on my "to-do" list, but when I asked my friends on Facebook and Instagram he came out at the top of a short list of makeovers people wanted to see. This is another "do the best you can with what you've got" custom. He'll be comprised of parts that are already in the fodder box. I'm using the POTF2 Cantina Aliens 3 pack version for the torso and head, Jedi Luke arms and Bom Vimdin legs. I had to sculpt a new neck peg to ball joint the head (which will get a full repaint).

I always liked Hasbro's take on the costume (even though it's not accurate) so I kept that as the basis. The head was completely repainted. I hand sculpted a ball-joint neck on the original torso and used Luke Jedi arms and lower legs with Bom Vimdin upper legs. The wrist gauntlets are small pieces of a bendy straw. The cloak was left over from a spare Biggs (Tatooine) and the lower skirt was crafted from a black t-shirt. Big "THANKS" to my friends on Instagram who asked to see this character made-over.

As much as I liked the vintage soft goods on the vintage figure, it's just not the right look for this update. I found a spare piece of cotton microfiber material from some sheets I bought. Let's see what we can do with that...

Great job ! I actually happen to like the original soft goods on the update a little better then the newer version .  It gives it more of a worn color /look to it  imo !

Great work as always! I personally like the Boushh Leia, that was always one of my favorite figures and you made it the way Hasbro should have.

Your reworks on the last two figures turned out great and Tessek is looking like it is shaping up nicely too. I'm with Mr.Jedi1977, I like the vintage soft goods on Tessek.

Thanks for the share, Tamer and thanks for your comments everybody!

Since Tessek is going to take me a bit to finish off, I thought I'd share a little of my process on the upgrades I'm doing. I'm sort of approaching them like homework. I'm trying to complete them using materials I have on hand while focusing on a particular skill I hope to improve on each one.

With Hammerhead, I really tried to focus on hiding joints. Labria was face paint and Tessek will be improving my soft goods skills. I originally intended to use that vintage skirt but as I was looking at the reference two things stood out that I wanted to incorporate into the figure. The costume has a lot of volume in the skirt and the fabric is used as the lining of the cape. The lined cape is something Hasbro did with the last two Bespin Lando's and was something I wanted to try to incorporate.

I found enough fabric to construct a new skirt and cape lining. The previous photo was just a test fit. I'm now recoloring the fabric to match the figure. It may be hard to tell in this pic but what was stark white will be "antique" white which is closer to the color of the vintage piece and matches the limbs.

I'm also trying to match the aesthetics of the nouveau vintage styling so I took my inspiration from one of the more recent Leia figures and the Bib Fortuna I completed last year.

So even though I purchased that skirt years ago to incorporate into this custom, it just didn't fit with where Tessek is going now. Well, that's enough typing. I have a cape to build...  ;D

Nice work.
Impressive, most impressive.

Thanks Tamer and MsComicStar86!

Let me just say, Hasbro gets a lot of flack for bad soft goods (much of it deserved) but it is really easy for soft goods to go terribly wrong. Case in point, my first FAILED attempt at Tessek's cape.

I'm hoping to find a use for that fabric some day, but this ain't it.
Title: Re: Customjedi's Figures (Tawss Khaa, Boushh & WIP-Tessek)
Post by: customjedi on August 15, 2015, 05:47:21 PM
After several attempts at cape building, I was able to get my hands on some gray "deer suede" to complete Tessek.

The majority of time spent on this piece was getting the soft goods as right as I could. There are magnets embedded under the lining so the cape can be "locked" in an over the shoulder position to show the lining. Since the lined cape was a major part of the costume which I hadn't yet seen represented in any incarnation of the figure, I wanted to be able to highlight it.

The figure has its original head, hands and torso. Endor Han's arms and lower legs were used along with the 2006 Battle of Carkoon Han Solo crotch and thighs. The original figure's holster was transplanted onto the new legs.

Thanks, mr.Jedi1977! That lined cape stood out so much on that costume, I just had to try and do it justice. Plus, I hadn't done a cape of that kind before so I had to give it a shot.

Next up, I'm going back to droids... Specifically, WED-9, aka; Mos Eisley treadwell (or Bantha droid).

That's an interesting paint scheme. Too bad we both got it wrong. I have an excuse in that the reference photo for the front of the droid hadn't surfaced at the time I made mine.

I know vac metal is a hard paint look to achieve. I remember Hasbro telling us a c3po was delayed cause they couldn't get the vac metal look right. This product sure does look good. Does it come in different colors besides Chrome?

I was pleased with the way the chroming came out. Time will tell how it holds up. I used a brush on acrylic gloss finish to seal without too much loss to the shine.

Sadly, Molotow does make a gold but it is not well received. The results are quite matte, very similar to the finish you would get from an acrylic gold paint like I've used in the past.

Starting a new droid courtesy of Hole In the Ground.

Working on the inserted light source before I start the paint and add ons.

And finished ROTJ Emperor Palpatine with alternate Sith Lightening Attack head and hands.

The Emperor utlilizes the articulated body which was utilized in a few different multi-packs over the years along with the robe from the Phantom Menace Darth Sidious, the Target Exclusive Force Link Emperor head, hood, hands, cane, and lightening hands. The grimacing head was repainted to match the Force Link head's coloring.

My first fabric turned out not to be the best fit.  So I went with a faux deer-suede.

The color was too brown so a paint bath was utilized to grey it down.

And now, M'iiyoom Onith can sit in the Cantina!

I always love seeing the process folks go through to create. This is awesome. Glad it worked out. Thanks for sharing it.

Time to take it to the front pages.

Well this is the way on how to use soft goods :o You did a marvellous job on that figure, that's a big improvement! I like the detailed step by step guide by the way, that's really interesting to see.

Thanks for the excellent demonstration. The final product is really fantastic. I agree that its nice when a figure who sits can actually sit.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I completed anything.  Meesa back!

Been working on the security droid kit from Hole in the Ground off and on (mostly off) for two years.  I finally solved the issues I was having with it so I can call it done!

The dome was drilled out and a clear swizzle stick was used for the bulb.  It works in a similar fashion as the old light pipe feature on some of the 1990s figures like the Jawas or 8D8.  When lit from below, the sanded round ball illuminates.

I definitely need a better camera to capture the details in low light.

Love the light! The droid turned out great.

Thanks!

Next, a little work on Leia.  Hasbro has done a better job with the braids/bun on previous figures.  I transplanted the Saga Bespin Gown Leia braids onto the new Vintage Collection head.  It feels a little more substantial.

I don't know if I shared the little ball light that I used on the security droid, but here is the light source that sits in the magnetized treads:

I've been doing a little experimenting with foam insulation board. I extended the Lars Homestead playset by creating a cover that slips over the base. The texture was achieved with cornmeal mixed into acrylic paint.

I've added a few figures as well...

One of the last things I worked on with our dear friend, Stan was Aunt Beru (I contributed the soft goods for the figures we put together).

I also started experimenting with watercolor pencils (they were used for Luke's facial injury, not the YouTube backdrop).

and an R3 that I used the pencils to do some cleanup on my poor attempt at repainting. He cleaned up fairly well though.

Ponda Baba headswap:

Triple Zero  is a B.A.D. repaint that will eventually have swappable hands.

Zuckuss repaint and soft goods upgrade (re-did my old one and created soft goods for a commission)

and a not so simple Leia headswap...

trimmed softgoods, new head with sculpted earrings and hair from POTF2 Leia, new chain and collar and full costume repaint.

Thanks so much, Tamer! I’m definitely looking forward to more experiments with the watercolor pencils. Hoping to continue this trend of claiming customizing time.
