Title: old Restoration topic
Post by: Wookie-Balls on October 26, 2011, 05:17:05 AM
Hi all!

I've started this thread to document my ongoing project to restore and recard my Vintage Kenner Star Wars figures.

Now this project will be unpopular with some Vintage Collectors. Why? Well, a lot of them hate figures having 'paint touch ups,' reproduction weapons are despised by a large number and as for repro cards? They might as well be spawned by the devil himself!!

The problem is a lot of unscrupulous folk are restoring and recarding figures and selling them on various sites claiming that they are original toys. This is without a doubt dishonest, wrong and criminal.

Now here's my viewpoint... These are my figures from my childhood (bar a few exceptions.) These figures are not for sale (and never will be.) The cards are marked on the rear as repros (as are weapons where applicable!)

These toys gave me a lot of enjoyment as a child - and I felt a little sad when I rediscovered them somewhat battered and dusty in my garage.

I decided to spruce them up - fixing paint rubs where appropriate. Then I decided to mount a few of them on reproduction cards - this then became a quest to restore all my vintage figures and replacing the ones that were beyond repair! Why the cards? Well I had a fair bit of wall space in my den and my vintage ships are, ahem, crewed by my modern figures. So the reproduction cards doubled as a nice wall mounting scheme!

Each figure that I restore will be posted individually on here to document the figure, paint restoration (if any,)  weapon origin and carding.

As I said before these figures will never be for sale - however if the worst were to happen and I was burgled then at least each item will be documented here!

Any questions please ask away. One last point of note- I am not a producer of repro weapons or cards/bubbles. Nor do I sell any of them.

Thanks for looking!!

Ray

This Biker Scout belonged to me as a child. I was given him for Christmas as a child (whilst living in Australia.)

Restoration work includes a chemical bath to restore the yellowed white armour and some black touch ups.

The ROTJ Kenner card, bubble and blaster are all reproduction. Note this figure does not have an 'insert tray' which the original would have done. The Scout is the common variant - not the 'short mouth' version.

I bought this Bespin Luke in a job lot of Lukes. As he was my favourite character all of my Luke figures are pretty battered!! I have cleaned them up but they are not of a standard worth recarding.

This figure has had some minor black touch ups to the belt and saber. The blaster is original vintage. The Kenner ESB card, bubble, footer and saber are reproduction. The saber is moulded in yellow plastic as opposed to painted as per some repros.

The figure is the dark hair variant - the same as I owned as a child.

I never owned an AT-AT Commander as a child - strange as I did have the AT-AT and Driver!!

This figure has no paint restoration work. The blaster is genuine, from my own collection. The ESB Kennner card, bubble and footer are all reproduction.

I believe that this figure came with a pale or fleshy face. This is the latter version.

Wow, I love that AT-AT Commander, it looks factory case fresh as do the others.

Daggone, I used to have a friend named Trooper Larry who did some neat recarding, but this looks just as sweet to me.

I have some original figures I would love to see recarded too. I might just have to drop you a pm.

On the front page.

Hey Tamer! Thanks for the FP!

Thought of you earlier as I restored and recarded an AT-AT Driver :D

He'll be in my next update...

One for Tamer! I received an AT-AT Driver back in Christmas 1980 or 81 along with the vehicle.

Sadly my driver is yellowed beyond repair and has a club foot (after my toddler sister introduced him to our fire!)

I picked up this figure for a song! He needed some VERY minor white paint touch ups. The blaster rifle is my original one.

The Kenner ESB card, footer and bubble are all reproduction. He's now on the Den wall with his Commander!

This Hoth Stormie is another one of my childhood originals. He was either normally found in the belly of my AT-AT or attempting to retake my Imperial Attack Base from those dastardly rebels!

Over time he became yellowed and rubbed. He received the same chemical bath as my Biker Scout and had his black paint retouched where required.

The Blaster rifle is original, but the kama, Kenner ESB card, footer and bubble are all repro. I think he looks pretty good these days!

Now this Jedi Luke is another of my original figures.

He is the "Pale Painted Face" variant. He has had the paintwork on his nose and hand touched up. The saber and cloak are genuine vintage. However the palace blaster, bubble and Tri Logo card are all reproduction.

As a note of interest Tri Logo vintage figures weapons were not taped to the bubble - just packed loose inside.

I loved this figure so much that I bought a second with my pocket money! Who could resist a Luke figure so cool that he came with THREE accessories?

I now own four vintage Jedi Lukes - one of all three major variants and my second 'Pale Face.'

This B-Wing Pilot was bought out of my pocket money in Manly, Australia soon after Jedi was released!

As a kid I loved having another rebel pilot to go with my X-Wing Luke.

The paint work on his chest, helmet and hands needed retouching. Also the Endor blaster, bubble and Trilogo card are all reproductions.

Sadly those little Endor blasters were so easy to lose!!

My own Darth Vader is long lost in the mists of time. Capeless and saber-less like so many others he's probably in an Australian landfill site as we speak.

This one however came as a surprise addition to a battered old Tie Interceptor that I picked up to restore!

The cape is original, but the saber, card, footer and bubble are all reproduction.

The saber is moulded in the correct colour plastic, not painted as is the case with some repros.

Ok now we have the original small head Han Solo.

This figure is one of my own. His hair was rather worn and had to be repainted in places. As did his white shirt.

The blaster, 12 Back card, bubble and footer are all reproduction.

Of all of my restored figures this Han is on of my favourites.

Thanks for sharing this awesome project with us! I say as long as you say up front they are are repros, what is the problem? I would love to have a set like this for my collection! You are doing a wonderful job recarding these! Are you also doing the card backs or are they blank?

Hey Clint & Luke

Glad you guys like the project. I figure that being upfront re restoration is the main thing - and these are not destined to appear on the market. I just wanted to give a little back to the toys that entertained me for HOURS as a kid!!

@ Luke - yes the cards are backed too (you can also see the annotation I made re reproduction pieces.) Here's an Empire cardback

I've also managed to get a beat up Imperial Troop Transporter to use as a donor for my (even more) beat up one from 79! I plan to crew it with six restored vintage Stormies, a Death Squad Commander and an Imperial Commander!! :D

I've already restored a near junk X-Wing and Tie Interceptor already...

Wow, what I wouldn't give to have a few of the vintage figures I have done up this way. I think you are just doing an oustanding job and they look so nice recarded. Expect to see me pick some of these to feature from time to time.

Here's my original Ben Kenobi - this figure was pretty bare when I dug him out of storage. The paint on his hands needed retouching.

The cape is a reproduction (and a pretty lame one) however I do now have a original one with a slight rip that I may use if I decide to recard him again!

The saber is another nicely moulded blue plastic reproduction - I wasn't keen on the painted ones.

The 12 back card, footer and bubble are all reproduction.

This is the 'white hair' version of this figure.

My X-Wing Luke is currently piloting his restored fighter in the Den! He was pretty worn and I bought this replacement from a well known auction site

He needed some minor black and white paint work.

The blaster is one of my originals. The 21 back card, bubble and footer and all reproduction pieces.

Again I'm pretty happy with this one...

Tamer, CH, Luke Spry - I'm glad that some of you are enjoying this project too. I've just bought an uncirculated POTF Han Carbonite coin to restore one of the last figures that I ever bought, so look out for him in the future!

you know...no matter what TVC figure Hasbro comes out with, nothing reminds me of my childhood star wars days more then the old (vintage) figures.....you have brought back memories of playing star wars in the front yard with my tie fighter zooming around the deathstar (our big tree) and pretending the back yard was Tatooine and searching for the droids....keep em up

Hey Spooky and BR - glad to have you on board! I'm also glad that your enjoying the memories that seeing these restored figures brings back - the same happened to me when I had completed the first couple!

He needed paint touch ups to his nose, teeth and bandoleer. The Bow Caster is reproduction as are the card, footer and bubble. More rebels to follow!!

As I've said before, most of my original Luke figures are pretty worn , so this Farm Boy Luke is one that I purchased from the net.

He needed some paint touch ups on his hair and legs and the tip of his saber was missing. I replaced the saber with a yellow moulded plastic reproduction.

The 12 Back card, bubble and footer are all reproduction as well.

This is the "Yellow Hair" common variant - the same as my original figure, both dark hair and orange hair versions also exist!

Here's a piece that I'm proud of! Leia was one of my first figures and sadly she didn't make it through the years!

I bought this Leia cheaply as she was slightly yellowed, had no accessories and had paint rubs to her hands. However it appeared that her head was in great condition.

I bleached her in a chemical bath, touched up the paintwork on her hands and added a reproduction cape! Even the blaster had to be resprayed the correct colour!!

Obviously the bubble, card and footer are also reproduction.

I love the way this figure looks now that she has been restored...hope you do too!

Wow, Leia sure doesn't look yellowed there.

I would love to see a Tube video sometime of this process. It would just be an awesome resource to see you go from start to finish covering all the details.

I would love to interview you sometime for custom action figure news to get this process out to the masses.
Title: Re: Wookie-Balls Vintage Kenner Restoration Project
Post by: Wookie-Balls on November 03, 2011, 08:38:40 AM
Hi again Shawn & BR!

The process is pretty simple - I use a 35% Food grade Hydrogen Peroxide with a dash of "Oxy Wash Vanish" (a UK laundry stain remover) as a catalyst. Then the figures are placed in the chemical bath in a sealed clear glass jar and left in direct sunlight for a few days (whilst I monitor their progress.)

I can't take the credit for this process - a chap on a vintage SW forum shared it with me. It is similar to the "retrobright" process used by some videogame collectors. Some folks have concerns about the long term effect on the figures and the possibility of people selling bleached figures on without telling prospective buyers.

I have noticed no ill effects over the last few months on any of the figures that I have treated. I've just ordered six vintage Stormtroopers to crew my Imperial Troop Transporter - So I'll photograph the process if anyone is interested?

All the best

Tamer

That sounds awesome! These stormies have just arrived at my address. They have had an initial hot wash in boiling water with washing up liquids. This can sometimes brighten up dull , minutely yellowed figures.

Some of them had dirt encrusted in them that required gentle removal with a toothbrush.

They aren't too bad - I'd say that the worst two have mild yellowing and the others have pretty minor yellowing. The next step will be to bleach them in my 35%  food grade peroxide for a couple of days!

Tamer, these guys won't be recarded as they are going to be crewing my Imperial Troop Transporter! However I will cover recarding in this thread too and if you are happy for me to weblink my suppliers then I will add their details too :D

Later this month I shall be recarding a POTF Luke Stormtrooper and ESB Kenner Dengar, Bossk, 4LOM and Zuckuss.

I use two suppliers of reproduction cards / bubbles / footers. I have two main sources of reproduction blasters, genuine POTF coins and parts. I have another chap that I buy my replacement stickers from. I source my 35% peroxide from a seller on EBay.

More pics and details to follow!!

Hey there OP :D

The figures (Stormies, Hoth Stormies, Biker Scout and Leia) that I've treated haven't had their paint effected. However I couldn't vouch for those with more delicate details (AT AT Driver.)  I know for example that some GI Joe collectors have had mixed results with the Cobra decal on Storm Shadow lightening in some some cases.

I've only had to touch up the paint on my figures that was already rubbed prior to bleaching. Also all of the figures that I've treated have been predominately white plastic with minor paint apps on top.

Regards

Ray :D

Ok to make this a more 'encompassing' process I've decided that I will card one of these stormies.  That way you'll get to see the whole process from start to finish!

Here's "Trooper Doofer" reporting for duty. My first step is to boiling some hot water and dishing washing liquid on the stove.

Poor Doofer gets dropped in this boiling solution and is then gently scrubbed with and old toothbrush to remove dirt and grime...

Next step is fairly simple, good old Doofer  meets his home for the next few days...I use this 35% food grade peroxide that I buy from EBay UK. You can probably pick it up from stores too. Be sure to get the clear liquid though and not any of the white cream based peroxides. A clean Jam Jar will suffice for the bleaching process.

Now fill the jar with the peroxide - add a dash of laundry stain remover and then whack in your trooper! BE CAREFULL this stuff isn't pleasant on bare skin and can melt whatever is leaks out on (hence the old bowl here.) Now it isn't that sunny in the UK at the moment - also I've had to add water to my peroxide as I was running low, so poor old Trooper Doofer is going to be in this jar for a few days!! Remember to place your jar in DIRECT sunlight folks  ;D

Keep an eye on your figures - and get them out when nice and minty. Remember to be careful though that peroxide is still nasty!!

See you in a few days!!

WB

Ok the trooper has had a few days bubbling away in the chemical bath. Fish him out carefully to avoid getting the peroxide on you fingers and give him a dunk in some clear cool water, thn dry him off. You should be able to see a good difference in him...

Next step is the paint touch up - on a Stormie it should be fairly minor - other than the hands. I use humbrol acrylic paints...

Ok here we have the restored Trooper Doofer reporting for duty!!

And here's a comparison shot with an untreated, slightly yellowed trooper. I've noticed since cleaning Doofer up that at some point in his life he has had a run in with a puppy - he has the tell tale bite marks on his left foot!! In the next update we will look at reproduction cards and weapons. I'll also link to my trusted suppliers in case anyone else fancies restoring their cherished, but battered old toys!

All the best,

I'm glad that you guys are still enjoying this thread! Whilst I wait for my card and other bits to arrive I thought that I would share an unexpected success with you...

As I've said countless times before, I'm a total Luke fanboy. All my childhood Luke figs are pretty worn and with the exception of my Luke Stormie & one Jedi Knight I've had to replace them all for my recarded collection.

My Farmboy Luke was really yellowed, loose limbed and had serious large scale paint rubs. I thought that he was only fit to remain hidden forever in a drawer. As I was bleaching Stormies, I thought "what the heck!" and whacked him in the jar too. I was pretty amazed at the result a few days later...

What you see below is a major restoration - all paint work has been majorly touched up or totally redone - including the hands, legs, belt, hair, throat and eyes! A hot wash followed by cold water limb compression has addressed the loose limbs. All he is missing is a replacement saber, which has been ordered. I think that he looks good enough to card!

As I've rediscovered a Imperial Troop Transporter head restraint I think that I'll display him with the vehicle and my imperial crew!!

WB out! :D

Ok guys here we go with the final
Section of my Vintage Stormtrooper Restoration Project...

My Resto-Kit from Spain has arrived, as has my reproduction blaster and we're ready to crack on!

As the kit is from Costablanca Star Wars it already has the double sided tape attached to the bubble, however I've needed to add tape to the footer and and stick it into the bubble

Check the positioning of any weapons or other goodies, I use 12back.com for this. As this is a first issue restoration the blaster shoul be in the Stormies hand. Next we place Doofer on the card and line everything up before removing the tape backing on the bubble. Then carefully lift the bubble and remove the tape backing...
Title: Re: Wookie-Balls Vintage Kenner Restoration Project
Post by: Wookie-Balls on November 19, 2011, 04:41:12 AM
Now gently drop the bubble into the card, making sure that all taped edges touch the card at the same time!

Press the glued edges down with your finger at first, then use a rounded blunt item like a knife handle to ensure that the seal is tight and has no air bubbles!

Now Trooper Doofer is cleaned, restored and recarded! Your work is done.

Now you can sit back, have a glass of wine and enjoy the fruits of your labours!

Thanks for following my work here - I hope that you've enjoyed it and found it informative. Please remember though that restoration of your old toys can be rewarding but NEVER sell items like Trooper Doofer here as original - that's dishonest, illegal and immoral...  ;D

Thanks again, WB

Now in the next day or so I'll be listing all my trusted sources of restoration parts, inc cards, figures, weapons, stickers and tape. But in the mean time here's a few that Ive completed this morning :D :D

Now most of these bar Bossk and Fett are my childhood toys, with original parts. My old figs had had the usual cleaning and minor paint touch-ups.

Fett however is very interesting!! I bought him before the recent Hasbro reissue. This figure is a custom-made repro of the original L-Slotted rocket firing Fett that I found on EBay!! I totally love this reproduction figure... All cards are from Nathan at Costablanca Star Wars...

Thanks again

Ray

Guys - thanks so much for the positive feedback. I hope that some of you too will perhaps show those battered toys of old a bit of love too. They don't belong hidden in a loft or drawer!

Anyways here's what I've been up to today....

Here's a few pics of my restored, vintage Imperial Troop Transporter. This was my first vehicle, I think my parents bought it for me  in 1978!

All I had left was pretty much the upper body, pods, gun turret, radio mount, wheels and a lower chassis (missing the rear door.)

The doors, battery cover, radar dish and lower chassis all had to be replaced. And as my vehicle was yellowed to heck - I also needed a respray and new stickers!

eBay provided a donor vehicle and Derek @ Fed-50 on the UK site sold me the replacement stickers. I went with Tamiya Grey Haze for my paint and off we go!!

Sadly the electrics are kaput (as were those on the donor) the vehicle stripped down easily enough. I even managed to add my old wheels to the donor chassis!

When cleaning out the loft the other day I even found one of the old head restraints - I heated it up and bent it back into shape, resprayed and restickered it too!

The Stormies still need their black paintwork touched-up. The repro blasters are from www.reproparts.net

The troop transport is my favourite Star Wars vehicle and you really have shown it some love! unfortunately mine has seen two custom repaints and a severe playing with by my kids, so it's now in a very sorry state.

I don't recall ever seeing someone return a vehicle to it's former glory and you have done a wonderful job. I love seeing all the classic Star Wars toys as well!

This is a gem of a thread...More please!

Hey guys - I'm trapped in a hotel in Brussels due to work at the mo, but I wanted to thank Tamer for the FP again!

@ H94 - thanks a lot matey! Mine was in the most awful state when I found her in the loft!

I've been a bit busy with my Clones at the moment however my next two restoration figures will be a POTF Luke in Combat Poncho and ESB Yoda. I'm trying a new card supplier for these two figures so I'll let you know how they pan out!!

Botwt, sorry man I thought that I'd already replied to your question. I use this

http://www.tapes-direct.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=139_170&products_id=1108

Super strength clear double sided tape to secure the bubbles - however my usual supplier of restokits on eBay supplies his bubbles pretaped for ease!

Guys thanks for the continued support and enthusiasm and in the mean time here's a Death Squad Commander - again one of my toys from bak in the day, complete with paint restoration, repro blaster and repro 12 back card...

Very nice work, those stormtroopers turned out very well, its kinda funny that the Sun, which caused the yellowing in the first place , is needed and is the prime ingredient to activate the Peroxide, and return the figure back to white. Well done.

@ Smeagol - Now there's an idea for a custom!

@ M4K3R1 - ironic isn't it? :D I like how they turned out though!!

@ Botwt - you're welcome mate. That particular tape is super strong and perfect for bubble fixing!

Now here's my set of restored Hoth Rebels. Only The Soldier and Commander are my original figures, Han & Leia went AWOL over the years and my Luke looks like a whole pack of Wampas got to him!

The weapons belonging to Han, Luke and the Soldier are all original, whilst the other two are reproduction. All packaging is reproduction, and most of the figures have had minor paint restoration work completed, enjoy!

Hey Tamer - glad you like 'em!!  ;D

Hey all!

First off, I hope you all had a great holiday! Here's my first update for 2012...

This POTF Luke Skywalker in Battle Poncho is an original figure, poncho and belt. The blaster is repro as is the excellent packaging by Beggars Canyon Toys.

The coin is an original POTF one, however the BCT POTF restokits do come complete with an awesome one sided repro coin...

Next up is an old favourite of mine - Yoda. My figure has long since vanished in the dusts of time! I bought this chap on the net. The snake and gimmer stick are repro. The belt and cape are original and the figure required some minor paint touch ups.

Once again the excellent card, bubble and footer are from BCT...these guys are really pushing the envelope as far as vintage SW restoration  goes!

Over the next few months I'll be restoring about another 25 to 30 of my old figures, hope that you'll still be following!

Well here's an update (of sorts!)

I'm awaiting the arrival of my next order of restokits from BeggarsCanyonToys. Doug has informed me that they are improving the quality of their (already brilliant) kits. Next up from me will be

>>Luke Stormtrooper disguise  POTF
>> A-Wing pilot POTF
>> Lando General POTF
>> Princess Leia SW 12 Back
>> Ben Kenobi SW 12 Back
>> Death Squad Commander SW 12 Back
>> Boba Fett ESB
>> Tie fighter pilot ESB
>> Imperial Commander ESB
>> Emperors Guard ROTJ
>> Luke Jedi outfit ROTJ
>> ATST Driver ROTJ

Three of these restorations will be for our very own Tamer! I'll update again once they arrive and I start to make progress!

Thanks for your continued interest!

Hey y'all!

Ray here - I've been real busy the last couple of weeks but I finally had a chance to restore and recard a few more of my old figures! They're already up in on the den wall, but here's a peak!

Most of the figs were mine as a child, they've needed some paint touch ups here and there and some of the weapons are reproduction pieces...

However the cape, blaster and saber with my childhood Jedi Luke here are all genuine vintage items. This was my favourite figure as a kid - I know have four! Lol

The ATST driver and Emp Guard are both my original figures too. However the blaster and pile are repro...

Now here's my top three from this session... The Luke Stormie is my childhood toy - the blaster is genuine but sadly the helmet is repro.

The Lando General and A-Wing pilot are both EBay purchases and the blasters are reproduction pieces.

I almost forgot to add that all of my POTF coins are original - even though the Beggars Canyon Cards come with great repros!!

Hope you enjoyed the figures...

Hi gang!

Glad that you like the latest updates! I love those POTF figs too, I need an imperial gunner to finish off my Imp collection - meh.

Ok here's something a little different - these figs belong to a good friend of ours...

Boba needs the most work, Ben need a clean down and some paint rubs / fading touched up and Leia needs some very minor paintwork and some large scale de-yellowing...

Ben was nice and easy to work on - and was sorted pretty quickly! Here he is on a nice BCT reproduction 12 Back...

Leia is bubbling away as we speak. Boba has had a deep clean, then I had to undercoat his chest armour before painting and varnishing it. I was pretty worried about this figure's restoration but I think so far, so good...

Anyway I'll see you all in a day or two with hopefully two more carded figures...

If you can believe it the Leia was my wife's when she was very little. That Boba, if you can't tell, was one of my favorite childhood figures. Ray seeing him pristine again is bringing a tear to this old guy's eye. Absolutely fabulous. Ol Ben wasn't too neglected or played with, but daggone he looks awesome on his new cardback. Ray, I owe you one. This is exceeding my expectations times a thousand. Thank you is not enough, I will have to think of something.

Time to take this update to the front page. Its weird how happy somethings make me. This one has me very smiling from ear to ear.

LE - glad you're still enjoying the project mate! Sadly though I've only got about another 12 figures left from my childhood collection then I'm done...unless of course I go for a full 92...

Thanks again guys   ;D

Glad you like them both Tamer - I'm really happy with what I've managed to do with Boba...

LE the dots of red you mentioned are localized plastic discoloration spots that have happened over the years. I found it really hard to get a colour match to the base blue of Boba - and using as close as I could get I covered the worst ones.

However I had to make the choice to leave a couple of spots so I didn't end up with either a patchwork effect or like he'd been drybrushed  >:(

I used a mixture of acrylic paints on him - and hand mixed colours to try and match the original paint apps...In total I used

Revell "Sand (matt)"
Revell "Leather brown (matt)"
Vallejo Game Color "Dark Fleshtone"
Vallejo Game Color "Goblin Green"
Vallejo Game Color "Bloody Red"
Vallejo Game Color  "Ultramarine Blue"
Humbrol Acrylic "Black"
Humbrol Acrylic "white"
Citadel Colour "Gloss Varnish"

I went for a brush applied gloss varnish as I've had problems with spraypainted figures reacting badly once recarded - someting to do with  a solvent reaction?

Thanks again for the feedback & support guys!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

I couldn't help myself...Mrs B is watching the England vs Wales rugby (Being a Scot neither holds too much interest for me!!  ;D )

So I went to the den, got out my restoration kit and this is what happened...

I must say Boba Fett has probably been the most satisfying of all of the restoration work that I've done. When I first opened Tamer's parcel and looked at Boba I didn't know how much I'd be able to do. When he told me that the figure was a childhood favourite and that I should just, "Try and do what I can" to help the little chap I just knew I'd have to dig further than I have on any other figure restoration.

Granted he is not perfect - however I hope that he feels a little happier in his new home...

Let's raise a glass to our childhood memories! "SLAINTE!!!"

Wow Ray. I didn't expect any of them to be finished so soon. I just figured perhaps a few months down the road if you were ever in between projects or what not. Boba looks absolutely brilliant. I didn't even think you could do half to him what you have. I am not sure I have ever trashed a figure as much as I did this one and you restored him to his original, if not better, form. You sir should be restoring vintage toys for a living!

Thank you again, and I will definitely raise my glass to such superb art. Bravo.

Today in the post I received SIX!! AT-AT drivers (I wonder who they are for?)
A super minty Imperial Gunner and coin
The parts to almost finish my Hoth Imperial Attack Base
The parts to complete my childhood Bib Fortuna
A super minty Anakin Skywalker (sadly no coin)
And the first of my Fetts!

Even better still - I've just secured a vintage Probot to complete my other Hoth Kenner playset!! Now if I could only find a Tauntaun saddle and reins...

Also I'm going to try something new on this restoration - a couple of the drivers have lost their helmet insignia. I'm going to buy some water slide decal paper to see us I can recreate them! (fingers crossed!)

LOL. I am sure they could never guess who sent those drivers, but love the look of the Hoth Playset. Wish they would release another one. Wow, we are in for some great recarding fun. Can't wait to see what you do with all of them. Are you going to try a new Boba Cardback with some of those or just go TESB?

Shawn I plan to have two mini runs in my recard / restored collection.

The first will be "Luke Jedi" and comprise of

1. Pale face Luke on Kenner ROTJ card
2. Moulded face Luke on custom Kenner "Sailbarge" card (with blue saber)
3. Flesh face Luke on Trilogo ROTJ card
4. Pale face Luke on POTF card with coin

The second will be a run of Boba comprising of

1. Boba on Kenner Star Wars card (first appearance)
2. Boba on Kenner ESB Card
3. Boba on Palitoy ESB Card
4. Boba on Kenner ROTJ card
5. Boba (Pale variant) on Trilogo ROTJ card
6. Boba on Droids card with coin.

I know that more cards exist - but I still have other figures to restore too. BTW I have a spare Death Squad Commander (12back) kit sitting here if you want to do a whole Imperial Forces run yourself??     BKS

Hey all...

Sorry for the lack of updates - I've been in Europe due to work. I've had little time to do any more restorations - however I have been working on my old Hoth toys...

Here's the main two - the Imperial Attack Base and the Turret & Probot set...

Both have had the plastic cleaned up and since this picture was taken I've completed the Attack Base and found a Probot!! However I'm still lacking the post on which he sits...

I've also managed to pick up a hose and box for my childhood vintage tripod laser cannon!

However the biggest news is that I'm currently looking at attempting to produce my own replacement vintage parts / weapons and stickers for the old Kenner Toys. (I'll leave the modern stuff for experts like Clint!!)

I've just ordered some moulding supplies - so stay tuned for updates. I'm going to start with smaller parts then see how I go. For example I'd love to be able to do vintage X-Wing canopies and save some of those old junkers out there...

I've been starting some minor work on your drivers too :)

Thanks re the feedback on the Hoth wips! The Attack base is now once again complete an the Probot set 99%. late last night in a fit of pique I put in a half serious bid on a nice looking vintage Snowspeeder - to my surprise I won the bloody thing!! nothing remains of my childhood one so it looks like my modern Zev version will be heading to the bay!! :)

Seem to be having a real run on ESB items at the moment!!

Well first up is my vintage Snowspeeder - this baby is in great condition and only set me back about $18 inc postage!! just need a harpoon and one engine for her...

And here is the first photo of my casting prototypes!! The Endor rifle and helmet  didn't make it (problem with my moulds more than anything else!) so here we go....I'm going to have make a new mould for the Stormie helmet too as the sprue ended up in the wrong place. Also the paint apps of the helmet are very rushed - more of a test to check the liquid plastic would take the paint...

Clint if I use just the right amount of liquid plastic then 90% of the paper thin flashing can be gently torn off by hand & the rest can be shaved away with a scapel :)

The stuff I'm using cures very quickly in the moulds so I'm having to work fast when pouring.

It's getting Hoth in here...  ;)

This is the first time that I have had a complete playset. In 1983 as a 7 year old kid walking to school in Manly, Australia I spotted this playset (minus Probot and post) dumped by someone's trash! Now as an avid Star Wars fan I couldn't leave it there so after a milliseconds thought I nabbed it and saved it from the dump. The rescued playset was featured in many of my childhood battles over the following years.

Fast forward to 2012 and thanks to the power of the Internet I've managed to buy both a Probot and thanks to another collector I've even found the missing post that the droid sits on! Complete at last :)

I've also found the last lever to complete my Hoth Imperial Attack Base so finally this one is also complete - however I've got 2/3rds of a second spare one as well now!

And finally... I've developed a real thing for Kenner Minirigs at the moment... I've recently tracked down a vintage box and hose for my childhood tripod cannon and I still want to buy another three ESB era minirigs. And of course I still need a couple of parts for the snowspeeder. I think that once I've got my display room / vintage gaming den / converted garage up and running I'll have a full on vintage Hoth diorama in there somewhere!

More soon...

Hey Tamer!

I'm holding off on a video as my collection is outgrowing the bunker - I'm hoping to have my garage converted during the summer into a full on man cave, it'll house my SW stuff, vintage gaming gear, transformers and a mini gym!!

I've just secured the last of my vintage SW for the the next three weeks or so. I won a genuine Luke Jedi blue saber, a green one, two palace blasters, various other guns and parts and two (!) MTV-7 mini rigs (the funny ESB ones with wheels on spring-loaded legs.)

The cards I've ordered should allow me not only to complete Tamers six drivers but also three Jedi Lukes, an Emporer,  three Boba Fetts, and POTF Anakin and Imp Gunner!! Now if only they would arrive!!

Wow, I like the sound of you expanding your room! I bet it will be cool.

I also like the sound of you getting in the supplies for those six driver. Oh, that reminds me I either need to send you some starcases to protect that vintage goodness or either have you buy some over there and reimburse you cause I would be heartbroken if they didn't arrive in the shape you have pictured. My posties are awful.

Anyhow, pm incoming, as I need to get you paid for those carding supplies anyhow. I appreciate you letting me join your restoration project  a bit. I am so jonesing now for some hoth playsets.

Hey y'all !!

Finally got a day off and the paints out!! Here's what I've been up to...

Here's the first of the six Walker Drivers that I'm restoring for Tamer - this chap needed a moderate amount of paint touch ups and general cleaning. He is going to be recarded onto a UK Palitoy restoration card.

And here's number 2 in the group. This guy needed quite a bit of paint work, and is the awkward lighter grey colour which is a PITA to match! I had to hand finish the rubs of his helmet decals too. He has been mounted on a Europe Trilogo ROTJ card...

That's all for the moment - I'm waiting on LOTS of card kits arriving from the US before I can crack on with my next run...thanks for reading

Hey Pack Rat - the podcast is a good place to start with the HP bath process and my restoration work in general.

From page 3 of this thread there is a pictoral guide to de-yellowing vintage figures :)

I was 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide. The time in the bath depends on the amount of yellowing / amount of sunlight you get - there is no exact science just keep an eye on it. Hoth Luke was in there for 2 1/2 days :)

DO - Glad you like the restoration so far - you wait til they are all done!!

Ok folks here we go again! I've already stated numerous times that The vintage Kenner Luke Jedi is my favourite figure. As a kid the power of Luke suddenly appearing in black with a gloved hand sent us into speculation overdrive prior to the release of Jedi! I plan to have a run of four restored Luke Jedi figures in my collection and here's the next one!

This is a Taiwan 'moulded face Luke' (as opposed to the two painted face variations.) he has been mounted with a palace blaster,  blue lightsaber and cape. All of the accessories are genuine vintage pieces.

The cardback is a custom BCT sailbarge alternative card - and a very nice one too! It comes complete with bubble and insert tray (behind which is the cape.)

More soon!

Thanks guys!

Glad you like your POTF Walker Drive Tamer! And yes Mando I still have my childhood Tusken and at some point I will restore him too!

Just back from the MK collector mania - not the greatest selection of vintage toys this year :(

However I did pick up another complete loose Luke Jedi which now means I'll have four carded versions to finish my mini run - I'll update soon with pics :)

Well as promised, here's the last two Luke Jedi variants for my run of four...

A POTF flesh faced Luke and on of my original childhood pale face Lukes on a Trilogo card. Both have had minor paint restoration and all accessories (bar the coin) are genuine vintage pieces!

I may be tempted to do one more Jedi Luke as I have a loose figure with blaster and blue saber left over - just need a cloak!

I Agree! There's plenty of great vintage figures in the 92 - but most of the rarer (and therefore expensive) last 17 leave me pretty cold. Even as a kid I wasn't too bothered by Ewoks and monsters from Jabbas Palace! I'd still like a Pop-Up Saber Artoo at some point  though!

I'm torn between finding the last ones I want for my carded collection and the figures I what for my vintage Hoth diorama! :)

Title: Re: Wookie-Balls Vintage Kenner Restoration Project **MASSIVE UPDATE**
Post by: Wookie-Balls on June 04, 2012, 08:05:47 AM
Ok folks, here we go with a massive update...

First off here's that group of Fetts after I repainted the chest armour - althoughin this pic I haven't applied the varnish yet :)

In this second photo I've painted the helmets, chest armour and belts. The pale Boba is a 'Trilogo' version.

Next up are pics of two of the Fetts mounted on cards, the first is the unreleased POTC card with a repro coin, and the second is a lovely 'Droids' card. The blaster with this figure is one of my own casts!

I also restored and carded these two mates as well...

And here is something rather nice... These two required quite a bit of paintwork and cleaning...

And here is how they ended up!

You're more than welcome Shawn. I've ordered some water slide decal paper to finish the last driver (he had no helmet insignia left and was pretty yellowed / beaten up.) Once he's done (Polish Bootleg card) I'll get all your figures shipped back to you!!

I've also got a Trilogo card on the way for my pale Boba Fett :) think that I only have 20 figures in my collection to recard. I've also got five Hoth stormies to restore for my vintage Hoth diorama...

Thanks for your continued support of my niche, little project!

Thanks Botwt - that's really kind of you mate :)

And here we go - the moment that Shawn has been waiting for...

The last of his Vintage Kenner AT-AT Drivers has been restored and recarded. This one was the moest beaten up of the lot and he was also suffered from yellowing and missing Helmet decals - so what did I do?

The first step was a good long soak in the Hydrogen Peroxide bath to lighten him up a bit.  Step two was to touch up the paint and step three? Well I decided to make some helmet decals myself! I found an online image of the actual Imp insignia, scaed it down and made them into red and black water decals. This version of the insignia is actually far more accurate than the version on the Kenner toy...  :D

Next up I decided to use my custom black decals on this figure as he was to be mounted on a Polish 'bootleg' style card...

And here he is mounted on said card...

And finally here's a group shot of all the figures that I've completed for Tamer

1 x Kenner ESB AT-AT Driver
1 x Palitoy ESB AT-AT Driver
1 x Kenner POTF AT-AT Driver
1 x Kenner ROTJ AT-AT Driver
1 x Trilogo ROTJ AT-AT Driver
1 x Polish Bootleg AT-AT Driver
1 x Kenner 12 Back Leia
1 x Kenner 12 Back Obi-Wan
1 x Kenner ESB Boba Fett
1 x Kenner 12 Back Death Squad Commander (A freebie as Tamer is such a good customer!)

Now I've just got to get these bad boys back to the US!

Thanks again for reading...

Ray

Ray, I am utterly speechless to describe how great I think these are. And new decals to boot, how cool is that! That bootleg looks fantastic and I do think you may have created every single vintage rendition of the Driver that was made. I am seriously pleased with these and am crossing my fingers that we can get these shipped back across the big pond. I leave that in your capable hands, but please accept my thanks for a job that has far exceeded any expectations I had. You ought to be working at this for a living. Of course I am taking this to the front page, if my internet connection holds out. Just brilliant.

Thanks Art, those are some really kind words :-)

Work rumbles on and post vacation I've been thrown into the thick of it, however I do plan to carry on with my restorations and a large scale project - that I've dreamed of since childhood...

A Vintage Hoth Diorama

For this I'll be using both of my Kenner Hoth Playsets and as many of the ESB Hoth figures and vehicles that I can muster! My aim is to eventually have a Dio for each of the three original movies on display in my renovated garage (when I finally get the work done!)

My first aim is to build my "Imperial Invasion Force."

All figures will be hand restored, by myself and I will be taking on 'beaters' where I can find them for pennies and utilising them in this project! I'm looking at

5 x Hoth Stormies
2 x AT-AT Drivers
1 x AT-AT Commander
1 x Darth Vader
1 x Imperial Commander
1 x Probot (on playset)

1 x AT-AT Walker
1 x Tripod Laser Cannon
2 x MTV-7 minirig
1 x INT-4 minirig

So far, so good - just 3 Hoth Stormies and the two drivers left to restore (I'm quite experienced in those now Tamer!) and I need another Vader...

Pics over the next few weeks as I crack on. Once these guys are done it'll be time to look at my Echo Base Rebel Forces!

Thanks again,

Ray

Post by: Wookie-Balls on July 13, 2012, 05:22:44 AM
Thought that you'd like that idea Shawn - however I have upgraded my plans...

Well I've decided that despite the Olympics I shall try to progress  a few restoration projects that I've been sitting on for a while...

As I'm going for a ESB run as my current project which includes my Hoth focus.

I also plan to restore my VERY battered Slave One. She will need a repaint, replacement parts and replacement stickers. And of course she will need a refurbished Boba Fett to pilot her.

I have also acquired an ESB USA battle damaged electronic X-Wing that will need a lot of TLC as well. I hope one day to display this with a Dagobah playset and figures. The stateside vintage X-Wings were different to the UK Palitoy version.

I'm hoping to start producing my own replacement vintage stickers in the near future so stay tuned for that!

So in total over the next three months I hope to compile
loose, complete, restored versions of the following :

5 x Hoth Stormies
2 x ATAT drivers
1 x ATAT Commander
1 x Imperial Commander
1 x Darth Vader
1 x ATAT Walker
1 x INT4 Minirig
2 x MTV7 Minirigs
1 x Tripod laser cannon
1 x Wampa
1 x Probot

5 x Hoth Rebels
2 x Hoth Rebel Commanders
1 x Hoth Han
1 x Hoth Luke
1 x Hoth Leia
1 x R2D2
1 x C3PO
1 x 21B
1 x FX7
2 x Tauntauns
2 x X-Wing Pilot Lukes
1 x Radar Laser Cannon
1 x MLC3 Minirig
1 x PDT8 Minirig
1 x energiser Minirig
1  x Snowspeeder
1 x Rebel Transport

1 x Imperial Attack Base Playset
1 x Turret and Probot playset

1 x ESB Battle damaged X-wing
1 x Dagobah Playset
1 x Bespin Luke
1 x Yoda
1 x R2D2
1 x Ben Kenobi
1  Darth Vader

1 x Slave 1
1 x Boba Fett
2 x Bespin Guards
4 x Imperial Stormtroopers
1 x Lobot

That looks like quite a lot of toys! I shall use my own childhood toys and wherever possible source beater figures / vehicles to restore and thus save them from landfill hell. I will also endeavour to save original parts paint/ stickers / weapons where possible and produce as many of the needed items myself!

Looking forward to bargain hunting and compiling all of these!

Thanks Tamer -

Today I made some headway into 'Project Empire.' my parents bought me Slave One back in 1980. Over the years this ship followed me about the globe (I was a military brat.) and for the last decade and a half she's sat in my loft, yellowed and missing her stickers...

Today I took her down and stripped her - you can see just how dirty and dusty the toy was...

Next every piece was hand washed in warm soapy water to remove the decades of grime and any sticker residue

Next I resprayed the outer shell of the ship with 'Light Royal Grey'

Finally I rebuilt the ship and applied just shy of 40 replacement stickers that I made...

Finally here is the restored Slave One parked in my Boba Fett area of the Wookie-Bunker. The other S1 has now been removed to make way for my childhood one...she's no longer a beater!

Thanks as always for reading

Hey guys!

Glad you like the Slave One! Pretty proud of her myself, another childhood toy repaired...

Next up? Electronic grey ESB X-Wing, I've tracked down a tinted canopy and cannons, I'll be producing replacement stickers for her too. Even though I can produce reproduction battle damaged decals I shan't be doing that for this one as my other vintage X-Wing is already sporting some!

I also need to crank out some MTV-7 Minirig stickers, some ATAT ones and a set for my old
Forest Ranger!!

I've also got my hands on a 21B, a Palitoy landspeeder,  anther Hoth rebel for my dio AND found an old Palitoy/Kenner ROTJ poster too!

It's been a good month for vintage toys!!

Here we go again!!

Here is the first of two Palitoy vehicles for you. For some reason (cost?) the UK Palitoy versions of some ANH ships were slightly different to the Kenner ones...

Take my old Palitoy X-Wing. These puppies had no electronics, so no LED in the nose or battery cover at the rear (only a sticker.)

This one was mine during childhood. It has had a total re-spray, new stickers (my own) and a replacement canopy (which cost silly money.) The S-Foils were broken so they were glued in a nice open spread. I still have some work to complete on R2...

Here we go with my other Palitoy ANH vehicle  - the Landspeeder. Again Palitoy cheaped out on us British kids - for some reason this version of the speeder didn't come with an opening bonnet (or hood for our American chums!)

This just arrived today and needs nothing other than a gentle cleaning...

Hi again!

Great times this morning - my electronic ESB vintage X-Wing arrived...

She was bare, dusty and covered in sticker residue when I opened her up.

A gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a tooth brush sorted her out. Then I applied some fresh "Wookie Decals"

Then I fitted the vintage blaster cannons and a POTF2 tinted canopy

This type of electronic X-Wing wasn't that common in the UK back in the day. In fact, not a single one of my friends owned this version, we all had the basic Palitoy ship. I was only aware of this one eve  existing as a child because of a picture in a catalogue! I've decided not to add battle damaged stickers on this ship.

Thanks as ever for popping by! Next up will be my major Y-Wing restoration...

Here's my vintage Y-Wing restoration project. I never had a Y as a kid, and I bought the POTF2 one from the US as soon as it was released in the late 90's. However I didn't like the fixed Astro, and wished that it was more like the original toy...

I bought the yellowed old vintage hulk for a song on the 'Bay. At home I had an old POTF Y-Wing that I used to supply the missing parts.

I stripped the ship down and cleaned her up. She was badly discoloured so I decided that a respray would be the way forward. I wanted to keep the original yellow paint work so I masked it off with tape.

Then I sprayed the main body of the ship.

Here's the upper body with the tape removed showing the preserved yellow paint

The POTF2 parts needed spraying to be a closer match to the original toy.

I then rebuilt the main body of the ship.

Next up was the hand cutting and replacement of almost 40 Wookie-Decals.

I added the POTF2 parts and we are almost done! However I still need some nose guns (longer on the original toy than the POTF2 version) and a bomb. I've sourced reproduction versions which are on their way from the US!

So here she is 99% complete alongside my ESB X-Wing...

Hope you enjoyed the update!

Ray, my friend, I don't think there is a thing you couldn't do to make anything vintage look case fresh. That new X-Wing is absolutely spectacular and that Y-Wing is gonna be awesome too. You have got to give the rest of us a tutorial on how you make all those great stickers. Back on the front page. [at1]

Thanks guys!! Tamer I may well start producing decals to sell to Yarders  if there is any interest???

In other news...

Oh yeah WB is happy!

I've decided to replace the majority of my POTF2 and later vehicles with vintage ones - pinching parts where necessary (like on my Y-Wing WIP.)

I was planning on picking up a vintage yellowed B-wing hulk minus blasters, stickers and canopy. Then doing a full take down and respray.

I was just narrowly outbid on such a hulk last week and a bit annoyed that I didn't push harder in my bidding...however less than 24 hours later and for about £5 more I scored this complete c8.5-9 complete one!!

Yep for about $35 inc shipping I scored this beauty!! All she needs restoration wise is a gentle cleaning and two decals restuck that have lifted slightly!! I haven't tried the electrics yet though...

Oh I'm a happy Mr Balls, now I still have a nice POTF2 one to get rid off!!

Sadly I'll never have the same luck with an A-Wing! However as the POTF mould is 99% the same as the vintage one I think a retro respray and WB replacement decals should do the trick for that little ship!!

All the best

Sneaky peak of what I'm currently working on...

I always thought that it was a bit mean of Kenner to miss out on the ROTJ Y-Wing pilot

So whilst I'm waiting for the final parts to complete my vintage Y-Wing I decided to crack on with the pilot...

I'm using a cut down Endor Commando head and a modern pilots helmet. I've removed the visor to make it look more like a vintage sculpt.

The proof of the pudding will be the paintwork. I shall be limiting myself to no more than 4 colours per area on the figure. This is an effort o match the figures of the day, so no washes or drybrushing either!

The body and arms will be donated by a beater X-Wing Luke, the legs will be courtesy of a damaged B-Wing pilot

Now heres something a little special...

The A-Wing Pilot was one of the last 17 figures and saw a limited release (he was also part of the Droids line.) As such a nice minty one can fetch a decent price.

I've already recarded a nice A-Wing pilot as part of my project I decided to try a snap up a beater and a beater I got!

"Doctor, Doctor. My A-Wing pilot has no nose."

"How does he smell?"

"Terrible"  :p

Lucky enough I had a beater B-Wing pilot who was happy to donate his hands and yes - that is a 1/18th nose on my blade!!

OK now our pilot no longer looks like he went to the same rhinoplasty clinic as Michael Jackson, that mist be the worlds smallest nose job!!!!

And here are his new hands - you can see the red plastic showing through and all the paint runs on the rest of the figure.

It took a while to mix the correct flesh tone - I think I finally did an ok job...

All of the body paint rubs have been repaired and the pilot has a new blaster too!

Now all he needs is a retro fitted POTF2 A-wing repainted to look like the vintage Droids version!!!

Thanks for looking

Well that's the build of my Y-Wing pilot sorted out. The arms are from an old X-Wing Luke. Still not really happy with the goggles, but hey.

The blaster is one of my own casts and the helmet insignia with be from my own water slide decal selection.

I'll be going for a grey flight suit with tan boots and bib. I finally have two days off from tomorrow so I hope to get him finished!

Title: Re: Wookie-Balls Vintage Kenner Restoration *Kenner Y-Wing Pilot*
Post by: Wookie-Balls on August 14, 2012, 08:34:30 AM
Well I just wasn't happy with that modern A-Wing helmet - so for about a buck plus shipping I picked up the POTF2 Arvel pilot from the old triple pilot figure pack!

This lid is a much better fit and looks far closer to a vintage piece with the visor removed - if anyone is thinking of making one of these figures then this is the helmet I'd recommend...

Next up is the base coat of light royal grey for the flight suit. The boots will be tan as will the bib. The chest pieces will be black.

I was going to two tone his boots for film accuracy but all the other vintage pilots have one colour leggings and boots so this guy will have a similar basic paint job.

Gosh it's difficult to try and emulate a vintage paintjob - washes and drybrushing can really bring a figure to life, without them you feel like your work is much more amateur!

He'll be finished in the morning, stay tuned

'The Line That Time Forgot'

I'll be customising a few figures to create Vintage Kenner looking figures of some of my favourite characters... But first, here's that Y-Wing pilot in full...

Hey Ray !!!  That Y-WING pilot is awesome . I read a comment you made about dry brushing tones and how it would be more realistic. Yes that would be true  But i have to say you went above and beyond and did a tough project by not doing the obvious realistic approach and made it how it should have looked back in the day which is a simple look .  To me that's tough enough .  I cant wait to see whats next in you're vintage  non  produced line   all the best man ... Okeday Vintage Amigos!!

Here is the first of today's double update...From 'The Line That Time Forgot' I bring you, Luke Skywalker (Endor Capture Outfit)

This is one figure I couldn't believe Kenner didn't produce back in the day. Even as a kid I knew how easy it would have been!!

The head I've used here makes this custom. It's the rarer Taiwan 'moulded face, painted hair' Jedi Luke head. The hair needed repainting.

The binders are from an AOTC pack and the green saber is a repro (until I get my hands on another vintage one.)

The body is from a Luke Skywalker (Battle Poncho) figure one of the infamous 'Last 17.' Quite a few of these still exist minus the poncho and gunbelt. To finish this custom off I've painted his belt and buckle

Thanks for stopping by!

And here we have another addition to my Rebel Fleet...

I never even saw an A-Wing toy as a kid. They came out very late in the day as part of the Droids line and fetch a hefty price these days, even loose.

However in the mid 1990s Hasbro released the A-Wing as part of the POTF2 line and I snapped one up! The ship used 99% of the same moulds as the vintage Kenner toy (including the battery compartment even though there are no electronics in the Hasbro version!!)

As my other fighters are now all vintage versions I decided to retrofit my A-Wing and convert it into the original Droids version. First off was a complete take down..

Followed by a respray in vintage colours and the application of a set of reproduction Wookiee-Decals

After a varnish and rebuild I'm really happy with her and she can rightfully  take her place in my fleet with her restored pilot...

I just need a few last parts to finish my Y-Wing, the  perhaps a White USA Kenner X-Wing for my fleet!!

I hope you like this latest addition, cheers for dropping in!

Well today the last parts to complete my vintage Kenner Y-Wing arrived, namely the front guns and bomb. I've also resprayed the POTF2 tail struts for a better match to the original toy...

I've also completed my work on the vintage Astromech as well so here's the completed, fully restored ship in all her glory complete with a custom Kenner crew!

These pics also show off the 40 repro decals that I made to complete the toy. I really enjoyed restoring this ship and I'm very happy with the results!

Next up will be a Snowspeeder with Luke and Dack, followed by a Luke and Tauntaun.

Then the next big project will be a total strip restoration of my beloved, globe trotting childhood Falcon. Complete with Han and Chewie!

Wow! I am loving your Custom Vintage Figures! They remind me of Ken Pruitt's custom work from years ago. Tomart's did a feature on him and his custom Jabba Palace. If you don't mind, here are a few pictures of his custom vintage figures that might give you some inspiration!

This article was my inspiration to get into customizing. My first custom was one of those vintage Rebel Fleet Troopers!

I absolutely LOVE your Y-Wing pilot!! The paint applications, especially the helmet, look like something Kenner would have done.

Awesome project, Ray. The real vintage line is very dear to me and I think you're doing a smashing job expanding it. That Y-Wing pilot is simply amazing.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this, very anxious to see what the future brings!

Ray, I have been gone for a while and I am trying to catch up. I LOVE THIS THREAD! I LOVE THE WORK YOU ARE DOING! I also plan to do some of the same things restoring and completing my Vintage collection. I was able to get a few things at C6. I am heading to the 1st page to read the details of de-yellowing some figures and that is where I will start.

Your latest updates are brilliant! The figures and vehicles have been shown so much love! They all took perfect! Great work Ray.

Thanks Mando - I do have my Original Falcon etc, I'll be working on it and other ships at somepoint in the future! As I stated in my modern customs thread I'm going to be taking a break for a whilr to concentrate on other things (such as the construction of my larger Wookiee Cave.) So I'll have one last hurrah on here and then it'll be goodbye for a while...

Ok guys here's the mother lode!

I got my Falcon back in 1979 for Christmas and dang I loved her! She travelled with my my entire life and was played with everywhere between the snows of Scotland, swamps of Germany and deserts of Australia. Sadly though she's in a rough old state now...

Oh yeah, she a borderline junker - missing parts, broken parts, torn stickers, bad yellowing and covered in a world's worth of dirt and grime...

Now where shall we start...
Title: Re: WB Kenner Restorations - "What a piece of junk!"
Post by: Wookie-Balls on October 17, 2012, 05:54:28 AM
Ok how about searching through the loft and garage and finding as many of the missing parts as possible? Then hitting the 'bay to get the last few...

Keen eyed readers will notice that I'm missing the Jedi training ball and arm  I have one coming, but I also need to replace the broken peg!

Here she is after the nice and easy take down

The  it's off to the tub for a scrub! It was quite sad to see all that childhood dirt come out!

Here she is stretched out and drying off - just look at the state of that battered, rumpled cardboard insert - we need to do something about that!

Title: Re: WB Kenner Restorations - "What a piece of junk!"
Post by: Wookie-Balls on October 17, 2012, 06:02:11 AM
You can see how damaged the insert has become here -

I didn't want to print out a new one - so instead I've flattened it out by means of a gentle steam ironing

Done carefully the results are quite impressive! As 99% of the stickers are being replaced due to the respray I want to keep some original details - such as this insert and the holo table sticker, eve if they are slightly worn!

Next up? Paint and stickers!

Ghost it made a horrible screeching 'battle alert' noise - truly hideous!

Here's my final repair before paint...the peg for the training remote!

I've ordered a repro arm and ball from the US which will probably take a couple of weeks to arrive... However my paint should be here for the weekend and we can really get rolling!

Well it's almost time to start work on the old girl properly! My paint has arrived and I've printed a two sets of 'Wookie-Decals.'

Why two sets? A lot a replacement stickers seem to come out rather dark - on this ship normally the roof portholes and the engines - I want this old girl to look her best! So I'll be printing a second, lighter set for those areas!

@Ghost yes I believe they all made similar noises - the motor span a plastic gear which rubbed against a piece of nylon to make the awful noise. Not sure if my motor even works anymore though!

@LE, Art and Drod Thanks lads - I hope I don't mess up this one!!!

@Mungo I'm going for a fresh on Christmas Day 1979 restoration here mate - just plain old fashioned Kenner at their best!

Rather nervous about this one for some reason - it must be the sentimental value of the toy and the large amounts of plastic to spray!

More soon,

Ray

Getting the paint on!

The radar dish and side panel have not been painted - they are there to show my original colour guide (as they had not yellowed.) the main body of the ship has been sprayed and the removable hatch is there to show how badly she had yellowed over the years!

Here we are spraying the interior of the Falcon. To conserve paint I'm trying to spray ONLY those areas that will be visible come the final build. I'm leaving the sticker residue as a placement guide for my new decals.

Cockpit with new decals and canopy

Here's some of the completed parts awaiting installation after the shell is rebuilt!

To show you how close the colour match is the canopy has not be repainted (the softer plastic does not hold the paint well) however the ramp and smuggler's floor have both been repainted!

Thanks Ghost!

I'm taking my time with this baby - just finished the top hatch. That's all the small fiddly decals completed now - just the main compartment and engines to cut and place.

I've also layered varnish over the decals to help preserve them!

Thanks Art and LE!

Another quick update on the Falcon!

I saved the original chess table decal as I wanted some facets of my childhood toy to remain (such as the worn cardboard insert)

And the gunners chair back in place!

And on the outside of the ship the blaster cannons and radar dish have also been remounted

Finally here is the outside of the restored cockpit back in place!

All I'm waiting on now is the remote and arm - once that's done I'll snap some pics with the ship crewed up!

Thanks for sticking with this project, I appreciate that a load of WIP pics aren't everyone's cup of tea!

Out of all of my restoration work so far my childhood Millenium Falcon comes out on top. She really was a beater prior to carrying out this work. Now (minus a few little marks I wanted to keep) she looks as good as she did in Christmas Morning 1979!

Hey lads,

Thanks for all the kind words and FP for the Falcon. It was a real labour of love restoring her back to her current condition.

In fact it probably would have been cheaper to buy a loose complete one - but that's not my bag. I enjoy restoring my own toys that I loved as a child - the sentimental value far outweighing the cost of the restoration! All in all I used 5 x Tamiya rattle cans and two A4 sheets of stickers - plus all of the missing Falcon parts...

I've just got my 4 year old nephew into Star Wars and he's inherited all the POTF2 stuff I collected at college but he doesn't have a Falcon, so I may well do another one for his growing collection!

Jay, Chad, Shawn and Art - thanks guys for your continued great feedback and the FPs

Roger, Ghost, Tankster and Drod - cheers guys it very kind of you all to leave such positive comments!

Spooky - that really is one of the nicest compliments that I've been paid here on ISY, especially when I take into account all the great work that is posted on here daily :)

Next up for the restoration front? Two Tauntauns with riders...

Hey chaps,

I'm glad you enjoyed the restoration of my childhood Falcon.

I've finally got my next projects lined up for the New Year, and it's the Imps  who will be getting some TLC!

I've got my hands on a beater vintage white TIE Fighter, a knackered Vader's TIE Advanced and still have my childhood ATAT and ATST to work on! Oh and I'm also going to retro fit a TIE Bomber vintage Kenner style!

So stay tuned for more and happy holidays to you all!!!

Very cool! I got the dagobah playset on my last bday for 20 bucks, I tracked down the parts on eBay an they only cost me 7 bucks, but the most difficult part to find is the round cylinder that lifts r2-d2 into the air, still looking for that one though lol. there is a guy on eBay that makes an awesome repro swamp for this set

I just need one of the circular figure bases now and the playset will be complete (thanks again Shawn!)

Oh and Remco, cheers for the feedback re my Falcon! She has pride of place on my shelf at the moment - couldn't resist digging out my stormies for that shot!!

Hey Guys!

I've just managed to get hold of the silver R2 cylinder for my Dagobah set, meaning all that's left to find is one circular figure stand. I've wanted one of these Playsets for years...

This will be truly an international project with parts coming from the UK, US and Germany to complete the playset!!!!!

And once the latest pay cheque rolls in I'll be working up some of those old tired Minirigs too - as I've completed my collection of ESB rig decal scans.

Hi WB,

Your Millennium Falcon is awesome!

During a recent clear out of my parent’s loft, my parents dug out my old Star Wars spaceships.  Talk about excited - I was over the moon! Upon opening the dusty old cardboard box my ships had for the last 25 years suffered quite badly.

In particular, the Millennium Falcon, I am however, faced with the same dilemma, it suffers from a serious case of yellowing (beyond a bath of bleach) so I am now considering a total repaint.  You mention that you re-sprayed your Falcon using Tamiya colours – I hope you don’t mind me asking but which colour did you use in the end?

I am thinking about White although, the Falcon from memory was an off-white, so any advice would be most welcome.

Many thanks in advance,

Hi Ninco

And welcome to The Yards! To simulate the vintage Kenner 'off white' I use Tamiya insignia white (AS20)about two and a half cans should do the trick.

To seal after painting I then use semi gloss clear (TS-79) about one and a half cans worked for me...

Now I didn't undercoat/prime my Falcon - I just used lots of light coats, allowing them to dry between - this stopped any paint pooling in the recessed areas.

The softer plastic of the side panels, radar dish and canopy will not take paint well, if yours are very yellowed then I would suggest placing them in a glass jar of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide (food grade) for at least 24 hours in direct sunlight, however you'll need to keep an eye on them if you do this and take care with the chemicals!

It's a risk you take when you attempt a restoration like this, but mine worked out a treat!! Best of luck,

Ray

Wow! Those cards are amazing. I had no idea someone could do that. Very impressive! BTW, I have a stormtrooper with just a bit of yellow and I read that you could bathe them to remove/fade it. Is there more information on the bath recipe?

Hi Ray,

Many thanks for the warm welcome and for the advice regarding re-painting my Falcon, greatly appreciated.

Definitely going the repaint route, since my Falcon shell has discoloured badly with horrible orange marks.  My Falcon was stored in an attic and the extremes in temperature have taken its toll.  I was torn about committing to painting the shell since it will no longer be original.  However, at present it looks really rough.  The good news, its pretty complete and the glass, sidewalls and radar not too badly discoloured; only the shell itself.

I purchased some repro decals from eBay and truth be told, they are not great, the colours  are way too dark and quite a few suffer from Moiré pattern where they have been scanned!  Therefore, I fired up Illustrator and in the process of creating my own.  Once the weather gets a bit warmer, will commence with the painting.

A great thread from start to finish, really looking forward to seeing Dagobah and Mini-Rig progress.

All the best,

Ray, that is just off the cuff!

Now to give a little background, we have been having a horrible time figuring out where that e-11 one to one replica blaster is that Ray sent me. We will just say both of our postal services have been less than stellar in all this. Thank the maker for insurance. Ray, none of that postalness was your fault my friend. Now will I send this back when it gets to me, no way!

I think it looks wonderful. What a great addition to my vintage AT-AT Drivers. Kenner should have made one!

Hey LE

Nothing so fancy I have to admit! The Door Gunner is a boil and pop  UK Palitoy Action Force figure

http://museums.leics.gov.uk/collections-on-line/GetObjectAction.do?objectKey=270001&imageIndex=0

The limbs are as you guessed from a vintage Kenner Biker Scout there was some very minor sculpting on the pelvi area. The figure will be placed on a custom vintage Kenner ESB card with a modified Zuckuss rifle!

Glad you like him matey :D  thanks for the kind words

@ Clint - I should lend you the Red Wolf torso for casting mate! Palitoy distributed Action Force and Star Wars here in the UK - it wouldn't have been too hard to cross parts over (indeed watch out for my next Snowtrooper restoration!)

In the mean time - here is the AT-AT Door Gunner's rifle

And here he is being test-placed on his custom card!

Once the rifle is dry it will be taped to the bubble, I will add a 'footer board' an seal the figure on the card, then he will be off to Shawn!

Yay! I finally get to jump in on this thread! Wookie-balls- Love evrything you've done here! You are the only "restoration" thread I've ever found. I've seen the cards available on ebay and have considered restoring a set of vintage just to have a set of carded vintage(99% of mine are open). Just need to slowly by loose figures, a few at a time.

With the restoration guys on Ebay, I'm surprised no one makes decals for the Cantina or the droid factory. My droid factory needs washed badly! I slao need to replace a few parts. Id really like to clean up all my vintage sets and put them in rubbermaid tubs intead of the old lousy voxes I have them in.

Next up from me on the vintage front is this guy...

The YPS Hoth Stormtrooper. YPS was a comic in Germany that came with a free toy. In this particular issue the toy was a Star Wars Hothtrooper!

I'm trying to add a bit of variation to my Imperial Hoth forces!

These figures came in a  poly bag with a white cape with round holes rather than slits for mounting on the figure. They also shipped with a Palitoy "Action Force" rifle rather than the standard blue Kenner version

I found this figure at a car boot sale here in the UK. This guy is slightly different to the normal Kenner/Palitoy version. He has a wider stance and the plastic is of a harder quality. He has the country of origin scarred out although be has the LFL trades (which leads me to believe that this may be a Trilogo figure rather than YPS!)

I have supplied the correct Action Fore rifle and a reproduction round hole Kama.  Next stage with be a peroxide bath to clean him up - then he will be ready to join the ranks of my Imp Army!!

Stay tuned for more!

The renowned YPS Snowtrooper, wow! I love the vintage Snowtrooper and have about 15 of them. Most of them have repro capes (kamas didn't exist yet back in the 80s), but I'm not picky about that. As long as the figures are the real deal (and they are) and are of C8-9 quality.

My absolute favourite is the Royal Guard, though. Have 13 of them or so as well :D

Hm, I'll have to make another vintage shopping run on eBay to add to the ranks!

Haha even better! Just back from the MK Collectormania show

Only made a low level purchase including a meeting the lovely Kenny Baker

But check out that top middle Hoth Stormie...

Believe it or not, I found another YPS Trooper hidden amongst a big bin of vintage figures! New to get a rifle for him though - I do however now have a spare repro YPS cape for him recently freed up!!

Has anyone come across the peroxide here in the states? I recently won an auction where I got Leia, Chewie and both versions of Han. Chewie looks great, just need to touch up his bandolier. Big head Han is almost perfect. There's a bit of wear on his hair. Small head Han will need more touch up and Leai is the worst, She has to have the bath.

I also dug out the box that I got a got a replacement Luke card in a while back. It has two Lukes. One needs minor touch up, one the torso is very yellow. So, if I can find the peroxide, they are having a bath together.

well. I finally got my peroxide today. I have a pickle jar I put Luke and Leia in, dropped in a dash of bleach and filled it with the peroxide. It's currently upside down in the back yard. I put it lid down so the sunlight will penetrate it. The jar of peroxide filled the pickle jar, so I hope I can reuse the stuff for another set of figures.

Title: Re: The Wookieballs Kenner Restoration Project - Dagobah Playset
Post by: Wookie-Balls on August 06, 2013, 01:07:53 AM
Hey y'all   ;D

A while back now I got my paws on a vintage Kenner Dagobah Playset for pennies. However, it was missing a ton of parts!

By scouring the bay and with the help of Tamer I managed to track down all of the missing parts including a new repro swamp (as the original foam tends to disintegrate!)

After a good clean with soapy hot water I started the rebuilding of the set

It cost far more to locate the missing parts than it did to buy the actual playset! Still she is complete now - more pics to follow

My parents bought me this Carbonite Han in Hong Kong back in 1984...now he is recarded along with his original coin!

This is my original 1980 Bespin Luke - he has been restored, given new hands and mounted on a POTF card with repro coin and genuine blaster and saber

That is so awesome. I really enjoyed that YPS Hoth Stormtrooper. Very cool. I also love how you have these displayed too. Just perfect. Off to share.

All of your displays are exceptional. I never thought to restoring my Kenner line. That sounds and looks as though you put countless hours into your figures. I applaud the job you've done and the dedication it required.
