Title: Goldleaderone's World: Surviving one day at a time
Post by: Goldleaderone on April 05, 2014, 04:42:30 PM
Figured I'd start my own thread of things going on in my life, rather then being MIA only having to come back and explain why I've been gone haha.

In January a friend and I managed to get tickets to the Boston Red Sox home opener. Since 2001 or 2002 I've been to Fenway Park once a year. I try to go once a year, its like a tradition I have for myself. Going to a home opener of my favorite team has always been on my baseball to-do list, but to go to opening day to see your favorite team get their championship rings? I couldn't have been more stoked. The ceremony was awesome. In Left Field they have a 37-foot green wall, known as the Green Monster. They draped down 5 small championship banners, then a huge 2004 banner which covered the wall. Then another huge one from 2007, then finally one last big one, from 2013. The crowd went nuts on that one. Would have been better if they won lol. I recorded some of the ceremony with my camcorder. Here are some pics so you can see how awesome it was.

Pretty good point Jay. That would be cool to see an international baseball league. Looks like a fun home opener.

They have a World Baseball Classic, similar to the Olympics. They have teams from USA, Italy, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada and more. They have it every 4 years before the start of the baseball season, last time being 2013. So the next time will be 2017. The MLB players will play on teams representing their own countries. A few people I know don't really care for it, but I like it. It beats watching meaningless spring training games lol.

I've been informed I did not get the job at Triple A, however the recruiter emailed me with another job opening, this time for seasonal help. I accepted, so I have another interview this Thursday. Just trying to get my foot in the door and hopefully get full time eventually. Fingers crossed.

Day off from work I went to another baseball game with a friend, this time the Pawtucket Red Sox. It's the minor league affiliate of Boston, Triple A level to be exact. Triple A is the level before the majors. We were in the outfield seating, its a big grass area. One of the players on the other team hit a Home Run, everyone started running to where they thought it would land. The grass seating is on a slight incline, so running back is tough. My friend and I were also running for it, we lost the ball for a minute. I found the ball again, I jumped at the last second, caught it and fell down. Everyone was cheering after I caught it, it was such a cool experience. Even after it happened, people are coming up to me and high-fiving me saying good catch. After the game I decided to tweet the player who hit the Home Run, surprisingly he tweeted back.

Triple A just called, they offered me the job. I just gotta go through the usual drug test/background check and I'll be good. A 2 week training starts the week of May 5th. Its seasonal and will only last until August or September, so we'll see if I get called back or not.

Thanks. Just the 2 week training period as that is at night, and Sundays when I get the job. On Sundays I'll probably catch the tail end of a game, if its a 1:00 start.

When I actually start, both my jobs will be in the morning. I'll be working one job a day, no more going from job to job now. When I worked at the gym my schedule was morning job, break, then afternoon-evening job. I used to get home around 8:30.  Now, the latest I'll get home is around 5. It'll be good to be working 2 jobs again and actually be home in the evenings for once.

Went to another Red Sox game today, I finally ended my 4 game losing streak lol. Jonny Gomes, an outfielder, hit a Grand Slam. I think its the first time I've seen one in person. David Ortiz, their best hitter hit a Home Run as well as the backup catcher. Jon Lester, the starting pitcher struck out 15 batters, truly amazing to see in person how well he pitched today. They almost blew it in the ninth, but luckily held onto a 6-3 lead to win. As they scored the 3 runs in the ninth I'm sitting there thinking "You gotta be kidding me" lol. Here's a pic of my view today.

Finally I have finished training for AAA. I had 2 options for training, to do a Mon-Fri 9-5 or night classes Mon-Fri at 5-10:30.  I didn't want to waste my 2 vacation weeks just to go to training so I opted for the night classes. The only thing that stunk was coming home right from the night class and going to bed for work in the morning. I also didn't have a full day off for 2 weeks. I just finished my first official week there. It's a bit nerve-racking being on the phones taking call after call. I'm just nervous because I want to do a good job and eventually latch on permanently. I do love the people there, everyone says hi to you and is willing to help.

My schedule changed a little bit, I do have to work both jobs a few days, but at most its only 3. I'm also home by 5 which is a nice change.  Hopefully this is the last job I apply for lol.

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know I've survived the seasonal position at AAA and will be extended through November. Starting next week my hours will be bumped up from 15 to 25. Only downside is I won't have a full day off from either job. I'll be working Mon-Fri 2pm-7pm. I'll have weekends off but I'll still have my morning job, getting out by 11am and having the rest of the day.

Ah well. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Good to hear from you. A person has to pay the bills. It would be nice if one of your jobs would turn into full time and then you would be set.

Yeah that's the plan. Hopefully get AAA full time, maybe keep my job at the market part time. I'll have to see how I do financially if I get AAA full time. It sucks I've been at the market for 12 years and I'm only getting 16-20 hours a week.

Wow, yes it does. Have others that have worked their less time been given full time hours? I might have to go talk to the boss about that one, in as nice a way as I could. I guess its easy for me to say that not knowing the entire situation or work climate. Well good luck, I am pulling for you.

Thanks Tamer. A few people who have been there less time then me now have full time hours. My current boss I have no problems with, he's cool and doesn't bother anyone. I've let him know recently if any full time positions open to let me know, which he said he would. The problem is he's given so many hours a week to work with, a lot of times his boss will tell him to cut back on hours (our store isn't considered a 'busy' store). Another problem is full timers can get transferred at any time, including department heads and managers. Its just the company really, I just want out at this point. I got the job for the union and health benefits, now last year we lost the benefits.

I'd rather work full time at AAA at this point. It's a much more friendlier environment, pretty much everyone says hi to you in the hallways, and supervisors are willing to work with you to help you. It seems like at the market, some managers want to suspend you if you do one little thing wrong.

Just another small update.

We had a team meeting this past week, and on Thursday my supervisor had a one-on-one meeting with me (she was having one with everybody on her team). She showed me my recent stats and they vastly improved, on almost all the categories I got 100%.  When I started I was very nervous and shaky taking calls, having never done so before. I was able to get through calls with the right information, but was just timid in doing so. My supervisor said since then I've vastly improved and she was really happy for me (she even told me she likes me) and said she will try to get me on as a permanent position, and that I deserve it and would love to have me on.

Hopefully this leads to permanent part time, so I don't have to worry about going in and wondering "Are you letting me go today?" because I'm only seasonal right now. Hopefully get on part time, then continue on until I get full time.

It's funny how these things work. I was getting 16-20 hours at the market. I get the job at AAA getting 15 hours a week. Now when my hours get bumped up to 25, the past few weeks I've been getting 20 hours plus a Sunday (time & a half) at the market so total I'm working 45 hours a week.

The worst part of all this is my last day off was Tuesday from the market. My next day off is Friday. I'll be at the market 9 days in a row, which means 9 straight days of getting up at 6. Bleh.

Well I have good news and bad news. The bad news is this week is my last week of seasonal help at AAA. The good news is next week I start permanent part time! Last week was supposed to be my last week but they told me of numerous seasonal help positions. Two of which were permanent part time, and one of those fit perfectly with my schedule, which I applied for. My supervisor told me to apply, I did such a good job and wanted to have me back. I applied, but the Senior VP wasn't in at the end of the week, so they told me to come in this week for now. On Tuesday I found out I got the job. It was supposed to start the week of the 23rd, but they told me to just ride this week out, then come in next Wednesday, rather then leave a week then come back. My permanent position is Wed-Sat 12-5.

Once I heard the Senior VP had to ok it, I knew I was getting the job. My best friend works there. His uncle is the Senior VP. I've known him for years, he actually helped me get in, so I owe him. Another cool thing I found out, now that I'm permanent, I get a free AAA membership. Anyone who lives in the New England area and needs a membership or to renew give us a call. I'm still in the call center so you might need to keep calling until you get me lol.

Next step - permanent full time.

Started up our softball season tonight. Although we lost game 1, our team is pretty decent. We did face the best team in the league, so that wasn't fair to start off the season lol. Here's a look at our uniforms. My friend's fire department is sponsoring the team. We chose purple because we figured everyone was going to do red and blue. I was able to get my favorite number, 2.

Well unfortunately I am without a computer (and TV) for the time being. We had a storm this past week on Wednesday. I left for work at noon, came home at 6 and both were shot. Turns out the house next door was hit by lightning. We have a guy from Cox Communications coming out Monday to take a look at everything. The TV is shot but I'm trying to save my computer. Everyone has said try getting a new power supply unit, so hopefully that'll work.

Fingers crossed.

Well I'm back with a new PC and TV. I was thinking of getting a new PC anyway but it just sucks as to how it happened. I'm still working on fixing the old PC, trying to get my files back if anything. The TV I got is a 40" Sony Bravia Smart TV. My old TV was the same model but 32" but not a Smart TV.  I love it so far, no complaints.

Here's the PC I got.

What am I gonna do with 2 terabytes? lol.

My hard word and dedication paid off at AAA.  My supervisor told me a few full time positions opened and I applied right away.  I had an "interview" with my old supervisor.  Its on her team, she was my supervisor when I was a temp last year.  It really wasn't an interview, she just pulled me aside to tell me I got the job!  She wasn't supposed to tell me but she likes me and was really happy for me.  She wanted to let me know, this was my Christmas present.  They will be calling me Monday to officially offer me the job, and I have 2 weeks to let my other job know.  She said she can give me 3 weeks as well if needed, she says she can work with me cause I have 13 years with my other job.

My shift will be Sunday-Thursday 8:30-5.  My goal is to keep the market job, maybe 2 or at most 3 nights a week. I will not tell them I have Friday and Saturday off.  I will just go in, tell them I got full time and give them my availability.  I'm happy and nervous at the same time.  My stress level will most certainly be down, as I won't be there 6 days a week anymore.

I told my family at Christmas Eve dinner.  I stood up and announced I got full time and everyone was real happy. My uncle said even though we stopped exchanging gifts years ago, this was the best gift I could give my family.

Been a while since I posted in here. Nothing really drastic has changed, just a few things of note.

- Looking to get a new car soon. I was thinking of getting one towards the end of the year, that way the 2016 models would be cheaper. Then I realized I don't want to drive a brand new car in the winter, so I may wait until after. Looking to get another Toyota Corolla or even a Camry.

- Never thought I'd say this but I left my job at the market. My last day was August 11th, and it was bittersweet to leave. I was there 14 years, but I'm so glad to be out of there. I'm still working full time at AAA, just the 40 hours a week. We've been busier now because 2 other call centers have closed, so now we are taking on extra call volumes. It sucks but I just deal with it. I've waited a long time to get full time somewhere. My biggest thing though is how they treat us. They treat us there like adults, and that's always important with me. Supervisors are approachable. At the market it never seemed that way.

- I've been in talks about eventually moving out. Nothing is set in stone or anything, I haven't looked at any places or anything. Just been talking about doing so, basically the gears have just started to turn.

- Lastly, I started to thin out my Star Wars collection. I'm not getting out of collecting or anything, just looking to get rid of some stuff I don't have a need for anymore. I'm looking to part with my 3.75" figure collection. I'm not that deep with it so its a bit easier for me. I'm looking to focus on collecting the 6" figures, which appeal more to me. I get more enjoyment out of them, as seen from my instagram shots. However, I am still keeping my 3.75" pilot and Shadows of the Empire figures. I just hate the direction Hasbro is going with their figures. I was more of a vehicle guy anyway, and it'll be nice to focus on one line.

I've been looking at some condos the past few weeks. I looked at a third one tonight. I've been having my Dad, my Aunt and Uncle come with me to help me out. The one we looked at tonight, we all liked. We sat down and decided, tomorrow I'm going to call and make an offer, see if they accept. If not we negotiate and go from there. It's a real nice place, and about a 10 minute drive from my work place. I also checked my credit score and it is very good.

Fingers crossed!
