Title: Customs by the Sith's Herald - 7/18 update - Obsolete Power Droid
Post by: Siths Herald on December 10, 2013, 09:20:47 AM
Hi all,

I'm new to this page, but have been customizing for years.  I'm posting all of my better works in the weeks to come.  Hopefully I'll be done with posting the old stuff before I have my current WIPs complete.

Anyway, I'll start out slowly.  Nothing unique in this batch, but these were all completed before a retail version was available.  I like to call them the "I couldn't wait for Hasbro club."

Sith's Herald.... Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.... a long time  ;) Welcome at the Yards, man! I've known your work for years from the JD forums, where I'm still known as IncomT65  :)

Fellow Yarders, SH is a customizing veteran, with a wide variety of excellent customs. On top of that, he's a very talented artist at swagonline.com as well!

Thanks everyone for the comments!  I promised more, so I'll start out with my custom Sith.

Darth Rift - I put him together after I saw some of the very early images of Malgus.  He ended up being different enough that I keep them both on display.

Darth Caedus - at some point I hope to aquire an extra Jacen and use that head.

Darth Maleval's Light-Whip - I didn't care for the whip that came with this figure, so I built this one.  Unfirtunately, it makes for a pretty static display.

Darth Zannah
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/redfox75/Custom%20Figures/Sith/DarthZannahI_zpsde1ac8a9.jpg)

The next three are Sith Lords of my own design.

Darth Temptuous

Finally - Darth Omen.  I built him years ago.  When Hasbro started making some better Weequays, I rebuilt him.  Below are both versions.

Kinda figured you might have a few Sith. And very nice ones at that. Off to share. I liked seeing you post some artwork with each figure showing how closely you matched that up. I really enjoyed seeing your work with soft goods on these too. I think Hasbro really screws that up at times, but you show you it can really enhance a figure if done correctly.

Thanks for the kind words and the flattering post on the front page!

I have a bunch of new figures that have been coming together great.  I'm really pleased with some of the results (especially since some are commissions and gifts).  However... I have a few more posts of older pieces coming before I jump into the new ones.  I have some groups of Ewoks, Clones, Imperials, Rebels, Mandalorians and misc. characters coming up.  Hope you all enjoy them.

Hi again- I think Clones will be the order of the day today.  I've already shared the RCs and Rex.  Here are a few others Ive done.

First off is a complete Domino Squad.  The markings are as accurate as I couldmake them from the Clone Wars.

Before we saw Generation II ARC Troopers in the Clone Wars, this is my impression of what they would look like.

This is CC-1014 - Captain Regar.  I imagine him as 2nd in command to Commander Gree
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/redfox75/Custom%20Figures/Clones/DCP_3888_zps3e27edd5.jpg)

Before Hasbro brought us Hawkbat Battalion Clones, I made this one.  Once the Hawkbats became available, he became the squad leader on my shelf - CC12-0068 - Major Twelve

Thanks again everyone.

I didn't see a thread for tips and tricks, but I made an odd customizing chemistry discovery last night.  I was using the head from the pregnant nightgown Padme for another figure and I wanted to make it blonde.  I was having trouble getting yellow to cover the Hasbro brunette hair, so I decided to spray prime the head.  I wanted to keep the face paint intact, so I needed to mask it.  I had a piece of Super Sculpey handy with which I covered the face so i could spray the head.

I let the whole thing dry overnight and when went to remove the Super Sculpey, I found it ate into the Hasbro paint on the face and made the paint all rubbery.  It was almost like when you leave paint stripper sitting on an old piece of woodwork, but harder to remove.  I ended up scraping most of it off, and I have to repaint the face now.  My problem now is redoing the eyes.  Some of you guys do an amazing job on eyes.  I'm not quite there yet.  Maybe she'll end up being a Miraluka...  :)

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting and should be shared that Super Sculpey will eat into the stock paint on some figures.

Just catching up with your last 3 updates! Very nice work! I really love the astromechs and that R1 is a great design. The Ewoks are fabulous! Really nice parts added and the painting is some of your best to date. Way to wrap up the year with these great customs.

Darth Caedus - at some point I hope to acquire an extra Jacen and use that head.

Darth Maleval's Light-Whip - I didn't care for the whip that came with this figure, so I built this one.  Unfirtunately, it makes for a pretty static display.

Rather than buying another Jacen at $50 - $90, have you though about molding and casting your own?  There are a couple of good tutorials here on ISY about it.  There are also a couple of ISY contributers who sell casted heads on eBay too, but I cant remember ever seeing Jacen.

I have a solution to the static light whip.  It's not hard, but it's a little messy.   I'll try to post it soon.

BTW, love the Ewoks, especially the armored one.  Was that yor sketch?   You've also got a really nice coven of Sith going there.

Thanks for the feedback.  I haven't casted heads, but I have a good local friend who does.  That's a good suggestion.

My hesitation at using casted heads has been painting them, especially the eyes.  However, with some recent upgrades in tools and a couple links to tutorials Sithfire30 sent me, I think I'm ready to dive in.

Yes, that's my ewok sketch. I have doen drawings of may of my original character customs.  Either the drawing inspires the custom or vice-versa.

The fine facial details are a challenge.   Mr. Black does an outstanding job.  Examine his technique with a black molded GI Joe Duke head.

Great work on these figures!  I especially love the Kap Dendo and Kirtan Loor ones since I am a huge X-Wing Rogue Squadron fan.  I never really imagined Loor in red, but you definitely opened my eyes to it here.

Hi all.  Thanks for the comments!

Are there any recipes in particular you'd like to see?

For today's update, I'll post my Jedi.  I'll start out with the human Jedi

The first three are some older customs I will probably redo in the near future.  They are characters in a fan fic that I hope to someday write.

First is a character I created - an Old Republic Jedi Master named Jordan Farseer
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/redfox75/Custom%20Figures/Jedi/JediKnightGdordanFarseer_zps76738c0b.jpg)

This is Farseer's master, Jacoby Bardonna
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/redfox75/Custom%20Figures/Jedi/JediMasterJacobyBardonna_zps813e2735.jpg)

This is Farseer's training partner as a Padawan, Elani Wynflaire.  She later becomes Darth Temptuous.

This is Jedi Master Dooku, before he leaves the order.

Mara Jade Skywalker - Stealth X Pilot

Here are some alien Jedi

My final alien Jedi is a Chiss named Tranoj.  He's the hero in the fan fic story arc I hope to eventually write.  He's abandonded as a child on an uncharted planet just before ROTS, where he trained under the tuelage of Jordan Farseer's holocron.  He caries his master's broken saber hilt, hoping to one day gain the knowledge to repair it. He learns, from the species he lives with, to become a master swordsman.

I did an adult version of him years ago.

A few years back I made an updated version

And here is the younger version

I like em all, but that Chiss Jedi and Stealth X Mara Pilot are really my favorites of the update. I love the idea of doing some fan fiction based on some of those characters too. Off to share yet again.

If we are allowed to ask you to create I would love to see what you would do with a fully articulated AT-AT Driver; female, alien, or whatever. I am a bit biased when it comes to that character though.

Thanks so much!  The Chiss Jedi is kind of near and dear to me.  I'm glad you liked him.

I'll look into the AT-AT driver build.  At this point it depends on what fodder I have sitting around.

That facial work on the Chiss was very nice too. Figure that was hard to paint at that small scale.

If you need some Driver parts hit me up, I always have a few drivers sitting around. I mean it was my idea. ;D

Thanks again for comments and support!

I'm getting closer to the end of older figures.  Today's installment is basically background  and misc. characters.  I like to call them the Galactic citizens.

First is Caleb Stillette, a near human master thief from Coruscant.

This is Tat Argota, part of the Sector Mrshals, a branch of law enforcement once strong and useful before the Grand Army of the Republic was created.  Under the Empire, the group has been diminished.  This guys is one of the last Marshals, and one of the best.  I've made a couple versions of him over the years.

WOW! Just catching up here, tons of great customs! So cool that you draw some of these first and then make a figure. I really love the X-Wing Rogue Squadron figures and have made several of those as well. Nice work all around!

I'll see what I can do.  Some of the photos are older, and I know making them bigger would lose resolution.

Thanks again guys!!  I just returned from visiting the mouse in Florida with my wife.  It was a great trip, but we returned to a MN overnight low of -25°...

So, I'm back in my room where it's nice and warm, and I'm surrounded by Star Wars.  I'm eager to start posting some of my new pieces, so without further ado, here is the final installation of older customs.  Bring on the Mandalorians!!

I was really inspired by the way Traviss portrayed this culture in the Republic Commando series. I have a few of the main characters, and a bunch of my own.

Here is Kal Skirata

The rest are characters of my own design

Bave Radine follows the tradition of wearing a piece of armor from departed family members.  He's lost a lot of family.

Ter Jesso is extremely cocky - to the point that he painted his armor bright orange as a taunt to the enemy.

Many races and cultures built their droids in their image.  This is what happens when Mandos build a droid. M-ND0

You can see from the last two, i sometimes like to make pun names.  This one was mostly a Zartan figure.  His name is Nat Raz.

Edged weapons master Bolar Krent proudly wears a set of ancient armor he's restored.

On the other end of the scale, Braydon Hoole wears cutting edge advance Mando armor. I've since replaced the shin armor with something much better, but didn't have a photo handy.

MacDorn is a gentleman mercenary. I imagine a skilled Sean Connery-esqe character under the bucket.

These last two are some of my first Mando customs, utilizing old POTF Fetts, but they remain a couple of my favorites.

Mart Ironworth is a Mandalorian Warrior-Blacksmith.  His armor is a mixture of cast-iron and chrome.

Thanks again for the kind words.  I'll get some photos of the emblems on the Mandos poster here soon.

Now that I'm through my older pieces, here is my first new one.  He debuted a few days ago on Facebook.

This was part of a request from a good friend of mine.  He owns a Huskie.  He is very close to his dog and requested a Shistavanen Jedi Master that resembled him.

Thanks again guys!.

The next piece in the request I made for my friend was an apprentice for the Huskie Shistavanen Jedi.  He asked me to make him an Antarien Ranger / Padawan that resembles him.

This was a pretty simple kit bash of an Obi-Wan head, Snake-Eyes body and some misc. pieces.

This set is the final part of the request for my friend.  He asked for some troops to go with the Shistavanen Jedi and the Ranger/Padawan.  He requested earth tones and told me he is partial to the "beehive" helmet of the airborn troopers. I had two of those buckets, but I couldn't stop there and ended up making him a whole squad.

Not a ton of kit bashing in these, but the paint apps took a lot of time.  I think it was worth it.  I was really pleased with how these guys turned out.

Cool to see all those golden oldies, SH! Customizing has been a very quiet part of JD for a long time, despite the fact I got the admins to revamp the section. It's great to see you're still 'in the game' and that Husky Jedi is a great re-introduction to your work. Great squad to accompany (and later dispose of him?) as well!  :)

I would love to gove you a group shot, but I never actually had all of the figures in my possession at the same time.  I gave him the first two in Sept., and the troops in Dec.

Unfortunately he lives across the country so I have to wait until he moves home to see the group assembled now.  :)

BTW - Thanks again for the comments and the feedback!

Here's another new piece.  I gave this to a friend who is a big fan of Ithorians.

This guy was a kitbash of Roron Corobb and Umpass Stay.  I had to make the crevate/neckerchief to cover up the difference in the way the hammerhead mounted on the Stay torso, but it was all pretty much boil 'n pop and fit together pretty well.  This is the first figure I've use Lego parts on.  That knife is an elven halbird from the Lego Hobbit sets.

Thanks again guys!

Sprywalker recently posted some X-Wing Rogue Squadron customs, which prompted me to post these recent customs of mine next. This is Mirax Terrik, and her father Booster Terrik.  I don't think we ever see Booster in the comics, but he's pretty well described in the novels.

Mirax is an older figure that I recently updated.  Booster is new.

Mirax:
Head & arms - Juno Eclipse
Torso - comic pack Bultar Swan
Legs - Evolutions Luke Skywalker

Booster:
Head - Odin
Arms & torso - POTF Han Solo from the carbonite block
Legs - Either Capt. Antilles or Bail Organa - don't recall which.

Enjoy!!

Here's another recent piece.  He a mercenary or a pirate I guess.

The recipe was;
• Head - Kit Fisto - from the shirtless Clone Wars version.
• Torso - Wooof
• Upper Legs - Darth Vader
• Lower Legs - Carnor Jax

Thanks so much again guys!!  Mirax & the Nautolan were both fun.  I think the best part is after the kit bash, when the paint start to redefine the look of the figure.

Here are some more new Force users.

The Zabrak Jedi is a Padawan Obi-Wan body with a Clone Wars Darth Maul head.  I did the tatoos with pencil and dull coated over them, which was a first.

The femail Jedi is a Bultar Swan body, arms & upper legs, Arena Padme lower legs, and nightgown Padme head... This was the one I mentioned some weeks ago, where I tried to mask the face with Sculpey and it took all the paint off.  The head is a complete repaint.

I was actually pretty pleased with how the eyes turned out on both of these.

The Sith Lord was a repainted Zartan, with Mas Amedas shoulder armor, and a Vader cape.

I had never expected that a CW head could be used for a realistic custom figure but your Zabrak Jedi looks awesome. The CW Maul head fits perfectly on the Obi Wan body.

Hi all,

Thanks again for the comments!  Yeah - I was surprised too how well that Clone Wars Maul head turned out.  A little bit of a wash and some highlights and it would be hard to tell it was originally cartoon style.

Here are a few more recent pieces. We have an officer from the Imperial Security Bureau. Instead of the red uniform the Isards wore, I went with the white and black, as worn by Col. Yularen in the Death Star briefing room. We also have a Zeltron woman to fill in as a background character. Finally, a Chiss woman, to act as an aid for Aristocra Chaf'orm'bintrano.

So I ended up being a fan of the Coruscant Nights and The Last Jedi books.  Hasbro had already given us the protocol droid I-5YQ. This series of figures came about from some goofing around with spare parts.  Once one or two of them took shape, I was on a mission to create the rest of the group show here.

First is Jax Pavan.  I decided to make him a cross between the way he was portrayed on the covers of Coruscant Nights I: Jedi Twilight, and on The Last Jedi.

This is the Sullustan Den Dhur.  We met him as far back as the Medstar duology, as an embedded reporter in the Clone Wars.  Now he is involved in the fledgling resistance movement on Coruscant.

This is the Twi'lek Laranth Terek.  She is a Gray Paladin - a sect of the Jedi who become proficient with weapons other than Lightsabers. She suffered an injury to one of her lekku in one of the Coruscant Nights books.

Finally, this is the Cerean leader of the Whiplash resistance movement, Thi Xon Yimmon.

Thanks for the feedback!!  I figured I'd put another new one out here for 501st day.

This is a remake of my original character, Darth Temptuous.  I was never really happy with the original version.  When I head swapped the new Mara Jade, I looked at the head she came with (the one no one likes) and inspiration struck.  The hair was too big for Mara, but it seemed perfect, to me, for Temptuous.  In addition, I repainted the face and was thrilled with how much it gave a different look.

The body was a G.I.Joe Baroness with Scarlet boots.

Here's the old version of the figure

Thanks again for the kind words and feedback folks.  I haven't visited the site in a few months.  Summer gets so busy with other things.
I do have a new piece to share though.  I finished this in the spring and haven't gotten around to posting it here until now.

I have a friend who is a big fan of Gonk droids.  I had purchased this el cheapo jet fighter at Walmart with plan to make some kind of custom starfighter out of it.  It came with a generator.  I ended up goofing around with the generator instead of the jet, and build this aging Power Droid for my friend.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks!
