With April showers comes...a new customizing event here at the Shipyards! We have had some great contest the last several months and we want to continue to challenge your creative processes this month. We bring you the April Trash to treasure contest. Basically you take items that would be thrown away and make something for your Star Wars Universe. From pudding cups to broken toys anything is game to make a droid, background fodder, a computer console, a vehicle or whatever your mind can dream up. The idea is to get you think outside the box on this one and use parts you never would have thought of...or maybe you have. We need to see atleast 1 pic when you decide what parts/trash you will be working with. Then as you assemble everything we would love to see WIP pictures and talk about the creation and share ideas.  When you are done with all mods and painting you can submit 5 pictures of your creation along with any 3 3/4 inch Star Wars figure for scale. When you post your entry pics, you must start that post with the words "THIS IS MY ENTRY" All competitors need to be registered members of the Shipyards. One entry only but if you have time to make something else for the fun of it go right ahead. Your entry has  to be new and not seen on any forum before. This contest starts April 14, 2011 and runs through May 8, 2011. At that time a new thread will be started for everyone to vote for the winner and in the event of a tie we will re vote for the top 2. Below are several examples of what would be acceptable.

Ghostskull18 made a cool speeder from the bottom of a computer mouse.

Hansfartknocker made this remote drone for his bounty hunter from an old Backyugon launcher. ( I am sure I murdered the spelling of this thing)

Hangarbay94 made this great display base for the Dark Child figures from a sushi tray.

I made this from a broken Blackout Transformer

The background walls for this diorama are made for styrofoam packaging all carved up other than the smooth areas. The the white troop sled is made from an old cassette drawer plus styrene and a razor case with a few bits. The green storage bin is an old computer hard disk storage case. The blue containers in the back are made from pudding cups and the green small bin is made from ear muffs.

This simple diorama was all made from leftovers and trash. The back wall and floor are foam board scraps, the tubes up the wall are made from napkin tubes covered in the protective cardboard you find with light bulb packaging. The flat part is covered with flourescent light bulb protective cardboard. In the foreground you can see all types of stuff that I don't throw away. The second photo is a little diorama I set up with a few customs.

So the winner can have his or her choice of either the above diorama with some background fodder but will not be exactly what you see in those pictures. Or you may choose my Diorama from the Cadets episode of the Clone Wars. Figures not included.

This sounds smokin L.E.! Daggone you have been coming up with some great contest ideas.

I can't wait to see what folks make. I really thought that cover from the electrical box made a great Wookie platform!

Thanks Tamer and I am going to kick this off with that build. I found a broken telephone interface box on my job site and with a quickness threw it in the back of my truck thinking I am going to make something out of this! When I got home I got the mud off, realized the door was not damaged and took it off. I flipped it over and thought...mobile battle platform. All I had to do was use my cutting tool on the dremel to remove a few pieces of plastic, grind away the excess and sand. Below is a photo of my trash.

In the next photo you can see where I had to dremel and sand away the plastic I didn't want.

Thats what that was, a phone box. I knew it was some type of electrical box.

Those are some daggone great prizes too, thanks for being willing to donate them L.E.

hmmm interesting Idea.

once while working at the gas station I worked at during high school I took a block of wood that was used as a spacer in a cigar box display (the block of wood was about the size of large cigar, 1inch square by about 5-6 inches long) and carved an x-wing fuselage out of the block of wood...  then I attached parts of cigarette cartons to the back for wings and colored it using permanent markers from the office... all of this was done during a LONG LONG 12 hour double shift!  unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it but it hung in our office for a while since the manager was a star wars fan...  if you can imagine an x-wing with marlboro logos on the wings and a wooden fuselage that's basically what it amounted to! lol.

I'll have to keep my eyes out for some junk around the house that might be useful for this.

to be honest though I'm not really interested in the prizes here, it's not that they aren't awesome prize packages... it's just that I'd have NO WHERE to put them! lol  so if I participate it'll just be for the fun of it.

mwahahahahahahahahahahaha

My wife will be *delighted* to see me doing something with all the "trash-bits" I've accumulated.  The kids are like cats - insanely, innately curious where motion of any kind is involved...

I bought a Joe vehicle on ebay a while back - it *specifically* stated "broken, good for parts only."  Now - we all know the definition of "broken" to a customizer is NOT that of a typical parent.  Sure the wheel-mounts were broken.  Otherwise, the chassis was in GREAT shape!  (and showed as such in the auction pics)  Since I bought it, technically I wouldn't throw it away, so I'm not real sure if it would count for this contest.  I'm thinking I need to start with something totally NOT toy-related on this one...

Ghost that is a great fix to your speeder but has been shown on the forums before. You have to create something new for this. You also have to show a pic of what you started with, the trash, this isn't really trash either.

That, Ghost, is what LE made out of his Phone Box. Truly an amazing accomplishment.

This is a great contest and I can imagine that most of us has some sort of non toy based fodder that could become anything. Not that a toy would be out of the question to use, especially if it was someone's trash.

It is my vehicle GS18, I am giving you the WIP pics now. Guys I am running the contest and just playing along but not looking to pull a hangarbay94 and win my own prize. haha Hey I just coined a new phrase. ;) Back on topic, the next few pics represent day 1 of my build. I spent about 2 hrs going through fodder bins, holding pieces up to the vehicle to figure things out. The first thing I did was grab 2 Heavy Duty GI Joe backpacks and picked out the 2 big front guns. I had to cut some pieces off to mount them on the backpacks as well as cut away the rivets that stick out. I cut the details off the back upper part that connects to the lid the super glued it together. It took a long time to figure out the parts to the front. I knew I wanted a center piece that stuck out a bit and looked cool. I lucked out as a box arrived from a community chest from another forum and the front center piece came from that box! I used a figure stand behind it to fill the gap then added the Blackout Transformer arms (that were removed from my mini rig custom) to give some detail where they connect to the gun placement.

I am a container/extra storage junkie, so I went with the mentos gun bins on each side. They are velcroed on and hold a ton of weapons. Then I had very small areas left so I used a few SW and Joe backpacks for some detail.

I wanted a simple propulsion system on the back, it was going to be removable but I was worried about it failing and plan to make a separate mini rig for that. The platform with fans is from the generic Target figures that hit clearance last year. The center detail on the back is part of a happy meal toy. There will be a gun mount back here soon.

The control center is a modified computer that I found a clearance, it had legs, a back screen and 2 side panels so it has been modded a bit.

I will get rid of the writing on the floor with strips of styrene from a for sale sign.

I picked out my trash today, lol.  I was messing around and hacking it up.. quick question, does anyone know about old electronics(not real old, but early 90s old).. is there anything in the circuit boards and all that stuff inside that's hazardous? I'd hate to be dremeling through something and later find out there's something that's known to give you cancer or something... just thought I'd ask... I'm taking pics along the way, but mainly just putting things on here and there and seeing what fits, so I'll wait till I get more before I post a slew of WIP pics.

Love what you did L.E. amazing what you can turn junk into huh?

I was drawing up some 5 second sketches for a 4 mini dios/structures. An Imperial ready room, a rebel ready room, an imperial pill box/bunker, and an imperial bunker/pillbox. I know it's a large task to undertake and I only have 3 days to do it in. I think I can definitely do the ready rooms, we'll see about the bunkers. Maybe save them for next time.

Here is some of my trash I have put together, I am still looking for a few other shapes to make what I have in mind. The big trays are from Subway's Cookie platter I bought for $5 and ate already. Yum Yum. The bottoms are little juices that my son drank. So here is my WIP pic.

I got some cheap little LED poster lights I really want to add to my Ready Room dio. I know they're not trash or scraps, but everything else in the dio is. I fished out bottles and cardboard boxes from the recycling, using scrap metal sheeting, some staples, nails, blister packs, some old grommets, a broken magnet that looks like a hologram planet I found at work. I will upload a photo of my scraps soon.

I'm also going to add 3 photos, 1 of the dio completed with no props or figures, the second of the dio with props and figures in place, and the thirds with the lights added in for extra effect :)

Thanks Tom! I really appreciate that. Coming up with the right parts takes most of the time up on these builds. Some times I have what I think is a good idea but don't have the right fodder to pull it off. Creating these odd vehicles from random junk is my favorite thing to do.

Here is a shot with a few of my favorite figures. I do this one or 2 times durring the build to figure out the height to make gun placements, computer consoles and just to see how many figure it will hold without looking like a clown car.

I've compiled my trash and scraps and have gotten to work! I've created the base for my dio as well as engineered 4 functioning pieces. Helmet storage cubbies, a circular lounge seat built around a small reactor, a large sconce mounted on the bulkhead (wall), and a "working" hologram projector. I added cheap little LED lights to the sconce and the hologram projector for a test (they can be removed if this interferes with the rules as the lights aren't trash, but they do look amazing!).

There's barely anything in the imperial ready room yet but the photos I snapped quickly really stunned me.

A ready room is essentially a combination armory and storage room. It's where troopers gear up before they go on duty, prepare for a mission, get briefed and debriefed, stow their gear after a mission. In the ready room is equipment, weapons, armor, supplies, and other essential gear. This ready room (purely from my imagination) is one you might find on a heavy dropship (intended for travel to and from planetary missions), aboard a light Imperial cruiser or freighter, or on a supply ship. While Star Destroyers and other capital class ships have many ready rooms--some for pilots and some for other troops--lighter, smaller crafts may only have one or two such as this one I am building.

here's most of my scraps and trash (I added an old burned out mini halogen cabinet light, the spigot insert to an old olive oil bottle, and of course the lights:

AFE that is some great trash to work with! I love what you have done with it and yes lights are allowed to highlight what you have made. Everything in your dio does not have to be trash, just the majority of it. That is a fantastic Diorama you are creating and your pics are stunning! I can't wait to see more!

Thanks spry! I've got a long way to go on it but I had a great moment last night when I turned out (the house) lights and powered on the LEDs. Pretty cool! I'm definitely a diorama guy for now. Love the fact that you guys can make those amazing vehicles. I'd buy two of those wookie skiffs Spry ;) Anyway I'm going to finish scratch building my weapons racks, armor racks, and Speeder bike storage brackets and then hit the whole thing with gunmetal textured spray paint. Then add some detail paint and rust and stains to make the room look more used and lived in. I like the idea that this room is on a dropship or small imperial cruiser that has seen countless tours of duty and received hardly any cosmetic maintenance work. If it works don't fix it ;)

Just finished all the building work. I added in a storage space for a collapsed E-WEB cannon, 2 medieval style armor racks, weapons racks, a "working" bacta tank with real bubbles and simulated blue tinged bacta (water and food coloring). There is an LED light mounted under the tank to give it a glowing look. There's a stormy in the tank who was rushed in from the battle field and submerged. They didn't even have time to remove his armor. I've got 2 speeder bikes mounted on the bulk head, and plenty of weapons storage space.

Wow AFE, you are really running with this theme. All of the details are cool and I love the look of the leds. That bacta tank is looking like a winner.

AFE, this is great! There are some awesome ideas on display in your pics. Is that pieces of glue stick cut up to hold the various items on the back wall? Is the floor and wall some type of metal? I love all the scratch building you are doing, are those gift cards cut up for the helmet rack? Please let us in on some of these parts you are using, it is looking great!

So glad you guys are digging my fledgling dio as it transforms from a Jawa scrap heap to a proud Imperial installation! With all the support and compliments I almost forgot this was a competition! I'm just having such a blast doing this!

Ah Spry, a Jedi never reveals his tricks ;) alright I suppose i can let you in on some of the secrets. Good eye, Spry, yes those are cut up ends of sticks of hot glue. I like the industrial piping or rebar look they have. I imagine in a ship designed purely for work and battle there isn't a lot of cosmetic deco and tons of exposed pipes and and bare wires. The gold rings are some left over grommets i had from a previous armor project. I cut up a contact lens solution box (basically made from cardstock) for the helmet rack and lounge seating around the reactor core. The reactor core inside the lounge is made from the top of a small contact lens solution bottle, with a grommet on the nozel. The base of the seats is an empty plastic dip container from the super market. I cut some nice cloth coated wires off of an old mini halogen lamp (which made an awesome holoprojector table) and then popped two holes into the dip container, threaded the wires up through the dip container, and popped two more holes into the top of the contact lens solution bottle. The halogen lamp came with a plastic connector piece which I cut off and threaded the wires into the opposite, receiving, end of it and glued it down onto the deck for a nice "transformer/regulator box that carries the wires elsewhere in the ship).

The bacta tank was a lot of fun and I decided to add it on a whim. I started with a roughly cut lower half of a plastic bottle, but that leaked all over--I always try to rush the designs I'm most excited about. My girlfriend saw me mixing the food coloring in, trying to gauge the right dilution for the "bacta" and she had the perfect remedy for the leaky tank. An old plastic cinnamon container! Perfect size for an extra tank in a ready room away from the med-bay, or on a ship too small for a full med-bay. I used some of the cloth wrapping from the halogen lamp wires as the oxygen tubing. Glued that to an older Hasbro Han Solo breath mask and posed my trooper in a "submerged" position. I attached the breathing tube to the top of the cinnamon container which screws on nice and tightly. (no leaks!) and then added a mustard cap, an olive oil bottle cap, and some more of the cloth wire wrappings as wires. Added the "googly" eyes for rivets and glued a random metal bracket to the top. Voila! 10 minute Bacta tank! (anyone want one? I could do commissions on these!)

For the armor racks I simply glued two nails together in a "cross" and glued their points onto more lengths of hot glue sticks. Under my helmet rack I glued on a piece of corrugated cardboard that E-11 blasters and other blasters can easily slide into for a "ready rack". The gold rings (grommets) above the helmet rack fit the Sandtrooper backpacks nicely and look space-y enough to also look good aesthetically. More grommets--this time with one side cut out to give them a flat edge have been affixed to the bulkhead to hold Electropoles and other polearms. On the sides of the Helmet rack there are staple gun staples (left 3 thick) glued in 4 places to hold longer blasters such as the DLT-19s. Next to the electropoles I have a micro-rack with a "bumper" to prevent hanging/strapped blasters from shifting during space-flight. This rack is great for the Sandtrooper T-21 rifles with the sculpted on straps. And I used 2 more pieces of hot glue to secure the E-WEB.

The sconce up at the top of the bulkhead is fabricated from the bottom of a curved blister pack, a strip of sheet metal, and googly eyes for grommets. I popped holes into the blister pack plastic and pushed the LEDs through.

Just finished painting it all gun metal gray. Will have more pics soon!

The base itself is constructed from two sheets of thin aluminum reinforced with cardboard backings and "welded" together with hot glue. A very simple slightly off axis right angle design. So more like maybe a 75 degree angle or 85. I will gladly submit some pics of the back and bottoms of this thing if you guys want.

Thanks so much guys! Glad you're liking it! And thanks Tamer for FPing my pic! I think it's a fitting image for the contest... you should see my trash to treasure ratio--waaaaaay more trash all over the kitchen haha. Lots of clean up to do today! I finished the diorama today and have tons of photos. Painted everything in full detail, weathered and stained the walls and floors, added rust to various bits and even through in a nice cut-metal looking Imperial Cog! Photos are coming as fast as I can upload them to flickr!

Haha Dark! I too still have trash left over--come to think of it making that dio seemed to create more mess than it cleaned up. Took me an hour to get the kitchen put back together. I think that's the sign of a successful custom!
