Title: Goldleaderone's custom figures
Post by: Goldleaderone on October 19, 2010, 07:31:29 PM
What's this? Goldleaderone doing custom figures now? Yes that's right, you read correctly. I will say there won't be a lot of figures as I devote a lot of my time to vehicles, so I mind as well start this thread off with a bang.

Was anyone else upset when the Corran Horn figure was released, he was in an orange flightsuit and not his green flightsuit? I was.

Here's my first custom figure to kick off this thread: Corran Horn in green flightsuit (CorSec colors)

I know it's been a while since my last custom. Just taking a break really, I should be starting up after the new year. Anyway I whipped up a quick custom figure, nothing spectacular or anything. Took me about an hour-ish.

Very good, GL1.  A simple, yet elegant and effective custom.  Funny, Hasbro should really take a cue from all of us.

It finally came in! My custom head from thatsmyface.com. I gotta say they did a great job with it. I wanted it on a X-wing pilot figure but right now it only fits on a Snowspeeder pilot figure. I'll be using a Luke pilot figure regardless. He's short, as am I.

First here's a pic of me.

It looks kind of pebbly... what's the texture like?
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's custom figures
Post by: Goldleaderone on March 22, 2012, 07:09:21 PM
Yeah it's made of some sort of hard resin, and not the smooth plastic you would normally see on basic action figures. You have to be careful with these figures too. Knocking them around will damage them, so I wouldn't recommend these to little kids.

Now that is just too cool I do agree.

If I may ask, how much did it cost to have that head sculpted? And what process do you go through to get them your likeness?

Of course, I had to take this to the front page.

That is just plain fantastic! I have known about this for a while but it is a little pricey. Looks so cool though.
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's custom figures
Post by: Goldleaderone on March 23, 2012, 09:24:54 AM
Thanks guys! It is very cool to have your own action figure. I didn't realize my camera makes the head look like it has a bunch of white specks on it. With the naked eye its fine. I guess my camera picks up too much detail lol. Then again, with the white specks it does look like I was on Hoth haha.

Tamer, the head for the 4 inch figures start at $49.00. After you upload your photos, you have to line up positions on your face. It'll ask you, for example, to place dots on the bridge of your nose, tip of your lips, where the middle of your eyes are, etc. After that you get to choose what figure head size you want (the bigger the size the more expensive). Then the hairstyle and hair color. They also charge for shipping (obviously) and the quicker you want them to make it, the more expensive it becomes.

Overall, I do recommend something like this. To have your own, one of a kind figure is just awesome. Again, be very careful with these as they are very fragile.

Title: Re: Goldleaderone's custom figures
Post by: spudafett on March 31, 2012, 12:02:52 AM
I wonder if they use a CAD program and a laser engraver to carve out and "print" the heads.  That is probably why they use the harder resin.  I'm sure it's some kind of laser engraver/ 3d rendering printer...

and that would also explain the price...  which is way too much if you ask me.

What I did for my self custom was just found a figure that had a relatively close shape to my real head and then sculpted the hair and facial features that I could, then painted my facial hair style onto the figure.  At 1:18th scale you can get away with fudging the tiny details and still pass it off as yourself...

but then again, the product that they offer does look more professional and versatile.  Not to mention the paintwork is nice and crisp and probably wear proof!

I agree that it was a bit pricy, but for me its one of those "one of a kind" things I'd like to own. I ended up paying for it with some loose change around the house, no way I was taking money out of the bank for a little thing like that lol.

Did a few more custom figures last night. Just some head swapping, nothing special but I like these customs more because of who they are.

Body:  Corran Horn

He's becoming one of my favorite pilots. He is the player character in the original X-wing game for PC. He is seen piloting the lone Y-wing from Gold Squadron at the end of A New Hope (Gold 7).

I know its been a while customs-wise with me. Lately I've had my share of ideas for custom pilots. I knocked one out today.

Here is Commander Narra

(http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070717150040/starwars/images/8/81/CommanderNarra.jpg)  (http://i59.tinypic.com/29p6v7t.jpg)

Narra took over Red Squadron after Garven Dreis was killed at Yavin, although he still retained command of Renegade Flight. Shortly before the Battle of Hoth, Renegade Flight was destroyed and Narra was killed while escorting a convoy carrying supplies for Echo Base. The convoy was near Derra IV when it was ambushed by an Imperial Star Destroyer and several squadrons of TIE fighters led by Soontir Fel. Every Alliance vessel present at the battle was destroyed. After Narra's death, General Rieekan promoted Luke Skywalker to the rank of Commander.

I tried to get an action figure head that best resembled him. Here are the parts:

Head:  GI Joe Kickstart from Pursuit of Cobra line
Body:  Biggs Darklighter from Black Series
Helmet:  Kesin Ommis

I had to trim the peg a bit to get the head to fit on properly. Lastly I repainted his hair black as he had blonde hair.

I told you guys there wouldn't be a lot of custom figures here haha. Even though the EU has now been thrown out the window, I still think a lot of the stories are fantastic. I love a lot of the pilots, and slowly I'm trying to make customs of them. Today I knocked another one out. This is Soontir Fel, when he joined the ranks of Rogue Squadron. Like the Corran Horn figure, this is a repaint of the flightsuit, but this time black. I took Baron Fel's head and swapped it on the body of John D. Branon. I also had to trim the head peg just a bit for the head to fit on properly.

Head/helmet/rifle:  Baron Fel from Comic Pack (with Ysanne Isard)
Body:  John D. Branon from Legacy Collection Rebel Pilot Series III Pack

I finally managed to get the Borsk Fey'lya figure so I can complete my Bothan Blue Squadron Y-wing. Now I have an actual Bothan pilot! I did a simple head swap and some painting to this figure. I used his head on a Biggs Darklighter pilot figure (Black Series). The Borsk Fey'lya figure is the same height as the Biggs figure, which is why I used that figure and not Luke, who is shorter.

After doing the head swap, I painted Borsk Fey'lya's hair, which was originally gray, to the color of jokaero orange from Games Workshop Paints. Don't let the name fool you - Jokaero Orange however, is more of a tan color than orange. I wanted to originally use this color on my Snowspeeder before testing it out and realizing it was the wrong color for it. I painted the hair so the figure looks like a regular Bothan, and not Borsk Fey'lya. Lastly I sealed the figure with a matt varnish coating to prevent chipping, placed him in my Blue Squadron Y-wing and presto - custom complete!

Overall I'm happy with how it turned out, I really like how the color on the hair looks. I wish the Y-wing cockpit was bigger though. When I get around to making a custom of Ace Azzameen, I would have loved to have Ace as the pilot and the custom Bothan pilot as the gunner.

Anyway enjoy guys!

Yup that's the one. I had to modify the peg a little to get Borsk's head to fit properly.

I fixed the 4th picture as there was a glare on the figure, making it look like the paint had come off.

In keeping up with the Shadows of the Empire theme, here is my newest custom figure: Luke Skywalker - Jedi Training. I am surprised this version of Luke was never made, it really is a simple figure to make. It felt a little weird not doing anything pilot related this time, but this was an easy custom and fun to do.

Here are the parts I used.

Head: Vintage Collection Luke Dagobah landing (X-wing gear)
Body: Vintage Collection Luke Endor Capture (with lightsaber)
Holster & Blaster: Vintage Collection Luke Bespin Fatigues
Vest: POTF Rebel Fleet Trooper

After a bit of part swapping, All that was left was repainting the vest to a very light tan/yellow color. I wanted to color match the vest as best I could. I went to a nearby craft store to find the right color. As soon as I saw it I instantly knew it was the right one, and am very happy with the result. The only gripe I do have is sometimes when posing Luke, the vest looks like a life preserver. I may look into getting another (smaller) vest.

Thanks guys. Besides Dash, that Luke custom is the only non-pilot I own. Kinda weird haha. For some reason I always liked this outfit on Luke, seems like it would be something he would wear. Probably the fact its from my favorite Star Wars book is what prompted me to make this.

I'm glad you like the Bothan pilot. I think it came out better then expected. In person the color I used looks more brown, the lighting makes it a bit orange-ish. A simple custom, but a nice figure to compliment his Y-wing.

I changed the reference picture so you guys have a better idea of what Luke wore in Shadows.
Title: Re: Goldleaderone's custom figures
Post by: Goldleaderone on May 03, 2015, 05:26:31 PM
I knocked out another custom figure today, this one in particular I'm very happy to have. This is my custom Olin Garn pilot figure, from the computer game X-Wing Alliance.  XWA is my favorite game, and to have a custom of one of the recurring characters is such a great feeling. I can't wait to make an Ace Azzameen pilot figure and have these 2 next to each other. Here's a bit of back story on Olin Garn.

Olin Garn was a bounty hunter and freighter pilot who frequently contracted with Twin Suns Transport Services during the Galactic Civil War. While working for the Azzameen family, Garn developed a close friendship with Aeron Azzameen and soon became accepted as one of the family. By the time of the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, Garn decided to join the Alliance to Restore the Republic, serving as a pilot in the Alliance Starfighter Corps. He remained in contact with the Azzameens, serving as their contact when Aeron's father, Tomaas, arranged to deliver a supply of bacta to the Rebellion. Soon after, Tomaas and his eldest son, Galin, were killed by the Galactic Empire, and the surviving family members declared traitors. When Tomaas's children, Aeron, Emon, and Ace, sought sanctuary with the Alliance, Garn vouched for the group and recommended Ace Azzameen for training as a starfighter pilot.

In the months leading up to the Battle of Endor, Garn was stationed aboard the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Liberty. During this time, he fought alongside Ace Azzameen in several missions, including the capture of the Imperial spy Kupalo, the rescue of several Bothan operatives whose ship had been detained by the Star Destroyer Accuser, and escorting the Star Cruisers Independence and Defiance as they rendezvoused with the Alliance Fleet near Sullust.

Again, not much required for this custom. A simple head swap, I trimmed the peg down quite a bit. Some paint came off the neck but that was ok, as I had to repaint the neck to match his skin color. I was also able to rub off his facial hair as well. Here are the parts I used:

Head: GI Joe Cobra 25th Anniversary Roadblock
Body: Black Series Biggs Darklighter
Helmet: Lt. Lepira

I used a Biggs body because in the only photo we have of Olin Garn, the flares (I think that's what they are) can be seen on the right leg. The Biggs body has them on the right leg. There are no pictures of Garn with a helmet, and for some reason I see him with a basic helmet with just the red Rebel logos. The first picture I took, I tried to mimic the reference picture.

I know I posted this before, but now I can say this custom is officially complete. This is a custom figure of myself, thanks to thatsmyface.com. I finally got the rebel pilot figure I wanted to use for the custom.

Earlier, I used the Dagobah Landing X-wing Luke figure, as I just wanted to see how it would look. Now with finally getting a regular X-wing Luke figure (with the black gloves and boots), and after trimming the peg down a bit, I was able to 'officially' complete this. The reason I used the X-wing Luke figure is because Luke is short, as am I. Now that the figure is done, there are a few accessories included. (I will not be placing the helmet on my figure, as the head is made of some sort of resin material, and will most likely damage the head).

If you don't mind me asking, how much does it cost to get that done?

Looks just like you, thats worth another share.

By the way, have you ever thought of joining the Rebel Legion as a pilot? I could see you doing a one to one outfit.

Thanks Tamer. I believe it was around $60 or so? That was just for the head, I bought the X-wing Luke figure separately off ebay. It is a bit pricey but they do great work. The bigger the head the more expensive it becomes. I bought this with some loose change I collected over the course of a few months. The only gripe I have is its made of this hard resin material, so its not the usual plastic on the action figures. You have to be really careful, these will break easy. I just hope I don't accidentally drop my figure.

I've never thought about joining the Rebel Legion. I'll definitely look into it.

EDIT:  Scratch that, it actually started out at $49.99.  Not sure if prices have changed since.

Here is a quick custom I just completed. This is Tycho Celchu in his dress uniform. While I do love the Rogues and the pilots of the Rebellion, I may start making the Rogues in non-pilot outfits soon.

Here are the parts I used.

Head: Tycho Celchu 30th Anniversary A-wing pilot
Body: Wedge Antilles (X-Wing Rogue Squadron) The Legacy Collection

Not much really required to make this figure. Just a simple head swap. Tycho is one of my favorite "old" EU pilots so to have another variation of him is pretty cool.

Here is another Tycho Celchu custom figure. This time he is in his orange flight suit, representing his appearance in the Rogue Squadron comics and novels. I have always wanted to make this version of Tycho ever since he was released, and I'm happy to finally complete it.

Recipe:

Head: Tycho Celchu 30th Anniversary A-wing pilot
Body: Wedge Antilles The Vintage Collection ROTJ
Helmet: Luke Skywalker The Saga Collection

Not a whole lot to this custom. A simple head swap, trimmed the peg down just a tad, and some painting. It was really hard adding the black paint applications to the helmet, as well as the small flames above the Rebel logos. I messed up on the first attempt, and this is my result on the second try. I had to use a toothpick to add in the details. I think I did an alright job but I would like to try again at some point.

I'm pleased to have finally completed my Ace Azzameen custom figure. Ace Azzameen is the player-character in the flight simulator PC game X-Wing Alliance. XWA is my favorite Star Wars game, so to have a custom figure of the main character is pretty awesome.

The parts I used:

Head: Luke Skywalker Moisture Farmer 30th Anniversary Collection
Body: Luke Skywalker The Legacy Collection (X-wing gear)
Helmet: Luke Skywalker Dagobah Landing The Vintage Collection (X-wing gear)

A simple head swap and some painting required for this figure. The head was a perfect fit for the figure, and to my surprise needed no modifications to the peg. For my custom figures, I like to use heads that are from other lines - for example, when making my Olin Garn custom, I originally used a Mace Windu head as I needed a bald African-American. The more I looked at it, the more I thought "That's just Mace Windu in X-wing gear" so I looked more and that's when I found the GI Joe Roadblock figure.

Even though the head I used for Ace contradicts my above reasoning, the Moisture Farmer 30th Anniversary Luke figure looks nothing like Luke at all. If I find a more suitable head to my liking I will swap them out, but for now this head will do. I was also looking for a "boyish look" and this figure seemed to work. The only time you see Ace anyway is with the in-flight camera. His head is mostly covered by his helmet anyway. I thought about painting the hair but the helmet is a pretty tight fit and I didn't want to worry about the paint constantly rubbing off.

Lastly, speaking of the helmet, Ace has a helmet similar to Luke's. During the game in-flight, you can see its basically identical to Luke's (picture 1).  However, after joining the Rebellion you can see Ace's helmet in his quarters. The helmet has more of a thicker red stripe in the middle (picture 2). I decided to paint the helmet with the thicker red stripe, that way while I'm using a helmet similar to Luke's, you can distinguish the difference between the two. I also painted the visor black (picture 1). Also, the figure's flight harness is silver, while on all other pilot figures (except Grizz Frix), they are gray. I did this so Ace "stands out" a bit more.

I fixed my Shadows of the Empire Luke figure today. I found a vest that better fits Luke. I took a vest from the Han Solo comm-tech figure from the Power of the Force line. Painted it the same light tan/yellow color and it definitely works. The previous vest I used covered Luke's pistol, this one doesn't. The vest stops right at the waist.

Continuing on with some of the 'old' EU pilots from video games, here is my custom figure of "Rookie One" from the PC games Rebel Assault and Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire. I have never played those games but have always been intrigued by the character. This custom of Rookie One is based on the second installment of the game from the cutscenes, as in the first game you could customize your character as male or female. In Rebel Assault II they established Rookie One as male, and had real life cutscenes.

Just some part swapping and some minor tweaking to this figure. I trimmed the peg down just a bit, swapped the head, and did some minor modifications to the helmet. His helmet is the same as Lt. Lepira's - a basic Rebel helmet with red Rebel logos and 2 designs on the sides. Lepira seems to be around 20 bucks so I found the next best thing - I found a Tiree helmet in a small fodder lot for cheap. Its got the red Rebel logos, 2 designs on the side but another design in the middle. I easily took the design in the middle off. The only gripe I have is the Rebel logos have small black marks inside, but you really can't tell that much. A simple, but effective custom. I'm really happy with my head selection.

The leg flares can be seen on his right leg in the cutscenes, so I made sure to use a pilot where the flares were on the right leg. The blaster he uses looks to be a DL-44 type, with a silver tip. I had a spare from The Vintage Collection Luke X-wing figure, which I used (I try to be accurate as much as possible).

Head:  GI Joe: Retaliation Agent Mouse
Body:  Wedge Antilles from The Legacy Collection X-wing (Target Exclusive)
Helmet:  Tiree from Yavin Pilot Pack
Blaster:  Luke Skywalker in X-wing gear Vintage Collection

Hey thanks. Yeah I'm really pleased with the Mouse head. I was originally going to use it for my Ace Azzameen custom, but I realized it was better suited for Rookie One. I especially like how he looks with the helmet on, in the chin area. It matches him from the game's cutscenes very well.

Do it up! It's a very simple and quick (but very effective) custom to make. I wanted to use the Bespin head but realized the Dagobah Landing head looked more like how Luke looks on the novel's cover. I know the Dagobah Landing figure is getting a bit expensive ($30+ last time I checked ebay). If you use that head, it will be loose so just get a little bit of tacky material and drop it in the head. Doing so will 'tighten up' the head. It won't be loose and you'll still have a fully functional ball-jointed head.

Just wanted to post a quick update. I did a few quick customs which I finally acquired the parts for.

The first is Luke Skywalker in X-wing Gear from Return of the Jedi. Granted he was only shown in his X-wing for about 15 seconds, we still got figures like Sandstorm Luke or even Lightsaber Construction Luke, both of which were deleted scenes. I wanted to make this version of Luke because now I have all variations of Luke in his flight suit. I had a spare Endor Capture Luke head from when I did my Shadows of the Empire custom Luke.

Head & Lightsaber: Endor Capture Luke from The Vintage Collection
Body:  Luke Skywalker from The Saga Collection (X-wing Gear)
Helmet:  Dagobah Landing Luke (X-wing gear)

"I have a promise to keep... to an old friend."

The second figure is Wedge Antilles from the Expanded Universe. I always noticed Wedge's head from the Wedge/Borsk comic pack best resembles Wedge then the single carded figures. I wanted to make this version of Wedge to put with the other Rogue Squadron EU pilots.

Head:  Wedge Antilles from Wedge/Borsk comic 2-pack
Body & Helmet:  Wedge Antilles from The Vintage Collection

Wedge and the Rogues (pilots holding helmets are customs)

Rogue Leaders

Not much done, just trimmed the pegs and some part swapping.

B.  It's hard to mess up on the lackluster paint apps we've been getting.

Whether or not Hasbro gets them distributed or not is the question.  Those will no doubt be hard to find too.

BTW,  If you really want to impress people, you're going to have to repair the Joan Crawford eyebrows on TFA Leia.   ;)

Thanks man. I was just nervous as I never dry brushed before (and not realizing how insanely easy it is). While there are some gray streaks in Han's hair, its definitely more brown and its a shame we have to fix things like that to get them more movie accurate.

Not sure if I'm going to pick up Hoth Han part 2. Granted its a SA figure and I barely collect 5POA. I'm not sure if I want to get a figure where they based his appearance for about 10 minutes of screen time. The only other 5POA figure I have is Asty (I was getting him regardless as he's a pilot). I have Rey, Kylo Ren and a FO Stormtrooper from the SA line, and if those weren't made in that line I wouldn't even have bought them. I may change my mind when I see him though. It happened twice with the previous Han figures.

Regarding Leia, I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole haha.

I dry brushed yet another Han Solo figure tonight, this time on the new Black Series Starkiller Base figure. Same technique as with the past 2 Han figures, I dry brushed with a dark gray, then again with a lighter gray.

Even though it is an annoyance that we have to make corrections to our figures to be accurate, when its little things like this I don't mind.

I started working on a super articulated Chewbacca figure from TFA today. It's practically done, I just would like to get a lighter brown and go over it in some areas. The body of the figure is from the Early Bird Revenge of the Sith set. What I did was I dry brushed with a dark brown, painting over the Kashyyyk paint job. I used the boil and pop method to remove the head. I trimmed the peg down and popped the TFA Chewie head on.

Parts I used:

Head, Bowcaster and bag: TFA Chewbacca (Build-A-Weapon set)
Body: Early Bird Revenge of the Sith set

Here is a custom pilot from one of my favorite games. Kasan Moor from the original Rogue Squadron. Pretty cool to have another pilot from one of your favorite video games. I picked what I thought was the best action figure head that most resembled her. This character is under the old canon, now "Legends."

Parts used:

Head: Irina Spalko from Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Body: Dorovio Bold from The Legacy Collection
Helmet: Jon Vander from the Saga Collection

Trimmed the peg some and dry brushed her hair a bit darker. It's hard to tell what helmet she uses as that is the only photo of Kasan, so I gave her the most beat up extra helmet I had.

Kasan Moor was an Imperial TIE interceptor pilot and flew as the lieutenant of the elite 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron. Following the destruction of her homeworld, Alderaan, by the Empire's Death Star, Moor grew something of a hatred for the Empire and would defect to the Rebel Alliance during the Alliance's liberation of Gerrard V.

Moor's knowledge of Imperial installations and her exceptional piloting skills were reason for her induction into the legendary Rogue Squadron, an Alliance starfighter unit led by Commander Luke Skywalker. Flying under the callsign Rogue Seven, Moor led the Alliance through a string of several victorious hit and run operations against various Imperial bases. Following her assistance in bringing down Moff Kohl Seerdon, Moor retired from being an active member of Rogue Squadron to be an advisor to Mon Mothma, Chief of the Rebel Alliance. She would once more fly for Rogue Squadron during the Battle of Calamari years later.

Even though the EU (Legends) is no longer canon, I still like to make some customs from it. Here is my newest custom pilot, Gavin Darklighter. He is the cousin of Biggs Darklighter. I bought a custom of Gavin a few years ago off ebay, but it wasn't super articulated. Now that I found all the parts I needed for cheap, I wanted to make my own.

Recipe:

Head: Major Barrage from GI Joe
Body: Jon "Dutch" Vander from The Black Series
Helmet: Luke Skywalker VOTC

Just some minor tweaking and part swapping here really. I had to do some minor trimming to the neck post for the head to fit properly. I always thought Gavin had black hair. According to Wookiepedia, he is listed as having dark brown hair so I left it. I'm very happy with my head selection, I've had my eye on it for quite some time. The helmet fits perfectly. As you can see, I like to be accurate as possible - the helmet is the same and the flares are on the right leg.

Thanks man. Yeah I have a lot of custom pilots that I made from video games I grew up playing. The Jon Vander figures that I got for cheap came in handy too. Biggs from The Black Series is cheap also but they used this neon orange color that I didn't like. With Vander they went back to the traditional orange, thankfully.

I finally have my own personal astromech to go with my own pilot figure. I named him R2-S5, a mix of personal preference and based off my favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox.

I also checked Wookiepedia, and that droid's designation isn't taken so I'm in the clear (for now).

Thanks! Of all the custom pilots I've made, Gavin is the one I'm most happy with. The astro however, there was no painting done. I just grabbed a bunch of astromech parts from the Disney build-a-droid on ebay and put together my own, rather then painting lol.

"This is TIE SS-2-5. You can call me Wedge!"

I decided to whip up a quick custom of my favorite character, Wedge Antilles. This is based on his appearance from Star Wars Rebels. He defects to the Alliance along with Hobbie, with the help of Sabine.

Parts I used:
Head: Wedge Antilles Black Series Snowspeeder Pilot
Body: Biggs Darklighter Imperial Pilot Legacy I

Afterwards I painted Wedge's head cover/cap black and dropped a tiny bit of tacky material to tighten up the ball-jointed neck. I have another TIE Pilot that I got for cheap coming in from ebay soon. It's a 5POA figure (no head under helmet). I'm just going to drill out the helmet and use that. The one included with Biggs has an unusual opening.

Here is another custom from a video game I grew up playing. This is my version of Moff Seerdon, the main villain from the video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

Kohl Seerdon was a Human male Grand Moff who served in the Galactic Empire and was aware of the tactics of Rogue Squadron during the Galactic Civil War. During the Galactic Civil War, Seerdon held control over the gas giant Taloraan and its tibanna gas mines. He also had a Weapons Research Facility on the planet Fest. During the war, Seerdon started consolidating forces to take over Rebel Alliance bacta supplies on Thyferra. The Rebel Alliance watched his moves closely. He was one of the most dangerous enemies of the Rebel Alliance flight group Rogue Squadron months after the Battle of Yavin.

While there are no official images of Moff Seerdon, I put together my own version of what I thought he would look like. You could always hear the smugness and overconfidence in his voice, and to me the figure head I chose seems to best match that. I am not sure what line this particular head comes from, but the body I used is a Luke Skywalker/Lt. Jundland figure from The 30th Anniversary Empire #39 comic pack. I trimmed down the neck peg some, and dremled the neck hole a bit bigger so it would fit properly.  Lastly, I repainted the rank badge so it was the correct markings for a Moff - top row of 6 blue squares, bottom row of 3 red squares and 3 yellow squares.

This was my first attempt at making a ball-jointed neck figure from the boil and pop method. I did a practice run on a previous figure. This one came out ok but I would like to try again at some point. I wanted to make my own version of a super articulated Dash Rendar from the Battle of Hoth during Shadows of the Empire. I dremeled out the head which came out ok, then did some dremeling to the neck post as well.

Head: POTF Dash Rendar
Body: The Black Series Wedge Antilles
Helmet: The Black Series Dak Ralter

Thanks guys.

I decided to give him one more try, and I'm glad I did. They always say third time's the charm. I'm much happier with this attempt, I was able to get a much cleaner cut around the neck. I based this figure off a trading card seen here.

I also had a spare Dash figure, so I made a really quick custom from this image. I believe this image was in the Shadows of the Empire players guide. I just dremeled a bit on the chest to fit the chestbox in, and put some tacky material inside where I dremeled so the chestbox would stay in place. Nothing fancy, but I thought it would be a cool figure variation of Dash.

Here is another custom pilot from a video game I grew up playing. This is General Crix Madine, as Gold Leader from the original Rogue Squadron video game. This was the game's fifth mission. In Liberation of Gerrard V, Y-wings from Gold Squadron were tasked with disabling escaping yachts while Rogue Squadron provided cover. No images exist of Madine in a pilots uniform from the game, so I gave him a spare Gold Leader helmet. With this game being a few months after the Battle of Yavin, I thought it made sense for Madine to use a helmet like Gold Leader's, to honor him.

Same method with the Dash figure - boil and pop, then dremeled the neck out, and shaved down the neck post a bit. I was sure to use a taller pilot for the body, as it is the same height as the Madine figure.

Head: General Crix Madine (Original Trilogy Collection)
Body: John D. Branon (The Legacy Collection - Rebel Pilot Legacy III)
Helmet: Jon "Dutch" Vander (The Black Series)

I also did some very quick work to my custom figure of myself. Initially, when I placed my order, I remember there being an issue with my order for whatever reason when it was time to ship. Finally when they sent it, they sent me 2 figure heads. I kept one as a backup in case something happened. However tonight I took a spare Luke pilot body, shaved down the neck post some and made a second figure. For this one though, I was able to carefully place a helmet over the head. I kept the figure helmet-less before because these heads are resin material and will break easily. Now that I have a second figure, I have one to display without a helmet and one with a helmet on. For the helmet-less figure, I also added a holster as the blaster wasn't fitting properly in the left hand.

For the helmet version, the helmet is there to stay now. I plan to add some paint to the helmet, maybe a red stripe in the middle similar to Luke's.

Not counting the 2 customs of myself, and 2 doubles (which I have placed in their respected ships) my pilot collection is now up to 58

Here is another custom pilot, this time one from the movies and not a video game. This is Telsij, who flew a Y-wing with Gray Squadron during the Battle of Endor. In old canon, he was a Lt. and flew as Gray Two. In new canon, his rank and callsign have not been established, but I have noticed a lot of old canon callsigns/squadron names are being carried over. I did the usual boil and pop, then cut out the neck post and dremeled the neck out. I didn't have to do any modification to the neck post, I was able to get the head to fit properly.

Some back story on this figure - He was named "Arvel Crynard" found in the POTF2 Rebel Pilots Cinema Scene. I say that in quotations because he was mistakenly labeled as Crynard. He is supposed to be Lt. Telsij, the Y-wing pilot who says "There's too many of them!"  As you can see, they gave him a Y-wing helmet, a B-wing flightsuit, and an A-wing pilots name. This was confirmed by Leland Chee, who works at Lucasfilm.

Recipe:

Head and helmet: "Arvel Crynard" from POTF2 Rebel Pilots Cinema Scene
Body: Ekelarc Yong from TVC Battle over Endor (set 1 of 2)

Here's another quick custom I did tonight. Going back to the original Rogue Squadron video game, this is Zev Senesca in X-wing gear. Zev was a member of Rogue Squadron in between ANH up until his death in ESB (old canon). Zev is the only Snowspeeder pilot released not to have the head cap/covering found on other Snowspeeder pilots. Because of that, I wanted to make him a regular X-wing pilot, basing his appearance from the Rogue Squadron game.

This was just a simple head swap really. I did have to boil and pop the head off. It was a ball-jointed neck but it was pretty tight, I just had to loosen it up a little. I applied some tacky material inside the head so it would stay on properly and wouldn't be so loose. It took about a minute or so. Very simple, but with me being caught up with my pilot collection, I love to army build and make variations of the pilots when I can.

Recipe:

Head & Helmet: Zev Senesca (30th Anniversary Collection)
Body: John D. Branon (The Legacy Collection - Rebel Pilot Legacy III)

i am trying to create the scavengers squadron that attack the Kyuat Yards from the Bounty Hunter Wars.
What speckel treatment did you give to Zev's helmet?

Zev's helmet came like that. The Zev figure that came with the Snowspeeder, his helmet on that figure was a bit darker for some reason.

Here are 2 more custom pilots, this time going back to the movies. The first is Snowspeeder pilot Hobbie (and super-articulated as well). I did have a previous Snowspeeder Hobbie, but it wasn't super-articulated. With me learning to use a dremel, I wanted to make a proper Snowspeeder Hobbie, as the one released was in his X-wing gear (but had the head cap/covering that a Snowspeeder pilot has). The second figure is a Sullustan pilot from a deleted scene in Return of the Jedi.

HOBBIE

Recipe:

Head & Helmet: Hobbie Klivian (30th Anniversary Collection - X-wing Rogue Squadron #25)
Body: Dak Ralter (The Black Series)

Again, boil and pop method used on this figure. Then dremeled out the neck until it was able to fit securely on the neck post. No modification done to the neck post.

SULLUSTAN PILOT

Recipe:

Head: Ten Nunb (The Legacy Collection - Evolutions Rebel Pilot Legacy)
Body: Jake Farrell (The Legacy Collection - Rebel Pilot Legacy III)
Helmet: Ten Numb (POTF2 Rebel Pilot Cinema Scene)

This was just a simple head swap and some painting. I did a little dremeling to the inside of the figure's head, as I didn't want it sitting too high on the neck post. I used Jokaero Orange from Games Workshop Paints to paint the neck post, and dry brush some color to the front of his face. I dropped some tacky material inside the head to tighten it up when placed on the neck post. I also painted the tacky material so it would match the color of the neck post. Lastly I modified the helmet by cutting off the chin strap, so it looked more screen accurate. The original color seemed to match the one seen in the deleted scene.

Here is my first 6" Black Series custom: Luke Skywalker from Shadows of the Empire. I've seen others make this same figure but with Shadows being my favorite story I'm really happy to have my own.

Parts I used:

Head, hands, blaster, holster - Bespin Luke
Body and lightsaber - Jedi Luke
Vest - Greedo

I plan on painting the vest a lighter tan but this is good enough for now.
