Hey Krztfr, firstly let me just say this is an excellent project and not the easiest undertaking by any means. You've got a great start on it! I always loved that swoop trooper and his swoop, tho the neck joint on mine eventually became loose :(

As for fixing your helmet sizing issues, your first option would be to dremel the helmet deeper to accommodate the head. Or you could sand the head down and repaint it. Another option would be to go with your Joe head, cut a small, thin plastic rectangle about a 3rd of a centimeter, and wrap it inside the opening of the head. Glue it horizontally wrapping it into the "bell" of the head. This way it'll act as a buffer to make the space to receive the neck tighter. I use that trick all the time, works great :)

Another option still would be to find a better fitting head if you have enough heads to look through. The 2 heads you have are nice because they sport the balaclava that probably the swooper would wear under his helmet, as most stormies do.

And if you don't want the helmet to come off, you could cut the stormtrooper head down (probably lop off a bit of the crown of the head, sand it) and glue it into the Swoop helmet and use another un-helmeted head when you want him to take off the helmet. Thus having two heads. I use this trick too.

Hope that helps!

Thanx Actionfigempire I thought about the "cheat" and making two seperate heads one helmeted and one nonhelmet but I really want to try to make helmet usuable as much as possible....

Good work there mate! My next Shadows Of the Empire update is also a Swoop and rider (I'm going for a more 'Bandit' look rather than a trooper though!

Love what you're doing so far! have you taken the (rubbish) rocket launcher of the swoop to replace it with something else? I've used a pair og Joe backpacks as saddle bas on mine!

Really good to see another "Shadows" customizer on here  ;D

All the best,

Ray

WOW excellent project!  I'm so glad someone else is doing torso swaps with joes.

What torso are you using for the lower half?  It's probably not fitting very flush into the chest joint, and is why your getting that gap.  I would suggest looking for other suitable lower torsos.
One I have tried using in the past for the storm trooper chest is the lower half of a Rise of Cobra Viper.

imho the figure looks good, but the lower torso you've used looks a little long for the figure, making him kind of lanky and tall...  but, it might be the best fitting joint that you'll find for that chest half.

as for the head, that is super simple.

I think AFE was a bit confused, thinking that the ball was too small for the joe head...  where your problem is actually the opposite.

The socket of the GI-JOE heads are all uniform, and much smaller than most star wars ball joints.

How good are you with a dremel? (I'm assuming pretty good since you hollowed out that swoop rider helmet!)

What you'll need to do is take your dremel and carefully hollow out the ball socket on the gi-joe head until it fits over the ball joint of the star wars neck.  Make sense?

can't wait to see this project completed.  Great job!

what the dremel master said! :)

and don't forget you can use hot glue or sticky tak to fill the new hole you drill in the head if you make it a little too big.
I use sticky tak and it helps make the joint tight but keeps full motion, plus no burned fingers.
and there's also a bit that Dremel Co. makes that is the exact same size as the GIJOE ball, so you can easily do the opposite of what you're trying to do, like drill out heads to fit the JOE size socket.

Looking great! can't wait to see it finished.  This was one of my favorite figures back in the day, and also one of my first customs (luke skywalker head on the Swoop body)

Thanks for the encouragement guys...

WB: I can't wait to see yours I'm diffinately stealing your ideas on Dash and Luke...

Spuda: I actually used your videos to start this project so in a way you inspired me to start....As for the dremel that helmet is this first and only time I hollowed anything out I just made sure to take it slow and check often however I don't feel comfortable hollowing it any more than that, but I figured I would have to hollow the gijoe head out also. As for the body yea its the only one closest I could find and I thought the same "tall and lanky" thanks for the tips.

That is exactly the torso I was picturing!  Spot on.  It doesn't look nearly as lanky and tall now.  Idk about fixing the leaning issues though, That might be an issue with how it is fitting together.  I took my sander and sanded down the lower half on one of mine to get a more loose fitting joint and allow the movement to be a little better...

I'm glad that my tutorials helped you out!

WOW, that helmet hollowing out was your first attempt!  That's impressive!  I botched the first one I ever did!

Hi again!

Some great work you've got going in here! I used the Gree forearms as I made my Luke from leftovers! The original clone arms were on a Jedi figure that I had made earlier!

Looking at it now though I do prefer the Gree hands on the Luke!

BTW I'm flattered that you've used the same recipe, and I can't wait to see more of your work!

Cheers again,

Ray

My only problem is painting...my brush work isnt that great. Any tips before I begin would be great
Title: Re: My Wip
Post by: spudafett on January 19, 2012, 01:02:33 PM
Go slow with your paintwork.  Don't rush it.  Try not to touch the figure too soon after painting it, that's always my mistake.  I try to rush it, start painting the next layer or color before the first application is dry and wind up covering it in fingerprints!

Make sure you are using Acrylic paint and NOT enamels.  Enamel paints are ok for plastic models, but will not cure correctly on action figures.
Title: Re: My Wip
Post by: ActionFigEmpire on January 19, 2012, 04:09:19 PM
Good tips Spuda! Yes model paints like Testor's are known to have a "never dry" effect on the plastics Hasbro uses. They can remain tacky or even sticky, and are instantly full of finger prints. Acrylics are the way to go. Get some good versatile brushes. Use the finer tipped brushes with soft bristles for detailing, use large brush heads for general coating or large flat surfaces like on vehicles. I highly highly recommend using Citadel Paints. They're water based acrylics, very forgiving and come in the most unique colors. They do amazing metallic pigments too. They're what I prefer. One of their jars gets me through about 20-30 figures and some small vehicles or dioramas.

Another great thing to remember is addition and reduction work.

Addition= apply paint in coats/colors. i.e. your figure has a black jump suit, so you start by painting all the jump suit surfaces black. It doesn't matter if you get some black on other parts like his armor because those are going to be silver. After the black has dried you go in and add the silver to his armor pieces: chest, shoulders, knees, etc. Then it's time for

Subtraction= so you got some silver on the jump suit areas. No big deal. You take your finest (smallest head) detail brush, and subtract the silver out with some black. This is known as the "touch up" phase of your paint applications. Addition and subtraction work great for detailed figures or vehicles. It's a technique used by most model makers and table top gamers. From my Warhammer days we used to paint figures in batches. Start by priming them all black. Then painting the armor pieces red. Then the do the trim in blue. Etc. Etc. Until each piece is finished.

With Citadel paints you can even pop your figure appart, paint each piece individually to get a very meticulous and even paint job. Then boil the pieces (see Spuda's tutorial on the Boil-and-pop method) and pop them back together. This gives you a flawless coverage of paint. Citadel paints are water solluable (they wash off your hands, clothes, etc.) but once they're dry on a hard surface they are water proof, so you can boil them and not have your paint wash away.

Another handy trick is to sand certain pieces to get a porous surface to really grab the paint. This makes it that much harder for your paint to chip or flake.

One last tip comes from my days in the 501st Legion, and that's what they call the "50 foot rule". Essentially, how will your piece look from the standard viewing distance? As for the 501st 50 feet is what they consider event/parade distance. For action figures I'd say 2 feet is how people will normally see them on your shelves. For photos it'll be much closer. Ask yourself, "Will people see any unpainted surfaces? Will my weathering look as good from 2 feet as it will from 5 inches away?" and other things like that. I personally paint the backs of knees, under armor, the bottom rims of helmets, etc. so that all the little details are 100% relative to the custom.

Also take a look at your figures, Hasbro cuts a lot of corners with their painting. Sometimes it's the wrong color, it's only painted on one side, or they leave bare plastic where there should be paint. I have a Baron Fel figure that has exposed flesh toned plastic on the edges of his black gloves. They also don't always get the paint in the right spots.

Hope this helps :)

Great tips AFE!  Superb ideas.

I wouldn't sand any areas that your afraid to loose detail on however....

Also, giving any figure a good primer coat of flatt black or even a proper primer grey or white is a good way to get a uniform paint surface.  Plan ahead.  If the majority of the figure will be black, or a dark color, use black to prime the figure...  if the majority of the figure will be a lighter color, use white or grey.

Primer is usually alot thicker than other paint, so you may have issues with joints rubbing if you use primer PLUS paint on top of it.  If your going to do any sanding down of your figure, around the joints is where you might want to hit with a bit of sandpaper.  Loosen up the joints slightly with sanding, then paint them and that should take care of any rubbing issues.

Scratch building is different from sculpting. Though technically I guess it's a form of sculpting. Basically you find a suitable head, then find a piece to use as the visor things he wears, and then paint it. Scratch building=using pre-existing items/bits to create a totally unique item.

So this is a very easy quick (and kinda lazy?) custom, I took a GI Joe Airtight and I thought he looked like a starpilots body so I swapped the head with a GI Joe SciFi. I'm not going to repaint it cuz I liked the factory colors and it works for Star Wars.(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6816736858_7bd3ee6839.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/57753623@N08/6816736858/)

And for the nay sayers that it doesn't work for Star Wars I have him in Rebel pilot helmets to show it works...

Had time to waste so I tried some more boiling and popping

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8443/7791663992_c6d1aab3e7.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/57753623@N08/7791663992/)

Also I was hoping when they redid the Tusken Raider it would be articulated but I was disappointed at the cheap swivel elbows so I fixed it

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8436/7791663800_91883411a9.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/57753623@N08/7791663800/)

Now I need help, how do I go about making all of these old and new parts fit together? The shoulder socket is too small for the holes in the torso, and how to attach the CW Mace waist to the torso? And any way to make the original hands to become attached with wrist articulation?

You need to get a blade/x-acto knife/razor and trim the studs.  I have just clipped a 1/4 - 1/3 of the edge.  Don't make the stud shorter.  Maybe run it under hot water for some flexibility and shove it in.  Let me know.

Ok need help from the custom kings here...how do I go about getting the arm to fit the torso? Also adding the lower waist to he torso? I would love to hear some ideas cuz the ones I have I don't want to try yet incase I ruin the figure.

For the waist the peg fits but its small enough to slide out so I need to anchor it in and still twist if possible

The arm issue I'm having you can see the size difference....I can slide the arm in and out of the socket

Wish I had seen this sooner. What I do is coat the small parts ball or swivel joint in vasaline. Put hot glue inside the hole that is too large. Insert your part then go run cold water over it to cool it super quick. Then start rotating the part while still pushing in so it stays bottomed out on the shoulder hole. This way the hot glue will not stick to the arm. This process makes for a perfect tight joint. drilling into hardened glue makes for a weak loose fit and the arm can fall out over time. Good luck!

Its cools you were enjoying Orlando, but I heard about the vasaline and hot glue for heads so I was wondering if it could work for other joints thanks for verifying it

I just picked up a bottle of gloss black from Testor's Model Masters Acryl Line.  It is the BEST gloss black I've ever used.  I normally use Citadel paints, although I also recently picked up a couple of Master Series Paints (MSP) bottles from Reaper.  They are good also and they come in dropper bottles, which is ingenious.

Finally a completed project from me lol. This is the first figure I painted after i put on a coat of dullcoat the joints still rub paint off so I need to figure that out.
This is basically my idea of a heavy class of armor I always thought Boba wore the light version and Jango the medium version.
These guys would be the last stand guys or the one man tanks, they would be too heavy for the standard jetpack so instead they have personal shield generators on one arm and the other would have a triple rocket launcher with three modes 1. shoot them off one at a time, 2. shoot them off together, or 3. self destruct.

Also I was looking at the helmet that came with the generic gi joe soldier and was wondering if it makes a good StarWars helmet it seems to be designed to be more of a Halo style. Well I painted it and it looks like a start of another project...

Soon to be SWTOR inspired Scout Trooper

You know, man. I think the color scheme you use will do the most for giving him the Old Republic look. That red orange always says Old Republic to me. The base figure looks fine.
This guy might have a head sculpt that will do you. http://starwarsgeek.ecrater.com/

I got the mechanic worked out on these bodies but I need advice on detail work (mostly straight lines) or maybe on brush work also...I'm just not happy with it but not quitting on it. also how do you make it glossy or maybe just not so flat?  And just for Tamer I'm making a TOR driver to go with my AT-CT.

If you want it to look shiny you can buy super glue that is spread on with a brush, and that gives a really nice glossy finish! That's what I usually use, and  it works great. Plus, it protects all if your paint work.

Yes it is...just not happy with the available parts to make this. And painting looks to be a pain. When is Hasbro repacking this figure? Really playing with the idea to try to concentrate and to do this Sithfire30 style but I don't have much experience sculpting. And just for Tamer I'm working on a couple of Old Republic Walker Drivers for my AT-CT's, problem is no source material so gonna have to make one up like I did with Old Republic Biker Scout.

It was literally sithfire that inspired me to start sculpting.  I stumbled upon his work before I started coming to any of the forums, and that's what got me started.  It was very rough in the beginning, as I didn't know what I was doing, and literally every single thing I did was wrong.  I started using super sculpy and cheap paints.  I didn't know at the time techniques like dry brushing, washing, etc.

Anyway, point of the story.....you don't need to know how to sculpt, just have the desire to give it a try and be patient with the knowledge that it's not easy, but with patience and practice, you'll be loving what you put out.

Hey bud your stuff looks great to me!
It's funny because I'm opposite in my thinking on Fix-It. I find it a little tedious to work with. Make sure you let it sit for a while before you begin working with it. Watch the CAFN episodes with sithfire30 in them he gives a good play by play of how to work with Fix-It. I think it was E71 but he is in E72 as well.
I use Fix-It for odd things like bulking-out, some armor and it makes a pretty good glue too. To me it's like working with hard, chewed bubble gum it sticks to almost everything so dip your tools in water. I like to roll it out on wax paper because I can pick up the paper and easily peel it off.

I like Sculpey Firm but if you're using regular Sculpey flesh color that's just fine too. Sculpey if great to use. It's not sticky, it shapes and holds it's form quite well and it works well with metal wax tools. You can fire it and let it cool and add to it and fire it again. I like to fire it at 265 instead of the recommended 275 and cook it for half the time that's advised To smooth it out get some Sculpey Softener and smooth it before firing. I always take a soft, small paint brush and give the piece a light coat all over and let it sit for a few days. You'll notice it drying up and when it's completely dry and you feel good about it cook it.

Now I never use Sculpey on a finished piece. I'll take the original Sculpey piece, let's say a head, and mold it with silicone rubber and cast it in plastic. Comes out great every time. So while you're waiting on the delivery guy give the Sculpey another try. Hey that rhymes.

Well I got almost all the part figured out however I can't figure out how to keep the shoulder bells but change the arms? Because my lack of 6" parts I can't do the iconic no sleeve look but I can do the toy long sleeve version. Any suggestions on keeping the shoulder bells but not the arms? Also the head is big on this figure I hope adding the padding on the shoulders will even it out. I also need to dremel the inside of torso to get the lower and upper together so he will lose some higth.

Dash looks awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing how he turns out. If it means anything, Dash is my favorite smuggler  :)

The Stormtrooper armor is actually a great idea, I literally said out-loud "That actually works" haha. I hope everything works out cause this would be a fantastic custom. It's a shame we never got an updated Dash. Sadly we're stuck with the POTF figure and unfortunately that type of figure customization is out of my league.

Thanx Tamer but until I can figure out arms this is as far as I can go right now. I know Hemble combined Solos arms with the Trooper shoulders on a past custom but I dont know how or if it could work seeing how he makes them statues

Did you see the work he has done on some of the trooper figures with colored balloons? I can sure understand about wanting to keep the movement in em though.

Tamer, I know what your talking about but I dont think it would help but thanx.
I did shave the torso to fit and i fixed the arm just going to have to do the long sleeve version like the hasbro toy. Hopefully by the weekend i will have pix. I have sculpty 3 but i heard it cracks in time so i might have to put it on hold until i get some aves fixit sculpt unless someone wants to donate some to me lol.

Dash looks fantastic.  Looking forward to seeing it completed.

One thing you might try (and I have no idea if this will work) would be to buy one of the 6 inch wrestler figures and see if you can use their arms.  Then I would just cut off the shoulder pads from the star wars figure and glue them on top of the shoulders of the wrestler arms.  That'd give you the bare arms look you are after... IF they fit right, and that's a big if....

Spud thanks man i already thought about the wrestling figures and a few have  decent sized arms but I didnt want to buy a figure for just biceps so i used what i already got just now i gotta replace the tie pilot in my collection as i sacraficed him. Besides the toy had long sleeves as well as a few other pictures of him. Infact its hard to find different pics of him and not notice so many differences between each.

So I watched this DIY prop video the other week
index=5&list=PLUUGFk1wE5OHBnwRKxqDWTL3DgrfoiRmr and i thought to myself I wonder if I could do an eyebot from the Fallout games like that? So with a hot glue gun, a ping pong ball, a spool of wire, and some dollar store earbuds I made this... I know the wires coming off the sides are bent I just figured being in a post apocaliptic area they shouldn't be straight. (https://flic.kr/p/FAti1q)

Title: Re: Complete 1:12 scale Sith Acolyte
Post by: krztfr on January 24, 2017, 08:39:33 PM
I made a Sith Acolyte based on the SWTOR Decieved and Hope trailers. Recipe: His body is one of the Nolan Batman toys I picked up at Goodwill. I shaved the ears and face down, sculpted mask (first time and with Sculpey III) he has Darth Mauls soft goods skirt as well as the cloak and rubber belt. The control pieces on the gauntlets are the mouth/nose pieces from the Hasbro 6 inch Biker Scout.

Weapon: I gave him a scratch built saber from styrene tubing, and the blade was salvaged off of a Star Wars Unleashed DarthVader statue that was too bent to keep.

I get why Hasbro went with a straight repaint for an exclusive figure but it bothered me enough to make a game accurate version of Versio. And after playing Battlefront 2 it really put my into gear. Young Man Jolee Bindo:

Ever since I seen the Marvel Legends Mordo figure from the Dr. Strange movie I always thought his clothes would work for an Old Republic era jedi, then on closer inspection he looked more like a younger version of Jolee Bindo to me so I sculpted on facial hair and made a custom lightsaber.

Surprised Hasbro hasn't done this character as simple as it would be for a rerelease, specially on the retro cards.

Nice! Just a tip, if you want this more transluce colors to be brighter, or darker you can base coat the 1st layer with white (to make it brighter) or black. Also helps to make a fadding effect if you want.

It was a great surprise when I saw your OOM-9 custom yesterday! Was on my way across the country so I only got to comment this morning. Still need to finish mine (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10186.msg210182#msg210182).

I think your OOM droid looks awesome! Great tip from BlackThorne as well. I especially like the detail on the E-5 blaster. It's mind boggling that we haven't seen any OOM units from Hasbro in more than a decade! Still keep my hopes up for a Security and Pilot which we haven't seen since 2007 and 2013.

So you write retro Droid. Do you mean the 12" figure by Hasbro? First, I thought it was the TVC one, but telling by the sculpt it's the TPM 12" one, right?

Thank you, I didn't think of the TBS one anymore. I think the yellow deco looks very good on this one. I would trust Hasbro that they release the three OOM-versions in The Black Series before TVC (if at all) even though it's been a decade. But to be fair the Commander, Pilot and Security Droids will be character debuts in The Black Series and that's something I'm looking forward to.
Thanks for sharing some droid/CIS action, which I'm a big fan of!
