Title: Rex Smoke's Customs
Post by: rex smoke on December 11, 2012, 03:28:06 PM
Hi, new here and thought I'd like to put some customs up for critiquing. Since I'm new to customizing these aren't that great but they're a start. Thanks to Lucasclones for inspiring me to customize.
Sorry for the blurry pics

Can't see the pictures.

If you use the fourth code in your album on photobucket (the img code). That is the ticket to see the pictures in the post.

Welcome to ISY by the way.

Great looking customs and very nicely weathered clones! I totally agree with you on Hasbro's idea of articulation on their latest figures.

And nah, you didn't go overboard on the gore lol  ;) He looks really cool, is that a head coming out of his body armor there? Pretty cool stuff there, man!

Heres some new ones, I havent really been doing many customs lately but I picked up some shock trooper in retro packaging for $8 and decided I needed a squad leader. I have a couple things in the works right now: an astromech and a bull rancor.

The demolitions expert looks fantastic!  I like the added TOR pauldron.  Did you "wash" that stormie or is that the sandtrooper fig from the TLC collection (2008)?  Either way, good choice; the grime befits this guy in particular.

I loved the look of TCW shock trooopers better than the live-action ones in ROTS.  Yours is perfect!  Nice job on the paint details: nice and bright!

But the  empire is dead after  EP VI  besides the  imperial remnant isn't it? So there isn't any storm troopers left.

Well I sure hope all the Stormies aren't gone. I was kinda hoping some of them would get some visions of grandeur and kind of start their own garrisons, etc. Thats the cool thing about all this, its open to whatever interpretation.

Gotta agree with Chewie though, this would have made one cool contest entry.

I did a few more in my free time during spring break: Kazdan Paratus, Jawa in costume, Fox with articulated knees and ankles, a touched up version of my earlier Kix, and that last one is just for fun.

And I have a question for all you experienced customizers out there, what kind of glue do you guys use? I try to stick to using super glue (get it? "stick to super glue" lol) but it doesn't work for kitbashing guns and sabers since they're so small and then hot glue just looks sloppy and drips.

I love he Jawa in R2 costume; great idea!

As for your question about glues: I use a plastics-only super glue that I bought at a local Home Depot.  It comes with a small bottle use to prepare the surfaces of the two pieces of plastic you want to join and then a second bottle of the actual glue.  (Cant remember the name brand off the top of my head, but its the standard brand sold there.)  The  glue must be held together for about 30 seconds to achieve the "hold" you want.  It works pretty well for holding weapons, as well as figure parts, together (at least in my experience).

haha love the jawa costume too funny.  great job on the 501st troops, i been meaning to getting around to doing some realistic versions just no time yet.  as far as the glue goes i stick to gel type, can't remember the brand off the top of my head but it has a blue cap and the squeezable sides are blue too.  i find at walmart/target.  it makes a heck of a lot easier to control the flow of the glue, and easier to wipe off (quickly) if when u join parts together and theres some "spillage" also makes for great filler for those gaps that in some parts when joined too.

I think Spry is correct, if folks are doing even half of what I am doing in their own backyards right now they are probably too pooped to get onto their electronic devices. Give folks time to respond.

Rex my friend, people are busy, give everyone time to see the thread. The Rancor looks great, what did you use for the tusks? Also loving the Mando and Mastif Handler.
Well it's a little gross but I actually used real bones. My house is on property in the middle of the woods and we hunt so I used some old bones I found in the woods. After that I boiled them and cleaned them with bleach

The Marshalls near me has been carrying shock troopers. I think they are around five or 6 bucks. Also if you have a Five Below near you, that's a great pace to find cheap figures.

That's some great detailing on the stormie and Wolfpack clone; the helmet design looks like it would have been a pain at that size!

I was scrolling through your thread and loved the work you did with the bleached bones on the bull rancor and, even though it was an older image, the Jawa in droid disguise was a great idea!  You've got some good stuff here, can't wait to see more!

When I want a nice even coat of paint, Krylon Fusion has been working for me.  It even stays put in the ball joints.   I believe the company has a whole new line of spray paint that works on plastic.  I'm getting ready to post something I did for my daughter X-mas 2012.  I'll give you a heads up.

BTW. ... Love Bly.

So for my Bday last week I got some figures to use as customs and then I also got some Gundam paint pens. I heard about them from the owner of a toy shop in chicago when I was there a few months back. Theyre made for Gundam models (they look sorta like transformers) but they are the same kind of plastic that figures are made of. So I tried them out on a Gregor I was working on and they are awesome! They cover any color (even neon Boss orange) with usually 1 coat. The white covers up any unwanted stripes or details on clones perfectly and then the fine tipped pens are stupendous. I used them for the hash marks and they look amazing. If you guys haven't tried these I highly recommend them. At least give the fine tip and white pens a try. I know there on amazon so go check them out.

I was never into the clone customs until I started seeing awesome work like this and have to admit that I now see the fun and challenge of it because having done a handful I am still in awe (and to be honest sometimes envious) of the detail put into these and the sharp lines of the armor decoration. Great work!

Thanks, you should really start doing some. They're a ot of fun to make because there's really no limit on what clones can have on their armor. Their paint apps come from their imagination and i figure i might as well use mine for clone armor too!

Sorry about the long wait between updates. Haven't been able to find a 6" Sandtrooper for the AT-AT Driver's body. So I was finally able to get my hands on some good fodder at a toy show this weekend in Kalamazoo Michigan. It was really a blast to go and I got some good stuff too, 2 animated Gentle Giant statues , a sandtrooper bust, and ArtFX Boba Fett , and A load of other figures. I thought the prices were good, but that's for you guys to judge if you go. If you're ever in this area you should check it out, I highly recommend it. It's every thanksgiving weekend, and every May also. So you probably don't enjoy hearing me ramble on like this so I'll cut to the chase: I made this guy out of a Stormie I got at the Toy expo by etching out the extra parts to the visor and adding some parts.
P.S. Does anyone have an extra staff for the newest version of Amanaman?

Long time no post! It's been a while but I assure you I haven't stopped customizing or collecting. I have 3 new figures to show you guys, Tup and the 501st clone are for me but the Wolffe is a commission. Before we get to the picture I have 2 questions: 1. On a scale of 1-10 how out of scale do you think the newest dewback looks in relation to six inch figures(10 being it looks perfect and 1 being since when did sand troopers ride babies?) 2. I have a Roron Corobb figure and I'm not to happy with his swivel elbows so I am looking for replacement arms. Any ideas Pablo Jill is almost perfect except I just need thinner upper arms.

Nice, I like that second one. I think the bucket work on it with the weather (deep) is great. Off to share.

Personally, I would think the current Dewback would look very good on six inch figure. I think if you stay patient you may even be happy as early as SDCC, but no doubt if they are hinting at making wampas and taun tauns they will make this one eventually too. I have no insider info, but it even makes too much sense even for Hasbro to be irrational about imo.

I tried the 6" sandy riding the newest dewback and it is to big for the dewback. But it got me thinking that the dewback would be a good size to customize to look like a different creature and then it would be perfect.

The other option I was thinking was the 12" Hasbro dewback, height wise it looks good but the length of it might be to long.

I know.  Once you start using Aves, you use it for almost everything.
I also know what you mean about those High Def close ups.  Before you make any tweaks, pick up Obi and have a good look at him, first.  I was going to touch up my Bariss Offee based on some flaws I caught on my images, but when I picked her up I realized how crazy that was.  They're just too small.

Nice work.
You must be using some kind of template to get the texture on the cloth.  Luke's tunic is a bit stark white, but I really like his leggings.

Thanks to all of you. To get the texture for the robes I just took the piece I cut off the obiwan robe and gently pressed it on till the texture was imprinted.

Been off the yards for quite a while so its time for a BIG update!

First up is a 6" scale Jawa! Made from a 3 3/4" Tusken raider in a jedi robe with his face details shaved off.

Next is a 6"  R2-Q5. I have now discovered painting astromechs is the most tedious thing ever. I have  a whole new respect for wraithnine.
(http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s658/rexsmoke/832CD693-F9BE-47EE-8C0B-299FF77B7247_zpspsskxlum.jpg) (http://s1310.photobucket.com/user/rexsmoke/media/832CD693-F9BE-47EE-8C0B-299FF77B7247_zpspsskxlum.jpg.html)

And last but not least a 6" Gonk made from some tuperware containers.
