Title: Sith_fire30 12/31/2012 ALIEN Update NOV 12! p21!!
Post by: sith_fire30 on April 16, 2011, 02:08:16 PM
Hey guys!

My first posting on Imperial Shipyards!! This place is blowing up!! WOW! Glad to contribute...

I have a blog update over at Sith_fire30 Creations  - http://sithfire.blogspot.com/ (http://sithfire.blogspot.com/) featuring an update on my Darth Malgus - The nemesis of Paul S. Kemp's new novel Star Wars: Deceived. If you haven't gotten your mitts on this book or the audio version, it's a must!  Also updates on my Tonnika Sister sculpts, Starkiller in Arena Combat Gear from the Force Unleashed 2 and the massive  Tsalok - The Vong Commander of the Battel of Rychel as featured in the Dark Horse comics series Star Wars: Invasion.  Also have an update on the first set of pieces I will be working on over the remainder of the year...and many more!

Be sure to stop by and become a fan of my facebook page Sith_fire30 Creations - http://on.fb.me/c34S95 (http://on.fb.me/c34S95)  for all things customs and inspirational. I also like to drop some tips and tricks every once in awhile - currently working on a how to video on molding and casting that should be posted soon.  Getting close to 500 fans - and I love every one of them LOL!

If you are unfamiliar with my work and want to see more, check out my FLICKR photostream at http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/) - I always update at least once a week so be sure to stop by.

Questions, comments..Please let me know. I'm glad to help - just to let you know that I may take a day or two to get back in touch but I will always do my best.  Also need to let everyone know that I'm not doing commissions at this time  - just too much going on right now to take the quality time needed. I will let you know on my facebook page when I will be entertaining commission requests possibly later in the year.

Talk to you soon!

Welcome to the Yards!  This is an awesome community we've got here, glad to have you onboard and sharing your customizing genius!

I'm familiar with your work: it is astounding!  I follow much of your work through other sites and am very happy to see a TFUII Starkiller getting close to completion!  Your take on Dass Jennir (Blue Harvest) is my current favorite amongst your figs, but that new Starkiller looks mighty fine too!

Looking forward to continuing to see what you've got in store in the near future!

It was great to see your article on customizing in Star Wars Insider and getting the word out about customizing is one of our primary goals. Your creations are simply jaw dropping and awe inspiring and I look forward to seeing the continued progress on these figures. Thank for you sharing them with us. I am taking at least one of them to our front page. I also think it is great that you share your tips and techniques which is also another goal here at the Shipyards. I eagerly look forward to your molding and casting tutorial and we will definitely try to get the word out about that too.

Welcome to the Yards!

I too am glad to see you've joined here.  I could spout off more of the same like in the previous posts; but it's probably getting boring by now.   :)

My burning question for you is:

What medium do you sculpt in?  Wax?  Clay?

My burning question for you is:

B.R. - Thanks and my apologies for not getting back sooner. I use primarily Aves Fixit sculpt - a two part epoxy sold by Aves studio. I also use "Azbro" wax to refine some of my sculpts, but not all the time. I actually have a very small batch of Hasbro wax that I sue for special occasions. I will cast sculpts ocassionally in wax but it's a pain to do and since I'm not mass producing anything, the epoxy serves it's purpose.

Thanks - Good question...something I've been thinking about. All my figures are characters from existing comics, novels or of course the movies and television. Haven't made any of my own yet...but that may change soon. Working on a series of characters based in the SW universe - concepts right now...I would like to make more original work.

Hey guys and gals! Thanks for the very warm welcome! Sorry I didn't reply sooner than I did - I'm seriously very busy and like I'm sure many of you can agree - it's not all about custom work everyday (wish it was)! I'm trying to make it more about toy making though - love to sculpt and paint...more sculpt than paint I guess! LOL!  Speaking of paint, I will be painting up the two Tonnika head sculpts as well as Savage Opress standard head this week.  Thanks again!

SithFire, your work is on a totally different level to anything I have seen. It's like comparing the Wright Brothers airplane to an F22 Raptor...

How you create such stunning creations is quite beyond me, are you self taught, or did you take a degree in model making / engineering?

My favourite aspect of your work has to be the head painting, the detailing is so lifelike. Is there any advice / tutorials you can impart upon us mortals?

Oh and thanks for sharing such inspirational work with us.

I came across your work a while back elsewhere online and was blown away... to be honest I looked at my tub of aves apoxie sculpt and knocked it in the garbage...  This is work at a level I could never compete with.  My biggest frustration has always been the limitation of working with pre-existing pieces and having to buy figures that work together, ultimately paying for 3-5 figures just to make one custom... and here you go, buy one figure, whittle it down to a bare skeleton of plastic joints and build that up in to pure awesomeness.

I applaud your work.  This is not customizing, this is artistry.  You are a sculptor in every sense of the word.

sorry I couldn't be specific in any of my admiration, it is all too much to take in....

I will ask a few generic questions though.
Most of your work seems to be "one-of-a-kind" pieces.  You're literally building the figure from scratch, and the only way to duplicate it would be to build another in the same process...  Have you ever attempted making casts of your work?

I know some have attempted casting entire figures, but they loose articulation in the process (something that your process retains amazingly!), so I'm thinking that only parts of your work could be cast in the normal ways....
Heads, helmets, accessories (backpacks, weapons, etc), armor...  these are things that you could duplicate...

I know... I for one would like to have a copy of mandalore the ultimate's head/helmet sculpt!

The articulation is outstanding on your models! I wish I had the material and resourses to try at this, I always loved making wood carvings and skeches with pencil that take me weeks to finish but I`ve never had the chance to do anything else besides painting, drawing, and carving.

Have you ever thought of making a rubber skin around the joints  of your figures to make it look as if it had real skin? It would make it have the same articulation while having a realistic fleshy look to it. Its something I`ve been planning on doing for some time now, but you would do it so much better.

First off, excellent job on the new updates; the Mando the Ultimate sculpt looks awesome, as does the more recent Starkiller (Arena Combat Gear)...

I was looking more closely at the joint locations on your figs and it got me thinking: do you ever get the urge to make a joint change after you've started sculpting and does the Aves Fixit allow you to boil/pop or easily make changes?

I've read some of your posts on your blog and you've addressed scrapping figs from time to time after they did not work out the way you wanted.  Are these a total scrap or is the Aves workable/durable enough to withstand more sanding/resculpting (or even boil-n-pop)?

Hangarbay! Thanks buddy! I took some classical lessons in college, worked at it as a hobby since taking additional courses when I could (along with other art forms) - Model/Toy making is just finding the right people in the business and asking questions.  The painting styles I've learned from painting courses in general, plus taking tutorials and getting inspiration from artists such as those that work at Hot Toys and sculptor (hero) Jordu Schell..as well as many others. Also books- tons of reference books!!! Painting at this scale is VERY difficult which I'm sure you'd agree- and I'm still learning.

Thank you for all the kind words!!

Get that tub of apoxie sculpt out of the garbage and get to work!!! LOL We all started somewhere - I started customizing like everyone else, simple repaints. Then I met people like Glassman and Bantha5 who inspired me to go a step further...then is was practice, practice, practice! I'm still practicing!!! I still feel I can do better - that's the attitude we all should have. Ask questions - get curious and take some chances with you sculpting. And I admit I spend several dollars at time to make the correct frame for a figure - that's just the nature of the monster I've created.

Your right my work is generally one-of-a-kind...I'm even insane enough to sculpt multiple Republic Shocktroopers, Vong and upcoming Old Republic Imperial Troopers.  I am talking with some guys "in th know" about how to begin casting  future work...possibly...I will keep you all in the loop.

You ask any toy industry sculptor out there and they will tell you that wax sculpting iis the only way to go becuae of just this reason. FIXIT isn't as forgiving - for me, if I need to make an adjustment, I will try to samd down but most of the time I will break down and begin again...a small areas mind you - not the entire piece. Sometimes I scrap entire figures, others I pick points on the frame that need adjustment. Since this is a one-of-a-kind and not manufactured for industry piece I can get away with it. I use the FIXIT for it's strength and permanence as a hobby...In the toy biz - that's a no no.

The sculpts on these heads are over the top. We have needed the Tonnika Sisters for years imo and you are really doing them so well. As always tips and tricks are much appreciated. Look for this update on our fp soon.

This is just remarkable work Sith_fire30. Like a renaissance artist you sculpt and paint in ways that just blow everyone's minds, and if I don't get my degree in paleantology, then this would be what I want to do. Seeing your latest update makes me want to get back to finishing some of the sculpted pieces that  have been waiting for me to tend to.  I can't thank you enough for inspiring me to take up sculpting. Since I started I have grown to enjoy customizing a lot more than I did when I was just doing repaints and kitbashes.  You brought a whole side of myself that I never knew existed and I can't thank you enough.  Sculpting has made the customizing process a much more creative process and has allowed me to enjoy customizing beyond just feeling like an involved father, but getting to feel what it is like to have some creative expression back in my life.  Your work is truly inspiring.

In my next sculpting project I am going to attempt to implement your whittling technique on a figure and then build up from a skeleton so I can get the proportions I want the piece to have.

Thanks again for your inspiring work!

Thanks for joining the Yards! You should be working for Hasbro. Whoever their top sculptor is could become your personal assistant.

These are breathtaking. Knowing how small these figures are you are working almost at nano scale on the eyes and eye makeup, yet the detailing looks as if it's life size, applied by a make up artist.

I would love to see your tool kit, or a face painting tutorial.

You are inspiring us all!

Sith Fire, seriously, are these painted faces free of Photoshop alteration??? not that it matters, but the detailing on the eyes is perfect, I even see some iris colouration...

You know HB....I get that question asked a lot. No photoshop alteration at all....in terms of adding to the features of the actual sculpt and paint work. What you see exists as the painted work and not from digital manipulation. Those iris' have been carefully painted using a very fine brush, a strong magification, a dab of clear gloss and plenty of do overs!!! LOL! I never get it the way I want it the first time...trial and error. My style of photgraphy was inspired by the marketing photography McFarlane toys did over the past serveral years...Adding filters to create atmosphere or a blur to create a dramatic effect have been staples in most of my work. I view a portion of my custom work to be that of the photography...and if I had more time to devote to photo novels i'd be all over it.  I love photography...it's been a hobby of mine for quite awhile and am happy to incorporate it with these little creations :)

I never met the man personally but we shared many ideas and he had some great things coming down the pike..he was killed by a drunk driver last week before the holiday. Mike was a big supporter of the custom community, and had some awesome talent - if you knew him or purchased work from him and wish to pay your respects or offer a small donation to help the family, all the info you need is listed at the bottom of my latest blog entry, or Tamer has all the info right here for you - just give him a PM.  Hate to sound like a PSA announcement but don't drink and drive guys - look at what can happen.

Malgus looks terrific; nice integration of available parts (i.e. Sidious' hood) with the new sculpt.

I love the new blaster rifles for the NR shock troopers; they are almost spot-on the same as what is seen in the comics.  Awesome work on those!

Dayton, this update just blew me away. For the life of me I just couldn't pick one to post on today so I just used your blog banner. Look for us to feature one new pic per day and link it to this thread.

And the podcast was such great fun. I was talking with my buddy L.E. and kind of likened it to hearing a genius talk about something. You might not understand every single nuance or comment, but you can just feel that it is good so I resolved myself to try not to mess up your flow and it really came across quite well. I hope Chad and I can twist your arm into coming back on for our new seasons too.

I also had a crazy hairbrained idea about getting you and our other master caster Clonehead together to just see what you two could share about casting. I think it would be like an EF Hutton commercial. Anyone old enough to remember EF Hutton?

Just marvelous work again and as usual you just blew us all away.

Dayton, wow, what a massive update! Thanks so much for sharing with us mere mortals. I am blown away by your work on all levels, sculpting, painting, photography and final presentation. You my friend are the master of it all! I really enjoyed the pod cast and will get it on itunes so I can listen to it over and over again. So much great info in there and thanks for answering my question it helped a lot. You also nailed my problem of leaving fingerprints in the sculpt without me even asking. Thanks for sharing and all I can say is "whoa" as I try to take in this latest update.

and I agree the ideaof Clonehead and you talking about casting would be great... I'd love to learn more since I haven't done a cast since high school in the mid 90's - and would love to learn from the masters!

Post by: sith_fire30 on September 04, 2011, 10:58:08 PM
Hey guys! If you listened to the podcast or checked out my facebook page/tumblr posts recently, you'll know that I'm working a series of figures from the Alien/Aliens/Alien3 films!

You guys are hearing the details before ANYONE ELSE (a Yards only announcement)...The first series of figures will include...

1. Lt Ellen Ripley - Two body sculpts...Uniform and " Shuttle Undies"  Also an additional head sculpt of Ripley with here hair up.  Jonesy a possible accessory...(why not?) .
2. Dallas  - Uniform and Cocoon - Flame Unit  and motion detector accessory.
3. Parker - Uniform and Ripped Uniform sculpts - Flame Unit and Coolant Tank.
4. Ash - Uniform and (of course) Android reveal - Removable head, battle damaged body - I imaging an alt sculpt of the head sitting next to the body.
5. Kane - Uniform and (you guessed it) - Flacehugger/ Chestbuster alternate
6. Brett - Uniform and Cocoon with cattle prod accessory
7. Lambert - Uniform with motion detector and coolant accessory.

Some alternate ideas I'm already working on ...

1. Dallas, Kane, Lambert and Ripley in spacesuits...
2. A crew meeting diorama - the central backdrop to the Kane Chestbuster scene or Ash reveal.....Already begun work on the unique wall panels.

Haven't started any frames for ALIENS figures but I have several ideas...Marines and others...

So there you have it! I'm keepin' busy :)

I'll still be blowing out work in Star Wars and various other films (The Dollars Trilogy and Sucker Punch for example)....Trying to stay on target with the figures I planned to focus on the remainder of the year.

Thank to all of you for the awesome comments and suggestions - i hope I was able to clarify and answer any questions from the podcast - if now, I'll be on again :)

Tamer - thanks again for highlighting my work all week long - I greatly appreciate it!

Nice to see some ALIEN love as i don't think many people have done these before!

I'd love to see your take on the Nostromo spacesuits.   They've been a favorite of mine since I saw the movie as a six-year old in the 80's!

I've done a pair of astronauts myself
(you can see them in this thread:
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=7023.0
)

but I'd love to see what you do with an accurate, full-on sculpt of the suit!

Can't wait to see as usual!!!

I'm enjoying all the love "Aliens" and related-material is getting!  We need some way to put all the Aliens, Predators and Colonial Marines together in a big ol' scene of awesomeness.

Also, any chance of a Loader Suit for Ripley to tell an Alien Queen to "get away from her you b*tch"?

Sith_fire30,

Okay, I can't tell if you said this already.. but can you walk through your process? Do you have a howto somewhere? From say, stripping a figure, sculpting and then painting to re-assemble?

Thanks!

Hey guys!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and are ready to kick off the Holidays...i know I'm not LOL! I'm never ready...It creeps up on me LOL!

Need to jump on the ISY more often - took some time to look at some of the work here and WOW! - Some of this is blowing my mind! Best custom site on the web!

Sorry for my absence - when you see this recent update (sculpting, painting and photography) you'll understand why.

Anyway, when not in the kitchen, I spent most of my holiday getting images and copy ready for this BIG REVEAL of some major 1:18 scale figures of familiar...and some not so familiar characters.

I've posted the update on my blog - Sith_fire30 Creations - http://sithfire.blogspot.com/ - but kept the discussion brief and added links to my photostream sets of each finished piece.

Each set also contains the wip images already seen so you all can look at the progress - some have more images than others with Malgus and Savage being the most. I still have a ton a omages for Furlag and others so be sure to bookmark these links and check back often.

These pieces were all based on my love for the uniqueness of each of the characters - and I hope you will be able to see that in the work I've put into each one of them.

Six different characters, all parts of seperate timelines in the Star Wars EU - whether it be canon of not.

Any questions or comments, please let me know :)

Thanks for your continued interest in my work - I have much planned for the new year...as well as the remainder of this one!

Stay tuned!

Starkiller in arena combat gear is my absolute favorite (behind your Dass Jennir, that is).  I'm slowly realizing that that pauldron is going to give me the greatest trouble if I can't find some type of armor to modify properly in that shape, that I may have to dabble in sculpting for the first time.

Finally...someone has done the Tonnikas their due justice!  These gals look absolutely amazing; thanks for sharing them!

Malgus turned out in spectacular fashion too: that recent 'reveal' Hasbro did of their new Malgus doesn't even hold a candle to yours.  You did a really outstanding job on the legs, they look so much more natural in form than Hasbro's shoddy attempt.

Another compilation of awesome work!

I can't even figure out how you do it, but I am thankful you have shared it with us. It and more of my comments are now on the front page.

I truly don't know where to begin with your work.  Your sculpting ability is such that I cannot even accurately put into words.  Furlag may be my favorite of these, as every element of it is not only finely detailed, but uniquely sculpted and crafted.  Your Moomo is just as stellar, as who would have even thought this character would appear in action figure form?  I'd love to see your renditions of such KOTOR staples as Canderous Ordo, Jolee Bindo, the Miraluka Sith woman, and so many others.  Excellent work indeed, I look forward to your next update!

Thatnks guys for all the kind words! I'm only still in the game because I'm inspired by all the other talent surrounding me on this and other creative custom boards. Our work is surely becoming more and more an art form - ad i can see that in the quality of work coming out by many of you!

Tamer - thanks for adding my work to the front page! The I.S.Y is the only site I've found that gives attention to all creative work, whether it be beginners or advanced.

Like I said in my post earlier - I'll be going back on my regular blog updated and talking about the wip that went into the figures I've revealed...perhaps one per update while adding a bunch of new stuff to the mix.

I'm still in the catch-up phase - completling figures that have been sitting on the shelf for over a year now.

Some of the prior work I've brough back to the work bench are...

K'Kruhk from Dark Times
New Republic Trooper set of 4 from Invasion
Morrgain Corde form Legacy
Lumbra from Dark Times
Embo from The Clone Wars
Mon Calamari bounty hunter from Star Wars Galaxies
Tsalok from Invasion

Also have many new figures in the work - many of them alreay announced including those of the Alien series and so on. Currenly have a Nostromno diorama in the works :)

:)

We start the week of Sith Fire 30 with a focus on his Darth Malgus. Truly one of the best custom figures I have ever seen, this one sports multiple head sculpts (over 8 or 9 at my last count) and is pristine in regards to details and paint application. Superarticulated at all required points, this one could be posed in any position. What I wouldn't give to see a diorama made with this figure taking on Shan. Dayton, thank you for sharing your work with us and tomorrow we will post the next front page update.

a 60 year old Grand Master Luke Skywalker and Ben Skywalker to display in my Wookie-Bunker!!! Keep up the awe inspiring work :)

Oh yeah, Mrs Balls wants a Bill Paxton, Private Hudson as an anniversary present lol!

The focus today is on the Tonnika Sisters, a set of ANH Characters we would all love to own but cannot due to some dispute between Lucasfilm (George) and the Actresses who played those characters. Dayton has just done a better job than Hasbro would do anyhow in my opinion. Wow, they look gorgeous

Del Moomo
(http://www.imperialshipyards.net/images/shawn/sf30delbros.gif)
which is just fantastic. He really makes a downright beautiful Ithorian (can that race be described as beautiful?) and has a photostream set where you can see more pics of this custom (on the front page link).

There is also a wealth of information on the front page now about where you can find Sith Fire 30 at Facebook as well as his Blog so be sure to see the front page news story.

Malgus, Starkiller, Opress are just an amazing work of art. Your sculpting, painting, and attention to minor details are flawless. I've followed your process on these from the begining, and the end result is beyond words. The photography / images of the finished results are just so beautifully done. I echo every one elses comments and congratulate you on a job so superblly done.

Still cannot get over Malgus and the Savage. Savage makes me want to throw my Hasbro one in the garbage every time I look at it. All are brilliant pieces of work!

Yeah, I agree Chad. With Dayton's great Malgus I am afraid I am gonna be so dissapointed with the new Hasbro release. I can't wait to see what Sith Fire 30 shows us next.

and all I could think about were your customs and why your not working for a special effects studio!

Beautiful work as always.  If only a toy manufacturer would release your figures.  I'd want them all.  Totally love your Furlag.  I love the detail you capture in the eyes of your figures.  Whenever I look at your work I walk away feeling like I still have so much to learn.  Especially with my sculpting and painting.  It's really cool to see what can be accomplished.  I also need to update your video on the blog now that you have so many new finished pieces.  I'm definitely going to start working on that soon.

Thanks Spudafett! It's one of those old videos "From Star Wars to jedi" that inspired me to get into this - the small maquettes that were created for possible characters in Jabba's palace. I'd love to do that stuff :)

"Milk" Ash is a fave here; looks absolutely phenomenal!  Your sculpting on Kane is some of the best work I've seen from you and, you know, you're not half bad.   ;)

I am in awe of the patience you've obviously put into the wall paneling for the Nostromo: very, very impressive!

I don't even know where to start. Just mind blowing.

I do like the look of that Grievous and so agree that they should have kept him looking so tough like he did in the first anime version of Clone Wars where he struck fear into the heart of Jedis. ROTS and the subsequent TCW Series makes him look like a hagard cough racked weakling.

I have been followin' Sith_fire30 for a few months now & I still cannot find words 2 Xpress my admiration for his level of skill... it is just inhuman & incomprehensible how GOOD these pieces are... AMAZIN'... (BL4CK5H33P picks jaw up off the floor) - I poured over every page hopin' 2 see some of his Bladerunner work, yet, 2 no avail... it is 1 of my fav sci-fi movies ever & Ridley Scott is my all-time fav director... I hope sith_fire30 may consider steppin' away from the sci-fi arena, & possibly try his had @ some historical figs - like Knights Templar/Crusades style from Kingdom of Heaven (another Ridley Scott film)...???

What type of figures do you usually work with to make the skeletons before adding the sculpt? Also how do you know when to stop sanding the figures to get the right frame? I know me I would do too much sanding.

Seriously stunning figures, your presentation is also highly polished. You cetainly take things to a completely different level, the detailing on the Promethious Engineer is quite simply the work of a master craftsman.

Title: Re: Sith_fire30 12/23/2012 ALIEN NOSTROMO DIORAMA UPDATE p.18!
Post by: sith_fire30 on December 23, 2012, 06:49:32 PM
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

First, my apologies for not posting on a more regular basis....between my 9-5, family, home and the attention I give to this crazy hobby, facebook has spoiled me when it comes to my instant updates using my iPhone - I get so into my work, I let my postings fall behind...I'll try to be a good boy in 2013!

Below are some test shots of my progress at building a 1:18 scale diroama of the Nostromo (ALIEN 1979) - More percisely, building Deck A of the Nostromo which consists of the following (eventually): Bridge, Galley, MOTHER, Auto Doc (Medical), Air Lock, Ash Obervation station, Hypersleep chamber along with all the corridors that connect the various stations. I intend to build these pieces to be sectional (modular) and simulate what you would have if these pieces were made to be sold as playsets on the store shelves (which would be VERY cool).

It's always important to do test shots of your dio work to be sure you are heading in the right direction - sometimes the camera lens will reveal mistakes your eye can't catch.

The following shots are ONLY being shared on ISY!! The figures of Ripley, Ash and Dallas are all work in progress and are not finalized :)

Oh, you again.  The "usual" awesome factor surrounding your work...again.   ;)

The Nostromo hallways and wall paneling is looking great and has actually been my favorite part of your recent work to follow.  I think that the dio prep is one of the really cool things about your work that 'sells' your figures even more when they are on display.  Excellent showing!

Good Grief Charlie Brown! Dayton, looking at these scenes from you literally gave me chills! and the figures are not even painted yet! It is as if I am looking at black and white film stills or something. I am blown away once more by your artistry. The love and dedication you are putting into this really shows. Every aspect is simply perfect. Thanks for making time to share your art with us mortals. Merry Christmas my friend!

Post by: sith_fire30 on December 31, 2012, 01:40:37 PM
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Here is a quick update to some of the work I am doing with the 1:18 scale ALIEN series along with my plans going into 2013!

I had in mind to complete the entire crew of ALIEN before the end of the year...but those plans fell through. Wish I could do this each day everyday but alas life steps in and priorities are changed :)

BUT....I did complete the last character head sculpt (or at least will complete it today)!

Brett's head has joined with the rest of the crew...so I got close LOL!

Still needs some detailing and for photo purposes is placed on the body sculpt for Dallas but it helps to give you an idea how it will present. More details of his face once I have a casting done to check proportions.

and I am close to completing the alternate costume for ASH - wearing his medical scrubs while working in the AUTODOC.

Working on vacuum forming a small breathing mask, adding additional detail to the scrubs as well as some scratch built medical tools that will work in conjunction to the facehugger Kane and AUTODOC diorama I am working on...so when all these parts come together it will be an awesome set :)

Finally plans for 2013...

First and foremost....GET SOME OF THESE WORK IN PROGRESS FINALIZED!!! LOL! Been known as the work in progress guru...I just take on too much but hey...keeps the interest going right?

Below are some Star Wars characters you will see in 2013 - going back to the comics this year. Have a few others in mind you will recognize and will list later in the year.

I'm also going to begin work on a 1:18 scale Predator...it will be from the original film I'm sure...if all goes well, DUtch and the rest of the crew will follow.

My ALIEN work will continue with ALIENS beginning to bleed into the mix. Working on a Hudson and Bishop head sculpt right now...

I plan to sculpt more ALIEN GIGER landscapes to go with the figures I create...many from ALIEN and a couple from PROMETHEUS - will be some enjoyable sculpting sessions I'm sure. These may actyally be some of the first kits I sell if all goes well...

Finally Ghostbusters...been wanting to do a line of these characters for A LONG TIME!!! I see a line of the four main characters along with several others from the first film (not so much from the second film) and I would like to build a containment unit diorama with lights and sound effects....going to have a balst with this!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions as always!

What custom plans do you have for 2013???

WOAH! Where have I been! Sorry for the lack of updates here on the forums but I honestly been so focused on my work the only time I've had to post would be to my facebook page - thanks to all those that follow by the way! This past week I've began to focus on more forum postings and consolidating my posts to four fourms only - IMP SHIP YARDS, The RPF, Aliens Legacy and Prop Forums. Before, I'd spend as much as a week posting my work on all the forums I was involved in...I decided to focus on those that offered the best feedback, ideas and talent in the hobby :) Not to say I won't post every once in awhile on other forums but this frees up some time - I also have a blog that needs to be updated...been since May 25th! YIKES!

As always, thanks for the comments, suggestions and support - many of you have been creating some spectacular work and I really need to take time to send you my feedback!  The custom hobby is getting better and better every year and more and more professionals are beginning to notice the hobby as an art form!

Alright guys - here is an update I have posted on the other foums. Many of you that have been following me on Facebook will recognize the updates - others I can bring you up to date.

For those that haven't been following my work that much, please visit my FLICKR photostream to see all that I've been working on over the past year

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/)

Many of you know I've been involved with creating a 1:18 scale world of the original "truckers in space" along with interiors of their towing vehicle Nostromo. Star Wars is still alive and working but I have focused more on this project over the past year or so. Instead of going over all that has been accomplished the past couple years, I will refer you to my FLICKR Photostream for all the ALIEN goodness to this point....with some ALIENS and ALIEN 3 thrown in :)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/sets/72157629799733654/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sith_fire30/sets/72157629799733654/)

My latest work is creating the Nostromo's Main Air Lock door as seen in the film. I started with a foam core/matte board model to get the scale right.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK-paper-build_zps02a0ac40.jpg)

Then for the meat of the project, I created the vectors in illustrator and sent them to a friend of mine to have the parts cut out...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK_zpsd3300e29.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK-Laser_zps01c05bdc.jpg)

Once the pieces were cut and delivered, I added sculptural details using Aves FIXIT epoxy. I added styrene tubes and sculpted details such as the locking mechanisms to the door as well as some sculpt work to the boarder. The deep recess of the door panels were partially filled with super sculpt before molding...

Once the molds were made, I made a casting of the finished piece.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK-10_zps8aed2ba3.jpg)

The door contains both sides - interior and exterior. Below is an images of the exterior and the custom frame I am building that will hold the door into place.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK-7_zpsac813eea.jpg)

I've also began working on the build to the interior compartment of the Main Air Lock. Images of that will be coming soon. I scratch build using sheet styrene, laser cut materials and coming soon - brass etched pieces (my first time). This work is "for the love of the hobby" at the moment but I can see where I may be selling kits sometime in the future so please let me know if you would be interested. Till then, thanks for taking a look! Much more on the way!!!!

Thanks for all the comments guys!!!

Close to completing the first of several 1:18 scaled corridors for the Nostromo spacecraft (ALIEN 1979). These corridors will vary in length, complexity...depends on what section or deck they are located within the ship. So many variants on the ship - I found this awesome video online that features the door and corridors on the ship...it's like the author read my mind.

http://vimeo.com/53743444 (http://vimeo.com/53743444)

Here are a couple images of the first completed corridor - lacking smaller details, the base (being worked on now) paint job and decals....so how about CLOSE to completion LOL!

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/Nostromo-Corridor-Ver2E-image_zps993cbcdd.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/Nostromo-Corridor-Ver2D-image_zps6fd18725.jpg)

Started a new section that leads to the Narciccus Shuttle - you can see this section as Ripley is escaping from the Nostromo, approaching the shuttle entrance.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/Nostromo-Corridor-Ver2F-image_zps60fee364.jpg)

Sculpted and replicated the padded seat railings in the Main Airlock Chamber, also scratch built the dust grate floor from sheet styrene. Additional details are being added over the weekend.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/NOSTROMO-MAIN-AIR-LOCK-14_zps7d3839f2.jpg)

Started a new section this past week - received various laser cut pieces I designed to begin assembling the main entrance way to the Nostromo bridge. The image shows just the laser cut pieces (hastily put together for the photo - nothing glued down). I will add details using sheet styrene, sculptural and greeblie work.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/Nostromo-Bridge-Entrance-v2_zps1ad92c27.jpg)

and finally I decided to reboot my Nostromo galley work. The panels I originally hand made looked too irregular. I had a problem with proportion. With these laser cut parts, I have a much better starting point when sculpting the details of each wall panel...that's right, the details for the Egyptian motif (as Ron Bobb called it) will be sculpted. Once these walls are completed, the opposite side and overhead will be created.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/grail30/ALIEN%20-%201979%20Motion%20Picture/ALIEN%20II%201979%20Motion%20Picture/NOSTROMO%20ALIEN%201979/Nostromo-Galley-Reboot-1_zps4ac2b7e5.jpg)

Getting back into some more sculpt work for the next several weeks - gearing up to create the H.R. Giger Derelict corridor which will be a total sculpt job. Very excited :)

Sith Fire, this latest creation is simply stunning, your attention to detail is simply awe inspiring and such a joy to look at and study. Roger Christian would surely be pleased to see his designs so beautifully re-created.

I have always had an appreciation for the set design in the Alien movie and being able to see the finer details as shown in your WIP images makes me appreciate the designs even more.

I had a chance to watch the video you linked to your post to see how you were inspired to keep fine-tuning an already amazing creation.  That video is flat-out awesome...but nowhere near the level of goodness that your set pieces have in them.  I've been following this project for awhile on FB and the final product is going to absolutely blow people away...because the WIP pics are that tantalizing.  God, this is an awesome project!

Hey guys! Thanks so much for the comments and suggestions! I'm looking forward to getting back to figure sculpting soon but forgive me - been bitten by the diorama bug and need to get it out of my system LOL!

Say what you want about the movie Prometheus, you MUST agree that the art design for the film was TOP NOTCH! That alone inspired me to work on several Prometheus themed diorama work. The first sculptural piece I am currently working on is a 1:18 scaled Hypersleep Chamber used by the Engineers in the Orrery room. I am using Monster Clay as my sculpting material.

The piece will work hand in hand with the 1:18 scaled Engineers I am currently sculpting as well. My plans for the Hypersleep chamber at this point is to consist of four parts: The Hypersleep Chamber itself, a removable translucent canopy, a portion of the Orrery floor and finally a sculpt of a sleeping Engineer (static pose, non-articulated).

Check out my progress in the images below. The first image was to mainly capture the shape. Moving forward I have been adding detail and making adjustments where needed. Currently working on the rear of the chamber which I feel is the most complex (you'd think). Close to completing one side - working on the opposite side tonight. After that I will move up the sides to the front of the chamber.

Like the Nostromo, I am also working on doors and corridors of the Prometheus ship itself....and similar to the Nostromo, I plan on building a 1:18 scaled diorama of the bridge. Below are some images of what I have already completed - a mix of vector/laser work and scratch building from sheet styrene and sculptural elements.

So as you can see, the art of Prometheus has inspired me greatly (duh!) LOL! I have many more plans on the horizon...including the modern take on a personal favorite :)

Just unbelievable work, Dayton! That sleep chamber is amazing to behold as are the crew chair and ship doors.
With work like this you should just let that diorama bug keep biting.

Flawless execution on all levels! Your Alien and Promethius work is ground breaking and beautiful to behold. As Remco said your skill set is now enormous and it is very inspiring to see you working with so many mediums. You push your artistry to new levels with each project and it is a real pleasure to watch it all come together.

Just amazing stuff. Any chance for a time lapse video for making a head? I'm looking into sculpting but want an idea of how much work it really is. Or at least a tutorial on like sculpting detail on a blank arm? I know it would take up a lot of your time but it would be a great resource for us looking into sculpting.

Did anyone read Dayton's latest Facebook Post? Evidently some tools on there are actually accosting him because he doesn't sell any of his work or is willing to make what they want. And are sending him hateful stuff.

I just have to shake my head about the human race sometimes. Can't we sometimes just step back and admire the work and the art?

Indeed.  Sometimes one's artwork is simply their own, and that should be respected.

I haven't read it. I'm still resisting facebook so I steer clear, and this is one of the reasons.

I shake my head at the human race at least 6 or 7 times a day. If it wasn't for my wife tempering me I'd either be a hermit or in jail.

I hear you guys, one of the reasons this place was created was to make sure those types of folks steer well clear of the Shipyards!
