Title: March 2011 Build Your Own Mini-Rig Contest
Post by: Clonehead on March 05, 2011, 07:39:15 AM
Announcing the Imperial Shipyards  BUILD YOUR OWN MINI RIG Contest
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f115/CTtamer/Tamer%20continued/BYOR-1.gif)(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f115/CTtamer/Tamer%20continued/spryrig2.gif)

A lot of us here at the Shipyards fondly remember the old Kenner mini-rig toys that were introduced into the Star Wars toy line many moons ago. It seems that here lately, Hasbro has released some vehicles that are smaller and seem to give a nod to that popular line of old.

We want to commemorate this trend by placing this challenge to you Yarders: Can you build the best Mini-Rig?

The rules are simple: Using parts, found junk, fodder, or an existing vehicle from any line, build a vehicle that is less than 12 inches long suited for a 3 3/4 scale figure that would fit in the Star Wars universe. Vehicle may be themed to be wheeled, tracked, floating, flying, diving "in water", or walking. Vehicle must at least be repainted and must be able to carry at least one 3 3/4 Star Wars "or Star Wars themed " figure. Figure does not have to be a custom but must be shown riding said vehicle in at least one of a max of 3-5 entry pics posted in this thread prior to the contest's completion date. When you post your entry pics, you must start that post with the words "THIS IS MY ENTRY"
All competitors need to be registered members of the Shipyards.

This mini rig must be an entirely new custom vehicle built for this contest and can't have been posted here at the Shipyards or anywhere else in the past.

Only 1 entry per member this time, folks. You may post wip pics and commentary in this thread and we encourage you to shoot ideas back and forth as far as what you are working on.This contest will last for 30 days starting today 05 March to end at 12:00 CST on the 4th of April.  After completion of this contest, a voting thread will be created where all members will be able to vote for their favorite mini rig for 1 week. After the poll for voting closes, there will be a prize awarded for the 1st  place winner. In the event of a tie for 1st place, a tie breaker thread will be created to choose the winner of the tie. No cheating or vote padding will be allowed.

Want to know what you are playing for?

1st place prize
The one of a kind Hangarbay94 custom vehicle featured in the hit X-Wing Alliance Series Rancor Squadron ARC-170 Intruder!

I don't know about you Yarders but I think that is a prize definitely worth playing for so get together your tools and vehicle fodder and may the best mini-rig win!

Looks like everyone is gearing up for another great community and skill building event. I am glad to see some that have never modded a vehicle are eager to try, let me tell you it is not that hard and loads of fun in the end. With the subject being small vehicles it should help the new comers. I guess the other reason I am excited is I pick up tons of small vehicles from discount stores and even thrift stores. So I may be doing a few of these for fun/inspiration to help everyone with ideas. I picked up the white vehicle on top of the shelf at Salvation Army for 15 cents. Sorry but this is my only WIP pic.

WIP

I removed the front wings, added some battle damage on one side, added gun mounts in the back and gave her a flat black primer coat. Then  sprayed it with a rusty brown letting some black show thru as I wanted. That was followed by this nice sandy tan color as the outer layer. Next I like to seal the parts with Krylon Flat sealer. It got 1 light black wash, some silver drybrushing in strategic areas then I used a bit of black on a bruch to detail the center of the battle damage. Here she is at just under 3.5 inches long!

Introducing the LPS - Little People Skiff

As you can now see the back opens for storage and so he can work on the small engine needed to lift this light weight.  All I did was heat the area up with a heat gun and cut it out with a very sharp razor knife with a metal handle, not a plastic one, DANGER! I left just a bit of plastic connected at the end to act as a hinge. It does not stay open very wide because of this but it was the best/easiest/effective enough answer for me. For a final touch I added a critter bed on the back for the one he picked up along the way. Now I know what you are saying Luke Sprywalker that single person skiff has no stearing yoke! Well the crafty owner of said skiff has modified it to be controled by the hand held device he is holding.

Wow L.E. that looks great! I would love to use one of your pics to make us a better Mini Rig Contest Graphic as I just used a canned google old Kenner Mini Rig shot for the announcement on the front page!

I think I may be going to Goodwill tomorrow. I want to find something I can use to mount an EWeb blaster and use my gunner I made from the last contest. Ok, I think I am gonna do this one too!

Beige 4 you can do any combination of what you have listed above. We would like to see more than a repaint though. Like adding some weaponry or something like that.

Jules, thanks buddy.

Tamer it is great to hear you will be getting in on this one. If you end up shorthanded on fodder let me know and I'll send you a picture of what is in my vehicle bin.

That is an awesome mini rig GS! It will have to serve as inspiration for this contest though, all entries have to be new vehicles made for this contest. I commented at your vehicle thread but will say again here I love your crawler! Recycling the old computer mouse is a great idea and all of your mods look great! Now get back in there and create another awesome trash to treasure mini rig to blow us all away!

I'm not much of a vehicle modifier and don't really have the parts to do so anyway right now.  I'm content just watching everyone's work take shape.  Looking  forward to seeing some great new stuff!

GhostSkull -- Great job on your rig!  I really like your stuff and the variety of parts you try to use in the process.

Sprywalker -- It's good to see the galaxy looking out for the little people!  Great execution--nice touch with the ysalamiri sticking its head out the window!

Well Ron, we really didn't put a restriction on height. I did put in the general description that it could be a walking machine so I suppose that a mech type vehicle or say, a walking gun platform wouldn't be out of the question. How about we say that the height as well as length restriction is 1 foot. No taller, longer, or wider than 1 foot.

Way to go on your quick little example, LE. For some reason, your vehicles seem to have a style all there own that I seem to instantly recognize as coming from your hand. I don't know if it is your painting style or what.

Brendan is requesting clarification - is there a limit to how many figures the vehicle can carry?  I know the original Mini-rigs were pretty much single-figure rigs and with a certain few exceptions so are the current offerings.  So we decided to request an official clarification.

No limit on how many, Doc, just a limit on how few. Must be able to carry at least one 3 3/4" star wars or star wars themed figure in at least one of the entry pics. Remember, you can post wip pics at anytime in this thread during the course of the contest. When it's time to post your official entry just remember to start that post with the words "this is my entry" Does Brenden have an account, Doc? I forgot to post in the rules that entrants need to be members.

I think he signed up ages ago - we'll have to double-check.  I think he's going to let me tackle the vehicle with him primarily providing the "Dad, that's so awesome it can't help but win!" style input, as well as a custom driver.  It's come down to one of those "I have three GREAT ideas that I can describe in such detailed terms it will obviously win" situations - so now I have to decide WHICH ONE to concentrate on!

"El Zorro" - a 3-man landspeeder used in the armed reconnaissance role; primary work is attaching two large cannon at nose and kitbash/scratchbuilding & detailing a pair of engines & mounts at the back.

Rapier - a 1-man light strike and recon repulsorcraft; involves scratchbuilding a pair of wings and engine-pods.

Ice Box - Lady Ice's personal ride; modifying the roof and cockpit walls of a CORPS! hovercraft, building new engines.

And that's just the three really CLEAR ideas that I think I have solutions for on the construction parts...

I've spotted a vehicle and I'm toying with an idea for creating a Death Star Construction Vehicle with lots of robot arms and a worker! though I'll wait until the purchase arrives before being 100% sure....

I'm actually pretty scared by some of the ideas and designs already put forward, so I reckon we're in for some serious entries....it's going to be a tough competition to win....

Beige 4 same to you, this should be another great event. Julian I am most excited about your idea, sounds awesome and with your execution I know it will be a crowd pleaser! CTE, yes you can repaint the vehicle as well.

Since we are getting public with our ideas here, I had considered a mobile gun platform, a flight deck ordinance delivery vehicle, and even a mobile dias for Jabba using about 10 gammorian guards to carry it. "if only I had 10 guards"

I do have a couple of smaller joe vehicles that I could butcher for this but dont know. I may have to stage a fodder run later today.

I've spotted a vehicle and I'm toying with an idea for creating a Death Star Construction Vehicle with lots of robot arms and a worker!

I've got several ideas along that line, Jules - but none of them are really firm enough in my head to charge into just yet.  One uses an old Joe vehicle (the Skyhawk?) and Probot arms.  I haven't figured out the arm attachment points yet, so it is still on the back-burner for now.  Other cockpit options I'm considering for that design are the Cobra ASP and POGO.  So you can see *I* think your idea is a GREAT one!!  Can't wait to see what you - the master of vehicle conversion and repurposing - pull off!!

Rich & Tamer, I highly recommend it!  Vehicles are stone-cold FUN to mess with - and fairly forgiving, too!

B-4, I'm assuming you mean the Manta-Ray "boat" and not the Manta sail-board?  Altho, a SW-style sailboard would be interesting, esp. given the hoverboard in TCW's Quinlan Vos...  I looked them up and already see the Manta-Ray could likely fill a need I have for Fixer.

Clint - great-sounding ideas - but I think Jabba's "sedan chair" is the winner there - esp. if you found 10 Guards!!  :D

Spry - awesome vehicle!  I had to laugh at the "little people" pilot, but aside from humor value, that's a great fig to go with the speeder.

Doc I see we got your brain going at it on this one, wait, do I smell wood burning!?! haha Can't wait to see what you come up with. Thanks and YES, I got a laugh, exactly what I was going for. I was sitting here grinning as I edited those pics. I love the "dog out the window shot" the most.

Glad to see you in on this one also Joe! I know you have the fodder to give us something awesome!

Speaking of fodder I went into my cheap vehicle fodder bin with all non SW stuff in there.

Then looked through my broken toys, transformers, junk I like from the thrift store bin.

and came up with a few pieces I like for this event. This first one I am trying to save for a pod racer. I think it is Ody Mandrell's that resembles this sitting/control area.

Next up is a small speeder that I could see a custom alien of some type zooming around on.

This last one I really like! I have been wanting a swoop or speeder for this guy since I created him. I think the look of the vehicle fits the character. I like the idea of an engine blast effect out the back but I will remove this one and add something smaller. I am sure it will get a gun placement or 2 then a repaint will be in order. I am thinking something outlandish, a wild color scheme to match the riders personality. If anyone has ideas or may want to trade fodder let me know.

spry what in the world is that last bike thing from? what toy line?  it looks freaking awesome and I'd love to have one to make my own version.

in my mind the mini-rigs were always vehicles that were designed with the look and aspects of existing star wars vehicles, only made much smaller so that kids could stick a figure in them and use their imagination.  Several of the mini-rigs looked like underscaled versions of larger vehicles....   Some of the "mini-rigs" we are getting in the current line reflect this line of thinking, like the droid mini-tank.

the first thing that popped into my mind was a walker type vehicle.... one that I've tried to do before but didn't have the experience to successfully complete back in the day.  I made a working prototype way back when but I think I will re-visit it with new eyes and attempt to create something more fitting for this contest.

but I might try building another scratch built speeder...  I love my collection of speeders and have been itching to do a new scratch built one.

either way, it will be scratch built, or at least the majority of it will be.

This competition is gonna be fun. If anyone needs some new fodder to customize I am selling three different small G.I.Joe vehicles on ebay right now. If a Shipyarder wants one I can end the auction and sell it to them. I got a desert Joe cycle w/side car canon, Cobra bubble pod, and a glider that has weapons on it. Here is a link to one of them.

Just wanted to make it clear after reading over my last post, I am not going to make all the vehicles I posted. Just wanted to offer fodder trades/give ideas if anyone needs it.

so... after some toying around with junk I had on hand I had a few more ideas come to mind.

Most of them inspired by what was already said:

1:  imperial repair drone.  A small one man vehicle with at least two arms with articulated hands and a multitude of tools (already mentioned by someone as a "death star repair vehicle")

2:  the walker project.   I had built a scratch built AT-PT back over a year ago... and i was thinking this would be the perfect time to re-visit that project.  BUT.... the parts I would like to obtain (for one costs money!) will make the vehicle way too big for this project.

so the third choice I had and I've decided to go with will be something I hope will blow yall's mind away....  I'm off to research stuff for it now and I hope to have it started this afternoon.  It'll be a long project as the entire vehicle will need to be scratch built but I should be able to do it in a few weeks tops.....
for now I'm not going to give away the surprise....

In this new contest what does everyone feel about beasts being labled Vehicles. in short i want to work on an Onderon Beast rider but dont know if it comes within the perametres of the comp. i think it would as they are a form of vehicle but whats everyone else think?

It looks good without it Spry. But in order to have a chance to win the comp. I figured I better add more parts to it. Here is a pic without the turret. You know what I think this way might be better.....

Wow, all kinds of great ideas.

I must say I like the AT-ST Crawler without the top gun turrent myself. Much more realistic to the time period we might have seen them imho.

There is already four pages to this thread and it just kicked off this past Saturday!

Tamer couldn't you see your AT-AT gunner stickin out the top of Tom's vehicle? Tom it really has a classic look and feel to it. I would add a few backpacks to the sides, a radar or some type of sensor array to the top, some tools maybee. Give it a lived in look I guess. Figure out where this design would be used, I see it in an uneven, rocky environment. I like the classic Imperial gray and the treads are just a bit darker so it works just like it is. I could also see it tan with a womp rat on the side or something like that.

I love the AT-ST crawler, I was thinking of something silly like that with some big wheels, like a mini Turbo Tank, but I don't think I have something boxy enough with wheels that would make it look cool... I got a couple ideas, just nailing it down, trying to decide what to do.. I'll post a pic of some possible ideas I got a little later.

Well , I had actually meant a mechanical vehicle, Rusty. I don't consider a beastly mount as much a vehicle as a beast of burden. That does sound like a cool contest idea for the future though. "show us your best beastly mount and rider"

I would concede to allowing a beast if it were pulling a vehicle as long as both together did not exceed the 1 ft limit.

Tom, I like the crawler and think it works better without the turret on top. Man, I would find some sort of mounted weapon to put up in front of that hatch.

LE, I do have some wip pics of the driver for my proposed entry in my custom figures thread but as far as the mini rig, I have only worked on one or two of the details and am not ready for pics of that yet.

Clonesniper as soon as you said "at-st crawler" I thought to myself:
"holy crap that's brilliant! I bet he's going to put the head onto the tread chassis of a new hiss tank!"

I guess great minds do think alike?  I love the design, It's brilliant.  a little bigger than what I would consider a "mini" rig, but it is well within the size restriction of the contest.  I personally think it looks much better without the turret, the AAT turret is too rounded and contrasts with the angular at-st head (I ran into the same problem when trying to put that same turret on the republic fighter tank).   All the ideas of adding webbing, packs and gear are also exactly what I was thinking.  After seeing this I'm going to have to step up my game a bit....

now.... let's talk about where the legs of that walker went....  ;)

Doc, true, so true. haha

I have worked on my swoop bike in 3 seperate 30 minute segments. There are not that mods to this, added the handle bars removed the green blast effect then added a greeblie to the back to beef it up, cut off the foot styrups on each side along with a push button that would spin the blast effect. Then a coat of flat black...

Hans, nice job! Great idea for that thing! I have one too and have never figured out what to do with it.

Beast, Tom is right, it looks like a great armed escape shuttle/pod. It would be cool to add a nose cone to the front so it isn't as stubby.

Ghost, I don't have the rig or the big AT-AT  but I but I bet it would fit in there.

Spud, thanks! When I started on the front with the red paint the transition to black looked cool so I went with it. Then I dry brushed it with silver.

Thanks Tamer, I think it came from a Ep 2 Jedi as a force effect and I have a small 3 led light under it.

Tom, glad you like the set up and yes, he is a bossy rough rider. Ride or Die!

Art, so true. Bang your head! metal health will drive you mad! Bang your head!

Clint, thanks man. He is basicly a swoop racer. I ade him from the Dr. Lewis figure, Devarian head, I think Red Ninja gloves and strapping.

Thanks Rich.

that at-st crawler is so freaking cool I might have to copy it myself if I ever come across the parts to do it!  so cool.  The paint weathering blends it all together very nicely.

The mole pod project looks good, I ALMOST picked one up today on clearance for this project, I didn't know the drill could be removed!  It looks like a small armored escape pod to me!  I like where it's headed.

all the entries look good.  I started working on mine.  Decided to go an entirely different direction and try something different.  I might go back to my original idea if I find the parts to do it but for now I've got another plan....

(MODIFICATION ALERT:  THIS IS JUST A WIP SESSION OF PHOTOS....  I HAVE CHANGED SOME OF THIS SLIGHTLY AND WILL BE RE-POSTING IMAGES SOON THAT WILL BE MY OFFICIAL ENTRY... my bad for jumping the gun! :/ doh! should have known I'd need to change SOMETHING!)

MR-UT

Multi-Role Utility Transport

The MR-UT is not so much a transport as it is a glorified fork-lift.  Similar in design to most republic walkers the MR-UT is bi-pedal.  However, unlike other walker designs the unit incorporates two forward facing arms.

These arms are equipped with a set of hands which mimic the human hand in dexterity, this allows the vehicle to be used in a multitude of ways.

The unit has a sophisticated gyroscopic stabilizing system which automatically compensates for any load which it is lifting and any shift in the driver's weight or position.

due to it's similarity to the AT-RT in size and mechanics Clone soldiers trained in piloting the AT-RT are able to pick up the Loader's controls easily.

Commonly the MR-UT is used for loading munitions and supplies into transports, but can be modified for combat if the need arises.
However, the MR-UT is built for brute strength, not speed.  Nor is it designed to withstand weapons fire as it has no armor what-so-ever.

The MR-UT has the unique ability to fold up into a storage configuration, making it much smaller.  This allows the MR-UT to be transported easily to new staging grounds or from hangar to hangar.  Once in the storage configuration the unit takes up less space than the typical speeder bike.

I was going to take photos of this thing transformed into "storage mode" but my camera battery died.  I'll get some uploaded in the morning.

to construct this monstrosity I used parts from a 1:18th scale motorcycle and the rest is made from a transformer tank.   I took the tank completely apart and then pulled off everything except the arms and legs.  The legs still retain their basic "transforming" process and this is what I used to fold them up to get the vehicle into a smaller size.

when I think of the classic mini-rigs I think of those vehicles that were so ridiculous they didn't even look practical...  I wanted to make something that was small enough to fit well within the size restriction of the contest but also would be similar in size to the original mini-rigs.   I also wanted it to look totally absurd, and untraditional.  I think I achieved that look without going TOO far into the absurd!

Like I said, I'll have some more photos in the morning when the battery for my camera charges back up.  Let me know what you guys think of it!

We do have the time to make mods to our entries correct?  After looking at mine with fresh eyes, that hadn't been at work for 8 hours and then worked on the custom for another 6....  I see some things I don't like.   Mainly the cannon in the back of the rig.  Originally I was going to use the mini-gun from the arf trooper as a wrist mounted gun, but make it removable... when I was trying to see where he could "store" it I stuck it in the back there.   I look at it now and it looks totally ridiculous!   I'm going to modify that and then re-submit photos.

I will get photos of the walker in it's folded up position as well.

Spuda, you definitely have a creative mind. I would never have thought to use a transformer. And then to make it a super forklift is crazy. You gotta love a forklift with a mini-gun. lol

Ok,

THIS is my entry,  I'm done modifying it now.

I removed the mini gun that I'd stuck up it's rear and replaced it with a cobra viper's backpack which covered the gaping hole nicely and added a nice greeblie look.  I also mixed up some red paint to match the transformer's red color to splash onto the motorcycle section to try and tie it all in a little better.

here ya go: (edited to only 5 pics)

Looks cool with the change, Devin. I believe the rules stated you were limited to 3-5 pics for your entry post, by the way. Could you pick your favorite 5 with at least one of them showing the figure riding it to keep here and possibly post the other ones in your custom vehicles thread?
I like the one with it holding that big gun.

Devin, I appreciate you adjusting your post.

The issue with more pics is that we are going to have to get all of this together once all of the entries are submitted so folks can vote as this one the forum members will choose. Once again thank you for understanding and adjusting your entry, I would hate to think something this creative not entered.

No big deal...  Its just hard to limit myself to a certain number of pics sometimes!  I get going with my new camera and usually wind up with 30 or so pics!

as always any of my work can be viewed on my deviant-art page under the same handle that I use here.

it's my fault for not paying close enough attention to the rules in the initial post. again I apologize...

now where are everyone else's entries!?  we had such a good turn out for the kit-bash contest, it's not that hard to throw together a mini-rig vehicle!  HELL the only reason there is a mini-rig classification is because WAY back in the day kenner's lazy yet industrious toy designers threw together some weird "futuristic" star wars-ey hunks of plastic and called them toys.... forcing children to actually use their imagination! :P

Ok folks, this will be my entry, it's not painted yet, and I'm not sure which way to go with it yet either...

It'll probably end up being either an Imperial or Clone Wars era light hover tank for the Senator/Emperor Palpatine's Personal Off-World Guard, The Escort Commando's....

That's a good base vehicle to work on by the looks of it, Jules. I got my base vehicle in the mail today and have taken it apart a couple of times already getting ideas. I will try to shoot some pics of it later but it is looking like it will fill the mobile weapons platform duty that I had in mind.

Julian I love that rig! As for paint and going on your description, I could see you outlining the panel details in black  then spraying the whole thing an olive green where the black lines show through. The guns could be left flat black then dry brush them with silver. It would be stealthy looking.

I am liking that vehicle Jules. Looks mini riggy.

my thoughts exactly!  I love it.  Looks wonky, non-symmetrical and just odd.  Which is exactly the way the mini rigs always looked.

If it's going to be a "royal guard speeder" then red or purple should look good, but I like the "stealth" look idea too.

or you could paint it in a strange blaze orange or standard grey like the old mini-rigs were...

Spry and Spuda,

It's funny as I was thinking the following:

1. It could be an update of the Forest Ranger vehicle...I've just purchased a new version of the Endor Forest trooper and this would go really well with him, paint scheme: Olive Drab!

2. Paint the vehicle a greyish black and give it a semi gloss finish. No paint effect just make it a direct replacement for the INT4....display it next to an old Storm Trooper or Pilot....

My gut says no1!

Ofcourse I have been known to be biased when it comes to vehicles and figures of that genre, from what I have been told. It is just a great construction though Jules.

We can only take five pictures once you make the "this is my entry" post so I will give you till tomorrow and then either I or one of the mods can modify your original post with the pics we think are best. I will be honest though, I would rather you do that as I don't want to remove a pic that could swing the vote your way!

Once again nice entry.

Lucasclones, that is a great build! I love these transformer parts builds we are seeing. I tell you there is just no limit to the talent coming together here. If you do a camo may I suggest a digital camo as it would fit is so well with the over all look. Great job man!

Love all these entries and WIP pics!! The contest is heating up  ;D

I started on a project Saturday night.  Now I  wonder if I'll get it done by the deadline.  I think I was a little too ambitious on this one.

I'll try and post a WIP picture later in the week when I get back home.  Already finished the figure and the bulk of the sculpted work on the rig itself, but lots more to paint and not sure if I'm done with the construction, but definitely like what I have so far.

It's an update of the old Forest Ranger Mini Rig.... The vehicle comes complete with a field sensor/communication pack, backpack and weapon, all of which are stored in a rear compartment.
This particular vehicle belongs to Rogue Squadron's Escort Commandos...
Weaponry:
1 x Mag Pulse Cannon
twin forward mounted Blaster Cannons
1 x Ion Cannon

Can I mention how glad I am you liked my idea for the green? wait I just did!  ;D Your touches really shine through on all your vehicles and this one is no exception. Now basically this is going to be a thug speeder bike, ive layed down an under coat of flat black and started on the paint app, havnt started in on to much detail just some orange which is no where near the neatness it will be, just starting somewhere. the bar that he is holding was just to help with the posistion of the feet pedals and wont stay luke that, i just needed something to keep him in the right posistion. so let me know what you guys think.

Jules its perfect!  I love the paint apps and the lopsidedness of the craft makes it a classic mini-rig.  do you have a parts list of what you used by chance?

Rusty,  im loving the bike!  What did it start life as?  Was it some kind of quad?  The scoop on the front is sweet looking.  I'd love knowing what vehicle it started as,  I might have to use it in the future!

Love seeing the entries comin in!

Yeh was some quad, and as for what kind i have no idea it was literally 10 years old from mine and my younger brothers old toys stashed away in a cupboard i went rumaging through lol=D

but yeh basically just a quad base with the wheels and variours parts cut off, then just added some weapons, and other various parts to fill out an engine and add some special features like the droideka legs on the front.

Spuda,

I'm not sure about the name of the base craft, but for the add-ons I used a pair of INT-4's wings and the top hatch, the front laser cannon was taken from a recent GI Joe snow cat.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up on the entries...

@Dark... I had that tank and was like.. oooh, this could work, lol.. then I set it aside hoping for something more StarWarsey... maybe cause I had the tank as a kid for the Joes, it just screams Joe vehicle to me.. I dunno. I do like what you did and it's a perfect example of a mini-rig though, and of course love the clone.

@Lucas... I like the look of it, but the legs seem too small for me, if  it wasn't as top heavy, I think it'd look a little better.

@Rusty...  looking good, I love bikes/ATVs turned into speeders, can't wait to see where this goes.

@Hangerbay... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v172/JoeRhyno/GIFs/Smiley-Faint.gif)

Seriously... That's not fair.. and the winner is... HANGERBAY!!!! YOU WIN.. YOUR OWN VEHICLE, lol.. all kidding aside, I love the detail, the color and just how it all came together. Kudos for stepping up and making such a sweet entry.

I'll go take a pic of my fodder pile and what I came up with, still deciding what to do.

Okay, I took pics of my WIP.. and for poops & snickers, I thought I'd take a pic of how my mind works going through a process of picking my vehicle...

First off, I wanted it to be semi easy, a repaint and maybe some added stuff to SW it up. At first glance, I remember getting this vehicle for a Mando ship..

My only problem was like I mentioned above in another post about someone else's entry, I'd have to do too much for it to not be a GI Joe vehicle(in my eyes) cause I've had a vehicle like this when I was little(before they revamped it), and it screams GI Joe to me.

Off to the next idea:

I got this out and was trying to figure out what I could do with it, I saw a Gungan near my fodder and thought.. Hey, I could use it for some Gungan fighter... Then I started thinking about it and if I was looking at something that I wanted to pick for a winner, I don't know if I'd pick a Gungan vehicle, no matter how well it was done, lol... I dunno.. the competitor in me said I had to do something that grabbed someone by the ears and said "LOOK AT ME"... so, off to the drawing board...

With this one, I thought I had that feeling, then some of the WIPs and entries started coming in and I didn't want to be known at the 3rd string mech entry, lol.. so I thought, I loved the idea enough, I can just finish that for myself on my own time...

I started hacking this thing up, parts started coming together, other ships started getting sacrificed to the almighty Customizing Gods and I was happy with how it was turning out.. had it almost ready for paint. Then my son walked into the room and was messing with some of the other vehicle fodder and I had an idea, I thought why not make something for him. I've seen plenty of guys do it here, make customs that their kids play with, so I told him to grab some figures, and was looking at the fodder, one thing led to another, I asked if I could borrow a Jawa and said how about a mini Sand Crawler...  Then he went crazy, started pulling out all his droids, lol.. I had to let him know I said "mini" not reg sized... So we pieced together an older GI Joe vehicle, used some different treads and then I let him set it up for the pics...

So, I still have a lot of work to do, I plan on taking the front and totally redoing it, making it go out to a point or whatever how the real sandcrawler does. I like how it splits in two, though I'm missing one of the legs, so if I can't find it, I might scrap the idea for now, or I'll make my own.. it might not look right, but hey, they're Jawas, lol... Anyway, other ideas are a crane for some droids or a claw up front to snag a droid or something like that for him to be able to "play" with it.  It got me excited about the project mainly cause it's going to be for him, so I'll have to do my best to make it sturdy and hopefully he'll be nice to it, lol..

Anyway, so there we go, sorry about the long windedness... I'll post a couple progress pics as I get more done... This is how my mind works and why I have about 200 WIPs and probably less than half of that real finished cusoms. I start off wanting to do something simple and it turns into a half scratch build/half rework/repaint, lol... DOH!!!

-Joe

I know your pain... ALLL too well do I know it!  For the droid claw, why not suction grapples like on the Sandcrawler *and* on the skiff from ROTJ?  Hide some tiny rare-earth magnets inside the droid heads and inside a suction-cup from a window-catcher kit that hangs from a crane-arm...

THIS IS MY ENTRY. Ok I finally got this thing done. I added a camo net. It's made out of twine and landscape shrubs. I just sprayed it with adhesive and stuck the shrubs on.

Here you go guys finally finished off my Mini Rig... Now you all saw what i was working on before, i got half way through the paint up and  just went this thing looks shit lol. so i went nuts on it and just made this look as badass as i possibly could, hardcore demon spawn ready to EFF shit up with its arsenal of weapons. Another thing i aimed for is for the vehicle itself to look like some kind of animal/beast and have its own persona. The rider is a hardcore looking bounty hunter i pieced together and is now officially part of this custom and they stay together. so here is my SPEEDER BIKE FROM HELL

So here is what i posted before, and now this is...

Joe, we work a lot alike! Thanks for all of the WIP pics, you know I love them and I agree with Clint that Avatar tracked vehicle on the same moviie mech legs looks great.  I really love that mini sandcrawler you are building! Can't wait to see more on that one.

Tom, that is so awesome! That for me is just a perfect vehicle, looks like something that would really be in the Empire's arsenal. Your added bits and weathering are first class. Now that cargo net you made is just mind blowing! Great technique and look to it, I think you stopped at just the right point. In a forest setting you would never see that crawler from above. Pure Awesome! I love everything about this, it looks like Tamer does as well. I would love to have one of these in my collection.

Rusty, that is bad ass man. Great ideas and I love the one about it looking like a beast. Very intresting parts to achieve that look. I see so many different parts cobbled together on this one! At least one droidika lost his life to this bad boy! I am wondering what the 2 dragon like pieces on the back came from? They fit in perfectly and man that rider is someone I wouldn't want to mess with. Very well done my friend and congrats on your first vehicle! I really like the pic where the swoop is up off the ground a bit.

Like it? I love it!!!!

I can't wait to get my hands on this bad boy. That camo netting looks awesome. Reminds me of some of that stuff I used to cover our Humvee during Field Work. I need to see if I can find something to resemble those tri-brace poles we used.  Very nice Tom and I appreciate the chance to own one of your customs. Now, how to figure out how to get the rest of the folks here out of their great custom piecies. I aim to own at least one of all the customizers here at the Yards!

I also liked the avatar mech walker, but the mini-sand crawler is a much more "mini-rig-esque" concept and idea!  I can't wait to see it finished.  To me that would have been something that kenner would have come up with back in the day, it's the perfect idea for a min-rig.

THIS IS MY ENTRY

Presenting the Rebel's newest creation in short range vehicles, the Recon Scout Skiff or RSS. It features an elaborate array of sonar and scanning equipment, an astromech to pilot the ship, convey information and can operate the guns. The guns can also be manned by personnel on the skiff if desired. The RSS has become heavily used for scouting operations in locations requiring a vehicle that can fit in tight places and stay undetected. The modular nature of the craft when in landing position allows it to be fully armed if it's personnel take off on foot.

This little thing took several forms over the last few weeks. It is a Hellicopter Transformer and I had a small mobile platform in mind when it began. The back piece stayed flat with the deck and hinged down. As it is now I dremeled and filed then sanded a lot away to get it up that high. I had also added some side panels that folded down, a part to another broken transformer on top of the front area to hide the passengers. Long story short it looked hideous. I pulled everything off, started thinking about the Rebels building Uglies with a permanent droid in the nose. So I took out my BAD parts and split open a can to get the part that receives the head. Decided it would fit on top, marked it out and dremeled away for about 40 minutes being very careful and checking the size often. The funny thing is I removed more than I added to the original piece to get here. The on the transforming part I had to dremel and sand a ton more to get the guns to fold forward for the deadly look. As a final touch I added a display panel and a few buttons for the personnel on the skiff and she was off to paint. The droid was a re purposed one that had it's memory wiped and re programed for it's new duties. In a rush they attempted a quick repaint of it's dome to help camouflage the yellow underneath.

Wow L.E. that's too cool.. I love the use of Transformers in these, especially like that one where you can't even tell it's one.  I worked on my Mini-crawler today, reworked some stuff and added a door on the back, it's drying right now(the glue) so I'll try to take some more WIP pics in the next couple of days. I got banned from using the kitchen table for customs though.. :( it's not that bad, I was using it since around Xmas-ish cause it was too cold downstairs. Now that it's warmer out, I can go down there more, it's just harder when I got my son, who doesn't just wanna sit there and "be bored" lol.. and doesn't want to be alone up stairs.. I'm sure we'll find a middle ground to work with. :D Can't wait to see more!!!

Spry you old dog, that is just a masterpiece. Your vehicle builds certainly have a particular finished look to em. I would call this one a tie with your speederbike for your best vehicle creation. Definately deserving of a prominent spot in your display area. How are those cw guns mounted?

Guys, I had planned on using this cobra trouble bubble as my entry as a republic flying gun platform but as I am now swamped at work with the ironworker thing and working overtime, including Saturdays, I am going to have to drop out of this one. I will just watch and drool as more of the member's stunning entries appear.

I don't have a screen cap but I did pause it several times today while watching it on master toons. There are a few of them and they vary a bit but have the same basic structure.

Clint thanks buddy, the guns are removable as I drilled a hole in the bottom to accept the existing arm peg of the transformer. Expect some more pics on that is my vehicle thread.

Wow.  I can't believe the awesomeness that abounds here in this thread.  LOVE all the eye candy.  A toy lover's dream ;D

Just finished my Mini-Rig Contest entry, but I'm not quite ready to submit my five photos yet.

It was a real labor of love.  I easily put in more than 40 hours of work into this one.  I made this speeder bike from an Operation Rex toy that I saw in Target on the day that the contest was announced.   After that it was all fodder.  An everything but the kitchen sink affair.  Constructing it was an effort that was much enjoyed.  I sculpted most of the controls, spare the Vader control pad.  I also sculpted the around grill and the front window.  Oh... and the cushioned seating, yeah, that is also sculpted.

After that fodder galore.  An A-team special if you will.  A beater, clunker, jalopy, hooptie.  Look at your fodder and see more than what the object was meant to represent and envision what it could become with a little imagination.  The grill and window were made from a G.I. Joe radar dish I found in my fodder.  The front axles were made from two yellow missiles and a  Momaw Nadon staff that Apoxie Sculpt hydraulic shocks fastened to what once were guns that I can't identify, but I'm seeing on Luke Sprywalker's incredibely cool entry.  The nose of the speeder bike was made from a Hulk Battle Axe that  is from the  Hulk action figure everyone was turning into a Gamorean gladiator recently,  as well as , a gold plastic mask that was in a fodder bag that we got on Ebay.  The antennas at the rear are made from a Mas Ameda staff and the bottom of an Indiana Jones torch.  I even have the long white tube from a krazy glue container  glued to the bottom and painted purple to give it the shape I wanted.  The Robonino backpack is removable and all his accessories are included and the vibroaxe is fastened with a clear rubber band.  The tail fin is also unidentified fodder and is sculpted in place.  The leg straps that hang down came from the guns that now hold the axel and nose in place.  A pen was  cut and painted  to attach the missile to the bike and both the missile and pen cap are removable. A Mandolorian shield is at the rear.  The engine and fire attached at the bottom are both adjustable as well as removable.  After that it was all custom painted and dressed up .

These two custom action figures may live out there days in Star Wars, but they were definitely created by a desire to have some Dreadnoks for myself when Elias asks me to play with him.  ELias has no interest in Joes, but the Dreadnoks were my favorite action figures growing up.  I think a lot of my customs are influenced by my love for those action figures.  I remember when I got my first one , a Buzzer, as the toy was getting paid for at the counter my knees started to shake because I was so excited.  The toy created involuntary responses in me!!  Now that's toy making.

So the driver was created from a Koffi Arana action figure, a Star Wars drummer that was in Jabba's Palace whose name I can't remember for the life of me at the moment and fodder, fodder, fooder with an Apoxie Sculpt beard.  The Gunner was made from a Pirates of the Caribbean Marty action figure with Apoxie Scupt hair and a Vintage Yoda robe.  Unfortunately, I dropped the gun I had for him behind the couch.

Anyway, now I'm just waiting for the battery on my camera to finish charging. Oh, and finding an appropriate back ground is also proving difficult.   The speeder bike isn't easy to photograph at all.  I'm submitting WIP shots of the photo shoot process instead of the construction process because as any customizer knows, that showing your work properly is also sometimes equally as challenging as getting the custom finished.  So these are the photos of my WIP submission.  These are the photos I have taken so far that I am thinking of using toward my final entry photos.   Until I can narrow it down to five pictures that I like enough to submit as my final entry, these are the photos thatI am contemplating.  They can all be found in the "Customs for the Kid" thread in the link below.

http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=5123.300 (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=5123.300)

These are my WIP photos that I took before the camera died.  There were about 13 pictures and I didn't want to clog up the contest thread.

If there are any photos that you like and you think I should use in the final entry, I'll # the photos and you can say use #'s...

Can't wait until the contest is over so I can post these pictures on our blog.  I really loved this project ;D Even if it did take me almost the whole time we were given to make it.

I've been so busy working on new masters and molds that I've barely spent any time on my mini-rig!  It won't be up to winning, but it certainly fills in a gap I had that needed a mini-rig.  Assuming the weather clears so I can use the paint-rack, that is...

Yeah, I'm gonna be a last min entry... my wifey's off work for the week and wanted to redo the kitchen, so that's eating into my mini-crawler time... :( Here's hoping tomorrow's the last day of that and then I can get back to it. It's gonna be close though, might have to skip a couple things here and there that I had planned, we'll see.

Joe, I know what you mean.  I'm having to skip an "action feature" I very much want to include, primarily because I just haven't yet figured out how to make it work!  So my rig will have a "stand-in" feature until I can pull off what I actually want.

My rig should be ready in the next day or two here, but with only two customs under my belt , and both those being clones, it'll have store bought figures on it. For shame.

So I present my Pirate Mini Rig.  I repurposed the rollers into rocket launchers, cut a hole out for a gunner position, used a hotel shampoo bottle (what I settled for, not what I wanted) for the fuel tank.  Lastly I took some rubber plumbing tube, the same stuff I used to fix an AT-TE leg problem, and filled it with the guts of a CAT 5 cable to add a little color.  In retrospect I think I should have gone with a more sand brown finish on this, but I went with what I had available when I got rolling on this.

Probably not award winning, but it was sure fun to do and it's been handed off to the kids as a vehicle for their Bounty Hunters.

XR - your first vehicle custom is a great one! Very imaginative and great eye useing a steam roller for the base. You have also done a great job of repurposing it's various parts. It makes for a great pirate skiff and also gives me the feel of the Trandoshan hunting skiffs used in the season finaly of the CW cartoon. Very well done my friend.

ars30 - that is a cool base vehicle and looks like it would be from Tron but I have not seen it. I like the subtle additions and the colors you chose. The original is so cool it really didn't need too much additions. The weathering looks great and I really like that pilot, he looks superb! It reminds me of the Cruise Missle Trooper/vehicle from the potf2, only way cooler! Great job man.

Thanks Luke, It Did Come from the New Tron I haven't seen it yet Either,
I Found this on the clearance aisle.
Yeah It Didn't take too many Mods.
I Flipped the Wings Around and Took off the Top Piece.
Yeah The Cruisemissle trooper was what it reminded me of also.

THIS IS MY ENTRY (finally)

Jo'Bray Cargo Skiff

The Jo'Bray, one of dozens of similar models available on the market, is a repulsorlift sled designed for moving smaller amounts of cargo through fairly tight quarters.  Cargo skiffs are found across the galaxy, from rental kiosks onboard space stations down to tool-hutches on frontier world settlements.

Models are equipped with a variety of equipment, from cargo loading-arms to bulk-material dumping beds.  Some starport service providers have equipped their Jo'bray units with Vehicle Maintenance Energizers and plas-cutters.

Routinely, cargo skiffs have no propulsion units, instead requiring good old muscle-power to move.  Occasionally, an owner will install a drive-system of some sort on a Jo'Bray, but such adventures rarely end well.  Inertial compensators are installed to prevent a skiff from becoming a "runaway" on slopes.  Most children on frontier settlements know how to offline them, providing themselves hours of free-skimming excitement - and coincidentally voiding the Jo'Bray manufacturer's warranty.

In the above picture, FX-0R8 (better known as "Fixer") is attempting to cajole a recalcitrant Jo'Bray skiff along the concourse of Darknon Station, a scene taken from the fan-fic piece "Rebirth."  All cargo pieces on the skiff are custom molds from Production Platform 3.

The base vehicle is an old GI Joe Hydro-Sled, repainted and with weapons removed.  Since the back of the hydro-sled is now the front of the skiff, the movable "rudder" piece was removed.  In place of the nose machinegun is a short leg from a Probot.  I'd like to eventually make a functioning/positionable claw, but I've been putting the hours into molds and casts instead.  Anyway, it turned out rather well and looks great loaded down with cargo.  The background is made from HB94 images provided as part of the "hangarbay decals" set.

Mini-Rig Submission

Pirate Speeder Bike

It was a real labor of love.  I easily put in more than 40 hours of work into this one.  I made this speeder bike from an Operation Rex toy that I saw in Target on the day that the contest was announced.   After that it was all fodder.  An everything but the kitchen sink affair.  Constructing it was an effort that was much enjoyed.   I tried to make the mini rig toy I would have wanted the most when I was a kid.  I would have preferred  to make the vehicle heavily weathered, but Elias asked me to keep it brighter.

I sculpted most of the controls, spare the Vader control pad.  I also sculpted the around grill and the front window.  Oh... and the cushioned seating, yeah, that's sculpted too.

The front axles were made from two yellow missiles and a  Momaw Nadon staff that sculpted Apoxie Sculpt hydraulic shocks fastened to what once were guns that I can't identify, but I'm seeing on Luke Sprywalker's incredibely cool entry. I even have the long white tube from a krazy glue container  glued to the bottom and painted purple to give the vehicle the shape that I wanted.  Two hilts from the Prince of Persia toy line are attached to the front of the pod with removable swords.

The two custom action figures that may live out there days in Star Wars, but they were definitely created by a desire to have some Dreadnoks for myself when Elias asks me to play with him. The pirates of Star Wars are the Dreadnoks of Joe.

He would look awesome hanging from those leg straps in numerous different configurations.  He was made to hang about.

I really wanted to retake the photos, for the submission, but work was out of control this week and I didn't get home until late last night.

Ah, yes, I love the last day of a comp like this one. I relly like that sled Doc! It fits in well with your collecting and many other creations and it is a perfect little mini rig. I would love to have something like this myself. I love the color choice and it gives it a vintage feel to me. All your cargo looks great on there!

Great picture selection DD! I really love your pirake ship!

I really have no clue how to pick just one of these. It will take a while for deliberation...

Thanks Luke.  Seeing those last two Clone Wars episodes did give me some ideas that I couldn't update in time.  I wanted to change the color and add the search lights like they had on their overhead bar.

The major problem I had with this vehicle is how well the it was originally put together.  No screws, just tight fitting, snap in parts, so trying to pull it apart to better do the inside and outside painting would have only served to permanently break pieces off.  the project did give me a better idea of how to do things next time in order to have tighter looking paint apps.  Glad I didn't experiment on a prized vehicle.

My original chose for this project was to get a GI Joe Sharc, cut a droid slot on top and give it a repaint, but I couldn't track one down in time tomgetbit done.

Great vehicles from everyone on this thread and the custom vehicles thread  Gave me a lot of inspiration for future vehicle customs.

I have to say that this has been one of the best competition to date, if not the best! Every entry is so well thought out and original. There really is no clear winner and so I am very excitied to see how the voting pans out.

Doc, love the skiff by the way!

always great stuff coming in at the last minute...

that tron jet looks great re-painted!  I actually picked one up for myself recently and had the same "looks like the missile trooper thing from the POTF line" thought....!  I have been trying to figure out what to do with it and I realy like that idea, I might have to steal it!  I was originally going to try and make a joe vehicle out of it but I think it looks like it'd fit more into the SW universe.

anywho, can't wait to see what the end result of this contest will be.
