Title: Charity Auction for Mike Martinez (Mercury Art Studios)
Post by: Tamer on July 03, 2011, 12:30:26 PM
It seems Mike was killed by a drunk driver just last night and while I am still in shock I think the first thing we can do to marshall our energies is to start a fund for Hollie (Mike's fiance) for their little gal and their one on the way. I will handle all funds through my paypal addy:

slgroves@wildblue.net

Please donate if you can. Please message your donation with "ISY Charity Auction for Mike Martinez" and send it as a gift so paypal doesn't make its cut. We want to send as much generosity Mike's families way that we can. I can't even imagine the grief his family and fiance are going through right now and I am kind of in shock myself having just interviewd Mike with Chad for Custom Action Figure News just two days ago.

I am also starting up an auction here in this thread for a Gentle Giant Classic Bust Clone Trooper LT. This was actually going to be a surprise prize in his customs contest he was running, but it would make more sense for it to be sold and said funds go to his family. Here are pics of what this bust looks like loose, but it is brand new in the box and has never been opened. I am starting by bidding on this myself for $25.

I will donate the shipping costs for those inside the continental US, foreign bidders are much appreciated, but please understand you will also need to pick up the shipping cost when this is over (approximately one week meaning this will end July 10th). It would be preferred that the winning bidder pay via paypal (address above), but I will aslo take money order and personal check. Lets get this bid way up there for Mike's fiance and family.

Here are some in the box pics of the actual item:

Folks I know we are all a bit stunned, myself in the forefront, but lets marshall our energies into this auction for his fiance and children. They are no doubt going to sorely need these funds badly. Please also spread the word on the various forums and sites you frequent.

That's...  that's terrible to hear.  I didn't know Mike personally, but, hey, any member of the 'Yards and a fan of Star Wars is a friend of mine...  (Does that rule saying you must be over 18 to bid still go into affect, here?  I can personally guarantee I am 100% good for the money.  If it doesn't, I'd like to raise the bid to $30.)

I am happy to report I almost have a hundred dollars to send to Mike's family. Once I hit that mark I plan on sending it off in those increments. Thanks so much for your generosity. I have also had one item already donated for the next auction for this and talked about a pending idea with some other great custom folks. Stay tuned for that.

USD, I appreciate the support, and if you want to do this through your parents that is fine by me.

Does anyone else want to bid on this momc unopened LT. Clone Trooper Classics Bust?

I just wanted to note that we have sent our first hundred dollars to Hollie. I hope it is but one of many such installments.

I would also like to thank Jeditemplearchives, Yakface, Echobaseforums, and Sandtroopers for also publicly announcing our Charity Drive on their respective Sites.

Thank you once again to those who donated and lets see if we can keep this going.

Haven't been around these parts of the Galaxy for far too long. I was literally heartstruck when I read Sithfire's post on his FB account. The other day I listened to Mike's interview and only recently did I join up at EchoBase to take part in his excellent contest. I just donated to your cause, Tamer, which I believe is a beautiful gesture.

And I'd like to bid $70 on this bust.

The Force be with you, Mike, always.....

Sounds good Dillon, I will create a new thread here for donation items for those of you who want to auction off items for Mike so we can keep this thread only for bidding on the current gentle gaint bust and what new items we list. I do appreciate all of the generosity folks are showing.

Ok folks here is the new thread to announce your own ebay auctions for Mike or items you would like to donate to ISY.

http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=7006.new

Now we can keep this thread strictly for bidding on the Gentle Giant Bust that is pictured in the first post. Is anyone gonna beat Incom's bid?

Ok folks I am gonna end this auction for the dvd and send Hollie the deniro.

I actually have a mail away Fett to go next thanks to LucasClones, but I was made aware this weekend of a custom ebay auction for the same cause made by Incom. I think it would great for us to support this so I will get our next auction for Chad's great donation up after that auction is over.

Here are some pics and link for the Ebay Auction from Incom:

Custom Twi'lek Smuggler by INCOM Customs
(http://www.imperialshipyards.net/images/shawn/incomtwilek.jpg)

This just looks outstanding to me. Most of us know Incom's work though. I must admit I have already bid multiple times. I love this type of war!

I was also made aware today of a Marvel Custom called Danger that is up for auction on Ebay too. Here are some pics and the link for this auction from a customizer called Paul Speedless:

Custom Marvel Danger by Speedless Customs
(http://www.imperialshipyards.net/images/shawn/danger1.jpg)

(http://www.imperialshipyards.net/images/shawn/danger4.jpg) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280720871105)

I think this is just a marvel, no pun intended, but after researching some images of this particular Marvel Character the likeness is just uncanny. I also found this banner on said auction and thought it would be appropriate to place here. It sure makes me wish I had had more time to get to know him, but I am proud to be a part of a community that is rallying to said tragedy.

MANDALORIAN SITH

Taken from the blog:

"When Luke Sprywalker announced the Custom Sith Competition over at Imperial Shipyards this month, Dad felt it was the perfect time to pay tribute to Mike Martinez of Mercury Art Studios.  Dad will be donating his MANDALORIAN SITH entry the Mercury Art Studios Auction and the proceeds will be given to the family of Mike Martinez. Mike always created the coolest and most unique Sith custom action figures. He is known in our house as the Sith master. Dad thought of Mike when he created this action figure and tried to create a Sith custom action figure that he never saw anyone make before. Dad created this action figure from the old (head) and the new Jodo Kast action figures (forearms), a Boba Fett torso, and a Lord Maleval (everything else). He removed the chest armor from the Boba Fett and dremmeled the torso until the chest and abdomen were only as thin as the armor. He then dremmeled the front chest and abdomen of the Lord Maleval action figure and then fused Boba Fett's chest armor to the Lord Maleval with Apoxie Sculpt. Then Dad painted the action figure in colors that he saw in a Mandalorian Sith drawing that some new friends showed him on The Forcebook.

If you are interested in owning this figure, look below for the link where you will be able to bid on this action figure on ebay. Dad is going to start the bidding high so Mike's family gets the assistance they need. Dad worked about ten hours on this action figure, so whoever wins it will definitely be getting their moneys worth. Not only will the buyer be getting one cool toy, but the money will be used for a good cause.

Best of luck everyone!!"

This is just great, guys! The [ur=http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280719959884&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:ITl]Twi'lek smuggler[/url] auction is only a couple of hours away from closing and it's at $70+. I'm very proud of that, because never have I made a custom reaching such high bids, but I'm even more proud to see such an amount go to a great cause. Thanks to Tamer and any other Yarders who placed a bid on this figure!

I know Speedleescustoms from ProCustomizers. He does amazing work and has inspired me to make a Legends Wolverine, my first steps in customizing Marvel Legends figures.

I will try to get some pics up shortly, but figured we could get this started with some opening bids. I have put a opening auction price for each item and remember this thread is for bidding only. Remember, this does not include shipping, but I will try to pay for the first $10 myself for winning auctions with the agreement that the rest will be up to the winning bidder.

To bid please list the item being auctioned and your current maximum amount (please make sure it is more than the current price)

Please understand that the winning bidder (please note auction closing date) is expected to paypal the funds once said auction is complete and if the minimum bids are not exceeded then the items will be moved to ebay so we can be sure to get Holly and the kids some funds this Christmas season.

Good luck and thank you for bidding. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will try to get some good pictures up tomorrow.

Put me down for $30 for the second  non-AFA Fett!

Now thats what I am talking about! $30 it is.

Ok, so far we have high bids of $30 for both

Spry's Covenant Sith by Dirty Gloves

and the regular Vintage Mail Away Fett by Wookie Balls.

I appreciate the bids and it will keep the evil bay from getting a chunk of the proceeds. Once again, don't forget folks, I am covering the first ten dollars of shipping anywhere in the world. I would also like to thank you for spreading the word at the other places you frequent as I have had some queries today because of it.

Ok, it is time to close the auction on the AFA Graded Mail Away Fett and move that one onto ebay.

We still have three auctions up for grabs with the high bids being $30 on both Spry's Custom Sith and the regular Mail Away Fett.

The Bossk Exclusive Hallmark Ornament is up next before that one moves onto ebay as well.

Thanks to those who have bid.

Ok, its time for me to finalize a few things.

It looks to me like Dirty Gloves was the winning bidder on the Spry Custom at $30

Our final charity auction for Mike's family for this holiday season is the regular mail away Fett that is now being won by Wookie Balls at $30.

Thanks to both of you for bidding. Dirty Gloves I will be sending a pm to get your address shortly.

The first box is away to Wookie Balls (thanks WB) and I am getting ready to move two of these items to ebay while Dirty Gloves got Spry's Sith. I would like to thank all the bidders and all the kind folks who donated items. I am so surprised by the generosity that is shown here and around the web as a part of our hobby.

Speaking of said generosity, I just got a box in from Chris Smith of the Sarlaac Pit Podcast who donated a Qui Gon Jinn with Eopie (mail away promotion) and the 500th Vader (ROTS version in his control room). I am thinking I might try to make an actual Charity Auction Page as this seems to just get bigger and bigger and it would give me a place to list the ebay auctions that I start.

I am also going to work on a paypal button for the front page that will allow you to donate your own amount directly to the charity auction without bidding on anything.

Sorry it is taking me so long to sort some of these items out and I do appreciate everyone's patience.

Post by: Tamer on December 11, 2011, 05:58:32 AM
Well thanks to the generosity of the Yarders I just sent $100 to Hollie and family. Wookie Balls sent more than the price he won the auction for and paid shipping, Dirty Gloves paid, and ofcourse the generosity of the Yarders to donate their items. I went ahead and made up the difference. Thanks folks, it feels pretty good.

We should have a working donate button on the front page here in a few weeks to donate directly too.

I will have more auctions up, probably over the holidays.

How's Mike's family faring, as of late?

I have heard from Mike's mom about a few weeks ago and it seems the family is having some difficulties. She loved the idea of our current cusotm contest and has said she is even going to send us a figure or two for the contest. Out of respect for Mike and the family I will not relate the particulars.

The kind folks of the Sarlaac Pit Podcast has sent me a few items a few months back and after talking with Mike's Mom a few weeks ago I figured it was about time I got off my duff and got em listed. You gotta like folks who don't know us from Adam, but still try to support a our cause. I look forward to working with them more in the future. The pics are linked directly to the aucton and up for grads is the Special Edition 500th Darth Vader, the Mail Away Qui-Gon Jinn with Eopie, and the Bossk Limited Quanity Hallmark Ornament.

We are winding down with this and I am guessing our custom figures from this current contest that folks donate will probably be our last horah for a little while, but I do want to thank all the Yarders for their kind donations. I am so proud to be associated with all of you.

Living in the Netherlands, I find it hard to imagine how things work over there in the US. I mean, it seems really strange to me Mike's next of kin have to struggle like this. We have all kinds of government securities taking care of people who are left behind after their spouses have passed away, but in the US this is a different matter.

In this light, I'm proud to have taken part in the initial customizing event, right after Mike passed away. And to have contributed by donating for that fine Clone bust I got from Shawn.

I still remember getting the news of Mike's passing. It was during TF:DOTM, so for me that movie will always be linked to this sad news  :(

I agree Incom, we have one of the biggest deficits in the world, yet fail to care for some of our biggest needs.

Well there is one day left and the ebay auction is only a little over five bucks so far. I guess those are the breaks and times are tough now, but it saddens me to think I may pay more in shipping to send this to the winner than the winner has in bidding for it.
