Title: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest
Post by: Luke Sprywalker on February 14, 2011, 05:09:55 AM
Hello Shipyarders! It is time to rally the troops and challenge your creativity. Announcing the no paint kit bash custom contest. It starts Feb 14,2011 and runs through Feb 28, 2011.

Open to any member of the shipyards, make as many figures as you want. Also open to any toy line, this does not have to be a Star Wars figure, it can be anything. The idea is to get us thinking about what parts look good together without painting anything. You are allowed to add greblies, bits, strapping or other "do-dads" as you wish.  Submit pics at any time during the contest in this thread. I encourage you to explain what you have done and list all parts used and mention what mods you made if any.

What are you competing/challenging your creativity for? Parts lot from Clonehead seen below.

Rather than going with a vote a panel of judges will decide the winner/most creative use of parts and greeblies or bits. The winner will be announced at the end of the contest and Clonehead will mail out your parts. Good luck to everyone!

I am going to kick this off with a few I have done in the past and one new one I did just for this contest. I am not eligible for the prize but will participate in the fun.

Up first are 2 Rebel Base Guards made from Major Panno torso and arms, Clone trooper hands, Honor Guard legs and feet, random heads from the fodder bin and Honor guard helmets. There is also a sniper made from Snake Eyes body, Rip Cord head and the Endor Trooper helmet with a wrestlers knee pad as a face mask.

Next up is my AT-ST Support Trooper

He is made from a Scanning Crew body, Endor Trooper head, AT-ST helmet, GI Joe strapping/holster and a greeblie on there I got from Jay.

This is a figure I made just yesterday for this event. He is know as a local mystic traveler. Many wonder if he is a Jedi that escaped order 66.

He is made from a Belloch torso, arms and lower skirt(trimmed down), POTC head, Comic Pack (can't remember his name) legs, Embo hat and cowl.
I have seen several figures similar to this one and loved them. I just had to have one of my own with different parts but the same look. Inspiration came from Jack of Trades and Darth Daddy in particular.

So absolutely NO painting whatsoever?  Interesting idea... I might just have to get in on this one as well.  Wonder what I could throw together?

What a great idea. It is now featured on the front page. Way to go Mr. Sprywalker! Hmm...maybe even I could boil and pop?

Thanks Doc. I was looking for something anyone can do and make sure no one could say they didn't have time. All of mine were done in 30 minutes or less.

I think they are liking it, LE. I will have to throw an example together.time for a trip to the fodder bin.

And the fact that I need to be cleaning/organizing the trailer where most of my figures are (making room to store stuff for the oldest and her hubby while they get a place found) means I'll be SURROUNDED by inspiration! (and styrofoam, but that's another story...)

Brendan is excited.  He'll be entering, I'm sure.

SWEET, I love simple customs like these, LE's examples alone show how awesome these can be. We just post them here as we finish them?

yep, Joe, post em right here as you come up with em.
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest
Post by: Luke Sprywalker on February 14, 2011, 06:49:22 PM
Ah yes, it does look like everyone likes this one so far.

Joe, yes, crank out as many as you want/need and post the pic here in this thread. Pure fun and simplicity is what this one is all about.

Lucasclones, glad to hear it!

Doc, I am very excited that Brendan is entering. I plan to dump some fodder in the floor, let Jaxon rumage through whatever is there and come up with one of his own as well. With some adult supervision with that boil and pop part.

Clint, I know, I am stoked! Can't wait to see what you come up with. While in that conference today I had a great NPKB idea for the tease the Tamer game. More on that soon...

tamer... we are all here for you, not just to tease and annoy...  You can be just as good as anyone here if you set your mind to it.  Custom projects like this are how we all get started!

Find a good figure that you can do a real basic head-swap on and then accessorize the figure with whatever you can find to look good.  Best thing is the no painting! unlike clonehead, helix88, and the other uber-painters here I'll be the first to tell you that painting a figure is what sucks more than any other part of customizing!

And if you want to get into more kit bashing than just swapping heads and accessories ASK some of us what process you should go about using and between everyone here I'm sure we can get you into customizing hard-core once and for all!

Alrighty… So, I was in the custom cave, looking for parts and I found this older custom I made a couple years ago at a local custom meet.  My friend gave each of us a Vader Helmet and told us to make a custom using it.

Being the uber complicated customizer that I am, I went all out, using parts from GI Joe, knock offs, SW and some others and I made this cool cat:

I was really happy with how he turned out. He doesn’t really count for this, but I thought I’d share him anyway seeing he has no paint. He kinda gives me a special ops/Hodgepodge Merc look.. I dunno… but I like him.

Okay, now that I got him out of the way, all things serious now, here’s a custom I saw sitting on my workbench, two totally unrelated parts, sitting next to eachother, and then it hit me, and my latest custom was born.. I present to you, Water Cooler Palpatine:
He looks a little angry, maybe the Senate is running late, I have a feeling he’s gonna veto OrganaCare if they don’t show up soon… (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v172/JoeRhyno/GIFs/drums.gif)

Okay, yeah.. that wasn’t really a serious custom, but I had to post it cause it made me laugh.  Now on to my serious entry…

I remember a couple years ago, someone on RS posted something like this. I don’t know who, or the exact recipe, but when I saw the GI Joe body and the Gree legs, I knew I had to make it work.  It wasn’t that hard, I drilled out Gree’s ball socket legs so the GI Joe pegs fit in, and then swapped a lower arm, so it looked like he was still changing. Oh, I did dremel down the GI Joe belt with grenades and stuff, just didn't fit with the SW stuff, so I did that and then slipped the Gree belt over... :D

I was so happy with how it turned out, I made him a cool lil’ diorama, so he can sit here at my desk and keep me company while surf the net and pay the bills, lol.
(Sorry for the flash pic, the other one looked too grainy)

Well, there’s my entry so far… as I was digging, I had a couple more ideas, but I have to see if I have all the right parts. Hope you like and can’t wait to see more.

-Joe

Wow, that didn't take long! I love that changing armor Gree diorama. Sweet stuff.

That water color Palpatine reminds me of somebody at work! I loved seeing that Mcquarrie Wookie head on that body too. Great stuff folks. Keep it coming!

joe, watercooler palpatine is hilarious. Great stuff.

that gree is pretty awesome too.  great work blending the two lines together.  If I understood correctly you drilled out a hole in the thigh section of gree's legs to fit over the existing metal ball joints of the joe hips?  interesting idea.

I can't tell you how happy I am that some of you were able to put up a custom on the first day of the contest! Well done guys!

VR- Nice work on all of those. I like the concept Chewie, he looks like a drunken cantina denzien to me.

Joe- you really went all out on that first custom! I see so many toy line parts meshed together on that one. Water cooler Palpatine is great and gave me a good laugh. perfect! The we scroll down to Gree, Love It! I have always wanted to do a clone like that as well, bought a few Joes, then couldn't bring myself to do it as I started loving the Joes as they were. Very well done and you pushed it further to a mini dio. Very well done my friend. This is exactly the type of work I was hoping to spark!

OH yeah, water cooler palpatine nearly had me rolling on the floor. I really like that little gree dio and having him polishing his helmet was a nice touch.

Yep that is where he likes to spend his time, creeping in the back rooms of the cantina.

This Snivvian  takes what he wants, from Fett, dengar and even a stormtrooper.....

Oh yeah, water cooler palpatine rules! I want one....what body is that?

Spuda- Pretty much, I hacked off the peg that went into the Gree crotch, then just drilled out a hole for the GI Joe ball sockets. The plastic was hot enough on one that it was soft and popped right in, the other leg I drilled the hole a little too big so had to use some hotglue in there to make it a nice fit.

Von- I love that Cantina pic, he looks like he's taking a creepy interest into that female pilot, lol.. Hope she has her blaster ready... The snivvian looks cool, is that from the PotJ one?

Palpy's body was from the Avatar line. I forget the characer's name, but it was the one Giovanni Ribisi played. It's a tad small(think luke or Leia size) but stand alone, it works. I got it at Family Dollar, the line was dead and only some of the outlet stores were getting that wave.

Damons- The bown box thing on the ground? I believe it came with a Firefly GI Joe from a comic pack. It might have also came with another GI Joe from the movie line or Hall of Heroes, but I know for sure it was from a comicpack as I bought a bunch of those for fodder. It's real cool, opens up, has a flashlight, gas can, wrentch thing and explosives that all come out, and it doubles as a backpack. EDIT: I just checked and it came with this Cobra: http://www.yojoe.com/action/08/cobraofficer8.shtml My friend sent me a couple of those guys from that set, forgot about that, but it also came with a Firefly too ;)

We may get the most entries ever in this contest, LOL.
Devin, I like your mando. Man, your easy to do trench coat really gives this guy a cool look.
Dan, your figures look cool. I like the Chiss one the most.

thanks man, and yeh that trench coat is awesome, no doubt ill use the same design one day :D

And yeh the chiss guy came up pretty cool, looking nice and hardcore. I was going to deck all these guys out a little more but i think im preparing for a photo novel and wanted to have them as posable, and changable as possible with ease hence the simple effective looks of all 4.

Devin, don't hate me for saying this, but that may be one of your slickest and wickedest looking Mandos to date, and that's without paint!  I'm very pleased with him for sure!

Rusty, you crank out more customs than I can keep up with, and they all are very unique!  I think I like Izekial the most of the lot!

Nice work everyone!

Spud- very nice looking Mando! I love the scout trooper pieces on his hips and the trenchcoat rocks!

Rusty - great work man! I saw your customs thread first and thought hey, these are all NPKB's.  I like the brothers and the story line but the Chiss is my favorite!
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest

Wow, the "No Paint" part is really cranking up the creativity!  Spud, when I saw your Mando, I thought, "Hey - rules said no paint!"  I totally FORGOT about the Galen armor!  Very surprising entry, since we all *expect* certain colors on a no-paint Mando.  Very nice trenchcoat, too.  I may need to try that in vinyl with a finished edge.  Wonder how it would look with those new Hoth Han arms...

Rusty - my son and I agree that the Trinto Duaba figure is probably the single most useful figure for us customizers that Hasbro has released.  Fantastic work on all of your guys!  (Rum Sleg is that bounty hunter's name - and yes, the belt/holster is from Trinto)

Very VERY good entries across the board!
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest
Post by: spudafett on February 16, 2011, 09:31:39 AM
thanks guys.  I was so tired of fussing with the coat last night that simpler turned out better this time.  With it being one solid piece more like a vest with tails it makes it easy to re-produce. Anyone of you all should be able to create something similar.  The secret is to get fabric that WILL NOT FRAY since you wouldn't be heming the edges through any sewing.

I may make another couple figures for this.  It may sound strange but this contest was actually very dificult for me... I realy wanted to paint a helmet up for this guy and had to fight that temptation!

I may also go back and try to make a more elaborate coat and hopefully create a tutorial as well....

Thanks for the kind words guys.
And yeh so far i would have to say Trinto and Talon Karade are some of the most useful figures ive owned parts wise, except the trinto arms i think they suck ass, they (and head) are the only part of these two figures combined i have not used so thats alot of  used up parts between two figures. I say to anyone out there who can get them easy and has not, whether or not you like the characters grab them when your at the store, they make great parts and have very unique features.

Alright that other Yoda was just for fun. This is the Yoda I've been wanting to do for a long time now, and this competition got me off my lazy butt and finished it. I present to you the " Better Yoda " !
I used a CW Yoda body and lightsaber, VOTC Yoda robes and belts, and a POTF flashback Yoda for the head. I can't remember which Yoda the snake came with.

Sweet cant wait, I think its an awesome idea, just spit balling I dont truley know how its put together but what are the hamds and feet like on the concept art yoda, would get rid of the paint aspect and might be better scale then the characature clonewars ones.

Just a thought :)

The only other Yoda hands I have are tiny. I can make some custom hands out of the POTF flashback Yoda. Then they will match his head, but his neck and feet will still be off. I might just try to paint the existing parts to match the head.

Guys, I was wondering if this would come up durring the contest. The last day of this contest I was going to invite anyone who wanted to to paint whatever parts they wanted to and resubmit them in this thread. Way to go guys! So feel free to get in on that action in less than 2 weeks.

rich,
Having done several of these style bashes I know what went into doing this... I only have one criticism, the lower joe torso you used is too long for the figure to look proportioned.  He looks fine standing by himself but as soon as you put him next to another figure it's going to look kinda off.  Also with the longer torso and legs it makes the figure much taller than most SW (and even joe) Figures.... this makes it dificult to find vehicles that he will fit into!  I used a similar sized torso to build a super arty tie pilot and with the helmet and everything he just BARELY fit into the cockpit of the tie, and would not fit into anything else....  same problems with my at-at drivers, they can't stand up in the cockpit of even the new BIG-at-at...

anyway... there are some figures that I think you should look for to try and swap the lower body out with, you can just switch the legs to the new torsos.
the shortest and probably best lower joe torso to use for star wars figures is the B.A.T. figure's (same one I used on my mando for the contest).
but the BAT torso doesn't line up well with the scout trooper's parts.   The best figure's I've found for the scout trooper chest/upper half is the Resolute Cobra Viper.  the torso on that figure fits almost PERFECT with the scout trooper chest... or there is one version of commander Flint from the POC line that has a nice lower torso as well.

unless you've glued in the peg joint from the lower torso into the scout trooper's upper or if you've glued the chest halves back together it should be pretty easy to swap out the torsos to a shorter one if you find one that works better.

Like I said, on his own he looks great and the kit-bash is realy well done... its just that he's going to be problematic if you take it further and eventually get him into a vehicle.  of course... this might not be an issue so he's fine as he is! (i'm talking in circles, it's time for bed...)

Tamer teaser - anything ESB related that you can dangle infront of him like a carrot. AT-AT, their drivers and Snow Troopers are at the top of the list.

Thanks guys. I have looked at the Commander again and realized I forgot 2 things, his back pack and he needs front belt pouches. This was a wild parts mix to get all the details correct. Saga AT-AT Driver upper arms, glove detail and lower legs, older SnowTrooper helmet from fodder bin I think the 2 right feet I used came from that same figure. Saga ST  chest, head, kama, hands and crotch for the armor detail. in about 10 days he will get his holster with side arm as they need to be painted along with matching up the gray.

Turns out It is fine as is. I just found a pic of the actual costume. I'll add the gun holster later as I said above.

An interesting note, I read that the cloth you see on the arms and what I called his kama is actualy a trenchcoat like design as it all connected. Then they put the armor on over it...for inquiring minds. ;)

Nice group of customs Pat! Glad to see you getting in on the action! Tom, great Blade Runner custom! Spud the head is from GI Joe, the figure that comes with the watercraft and kind of looks like a stingray. Not sure of the vehicle name. It has to be a tooling for the Indy line that was never used. This came under great debate at the Indy forums and some said it proved they were going to continue the line. Great work all around guys!

I have had several questions here and in my messages about the ST Commander so I took a few pics to help illustrate how I made him. Below are pics of the figures used in this project but you need 2 of the first troopers to have both feet articulated.

Next one shows that you need the AT-AT Drivers upper arms as the details on his shoulder gauntlets are the correct ones with markings at the top. Then you have to cut off the length of the swivel elbow and dremel it out for a ball hinge one from the Stormtrooper.

The Stormtrooper arm needs to be cut down about 1/4 inch and trim down the details so the glove will fit over the wrist area.

Next you cut the flared part off the AT-AT Driver glove off and hollow it out to fit over the lower arm.

Some may say why didn't you just put a peg there for a swivel joint but I wanted it to look like the armor fit down in the top of the glove. Now just pop on the snowtrooper hands and the arms are done. You could use Commander Baccara hands as well as they both have the armor piece on the glove.

Any other questions just let me know and I will try to answer them.

Up next are a few figures created by my 7 yr old Padawan Jaxon Sprywalker! Yesterday I gave him a bit of CW fodder and this is what he came up with with a little assistance from me on things like boiling and popping the parts he told me he wanted and operating the dremel.

First up is a Tank Gunner in the ROTS gear but in CW style of parts. We used an ARF body so he would be SA. I also had to preform the Vaseline on the neck hot glue in the helmet trick for him.

Now we present a 501st ARF Trooper and his Commander. Both figures feature the Rex body  and ARF helmets.

Last but not least is a Feline Jedi species we created. She is slightly taller than the troopers standing at 4 inches. Random clone legs up to the chest swivel. Jaxon discovered that the Plo Koon chest will pop onto the clone post without heating it up. It looks very odd until you cut down the lower skirt and glue it on. The head was cut off a Disney figure and dremeled out for a ball socket.

Tamer, when I put that girl together, I *immediately* said, "That's Ion Control!!"  Hot on the heels of that thought was, "Wait til Tamer sees her!!"  She's dead easy - Medical Frigate Leia head on the new Hoth Leia body.  I'm going to get a computer console and chair from slayerdesignstudio.com (masters made by Delaton from Yakface.com!) and set her at it.  We've had some nice Hoth personnel in the past, but they've left some distinct gaps in coverage.  I'm looking forward to the upcoming Hoth trooper, for that reason.  I wish they'd give us a "baseball cap" Hoth tech.  (I may need to get another couple of those Hoth Leias so I can leave the headswaps...)

Yep, that's my shot at a Corran Horn from Rogue Squadron in something other than flight gear.  (Just three bodies - I remember having another, but I couldn't find him yesterday - I guess he's over in one of the storage trailers.  It's a GREAT figure!)

That new Rebel Commando head looks MEAN!  I love it!  When I saw him on the card, I knew I had to have him.

Here's a mercenary I put together a while back: he'll hunt anything for credits and a gallon of blue milk!

head = John D. Branon (rebel pilot -- EVO 5-pk)
torso, arms = Talon Karrde
legs/feet = McQuarrie Concept Luke Skywalker
belt = Marvel Winter Soldier
shoulder/chest armor = Galen Marek/Secret Apprentice (EVO 3-pk)
hand rifle = HK-47 B-A-D
machete = some GIJoe fig???

Doc, I totally agree with you about the lack of gals period and after seeing yours and with L.E. pushing me I decided to finally make some additions to this thread. Now, they ain't much, a head swap here and a part swap there, but I sure did like how they turned out. I know one thing, it made me wish I had bought more snow bunny Padme heads! I might have to send it to Clint to see if he can make more as they seem to fit most of the smaller head sockets. Ok here goes

First up is my Mando Gal. She needs some paint, but turned out alright if you can believe in a flat chested Mandolarian female.
Second up I decided to try that head on the new At-At Commander but the helmet on that one stinks and how in the heck you get the googles to go anywhere is beyond me, but the head sure does fit nicely on the new removeable helmet At-At Driver.
Then, I found out that the helmet socket of the legacy bearded rebel trooper was almost a perfect match and the hat fit on pretty daggone great too. Now the factory paint job on the hat ain't worth a flip, but with treatment by you guys here we have our first female outside Hoth Rebel Trooper.

Finally, one I have been wanting to try forever is an AT-AT Gunner. Besides the Hoth Outside Rebel Trooper Gal this one sure did get my attention and is my favorite of the bunch. I think my wife about had a heart attack when she came into my den to see me drilling on one of my Drivers and Snowtroopers. I need everyone's opinion on whether to keep the pauldron on or take it off. Sorry I took so many pics, but this was my first real custom! I plan on doing a bit more to this one in the future, but wanted to show it.

Sorry that list pic is blurry, but it showed the pauldron the best. That gunner is also screaming for one of Clint's new vizored atat driver helmets too. Ok, I am done. I have to admit it was rather fun just playing for the last two hours and saying I was customizing!

Will wonders never cease? Am I seeing right here?? Tamer, you old dog, you have been customizing! I had to do a double take when I seen that you had mounted that driver airbox to that snowtrooper's body! I like how you used that snowbunny head so effectivly and then the gunners.............. I love them! I do like the pauldron on the snowtrooper body but think that it needs the smaller helmet to look right. That or some carving out of the bottom side of the pauldron to make it sit lower would help.

I still can't believe it.  My friend, you have taken your first step into a bigger world.

I just had to put this on the front page.

Oh my I have a huge smile on my face! I have nagged Tamer enough that he had to come through with several customs. Very nice looking female Mando, even if she is a member of the IBTC. Love that head you put on the AT-AT Driver. Such a good sculpt and paint job straight from the factory. The next one I will be copying, Love the female Hoth Soldier. Then my favorite one is the AT-AT Gunner! As Clint said great job with the chest mount and great call as the figure makes perfect sense.  It is great to say Clint and my combined efforts got you to do your first customs. Well done!

also like seeing the concept speeder in the background and it looks like a Snow Speeder with a custom paint ap? What is the story on that one?

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!   ;D

I announced "TAMER made a custom!!" and all three kids *left their movie* to come look and *my* wife said, "TAMER???"

;D  You have a reputation around Outland Station, it seems...

Pauldron looks good - I'm with Clint, shave down the underside so it sits lower.

On the Hoth Girl, I wonder if any other Hoth hats are small enough to fit snugly?  I actually don;t have that head (snowbunny Padme), so I might have to run to town tomorrow and pick up the last one they have.  That way, I'll be able to go thru my Hoth gear and check fits.  Failing that, we might have to hollow out a smaller "one-piece" head and cast the cap.

I figured a few folks would come unglued tonight. LOL. I told Spry if I got a snow day I would play around a bit and today we got one so I had no excuses.

Doc, tell your family I am delighted that I am known at Outland Station. I love the sound of what you are planning for our Hoth Gals. We ought to make a hundred different variations and send Hasbro a pic and ask them why they haven't thought of that.

Pat, yepper it sure wasn't for lack of wanting to do em, but I have an onry precondition of never messing up anything new if I don't know what I am doing. Well I got over that today. Still, I shocked the household here too. My wife was even sarcastic enough to bring down the daggone baby digitial thermometer to check my temperature when she caught me drilling a brand new figure.

Yepper Spry and Clonehead kept after me and I have to credit them with pushing me over the edge to finally join the brotherhood. Believe you me it was not for lack of appreciation of all the great work you guys have done at this place. I am amazed at what you guys have come up with and as this was a simple parts swap even I couldn't say no to playing with this one.

As for that Padme head guys, I could just pop it on off and send it to whoever to cast up if it is hard to find one. It sure did work well on the boba peg and the rebel trooper peg. I bet it would have worked good on the gunner fig too, but I liked the look of the clone head so well I didn't even bother. Oh, the bearded rebel trooper sure does look good on that vintage collection Mando too. The helmet is a bit snug with it on, but Clint has some larger Mando heads that would take care of that. It was a fun day.

Now I have a few other parts left over to see what to do with perhaps tomorrow?

Thanks again guys for the comments. I know these creations are fairly trivial but hearing the words from the masters at least as far as the ideas I have had feels pretty good.

the girls - dancing about chanting, "Go Tamer go!  Go Tamer go!"

Brendan says, "Dad... we've ruined Tamer."  To which Keke replies, "*Ruined*?  We just got him started!!"

Well, I've got to make a run into town anyway and I'll need the head if I'm to find a Hoth cap that fits it.  Good to know about the head-peg similarities - that opens up some more possibilities...  ;D  Besides, I need to see about scoring more Hoth Leias to make some permanent customs.

Tamer - welcome to the club, my friend!  Now you have a custom *YOU* created to join the ranks of those other ATAT crewmembers from other customizers you've acquired.
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest

My ultimate goal is to get one custom from all of the great customizers here, preferably made to my Battle of Hoth tastes, but as much to remember the customizer as the custom figure if that makes any sense. You guys really do create works of art and I would never be able to create such grandious customs as I have seen from the folks here. Still, thats what this place is all about, it isn't a competition even in the middle of this competition thread. Folks just enjoy the new combinations. Good lord next I will be scouring Joe figs for parts for my drivers and gunners. Daggone customizers anyway! ;D

I will say one thing, I think we run some type of simplified contest like this at least once a year so I can see if I get any better! I am also officially withdrawing from the actual contest as now I have a conflict of interest! Isn't that great!

Tamer, I'm officially impressed.  Amazingly I have been working on a similar at-at gunner! And now I don't have to! You did an excellent job.  I agree with the comments on trimming the cauldron down so that it fits better.  I would love to see this figure with the visored helmet.

Doc;  the background folks look great! I especially love the gals of course.

Man this contest is makein everyone come out of the woodwork! Far as I'm concerned everyone is a winner.

Post by: DocOutlands on February 22, 2011, 11:26:40 PM
I'm going to take one of the Juno heads and repaint it with darker hair for better contrast with the Hoth Leia outfit.

Brendan found a couple of GI Joe bodies he hadn't used paint on and made a couple of figs - I finally got them photographed, so I'll get them posted tomorrow.

I made another Rebel Pilot off the Bespin Luke body.  I'm kinda following Sprywalker's footsteps on the Rebel Pilots deal, but putting them in their off-duty fatigues instead of their flightsuits.  Again, pic of him tomorrow.

I agree on the visored ATAT helmet - that would make for an interesting look on this figure!

As for everyone being a winner - absolutely!  We get to see a lot of "I never thought about combining THAT!" type customs.  And sometimes a simple headswap nails a character - like my Ion Control girl.  Had I not just gone ahead and swapped Leia heads, I'd'a never seen it.  Very good stuff from everyone and I am assuredly enjoying participating and watching, both!

Very well stated Doc and I too am loving this conte....well, comrodery we are creating. There was a very interesting post at RS and I would like to bring the ideas here. Heck this could start a slew of customs and a new contest but here goes. I posted this in the staff section and wanted to share here and see what everyones take on this is.

When Ben Kenobi talked about the Clone Wars in A New Hope what did you invision? I know I had the idea that he was fighting the clones, not fighting with them. Clones were said to be nameless, merciless, no personality, obeyed any order as that was in there DNA/training/programing. If you have ever thought about this make the figure you invisioned. If you have never thought aboout this, erase what you have seen, go back to a simpler day and time, watch A New Hope, any OT film. Better yet look at concept art, draw from the great inspiration there. Then with a new vision create what you think the Clones would have been if you were getting ready to make the prequals.

This is what I came up with/borrowed ideas from Johnnyboomboom at RS.

Saturday while Jaxon was going through CW figures for his customs I started on these next few. Just finished them up yesterday and here are the pics.

First is an old DS trooper head on a new body and hat with chin strap removed. Then I added the wire that hangs from the earmuffs. His suit will be dark gray at the end of this contest.

I also have a TON of old fodder as I was an army builder early on. So I came up with this to thin out my fodder bins.

Next I played around with a few Joe parts. I grew up loving Cowboys and Indians, had several "Big Jim" figures to play with. Soon I will do a homage to them in 3 3/4 inch scale and I guess you could say this is the begining.

No name for this one yet He is a Zartan figure with another Target head.

Next up is Grizzley. He has SE legs, Zartan torso , arms and jacket. Target figure head.

Wow L.E. your Snowtrooper Commander looks even better in the middle of that group. I am telling you I am not even sure if this were mine that I would paint it as it looks pretty daggone great already. It really integrates well with the other Snowies. That Mon Calamari Trooper is pretty daggone nice too. I wish they would have used some Alien species in their combat teams on Endor. We saw a few in the briefing by Mon Mothma, but I sure don't remember seeing one great any screen time once they hit Endor. Just a shame. Oh Adawyn!

Spuda, here here on your post. Seeing the contributions to this thread really do show how much life our hobby has. I feel very proud to be associated with the group of folks I see post their great ideas here. We sure do have some great imaginations.

I am gonna hate to see this one wrapped up, but wow have we ever had this many entries in any of our customs contests?

I also had a question for the customizers here. If you had your choice of a base figure to start off with, either for parts or to build on, what would it be?

And here are two from my son, Brendan (aka Ad'galaar).  He said as he went thru his parts boxes, he was dismayed to find he has over the months painted on almost all his bodies and parts, so these two were pretty much it that he could build to stay inside the rules.

Jay, I sure hope having a diagnosis means effective treatment is in your near future!

I also had a question for the customizers here. If you had your choice of a base figure to start off with, either for parts or to build on, what would it be?

Well, I'll second the "it depends" sentiment.  ;D  A lot of it varies by what details a given figure has (like LE's use of the ATAT Cmdr for the shoulder bells) and by whether I want a static display or a reposeable character.  Trinto Duaba is a nice figure for parts - alien head and hands, awesome boots, a headwrap, good holster (left-handed, for a change).  Tarados Gon was a good-looking figure that didn't get a lot of play.  Alien head and hands, super-arty arms with tight cuffs (rather than the normal Jedi bell-sleeves).  Bespin Luke - well, you can see I like *that* one!  Ball-joint hips, good generic outfit, excellent belt-rig.  Most of the newer Jedi have good legs for swapping out to use their boots.  The Apartment Jango is another outstanding fig to use.  A lot of it comes down to either starting with an idea and finding the parts to bring it to life or else seeing a figure or three and realizing there's a whole new figure awaiting release.  Then... you just gotta make it happen!

yep, i've used the bespin luke for three customs so far , and apartment jango i've done 10 of them .
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest
Post by: Tamer on February 23, 2011, 08:13:21 AM
Well the reason I ask is that I am thinking they ought to make customizers a good plain base figure like that Bespin Luke (great custom by the way Doc) that one could use as a standard base for new customs. I would think a plain figure in a plain flight or coveralls (kind of like DarkLord did with the Scanning Crew) that was thin enough body wise so folks could add armor or other accesories of choice and then we could really increase the sales of the resin casters here.

I already would like removeable chest armor for a snowtrooper or atat driver and man you could just change up the accesories for a brand new figure. I know Hasbro would probably never do this because most of us would then just buy accesories and not new figures, but man there would be a nice niche for a figure like that. If we ever get the ask Hasbro going again that is one question I may ask if we can get a consensus on what that base fig should look like. Wow listen to me talk about parts and accesories, I do believe the C virus has taken effect!

Back to the customs, I really like that custom with the bird on the staff. I think we need to see more beards and gtees too.

Jay, it is nice to see you around, but I hate to hear that you aren't feeling very well.  It sure isn't the same without your comments here and there in the threads thats for sure. If you get a chance I would love to catch up, but you sound busy.
Title: Re: February No Paint Kit Bash Contest
Post by: DocOutlands on February 23, 2011, 08:37:31 AM
Tamer, I know exactly what you are saying about a solid base figure.  What we need Hasbro to do is can the (what appears to be) stupid "waves" of releases.  There's no way to accrue accurate feedback on the popularity of a given figure when you only get him or her for one wave and then *poof* they are never made again.  Couple that with the horridly shoddy distribution out to brick-&-mortar stores and limited-exposure exclusives, and some of us NEVER see given figures!  My local WalMart usually gets ONE CASE of a given wave.  I was totally amazed when they got TWO with the Bespin Luke!

As for other base figs like you are discussing, the Imperial Scanning Crew, Imperial Engineer/Deathstar Gunner and AT-ST Driver are good starters.

As for removable Snowie chest armor, isn't it pretty close to the AT-AT Commander armor?  We've got the Veers chestplate armor and the "no-name" commander's breast-&back slip-on armor to work from there.  And that's without hollowing out one of the myriad Snowies or Dengar.

I'm going after a snowbunnie Padme and more Hoth Leias in a few minutes.  Gotta find a good Hoth cap to give that girl...so I gotta have the head for fit-tests.

Ah, Jay, great to see you on here, sorry to hear you are not doing well. Try to take care of yourself buddy.

Another nice one Doc!

Tamer, good question. First response is like Doc said, depends on what you are making and what details are needed. Now I love the scanning Crew guy and that is a great start. A  more non specific jumpsuit would be welcomed from me. Think Willro Hood without the beer belly. They could release it in gray, black, white, orange, red, blue, lt. blue, on and on.You could then dremel away at old torso's robing parts to add them to the new figure much like the better Boba from Roberto. I can see Imperials, Rebel pilots, bounty hunters, etc. all with removable gear. That would be grand!

My Kit Bash a Figure Contest Submission
Dad showed me Luke Sprywalker's Kit Bash a Figure Contest and I decided it was time I submitted a custom action figure to the contest. For my submission, I entered a fan fiction custom action figure of a female Kel Dor Jedi that was from Luke's New Jedi Order. To make her, I used the hands of a CW Plo Koon, the head of a Legacy collection Plo Koon, and the body of a Vintage Hoth Princess Leia. If we were allowed to paint, I probably would have painted her clothing a light brown similar to the way the Vintage Luke Skywalker in Bespin fatigues was painted.

First up is a fallen Jedi/Sith:
Ren Gar Jess

Turns to the dark side as a result of finding out about the Sith plot hours before Order 66 hits.

Post by: DocOutlands on February 24, 2011, 07:35:01 PM
Agreed!  Sometimes, we get lucky and they hand us a jewel.  The Hoth Leia was one I lobbied hard for, way back, and said it was one I would buy multiples of once she came out as an updated/articulated fig.  Well, they did her up right!  Now I need to make a break to another W/M in the area to look for more - because that body sculpt works well, also!  And I'm thinking I may have another trick up my sleeve with some boil-&-pop surgery on a Hoth Leia, too...

The CW-bodied Mando Chick actually looks fairly true to how some lady fighters in the SCA look in armor.  I'm interested to see how Spud's slip-on armor project turns out, too.

Oh, and I did get a snowbunnie Padme, so I have the head to test-fit Hoth caps on...

I'm going to have to start picking up these ladies more often, as that Leia head IS top notch!

L.E., I have NO idea how you're going to categorize all of these awesome entries, and yet choose one winner amongst them all!  Every time I think one stands out above the rest as a clear cut winner, 10 more rise to take over the pages!

I have the same feeling for just about any of the alien figure's head sculpts.  They are already so much different than normal human designs that the clone wars cartoon versions usually look fine on a legacy body, as long as the size is compatible.

Oh, bloody...  That Fisto looks great.  I would *not* have id'd that lower as being from a Tusken - which is a good thing!  Guy looks very much like a Rebel Scout on some nameless backwater, either tracking down Imps or else looking for a place free of Imps to set up a new base.  Very good parts combination - and one I may see about replicating.

On the droid, I know the main body is Ellors Madak, but no idea on the hands.

I didn't think I'd have a chance to submit a custom action figure to the contest, but yesterday inspiration struck. For my submission, I'm entering two fan fiction custom action figures of Darth Vader Clones. These two action figures are works in progress, but I like them enough to put them into the contest since at the moment they remain unpainted.

BACKSTORY

Palpatine being the opportunist that he is, saw an opportunity to clone Anakin Skywalker when he was injured on Mustafar. Hoping that the power of the Chosen One was hidden somewhere in his DNA, Palpatine saw his chance to clone Skywalker as one not to be missed. Knowing that Skywalker's injury would prevent Vader from ever reaching his full potential as a Sith, Palpatine hoped that one day one of these clones would replace Lord Vader at his side as his new Sith apprentice once their training was complete. Due to several complications in the cloning process, only one clone was known to successfully complete the cloning process and be trained by Palpatine. The clone that was trained later destroyed the facility where Vader was being replicated knowing it would be his best chance for domination and survival, but not before he took a clone for himself to train as an apprentice. Ironically, the destruction of the cloning facility did not go as planned and both clones took heavy injuries in their escape. Both of their lungs were completely damaged and they, like Vader were forced to breath with the assistance of filtered air. Unlike Vader, they still had their limbs and thus had the ability to use Force lightening. When PAlpatine and Darth Vader were killed over the moon of Endor, these clones survived in exile waiting to unleash the power of the Darkside once more.

The older clone is made from a Legacy Vader and a G.I. Joe Rex "The Doctor" Lewis.

I had to sand off the Cobra symbol to stay within the contest rules.

The apprentice will later be painted in shades of black for a uniform color and more detail will be added with Apoxie Sculpt. Dad held back adding the Apoxie Sculpt so he could stay within the no painting rules of the contest.

The apprentice is made from a Prince of Persia action figure, a Vintage Vader, two Chewbacca's, an Indian Jones action figure and accessory, a Magnaguard droid, and a belt from a Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow action figure.

You have summed this contest up very well Tamer. There is no doubt everyone here is a winner. We have been trying to narrow down the results since today is the last day and man is it tough. Everyone did great work, heck even the head swaps look very nice. We had 3 youngsters get in on this one all under 8 yrs old. I know that is a first! As Tamer said we also hit 13 pages of posts for this one so I am glad everyone was into this one. Thanks to everyone for there contributions!

That's an awesome achievement all in itself!

And don't forget - we got a diehard COLLECTOR to actually OPEN HIS TOYS!  And he even MODIFIED THEM!

Yeah, I'm done with my entries... I thought I *might* get another one in tonight, but ... naaah.  I couldn't find all the parts I know I have somewhere.  So I'm calling it good.  ;D

Alanna was kinda disappointed that she didn't manage to find her "fig'ers" in time to modify them and enter.  I told her we'd take pics and post them once she did find them all.  hehe

Loads of fun!

Yes Rusty, you made it with 3 minutes to spare. I did remove that last photo as none are allowed in this thread that have paint on them. Exelent custom and I really like him a lot! Well done everyone! Now just allow us some time to sort out the winner, as hard as that isgoig to be. Also if anyone wants to paint parts or all of their figure feel free to do so now.

Yes, as Doc said post the completed pics when done. Ok guys, thanks to everyone that contributed a custom for this contest! Tons of awesome entries but we had to establish criterior for judging such a grand event as this. We were looking for a awesome parts mix, the figure needed to blend together even though the parts were not painted, does the over all figure have a highier quality look to it, combined with quality of picture and presentation. There is no way I can mention all the awesome entries but there are a few I want to give a shot out to as the final 5 or 6 were very hard to get to and final 3 tougher still. The 1 winner ended up being determined by counting points from the judges. We may never do this type of judging again as it was seriously a hard call to make with all of the awesome entries.

That being said Joe Rhyno, Clone Sniper, Mungo, Rusty, Lucas Clones, Darth Daddy awesome entries guys all of your submissions were very highly regarded but by adding the combined votes the winner of our first NPKB contest is.............Jedi Merc's mercinary.

The figure meets all the criterior and even looks like something you could buy straight off the shelf. Very well done and now if you can PM Clint with your Address he will send out your prize.

Like LE said, there were so many spectacular entries from many members that choosing from em all was near impossible, even to narrow it down to 3 was a daunting task.
You guys really rock and certainly put some enthusiasm into this latest contest.

WOW!  I mean...WOW!  I'm really in awe of so much of the work done here, it's an honor to have just one of my figs recognized.  (Thanks, Sprywalker, for organizing this one.)  I don't get as much time to customize as I'd like, especially with two little ones running me up and down every evening, so I appreciate the great feedback.   I can't wait to see what all of you will come up with next!  Keep pumping 'em out!   ;D

though I saw a lot of winners here, you guys created so many mind blowing customs, and I even saw a Dekcard from my favorite Blade Runner ;)
my hat is off to you all for your wonderful and never ending creativity!!

Thanks everyone!  It's great to be recognized, but there really were some terrific figures in this contest and I wonder how mine could even stack up against.   I really, really liked Mungo's Sith Apprentice Luke Skywalker---he was perfectly executed.   Great job by all though!   [at1]

I am sooooooo late in doing this, but I wanted to wish JM congrats on winning this contest. Sorry, life has been a bit busy for me and sometimes things we WANT to do (no matter how big or small) get pushed aside for the things we HAVE to do. Again, JM, congrats!
