Title: Darth Crassus Customs
Post by: darthcrassus on July 24, 2013, 02:05:21 PM
Hi everybody, I just thought I'd post a few of my custom figures here. I particularly enjoy making major EU characters. I'll be adding more photos over the next few days. Enjoy!

Title: Starkiller

Put the TVC Starkiller head on top of the Dark Side Starkiller Apprentice from the Legacy 3-pack and voila! This is now my favorite version of Starkiller.

Title: Mythos Kenobi
Post by: darthcrassus on July 24, 2013, 02:14:51 PM
I can't afford Sideshow's Mythos Desert Nomad Obi-Wan Kenobi statue, so I made my own Hasbro version. Unlike the statue, this one has full articulation and the backpack, gaffi stick, rifle and rope are all removable

Title: Darth Tenebrous
Post by: darthcrassus on July 24, 2013, 02:37:39 PM
I love the Darth Plagueis novel. I had attempted to make a Darth Tenebrous custom back in November 2011, but then Star Wars Insider released an image of Tenebrous that contradicted mine. So, I decided to make my Tenebrous into Venamis, Tenebrous' apprentice. Meanwhile, I saw Stronox's Darth Tenebrous online and asked him to make me one. He kindly agreed and made a stellar Tenebrous. The Tenebrous pictured here is his creation, although now he is at home in my collection  :)

I'm actually surprised it came out so well. I had a plan for him, but I was worried the backpack might not sit well. I might post a recipe some day, but there are a lot of little parts and steps so it'd take a while to write out in full. One thing I found really worked well was using a small torch to crisp the edges of the cloak for burnt weathering. Sometimes I impress even myself  ::)

Title: Boba Fett Mythos
Post by: darthcrassus on August 01, 2013, 09:36:14 PM
As a companion piece to my Kenobi Mythos, here is my Boba Fett Mythos custom figure. I like the way it turned out, but technically I should have used an ROTJ Fett rather than ESB Fett. If I ever get a spare ROTJ Fett, I'll probably switch bodies. Anyways, it's close enough for now...

The official Sideshow Boba Fett Mythos statue as a reference:

Have you considered doing some weathering to it so that it matches the statue even more? Either way looks great.
Title: Updated Revan
Post by: darthcrassus on August 05, 2013, 08:09:03 AM
After I put articulated legs on Revan, I realized that they were kind of useless with the plastic skirt Hasbro used. So, I decided to embark upon a more ambitious Revan custom. To be honest, I was scared of ruining this figure. But, I also knew I wanted a cloth skirt and a bit more dirt on the red plastic. I also liked the idea of a black skirt, which I think is more accurate to the version we see in the game. Anyways, I'm actually quite surprised I didn't totally destroy this figure (although I did come close). Now, Revan is better proportioned, has articulated knees and ankles, more weathering, and a cloth skirt! Now, I need to get Malak into shape.

Rogue Jedi, yes, after I posted this photo I did a bit more weathering. I actually found the best technique is to use a small torch and scorch the figure a bit. I didn't want to go overboard though. I'll post some photos soon.

While I like the idea of 6'' figures, I think Hasbro really botched the paint on them. I tweaked the paint apps on most of the 4 figures from wave 1. The biggest change was Maul. Hasbro didn't even bother to completely paint his horns. I did. I used a light tan, which matched the color Hasbro used perfectly:

Maul (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/9466033353/)

I also bought an extra Sandtrooper and gave him a grey pauldron:

Hey Dom, finally got a chance to check out your work. Nice work on the Mythos Fett and Obi. I agree Fett could do with a bit more weathering. Obi looks great like that, though.

Really like the Zayne Carrick as well. Great choice of parts. Will you be adding more from that series of comics?

Yeah, I know. There are a few reasons. First, I have a certain fondness for the Hasbro Sandtroopers with grey pauldrons. Second, I think it's more visually interesting than white or black. Finally, if I decide to add weathering, I think it'd look better on grey. Black is too dark and white is too light. Of course, if I find any more of these figures in the stores, I'll do black and white.

Thanks. The last photo of Fett shows him with a bit more weathering. To be honest, at first I wasn't sure if I could bring myself to paint a TVC Fett, but I have 2 so I did it. In person, that final version actually looks pretty weathered so I don't want to add too much more. I'll try to post better photos one day.

I posted a few more KOTOR figures on my Facebook page, including Gryph. I don't think I've posted my Mandalore the Ultimate anywhere yet. I'm happy with him, but would like to give him a cloth cape one of these days and maybe a wash (although the plastic cape drapes nicely over his shoulders). As I've mentioned to you before, Satele Shan is on my to-do list as well.

Thanks. Only after I posted this did I realize the horns in the Maul photo are actually out of focus.  ^-^ I'll post another photo soon. I think anybody who gets that figure needs to repaint those horns. I used a Testors auto body paint kit light tan (got it for $7 off Amazon)

Crazy trick I learned for that TVC Fett antenna - if you burn the plastic for a fraction of a second, it will harden, making the antenna staff harder and not as rubbery. I did it by mistake, but good thing I did.

Post by: darthcrassus on October 08, 2013, 11:12:17 PM

One of the earliest comics in Star Wars and still one of my favorites. Mostly minor alterations to the three TotJ figures Hasbro has made so far...

I liked the Ulic Qel-Droma and Exar Kun figures, but was a bit disappointed that their scars weren't more visible.

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8128/10165016125_b8ea3aa8b4_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10165016125/)
IMG_1192 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10165016125/)

So I added a bit of red highlighting

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2825/10164898494_2776af009c_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10164898494/)
IMG_1187 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10164898494/)

I also added red highlighting to Exar Kun's facial scars

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3667/10165076926_492885dcd2_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10165076926/)
IMG_1198 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10165076926/)

As well as to the intricate Sith scar on his forehead

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3665/10165015955_d8405eda85_c.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/10165015955/)

One of my favorite characters from the Tales of the Jedi. Unfortunately, Hasbro will never make a figure of her because of a copyright dispute regarding her last name. I'll probably add some more weathering to her later.

Thanks. Apparently "Sunrider" is the name of a company and Lucasfilm was asked not to use the name. That's why in KOTOR the game designers created Bastila Shan - the character was originally going to be Vima Sunrider.

Post by: darthcrassus on December 15, 2013, 01:41:36 PM
I found a 6'' Sandtrooper for a great price on Amazon ($12.00), so I got another one and made a Sandtrooper Corporal. I basically just painted the pauldron black. I also painted the soles of the boots black to make it more screen accurate. I now just need one more so I can make a Sergeant (white pauldron).

Shae Vizla is one of my favorite figures, but the hair seemed too dull. In the videos, she has very shiny hair with gold streaks. I repainted her hair, with a subtle glossy yellow, wiped it down, then added black highlights. Looks much more realistic now!

How about molding?
I've done this a couple of times with other 3.75 helmets.  Make a mold of the Stormie helmet and pour in a couple of drops of 2 component resin, letting it coat the inside.  I mix in a drop of gloss white paint, which doesn't seem to affect the casting.  When cured, you pop it out, prime it, paint it, detail it and your done after a couple of hours of work.

BTW
SWEET!

Thanks for the comments! To be honest, getting the head to fit over Han's head isn't a huge priority for me. After all, a helmeted Stormtrooper Han looks like, well, a regular Stormtrooper, and I do have one of those. If I were to do it, I'd probably hollow out the helmet I have because I have it just sitting around. Maybe one day I'll borrow power tools from somebody and do it.

I mean to be honest, I agree with you, you may as well just swap out the Stormy Bucket at this point as it should look the same way right.

This is the first six inch Han Stormy I have seen and I really like it. Hope you do the same thing with the Luke coming out. And if they want the bucket just switch out the helmet. IMO, Hasbro should make more money by releasing these the way you just did and offering one more head (whichever the case may be). And to play Devil's advocate, how cool would it be to see a Cad Bane done this way with Clonetrooper armor?

Thanks! Yeah, it would be very smart for Hasbro to just make the heads of Han/Luke and the Stormtrooper interchangeable. Unfortunately, they're not, and based on the ToyFair responses to the Q&A, Hasbro doesn't really seem to get this. Basically, the Stormtrooper is just the Sandtrooper body, but no weathering. This means that the neck is a bit too high for the Stormtrooper (and it looks like the Stormtrooper has a long neck ). Also, you can't switch the neck pegs either because they're designed differently. My crude solution was to insert the Han neck peg ring into the Stormtrooper neck and paint it black. This did involve breaking the Stormtrooper's neck to remove the Stormtrooper peg, but if you do so carefully and paint over the crack it's not a big deal.

Some other customizers have dremmeled out the hole in Han's head, but I wanted to keep the head preserved in case I ever want to put it back on the Han body I have (I can always clean off the neck peg and reinsert it).

So, this actually turned out to be quite a bit more than a head swap! I won't be doing it for Luke unless I get another spare Stormtrooper body, and given the current prices on eBay that's not likely. The Luke X-Wing pilot figures seem pretty plentiful so I could pick up one of those for pretty cheap.

all you need now is a mock up of the detention level consoles for him to stand at... or shoot at.

This is great. And, admittingly it's one of the things I was considering doing when I finally got a hold of more of these 6" figures.  It's unfortunate that hasbro doesn't listen to us... swappable parts are what they think is so fantastic about their avengers assembler's figures and iron man figures... so why not make star wars figures swappable? AT LEAST THE HEADS!

ISY kindly asked a question I submitted to Hasbro about this during ToyFair. Hasbro's response was that head joint sizes depend on the needs of the figure. The Hasbro rep then said you can't make Han Solo and IG-88 heads the same size. I could barely restrain from posting a facepalm gif when I read that. Obviously not all heads can be the same size, but it'd seem feasible for humanoids to have the same size.

The recipe is:

- TVC Yoda waist and legs;
- VOTC Yoda robes and necklace
- starkiller belt accessory for "modesty cloth" in front;
- miscellaneous stuff for the staff and lightsaber (blade removable)

Nice, I like it. Off to share.

Kinda glad we have guys like you to keep the EU alive while Lucasfilm officially tells Hasbro not to produce any new EU figures.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, it's sad, there are so many iconic characters in the EU whom will probably now never be immortalized in plastic save in the private collections of customizers.

Thanks. I actually made that particular figure three years ago, one of my first customs (or at least the first I liked enough to actually display). But since then I've become a big fan of paint washes and realized I hadn't done any on that figure. I had also initially used a plastic cape rather than cloth, which I quickly fixed.
Title: Darth Traya
Post by: darthcrassus on March 28, 2014, 09:04:54 PM
Darth Traya from KOTOR II, one of the most complex characters in Star Wars. While Darth Vader represents “daddy issues” in Star Wars, Star Wars has not had many character that get at “mommy issues.” Darth Traya complex relationship with the Jedi Exile makes it unclear if she’s really a villain or just taking “tough love” to new extremes:

Here's my entry for the Kit-Bash contest. Darth Bandon, Darth Malak's Sith Apprentice from KOTOR.

(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5492/12186462794_f085de941c_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/12186462794/)
Darth Bandon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/12186462794/)

The recipe is:

TVC Starkiller torso, arms, legs, chest armor, belt
Darth Vader skirt
mid-length plastic skirt cut off Revan cloak
TVC bald Endor Rebel trooper head
Sidious lightsaber
No idea about those hands

Since this was a no-paint contest, I've entered him as is, but I might make a small touch up later to paint over the Imperial insignias on his arms (that's why I've raised his arms in this photo). Still, even after doing that, it'll be a pretty minimal amount of paint.

Actually, the opposite in some ways. I use a plastic skirt, a longer cloak, and make the figure taller. I experimented with soft goods skirts but they just didn't look convincing. If you've played the game, Nihilus actually tends to stand very erect and doesn't bend much, so I think the plastic look fits. Here's a preview:

I haven't decided yet if I actually like the robes that I chose, with the different textures in the front. I might change or cover that late.

Hasbro released a Dark Empire Leia during the POTF II line, but it needs an updated. I couldn’t find great matches for her legs and shirt, so it's still a glorified 5POA figure (well, 7 including new wrists and a new ball-jointed head). I at least wanted to give her a better face and head sculpt:

I barely recognize the Slave Leia head.  The Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Penelope Cruz figure might work for the legs.  At least it had hinged knees and elbows.

Well, it's actually half a Slave Leia head with the Dark Empire hair on top. Yeah, I'm really glad the face actually looks a bit older, less sexy, which works for the Dark Empire series.

I'll check that figure out. Leia's paints are really odd, almost with puffy legs. I'll probably have an easier time finding a replacement for her arms and torso, but nothing in the Star Wars line quite fits so far.

Nice!  I was just trying to figure out how to build the third member of Cade's crew....

Let me know if you have questions about the recipe. One problem I had is that the GI Joe shoulder joints aren't compatible with Star Wars figures (the joint head is too wide and short), so the shoulder joints on my figure work but they don't swivel easily. I post my figures so I don't mind, but you might think about alternatives.

Darth Tenebrous, Darth Plagueis’ master. The only reference image I’ve seen comes from the Star Wars Insider short story by Matthew Stover. I like that design, and this figure is clearly inspired by it, but I also wanted to try to put my own spin on him. For instance, I didn’t like the idea that his torso was entirely covered by armor. Also, shoulder pads just look awesome.

Title: Rebels customizing contest entry
Post by: darthcrassus on April 22, 2014, 07:28:02 PM
Here's my entry for the Rebels customizing contest. I have no idea what type of characters we'll see, but it looks like we'll get grittier characters, fewer Force users, etc. So, I've decided to create a mechanic. He's a Cerean mechanic, slightly elderly, used to work for a Separatist engineering unit until the war ended. He now just picks up odd jobs where he can.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3681/13206308425_5ea7df2937_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42971447@N05/13206308425/)

I've always liked the Cerean race. There's something that looks inherently wise in their faces. I decided to make this guy look like he didn't have a set uniform, something resembling mechanics overalls. I also gave him a do-rag to clean up all the grease he deals with.

Darth Nihilus, one of my favorite Sith Lords. Unfortunately, the Hasbro figure is too short and doesn’t capture the character. I used a plastic skirt, a longer cloak, and make the figure taller. I experimented with soft goods skirts but they just didn't look convincing. If you've played the game, Nihilus actually tends to stand very erect and doesn't bend much, so I think the plastic look fits.

Well, there aren’t any reference photos for Darth Venamis, Darth Tenebrous’ secret apprentice. I’ve made a few versions over the years, but never seem to make one that satisfies me. I like this one better than most. In the Darth Plagueis novel, he seems young and inept, but also unaware of that fact. I’d imagine he’d wear something fairly simply, like apprentice’s robes, but also a fancier cape to suit his ego.

It's still worth reading Plagueis even now, and the audiobook version is especially good (narrated by the butler from "The Nanny").

I really enjoyed the Plagueis novel and I really like your take on this character. The use of the Hasbro head keeps him in proportion and the slightly ostentatious accessories seems very in-line with the character we meet in the book.  Well done!

Post by: darthcrassus on May 09, 2014, 04:31:59 PM
This is my first custom figure based on Disney's new Canon Universe novels! Actually, it's just Luke based on the famous pre-ESB promotional shot, but it's also the same image of Luke as depicted on the cover of Kevin Hearne's "Heir to the Jedi." Basically just swapped the arms off Sandstorm Luke onto Yavin Luke.

I like the Luke. I've always liked that Ceremonial Luke, it just makes sense to do the promotional costume as well. The Black Series Luke could have easily come with an extra set of arms. Just like you demonstrated here, the mold to do so was already in the library. I might do one of these too.

Thanks! Funny thing is I just noticed those black lines around his crotch. I swear they don't look like that on the figure itself! I think the flash accentuated the cracks in the waist joint. I kind of wish i had had an extra TBS Yavin Luke torso, but that already went to my promo Luke figure above.
Title: Concept ROTS Anakin
Post by: darthcrassus on May 18, 2014, 02:09:03 PM
I love the Concept Anakin figure, but the head looked a bit “toyish.” I simply replaced the head and left hand with parts from the TVC Anakin Skywalker “Darth Vader” figure, which looks much more realistic. The pegs weren’t an exact match, so I had to swap pegs as well.

Thanks! I cut the neck and hand pegs off, then glued the neck of the TVC Anakin onto the Concept body and the Concept hand peg onto the TVC Anakin peg. So less a swap and more surgery...

Tamer
Darth Crassus' peg swap is the definitive way to go, but the quick fix for a too small peg is to squirt a dab of hot glue into the peg hole and squish the peg in before it cools.  You can clear the excess when it's all hard.

Thanks for the comments! Still can't remember what I did to detail that Bith head. I used some reds and blues and smudged them around.

I've used the hot glue trick before, but this Concept Anakin peg was WAY too small for the Vader head so it would have required quite a bit of glue. Figured it was easier just to do some reconstructive surgery.

Note to Hasbro: There's no reason the pegs for the same character should be such different sizes. We're not talking about IG-88 and Han Solo. It's the same character, you'd think his neck and head would be the same size!

I was the one who submitted that question. I thought Hasbro's answer was flippant and out of touch, as if they weren't even aware that customizers existed or didn't care. I mean, nobody is thinking about swapping IG-88 and Han Solo heads!

To me this was a question answered by a team rep who has no idea about how the figures go together.
Title: Concept Ki-Adi Mundi
Post by: darthcrassus on May 22, 2014, 12:34:07 PM
I love the concept art of Ki-Adi Mundi and Plo Koon for Revenge of the Sith. I actually would have preferred more battle weary Jedi to show the effect of the war. Hasbro did a great job with the sculpt of the concept Ki-Adi Mundi figure, but it lacks the weathering and paint job that really makes the concept art so striking. I just added some paint to the figure to give it that touch. And I gave him a purple lightsaber because the original Hasbro figure had a purple lightsaber (before we all knew only Samuel L. Jackson could get a purple lightsaber).

I love the concept art of Ki-Adi Mundi and Plo Koon for Revenge of the Sith. I actually would have preferred more battle weary Jedi to show the effect of the war. Hasbro did a great job with the concept Ki-Adi Mundi figure, but unfortunately never made a Plo Koon version. I used parts from that concept-Ki-Adi figure and the Legacy Plo Koon to create this guy. In the original concept photo, it’s unclear what color Plo Koon’s vest is. I decided on a bluish color, but

Here's Mission Vao, the kid sister of the KOTOR crew. It's a comic pack Mara Jade body, Clone Wars Aayla Secura arms and head. Since Mission is a kid, I went for a smaller look for her so she's actually much shorter than most other figures. I've posed her with Big Z, HK-47, Bastila Shan, and some of the other KOTOR crew.

6’’ Cantina Diorama

I bought a set of 3-D printed Cantina chairs and table from Hole in the Ground. They don’t come painted, so I painted the chairs and added some weathering. I love how they look with the 6’’ figures. If Hasbro makes some more Cantina aliens in this scale, I could easily see getting more of these sets.

Title: Darth Plagueis v. 1.5
Post by: darthcrassus on July 04, 2014, 08:16:16 PM
The Darth Plagueis figure is one of my favorites of 2013. Hasbro did a great job overall. However, earlier promotional photos showed the figure with blue veins on his head, whereas the final version has a clean head. I understand why Hasbro didn’t want the final one to have veins (because the damage only occurs after the assassination attempt on Plagueis) but I liked the look. This was just a simple repaint of the head, as well as adding a metallic sheen to the mask.

I liked the sculpt of my Darth Tenebrous, but decided to give it some more color. In particular, I painted the body armor and gave him purple belt fabric.

Sideshow’s new Sixth-Scale R2-D2 looks great, but I can’t afford it. I repainted one of the old Hasbro 12’’ R2s. I made it specifically for use with the Sideshow Yoda’s Hut diorama, so there’s quite a bit of brown.

We now know that Mark Hamil has been cast for Episode VII. I think it’s safe to assume he’ll still be a Jedi. I decided to repaint the New Jedi Order Luke to create a more realistic version of Sequel era Jedi garb. The NJO version had gaudy red vestments, which just didn’t seem very Jedi-like.

Title: Jahan Cross
Post by: darthcrassus on July 31, 2014, 05:53:35 PM
Jahan Cross, the Imperial Agent from the Agent of the Empire comics. This is easily one of the quickest and easiest customs I’ve made, but I think it works. Ironically, in the first few issues, Cross wore the same outfit as Han in Bespin. The Rebel Fleet Trooper head is a pretty good match. Cross’ hair in the comics looks whiter, but I think light grey looks better. White hair almost looks a bit too comical.

I have good news and bad. I'm going overseas for an exciting new job opportunity. It's a dream job so I'm very excited. Unfortunately, it pretty much means that I won't be able to do any customizing over the next year or so. I'm going to miss the hobby as well as all the friends I've made through customizing forums. I very much hope to resume when I return to the U.S. In the meantime, here are some photos of my collection (although most of my collection is already in storage). Enjoy:

Title: TFA 6'' Kylo Ren lightsaber crossguard
Post by: darthcrassus on September 12, 2015, 02:34:10 PM
I wasn't a huge fan of the funky red electricity on the cross guard of Kylo Ren's lightsaber (TFA 6'') so I decided to modify it. I basically cut the extra lightsaber plastic off, then glued the remaining pieces into the hilt. Because the lightsaber blade plastic is translucent, cutting it can lead to chaffing and white scarring, so try to cut as little as necessary.

Possibly, but the beauty of this custom is that it's entirely reversible. If Hasbro makes one, I can just swap the heads back on and have 1 extra Stormtrooper and 1 extra Finn. And if Hasbro doesn't make this figure, then I've got a unique item.

Title: Bandai 6'' scale R2-D2
Post by: darthcrassus on September 16, 2015, 11:53:51 AM
I made an R2-D2 from a Bandai model kit. Before building, I sprayed the dome with chrome paint before painting to give it a nice sheen. I then added some weathering in line from what we've seen of R2 from the Episode VII promo photos. It was an easy build.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5814/21284321978_c90344b942_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/yqPHoA) (https://flic.kr/p/yqPHoA)

The model is as articulated as a TBS action figure, so you can put him in different poses. Best of all, it's perfectly in scale with the 6'' action figures, making it a great replacement for the underwhelming TBS 6'' R2 Hasbro made.

Great job on R2! The painted dome is much better than the plastic. That was the only complaint I had with the Bandai R2, but they would have had to use chrome plating and that wouldn't have worked. But this works I'll have to keep it in mind.

There's really infinite potential with this kit for astromech lovers. I've already ordered another one and want to build another R2 for dioramas and displays. I might make an R5-A2 or A7 with the extra R5 body. I'm tempted to order even more kits so I can make more R2-D2, or even other R2 units.

Bandai's R2-D2 model also comes with an R5-D4 droid. As with that model, this one is easy to put together and fully articulated! With Tatooine Luke coming out next year, now Hasbro just needs to make a Jawa figure so I can make a small droid sale diorama.

Title: 6'' C-3PO Bandai Model custom
Post by: darthcrassus on September 22, 2015, 06:33:44 PM
Because I liked the R2-D2 model kit so much, I got the C-3PO Bandai model kit. As with R2, this figure is perfectly in scale with the Hasbro Black Series 6'' figures. As Hasbro hasn't even released any version of 3PO in this scale yet, this model fills a big hole in my collection.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5795/21550917885_c1a73537ba_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/yQo64K) (https://flic.kr/p/yQo64K)

The model is fairly well articulated - well, about as well as 3PO is ever articulated. It comes with two sets of arms, articulated and non-articulated. I repainted one of the left arms red to match his appearance in The Force Awakens. He also comes with an alternate head (one without a dent) and a chest plate with a restraining bolt.

The model was a bit more difficult to put together and sometimes the gold finish got a bit chipped as I cut pieces from the plastic rack, but overall I love how he looks.

[note: C-3PO looks slightly taller because he is standing on a black base]

Post by: darthcrassus on October 11, 2015, 08:15:22 AM
I added some weathering to my 6'' Rey figure. In all the reference photos I've seen, her garments are quite soiled.

Nice job on Rey.
Big H had better watch out with the six inch scale.
Between price and distribution, seeing your customs may the final push serious collectors need to switch to Bandai.

Title: 6'' Boushh Leia wash
Post by: darthcrassus on October 16, 2015, 12:05:16 PM
I added a bit of weathering to the Leia in Boussh outfit 6'' figure. I used a black detail wash. It's a light effect, but it helps bring some of the detail out and dirty up the outfit (the figure comes with no weathering).

Title: Review: Revell TFA Millennium Falcon
Post by: darthcrassus on November 08, 2015, 04:17:33 PM
I've been getting back into model making recently. I built Bandai's excellent 6'' R2-D2 and C-3PO, but I hadn't gotten any ships from The Force Awakens yet. Unfortunately, Bandai's ship models are difficult to get in the U.S. due to a licensing dispute with Disney, so I decided to try Revell's out offerings. I was particularly excited for the Episode VII Millennium Falcon as the Falcon has always been my favorite ship.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5780/22463806208_9013579664_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ae3SXA)

First of all, this is only a model in a very loose sense. The pieces aren't attached to a rack so there's no cutting required. All the pieces snap together very easily. In fact, the entire construction took less than 10 minutes. So I wouldn't really recommend this for anybody who wants an involved build. In terms of difficulty, it's probably suited more to younger kids.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5794/22893298321_6e7cb35abe_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/AT1912)

That said, the final product is a really nice version of the Millennium Falcon. The ship is over 8 inches long (I believe it's the largest version of the Episode VII Falcon on the market so far). The ship is very detailed. I don't have good photo references of the Falcon from the new movie, but it looks pretty accurate. The guns aren't posable, which is a shame  (but the turret does rotate). However, I'd rather a gun turret that looks too accurate than one that's articulated but too big. Best of all - and this was a surprise to me - the ship comes with lights and sounds!

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5704/22868667732_855e4d8c17_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/AQPUbG)

The model comes partially prepainted, at least the major features like the red and gray panels and the cockpit windows. But it doesn't have any weathering or scoring. I decided to add a black wash, which I think brings out the detail and gives it a "used" look, which is appropriate to the Falcon. Part of me thinks Revell should have included a bit more weathering in the basic paint job, but I understand that it probably needed to keep down costs (and the retail price for this model is very reasonable). Besides, it's easy enough to do yourself (this is after all a model!) and highly recommend doing so.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/720/22463806928_3a10db44c8_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ae3Tb1)

Another (tiny) complaint is that the model doesn't include a stand. It does have landing gear, which works well enough, but a stand would still have been nice to so we could display the ship in mid-flight.

If you're looking for a movie-accurate model/toy of the Falcon, this is a good choice. It's certainly great value for your money. I remember getting the Action Fleet version of the Original Trilogy Falcon during the 1990s. It cost about $10-15, wasn't as accurate, and didn't have lights and sounds. So $20 for this kit is a bargain.

If you collect Hasbro's Titanium Series, this ship is in scale with the X-Wings and TIE Fighters

Title: Review: Revell TFA Poe Dameron's X-Wing
Post by: darthcrassus on November 12, 2015, 06:27:02 PM
I've been getting back into model making recently. I built Bandai's excellent 6'' R2-D2 and C-3PO, but I hadn't gotten any ships from The Force Awakens yet. Unfortunately, Bandai's ship models are difficult to get in the U.S. due to a licensing dispute with Disney, so I decided to try Revell's out offerings. Poe Dameron’s X-Wing isn’t my favorite ship, but it seems like it’ll be one of the main ships in the new movie, so I decided to try it out.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5691/22856167856_293f1b606d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/APHQpA)

In terms of difficulty, it's probably suited more to younger kids.

That said, the final product is a really nice version of Poe Dameron’s X-Wing. The ship is over 8 inches long. It’s not as large as Hasbro’s X-Wing, but this model uses nice, hard plastic (these laser cannons won’t bend) The ship itself is very detailed. The wings expand so the ship can go into attack formation and the cockpit opens. The interior is quite detailed, but sadly there’s no figure. Best of all - and this was a surprise to me - the ship comes with pretty good sound effects!

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5698/22694133610_0f98260dfb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/AzpngG)

The model comes partially prepainted, at least the major features like the orange stripes and the cockpit hatch. It doesn’t have any weathering or scoring, but I decided this ship looked better clean (I added a tiny bit of weathering inside the engine intakes).

The ship unfortunately isn’t entirely accurate to the film because the tips of the laser cannons are sideways. Although I’m disappointed, I honestly can’t say it takes away too much from the model. I wouldn’t even have noticed if another reviewer on Amazon hadn’t pointed it out. Truth be told, I actually prefer the laser cannons sideways. I realize this is reason enough for some people not to get the model, so hopefully Revell fixes this in the near future.

Well it's not 3.75'' scale so it's not quite the same. This one is 8.5'' so it's not small, but obviously not meant to hold a figure. There is a larger Revell model available (I built the Level 1 version, but there's Level 2). I definitely think these are better than the Disney Elite die cast ships, which have rubbery laser cannons. These are made of hard plastic and feel very sturdy, so no warping cannons.

Unfortunately, Bandai's ship models are difficult to get in the U.S. due to a licensing dispute with Disney, so I decided to try Revell's out offerings. The model comes partially prepainted, at least the major features like the white wing panels and red marking, so no need to worry about paint. Best of all - and this was a surprise to me - the ship comes with pretty good light and sound effects! The cockpit lights up red and it has shooting and flying sound effects.

I decided to add a black wash, which I think brings out the detail and gives it a "used" look. I’m very happy with the way it turned out. I might add some more carbon scoring and streak marks like I’ve seen in the promotional photos, but I haven’t decided yet.

Title: Review: 6'' Incendiary Stormtrooper custom by shoeboxtreasures
Post by: darthcrassus on November 28, 2015, 08:07:47 PM
While most of the collecting world was obsessing over the Battlefront Shock Trooper last week, I discovered a custom Incendiary Stormtrooper on eBay. I haven't bought too many customs from other customizers, but this one really spoke to me.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/735/23275800932_d300059830_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BsNyGC)

The custom was made by shoeboxtreasures, whom I haven't heard of before, but this is a really nice quality figure. The paint design kind of resembles the Shock Trooper, but the patterns are a darker red and the figure has more wear. I especially like how it looks like the damage has come from fire, with occasional burn marks and ash.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/764/23384207715_f78b1bc524_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BCobg6)

Perhaps the best part of the figure is the weapon. Unlike Hasbro with the Shock Trooper, shoeboxtreasures took the time to give the figure a cool new looking weapon, as well as a plastic flame effect. If I were to be picky, it doesn't quite look like a flamethrower because there's no fuel tank, but who knows how flamethrowers in Star Wars work.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5643/23275799942_bf3107e9ee_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BsNypy)

Overall, I'm quite happy with this figure. A flamethrower trooper is such an intuitive idea that we're getting one in The Force Awakens (and having seen this figure I wish it had similar armor decoration). In fact, it looks like it fits better in the Original Trilogy era than the Shock Trooper. It also helps that shoeboxtreasures sold the figure at a very reasonable price.

I've always been a big fan of the Hawkbat Battalion Clone Troopers from the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars show.

I decided to make a custom version. I just used a Tamiya weathering kit to add some sand and dirt to the legs, then a poncho from an eBay seller. Quick and simple!

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5646/23088435950_424885213c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/BbfgBU)

I decided to go with a lighter shade of brown than what we saw in the cartoon, partly because the characters in the show look like they're in the shade.

Wouldn't it be cool to see a six inch version (or a 3.75" would be even better) version in this style again! Like the soft goods too. Was this rickhor409 for the soft goods? Nice! The black neck makes so much more sense and really looks good.

Oh yeah, looks good. I just wish I had stores that were getting these waves in!

I was lucky and found Wave 4 once a few weeks ago. Now I'm trying to find Wave 5!
