$3 each

This is the "Iconic Box" that owes its existence to Spookymufu and his excellent screen-shots.  The surface is a roughened texture and size is slightly over 1" cubed.  Model is supplied "in the white" at the moment, painted models are for photographic purposes only.  I am working on the ability to provide colored models.  I'll update once that is an option, as well as price increases for color.

$4 each

I call this the "Spry Crate," as Sprywalker was kind enough to loan me the master for this one.  It is somewhat larger than the previous "iconic box" and thus uses more resin.

This ammo can was provided to me by Psyclone.  As molded, it has a removable lid.  It bears a passing resemblance to an open Roughtote, if used without the lid.

$2.50 each, without lid

This box is cast from a Mega-Bloks master, found in their HALO sets.  There is a removable lid to them, but I have not yet molded it.  Currently, the lidless boxes look to me like they would be great in a vendor's stall in some open-air marketplace.  Once I have a mold of the lid, I will update availability and pricing to indicate such.

These are small, simple cannisters, possibly lunch containers for workmen or refrigerated sample-cases for a medical crew.  These are an original design by me.

$2.50 each.

This box is molded from the ammo-can that has shipped with several GI Joe figures - Iron Grenadier, Rock-n-Roll, and Heavy Duty, I think.  It was originally cast with a peg on one side to use as a backpack.  I have removed the peg and cast it with a flat side for use as a cargo container.

Wow, did you use that Maul head I sent you? You did a perfect job in casting that, buddy!

Love the casts of the crates as well and using the ammo pack is a splendid idea.

Have you thought about opening an eCrater store? I know Stocos28 and Starwarsgeek have such a store. Not nearly enough traffic as eBay, but if you promote it enough in the community, people will find you soon enough.

Yes, I've been quite pleased with how well the HD ammo can blends in as a cargo box!  The training remote was a total shocker - I wasn't sure it was going to work at all, but it did and did so marvelously!

MA - do you want your packs in the "photo-shoot gray" tone?

I'm setting up the other comic-pack black Biker Scout head and the Scorch backpack in molds tonight.  Should have good molds ready to cast sometime tomorrow and will add them into the catalog.  Also, I should be adding a few other existing molds, like the Heavy Duty can, once I get them cast in gray.  Was away from home most of the day toay, fetching my son back from college to spend Christmas with the family.

Sure gray looks pretty cool! Can't wait to receive the two packages! (First one still hasn't came yet. Probably cause its Christmas and the mail is probably super busy!) When i get my package i will check and see if you missed a head or something! Then i'll let ya know if ya did! (Your so awesome i bet you didnt miss one! ;)) So yopu are still doing the two biker scout heads, the RC Boss pack, RC Scorch pack and the last CW RC Boss gun. Correct?

Post by: DocOutlands on December 31, 2012, 08:46:08 AM
So one of the things that has taken over my project time has been dio-accessories.  But not just any accessories.  I've been working on converting/cannibalizing pieces from Glenn Williams' 28mm wargame paper-models into action-figure-scale items.  His latest release, Cargo Bay, is just almost perfectly usable with action figures as-is.  His "wide door," though, is of course sized for minis.  So I took it upon myself to fix that.  So that's where I am right now - a 4.5"-tall x 2.25"-wide bulkhead/blast door with a degree of wall detailing.

Then it hits me.

Make it part of a wall series.

So I'm adding design elements in the roughly 7/8" space above the door-frame to create a 6" tall by 4" wide wall-panel that has a heavy-duty door.  This gives a scale 9' high ceiling, which to me has a very comfortable "look" to it, with a 6' width, just enough for the door-frame.  But the width is now under consideration.  Do I want - that is, will customers buy - a 6"x6" panel?  That has the advantage of being rotatable in 4 orientations, but requires a bit more attention to making sure all elements look right from all directions.  Is 6"x4" better?  It'll be cheaper.  What about the door itself?  Should it be fixed or functional/removable?  Or should I offer both options?  (The door-frame is inherently double-sided - buy two and put them together back-to-back.  There'll be no detailing on the cast that has to match up.)

These are pressing questions, as they greatly affect the immediate future of the project & getting it molded.  I could process a 6"x4" non-functioning/fixed door in the next thirty minutes and be turning out wall-panels from the mold by supper-time today.  A 6"x4" functioning door would be almost as fast, but require a larger mold/more mold-material.  A 6"x6" panel is gonna take more time regardless, because I'll have to work out additional details to add into the extra space.  Thoughts, anyone?

(I like bringing stuff like this to the 'Yards as a beta-group, because I think our membership is likely a very good micro-sample of the hobby - everything from kids to grandparents, employed to struggling, collectors to players, artists to appreciators, figure-posers, dio-builders, photographers, dabblers.  When you tell me how to earn your money, you've told me how to earn money from a much larger population of clients.)

Post by: DocOutlands on December 31, 2012, 09:45:03 AM
Well, while I'm pondering, I'm going to get on with it and mold just the doorframe/soor as a single piece that can be added to a blank wall - foamcore, styro, corroplast, mat-board, whatever.  It'll be about 1/4" thick, 4" wide and 5" tall.  Probably my biggest project to date.

If you want your very own holo-spy inside Production Platform 3, then I encourage you to check out the otherwise innocuous page of one Michael McNeill (http://www.facebook.com/Michael.McNeill.940).  Somehow, he has an up-to-the-second inside eye on what is happening.  Raw pics as they happen!  Never miss a moment of PP3 action again!

So, if you don't follow me on Facebook, here's a look at this weekend's MAJOR project.  This is easily my largest project to date, in every sense - physical measurements (4"x5"), amount of resin used (3oz!), effort to create the original, everything.  This door started out as a small paper model from my friend Glenn Williams at Finger & Toe Models (http://www.fingerandtoe.com) - his newest release, in fact, Cargo Bay.  I took the little door, about 2.5" tall originally, and modified it until I had something that would look good behind an action figure.  But it was a flat piece of art, and you *know* I loves me some resin and 3D detailing.  So I got to work and made some more modifications and cut and stacked and glued until I had a 3D doorway and door for my lads.  So I molded it and cast it today.  It is a bit rough.  At first, I was so offended by the resulting product that I declared it unworthy of even being given away.  But as I cleaned the very first piece up, and as numerous people began commenting and txting me on the piece, I grudgingly came to the conclusion that people might, possibly, be interested in this ready-made door.

Now, Glenn designed this door as a military door, found onboard star-faring warships.  As such, it looks pretty heavy-duty - maybe serving as a brig/containment/pressure/blast/airlock portal.  If you are building a diorama or display and want something like that, you can now have one with just an email to me and a mere pittance.  You see, I'm not at all satisfied with how this door turned out.  I plan to redo it in the same design but from material which I feel will be more molding-friendly.  I have three more door designs, all similar to this one, that I plan to make and cast.  In fact, I have an entire array of wall-panels in mind to design and execute, including windows.  My plan is to base them around 6"x6" tiles to make standardizing layouts easy.  This would give a rather spacious scale-9' ceiling for figures to operate in as a basic set, but wall panels could be stacked in order to create warehouse or hangar-bay walls.  A square wall-panel would allow for placement in multiple orientations, allowing for an inherent degree of customization.

But all that is down the road.  Right now, I have a door.  A solid door that is flat on the back, allowing two to be placed together for a double-sided vignette.  And this door used up all but maybe 2oz of HSIII mold material that I had just bought last week.  I didn't realize it would take up so much.  So, with an eye toward the future and turning today's door into a doorway to better things, I have decided I *will* make it available for sale, even if just to keep my losses from putting a blight on a project I have been pursuing for ... well, years.  Each piece will need clean-up - there are extruded areas to be trimmed away and a gap along the door-to-frame seam that needs to be filled.  The edges of the piece need a good amount of sanding to smooth them down.  Maybe you expect that from a resin piece, especially from a manufacturer so small that calling them "garage kits" is giving him delusions of grandeur, but it rankles me deeply.  I want to give my customers a better product than that - and one day I will.  But today, this is the best I can offer.  Don't misunderstand me - the piece is entirely usable as it is!  Some paint and weathering, maybe some graffitti or labels, and you are good to go.  In fact, I have a number of small control-box greeblies molded and I will throw one in as a random door-control with each door you buy.  If you want to construct a double-sided door, let me know and I'll make sure you get matching boxes for your doors. (NOT recommended for prison-cell doors!)

If you are interested, the cost per door is $7 plus shipping, which I can handle however you like.  I prefer USPS Priority with insurance and delivery confirmation, which will run slightly more than the cost of the door itself, but the advantage is if you want several, the cost doesn't go up until the box won't hold any more.  So feel free to drop me a PM or an email and let's talk!

Doc, this has got me thinking............We could use a Tantive 4 door, which also happens to be the same door we see R2 and 3po hide behind on Tatooine. Also some Death Star and Tantive walls could be done in the same 6x6 modular layout.......

Jay - get crackin, man!  These door pieces would look MUCH better with some of your lads in front of them!

Spook - so you see where I'm going with this.  :D  If you could get me some really good screen-shots of the doors, I'll try to get the patterning laid out.

Clint - The door uses so close to 3oz of resin that there's not enough left for much of anything else.

Thanks, guys!!

Imperial "Bridge Pit Console," as seen on the Executor during the Battle over Endor.  This is the first pull from a new mold just made this weekend.  If you don't like the panel lines, you can fill them with a gap-filling superglue and sand it smooth.  Two connection ports are on either side, allowing you to run cabling or to connect multiple units together using a small piece of dowel or similar.  Surface left undecorated so you can use any of the myriad of graphics out there - extra GI Joe decals, HangarBay94 control panels, or whatever you fancy.

$7.50, molded in white
(*many* thanks to RebelScummer Daigo-Bah for the outstanding work on the screen captures!!)

Thanks, guys!  I do occasionally get air-bubbles, in fact the test console has one in the "ring" on the face of the display, but I am fortunate in my choice of materials all working together smoothly for some very nice casts.

I checked ESB footage of the Executor bridge as they review the Hoth prob-droid intel and the "pit" arrangement is different from that during the Battle Over Endor footage in RotJ - including a smaller "connector" console that differs significantly.  I'll be working that up as well, and will likely make a turn-key "pit kit" for each movie.

If anyone has any details on what the Imperial techs were sitting on in the bridge pit, I would *deeply* appreciate you sharing it with me!!

As I said on fb, good looking stuff Doc. One easy way to get rid of the block look would be to simply tape over that lower section to the edges. I had to tape a few things and it leaves a perfect flat surface .

I posted this over in the Blogs area, but then it occurred to me not everyone reads my blog - but tonnes of folks read posts in this thread, so I'm cross-posting for greater visibility...

Hello, fellow 'Yarders!  I've been quiet for far FAR too long, I know!  Quiet is NOT inactive, tho!  I'm having internet connection challenges at home, new-phone struggles as I adapt to my new piece of kit (it's a joy, btw!), and the ever-popular daily routine of WORK. Blech!  Some of you already know about Production Platform 3's new Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Production-Platform-3/500033033394127).  If you don't, let me encourage you to check it out!  My new phone has made keeping up on Facebook ridiculously easy and the phone actually has a fairly decent camera on it, too.

So I've been busy - Darth Optimus has been an *excellent* gent about loaning out a number of sweet originals for me to make molds of: heads, cargo boxes (yes, the old Kenner Dagobah crates are available as repros!), and now melee weapons are underway.  I'm still looking for a storefront (leaning towards ecrater.com - looking for input) to tie the Facebook page to, but I'm not letting the dust gather on the mold-making supplies!

If you are on Facebook, be sure to to drop by Production Platform 3's new page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Production-Platform-3/500033033394127) and give it a Like so you can stay up-to-date on new goodies as they appear!

Coming soon: engine pods!

It used an entire box of HS-III & right now eats up 8oz of resin. I'm gonna work with it this week to see what I can do to get that reduced.

Fantastic piece, Doc! Is there a way you could insert some other material in the thick parts to save on resin during the pour? Wood, foam, legos, etc?

That's on this weekend's schedule, guys.  Hopefully I can make a reusable plug so that I can cut back on the amount of resin and have the added benefit of a hollow casting for folks to drill out and light.

Many thanks, sir! Hopefully, I'll make that happen today or tomorrow.

Just a quick update this morning.  I'm working on a way to get the computer consoles to cast hollow. First test *should* be this evening, so everybody keep your fingers crossed! I've got some casting & photography to do for the store, so keep an eye out there, too. That may happen this evening, as well. Yes, this *will* include 3 (or 4!) sizes of turbines as well as door control panels.

Facebook page and storefront updated today.  9 new products listed as well as enhanced pics of the Echo Base Computer.

First up, a look at a sample command-post made with several of the new computer consoles. (http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u239/LosLejanos/Outland%20Station/molding%20and%20casting/production%20platform%203/commandpost_zps08dc98af.jpg)

Did I mention they are hollow now?

There are three holes at the bottom of each side, allowing multiple units to be connected together.  Two of the holes on each side are complete, allowing a dowel to pass through several units to create a more stable display.  These holes are sized to accept Lego-type blocks to connect, as well, so you can connect cabling to the units.  I hope to show something like that in the near future.

I've been talking to a couple of different 3D folks, one of whom is part of a team that makes and sells 3D-printed designs on Shapeways and the other uses CAD as part of his QA/QC work in the oilfield-tools business.  I've been digging into things and I'm seeing a pattern emerging from the fog.

3D printing is a LOT more expensive than resin-casting.
3D printing at its least expensive has a very gritty surface texture.
3D designs can be altered fairly quickly and easily.
There is a HUGE treasure trove of 3d designs available for sale.

I made a joke on facebook today that started me to thinking.  Would it be feasible to run a Kickstarter campaign for the purpose of raising the funds needed to purchase a rather substantial set of designs (I'm thinking primarily crates and other similar diorama accessories, but the wall/floor/ceiling modules are a distinct possibility), have them modified, have them printed in the finest detail possible on Shapeways, and then mold and cast them?  Kickstarter has turned into something of a pre-order catalog, which wasn't its intended purpose, but which it seems to function rather well at.  I know we have the hallway displays crew running a kickstarter in order to get the machine they need and a lot of people are jumping on that bandwagon.  (I would too, if I'd not lost my job!)  I'm not looking to buy a printer for Production Platform 3 (yet), just the plans, modifications, initial printing of a high-quality part, and the molding/casting supplies needed to turn out parts.  Would folks be tentatively interested in supporting such an effort?

Doc, this reminds me of the Indiegogo Campaign that Galactic Merchants started up to purchase their own 3D printer and supplies for their display diorama venture. They were fully funded in less than a week. I would go for it all. Get your designs and your printer man.

I had considered doing what they are doing MANY months ago, but wasn't convinced people would be interested in supporting such a venture.  Then the GM guys came along and went above and beyond my plans and folks jumped.  So now if I decide that based on*their* success to go with my own, are folks gonna balk, wondering "Why should I support this?  I just supported a similar one - what's different here?"

While they aren't available for sale yet, I do have to say I had a couple of "qualified successes" this week at casting torsos.  This will lead, hopefully, to things like removable armor and new BAD parts.  Weekend plans are to clean up one torso in order to test-fit original arms and waist-piece to the recast torso.

Also, half a dozen handheld tools made it into the molds and are turning out quite well.  Pics should be available over the weekend of those, as well.

So all in all, stay tuned!  Lots of new things are on the way!

Used to, you had to win a contest to pick up our parts in a color other than raw resin.  But from now until the calendar changes from March 31st to April 1st in the wee hours of the morning, you are a winner.  Every order of $100 or more in resin parts placed between now and 12:01am Central time on April 1st will receive a FREE Cargo Bay Starter Set cast in colored resin, colors selected at random and not likely to match each other at all.  This set sells for $18.50 uncolored, but can be yours in color for FREE.  Use them as they come, give them a quick black-wash, or do a light dry-brushing – no matter how you use them, your cargo bays will thank you.  Don't be an April Fool when you wake up on the 1st – order now and get your exclusive pre-colored Cargo Bay Starter Set!

Are. You. READY???

I give you a Production Platform 3 EXCLUSIVE head-sculpt, by noted sculptor Christopher Herman - the

V E R P I N E ! ! !

The Geonosian was apparently modeled rather closely on the EU Verpine. And now, you can build the builders of the B-Wing fighter and genius mechanics of the Rebellion for your very own!

This head comes in 3 pieces - the main skull and the two antennae, so a modicum of assembly is required. Also, depending on the body you opt to use, you may have to enlarge the socket to fit the neck-ball.

First true update in ages, it seems.  Wanted to share something that is actually underway now and not just planned.  I mentioned a few days ago on Facebook that we have designs up on Shapeways for blaster-crates derived from our Iconic Box designs and a totally new design-family of crates.  Well, we've placed the order for master-parts!  First up is a small gaming-scale corridor wall sample at 2"x2".  It is a small-scale version of an Econoliner design, being done both as proof-of-concept and as a viable product for tabletop gamers. We opted for one of the Interior Door designs because, well, functional doors are just cool. It will help us with visual proportions for the action-figure scaled products and with working out how thin we can go on pieces.  We've also ordered the shallow blaster crate (sized to accommodate 3 of the long blaster rifle/light repeating blaster based on the MG-34 that ships with the 3.75" BS Stormtrooper) and each of the three sizes of the FTM Crates.  For those interested, the dimensions of the FTM crates are:

FTM Cargo Crates
Standard:
interior – 3/8”deep, 13/16” wide, 1 5/16” long
exterior – 1/2” tall, 1” wide, 1 1/2” long

Large:
interior - 3/8”deep, 13/16” wide, 2 1/2” long
exterior - 1/2” tall, 1” wide, 2 11/16”

Long:
interior - 3/8”deep, 13/16” wide, 3 11/16” long
exterior - 1/2” tall, 1” wide, 3 15/16” long

So far, all our models are passing printing requirements!  We should have our samples in hand around August 8 and we'll post pics of the real things then.

A little something new.  Based on our Iconic Box design, we present to you the Blaster Rifle Crate!  Designed to hold 3 of the light repeating blasters that ship with figures like the 3.75" Black Series Stormtrooper, featuring integral divider racks and a close-fitting removable lid.

In addition, 4 other new crates and containers were added to the storefront over the weekend.  We are working on getting the Iconic Box and Scanner Box reprinted for molding and casting (help speed that process along - go buy some Blaster Crates!) as well as a series of new crates as seen in Attack of the Clones on Coruscant.

Check out the goods at http://productionplatform3.ecrater.com/ (http://productionplatform3.ecrater.com/)!

Thanks, we're really pleased with how it turned out!  We'll have our Iconic Box remastered soon using modifications we built into the Blaster Crate and then we'll have our first "Holy Grail" realized - an opening Iconic Box.

Also, just a quick mention - the Econoliner Walls prototypes are being printed RIGHT NOW! The first one was done today! We got a look at the pictures of the first piece and it looks very promising!  Once we have the pieces in hand, we'll be looking hard at getting our Kickstarter campaign underway. So stay tuned!
