Title: 2013 Joint Site Episode VII Customizing Challenge
Post by: Tamer on February 13, 2013, 03:09:32 AM
UPDATED WITH ALL THE DETAILS - 02.14.13!

As a follow up to a joint customizing contest held last year in the memory of the late Mercury Art Studios, the following sites are working together to bring another joint customizing event:

http://www.imperialshipyards.net
http://www.yakface.com

There is a Star Wars:  Episode VII theme - In order to participate, please adhere to the following rules:

Rule #1 - In order to be eligible, all entries much have some sort of "Episode VII" theme (which is up to you!), with at least one new custom figure entered into the contest that were made solely for this event.  They must be posted in the dedicated thread in the forums at either of the above mentioned website forums before the deadline, which is 11:59 PM Central Standard Time, Saturday March 30, 2013. Here is the address for the thread at Yakface you can post your entry:

http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7121

Rule #2- You can make as many custom figures as you want - but regardless of how many you create, they constitute as one entry.  However, if you post your figure(s) at both sites, then you will be entered in twice for the random prize pool.  So it is in your benefit to post your entry into the dedicated thread at both sites.

Rule #3 - After the end of this event, ONE GRAND PRIZE winner will be selected by a panel of judges at the Star Wars fan sites sponsoring this event.  We will be as absolutely fair and unbiased as possible with this.  The winning prize will be announced at the end of the contest.  This item will be sent free of charge to winners within the United States .  If the winner is international, shipping fees will apply.  This GRAND PRIZE winner will get to choose their choice from the prize pool.

Rule #4 - There will be TWO RANDOM RUNNER UPS, which will be completely RANDOM winners.  The first random winner will select which of the remaining prizes they want, which will be packaged and mailed free of charge in the United States.  The second random winner will get the remaining prize and same shipping rules apply.  However, if any random winners are international, shipping fees will apply.

Rule #5 - Staff members at any of the sponsoring sites can participate, but are not eligible to win a prize at any time.

Rule #6 - Even though there will be a grand prize winner selected for the customizer who "wows" the judges the most, the two random winners will be selected regardless of talent level - no custom is too good for this, and no custom is too bad.

Rule #7 - Have fun with it and enjoy seeing everyone's work and ideas!

The prize pool is as follows:

This includes a Sideshow Boba Fett, a Sideshow Aireborne Trooper, and a Gentle Giant General Veers Mini Bust.

The winners we be announced on (or around) Monday, April 8.  The Grand Prize Winner will be announced at each site, and the Random Winners will be announced at each site as well.

Once the grand prize winner is announced, the winner should post in the thread at either site (or both sites) which prize they want.  Then the first random winner will do the same and announce which prize they want.  The last random winner will receive the remaining prize.

Please feel free to ask any questions in this thread, and we look forward to seeing the custom figures submitted for this.

You should post your customs in this thread - and the companion thread at ISY is HERE (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8360.new#new).

Thank you and may the Force be with you!

That they do and the forum thread that is in the original contest details for Yakface. Think Chewie put up a link here too.

Oh, did I tell everyone that I recieved word back from our contest sponsor Sideshow that they are gonna donate a prize for this for our ISY end too? I am telling you Sideshow is one fine company when it comes to donating prizes for this.  And yes I am still gonna let the GG Veers go to in the spirit of things.

Remember folks, there will be a grand prize (sorted by a panel of judges from Yak and ISY) and the other two prizes will be for random entries so anyone has a chance to win. Don't forget if you post said entries both in this thread and the one at Yakface you will get a double entry into said raffle.

Luke Skywalker -  Jedi Grand Master

Han Solo - Admiral of the Republic

Shae Skywalker - Smuggler's fatigues

In the fan treatment I'm writing Shae Skywalker is Luke's great great granddaughter, a cocky rebellious young woman - strong in the force, but with no patience! The announcement of the new sequels has got me so excited - I can't wait!!!!!

WB Out!!

I can't wait to post something.  Hopefully, I'll make the deadline.  I've got somethings in the making that I've had left undone.  This is a great idea.  Is there a spot here in the Yards where people are posting what their ideas are for the upcoming sequels?  The movies themselves, that is.  I'm anticipating the original cast could be grand parents (if they make appearances at all).  What novel(s) do they follow, if they follow any?  Or will Disney do their own thing, hopefully keeping to what we know through novels, comics, and other media?

Alright, going to have to give this contest a shot!  As many of us are, I'm very excited that more SW films are headed our way and continuing the Skywalker/Solo saga was a great place to start, IMO.

I'm going to love seeing the old gang back in action (hopefully), with some new blood and supporting characters mixed in.  With that said, I'm actually interested in potential Jedi characters that might have been identified by Luke since ROTJ.  In my mind, there wouldn't be a large Jedi Order, just a few, trusted individuals who likely wouldn't pose as much of a risk to falling to the dark side.  I would think that Luke might be somewhat fearful of training a potential dark side user and would very carefully select those who could help to re-establish a new type of Jedi Order---but with limited risk involved.

With this idea swirling around in my head, I created a new Jedi: someone who might serve with Luke in an advisory position (or who is stationed in a part of the galaxy where this new "Master" oversees a sector where he (and a few other Jedi) try to keep the peace.  I've always been bored by the dull "tan robes" look on all Jedi and saw them dressed more in utility suits, military gear, and/or clothing useful to the places they were stationed.  I also like the idea that this guy doesn't use a lightsaber: instead, I'd like to think of him as having mastered a modified double-bladed vibro-blade that carries an electric charge and can rebel most lightsaber strikes.  He's also dressed the way I'd envision him on a planet like Tatooine, Saluecami, or other desert-like world.  I purchased some Aves Fixit a few months back and have been slowly working on simple sculpting (belts, harnesses, etc.) and decided to practice on this character:

Merc,

I love you thinking on this one; especially the idea about the weapon other than a lightsaber which I know is probably not gonna be well recieved with some fans. I think we all love lightsabers, but seeing some other type of weapon light up too besides a straight sword I think would be cool.

I also hope perhaps we can get a little clearer image before this is over? And remember if you use a photo hosting website all you need do is paste your image directly into your message post and the forum will auto resize it for you.

Thanks Tamer!  I'm not much of a photographer, so I didn't even consider using a hosting site for images.  Took care of that this afternoon and got the updated---and much better photos---into my original post (see below).

I really like this new Jedi look you have created here. I enjoyed the black uniform look of Luke in rotj and thought it silly that Lucas embraced obi wan's desert robes as what the entire Jedi order should wear, along with the celibacy thing, of course.

Keep on going with this one, the sculpted straps look great.

Also folks, please do not forget when you submit your final pics here you also want to go here:

to also submit your entry as there are going to be two random prize winners in addition to the grand prize winner. These random prize winners will just have their names put into a hat and one will be drawn. If you enter at both places you will get your name entered twice.

We figured since we are judging our own contest and we can't submit entries that Customs for the Kid should definitely support others in the community by participating in our friend's event in the meantime.

Here are the entries we threw together.  Just background characters. Although, if there is one thing that can be said about Star Wars, it is that the background characters even have great tales told about them along the way.  Here are our characters, but their stories are still a work in progress.  Hopefully we'll have them done by the end of the contest.

Here's my entry.

Episode VII
A New Threat
While the New Republic is at peace in the ruins of a Yavin temple awakens a new threat. Ancient Sith Lord Morda Kai has awakened and is drawing the Imperial Remnant, Black Sun and various other evil doers to his banner. While training a New Jedi Order Luke Skywalker has no idea of the trials to come.....

I've always liked the idea of the Sith species making a come back so this is what I've tried to do. If I get chance I'll include his apprentice but I don't think I've got time.

Head - PoC Zartan with greenstuff tentacles.
Body - Cobra Commander.
Arms - Resolute Cobra Commander.
Legs - PoC Firefly.
Lightsaber - PoC Storm Shadow weapon with Imperial Knight blade painted.
Sword - RoC Zartan.
Cloak - Fodder box ????.

Cool looking Sith Lord!

Also I'm not eligible for this but I could not resist making some customs for this too.

Han Solo - The crafty pilot of the Millennium Falcon... back for one more round of action against the Empire.

head - Indiana Jones figure
torso - TVC Colonel Cracken
legs - TVC Bespin Han Solo

Falcon Gonk Droid - The Falcon is getting older, and one thing Han knows is that a power backup is always a good idea.  So he keeps this trusty droid around and has for years now.

body - TVC Target Gonk
eye - IG-88 shoulder

Imperial Space Trooper - During a trip to Coruscant in Episode VII, Han Solo's ship is ambushed by an Imperial cargo ship, which after disabling the Falcon, deploys a group of Imperial Spacetroopers to board Han's ship.

body - Legacy Spacetrooper

Imperial BARC Trooper - Han is forced to land on the remote world of Dathomir, and the Imperial Remnant swiftly sends a team of troopers to find  him... including a group of Imperial BARC Troopers.

body - Legends Scout Trooper
head - Clone Wars BARC Trooper

And for fun, a pic of Han with the Gonk and his loyal sidekick, Chewbacca.

Very nice work so far guys, I just finished some customs, or themes I'd love to see in the new movies. First up is my redeemed Stormtrooper. I figure someone in the imperial army had to have some connection to the force, and Luke taught him the ways of the Force.

And a Chiss Sith warrior. He is more of an intimidating and mysterious Sith who is more reserved, but is not afraid to use his crushing powers when needed. I imagine he's competing to become top Sith with the power vacuum left after Sidious' death.

Alrighty!  Finally able to finish up my entry for this contest!  I previously posted this guy as a WIP, but he's all painted up and complete now.

I went with a weapon other than a lightsaber just because I think it would be more realistic that not every jedi in the upcoming ST would have one (i.e. maybe the Empire had confiscated Ilum's supplies, destroyed all natural crystals...or something like that ;)).

Here's Harn Vandeth, Jedi Master (NJO):

Nice! I like the colors on this guy, looks very original. The double blade looks very nice too, the electricity is a nice touch. My favorite part about this guy has to be the neck/face armor thing, it all comes together very well.

Thanks for the comments; I'm actually shocked that my wife gave me a couple hours to tune him up and photograph him before the contest ended!  I'm just hoping that we see some of the same technological limitations in the ST that made the OT so entertaining.  The fact that light sabers were outlawed and likely in short supply, coupled with my own view that the Empire would have targeted a place like Ilum (light saber crystal "supply base"), would mean that post-ROTJ Jedi would need to seek alternate weaponry.

I gotta say all of these customs are great! OUTSTANDING work from all.

Merc your Jedi is wonderful and Wookie Balls I liked your Luke but your Han is out of the park!

I am desperately working day and night on an entry. I only started it this past Sunday due to time constraints at the beginning of this month. I didn't want to compete with you guys on a Han or Luke character so I'm going for a villain. This villain is in the paint stage. I hope to be posting something either tonight or tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Hi to all :)
I'm not sure if I need to introduce myself in another thread, so please excuse me that I do it here. I'm from Bulgaria, Europe and I've been customizing for quite some time, but mainly "improving" my figures, it's too expensive to buy multiples for customizing here. This is my first participation in this kind of contest :) I wanted to register in Yakface, too - I've been a regular visitor there for a few years, but for some reason my registration fails every time. If someone from their site sees this and helps me, I'll be grateful. Anyway, here are my customs:

Neru Keel. I imagined him as a clone who was exposed to some kind of radiation and developed midichlorians. His lifespan and his vision about the Galaxy got bigger :) So in Ep 7 he should be one of the followers of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, a veteran and survivor of the Clone wars and the Jedi Purge.
 Recipe:
Head - Saga 2 Clonetrooper, hair and beard sculpted with Aves FIXIT.
 Rest- ROTS Obi-Wan, resculpted bootstraps.
 Lightsaber - scratchbuild.

Ok. Here is our entry for the contest. We wanted a character that would have a plausable bridge between Episode VI and VII. After researching the Sand People and watching ROTJ again, we finally came up a figure. We even created his own card, backstory, and gave him a recon droid. Even with all the new gadgets, we felt he should still be true to his heritage and own his gaffi stick. Because of his time with Boba Fett, we felt Boba would have given him some of his older items in his closet: wrist rocket, worn cape, shoulder/knee pads, and color scheme. This merc is slowly evolving...

Scratch-built crossbow using the big gun that comes with the Wookie Warrior.

Justin I think you are correct. Isn't it great! Talk about some wonderful work folks.

Bubba Fett I am just blown away with your carded glory to go along with your custoum figure and diorama. Just awesome work from all angles.

And Evilivo welcome to ISY and I really like your entries as well. I so agree we should get some type of cure for a few of the Clones and get them into some force sensitive roles. I know one gal who will go crazy over that Wookie you created too.

Wow!  I mean...just wow!

Evillvo: that wookiee looks like it could be on the pegs right now.  Excellent sculpting; it blends in so well you can't even tell it was an addition.  Congrats on a great fig and welcome to the yards!

Bubo: great concept!  The Tuskens are an often overlooked species with such great potential.  Potential now realized in your Tusken merc!  This is really a nice-looking piece, from the Vimdin body right down the Fett gadgets.  The custom card is a huge bonus: I've seen that Tusken image on DeviantArt; great choice for the card art.  Congrats on an awesome entry.

Warsaw:  that is not only a perfectly designed and painted figure, but the backstory is pure genius.  I can see the Cloud City/Lando influence  just in the color choices.  Phenomenal work!

WB:  I've been waiting to see how the final two figs in your EpVII "trilogy" would come along...boy, you sure don't disappoint!  I love the outfit design for Shae, but the Admiral Han Solo is, in my opinion, one of the finest figs you've put together (and you've done quite a few).  Everything about this version of Solo is jut about what I envisioned he should look like in the ST.  Just outstanding!

That Tusken merc is very cool, especially with the custom designed cardback. The display base complements it perfectly :)
Chewie, may as ask once more (since you are a moderator at Yakface) if you can help me with  my registration there?

Okay, here it goes. I've got one done and I hope to get another done tomorrow, but we'll see.

This is Borga the Hutt. He's the "Godfather" of the underworld and he's got a serious problem. For a long time he had gone unchecked in the Outer-Rim when the Empire was in control but in the past several years that has changed. The Jedi have been resurrected by the Master Luke Skywalker and in recent years have become numerous enough to be a thorn in his side.

Borga brings together several organizations to meet and discuss a solution to this "Jedi" problem. The biggest and baddest Crime Syndicates in the galaxy attend and attempt to work together to rid themselves of Skywalker and his Jedi once and for all. Collectively they're gangs are still no match for the Jedi who are backed by the Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic Leia Solo.

Borga decides the best way to handle this problem is to call in a mark with the ruler of Mandalore and combine their armies for an all out war with the forces of good.

This was an old POF deleted scene Jabba I had laying around. The sculpt was so bad I had no remorse ripping him apart and re-sculpting him. He is actually modeled after a horned toad. I thought this made him look a little more threatening than Jabba. Hope you all like him and his bad attitude.   ;D

Here's my entry. It's a Gran Jedi, Pars Feen. Obviously, I have no idea if there will be a Gran Jedi in the new movies. However, I made the figure with what I think will be the spirit of the new movies. First, I think we'll see more and more exotic alien Jedi (including Gran). Second, I think we'll see more yellow lightsabers. Finally, I think we'll see more morally ambiguous characters. I tried to make this Jedi halfway between a Sith and Jedi, with black robes but not completely black. Enjoy!

DS:  I commented on this over at Yakface, but wanted to add one here as well.  This is not only a fantastic creation in its own right, but a TERRIFIC idea for a plot line for the upcoming ST.  I would love to see a character like this, even in a smaller role, worked into the new films.

DarthCrassus:  I like the Gran Jedi; nice look, especially since I'm no fan of boring tan Jedi robes.

Having survived the Battle of Dathomir during the Clone Wars, Mother Talzin, in league with Darth Sidious, created an army of Nightbrothers and Nightsisters trained by Darth Maul.  This army was to be used against the Jedi, had Order 66 not been successful.  After the Purge, the Emperor ordered a blockade of Dathomir, knowing the power of Mother Talzin and her minions.  The clans were held isolated for decades until the Empire fell.  With Darth Sidious dead - Mother Talzin was able to forge an alliance with the Imperial fleet in orbit of Dathomir.  This fleet, armed with hundreds of force sensitive Nightbrothers and Nightsisters, along with Darth Maul, and Mother Talzin, now make their way to Coruscant to wage war with the New Republic...

===

This is my third (and final) Mother Talzin custom.  I designed her to be a cross between the Clone Wars appearance, and what she may look like in a movie - for the 2013 Joint Site Episode VII Customizing Challenge.

Wow, I like the Gran Jedi. Really glad to see such a strong SW Alien showing for the entries.

I was hoping someone would do a Jaina in pilot flight suit, but that combat suit is ftw too.

And man what a great villain for the new movie. Mother Talzin would fit that bill nicely.

What awesome new entries. Time to go add them to the Facebook Gallery.

Revanfan1 we need to have at least one picture, not link, posted for it to count as an entry. Let me go see if I can find one and post for you. We just use standard bbc image code [img] tags for the messages here in the forums.

Update: Got it loaded. Now you have an entry.

Post by: Darth_Akbar on March 30, 2013, 08:19:06 PM
Sneaking in at the last minute, heres my entry to the EPVII contest!  I'm realitively new to customizing, but I was so excited with the theme this time around that I just had to dive in and create the whole cast!
From left to right, Jaina Solo, Gai Akbar, Convoy Escort Stormtrooper, Jedi Master Luke, Darth Mon'Doom, R2-D2, C-3p0, Imperial Tracker, and Brax Skywalker.  I didn't wanna take up too much room with individual photos of every figure, so I just picked a few of my favorites for close ups here.  I'll probably start a custom thread soon and post more there, along with my other customs.  Anyways, starting off with my personal favorite of the group, Gai Akbar!
(http://24.media.tumblr.com/7b6679fffd11eebf35f8cdca2235e2dc/tumblr_mki7tcciF41ra499qo2_r1_1280.jpg)(http://25.media.tumblr.com/bd46a190ca25204ca7a2b06956dbd190/tumblr_mki7tcciF41ra499qo3_r1_1280.jpg)
The son of Admiral Akbar, Gai chose not to follow in his fathers legendary footsteps, instead becoming a mercenary and bounty hunter.  Rather then go the typical route of trying to blend in, Gai dresses as flamboyantly and stylishly as possible, doing everything he can to get noticed in pursuit of his dream of becoming the most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy.  The question is, will his talents be put to use in service of the Alliance, or the Imperial Remnant?

(http://25.media.tumblr.com/4bcf56ad63251107d5a0f6627be41e3e/tumblr_mki7tcciF41ra499qo5_r1_1280.jpg)(http://25.media.tumblr.com/1daf16c85929e5fdd34673a67453ab97/tumblr_mki7tcciF41ra499qo7_r1_1280.jpg)(http://24.media.tumblr.com/705a236d858882590af4457cb567dc2c/tumblr_mki7tcciF41ra499qo6_r1_1280.jpg)
Darth Mon'Doom, Sith Master, former apprentice of Asaj Venteress, and leader of the Imperial Remnant.  I wanted a masochistic, Hellraiser meets Star Wars look for this guy, and I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.  My original plan was to sculpt Darth Maul horns onto him but, alas, I ran out of time :(

The Imperial Tracker is a special, highly trained class of Stormtrooper in service to the Empire.  Sent to far off worlds and space stations, the Tracker is willing to go to the ends of the galaxy in pursuit of his target.  As the Empires strength and numbers continue to dwindle, the role of the Tracker becomes more and more important, his guerilla fighting tactics resembling the Rebellion of old.

The Imperial Convoy Escort Trooper serves as the first line of defense aboard shipping and medical convoys, in addition to serving aboard fuel depots and "Imperial Shipyards."  (See what I did there?)  More than anything else, this one was about creating a cool trooper, haha.

I think so as well - even a stand alone movie with her, Maul, etc (post-ROTS but pre-ANH) - from your lips to Disney's huge ears!

Grand Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

I was in such a rush to meet Saturday night's deadline (had to re-size photos) that I didn't post any information on the figure.

I used a vintage AOTC Obi-Wan body and a Luke head from one of the comic two-packs. I dry-brushed gray into Luke's hair, to give him a more mature, regal look. Also painted the body to have a more elevated Jedi position look.

I've been customizing for at least 6 years (probably longer), but haven't really posted much on the web. That may change.

Once the deadline for the contest had passed, we had a very difficult time choosing a grand prize winner, but our consensus was that the first place winner should be forum member Bubba Fett - congratulations to him for his amazing custom entries... and with that, he gets to choose from the following prizes:

- Sideshow Boba Fett

- Sideshow Airborne Trooper

- Gentle Giant General Veers

Bubba Fett, please reply to this thread and let us know which prize you will be taking.  We will then get in touch with you regarding shipping details.

Everyone else - STAY TUNED!  We'll be announcing the TWO RANDOM WINNERS in the coming days!

Seriously though, thank you all so much.

With a name like Bubba Fett, it only makes sense that I would choose the Sideshow Boba Fett as my prize!

I applied many techniques that have been shared by the ISY and Yakface members, so in a way, this is proof of how these forums are helping to improve us all!
