Title: Fishing
Post by: Tamer on June 09, 2008, 06:00:15 PM
What can I say? Thank goodness we have Chad to be able to add to this thread as I have yet to get out after em yet. I was planning on going one day last week, but it just didnt happen. Hopefully Chad can keep this thread alive. I am beginning to wonder what a fishing pole is? :-X

I went fishing in Michigan last week, and had a pretty good time.  Caught a few decent bluegill and a small mouth on worm and bobber, and almost landed a VERY good size fish of some sort with a Rapala.  Small, rattlin' Rapala I believe.  Got the fish all the way to the top of the water, saw it was a good foot to a foot and a half long, and it broke the line.  I forgot to correct the drag on it, so it just snapped it.  Babe Winkleman I am not.  However, I now have the fishing bug, and want to go out soon again.

wE had a lot of fun fishing in Warsaw out of Truman lake Friday! Caught several Perch, some catfish, and one bass. Most were small but one monster cat was looking about 18 inches long. He fought all the way in and nearly snapped my pole. As I pulled him from the water the line broke and I lost him. We are going back this weekend and I am going to restring that pole with some line of a more stout nature.

Man, I have too many stories of the one that got away too. It is starting to look like my first fishing is gonna be ocean the week after next. I have some good stories of ones that have just pulled the hook from the line fishing the ocean too. I haven't really done too good the last few years, but there is always a shark or a skate to reel in. I would love to see some sea trout or "weakfish" start hitting again like they were years ago when I decided to sink the coin to buy a surf pole.

Hope you get that big one Clint. Snap some pics! It might be the only way I see fish this summer!

Well hopefully I'll get up the the big pond of Mille Lacs Lake on sunday and try and see if I can snag some big Walleyes.  There is quite a bit of natural forage for them this year and it seems like the bite is pretty hit and miss.

Well I went camping this weekend for the first time with my little gal and we came home early because of thunderstorms all night last night and got soaking wet, but my little girl hauled in her first fish! Pics to follow. I will let you judge who is happier though. Man, that little girl, ain't scared of anything slimy or crawly or frisky. She grabbed hold of that bass like it was nothing. She only got upset when we let it go. She sure isn't gonna have a problem with daddy bringing home a few to eat. The lake I fished was called Jennings Randolph Lake and it is beautiful with some of the best shoreline and structural areas I have ever seen. The problem is I just can't figure out the particulars of it and there are only a few areas you can fish from the bank. Most of the lake goes out a few feet from shore and drops off the thirty or fourty feet.

Can't wait to see the pics Tamer.  Well our fishing trip this morning was a bust.  Not 1 walleye or bite.  Did catch a small perch.  The big issue right now is the lake is full of young of the year perch and some major bug hatches.  I never saw so much forage on the locator then today.  So it is pretty hard to compete against natural food.

Well, I forgot to take my camera on Fri but the wife and I made it to the fishing dock for an hour or two and had a good time. There was alot of debris from a rainstorm the night before but I did manage to reel in a 18 inch channel catfish. It might be the same one that eluded me the previous week. We caught a couple of perch and a couple of other cats that were small but I can't wait till next time.
Tamer, I cant get over how cute your little helper is! And what a fisherman she is turning out to be!

I caught smaller stuff.....catfish, perch, and a small bass. There was so much chad swinning around, Im surprized we got any bites at all. I guess that they were sick of the chad and were wanting some worms for a change.
Am I spelling chad right? chad shad...look like minnows.

Been out fishing twice this week getting ready for a tournament on Saturday.  Tuesday was pretty slow and wet, rained all morning.  Caught a few small bass.  Today I went out and talk about a change.  Boated 4 bass and decided to leave, don't want to catch all of them before sat.  The four bass were between 3-4 pounds.  They were snapping today, hopefully they will be on sat.

Title: Re: Fishing

Well the tournament didn't go our way today.  Brought in 3 bass to get measured, but would have need 6 bass and a few northerns in the mix to get into the money.  About an hour ago had an electrical short in the boat, alot of smoke and melted hot wires.  So it seems that my fishing is done for the year, since it will be a major rewiring of the boat and that's a job for next spring, its hunting time now!
Title: Re: Fishing

Went out for a couple of hours today.  Thought it was going to be a great day, my second cast had a nice one on and then broke my line.  Next 2 casts had one on.  Did manage to catch one smaller bass.  But me being me when I hooked up the boat I forgot to lift up the tongue jack and proceeded to break that, so I had to drive around to try and find one this late in the year.  Did manage to find one at kmart and got that put on.

Title: Re: Fishing
Post by: Tamer on January 04, 2009, 12:44:15 PM
I am telling you some fresh fish sure does sound good to me right about now.  Do you use a shelter with heat Chad? I am anxious to see you explain how you pick a spot on the ice and set up shop and what type of bait you use and so on. If you have a chance sometime.
Title: Re: Fishing
Post by: Darth C on January 04, 2009, 12:52:37 PM
Most of the time you need a shelter.  It would be pretty cold standing out on the ice when its    -10 out.  We use small propane heaters to keep nice and toasty.  As far as finding a spot, the easiest way is drill a hole with your auger and put down a portable depth finder to get the depth and look for fish.  Once you have a spot picked out set up the shelter, drill your holes and start fishing.  As far as bait goes it depneds on the type of fish you are going after.  Sunfish we use a waxworm, like a grub.  Crappies, walleyes, and northerns use minnows.  I use to have a permenant fish house that I left out on the lake all season, but it got to be more work and always getting broke into.
Title: Re: Fishing
Post by: Tamer on January 04, 2009, 12:57:21 PM
Wow, its that cold!!!!!!!!  I like the sound of heat. I gotta wonder how much fishing I would be doing hugging that propane heater all the time. I guess if you were in a shelter a propane heater would get things pretty toasty though.

Well been doing a little fishing lately.  Been going after crappies the last 2 saturday nights and caught our limits each night.  The size isn't all that big, but big enough for for meals.  It now seems like our hot lake is going to winterkill this winter.  So usually when that is going to happen the DNR will open the lake up to unlimited fishing.

Well, this was our first fishing trip of the year and even though we had to fight the wind, we did alright.
In between the two of us, the wifey and I caught about 10 fish including about 3 good sized catfish and a decent large mouth bass. I couldnt get the crappie to bite but heard that they were biting strong just 1/2 mile away from where we were. This was the last weekend for spoonbilling and we seen alot of monster spoonbill from the fisherman who went to the low side of Truman dam.
First two shots were of one of the big cats and the second two shots are of the wifey's largemouth. "she was proud of that one and we ended up taking it home with us."

Well, I have all my surf fishing stuff ready to go. I just looked at the fishing reports from the beach and they didn't inspire confidence. Oh well, it will be nice to sit on the beach with a pole in one hand and a cervesa in the other. I am trying a new "fish finder" rig this time that is supposed to be good for striper and big drum. I will see how it works. I know one thing, stripping line off two surf reels and installing new is a pain. I did learn a few good nots I hope to put to good use to. Maybe I will be able to put a pic or two up when I get back. Probably not, but who knows?

Did a little fishing this past weekend for the first time this summer.  Used the new boat and it works great.  Saturday me and my dad went walleye fishing up on Mille Lacs Lake.  Got a few bites, but no fish.  We left after 4 hours of fishing and headed to the casino to pick up my mom.  I played some video poker for awhile and hit 2 $250 jackpots.  So I can home $400 to the good.  On Sunday I went out on my home lake of Big Lake bass fishing.  Had a pretty good morning, caught around a dozen fish.  The biggest was a 19 inch, 4 1/2 pounds.  It was my first fish of the morning and only being there for about 10 minutes.  The other bigger fish was around 2 1/2 pounds.  Got pics of the 2 bigger fish.  I kept the bigger one to mount this winter.

looks like the new boat is working out. Must be nice to catch a fish and a jackpot!

On the beach fishing note, the weather was so cold initially that I didn't get any bite off the surf. It was the first time I haven't been able to catch a fish. I went out bay fishing with a friend who lives down there and didn't catch anything other than a few way undersize flounder and some trash oyster crackers. We watched a guy catch two awesome stripers, one in the 34 inch twenty some pound range that he just threw back. I have been trying to catch one of those for years. Oh well.

I did find a spot to go crabbing and man did I finally find something to catch. It was really more netting than fishing, but I know we ended up with a few bushels by the time we got done and man did those babies steam up nice. I am already missing the crab meat.

Went out early this morning to get some fishing in before we go away for the weekend camping.  Took Dad out and we caught, well I did alot of bass.  Caught them on topwater prop baits and crankbaits.  Figured we caught around 25-30 fish, biggest being a 17 1/2" and I kept that work work on later this winter.

Well I had a little fishing outing on Friday from first light till about 3PM and I only had one fish on the stringer to show for it. It was a decent trout of all things. The lake is really nice looking and is very deep in places, but I will be daggone if I can figure out how to fish it. We were mainly using worms and a good variety of artificials. I pretty much used crankbaits. The fish finder showed tons of fish in the 100 ft. depth range, but we were only able to catch one walleye. I wish we would have had some live minnows, but we couldn't find any. So, it was a nice day, just not a lot of catching. I gave the trout to my father in law's friend so he could have dinner for him and his wife as he was the one to catch a walleye. Two fish on the stringer for three guys is pretty bad. Guess it could have been worse. That lake has the state record walleye caught out of it and has tons of smallmouth in it in addition to trout, but we can't figure out how to make em bite! Guess going more than once a year might help. We have tentative plans to take a camping/fishing trip to Stonewall Jackson Lake sometime this summer to see if it is decent. Hope you guys are catching something!

I dressed and had the wifey fry me 6 fish, last night. 4 big cats and two Crappie. I freeze my fish as I catch em and then thaw them to dress em. Something about freezing them keeps em from tasting too fishy. I had read that technique somewhere.

About that drum fish, I guess if you cut in front of their brain at the top of the head, you will locate two fossil shell looking structures which the fish vibrates to ward off or warn against danger. These are the fish's "drums"

Took the wife fishing for about 4-5 hrs yesterday. The fish wernt really biting in our usual holes. We had about 5 different baits to choose from but only caught several small bluegill, some hybrids, and one cat. The weather is just perfict with no wind and comfortable temps. Hope our luck is better today.

Just got back from another fishing weekend and it wasn't a bust at all.
yesterday, we kept two Bass and a Crappie. Today, we kept one Bass and a Blue Cat. I had one blue cat on the line a good deal bigger than this one but got him to within two ft of my net and the line broke. He would have been the biggest cat that I have ever caught.
The wifey gets excited when we go fishing and she whipped me again as the only one here that is mine is the larger Bass.

Nice looking fish.  Was fishing a couple of fridays ago for walleyes.  Was trolling at night with crankbaits, we caught 2 rock bass, 6 smallmouths, and 2 walleyes, one was around 5 pounds.  Planning on heading back up this friday if the weather holds.

Well yesterday was the second day
Of Our vacation and the first time we went fishing on this trip. At first it seemed that only the bluegill were biting but after trying two or three different holes, we settled on one where the crappie were hitting more often than usual.
I think we were down there for 4 hrs and came up the hill with 8 crappie and 1 largemouth bass all of which bit on minnows. If we have this much luck all week, we may have to pick up a cooler just to take em home.

Tamer, I sent you a pic or two to your home email."like the avitar, by the way"

They were not biting as well thisnafternoon but we did catch a couple more including a 12plus inch crappie which is the biggest crappie that we have ever caught there.

Thanks for posing all of those pics buddy. We worked on the stairwell so much, we only got a chance to go fishing 4 times. All total, we brought home 14 crappie and a Large mouth bass. That last time, I caught a good sized crappie to go with the one that the wife had caught three days before. Now that we are home, our freezer is just full of fish to capacity. I am going to put out a bag to thaw tonight so that I can fry em up tomorrow.

Went out this morning and did my first ice fishing trip for this year.  There's about 8 inches of ice, so we had to walk out.  Didn't get a bite saw a few sunfish on the camera, but they showed no interest in our bait.  I would have thought with the big storm coming they would have been snapping, but such was not the case.

Just got back from our first fishing trip to truman lake. Total tally is 32 crappie and 1 large mouth bass or 40 to 50 lbs of fish as some of em were of good size. The biggest crappie was around 15 inches.

Here are some shots of friday's catch.

nice catch Clint! last time i went fishing the only thing i caught was a cold and the ocean claimed my fold out chair as the wind took it over the pier,  it was in the family for 30+ years and lost about $25 worth of squid tackle,
lets just say that was the last time i ever went fishing, that was about 8 years ago.... pmsl

I used to fish loads aswell but that was in local areas on bream most of the time.
Loved to feel a 2kg one struggling to not get caught.
then we used to take pictures and carefully put 'm back in the water without harming them
good times, good times

Looks good to me. Looks like we all better get used to freshwater fish as seafood is gonna take a major price hike because of the oil spill.

I had a blast this past weekend going to a fishing derby with my little girl. She caught so many fish she got a tackle box. Great thing was she caught three nice trout and I grilled those puppies up over a real fire in an oven bag with some vidala onions and butter and they were finger licking good!

On another fishing note, I am going on a fishing trip from Saturday till Wednesday of next week. I hope to catch my first striper and fill this place up with pics!

Comon, Shawn, lets see those pics............

I went to the lake this weekend and thought I was going to get skunked. Thursday, it took hours to get three legal crappie, fri- nothing, sat- nothing, sunday, I invited my new girlfriend and her boy to go fishing with me and I was afraid it was going to be a bust and..............we caught 16 crappie and 3 bass this morning.
Funny thing about one of the bass, I had started in an open area and wasnt having much luck so I left a pole there with a minnow and bobber for about 30 min. I had moved to another area of the dock with the other two and was pulling smaller but legal crappie out and heard this slide-splash sound. I asked the girlfriend what that was and she yellled that my other pole was in the water floating about 6 ft from the dock. I used a net of my stepdad's with a 7 ft pole to retrieve my fishing pole and when I started to reel it in, this whopper bass was on.

He ended up being 19 1/2 inches long and weighed in between 4 1/2 and 5 lbs. I carved him up when I got home and got some nice steaks out of him. Heck, this guy could make a meal for two or three people.

Wow, that is some story there Clint. You are lucky you got your pole back, let alone with the fish on it.

Any fishing pics I put up in my blog. I should have put em up here I guess.

Well me and my gals went to a fishing derby over the weekend. My little gal limited out in two hours and won second place in her age group. Yepper, she knows her way around the end of a fishing pole. I must also admit, and I am sorry if I gross anyone out, that she was elbow deep into the entrails when I was cleaning them for dinner later.

I grilled them with all in aluminum foil and dabbed em with butter, red and white onions, old bay and lemon pepper the later very generously. They came out spectacular. Served with a baked potatoe on the side it was a great dinner.

She caught five and that was one of the smaller ones. I was pretty proud of her. I really didn't have to help her much and she can cast a full size fishing pole. I bought her a purple zebco 33 for her derby.

Here are a couple of pics from the trip to the lake last weekend. The water is up and the fishing was a bit hit and miss. We ended up bringing home 17 crappie, the largest being about 11 3/4 inches long.

also showing a pic of Evan, my girlfriend's grandbaby who is a future fisherman.

Well, the season is winding down at the folks lake cabin in Warsaw, Mo. As you can see, fall has sprung and after more than a month of crappy fishing, I finally caught three keeper crappie today.

Nope, I will take some next weekend as Sharon always catches at least one blue cat. He was about 16-18 inches long.

well, i believe that this was our last weekend at the cabin"sniff"
I will miss going down there. as a proper tribute, we caught two fish this morning. Sharon caught this 13 1/2 inch bass and I caught a 11 inch crappie.

Funny story. We fish using minnows for bait. Sometimes they fly off of your hook as you cast. Sharon had made a cast and her minnow flew off. as she was reeling in her baitless hook in disgust, that fat bass latched on and hooked itself. That made her day.
