Title: www.customsforthekid.blogspot.com [YEAR ONE w/END OF YEAR VIDEO]
Post by: darthdaddy on October 06, 2010, 08:30:19 AM
www.customsforthekid.blogspot.com (http://www.customsforthekid.blogspot.com)

Darth Daddy here,

Just started a new Star Wars customizing blog for my 6 year old and wanted to share the blog with a forum full of Star Wars customizing fans.

Our new blog will showcase the customs we've made so far and some customs made by other artists that we picked up along the way. We'll try and provide you with some links to these talented artists in case you want to get some of their customs for your own and I will give you some tips on customizing for those of you who are just starting out. I only just started customizing so don't expect much, but I hope our presentation makes up for the lack of experience.

Here's the link: http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/ (http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/)

Below are some customs you can find on the site (newest to oldest):

Yes! You made the jump! Glad to see you here along with your customs. I love the 2 new bounty hunters! Those IM figures make for great fodder. Please everyone follow the link to the blog as it is a lot of fun and you will see a few things never seen here. I will be making my own "Goliath" that is for sure! I love that thing! Also take a look at the front page story about submiting your figures for the ISY video Wraithnine will be making. Welcome to the Yards!

Oh yea, I forgot to ask, do you have a blue light shining on the first figure or did you paint a bit of blue in spots to look like a reflection?

Oh yea, I forgot to ask, do you have a blue light shining on the first figure or did you paint a bit of blue in spots to look like a reflection?

No blue light or additional paint was used.  I just used the soft flash from my camera and some overhead lighting.   The blue tones that came out definitely enhanced the look of the figure though.

I did a slight redesign on the site today and it now has links to other Star Wars sites and image links to supplemental pages in the blog.  Hopefully it makes navigation easier.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.  I love the new hobby my son and I started.  It's a great activity to share together.  Look forward to seeing you at our future posts.

Darth Daddy. Great name!

I like the look of the customs you have posted. You can't beat a Degobah scene and that astromech looks great. Welcome to the Shipyards!

I will have to give your site a look. I love the idea of the family activity though.

Camera flash you say? Well you are good with the camera because it doesn't look like a flash was used in that pic. Well done!

Hi Art,

Thanks for the positive feedback, although I can't take credit for the Juno Eclipse.  The Juno was made by Insidious Customs and was just featured in our Customizer's Spotlight, but we are at least fortunate to have it in our personal collection.  Any figure that is featured in a post titled Customizer's Spotlight is always the creation of another customizer, but it is always a custom from our personal collection.  Thanks for the compliments on my android assassin.  That action figure was made by me.  I have only been customizing since July so it feels good when I get someone has something nice to say.

I'm down for collaborations, but where do you live?  It could be hard to meet up if the distance is great.  I never did any action figures for Ysanne Isard, but I'm anxiously awaiting the Hasbro version when Entertainment Earth mails her out.
Title: Re: www.customsforthekid.blogspot.com
Post by: Art deWhill on October 08, 2010, 05:43:46 AM
hi Darth Daddy,

thank you for your kind and fast reply!
I 'll have to ask Insidious Customs then if I could use his Juno in some artwork, but have no contact info about him... maybe you could introduce me? that would be a great help.
EDIT: just looked at your blog carefully and boy, there is every information I need  :-[  sorry for asking first before thinking.

And for Ysanne I'll have to ask you later this year...  ;D
but first I should explain what I am exactly looking for and define "collaboration" ;)
You may have noticed that I am doing "painterly" composite arts using Hasbro action figures, model kits and photos of cosplayers.
I am mainly following my own ideas, asking customizers like you for their permission to use their build and help me by providing photo references, but I may be interesseted or inspired by customs introduced to me by its builder. So its some kind of circle with pushing and inspirating each other.

In both cases I use photographs of the "actors" or customs, deliverd by mail, or I am doing photo shootings with my own figures. So it doesnt matter in what country we live, its a matter of good photographs, exciting point-of-views, poses, light and so on. So its a collaboration of the cosplayer or customizer who supports me by sending in his photos, giving permission to use them in my own way and style and publish them in my networks.
the newest idea is - because I am mainly a traditional painter - to use action figures etc. in my personal oil paintings, and Juno and Ysanne are two personalities I would like to portrait using this technique. Its a very own way of mine and a lot of fun ;)

Thanks so much for the positive feedback everybody.  I wasn't sure how the cadets would turn out, but I ended up very happy with the results.  It was my first experiment with the Dremel and I feel like the new tool is going to open so many new doors.  I also just tried the boil and pop technique to make new customs.  The Duros Jedi was my first experiment with that.  These last two weeks I have been trying to work outside my comfort zone and I feel like a little bit of adventurous spirit has really paid off.  I'm starting to make the toys i always wanted to make for my little guy.  I have lots of customs to post still.  I have been cranking them out like crazy lately.  Hopefully I can photograph some this weekend.

Thanks again.

The G.I. Joe vehicles are great for Star Wars  customs.  I'm sure you could put a slammin' custom together.  I picked this spaceship for the escape pod.  Elias loves escape pods.

Forgot to add this one.  He's on the site too.

Yes, I saw him and like him very much. Not in love with that arm articulation and that and the price is why I never bought any of these. I am kind of kicking myself now, might get lucky and find them at discount stores. He does make a cool Jedi.

On the ship, I didn't even know it came with the escape pod until I saw your pics. I too love escape pods!

I agree the arm articulation isn't the best, but I love the way the legs hold their poses.  They achieve some  angles that look great, and could not be accomplished with the Hasbro line.   I wish I showed those angles in my photos.  Btw love how Jaxxon turned out.  Really rocked that one!!

The female Jedi is very, very easy.  Use the body of a Bultar Swan from the Evolutions 3-pack that came with Qui-Gon and Luke.  The head is from a Dragonball Evolution Movie 4 Inch Action Figure Bulma.  Enjoy!!

Secret Santa: Take 1

So Dad and I recently entered ourselves in the Secret Santa over at Yakface.com. It looked like loads of fun and if any of you customizers haven't been involved, I would definitely recommend doing so in in the future. Dad painted a C-3PO protocol droid with Christmas colors and finished this action figure last week. On Tuesday, we found out who we had to send the figure to and Dad realized that this customizer had an affection for a certain type of figure. So yesterday, in the spirit of Christmas, Dad made a brand new figure that he thinks will fit this customizer's tastes.

I guess that means I get to keep Dad's Christmas droid. An early Christmas for me!

Thanks Jules!

Taken from the blog:

Dad made this custom action figure from the head of a Clone Wars Plo Koon, an Episode 3 Ask Aak, and the feet of an Elis Helrot. Slave trading was big in Star Wars and we realized we didn't have any slave traders in my collection. This Kel Dor Slave Trader was strong in the Force and used his telepathic mind control powers to keep his slaves subservient. He carried his neuronic whip more for show and intimidation, but that doesn't mean he wasn't good with it. His whip was practically an extension of himself.

KEL DOR SLAVE TRADER

Dad made this custom Jedi last week. This Jedi is a amphibious humanoid that was taken by the Jedi from a remote planet that had never had been exposed to outsiders. Shortly after he was taken to be trained at the Jedi Temple, his planet was destroyed and he is now known to be the last of his kind.

His head was constructed from Mace Windu and the head decoration was made with a Stass Allie head. The body was an Obi Wan Kenobi, but most of the character's uniqueness comes from Dad's cool paint application.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!!

Mercury Art Studios recently sent us a link showing us a "new" way to display the figures we were posting on the "Customs I wish I Owned" page of our site and the "new and improved" presentation definitely tops the old one!!

We celebrate this "new" change in format with the featured addition of customizer Sith_Fire30 who has just added himself to the list of incredible customizers who now grace us with their presence on the "Customs I wish I Owned" page.

Check the link below to see our new look:

We encourage ALL customizers who would like to see some of their customs displayed on our page to email us any links you would want us to post at: customsforthekid@gmail.com

Darth Daddy's "Vanessa" Action Figure - VIDEO POST!!
Usually posts for Dad's action figures are composed of a few pictures and a short write up about the figure being posted. This time we wanted to try a little something different. This action figure that Dad named "Vanessa" started off as only a SNEAK PEAK posted earlier this week. We hope this follow up video illustrates how much the figure was worth the wait.

This video that we created highlights this new action figure from her "SNEAK PEAK" picture, through her early stages of production just before her torso reduction modification, all the way to ending photos showing her current look upon her completion. If you look at her waist you can see where the transition takes place from WIP to completion.

She was made from a dremeled Stass Allie head, the upper torso of Leia in Boush Disguise, the legs of a Clone Wars Aura Sing, and the arms of an unknown Jedi. The hair was made from a modified Pirates of the Caribbean Davey Jones hand.

Agreed, hopefully some more customizers will contact me about showcasing their work.  When I first started the "Customs I Wish I Owned" I had to search people out.  Now I have enough customizers to last me a few weeks down the road with all the submissions I'm getting.  It's great to see the community getting so involved with our site.  We feel very fortunate.  Look for wraithnine to be featured in the next two weeks.

Another Fan Fiction Custom from Dad

When Dad grabbed the Nicanas Tassu head from the fodder bag, he knew instantly that he wanted to paint the head to make the action figure resemble Pai Mei from Shaw Brothers movie classic Executioners from Shaolin and give the figure the "White Brow" look. Dad's a huge kung fu fanatic and I think he tries to slip in his influences whenever he can whenever he makes me a new custom. He said when he made this action figure he was also influenced by a lone Ronin samurai you'd find in an Akira Kurosawa movie or Kihachi Okamoto's The Sword of Doom. He was also greatly inspired by Jeff Bridges' character Rooster Cogburn in the Coen brothers new western True Grit. He said the whole time he made this custom he kept thinking about what true grit really means over and over like a mantra.

Every bounty hunter had a mentor. Yojimbo Barnes was Embo's. Barnes found the orphaned Kyuzo on his travels through Phatrong and raised him as a son. Barnes says Embo survived his training that he affectionately refers to as his baptism by fire. Yojimbo can still be found collecting bounties well into his old age. Regardless of the fact that he has a worthy successor. I guess that's what it means to have true grit.

The head is a Nicanus Tassu from the Target Geonosian 2-pack with Count Dooku, the body is Wilrow Hood, and the accessories are from a Clone Wars Embo.

On the first male Togruta, all I had to do was boil the head until the glue got soft enough to just pull them apart.  On the second, I did have to dremel it off.  I dremeled the second Zartan head to get rid of the wool hat and extend the forehead on that one and then glued the tails on after I had the paint done.  I lov ethe new Shaak Ti figure for the ability to create other Togruta.  The Zartan is great for the heads and for the accessories.

Thanks for all the good feedback everyone,

WIKI ASSANGE - GALACTIC JOURNALIST

The Kyuzo, Wiki Assange, was a galactic journalist who was known for his controversial articles that exposed the rampant corruption that occurred throughout the duration of The Clone Wars and even continued his journalistic pursuits after the formation of the first galactic Empire. His goal was to one day be able to expose Emperor Palpatine for what he truly was...a dark lord of the Sith.

Just added an easy to do 5 minute custom modification for an interchangeable head that can be used with a Clone Wars Young Boba Fett action figure.  The figure was inspired by an action figure masterpiece created by SPUDAFETT.

Thanks!!

Dad's new custom action figure is a former bounty hunter who quite some time ago joined the Rebel Alliance. Known only to others by the name of Rebel Bombay everyone will agree he's the one fighter you want on your team. Yes, he's a cunning and skilled fighter, but more notable than any other asset that he possesses, what stands out most about him is his ability to always have good luck on his side. He has the uncanny ability to always beat the odds, no matter how unlikely they may be. He once took out an entire Empire base by himself with only his blasters and a few well placed thermal detonators prompting him being given the title Tiger of the Desert. He was also well known for his swagger and charm.

I have to comment on that boba, Great little custom there!  I love the swappable head idea.  In fact I made a second version of my young boba in a cammo scheme for a friend of mine and instead of making his helmet removable I made an alternative helmet only head to swap it out with.  Had I given it more thought I realy wish I'd have come up with this fix that DarthDaddy came up with!  The stock fett helmet looks alot better than any repaint I've done of the classic helmet and makes it look much closer to a production piece.  Great job DD and thanks for the props to my work, it's great to see someone being inspired by it!

Customs for the Kid does a double post on the blog today!!

1st - Sillof has been added to "Customs I Wish I Owned"

http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/2011/02/sillof-added-to-customs-i-wish-i-owned.html (http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/2011/02/sillof-added-to-customs-i-wish-i-owned.html)

And I added a 2nd custom action figure this week.  I was going to post this action figure later next week, but since I drew blood twice trying to carve Robonino's eye patch into a second symmetrical eye I figured post it up and let you all enjoy the finished product.

The Jedi cloak is from an Even Piell action figure.  The cloth in front was from my fodder box.  All the rest was a Robonino Clone Wars action figure.  The head was carved so that the eye patch was made into a second eye that was symmetrical to the first.  Good luck carving. It's much harder than it sounds. I drew blood twice.   Finished it all off with a custom paint application.

Yep.  Only the head is painted.

Originally she had a completely different body and was a male.  I painted the other body about three times and no matter what I did, I just couldn't get it to a place where I felt satisfied.  I switched bodies on a whim and I finally felt that the custom was complete.

That is a great idea! Your customs are getting more involved with each update. I really like the Jedi and great job carving away that patch leaving a piece for the eye. That is very tedious work for sure. The repaint really sets him apart from the original figure. Great job!

I'm trying to push myself to improve.  Seeing all the customs posted in the forums and all that can be done makes me want to improve so Elias stays impressed by what I'm making here at home.

AURRA SING "ASSASSIN" EPISODE OUTFIT
Elias asked me to make him an Aurra Sing in the outfit that she wore in the "Assassin" episode from Season 3 of Clone Wars. The action figure is only a simple repaint that anyone could do with the Clone Wars Aurra Sing action figure found in stores now. I also trimmed down the antenna on the figure to make it look closer to what it would really look like.

THANKS :)

Just revisited two old figures and made some improvements.  One had major modifications and the other just had a simple body swap.

First I switched out the body of the Bothan Jedi I made in August to make him fully articulated and for my other figure was completely revamped her to produce a figure that was much closer to the concept Elias had created for his fan fiction character.  To make this custom action figure I used Apoxie Sculpt by Aves Studios to sculpt her into something much closer to his design.  It was my first time using this medium, and Elias was very happy with the results.  I definitely feel that it was a major improvement over the original.

We got the Jedi Turbo Speeder at the Hasbro Toy Shop.  I went to get a 2nd Zam Wesell, but she was sold out.  The speeder was a good consolation prize.

Parasite Collectibles: Interesting look -- I used the Quinlan Vos arms for a Mando custom myself and I think they look great on the mando body.  Using the "well done" Anakin Skywalker head from ROTS works really well here.  Have to take a look at your stuff; this first piece looks good!

Thanks everybody!!

I didn't think I'd have a chance to submit a custom action figure to the contest, but yesterday inspiration struck. For my submission, I'm entering two fan fiction custom action figures of Darth Vader Clones. These two action figures are works in progress, but I like them enough to put them into the contest since at the moment they remain unpainted.

BACKSTORY

Palpatine being the opportunist that he is, saw an opportunity to clone Anakin Skywalker when he was injured on Mustafar. Hoping that the power of the Chosen One was hidden somewhere in his DNA, Palpatine saw his chance to clone Skywalker as one not to be missed. Knowing that Skywalker's injury would prevent Vader from ever reaching his full potential as a Sith, Palpatine hoped that one day one of these clones would replace Lord Vader at his side as his new Sith apprentice once their training was complete. Due to several complications in the cloning process, only one clone was known to successfully complete the cloning process and be trained by Palpatine. The clone that was trained later destroyed the facility where Vader was being replicated knowing it would be his best chance for domination and survival, but not before he took a clone for himself to train as an apprentice. Ironically, the destruction of the cloning facility did not go as planned and both clones took heavy injuries in their escape. Both of their lungs were completely damaged and they, like Vader were forced to breath with the assistance of filtered air. Unlike Vader, they still had their limbs and thus had the ability to use Force lightening. When PAlpatine and Darth Vader were killed over the moon of Endor, these clones survived in exile waiting to unleash the power of the Darkside once more.

The older clone is made from a Legacy Vader and a G.I. Joe Rex "The Doctor" Lewis.

The apprentice will later be painted in shades of black for a uniform color and more detail will be added with Apoxie Sculpt. Dad held back adding the Apoxie Sculpt so he could stay within the no painting rules of the contest.

The apprentice is made from a Prince of Persia action figure, a Vintage Vader, two Chewbacca's, an Indian Jones action figure and accessory, a Magnaguard droid, and a belt from a Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow action figure.

That is one of the coooolllest ideas I've ever seen!   O0    Considering all the Vader stuff many of us own, it is simply not something that occurred to me.  Great idea and backstory for the cloned Vaders---I like how you went with a more robotic version and then the one that is more 'feral'.  Nice touch on using both the Sebastian Shaw and Hayden Christensen heads!

When I saw this image of the unhooded Jawa, I knew I wanted to add one to Elias' collection.

THE UNHOODED JAWA

To  make my unhooded Jawa custom action figure, I used the POTF Jawa so I could still keep the yellow glow of the eyes in the action figure and sculpted the face around the eyes by hand with Apoxie Sculpt from Aves.

See the blog post here:

Lol.  It isn't mine to sell.  Elias really fell in love with this one.  I think I did too.  I have been wanting to make an Unhooded Jawa ever since I started to customize.  It wasn't as hard as i thought and I encourage you to give sculpting a try.  It's easier than you think and I have no formal art training.

Now that I started to sculpt, I have a feeling a lot more of my customs will feature sculpted parts, but not all.  I still have to crank out a custom a week for the blog and working 80 hours a week at my job doesn't leave me much time to customize extremely detailed figures.

THANK YOU ;D

I kept seeing Wookie Jedi in many of the Star Wars customizing forums and really wanted to make one, but wanted to make a unique addition to the forums when I sat down to make one. Now that I'm starting to sculpt my own pieces, I felt now was the best time to tackle to Wookie Jedi. I broke out the Aves Apoxie Sculpt and sculpted a one of a kind head for my Wookie Padawan. It took several hours to make, but I'm really happy with the results.

You definitely should.  The Aves products are amazing.  I'm going back and revisiting a lot of my customs and enhancing or improving them now that I have an extra tool in my skill set and it isn't that hard.  Time consuming but loads of fun.  It's best to work on several figures at once.  I bounced back and forth between six different figures.  Sculpted on Saturday and painted on Sunday.

Thanks everybody for the words of encouragement.  It makes me want to try and finish my Vader Clone Apprentice today if I can.

Where do you get the Aves stuff?  And any chance you'd consider doing a mini-tutorial/intro to working with the Aves material?

I put a link in the blog post so people could order it direct at the Aves website.  Here's the link to the post:
http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/2011/03/dad-creates-wookie-padawan.html (http://customsforthekid.blogspot.com/2011/03/dad-creates-wookie-padawan.html)

I would consider it, but since this is only the 2nd action figure that I created in this way, I'm not sure I have the best credentials to be doing it.  Before these action figures, I had no sculpting experience.  Never sculpted a thing.

I could put out a good effort though.

I'll create a new topic for it when I sit down to create my next sculpture.  If I didn't just finish my Vader Clone Apprentice, that would have been a good place to start since it was only adding details to clothing, but I'm sure people are more interested in creating heads so it's probably for the better anyway.

Glad you liked him.  He's one of my all time favorite customs.  For the wookiee I just rolled the Apoxie Sculpt into baby snakes and then attached it.  I sculpted a lot of it with my Exacto knife once they were attached.  The Exacto knife is my favorite sculpting tool.  Just have an image of what you want it to look like and get the clay where you need it.

Title: Re: www.customsforthekid.blogspot.com
Post by: darthdaddy on March 17, 2011, 04:13:21 PM
It's a piece of cake.  Time consuming depending on how much work a customizer has , but the videos created with the Animoto.com engine come out great.  Hopefully I can eventually get through everybody who posts here at the Yards.

Anyone who has an interest in being featured in one of our videos, please reach out!

I'm always looking for someone new to feature and I don't have anyone slotted for next week yet.  Just try and have enough customs to make the slide show last at least 2 minutes and try and have good quality pictures of your customs, because the quality of the image is usually reduced when the video is made and I want to make everybody happy with what is produced :)

Well now that is a very gracious offer. Care if I advertise that on the front page?

I would also love to see one of your animoto vids on the Kit Bash Contest and the current Mini-Rig Contest we have going on if you ever do have a down week and feel like working on a video!

You can definitely post my offer on the front page.

I can definitely put a video together for the contest.  It may take a bit to put together.  I'm working hard on my submission for the mini-rig contest and it has been very time intensive.  I probably already put 20 hours of work into it and I don't feel even close to done.  I'm hoping to reach the deadline, but I'm starting to worry.  As soon as I wrap it up my schedule will give me the time to take the project on.

When Dad created these two action figures, he said he had the TV show Miami Vice in mind. He wanted to create a team of undercover detectives to shake up the Star Wars crime underground.

Crockett is the Falleen.  It's a very loose interpretation.  I had to keep it Star Wars.  Think  Falleen pheromones and Don Johnson's supposed sex appeal at the time.  Supposedly those pheromones can work some magic.

FialaFernbrugg ADDED TO "CUSTOMS I WISH I OWNED"

Christoph, aka FialaFernbrugg, is a 23 year old customizer from Austria. Perhaps the only customizer from this small country. He has been customizing Star Wars figures and vehicles for about two years now. His focus is on Clones and Revell vehicle customs. Recently, he has started with technical drawings of Star Wars weapons and lightsabers. He is also known for his custom action figure stands and bases.

You can find his stuff on www.imperialshipyards.net and also on YouTube where he shows most of his customs with a short tutorial.

The Force Is Strong With Him!

Elias and I came across this post on Action Figure Empire and we asked if we could post it on our blog too!  When Elias saw a fellow Star Wars collector who shared his name and who was in need of my assistance, we jumped at the chance to offer a hand.   We'll be sending some custom action figures  his way and we have a feeling you all will too.  We've been informed that he'd like a version of himself as a Padawan.  We checked and we couldn't find an appropriate body for the job.  I'll look around on ebay,  and see if I can find one.  If anyone has a body for the job and wants to volunteer for the project, his picture is below.  If not I'll try and locate one.  If there is one thing I know about the customizing community it's the desire of the community to get involved in projects such as this. Therefore, I figured I'd get the word out to as many of you as possible.

If anyone wants to front page this it would be cool.

The original post appears below:

Today I want to turn this blog's attention to the story of a young Star Wars action figure collector named Eli. Eli is madly passionate about all things Star Wars and Star Wars toys. He's an outgoing little guy with a great big smile and he's also into arts and crafts, and World War 2. Eli is has been diagnosed with a rare life-threatening disease called Severe Aplastic Anemia, a disease of the bone marrow. Severe Aplastic Anemia also affects the immune system making it difficult for those who have it to be out in public. You can imagine how this makes it hard to get out and do things, visit with people, or even shop for Star Wars toys. We here at Action Figure Empire call for your support for young Eli, a fan, and a collector who needs all the support he can get right now. We ask that you donate one or more, Star Wars toys of any kind to Eli. You can Include a message of your own to Eli if you wish as well. Eli will be delighted to receive your generous donations. Please send them to:

Action Figure Empire
114 Oak Street Apt. D
Maybrook, NY 12543

From there we at AFE will then forward your generous donations to Eli. AFE is proud to create and participate in the official Toys for Eli Toy Drive. Please take a moment to contribute to Eli's Star Wars action figure collection. Every donation you give helps!

We give the Official Action Figure Empire Salute to Eli and his family.

Thank you for reading this and thank you so much for your donations!

May The Force Be With You All!

Post by: darthdaddy on March 27, 2011, 11:24:35 AM
Just finished my Mini-Rig Contest entry, but I'm not quite ready to submit my five photos yet.

It was a real labor of love.  I easily put in more than 40 hours of work into this one.  I made this speeder bike from an Operation Rex toy that I saw in Target on the day that the contest was announced.   After that it was all fodder.  An everything but the kitchen sink affair.  Constructing it was an effort that was much enjoyed.  I sculpted most of the controls, spare the Vader control pad.  I also sculpted the around grill and the front window.  Oh... and the cushioned seating, yeah, that's sculpted too.

After that fodder galore.  An A-team special if you will.  A beater, clunker, jalopy, hooptie.  Look at your fodder and see more than what the object was meant to represent and envision what it could become with a little imagination.  The grill and window were made from a G.I. Joe radar dish I found in my fodder.  The front axles were made from two yellow missiles and a  Momaw Nadon staff that sculpted Apoxie Sculpt hydraulic shocks fastened to what once were guns that I can't identify, but I'm seeing on Luke Sprywalker's incredibely cool entry.  The nose of the speeder bike was made from a Hulk Battle Axe that  is from the  Hulk action figure everyone was turning into a Gamorean gladiator recently,  as well as , a gold plastic mask that was in a fodder bag that we got on Ebay.  The antennas at the rear are made from a Mas Ameda staff and the bottom of an Indiana Jones torch.  I even have the long white tube from a krazy glue container  glued to the bottom and painted purple to give it the shape I wanted.  Two hilts from the Prince of Persia toy line are attached to the front of the pod with removable swords.  The Robonino backpack is removable and all his accessories are included and the vibroaxe is fastened with a clear rubber band.  The tail fin is also unidentified fodder and is sculpted in place.  The leg straps that hang down came from the guns that now hold the axel and nose in place.  A pen was  cut and painted  to attach the missile to the bike and both the missile and pen cap are removable. A Mandolorian shield is at the rear.  The engine and fire attached at the bottom are both adjustable as well as removable.  After that it was all custom painted and dressed up .

The two custom action figures that may live out there days in Star Wars, but they were definitely created by a desire to have some Dreadnoks for myself when Elias asks me to play with him.  ELias has no interest in Joes, but the Dreadnoks were my favorite action figures growing up.  I think a lot of my customs are influenced by my love for those action figures.  I remember when I got my first one , a Buzzer, as the toy was getting paid for at the counter my knees started to shake because I was so excited.  The toy created involuntary responses in me!!  Now that's toy making.

So the driver was created a Koffi Arana action figure, a Star Wars drummer that was in Jabba's Palace whose name I can't remember for the life of me at the moment and fodder, fodder, fooder with an Apoxie Sculpt beard.  The Gunner was made from a Pirates of the Caribbean Marty action figure with Apoxie Scupt hair and a Vintage Yoda robe.  Unfortunately, I dropped the gun I had for him behind the couch.

Anyway, now I'm just waiting for the battery on my camera to finish charging. Oh, and finding an appropriate back ground is also proving difficult.   The speeder bike isn't easy to photograph at all.  I'm submitting WIP shots of the photo shoot process instead of the construction process because as any customizer knows, that showing your work properly is also sometimes equally as challenging as getting the custom finished.  So these are the photos of my WIP submission.  These are the photos I have taken so far that I am thinking of using toward my final entry photos.

These are my WIP photos that I took before the camera died.  There were about 13 pictures and I didn't want to clog up the contest thread.

If there are any photos that you like and you think I should use in the final entry, I'll # the photos and you can say use #'s...

Double D! You have done a supreme job on this build! Call it what you want it looks like a droids cartoon pirate duo to me and I love it. As for the guns on the side it looks like yours are from the Joe line and are very nicely disguised. Great idea ataching the steering veins through them. With out going on and on about each piece the playability and accessories packed into every inch of this thing make it great/perfect for me. The paint job is great and I also love the figures. Nice touches all around. On your photos, I like pics like #1 with the clear rod in the bottom showing more of the vehicle. I would also avoid close ups of the figures like 3, 4 and 11. I like to open with a dramatic front or side shot of the vehicle in flight, then do left, right, and a close up or something like that. I also take any contest pics in the afternoon, outside on my deck  just out of direct sunlight. I also try to use a simple single color backdrop to make my custom stand out and not have the eye distracted by a complex backdrop. Your first shot would be so perfect with a lt. blue backdrop. The white background is reflecting too much light and is creating a slight blur.

The Road Warrior influence will always be there.  Those movies are life changers.  Especially with our civilization always teetering on the edge of the Apocalypse  ;)  I didn't grow up wanting to be Luke Skywalker or Han Solo.  I wanted to be Mad Max out in the desert with Sarah Connor on my arm lvva

I love it when my 7 year old makes a custom action figure that I wish that I thought of.  Elias made a NPKB (No Paint Kit Bash) female Weequay this weekend and bumped my custom action figure out of our "custom for the week" spot.

A good fun custom doesn't always take tons of paint or a pot of boiling water. It may take a minute of Dremel action on a Blackbeard Pirates of the Caribbean head, but if you take that head and pop it onto the body of the Rancor keeper and throw on a painted plastic Jedi robe, you can get one fun custom.

I had to post. I love  my routine of posting a figure a week.

BACKSTORY
Jedi Master Boesaan fought valiantly during the Clone Wars but later joined Sora Bulq and Quinlan Vos among Count Dooku's dark acolytes. He died quite soon after his conversion. His death is a mystery and his body was never found.

Thanks for the positive feedback.  I'm learning so much from you all.

We just added our latest video to the "Customs I Wish I Owned" page.  It showcases the custom action figures created by JACKOFTRADZE.

The first three custom action figures we ever bought were from this great artist. It was his action figures and blog that inspired the  creation of the "Customs for the Kid" blog and Elias the thought to ask me to make custom action figures for him.

Check out the blog post here:

Deliah Blue: The Apoxie Sculpt Modification

I'm not sure how many of you were happy with Hasbro's Deliah Blue action figure that was recently released exclusively by Entertainment Earth around this holiday season, but here at home we didn't feel the head sculpt accurately portrayed the Star Wars Legacy heroine. Dad offered to give my Deliah Blue action figure's hair the proper volume we are used to seeing in the Expanded Universe comics. Dad said he isn't completely thrilled with his results, but he does admit overall he does like the action figure better than Hasbro's. He just said he isn't going to customize action figures in the middle of cooking dinner for us anymore.

Thanks everybody vadsab  I think the hair would have looked differently if dinner didn't get in the way of prime sculpting time with the medium.  I lost the best minutes for the good of the toy.  I can live with the results, but I wasn't able to use the technique that I wanted because it dried too much before I was able to get back to work.

JABBA'S DANCERS

Before Oola, Jabba had quite a few dancers pass through his doors. These two dancers were by far his favorites. Togruta "Luv Li" and Clawdite "Mira Ya" were well known throughout the galaxy before finding their way to Jabba's Palace.

Luv Li was kidnapped as a young Togruta for her unique markings and sold on the black market in hopes that she would sell for a high price in the seedier edges of the galaxy. She quickly found her way to the home of the powerful aristocrat Prince Xizor. She was known to be one of his most prized possessions. Her beauty was well known throughout the entire galaxy and she danced at all his most prestigious events. She was acquired by Jabba when Xizor was believed to be killed aboard the Faleen's Fist when Vader ordered the ship destroyed.

Mira Ya was no slave. In fact she was probably the most famous dancer of her day and was paid a considerable fortune for her performances at Jabba's Palace. While not appealing to the eye in her original form, she was well known for her mesmerizing dances and her ability to take any form while she danced. Mira Ya quickly became a household name and she had a long career performing in front of sold out crowds. She used her shape shifting ability to seduce and she was unmatched in that task. Toward the end of her career, she did not have the draw she once did in her younger years, but still could still draw a sizable ticket price in the right circles.

Unfortunately both dancers were killed in crossfire as a result of a petty argument between two local thugs who were quickly fed to Jabba's rancor for their insolence.

KAINK

Kaink was the Ewok priestess. She served as the guardian of the Soul Trees, and the village legend-keeper. She lived several miles away from the village where the Warrick family lived, leading a life of solitude and oneness with nature. Kaink carried a magical staff with a crystal on top. Kaink used her staff to emit a beam of mystical force when necessary, or at other times, to hypnotize animals. She accompanied the Ewok warriors on their mission to save Mace and Cindel Towani's parents.

It's unknown whether Kaink assisted Wicket and the other Ewoks in helping the Rebellion to defeat the Galactic Empire in the Battle of Endor.

Thank you everyone.  I'm so glad everybody liked her.  She took a lot of work.  I cut and sewed her outfit by hand and built everything else from scratch with real crystals. I used to work in the education department of a Native American museum and I tried to employ earth skills I use to teach to attach the crystals to the sticks.  I put my anthropology background to use and Elias learned a thing or two about what nature can provide.  It was fun to take the hobby out into the woods for a change and get some hiking in too.  I tried to accessorize her in a way that didn't disturb the Hasbro figure at all, but at least enhanced it.

This was a really fun project that Elias and I worked on together. We had a bunch of Rodian heads in our fodder box and Elias had the idea to make a Rodian band and added a human female dancer to round out the mix. He did the kitbashing and I just used some Apoxie Sculpt, a few fodder pieces and paint to differentiate them and make them stand out as individuals.

BACKSTORY
The Rodian Band were well known street musicians that could be found in Mos Eisley on Tatooine. A colorful bunch that could be found in the cantina after a long day spending their hard earned credits.

Looks great.  Is the dancer's body that of the infamous "cankle" Leia?  If so, did you somehow narrow those ankles?  Or is it the fact you painted them to look more like shoes simply giving the illusion of a much better proportioned figure?

Yep, it's the Leia from the Xizor comic pack, but with the Slave Leia feet, a VOTC Zam Wesell head and the hair extensions of a CW Padme Amidala.  By making it look like boots, the ankles didn't look as fat.

Guys this is some of your best team work to date! Talk about customs I wish I owned! I love each and every one, great parts and finishing touches. The grand pooba hat is excellent! I love what you are doing with wookie torsos this season. The trip to the salon for these ladies really was worth it, they have some great hair styles. Well done gentlemen.

Thanks guys.  I love doing these team projects quite a lot.  Although Elias has his sights set on striking on his own and doing the independent customizer thing.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate.

Dad and I were just playing and we came up with a fun way to diversify our Zombie Geonosians. The limbs all pop apart very easily and the sockets were all the same size so we made a few Geonosian abominations to spice up our play.

Yeah it was a lot of fun :)

This week was really overwhelming and I didn't get any work done on the blog at all.  So to keep things rolling along I just posted two extremely easy customs that would be great for a beginner customizer to tackle that require minimal paint application and only slight modifications.

and

Also great news for our fans, Wookielover1138 and Kessel Run Imports have agreed to give Kessel Run Review a permanent home over at Customs for the Kid when Season 2 begins.  It's great to team up with them to help promote all the incredible artistry that the Star Wars customizing community keeps pumping out.  To read a short piece about them and their show check out the feature we put together over the weekend at:

These Ewok elders are three of the oldest Ewoks in the village. Because most Ewoks do not live to be so old, we thought it would be fun to tell you a short tale about each one so that in their passing their memory will live on.

This is my latest custom and it is the first clone related custom action figure that I have ever made, unless you count the Cad Bane in disguise.  I made this custom action figure as a thank you to Lucasclones for hooking us up with the Savage Opress comic that came out of free comic book day.  This is a post worth checking out.  It features some artwork of Lucasclones and a fun backstory for the custom I made.

I think my next clone project will be making a Bones for Elias.  He was really sad to see it go.  He started asking me what would happen if I broke my promise to Chad.  Lol.  I told him to get a grip.  Dad doesn't break promises.  He felt better when I told him I can always make another one.  I could probably do it a lot faster now too that I know what the finished product looks like.  The first time around I had to feel my way through it.

The Voodoo Trooper. I like the ring of it. He needs to be in a follow up to Death Troopers. I love Zombies that have enough wits about em to have intelligence and fight the good fight.

Definitely did :). It feels really good to see that he was so well received.  I was a little intimidated making my first clone custom after seeing how well clones have been done by the customizers here at the Yards, but all the comments left by everyone have made me feel a whole lot better about the attempt.  Thanks everybody!

ZABRAK FEMALE

Just a quick and easy custom to keep the blog current.  Nothing fancy, but a good custom for beginners that requires very little modification.

Thanks everybody.  I wasn't so sure about this one.  The body wasn't Star Wars enough for me, but I really liked the way the head looked on it.  I tried to boil and pop her arms off and wanted the legs from a Star Wars action figure, but the torso couldn't easily be modified.  I may revisit her later to give her a Star Wars body.

So glad you got him and you like the way he came out.  His colors got washed out a bit when I did the photoshoot so I'm glad you thought he looked better in person too.  I mentioned in somebody's thread that the photoshoot didn't go well.  Hopefully your video will do him justice.  Glad you liked the packaging.  I tried to build the anticipation,  Thanks so much for the comic.  It was the only one from the Clone Wars series that Elias didn't have.

hey DD I was wondering if you could cover those holes in the arms with fix it and them still be articulated...hmmmmmm.

If I cover it with paper or use a hole puncher on a piece of plastic and put the little plastic circle over the hole before I fill it, it could maybe work.  I just have to be careful that the Fixit doesn't touch the moving plastic in the hole, or it will cement the joint completely.

One of those hoods wound up in my fodder bin as well since you can't walk down a Target toy aisle without tripping over that Zartan.  Now I have some ideas on what to do with it.  That is a great way to dress up a Jedi.

THE GREAT STAR WARS CUSTOMIZING CHALLENGE 2011: CKTK ENTRIES

Last week, we announced the Great Star Wars Customizing Challenge 2011 contest that is being sponsored by Mercury Art Studios, hosted by Echo Base News, with collaboration and promotion by Imperial Shipyards, Custom Action Figure News, Wookielover1138 and Customs for the Kid, as well as a few others. So in our effort to help Echo Base get their fair share of web traffic, we are posting the entries we are submitting today in hopes you will click the link for the contest to read our custom's back story, see the photos and explanations of what we did, and go and see what else has been posted by all the other customizers. Hope to see some of your customs there too!!

Pretty cool looking.  :)

Thanks :)

I'm going to do a modification on the Hutt tomorrow after I finish this work in progress.

WIP PICTURE

This is how I am turning Jenn into "Wookielover1338 in Carbonite" for the latest Imperial Shipyards contest.

I traced and then cut plastic pieces from a plastic Chinese food container and turned them into the top and side panels of the carbonite block. I used a Han Solo in Carbonite as a template to trace the panels out so they turned out the right size. I then fastened the panels together with tape and then bonded them together with Apoxie Sculpt. I cut a silhouette of Jenn into the top panel. As a template I used the custom Wookielover1138 action figure that I created from the body of a CW Padme in Adventure Gear with the head of a Marion Ravenwood. I laid the action figure in his desired pose and traced around the action figure with a marker. So I then placed the action figure in the center of the cut out in the top panel and fastened the action figure in place with the Apoxie Sculpt. I finished today's work with priming the top panel with some grey paint.

Next I have to do all the sculpting on the side panels, sand and smooth out the top with more Apoxie Sculpt and then do all the painting to finish it up.

This is a technique that could be used with any action figure.

Since this photograph was taken, Jenn's left hand has been repositioned into a pose I preferred more.

Just a quick custom action figure to keep the blog going.  I have a lot of works in progress, but none close to the done stage.  AAAGH!!

So here's an old one I never posted.  I wasn't sure if I liked him or not, but the blog needs a new figure this week and this is going to have to be it ;D

Jedi Master Chi was a true master of Force Speed when it came to hand to hand combat and was an instructor at the Jedi Temple. Master Chi later became a Rogue Jedi who abandoned the Order at the beginning of the Clone Wars. He refused to adopt the role of a general. As he handed in his lightsaber and walked out the Temple doors, he vowed to go wherever the Force led him and never looked back.

THE WANDERING JEDI

Master Chi was created from a Vintage Darth Sidious and the head of an Indiana Jones Mola Ram action figure. The hair is my first ever attempt at using Apoxie Sculpt.

Jedi master CHI is cool looking!! Has the feeling of a ROGUE JEDI or Jedi that turned his back on the jedi ways and is out looking for adventure!!

The apoxie sculpt hari is phenomenal dude!! Little piece if advice if u ran into any problems while sculpting it...ALWAYS LET IT SIT for a few minutes to the point where it still bonds but its getting hard, apply and make the shape of the hair NO DETAILS once its cured the apply a little more apoxie and detail the hair its a slow process but it works.

Thanks Mike.  I have been trying to use that technique everytime I use the apoxie sculpt.  I try to create a skeleton first and then go back and build on the skeleton.  Unfortunately, it leaves me with a lot of half finished projects :)

Thanks Mike.  I have been trying to use that technique everytime I use the apoxie sculpt.  I try to create a skeleton first and then go back and build on the skeleton.  Unfortunately, it leaves me with a lot of half finished projects :)

I gotcha  man, skeletons or shells can be a pain, i like dong it for long haired babes or dudes but when its a short haired charaxter i usually sculpt on the go myself, i have buckled down with certain projects because i see daytons work (SITHFIRE ) and i know the potential of doing 100 times better is there...so hopefully i can start applying more sculpting to certain projects.

Keep up the great work man, you and your son are doing great don't let anything change that!!

Back in February, I was approached by James Robert Neff to create a Mandalorian custom action figure on a commission basis. I had never been asked to do a commission before and I was hesitant to take on the project due to my demanding work schedule. I explained to James that I worked anywhere from 70-80 hours a week and still had to take care of Elias when work was over so it could take a while for me to make the action figure  because I still have to make an action figure a week for the blog. I was truly flattered by the offer. Especially when our blog featured so many incredible customizers that James could have asked. For a while it seemed as if the project may not happen. I had asked James to track down the parts he wanted used and hadn't heard from him for a while. Other requests for commissions came in, but I was starting to get overwhelmed with all my responsibilities and couldn't take on any projects. Then recently, I heard again from James and the project started to move forward again. I had never made a custom Mandalorian before, so I was a little intimidated, until I realized James had provided the exact specifications that he wanted. So without further ado, here is the Mandalorian I created that was designed by James Robert Neff.

CHALMUN THE WOOKIEE

Chalmun was the Wookiee proprietor of the most popular spacer's bar in Mos Eisley, Tatooine, the eponymous Chalmun's cantina.   Chalmun was rarely seen in the main cantina; instead spending the majority of the time in his back office. Many who saw the Wookiee there mistook him for a bouncer, owing both to his formidable appearance and his tendency to physically remove anyone who caused trouble. Of course, owing to his history, he also admired people who caused trouble with style, which also meant that making friends with him was a tightrope walk.

Chalmun remained the owner of the cantina when it was visited by Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and Chewbacca shortly before the Battle of Yavin.

I modified a Chewbacca with Apoxie Sculpt to create Chalmun. The upper legs were from an Indiana Jones action figure that I can't remember off hand.

Fully Articulated Duros Jedi
I created this second Duros Jedi in under a 1/2 hour using the body of a CW Mace Windu, the pouch of a POTF Logray, and head and hands of a Ellorrs Madak. I gave the hands the ability to spin and cut and drilled the head of the Ellorrs Madak so it could fit on the painted neck of the Maced Windu body.

Thanks for all the kind feedback on the last two posts I did.  I haven't really been able to devote much time to customs or the forums this summer due to a heavy workload.  Customs for the Kid was in threat of becoming a wrap/ dead in the water and I wasn't quite sure if it was going to continue due to some looming custody issues as a result of Elias' mom moving away.  The good news is that after some legal maneuvering, I was able to maintain my 50/50 custody of Elias and also implement some safeguards so it would never be under threat again.  That said, customizing in the home has suffered quite a bit.  Unfortunately, the customs I did throw together to keep the blog going were just a few quick customs that are good for beginner customizers to tackle and weren't very fancy.  They only take a few minutes to make so feel free to add these to your collection if you wish.

Here's the latest:

Dad has been wanting to create a Ziro the Hutt action figure for me for a long time now. He had a CW Jabba the Hutt sitting in the corner of the kitchen for a few months now and this weekend he finally got started on the project. The custom is only a simple repaint and we suggest that anyone who wants to make a Ziro, to get a hold of the CW Jabba the Hutt while you still can. They Jabba toy is starting to go for a lot of money on ebay and you want to grab one before it goes out of your price range. Hasbro recently announced that they will not be making Ziro as an action figure so this is the only way you will be able to obtain the first villain of the Clone Wars television series.

Dad is in the process of sculpting Ziro's removable headdress and jewelry. When the process is completed we'll update this post.

Thanks everybody for all the positive feedback on my Ziro.   I recommend everyone check out the post on the blog so they can see a Ziro the Hutt custom that was made by customizer Peakob1.  Not that I don't like mine, but it was his custom that inspired to make my version and I like his version better than mine.  I still think he made the definitive version.   I just updated the video we had for him that we had in our "Customs I Wish I Owned" also and his action figures are definitely worth checking out.  I love his paint technique and he has made some cool figures I haven't seen anywhere else.

To check out our Peakob1 video and see his version of Ziro click below:

Not really sure how to post my latest custom action figure or how many of you are familiar with the Star Wars fan film "Makazie One" written and directed by Clutch. Set in the Star Wars universe during the time period between Episodes III and IV, the story is about an elite soldier that has been sent to track down and destroy a known threat to the Empire through intense ground battles and haunting imagery of death that surrounds the environment. The unsuspecting enemy to the new Imperial order has no idea what he is up against when the two finally meet for an action packed surprise ending.

When I did the post over at the blog, I did a video for the action figure I created and I also embedded the fan film into the post as well.  Since we can't embed video into the threads and if I post all the images of the figure I'll be posting some spoilers, I recommend you go to the blog to see the full post where you can watch the film and see what I did with the figure.

Wow everybody, you sure know how to make a guy feel good.  I'm going to be closing up this thread.  I remember reading somewhere that it's bad for the server if you go over 50 pages in a thread and since we are just wrapping up year one of the blog, I am going to open a new thread for our second year.

I like the "[YEAR ONE]" title.  I expect to see the year in review.  Not that we can't just start at page 1.  Maybe you could get all the customs together and take one giant picture.  Just a thought.

I like the "[YEAR ONE]" title.  I expect to see the year in review.  Not that we can't just start at page 1.  Maybe you could get all the customs together and take one giant picture.  Just a thought.

I'll try and take the picture soon.  The figures are packed in several different places and I have to be sure I can get all of them.  Here's a video showing the year in review to hold you over.  I pulled a bonehead move and forgot to put the Unhooded Jawa in the video so I just used him in the post as the header image so he wasn't completely overlooked.

Here's what Elias wrote about the video and our first year:

"So we wrapped up the first year of our blog last week and we figured it would be cool to put together one of Dad's videos to show you all how we spent the first year. We started the video off with the beginning of our journey. Like most customizers, we started off with simple repaints of existing action figures. We then moved onto painting up kitbashes that we had assembled. Dad wrapped the year up by taking a huge leap as he experimented with sculpting his own figures and accessories. It was a lot of fun and we went from being only beginners to starting to become seasoned customizers. It wasn't always easy, but the challenges had their rewards. Hope you enjoy the progression of our craft from its birth to the close of our first year.

Hope you all enjoy our Star Wars custom action figures."

I am the sole creator of PARASITECOLLECTIBLE,and I just wanted to say,I have had some serious troubles with some bad/crazy/haters trying to ruin my success. Due to such hostility from others,I have been changing up my Ebay I.D..These people are from my city, and have no desire to see me successful nor happy. I am happy to say,I will continue to try my best at making collectors happy with my ongoing projects.

Unfortunately there are some folks out there that will try to bring other down regardless of what you are involved in. One of the reasons we created this place was to make sure there was at least one place where folks could come online without all that worry. We always strive one hundred percent to make sure we give credit to the creator of the custom figure we feature. Matter of fact we have helped some customizers figure out that some of their work was being infringed upon by others.
