Great idea and I  can't wait to see the execution of this project.  I've also enjoyed your videos and I think your fitting in here quite well (especially if your joining in on the custom action!).

The idea of the Jedi knights in clone armor is such a great one that I can't believe they havn't done more of them in armor during the series...  so far  can only think of  Plo, skywalker, and obi-wan being shown in partial armor.  I had started a custom of ahsoka in partial armor... I might have to go back and finish that one now.

anyway, I can't wait to see this one finished!  and hope it's not the last custom we see from you.

I'm planning on her being Ahsoka as an adult, and she is running with the 113th Batallion HK-SO (Hello Kitty-Special Ops) Force. Obviously, it non-cannon ;D I think they should show more of the Jedis in Clone armor, it would be cool!!!

For the guys that joked...watch out!!! For the boys who were supportive, you have a new allie ;) This Ashoka, is not to be taken lightly. She's very deceiving and inviting with her pink stripes and Hello Kitty insignia. Don't be fooled, like a black widow she draws you in and takes you out!!! Enjoy ;D

P.S. I don't want to forget that her High Impact Sniper Rifle was made by KesselRunImports ;)

Great work!  The colors and the logo pull it all together.  the shaak-ti head worked well on rex's body. better than I expected actually.

I will have to critique that shaak-ti's facial features aren't cannon to ahsoka's features... but hey, you said it wasn't cannon anyway so it doesn't matter!  That's the best thing about customizing, they can be whatever you want them to be.   I know a guy on another forum that has litterally brought every sci-fi/fantasy storyline into the star wars universe in some fashion through his customs.

Post by: DocOutlands on March 21, 2011, 09:15:33 PM
VERY nice work!  I agree - the HK logo is a stellar touch.

I've been wondering about taking a Shaak head and shortening the head-tails (and obviously painting a different pattern) to make a visually distinctive - and possibly younger? - Togrutian.  Wonder how difficult the tails-tweaking will be...

@110clones: Have you seen the show??? Lol, but thanks bra :)

@Mando Commando: Are you speaking of Etain Tur-Mukan? No she is based on what I think Ahsoka would look like all grown up.

@spudafett: I have this image that all Togruta Females look the same when they become adults. Her forehead markings remind me of bindi's like in the Hindu culture, and they have different bindi's for different stages of life, much like the Hindu culture. So for Ashoka and Shakti to have the same head and facial markings makes sense to me :D But that's just my little version!

So for Ashoka and Shakti to have the same head and facial markings makes sense to me :D But that's just my little version!

An interesting concept, and it makes sense.  I like that idea.  I don't think other than in fan art we've seen any other Tortuga female adults other than shaak-ti in the legacy style....  however in the episode of the clone wars where ahsoka see's the vision of her older self she does have the same facial markings.

but like I said....  With customizing you can take your own path with your ideas and explore them in whichever way you want!

If you wanted to replace the head with one closer to ahsoka's markings you could do what I did with my "adult ahsoka" custom in which I took an ahsoka figure and cut off her lekku with an exacto knife untill all that was left was a "bald" head with her face still intact.  Then I took the shaak-ti figure and carefully peeled off the rubber lekku that are glued to her head and transfered them to the trimmed up ahsoka head.   It's a dificult process though that requires alot of guesswork and alot of exacto knife cutting!  To be honest I'm amazing I didn't ruin the ahsoka head on the first try that I'd made!

I wonder how much different the newest ahsoka figure's head is size wise?  I know the updated costume figure has longer lekku on ahsoka but I haven't seen one in hand to know if it'd be useful for this kind of project.

anyway, have you got any plans for what you will customize next?  You realize that now you probably have the same disease we all are stricken with and will wind up destroying all your opened or extra figures in the name of the "art" of customizing!?

lol... IDK if male clones in pink will be all that intimidating :P...

I read a fan-fiction a while back in which a batch of clone's DNA got messed up and they came out of the tubes female... maybe you could do a squad of female jango clones?  Its an idea I always thought would be interesting to explore.

Sure, a bunch of clones in pink don't look intimidating...so when you think you have the advantage, they strike and give you a grand whoopin' ;D The idea about female clones is a great one, I definately think there should be more female characters in clone gear ;)

I had a terrible, terrible thought...

Can someone take the "Hello Kitty" graphic and redraw it in the style of Fett's mythosaur skull?  I have no doubt my girls would LOVE to have that on their armors once I get them made...

(they've seen the Hello Kitty Biker Scout and Stormtrooper t-shirts on ebay and want them, so a Fett-style Kitty would really go over well...)

the new addition looks good, the lines on your paint apps are nice and crisp!  Using the tape and taping off your lines is smart, something I usually don't bother with taking the time to do (and it usually shows!)

It also looks like your pink paint might be a little thick when your applying it, you can faintly see the brush strokes... I usually have this happen with my lighter tones, the fleshtones and white's especially!

now I'm the last one to be giving advice on paint apps (mine usually suck pretty hard) but if you try thinning out the paint just a little bit you might get a more even distribution and not get the clumping.  BUT by thinning it you'll have to put on several applications.

You might also be getting gunk in your brush causing more distinct brush lines... I always keep an extra rag around the painting table to constantly clean out the brush between strokes.  I dip the brush, apply what I can, rub the brush against the cloth to get the "clots" off and then start over.

BUT.... like I said, I'm the last one that should be giving painting advice!  I'd actually like to know what the experts like clonehead and doc-outlands might have to add?

lol this is funny and cool at the same time, for a ladies collection. I also love the candy buttons on the wrist armor. Reminds me of the old candy necklace we would get as kids, man those things were sticky! As for the paint, indeed a bit of thinning and cleaning your brush every 4is dabs in the pot is a big help. I like to thin with a drop of windex when painting any armor or an astromech. It has a bit of gloss to it and dries really, really hard it seems. Great work Jen!

Oi, I'm not sure I deserve the titl "expert," Spud!   :o

Seriously, Spud pretty well nailed the advice I'd give, really.  The biggest thing is - the more you do, the better you get.  And geez - you know your way around a paint-brush, I think.

I started typing up some thoughts and before I knew it, I was hip-deep in a full-blown tutorial - not all of which was needed here specifically.  So, I put it over in the References forum - http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=6616.0 (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=6616.0) - in case other folks needed it.  It all started from me explaining how I thin my paints to eliminate those pesky brush-strokes.

Nail transfers?  How interesting!  A new avenue for me to explore...

(Glad to see Master Sprywalker has chimed in as I was writing up this reply and the associated tutorial!  I haven't taken a shot at the Windex technique, but I look forward to trying it on some upcoming armor projects.)

Wow, thanks so much for all the help guys ;D Thanks for the tutorial Doc, I will definately check it out and try the windex trick on my next project Luke! I also need to get better paint, I think that maybe one reason for the clumps...it's not a great quality :(  I never thought of the buttons like candy necklace colors, but that totally fits :) Thanks for putting him on the fp Tamer!!!

@Spud: All constructive criticism is welcome and greatly appreciated yosab Thank you ;)

Thanks Darth Daddy!!!

I'm glad you don't take my criticism as harsh, I'm always afraid to critique another's work, especially when it's on something that I KNOW I don't excel at myself.   But I knew the other guys would chime in with something I didn't know, and although I'd heard of the windex trick I havn't tried it myself.

I remember reading somewhere else that sometimes you can nuke your paint in the microwave for a few seconds and that helps smooth it out... but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Especially using folkart. Other than that I Think You Did a wonderful job.

You shouldn't feel that way here, everyone is very welcome to noobs (as you've already noticed I'm sure).  Just because your a "noob" doesn't mean you can't post in older established threads!  In fact, the more you look at other people's work, and read up on their techniques and ask questions the quicker you'll loose that "noob" feeling!

Heh - 100% agreed.  A trick/technique I use when I want to critique someone's work where I feel intimidated (for example, if I'm looking at a Hemble dio! ;D ) is to ask about it sideways.  Let's say as an example Hemble has built a gorgeous rubbled wall and then weathered it - but I think his weathering is ... off.  I may start out by asking how he got those results - "Hemble, those figs are awesome!  How did you get that weathering result on your wall?"  So when he responds with his techniques and colors, I may respond with something like "I've never used that approach before.  What effect were you setting out to achieve that led to those choices?"  And then he'll give up an answer and may even ask me something like "Well, what approach do *you* normally use?"  So then we'll get into a discussion of techniques and I will offer up what *I* have tried or might would try to achieve the results he has stated he was going for.  Then he'll explain why he rejected that approach or - maybe - say, "Wow, I've never tried that before.  Does it give good results?  I'll have to try that."  Heck, for that matter he may say, "Yeah, it's a long way from being right.  I was distracted because four cats had the flu and one had pneumonia while I was weathering it, so it turned out looking like poodu."  ;D

That way, I can offer my critique as a noob without feeling judgemental (or something) and don't come across as a pushy snot-head.

Of course, if someone throws a piece out there and says, "Crud.  I need help - any suggestions?" then I'll likely start off in a similar manner - "What were you trying to achieve?"  With the response in hand, I'll ask, "What did you do to get the current results?"  Based on that response, I'll start making suggestions based on what I have done or maybe point them to a good tutorial.  That way, I try to avoid coming across as a crusty ol' curmudgeon who knows all there is to know!

And that's really the pervading attitude of the 'Yards - which is why all my time is *here* rather than at other sites.  We're all in this together and are all trying to get better - and we're trying to help each other improve.

Uh-huh, I see.  Well, as the resident Doc here at the 'Yards, my professional diagnosis is - you've contracted a severe case of customizing fever!  The only cure is to snap up as many astromechs as you can find and pursue each paint-scheme!

;D

Can't wait to see them all.

Have a lot more coats to do on the paint, but am finding Docs and Sprywalker's methods to be working well!

Great to hear the thinning has helped you. Let me tell you astromechs are not easy! This looks great so far and I can see after a bit more work this is going to be great. When useing a drop of windex you will see a very different consistancy verses the drop of water. You have to sort of float the paint over the surface is the best way I can think of describing the technique. What part did you use this on? does it seem to harden better and with a sheen/gloss almost?
Title: Re: Wookielover1138's Customs
Post by: wookielover1138 on April 13, 2011, 07:51:47 PM
LOL, I felt overwhelmed at first, but proceeded! I have not used the windex yet. I sprayed him black, then started with the water thinning of the paint. I was thinking of using the windex layer as the top coat. Any suggestions?

Jenn considering this is your first astro ,you are doing stupendously well ! i look forward to seeing the finished figure,
as LE said astromechs are considered to be amongst the hardest figures to paint!
Title: Re: Wookielover1138's Customs
Post by: Luke Sprywalker on April 14, 2011, 04:09:50 AM
Oh, OK. Sure try it for the top coat or if you have any trash/generic figures to try things on use them first. I think you will like the results and you won't mess up anything. I don't see any clumping of any kind so you must be cleaning your brush every 3-4 dips in the pot as well. You are off to a great start!

Looking great so far!  I've repainted a 4-LOM, an FX-7, and several smaller droids.  They are definitely more challenging to paint than humanoid figures.  And I've not even touched an astromech yet.

Thanks so much Jay!!! Yeah these little buggers are tricky, but once you get in the groove with them, it seems to flow nicely ;)

@Luke: I have a Batman from a Happy Meal I can play around with, he's junk :D Lol, I am definately dipping in water and cleaning every 3-4 dips. The technique makes a big difference, thank you ;D

@Doc: Thanks doc! Nice, I think I prefer the human type figures myself. Much easier to work with ;)

Jenn,

on that last astromech did you use a primer base-coat on it?  the paint looks like it's lumping on you again and I sometimes see that happening when I use a canned spray-on primer coat and I get it too thick.  this happened to me several times while base-coating vehicles for paint.   I was just wondering if that might be causing it.  It could still be your paint's not thinned enough or stirred... sometimes I have this happen when I don't mix or stir my paint well.  Other than the bumps in the paint the little guy looks good.  I like the color scheme so far.
Title: Re: Wookielover1138's Customs
Post by: wookielover1138 on May 03, 2011, 07:42:43 PM
Yeah I sprayed him with primer and then glossy black, but when he was drying...since it's been blooming and windy in Florida some pollen stuck in the paint :P I even tried sanding, so instead of junking the poor guy I decided to make him honorable :) After all he is a special-ops astro and he spends most of his time in the field, some might say it's camo, lol ;D You'll learn his story soon enough eager Jedi!

Ah so this is the pollen magnet you were telling me about? I see the bumpy pattern it left behind but other than that your paint aps look great! The dome and all the details are very well done. Awesome that you are cranking out a few astromechs. I too had mixed results when spray painting them so I quit and only brush the paint on. The other problem in my area is humidity and it can cause bubbles and clumping as well. So good luck on future projects as these things can bring a challenge.

Great colors on the astromech.  I can totally relate to your pollen dilemma.  I had to repaint the Jabba Dancer "Mira Ya" when her skirt got stuck to her legs.  Luckily I was able to get all the paint out of the skirt, but I had to do a complete repaint after I had just completed the figure.  At some time or another it happens to us all.

ahh yes, the joys of spray painting outdoors.  I try to find a large cardboard box to use as a painting "station" and then paint inside my garage...  I tend to have the same problems with dust and dirt blowing onto the project as its drying so I try to protect it best I can.   Worst thing I've ever had was a grasshopper got stuck to a vehicle I painted and dried into the paint....
Title: Re: Wookielover1138's Customs

ah, you have to see it in an artists way: there is one painting of vanGogh he painted on the beach and you can see all the sand - blown up from the wind - that dried into the wet paint. And its no flaw which reduces the prize of it  ;D

Wow, thank you all so much for the positive reinforcement and help! You guys are awesome ;)

@L.E.: Lol, it's hard to spray living in Florida, you have to either do it in the early morning or at dusk when you're attacked by mobs of mosquitoes. During the afternoon the sun is way too hot, but it's always seems to be 100% humidity :) I will have to try the all brush technique on the next one, thanks!

@wraithnine: Can you please elaborate a little more on this immersion tank and airing cupboard :D

@Spudafett: Unfortunately I don't have a garage, but I will try the box method. Those pesky grasshoppers, my yard is grasshopper heaven, they love to eat my gardens, but if I found one stuck to my custom we would have a problem!

@Art: I plan on making it part of his story, so when I publish the finished pics it will mention his texture. I never knew that about that piece, that makes it even cooler ;D

@hangarbay: Of course you may! I am honored that you think so, thank you :D

Ditto Jenn,

It is truly its own form of art and it is  every bit a custom in my book as a figure or a vehicle. I truly do show up here some days to just see what great new images have surfaced in addition to new figures and vehicles and dioramas and what not. Nate has great skill as I know you already know.

Here's Commander Tano of the HK-SF on a mission to take out the vile Strawberry Shortcake!!!

Here's my new finished Astromech, & as promised his background story ;)

Most Astromechs go to the Coruscant Droid Spa when dinged or dirty, but not R2-113! Gettin' down & dirty on covert missions is his specialty. No time for that sissy spa stuff  ;D The go to Droid for the HK-SF, he's always the first in to scout out the scene & relay data. Accustomed to night missions in dense terrain, R2-113 has a build up of pollen & other natural materials on his exterior. He has no decal & is programmed if captured by the enemy to erase all memory & completely shutdown. That is of course until re-activated by his Smart Key ;) Not bothered by his appearance and usually found hanging out with Wookies, this Little Buddy is a silent & stealthy Astro!!!

@L.E.: I sure have, I'm obsessed ;D Thank you very much for the compliments!!!

@Jedi Minstrel: Thank you :)

@Art: Thank you so much!!! It's funny you mention that because I did have the whole setup layed out and wanted to shoot them in my wildflower garden, there's more sun and color. I couldn't do it since the wasps were hungry and kept chasing me away, so I chose the walkway with the Purple Queen plants since R2-113 would blend well there :)

@Trandoshanslaver: Sure you may, and thank you kindly for the compliments!!!

LOL, awesome choice for a self portrait custom base, excellent likeness! I'm trying to come up with a Star Wars self portrait custom as well, can't decide one Jedi, Sith, or Dandalorian.

If you can find the female stormtrooper, or the armor that came with the comic pack Butlar Swan, you could do a "clone" version as well!

My newest creation, which looks a lot like my first :D I finally finished with the Custom Ahsoka for Shawn's daughter, but even though she may look like my other Ahsoka in many ways, she still is a custom! I wanted to make sure that when I did this figure she wouldn't be a replica of mine so Evie could have her own version, after all I was honored when Shawn asked me to make her a figure 0/ So she has the pink armor, HK Insignia, 2 blue lightsabers, a blaster rifle and a shoulder harness for the rifle which I fashioned out of twine. The rest of the recipe is the same, and her head and arms are glued in place. I hope she likes her!!!

Well there is one little gal who is hooping and hollering right now after I showed her the pics. It meets the Evie seal of approval. After seeing the first pic she said does it have hello kitty? I scrolled down quick like. She then asked me if she could check the mailbox today. I told her that it would probably take a few days. LOL.

Its beautiful Jenn and I thank you. Now to just get my hello kitty atat driver in a similar paint scheme.  ;D

Ofcourse I have to get this on the fp!

I think you did a great job on her!  :D
Is the 'Hello Kitty' done in freehand or a decal?

I'm so glad Evie likes it 0/ I will be mailing it on Tuesday, I wish I could somehow just make it appear for her, she sounds so excited! I can't wait to start on your AT-AT Driver, it will be a fun challenge :D

Thank you all for the wonderful comments :D

@botwt: The HK is actually a nail decal, I purchased a pack from Sephora.com. I wish I could draw her freehand, but I'm not that good ;)

Jenn your newest custom looks great! It isn't easy replicating something you have made before and I do like the suttle differences. You are really doing some great work and I love seeing you add new things you have not tried before, like the gun strap. Very nice Job and I can't wait to see your next project. ;)
