Title: 2011 Prototype Mail Away Boba Fett
Post by: Tamer on October 13, 2011, 10:01:19 AM
I figured I would get in on the act for this one as I have actually opened one up and am going to share my initial thoughts about the entire aspect of this offering ,from the mailer box to the actual figure, and I hope folks will add their points to this review as well. I also hope folks won't mind if I use some of your pics, especially ones that show key points as imo you folks are much better reviewers than I.

I first want to give my impressions on the mailer box. I noticed that most of my boxes made it through ok, but did open one up that was dented and found out that the card was bent and creased in two places even though the box was not that crushed. Ofcourse if you were like Spooky and ended up with an overzealous mail person yours could show up like this:

Mine wasn't quite that bad, but still it is pretty much worthless to keep this on card and it will be the one I use for the figure review just a bit later. I was hopeful that Hasbro would have used the double mailer box again, after the issues with the last Mail Away Rocket Firing Fett, but they seem to think they can solve the card issues with a kind of cardboard insert:

Clonehead shows us the cardboard insert, but while good, it sure didn't do the job to protect the one card I had with minimal box damage. Spooky ofcourse might not have been able to do well even with the double mailer box, but would have had a better shot as there is no way I could see this figure fitting in a mailer slot being double boxed. So close Hasbro, but no cigar and you had the right fix I wish you had just stuck to it.

Now for my initial impressions on the card before I move onto the figure itself (stay tuned for that at a later date). You know me, the card and how it is presented is extremely important to a carded fellow and I do wan't to share my thoughts before we move onto the figure itself. Frankly, I will be quite disappointed if they ever move away from this vintage cardback style for any OT type figures.

Once again using Clonehead's pic you can see that it is just a great shot of the first prototype armor and it definitely fits in with the vintage theme. I wouldn't change a thing. Being a huge fan of the colors black, gray, red, and white I think the colors just pop off the card and the figure. To be honest it reminds me a lot of the colors Phatty, Hangarbay94 and I worked with doing the new site design we just switched too. I could also easily see folks re-using this card to make some custom Mandalorian cards for new customs. How many of the new Mandos we have seen for this month's Make a Custom Mando Contest would work for this!

The back of the card is also standard to what we have seen so far in the vintage line and shows a first shot of what Boba Fett looked like for the very first screen test. I wondered what image they would use, if they made it one of the previous figure shots from all the other carded Fetts we have, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was this. I think I would have liked to have seen another test screen still instead of a picture with a director or stage person in it, but once again agree it could have been worse.

We will see who beats me to the actual figure review I will try to get to sometime this week. At first glance this figure seems like it would be the ultimate base figure for any Custom Mandalorian and I would think we are going to see some great new Mando Combinations because of this. I can't wait to test the articulation and get back to you with my thoughts on if this could be the final Mando Sculpt we need. I have a feeling a few of you have already made that determination.

that image was a screen grab from a pre-production video they made of the prototype armor that was sent to Lucas for approval, it's actually a pretty cool little video...I tried finding the video to post here but the link is now dead and I cant seem to find another one...

LOL. It was finally a chance to use any SW UPC so I bet lots of folks cleared the house on their upcs as no doubt hasbro will only allow modern upcs for future mailaways.

If you ever can find that video link again I would love to watch that Spooky.

Hmm, i passed on this Mail in mostly because I'm strictly Clone Wars animated these days, but i still have a ton of 'realistic' figures, especially mandos. Is this essentially the Holiday special fett, redeco'ed? It looks interesting, like it would fit in with the mcquarrie fett. Perhaps you could snap a shot with him next to the holiday fett and mcquarrie fett for comparison (assuming you've got those two loose and were so inclined!) Thanks for sharing!

This figure is very nice, I believe it is a repaint of the Vintage Original Trilogy Collection Boba Fett With more accurate guns for the prototype. The only cosmetic issues I saw were the inclusion of the wookie braids the prototype didnt have, all the dents, and the drk gray jumpsuit he wears which should be a much lighter gray, other then that it's pretty close to the prototype, well, close enough for me anyway.

Think he's actually a repaint of the Animated Debut Boba Fett, Spooky.

hummm, to me, the helmet of that Fett doesnt look the same and the gauntlets are different, maybe the proto fet is a kitbash of the two?

if he is a repaint of the animated fett i'll be disapointed if I get one,as I disliked that figure,he is way to short and looks out of place in your collection, also didn't care for the short range finder that one had, along with a few other things.I hate when they make a figure too short,or disproportionate to the others, unless thier an ewok.

I don't think it is. I still have yet to crack open one, but to me it looks like the Vintage Fett minus a few things. I will try to compare it once I get a chance.

Title: Prototype Boba Fett Review
Post by: JediMindtrix on December 04, 2011, 11:49:49 AM
I wanted to start a figure review section of my own,and give you folks my personal thoughts on Hasbro Star Wars figures.
the first figure I will do a figure review on is TVC Prototype Boba Fett.I don't own this figure, and probably won't,for the simple reason I'm disappointed with the overall approach to him.I know you're saying, how can I give a good review on a figure i don't own.well,I've seen enough photos and other reviews to make up my mind about him, also, experience in collecting.my problems with this figure are first off is he's a repaint/repack of the animated debut fett, and I did not like that figure to begin with.the prototype fett is too short compared to the other TVC figures as far as I know based off the AD Fett,I want a Boba Fett, not a stumpy Fett.the non removeable helmet bothers me,as I just love that feature on a figure.why they would use the AD fett to use as the base is beyond me,and for such a sought after figure, you think they'd put a little more time and effort into making him as original as possible.I would only try and collect him to keep carded, because I like the cardback for the figure, the same reason I want the R5 droid from TVC.I'm not paying $10.00 for a B.A.D repack, and a figure I already own from waves back, who is so much better as you may agree then the recent attempt.I really wish Hasbro would stop using old sculpts to do newer figures.they did the same thing for the rebel pilot Wedge by using an old Luke Skywalker pilot sculpt, and he has the hole in his belt for the saber hilt to boot.to conclude,I don't recommend picking up the prototype Fett, other then keeping him carded, but that's my opinion.you folks could easily do a custom Fett, that would far exceed TVC figure in so many ways.I think I will do a custom prototype of my own, that will better suit my particular tastes, and will sometime soon.tell me what you think of TVC prototype Boba Fett,if you own him,or have just seen pictures,or other reviews of this figure, and maybe change my mind about him.keep collecting, and may the force be with you.

Topics merged JMT, there is just no way I would be able to keep this section straight with multiple review threads on the same figure.

We are all entitled to our opinions on the various figures and I thought you made some daggone fine points.

thank you Tamer.can't say I wasn't nervous about submitting a reveiw on a figure i'm sure everyone else might like, but it's how i see it.in my mind,he wasn't up to par with what I was hoping, and the figure was a bit of a let down.

Anyone else that has this in hand care to add their points to this review?

Don't forget, the time is almost up for you to send in your redemption forms.
