A Mando grunt I put together recently; nothing special, but it was my first real attempt to customize a Mando:

Thanks, Clonehead, for the front page feature and to Tamer for adding my customs to your page; thanks all for your comments too!   I'll be trying to get some new ones posted as quickly as I can, but I got two little ones at home right now and they take up a ton of my time.   But I appreciate the vibe I get here...looking forward to being a part of the community!

all three look excelent, can't wait to see what else you have to offer.

I've got to agree with everyone else though, that mando is the best so far.  I love that kama and the evo trooper lower legs are a perfect fit!  I might just have to steal that design.... or at least use that kama on one of mine!  I've had that part sitting on my table beggin me to do something with it...

Thanks Art!  I tried to get Galen as close as possible to his look from the game, but just didn't have any armor pieces that looked even close to the kind he wears with this outfit.  My sculpting is mostly non-existent at this point, so it may be a while until this guy is truly "finished".  I appreciate your comments!

I haven't had any time to get much work done on new customs, but I do have a Starkiller (escape from the Empirical outfit) ready to be painted and a bounty hunter/spacer close to completion (sorry, no WIP's--wife took the camera with her on a trip to see family).

I do have Juno Eclipse (smuggler/Rebel captain?) for perusal until my other figs get completed.  I modded a Bespin Luke belt (VTC) so that it would "hang" at an angle; cut and sewed---yes, sewed---the back strap to allow for just enough movement.

NOICE work!  Love those arms on Juno!  Now if I could just figure out how to cast the torso, I'd ... well, I'd probably run out of rein in short order, actually.

Very good-looking merc, too.

Doc, the arms I used for Juno are actually from the recent Han Solo (Yavin Ceremony).  They ran so thin, they are pretty much one of the few SW fig options for female arms out there...unless you want to go GIJoe.

Nice Juno.  I understand what you're saying about the arms.  I've noticed that on a few.  Like Duke and Ripcord's arms of their reactive impact armor are pretty thin.  One problem is that the arms maybe thin enough but the hands are rather man-ish.  My female Mando is based on the Clone Wars Mandos and I've thought of trying to swap them with something smaller.

Joe, I agree with you: the only thing that I don't like is the man hands...they look freakishly big for her.  But until I can find something even close to sleeves like this, she'll have to go to the George Costanza School for Hand Models.   ;)

There's an idea for customs...do tv/movie characters in the style of SW.  For example, the cast from Seinfeld could be a smuggling crew.  The cast from Friends could be the core members of an X-Wing squadron.

Title: Re: JediMerc's Customs (upd. 3/21 - "The Clone With No Name" & Clone Sniper)
Post by: JediMerc on March 21, 2011, 06:40:15 PM
I started working on this guy after watching A Fistful of Dollars this weekend.  I love Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns and got the idea to put together a clone who escapes military service after the Clone Wars and becomes a bounty hunter.  Of course, he has "no name" as he's just a clone.  (I really prefer the clones not have names at all---that's how I always envisioned them after watching ANH and listening to Ben Kenobi's tale to Luke, but I digress).   With respect to the character, I looked for the closest thing I had to the hat and cloak that Eastwood's drifter wears in the "Man With No Name" trilogy.   Without further ado, here's "The Clone With No Name":

Glad everyone liked the sniper; I put him together pretty quickly and I'm still not sure I'm 100% done with him.  Still looking for a leg strap and some ammunition containers to attach to his arm/leg.

I didn't think it was possible to fall in love with your own custom, but I have really enjoyed working on my "Clone with No Name".  When I saw Sinister's artwork, I knew I had to get this guy posted.  Now I just hope that if movie/t.v. shows as customs ever becomes a contest that I don't run out of ideas/fodder for it!   :)

I guess you used parts from a Scuba Trooper, RC, AT-TE Tank Gunner, EVO Trooper and Airborne Trooper
a good mix and the result is fantastic

How about a recipe for that sniper fig?

FF & Clonehead: Pretty much on the dot...the body (torso/biceps/upper & lower legs/right forearm are from the Scuba trooper; feet from a phase III clone; left forearm is EVO trooper; chest harness/plate is from realistic AT-TE tank gunner; helmet is an airborne trooper (modded with an antenna from an old Boba Fett helmet); left arm guard is from a GIJoe 25th Wraith (modded); snow spikes on feet come from a 25th GIJoe Snake Eyes (snow gear).  The sniper gun is from a more recent Joe fig (can't remember which one) and I haven't the faintest where the backpack comes from (modded to fit around the chest harness).

Thanks for taking a look guys!

I am a HUGE fan of the Dark Times comics and The Force Unleashed!  (I really wish that if new movies were to come out that they would focus on the storylines from this era: great characters, involved strytelling, the works.)  Anyway, I try to get in new depictions of Starkiller--check out his Hero outfit from TFU2 earlier in the thread---and I've got another I wanted to see what you guys thought.

Here's a WIP of Starkiller (Empirical Escape) from TFU.  I don't like how his neck came out---I had to shave down a Concept Ki-Adi Mundi cloak to fit him---so that'll be fixed sometime in the future.  Overall, I like how he's turned out so far, but everyone can let me know what they recommend be altered:

Nice job, may I ask what part you  used?

For Starkiller, here's the parts:

Head = Starkiller (Toys R Us 5-pk)
torso = Concept Ki-Adi Mundi (TLC) -- heavy mods on the neck area
kama = Borsk Fey'lya (TLC Comic Pack)
arms = GIJoe POC Duke (jungle gear)
right hand = EVO Count Dooku; left hand = Luke Skywalker (Endor Capture) -- allows to pose Starkiller's saber more freely in the manner he holds it
legs = Hoth Han Solo (Saga Legends)
feet = GIJoe ROC Kamakura

A new update...nothing flashy, as I tend to like to create characters that would be the average, everyday people you find gritting it out in the SW galaxy.  I like to envision a character that could be the focal point for his/her own comic, show, or film.   I do backstories in my mind, but really don't have time to get them down in writing creatively, so just the fig will have to do!

Here's two galactic Mercenaries:

weapons holster = TAC Death Star Commander (modded to fit under waist belt)

Great looking NPKB!

Mostly true: I used the waist from a TSC Han Solo (Pit of Carkoon) and popped a pair of A-wing pilot legs in; the colors of the waist and the previously green pilot legs didn't match, so I painted them both a rusty-looking brown.  Light touch of dullcote spray to allow for joint movement w/out taking the paint off and...done!

Thanks for the comments!

I've got some new ones put together just before we packed everything away, waiting for a paint job but with no idea of how long it'll be until I can get to 'em.   :'(

In the meantime, I'll just have to live vicariously through all of you!     ;D

Sorry, Mungo...been extremely busy lately...only a bit of time every now and then to post here.  Hope to change that soon!

Here's the parts list for that clone sniper:

torso/biceps/upper & lower legs/right forearm =  Scuba trooper
feet = ROTS phase III clone
left forearm = EVO trooper
chest harness/plate = ROTS AT-TE tank gunner
helmet = TAC Airborne trooper (modded with an antenna from an old Boba Fett helmet)
left arm guard = GIJoe 25th Wraith (modded)
snow spikes on feet = 25th GIJoe Snake Eyes (snow gear)

*The sniper gun is from a more recent Joe fig (can't remember which one) and I haven't the faintest where the backpack comes from (modded to fit around the chest harness).

I haven't been able to get my computer out of storage until after we move, but found some pics of older customs I had in an e-mail account that I hadn't posted here.

Here's my take on a former Jedi (post-Order 66) working the lower levels of Coruscant, Jax Pavan from the Coruscant Nights series.  I kept his look really simple, as I was just getting started in customizing at the time.  This was also one of my stabs at customizing new weapons, as his blaster is cobbled together from a few different pieces.   I'll probably go back to re-do him at some point:

Here's my take on Dass Jennir's look from the Blue Harvest comic arc of Dark Times.  I'm probably most proud of the chest harness Dass is seen wearing, as I actually had to cut and piece the armor harnesses from the Matt Trakker fig (GIJoe 25th anny.) and then do a little bit of sewing---yes, sewing---to get it to fit correctly.  I think the new POC Duke head actually fits the character better, but the Trakker head was what I had available at the time.  The colors and weapons are in-line with the character as seen at the end of the Blue Harvest arc of Dark Times:

Title: Re: JediMerc's Customs (Updated! -- New Republic Jedi -- 8/10/11)
Post by: JediMerc on August 10, 2011, 01:04:04 PM
Well...my family finally got into our new home and finished renovating what we needed to, so...a chance to get some new customs out there!  I've got quite a few WIP's, including a version of Wyl Tarson (double agent - Rebellion comic series), Starkiller (Corellian Flight Suit), a clone bounty hunter, and a smuggler/part-time soldier during the time of the rebellion.  I'll be posting WIP pics of the clone bounty hunter in the next few days...

But first, here's a fig I'm really happy with how he turned out.  I wanted to blend my vision of what I have been reading with some of the artistic elements from the TOR smuggler character (chest belts).  Ever since seeing Luke in his Bespin fatigues in TESB, I've always liked thinking of the Jedi not in some simple brown/tan robe, but instead wearing clothing more like that of the typical citizen (albeit with some minor additions of armor, etc.) and using alternative weaponry along with their lightsabers.  That's why I've always been fascinated by the  descriptions of the members of the Jedi Order during the NJO novels, wearing the gear and clothing that I always envisioned since 1980:

Jayce Rellin (New Republic Jedi)
 - Rellin was once a member of a police force on a small backwater planet in the outer rim, but that was before galactic hero Luke Skywalker established his Jedi Academy following the Galactic Civil War.  Skywalker followed up on reports of individuals performing strange or extraordinary acts and tested them for force sensitivity.   Skywalker traveled to meet Rellin after word reached him of a law officer who, while in pursuit of a gang of local thugs who had attempted to rob a bacta processing center,  single-handedly---and with no seemingly available weapons or tools---"grabbed hold of the air surrounding a building" that had been detonated by the thugs to slow his pursuit, slowly lowering it without allowing it to harm innocents who were inside.   After rescuing all inside, Rellin supposedly tracked the thugs in the hours after they scattered and, one by one, apprehended them following only the "scent of their fear".  His fellow officers were amazed and this tale was leaked to outside authorities, where it somehow was passed along to Master Skywalker.

Skywalker's tests found Rellin to possess above-average force sensitivity and he offered Jayce an opportunity to join the Jedi Order.  Rellin, without hesitation, accepted.  He became a Jedi Knight within 2 years of joining the order and is currently stationed along the Perlemian Trade Route, tracking pirates and assisting local planetary governments in economic and political disputes.  Recently, word has reached him that an invasion fleet of bio-organic make has breached known space and is heading toward his area of operations...

Very cool! what did you use to make him?

Thanks, GS, for taking a look!

Here's the parts I used:

head = Corran Horn (Legacy pilot and droid 2-pk)
torso = Han Solo - Medal Ceremony (VTC)
left bicep/forearms = Death Star Trooper (TAC)
right shoulder pauldron/armor = EVO Trooper (TAC)
hands = Rum Sleg (TLC)
upper legs = Tol Skorr (TLC comic pack) modded @ knee to accommodate lower legs
lower legs = Nicanas Tassu (TLC Geonosis Arena 2-pk)
feet = Major Panno (TLC)
chest strap = plastic cable tie, painted
holster = Bespin Luke (TVC)
blaster = Han Solo - Sandstorm (TLC) -- modded (i.e. scope removed)

Is that possibly an adult version of Lorn Pavan's son mentioned in the "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter" novel?

Yep, it is.  He's much older in the Coruscant Nights series, after Order 66.

If you aren't into the e-book thing, I think they just announced that they're selling the series all in one paperback as a 3-for-1 deal...

Thanks to everyone who checked out the New Republic Jedi posted recently!

Here's a WIP pic of a clone bounty hunter, using the AT-RT Driver as the base fig.  I plan on repainting the entire torso/waist and adding some armor along the way.  Let me know what you think and suggestions are always welcome:

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I am so tempted to paint up a RC helmet I got from Clonehead and use it on this guy, but then it would make him look distinctly more like a specialized clone trooper instead of the "bounty hunter" look I've been slowly working toward.  We'll see what feels right the next time I get a chance to work on him...school's starting up in a week and customizing hits the back burner then!

You could use a Mando helmet on him OR you may want to put a Mando helmet faceplate into a Veers helmet and add a rangefinder.

The lower legs are from the TFU 5-pk (2009): Starkiller in heavy training gear.

The feet are from a Kashyyk trooper, repainted.

Well, here he is, finally finished: Desh Gannar...bounty hunter!

I originally wanted a helmet of some type for this guy, but none of the concoctions I used seemed to look right on him.  In the end, I found a breather mask (from some GIJoe fig) and it worked out much better than I had hoped.  He's got two looks: one with breather mask and one with cloak; I'm not sure which one I like him in better...

I also experimented in creating slight rust stains on his armor; some of his shoulder armor has dents and gashes, but I guess he hasn't changed his chest armor for awhile.

Let me know what you think!

That is a great looking custom! I vote for the first look with the mask. He looks more "real" to me that way. The Ki Adi cloak seems to take away from your work weathering his armor with that bandolier in the front. I really like this guy, well done!

Yepper, first one.

Who knows about a helmet one day? Leave it to Clint and Jay to put together some concoction that would work for this, but it looks great with just the breather.

Thanks for the recommendation...I liked the Ki Adi cloak, but you're right: it covers too much of the fine details I put into his armor.
Who knows?  Maybe that breather will come in useful if he's ever on a post-apocalyptic desert world tracking a bounty... ;)

@ JediMinstrel -- Yeah, that's the one I decided would be his "definitive" look...the cloak just covered too many details in the paint job.  Thanks for checking it out!

@ Tamer -- I guess it's the "Vader effect": breath masks just rule (in my book).    Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

@ SithHappens -- I appreciate the love; can't wait to see what you've got on tap next!

@ drod26 -- Thanks: I'm always really, really careful about choosing the parts that go into my figs.  For me, it has to fit "just right" or I'll scrap it and start over completely.  (Part of my perfectionist complex, I suppose.   ::))   I love these particular Starkiller legs and, for the longest time, could not find something that they seemed to go well with.  I'm really pleased with how everything came together on this fig too!

I appreciate everyone taking the time to stop in and check out the latest figs!  I'm working on paint apps and color choices for Wyl Tarson (double agent - Rebellion comic series) and Starkiller (Corellian flight gear)....unfortunately, with the start of the school year, it may a little longer before I can get these guys up and posted.

@ Mandolore_1992: Thanks for the comments; it's always nice to know your work is appreciated!

@ Tamer: Thanks for the fp!  I totally understand trying to do everything and be everywhere at once; no worries!  So many awesome customizers here who deserve to have their work highlighted for all to see!

@ Orangepeace: Maybe this guy IS Boba, using an alternate ID...oh wait, technically he is!  Thanks for the comments!

@ Wookie-Balls: Wow, definitely inspiring!  Yeah, I was torn between which look to go with and I think I've let the breather mask grow on me more than the cloak, but that's why it's all removable, right?  Thanks for the comments!

@ DarthDaddy: With all you've got going on, I was glad to see you could check this guy out.  I'm always keeping up with you blog and new work, though I don't comment as regularly as I should....

@ lucasclones: Thanks, I appreciate you taking a look!

@ Fiala: Thanks; I'm slowly working on the realistic elements of armor weathering, laser blast damage, etc. and trying to use it to enhance the look of my figs, but not overdo it at the same time.  It's nice to know that people are picking up on those slight details that, I feel, make-or-break a custom fig.

It's been a good, long while since I updated with a custom fig; been working on lots, but most remain unfinished on my workbench.  Kids, school, new house: not much time for the hobby!

Anyway, here's a WIP I've been tinkering with for the last 6 months: a Starkiller (Corellian Flight Suit) from TFU.
I've gone through about 18 different pairs of upper legs until I found ones that looked the best.  Finding the right pieces for the biceps and forearms was by far the most difficult task for me in getting the fig to this point.  I have yet to add the third strap to the front of his flight jacket and, though it's not screen accurate, I'm thinking of leaving the collared piece I used because it just looks good to me.  Next step: finding time to paint this dude up!  Thanks for taking a look!

I appreciate everyone taking a look; no problem on the recipe.  Here's what I used:

head = Starkiller (TFU 5-pk TRU exclusive)
collar = Starkiller (TFU 5-pk Bounty Hunter version); modded from plastic cloak on his Mando suit
torso = TLC Hrchek Kal-Fas (collar was shaved down a bit & straightened in the back; straps on front & back of jacket = pieces cut from Indiana Jones bag strap; also shaved the ends of the straps down so they fit flush against the jacket)
right bicep = TLC Boba Fett
left bicep = TVC Bom Vimdin
forearms = TLC Hrchek Kal Fas
gloved hands = TAC Han Solo (MF pilot)
waist belt = TAC Boba Fett (animated version)
waist cloth (heavily modded) = Felucian (TFU 5-pk)
upper legs = ??
thigh straps = TLC Nikto Gunner
lower legs = TLC Obi-Wan Kenobi (AotC version) --- shaved the front pant ruffles around the knee caps down
feet = TLC Cade Skywalker (comic pack)

he is definitely looking awesome.i can identify some of the parts you used so far,but where is the torso from?can you give out the recipe for this guy by any chance?

Awesome!  That's the best looking WIP!  Can't wait to see the finished product.  Is it ok to ask for the recipe?

I appreciate everyone taking a look; no problem on the recipe.  Here's what I used:

head = Starkiller (TFU 5-pk TRU exclusive)
collar = Starkiller (TFU 5-pk Bounty Hunter version); modded from plastic cloak on his Mando suit
torso = TLC Hrchek Kal-Fas (collar was shaved down a bit & straightened in the back; straps on front & back of jacket = pieces cut from Indiana Jones bag strap; also shaved the ends of the straps down so they fit flush against the jacket)
right bicep = TLC Boba Fett
left bicep = TLC Nikto Gunner
forearms = TLC Hrchek Kal Fas
gloved hands = TAC Han Solo (MF pilot)
waist belt = TAC Boba Fett (animated version)
waist cloth (heavily modded) = Felucian (TFU 5-pk)
upper legs = ??
thigh straps = TLC Nikto Gunner
lower legs = TLC Obi-Wan Kenobi (AotC version)
feet = TLC Cade Skywalker (comic pack)

Now that's CUSTOMIZING!!!

I totally get where you're coming from JM; the only reason I went this route is because I picked up multiples of the figs I used.  It happened to work out, but it did take an exceptionally long time to find the exact parts I wanted/needed to do this guy.

Thanks for checking this guy out!

starkiller is one of my favorite new characters, and hasbro haven't seemed to get him right yet so making that sacrifice of breaing down those figures might be worth it,and your concept is awesome.I think it was stronox who did an amazing one with the bandages.I wish I had the link, but i'm sure you know who,and what i'm talking about.when you do finish him,i'm sure he'll look awesome.

Post by: JediMerc on March 12, 2012, 06:48:23 PM
It's been a long time coming, but this version of Starkiller is finally finished!  This has really been a labor of love for me, as figuring out exactly what parts I needed---and then slowly but surely acquiring them---was extremely time-consuming, to say the least.  My goal was to create the closest representation of Galen Marek in his flight suit that I could, but some liberties were certainly taken for aesthetic purposes.

I kept the collar, though not screen accurate, because it looked good to me but also because I do not sculpt as of yet.  That piece allowed me to obtain the collared look I was going for without having to resort to buying/making anything else.  The front jacket straps took the greatest amount of time before I actually found something that was pliable, yet durable, enough to allow me to create the "fallen strap" look he has on the jacket in the game.  (In case anyone's wondering, it's a piece of the strap from TVC Yavin Han's medal, shaved down & modified.)  I also shaved down the leg straps: they just looked a bit too thick in their original form.

I believe that this is the best paint job I've done, so I'm proud of myself to say the least.  The images I had to work from generally did not show his lower half from the waist down, so the coloring is designed to resemble what I saw in the few screen shots available of this outfit.

This fig turned out much better than I had hoped...I was afraid I'd butcher it in the process but, thankfully, that didn't happen!  Without further ado, here's Starkiller (Corellian Flight Suit):

All I can say is that I want one, and I have a serious case of Custom Figure Envy as it's one of my favorite customs of the year so far. I love the collection of parts, the whole thing just works really well.

Very inspiring indeed.

By the way, someone on another board I posted this on told me that Hasbro has announced a version of Starkiller in this particular outfit...I was under the assumption it's just the new pilot/rebel hero outfit due in June/July.  Does anyone know if there's any truth to this?  Just curious... ;)

Hey there everyone...still customizing, but finding time to photograph and post these has been extremely difficult...kids are getting older, soccer games to go to, oh, and keeping up with work.  Finally found 30 minutes to myself and figured I should start to get some of my recent customs over here.  It's been a loooooong while!

I've been tinkering lately with alternate outfits for popular characters, particularly Han Solo and the Skywalkers (Luke, Anakin, and Cade).  More of those images posted in the near future...alright, now onto some new work!

Unlike some, I thoroughly enjoyed the dark approach the authors of the NJO took with the saga characters, but I was still disappointed at how prominent the standard Jedi robes seemed to be. I wanted to see some armored Jedi, dawg-gone-it!  So I made my own (in the design of something I expected to see in that series).  Here's Master Luke Skywalker, of the NJO.  He's not entirely finished; I want to dirty him up some more with a few washes, but that will have to wait for the time being.

This will be the first of a series of Skywalkers I've done up in alternate outfits:

Also been doing a lot of simple parts-swapping as I've been unable to find a decent chunk of time to paint many figures lately.

Here's the second in the line of alternate outfits I've targeted for the Skywalker family...this time it's Cade Skywalker, looking more like he's decided to take the path of the Jedi following the events of Legacy: War (but not quite buying into it entirely):

No problem, JM.

The armor comes from the GIJoe Wraith (25th Anv Collection); I shave down the shoulders a bit to all his arms more range of motion and cut the stomach guard off it.  It looks much bulkier in its original form.

I knew the chest armor but the rest of the body, I'm not sure.

Oops, sorry.

The body (torso, upper legs, biceps) is mostly from the Luke (Dark Empire comic pack).  Head is from the Luke/Deena stealth armor comic pack (I painted the hair with a couple of brown/gold washes).

The shin armor is from the standard, SA Vader.  The forearm gauntlets come from an EVO trooper or Imp Jump trooper (can't remember which one exactly) from one of the TRU Starkiller 5-packs.  The open right hand with armor plate comes from an ROTS AT-RT driver (2005 line); the other is just from a clone trooper I had lying around.

The holster is from a Gen. Hawk (POC) fig; the other belt was in my accessory bin.

Very Well Done!  I'm impressed with the parts list.  Always great to hear the various parts used for any custom.  I have yet to do much taking apart.  Alway afraid to break or rip something.  At least when I use Joe figures, there's the option of just unscrewing the legs.  Recently, I have taken a dremel to some heads I've taken off of older SW figs to fit on necks on either SW or Joes.  Those will be some, hopefully soon, posts I'll be doing.  Again, great work.

Jedi Minstrel: Thanks for your feedback!  I totally understand the fear of ruining a fig---especially when they cost you $9-12 these days.  I hesitated for the longest time to take my figs apart, but once I did (and realized that they could be left in boiling water for a loooong time without any damage), the sky became the limit.  I have no problem taking any fig apart now.  You figs are always cool-looking, so I don't think that has hampered your work in the least bit!

WB: Really appreciate you stopping in; I 've been following your work since eary in the year and I am continuously amazed at how creative your parts choices and color schemes are in your figs.  I'm a HUGE OT fan too and I've always seemed to gravitate more to Luke than to Han, etc.  (I think Luke's character gets a bad rep, despite the whiny-ness in EpIV and early EpV).  Loking forward to seeing more awesome takes on OT characters from you; your recent alternate Bespin fatigues Luke is AWESOME!

DarthDaddy: Thanks for the comments; it's good to be posting again, though it my awhile again before I can get more up on the site.  Regarding the scarf, I totally agree: great accessory.  If you happen to have any extras of those casted scarfs in the future, let me know...I'd be interested in a couple!

Good to see your update. I can sure relate to the lack of time thing.

Thanks for the comments; it sure does feel good to be able to post some of the stuff I've done recently after not having any time to photograph for such a long time.

I totally agree about the guy selling his sculpts: waaaay too high a price.  Still cool to look at nonetheless.

Thanks for the comments; here's what I used:

Head = Luke Skywalker (Deena/Luke stealth armor comic pack)
Torso/biceps/upper legs = Luke (Dark Empire comic pack)
Forearm gauntlets = Imp EVO or Jump trooper from TFU 5-pk
Shin guards/lower legs = Darth Vader (TAC EpIV)
Open right hand = AT-RT Driver (RotS - 2005)
Left hand = TVC15 clone trooper
Chest armor = GIJoe Wraith (25th anniversary)
Holster = GIJoe Gen. Hawk (POC)
Top belt = ? (fodder bin)

Alright, here's one more.  The progenitor of the line itself: Anakin Skywalker.

I started putting this one together quite awhile ago and then I just lost track of him.  Found him again recently and decided to finish up some details on the chest armor paint, finally photograph him, and be done with it.

This was largely put together when the CW series was first getting started and I was inspired by the somewhat armored look of the Jedi in the show (despite still wanting more gritty realism).  So I pulled some parts together and came up with this:

Love what you've done to bring this Anakin together - the over all look of the figure is so, so, so  good it almost hides the subtle parts choices and construction! He looks like he's just been popped off a card! Well done yet again mate  - I can't wait to see a family shot of these guys all together. PLease tell me that you have a Ben Skywalker in the pipe line????

Cheers!

Post by: JediMerc on September 27, 2012, 04:11:12 PM
I've got a couple of Luke Skywalker outfits that Hasbro's put out over the past few years that I feel needed some slight improvements.  I targeted Jedi Luke (Death Star) with chest flap down and some parts changes to the Yavin Ceremony Luke as well.  No paint; just part swaps and accessory additions (like the flap on Luke's Jedi garb).

I used an Exacto to file off the peeled flap from the TAC version of Jedi Luke (the one with the interchangeable chest) and glued it onto an extra Jedi Luke I had.  It lines up perfectly with the flap on his outfit and I think it looks pretty good.  (I probably won't be buying any of Hasbro's obvious updates on this figure now.)

The Yavin Ceremony Luke uses Bespin Han's upper legs and the lower legs/feet from a Saga "vintage" Endor Han; I also swapped out the Bespin Luke holster to this one.  I wanted to use the Bespin Luke head sculpt because I've always pictured him using this outfit on smuggling trips, etc., with Han in between EpIV and EpV.  Regardless, I like the look of the upcoming Yavin Ceremony Luke coming in the new Legacy line, so I'll probably pick that one up to swap out with this one.  Until then, here's my slight fixes (and, IMO, better results):

Those Lukes looke awesome!

Not sure if my custom was any inspiration, but I did a Ceremonial Luke almost identical to yours back in July.

I trimmed the bottom of the boots down to make him the same height as Bespin & Jedi Luke, and added the feet from a Baron Fel officer figure so he didn't have those tiny little feet.

I  had the pieces for the Yavin Luke laying around for awhile waiting for the right parts to fall into place.  I did come across yours back in the summer and it looked great; I'm sure it got me thinking about the parts options at the time.  I knew i had to get rid of the black thigh "holster" from the original fig: it just seemed awfully out of place.  I also opted for the lower legs from an extra Endor Han I had lying around instead of the Bespin Han lower legs...there was just an added thickness to the legs that looked better to me.  It looks like we both went with the Bespin holster instead.  I not a huge fan of the DS/Resurgence head, opting for the Bespin version (until something better comes along).   That new Legacy version of Yavin Luke looks to have a killer head sculpt with it, so I'll likely swap that for the one I have on there now.

With very little time to paint lately, I've taken to quick 20 minute NPKB's.  I've always wanted a version of Solo in an Imp Pilot outfit (prior to becoming the famed scoundrel we love), so I put one together recently.

I also came across an image of Solo in a blue shirt and white/light tan jacket commanding a fleet of New Republic Star Destroyers in the recent Crimson Empire III comic series; lo and behold, I had the parts to mimic this look perfectly

Here they are:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.

The NR Han was really simple to make; here's the recipe:

head = Bespin Han (TVC)
torso/jacket/lower arms = Biggs Darklighter (TAC)
upper arms = McQuarrie Concept Snowtrooper (TAC)
hands = ??? (fodder bin)
legs/feet = McQuarrie Concept Luke Skywalker (TAC)
holster = Bespin Han (TVC

The Bespin Han head sculpt doesn't fit perfectly on the Biggs torso, so I used a dab of poster tack---which you can get at any home improvement store---to keep it on more tightly (and it doesn't damage your figs if you want to remove it later).

Post by: JediMerc on February 23, 2013, 08:18:20 AM
With the new custom contest on EpVII character takes going on here and @ Yakface.com, I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring.  It's been awhile since I posted a new custom; ah, such is life.

Here's a character I've been thinking of as some kind of trusted adviser for an older Master Luke Skywalker (and one member of a rather small Jedi Order).  He'd be one of only a handful of Jedi that actually have been trained, as Luke was somewhat fearful for a time of potentially training another Force-user that might fall to the dark side.  In my mind, this guy (name: TBD) would likely be stationed on a dry backwater, Outer Rim world (Tatooine, Saluecami, etc.), decided to use a modified vibro-blade staff that can rebel lightsaber strikes, and be dressed in a dignified, but utilitarian way suited for life on those types of planets.

I recently bought a pack of Aves Fixit sculpt and I've used this character as a way to practice simple sculpting (belts, harnesses, etc.) so I can improve my skills over time.  (*Sorry for the blurry photo of the backside: my Canon CyberShot doesn't always focus as well as I'd like for up-close images like custom figures...and I'm not ready to invest in a better camera at this point either.)

I posted this guy over on the current custom content site as well, but also here for those who don't frequent that forum:

While I'm in the process of planning a color scheme for the EpVII character concept, I'm also continuing parts selections and basic sculpting for a Starkiller (Arena Battle Gear) that has been #1 on my list of customs I'd like to get to.

I still have the belt buckle and side nodules to sculpt and attach, as well as the back flap for the chest harness (which I'll be sculpting sometime soon).  I'm still debating whether to go with the front harness straps---currently from a GIJoe fig---I've included here or to sculpt my own later...

Anyway, here's my TFUII Starkiller WIP:

Here's a couple more shots of some of the detail work on the pauldron, pauldron "padding" that was sculpted to fit the figure's shoulder proportions, figure back (and strap sculpts).  That's a Vader helmet, carved up and sanded down and I decided to add ball-hinged legs (from the SOTDS Han Solo - Search for Luke Skywalker bp).

I will be slimming down the soft goods kama (both front and back, since it's a bit too long for my liking), though I haven't decided yet on painting it or soaking it in watered down acrylics.

I appreciate the comments, especially coming from great customizers like all of you.  I continue to follow, and be amazed at, what you can do with paint apps and sculpt/casting work.  Tamer, we've got a great community here and you're a huge part of what makes coming to this site enjoyable.  Thanks!

As for this figure, I'm still experimenting on how to get the folds and details into the 'look' of the cloth sculpts.  I originally started out wrapping individual lengths of Fixit sculpt, but they ended up looking too much like garden hoses around the legs.  I pressed those out and followed the lengths and defined them with both sides of an Exacto blade (both the razor and the flat side) to give alternating definition to the wraps.  They aren't perfect, but they are light years beyond what that first attempt looked like!  (Everyone's lucky I didn't take pics...)

Thanks for checking my progress with this guy; more to come shortly (on both this and the EpVII character previously posted)!

Really impressed with these last two offerings.  Especially the sculpt work.  You've always had a good eye for kitbashes, so I wasn't surprised to see you pull out some killer sculpt work too.  It's great that you had the ability to self edit where you saw fit as well.  A promising future I see before you.

Was finally able to finish up my entry for the ISY-Yakface EpVII character contest!  I previously posted this guy as a WIP, but he's all painted up and complete now.

FYI: I went with a weapon other than a lightsaber just because I think it would be more realistic that not every jedi in the upcoming ST would have one (i.e. maybe the Empire had confiscated Ilum's supplies, destroyed all natural crystals...or something like that  ;)).

Anyway, here's Harn Vandeth, Jedi Master (NJO):

This is very cool! I like the double blades a lot. It's cool to see a Jedi that kicks it old school like that.

This is one cool Jedi. One of the best I have seen in awhile and not just for the construction which looks awesome, but also the thought of what a Jedi could really look like outside of the norm we have all grown to just accept. Lots of good thought on this one. Back on the front page.

I love this Jedi concept. This looks like something that could actually be in the movie.

Thanks, Spry.  I'd love to be able to pump out as many phenomenal ones as you do; for now, I'll have to over-obsess about details on the few I can get done.

Starkiller has already undergone some tweaking and I've changed the belt twice...gonna try to get this one out next!

Thanks Tamer...I just hope J.J. does the upcoming sequel right.  I need me some cool-looking Jedi (or at least Force-users)!

Thanks for the comments, Barry!  It's not always easy to come into a community of artists like this and compare ones work to the awesomeness that others produce.  It's he positivity if this community that inspires people like me to take risks like learning to sculpt, try different techniques, etc. without dear of being judged too harshly.  I appreciate you taking the time to thumb through my earlier work too!

You nailed the look of a modern Jedi... He looks like he can take on starkiller without any issues. Nicely done, an 1 of the best entry in the contest.

This Jedi is like a blend of the OT and Ralph McQuarrie's conceptual art. I think that combination would please a lot of people. This is a very nice piece.

The part combo and sculpting are just great -  I really like this Jedi.  I'm also a fan of the accessory that you went with - I could actually see Hasbro doing something similar.

Thanks, DS.   I'm hoping we get somethng "new" in terms of the Jedi appearance from Abrams and the concept crew; no boring tan robes!  By the way, good to see you back here on the boards!

Thanks for the comments!  The parts really came together pretty easily for this one and the chest harness was my first stab at sculpting anything (so I wanted to keep it uber-simple).  I certainly want to see lightsabers in the new sequel, but just don't want them to over-do it (a la the PT, at least in my opinion).

Interesting that in the "Dawn of the Jedi" from Dark Horse Comics, Jedi in their infancy are using swords.  I may use this idea for some new Jedi.  thanks for the inspiration.

Gosh, it's been a LONG time since I've been able to hit the bench and get some customs photographed...I've got a new Starkiller and Cade Skywalker that've been finished for ages, but school and the kids' sports schedules are keeping me from having enough time to create or post anything new lately.  One of these days... ::)
