Hi everyone. I posted a bunch of stuff here years ago, and really haven't done much in the way of SW projects, so stopped posting (lack of relevance to the forum and all that). But I finally returned to the SW fold thanks to my son's interest in Star Wars. He has of course made great use of my vehicles and action figures, but as we know Hasbro has neglected the most iconic Star Wars ship of all...the Imperial Star Destroyer.
We have a new baby on the way, and as such purchased a fancy new crib...which came in a really big box. My little guy has been using various pieces of cardboard for a Star Destroyer, and I had a thought...I have this massive amount of cardboard destined for the curb...why not make a Star Destroyer from all that for my son?
Now, don't measure the proportions, but I figured the basic shape I roughed out was recognizable enough...

I used heavy cardboard for the main shape and structure, then thinner cardboard for the greeblie detail, and then cereal box cardboard for a few spots. Lots of carpenter glue, duct, and masking tape were also used.

Its about 33" long, and I sliced two sections open on the top for my little guy to stuff Star Wars figures into it. He seems pretty happy with it:

I spent a few bucks on white spray paint and foam balls for the shield generators (which I'll have to fix, since the partially disintegrated from the paint). Otherwise, I made it from stuff from the recycle bin. The way I see it, this is a practice run for a more elaborate vehicle made of wood or styrene...but to be honest, this cardboard ship seems to really fit the bill.

Finished this up a few days ago...my son and I tackled the Sail Barge.

Its all corrugated cardboard, cereal box, masking and duct tape, and carpenter's glue. It took about 2 or 3 days all told, but they've been spread out over the last week and a half. Its not an accurate recreation or anything, but since Hasbro missed the 30th anniversary of Jedi without announcing this, I figured...why not? Besides, Jedi is my little guy's favorite SW movie, and his favorite scene is the barge battle. He did cutting, gluing, helped draw the templates, and spray painted this thing...some serious skills, man!

WOW! You've created a size template for the sail-barge that Hasbro need to mass produce. This really is an impressive creation, the images don't give away it's true scale until you see the figures on board.

First, the look in your son's eyes is priceless. You are such a great geek dad.
Second. Pick up a little bit of two component plastic repair medium or a tub of wood filler at your local hardware store. Those usually costs about $5-6, and you can use them for so many other projects. Take a small amount of the stuff and roll a thin layer on the surface of your styrofoam balls. Once cured, it will take paint without disintigrating. The other solution is to use a ping pong ball instead of styrofoam.

The idea was definitely to produce something that was not at an insane scale, but that could exist in the vintage Kenner or current Hasbro line. It was more of an impression of the sail barge than an accurate recreation...the simplicity of some of my choices made it possible for my son to be involved as well. The best part about working with cardboard is how easy it is to achieve curved surfaces (unlike styrene, which is a pain in the arse). The cheapness is also a big plus, and I gotta tell ya...if you build the support structure with enough material, it stands up to some play.
That tip on coating the styrofoam balls in plaster or spaclking compound is brilliant...I'll be using that for sure.

The Tatooine Skiff has been an elusive toy for me over the years. Whenever Hasbro has released it, it’s been as an exclusive and has had a ridiculous mark-up on eBay by those who are willing t sell it. After losing many auctions, and ultimately giving up, I figured, since I made the Barge, and the epic battles that have been happening in my house over the Great Pit of Carkoon (an unused Bumbo baby seat covered by a beige blanket), I figured the skiff would be a great subject for a small scale styrene build.

030 and 060 styrene sheet and some tube and rod make up the elements of this guy. I wasn’t trying to do anything spectacular here, just make something that looks the part and can stand up to some play.

One feature that was a must was to have a retracting plank...a simple bit of engineering that almost works!

Your work is amazing. I did manage to score a Tatooine Skiff off eBay, but yours is far superior. The detail is great, and the scale of yours is way better. There is no way you can fit a smuggler, a Wookiee, a Jedi, a scoundrel and 4 skiff guards on the Hasbro release without it looking like a Benny Hill skit.
I need your specs, if ever I start doing vehicles. The Barge is an intimidating first project, but a skiff....

I have to admit that I'm not quite sure how the scale compares...they look close to the same size, but I think mine might be a tad bigger.
Thanks for the kind words everyone, and I would like to extend a big thanks to Tamer and Lucasclone for inviting me to do the podcast...it was a blast! One thing that came from it was a discussion of some earlier work I did with vehicles...I had made several large scale scratchbuilds for my 6" Star Wars customs that I haven't posted here, mainly because I consider them to be a bit too "early" in my learning process. But then I thought...what the hell! The next few posts are copied and pasted from my thread on the Fwoosh forum, so some of the context might be off (being that the posts are going on 8 years old and are from another forum), but the WIP process is included for a few them and I didn't want to miss anything.

Its funny...the color is actually not what I intended. The spray can said 'camoflage', but the cap was this really nice beige-green color. It ended up being this very green, military color...but I actually really liked the way it looked, so I stuck with it.

I trimmed down the head and rebuilt it to look a little closer to the original model in terms of shape...its still way off, but closer than what it was before. The front laser canons are mechanical pencils mounted onto a couple of plastic craft canisters. The side blasters are fodder items that I've been dying to use on something for a very long time.

Much like the TIE Fighter, I couldn't stand to have the vehicle without the appropriate personnel. In this case, I went with something closer to an AT-AT pilot, since the AT-ST is just a grumpy looking guy with a helmet and goggles.

He's made from some ML parts, with cloth and leather uniform, styrene chest armor, and an original sculpt helmet fashion from epoxy putty and vinyl.

I wanted the c0ckpit to look like a cramped tank interior, and also wanted it to be a bit stronger in look and design than my TIE and X-Wing interiors. The control panel is decorated with odds and ends, as are the walls. The textured grating is from a small dollar store plastic basket that I cut to size.

Well...I made an X-Wing, so I HAD to make a TIE Fighter...one without the other just makes no sense. Once I had locked down the Hamster Ball suggestion in the Shop Talk section, I started constructing the supports and the wings...but the problem was that I had nobody to fly the darn thing when I finished it. So, I made a pilot:

The parts list for him is kind of irrelevant, since I basically assembled him from bits and pieces. There's some Hush Catwoman, SMC Daredevil, Deadpool, and a few other odds and ends in there as well. The helmet is an original sculpt in epoxy putty, with hosiery from a Mr. Freeze figure. Cloth and Fabric make up the flight suit and flak vest.

Like my stormtrooper, I used vinyl to make the sharper edges of the helmet details by layering panels. I decided to add silver trim to the edges of the panels to make them stand out a little more.

This ended up being even more time consuming than the X-Wing, and I'm not sure why. The wings took a very long time to assemble, since there were so many individual steps to get a clean look to the whole thing.

There is much less detail on my version than the one in the movies, partially because I'm lazy, and partially because I kind of liked the simplified look without all of the "greeblies" sticking out every which way on the wings. Who knows...I may decide to devote more time to detailing, but I'm happy with how it looks for now...this thing was enough work as it is.

The c0ckpit was really annoying, since I had to fit a bunch of very imprecise pieces into a round structure...lots of trial and error to make the limited detailing fit.

I'm really happy with the proportions of the wings to the ball...the Hasbro/Kenner toy's wings always looked to small, and I wanted to make sure that my version seemed a bit more accurate in that regard.

The X-Wing is, for me, an iconic toy from my childhood. The version that I had when I was really young was from a yard sale or a flea market, and as such was missing the plastic canopy. But that really didn't matter…I still loved it. I did manage to get a complete X-Wing when I was ten (thanks Brad), but it still sort of stands as a very significant toy in my childhood memories.
Which leads me to this project.
I found a place called Industrial Plastics that sells large sheets of styrene for the same price that I was paying for a tiny piece at the model shop...which of course drove me absolutely insane. As is the first order of business when a new avenue opens to me, I started to think how this discovery could be used for customizing purposes. Now, I've been kind of burnt out on figure customizing, so I thought it might be cool to branch out from my juice bottle rocket ship experiment and tackle something more...involved. My first thought was to make a Batmobile (which I still intend to do, by the way), but then I realized that Star Wars provided an equally compelling wellspring of inspiration. Thusly, I decided to make a "toy" X-Wing in the same vane as the original (but perhaps a bit more detailed and grittier).
I'd like to state that the finished product is very inaccurate to the source material, and that I, in many respects, cut corners with regard to recreating the models as they actually appeared in the film. I'm also mimicking the proportions of the original Kenner X-Wing toy, but scaled up to 1/12 scale. In the former case, I'm claiming "artistic license"...in the latter case I'm claiming homage to that beloved toy of my childhood. Do you buy it? ;)

The basic structure is large pieces of styrene with some support struts used in back half. I basically worked out the size I wanted, drew the pattern on the styrene, cut the first shape, and traced it to create the opposite side. Lots of cutting and fitting followed, since I had no set plan for what I was doing.
I used ordinary Testor's model cement, since its designed to fuse model kits which are made from styrene that has been molded...the thickness of the sheet is 1/16", which is a great size for both stability and for cutting purposes. I've worked with thicker pieces, and its just way too difficult and dangerous to use. The basic structure that you see above turned out a lot sturdier than I could have ever hoped for.

The engine nacelles are some PVC plumbers parts that I eyed at a hardware store...the plumbing aisle is a treasure trove for this sort of thing (I also picked up the parts I'm using for the laser cannons there too). I built support struts to attach the nacelles to the wings and the side of the fuselage. I'd like to mention that I wasted several nights trying to engineer a functional "s-foil" mechanism that would allow the wings to open and close. After a lot of frustration, I gave up and decided to just have the wings permanently "open."

The wings are hinged, but as I just wrote, are permanently set in the attack position. The placement of the wings and nacelles are a little too delicate for my liking, but have stood up pretty well to handling.
For the surface detail, I"etched" the panels into the styrene with an exacto knife, and sanded down the surface. These lines did get lost during the priming stage in some cases, but they provided at least some guidance for my final paint job.

Artoo had to be removable (since it always annoyed me that he wasn't in the original toy), and I may still do some interior detailing to the back section. When I was a kid, I used the battery compartment of the Kenner toy as a place for Luke to store his accessories, so I may try to make some sort of hatch along those lines later on.

The seat is a professor X wheelchair, and the surrounding structure is a wierd X-Files figure accessory. I was sweating about doing the c-o-c-kpit, but I think is provides a decent looking base for further details.

Whether its too extreme a variance of color or not, I'm not sure, but I kind of like the way the varying shades look for the panels.

This was by far the most time-consuming and expensive project I've ever attempted. It took over two and a half weeks to complete, and I spent about $50 in supplies for this monstrosity.

This one was a real challenge. Not that the other vehicles weren't, but the design of the Snowspeeder is a little more complex, and required some real trial and error to figure out. I learned quite a bit from my mistakes on this one (and trust me...there's plenty!), and I hope I can avoid some of them on my next project.

This is the basic structure. I started with a rectangular box for the c0ckpit (can we please get this friggin' word taken out of the word filter?), then developed the rest of the structure outward from that point. Once the body was constructed, I puttied and sanded the heck out of the thing.

Next up was the detailing. Panels were made using paper-thin styrene, with small rivet holes drilled in with the tip of an exacto knife. The harpoon gun is a modified Tom Jane Punisher machine gun that has been anchored to a handle inside the c0ckpit with a screw to allow it to swivel. Odds and ends were used for various details.

Now, because all I had for a pilot was a girl-Luke, I needed another Rebel pilot. I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to make an alien figure, and my first instinct was to make either a Mon Calamri or a Rodian...I chose the Mon Calamari.

I suppose it could be Ackbar earlier in his career, still duking it out with the grunts on the front. ANyway, the base figure is a LOTR Gondorian Soldier, with hands from a Stan Winston Studios monster's hands. The head is an original sculpt in Apoxie Sculpt, with some wire whiskers.

I stuck pretty close to the film's final design for both the ship and the paint job...primarily because I just really like the Snowspeeder, and wanted one at this scale. There are some serious unintentional diversions from the filming models, primarily because I wasn't paying attention during some crucial points in the construction, but I'm relatively happy with the overall impression.

The hull was hand painted with a mixture of grey and white acrylics, and was weathered with a combination of washes and faint drybrush effects. The paint job was almost as time consuming as the actual construction.

The c0ckpit was a letdown, because I really should have painted and detailed it BEFORE I made the rest of the ship around it...there are bare patches of white inside where I couldn't reach with my brush. Next time, I'll detail and paint the interior first.

I'm using the 2009 Hasbro toy, the Sculpting a Galaxy book, and the Cross Sections book.

I plan on covering most of the edges with a combo of masking tape and cereal box cardboard.

Nope, I have no idea how do that so that the joints will support the weight of the head and thorax.

The walker will be articulated at the top of the legs and the head will probably be able to rotate.
What does the interior look like?
While not completed yet, I plan to have it look relatively accurate to the cockpit from ROTJ, as well as incorporate details from the cross sections book.

Make the legs solid, unarticulated pieces and make them from stacked cardboard...they should hold the weight of the cockpit.

Cardboard Black Series AT-ST
Hasbro would be nuts to make vehicles in the 6” scale...they would be massive and cost a fortune. But, much to my wife’s delight, I’ve been toying with making custom vehicles...and this is the first attempt at creating something “accurate” to display the Black Series figures with.

I measured all the dimensions of Hasbro’s 2009 AT-ST and doubled them, figuring that the slightly underscaled original would translate into something that would be close to actual proportions of the AT-ST. It’s probably a smidge big, but I like it that way.

This thing was made from corrugated cardboard, masking tape, carpenter glue, and some wooden doweling...super cheap and super fast to make.

This is fantastic! Hard to believe it is mostly paper.
It would be cool to see you build this using Styrene or some other materials that doesn't leave the corrugated edges like the cardboard. I would love to just sit and watch you construct things like this.

my only criticism is the same as Tamer, the corrugated edges of the cardboard showing is an unfortunate side effect of this medium. However, that being said I love the fact that you used masking tape on some of the corners to hid it. That was ingenious!
My only other criticism is that maybe the "neck" is a little tall... but that is a MINOR critique! Everything else about this is fantastic.
I am assuming then that the legs are not poseable?

Thanks for the great feedback guys. Cardboard has its drawbacks of course, but with some more effort it could be made to have a bit more polish. The problem of course with styrene is that it has become more expensive...whereas cardboard is something I get from the recycle bin at work...it allows for the project to happen at a fraction of the cost. The way I look at it, the Chicken Walker here is something akin to an impressionistic sketch...it could use some more fine tuning and finesse, but you get the idea. But...some of those edges could be filled in if one were to take the time to apply a little more tape and glue.

Just a thought while I was looking back at this. Something I've done in the past when working with cardboard is use some kind of spackle to fill in the corners and cracks. Elmers makes a great wood putty that will sand with ease when dry... or you can use sheetrock spackle.
This is just an idea to get a more smoothed edge anywhere where you have corners or cracks to fill.

Oh yeah, subtledesign's X-Wing and TIE Interceptor...those look really sharp. I don't have the equipment or know-how, but its hard to argue with the results he's getting from the process.

There's no question that a little extra effort would go a long way to making the project look finished. Spackling, putty, or even some strategically placed tape would certainly do the trick. My MO these days is cheap, quick, and easy though...I haven't made a project since I posted this, purely because time is at a premium. It's the exercise that is the source of pleasure.

A new year, a new Star Wars project!
My son has really gotten into Rebels and Clone Wars, which has also sucked me in as well. The one thing that seems like a rather conspicuously absent vehicle from the Clone Wars line is the Twilight. I figured I'd give it a go.

It's way smaller than the ship's scale on the show (which would make it about the size of the Faclon), and it's more vintage Kenner in terms of proportions, but I'm happy with how the basic shape is coming together, and ESPECIALLY please with the articulated wing on the bottom of the ship.

I basically built a housing over the ribbed structure you see here, drilled a whole through it, and forced a length of styrene tubing through the holes. There is enough tension there between the tube and the path through which it is forced through to allow it to keep its position up or down. I then glued the ends of the tubing to the understructure in place. It's basically being kept in place through the tightness of the fit. It may wear out over time, but it works like gangbusters now.

The Ghost!
Alright Hasbro, fine…if my kid and I want the Ghost, then by gum I’ll just have to make it myself!

Made from styrene sheet for the main construction, and an oversized plastic Easter egg for the forward canopies, this took a good long while to bring together. I was hoping to have it done for Easter (my son got the Phantom from the Easter Bunny), but I didn’t quite hit that timetable.

The basic body is 22” by 22”, roughly 2” wider/longer than the vintage Falcon. My son can pick it up at least.

Again, like the Twilight, I imagined how this would work as a vintage toy, with clear inspiration from the old Falcon with the removable cockpit and hold sections.

It ain’t too sophisticated, but I think it’s recognizable as the Ghost, and it should provides some decent play time.

The Siege line re-ignited my interest in collecting Transformers (as I think has happened with many folks), and my collection has become a favourite of my kids. I decided to embark on a major project: construct sturdy, massive custom toys of the Ark and the Nemesis. The Ark was finished at the beginning of the year, and I have now only just completed the Nemesis.

Made from 1/8" thick styrene sheet with detailing using 020 thick sheet, this giant vehicle is about 32" long.

This one has been a project I’ve wanted to tackle for ages. Once I saw episode 2 of The Mandalorian, it became a red hot necessity to make it. I considered getting the Disney Exclusive Sandcrawler (since making one from scratch was probably going to equal out to the same price when factoring in styrene, materials, and time), but I wanted something that had SCALE...and making my own was too much of a good time to pass up.

Styrene and Testors Model Cement are the main ingredients. I used small, very strong magnets to create embedded closures for the front entrance and side access panel, and attached recessed furniture casters to the bottom so it can roll.

The dimensions are 30” long by 16” tall and 11” wide.

It has two removable panels, a sliding door/hatch, an escape chute (where the main access is between the treads on the left hand side of the crawler), and of course the forward gate/draw bridge/main hold access. The cockpit has a hinged canopy as well.

This is probably my favourite thing that I’ve built of this sort. It’s basically a giant box, but it’s the type of thing that Hasbro probably can’t build this day and age, and it came out a lot better abd sturdier than I expected. And the kids love it (even my ten year old is kind of excited about it!).

Everyone has said it already, but that crawler is beyond sweet. I love seeing all the frame pieces from old plastic models being used for pipes and other details. So much beautiful detail.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Really, there is no pattern, just reference material that I used and made it up as I went. I did some drawings and used the Star Wars Chronicle and Sculpting a Galaxy books to determine proportions. My original plans had this thing being twice as big, but scaled it way back.
Anyway, my latest project (and last one for a while):
Razor Crest

The main thing I was looking for at NY Toy Fair was an announcement of a Vintage Collection Razor Crest. Instead we got...another Troop Transport and a reissue of the Slave 1. With that disappointment out of the way, I set about making my own damn Razor Crest.

Styrene is the material, with curved surfaces roughed out using the same method I applied to my USS Enterprise from 9 years (!) ago...creating a skeletal rounded structure filled out with a LOT of thin styrene planks. I puttied and sanded the canopy and front, and opted to leave the engines unputtied to give the look of more panel lines and texture. The cannons were based around a wooden dowel that I shaped with my dremel to create a cannon tip.

On the show, there are hatches on each side and one main hatch in the back. I opted to create hinged and magnetized hatches for the the right side and the aft of the ship, and the canopy would hinge from the front. To simplify my life, I didn’t worry about having transparent canopy “glass” and opted to go for the same look with the window sections painted black.

The cockpit is pretty simplistic: I made it so I could fit Mando (and a Baby Yoda if they ever make a 3.75 scaled version), and there is a small hatch to the main hold behind where he sits.

The main hold has pretty bare-bones detailing...just a few control panels, the Vac-Tube, and Mando’s gun cabinet. Obviously, this thing is under-scaled, but I wanted this toy to be small enough for my seven year old son to zoom around the room, but big enough to fit the necessary characters and still look good positioned next to the Sandcrawler.

The wings should be more elongated, but in person this thing is really exactly what I wanted. As soon as I watched the first episode in November, I knew I was going to make this thing if Hasbro wasn’t getting it out there by the end of 2020. I happened to wander into the Wal Mart toy aisle when I was making my weekly trip to get groceries, and I nearly fell over when I saw Mando and Cara Dune on the pegs. Perfect timing to coincide with my finishing up this project:

Brilliant! I like the design choice to keep it smaller and simpler. We collectors can get a bit hypercritical about "screen accurate" when they are toys after all, and what's the point if your children can't enjoy them right? The ship looks really great. You have a spectacular sense for modeling these ships, I am really impressed. What a great addition to your collection. Magnificent work. I'm sure if you ever decided to tackle a more to scale model it would be jaw-dropping, as this version is pretty amazing and a welcome addition to the Star Wars fleet.

This is simply amazing!
Did you consider using clear plastic from blister or window packages for the canopy? You could then paint in “smoke” color which is essentially a translucent black so the canopy can be clear :)
So cool that it has opening doors!
Lights for the engines and seats for Mando and passengers?
Do you plan to do a blackwash of the ship for a hit more weathering?

Pasaana Transport Skimmer
The dearth of new figures and vehicles for Rise of Skywalker meant that I had some opportunity to tackle some custom projects. The first one I wanted to try was the Pasaana Transport Skimmer, a very old school Star Wars design that really tickled my fancy. It was small enough that it wouldn’t be all encompassing and only take a few weeks. Also, RoS Rey was the only character that got the 3.75” treatment, and I had Chewie and BB-8 to fill out the rest of the crew. Where’s my Sexy Ascot Poe and Sexy Vest Finn, Hasbro? I gotta make the Cargo Skimmer, but need the characters to pilot it!

See? Wee little build! It’s about 10” long, and was a lot of fun to put together. I sacrificed some of the finer details around the steering vanes and the bottom, and rejigged the back to make it sturdier to stand up to being played with (it may still get broken, but it can always be repaired).

I have to agree with you! The aesthetic of this vehicle is really OT like. Heck I fogot that this is a 100% custom build for a moment because I was distracted by this incredible paintjob of yours! Panzer III is the tank that my kid chose as the other side’s tank. This is an earlier German tank, and is most associated with the initial Blitzkrieg push into Western and Eastern Europe. This went together a LOT faster than the Sherman, and I’m much happier with the end result.
