Title: August Figure Repaint Competition
Post by: Clonehead on August 01, 2010, 09:07:31 AM

PRESENTING THE AUGUST 2010 IMPERIAL SHIPYARDS FIGURE REPAINT COMPETITION

Folks, Here is a new contest that will run from today, the 1st of August until midnight CST on the 31st of August.

The basics are that members can compete by REPAINTING ONE STAR WARS FIGURE to present by the ending date and time to be judged by all members for a week after the voting thread goes up after the end of the contest.

All entries must comply to the following rules:

1) entry MUST BE a Star Wars figure to be repainted by the competitor. Any size or brand of Star Wars figure will be accepted, for example, Hasbro 3 3/4 inch, 12 inch, Koto, GG, whatever. This entry is to be a repaint only. That means, no parts swapping, no parts modifying, and no parts additions. If the parts or weapons came with the figure in it's original packaging, they will be accepted but nothing else. This can be a complete repaint or just a partial. Decals or other applications of a similar nature like the decals that Wraithnine uses or even the adhesive backed foils that I have used on my figures will be accepted.
2) absolutely no cheating! If you plagiarize another creator's custom by claiming it's your own, or if you try to pad the voting by using multiple shipyards user ids, you will be disqualified. "no exceptions"
3) you must be a registered shipyards member to enter
4) your entry pics can not be photo shopped or contain any photo shopped elements
5) your entry must be an all new custom painted by you and can't have been posted here or anywhere else before the start of this competition.

Remember, this can be a clone, droid, alien, pilot, whatever, as long as it's only a Star Wars figure. "sorry, Joe fans"

All registered members are eligible to enter.
In this thread, your WIP or finished custom pics are welcome as is commentary in regards to them so feel free to troubleshoot ideas with the other members, here. You may show WIP or trouble shooting pics of more than one figure in this thread but only one entry per competitor with only one figure will be accepted.
By the ending date and time, you must present 1-4 pics of your entry to staff@imperialshipyards.net  I want one of the pics to be a shot of the figure in it's "stock state" before you do any work to it, that way we can have before and after shots. "remember to include your member name" and after the end of the contest, we will host and post your entry pics on a voting page for all members to vote on for a week. If there is a tie for the 1st or 2nd place, we will have a vote off in between the entries that are tied.

Prizes are as follows:
1st place: I plan on entering in this contest myself and if I don't win 1st place, my repainted figure will be the grand prize. I will post wip pics as I am conducting the repaint of this figure.
2nd place: a random selection of my resin parts. "20  including the newest hollow helmets I am making now"
3rd place: a random selection of 9 of my resin parts. "pics of the two parts bundles can be found below"

The pics at the top of this post are just an example of what an entry could be as that is an ROTS Galactic Marine that I repainted some time ago. No Swapped or extra parts..............just a repaint.

Grab your brushes and choose a figure. May the best figure win.

Thanks, Rich. I figured that this would be an easy back-to-basics custom competition that everyone could get into.

guys, the figure doesn't have to be fresh out of the box, Per-se, it just needs to be ready to take some paint. If some accessories came with the figure, they can be used, just not altered other then to be repainted, if you want.

Watto, what would be even cooler is if you had two of that figure on hand so after you finished your repaint, you could take a pic with the stock version next to your repainted version. That would be more than acceptable and be a great shot for the voting gallery when that time comes.

By the way, I have been thinking about it and I believe I might choose a mando figure to repaint for my entry.

Hell yeah baby I'm in,  now the only problem is which to choose a 12" or 3-3/4", and are we allowed to base them?

As in create a base to put em on? It doesn't bug me, Ron, but the figure should be the center focus. As long as everybody understands that we will be voting on the repainted figure and not the base, I don't have a problem with it. If I have time, perhaps i will make a little base for mine and include it as part of the 1st place prize.

Cheers Clint and if I do base it it will be minor basing anyway.

I will root around in my fodder boxes and try and find something to work on...

I knew that this facet of this competition would be hard on you, Devin, but I figured it would keep the more novice of us custom guys out there from being intimidated by some of the knife work and modding that some of us here do.

Sorry, buddy.

Sounds like a great idea Clint. It is hard to hold back to a straight repaint but this one will be fun none the less. Now the hard part is to figure out what figure to repaint.

are we limited to figures?  or can we do a vehicle repaint?  just curious...
if not... maybe a later contest could be a repaint contest of one of the new mini-rig packs?

Just figures this time, Devin. That is a good idea about a deluxe vehicle repaint contest though.

Well, as I had said, I chose the tac animated Fett figure to paint for my entry. My plan is to looseMely base his paint apps around the CW Pre Vizsla figure, and by loosely, I mean to make the markings pretty much the same, and use dark colors for the armor and undercoverings. I chose this polly s flat black "which is really a dark grey, for the armor, and will use a darker black for the under coverings. I had considered using a grey and black camo scheme on the under coverings but am not sure. We will see.

DNS, how can you quit before you start? Don't be so hard on yourself.  Get in there and start painting man!

Looking good Clint.

Are we allowed to put a CW helmet on a Saga body for this? or is that concidered a mod?

Hi All

Loving what you are doing with it Clint,  and just to double check we can have a figure for example a Snowtrooper and paint it up anyway we want or keep to it's original colour scheme?

You can repaint the figure in whatever color scheme you want.

All parts have to be what was on the stock figure. This is just a repaint of the original figure and the acessories that came with that figure alone. No new parts added.

I didn't get much time to work on the legacy Pre Vizsla this weekend as I had to work on Sat and had a date today but I am getting a little bit done. I got most of his undercoverings painted testors flat black and even started working on his helmet.

I have also been working on  the castings that will make up the 2nd place prize. I only have 9 parts made, so far, but the pile will grow. There is 1 hollow mando bucket, one hollow arf bucket, and one hollow barc bucket in there, so far. also, there are a couple of the evo clone pilot heads.

I made an Endor AT-AT Driver. It's repaint of the TLC Wave 12 version with removable helmet. I used Revell paints and also Warhammer decals.

Ars30- that is a very original take on a RC. Very bold choices and they all paid off. Awesome looking RC man!

Clint - looks great so far, those colors are going to be awesome!

Fiala - another very original take on the AT-AT driver uniform. I too think they would have worn something different on Endor. That is freaking awesome! I have wanted to come up with a design for this but I love yours. The paint work is off the chain man! Well done, I can just imagine the base you will come up with for this guy. :o

If you are including weapons, they can only have come in the original packaging of your figure when you bought it. If the figure in question was a saga legends figure and came with a weapon pack, I guess that it's ok. I wrote the rules and didn't even consider that possibility.

Christoph, I love your atat driver, buddy. That turned out so cool.
Looks like this competition is rolling folks. Have you been painting??

Found the perfect figure for this project... it was one I was planning on keeping MIB but I accidentally stepped on it :( so I got to looking at it and the perfect Idea popped into my head for this.  I doubt it'll compare to these awesome figures that have already been shown... and It'll be very dificult for me not to add stuff to it to realy make it how I want to.......

what I plan on doing, if it's ok per you guys, is repaint the figure and submit it, and then continue to customize the figure by adding extra accessories and parts to post in my customs thread and NOT be part of this competition... so for all intents and purposes i'd be doing two seperate customs.

anywho
I'm realy looking forward to seeing your legacy pre-visla clint.  Good choice going with the animated boba that doesn't have the removable helmet, that makes the most sense....  are you going to leave the range finder intact?

allen, the RC looks superb! love the details in the armor and the insignias

Fiala, You took one of my ideas and did it more superbly than I'd ever had even attempted!  The endor AT-AT driver is absolutely gorgeous.  I love the camo scheme, simple and effective!  I was actually thinking about getting a new B-at-at and painting it up endor style and doing a crew to match, but after seeing that I think I'll just admit defeat and stick to hoth-deco!

I am anxious to see your project, Spud. Yep, I was planning on leaving the rangefinder and as per the rules of the contest, I have to.
My idea was that this could be a Pre vizsla from a different timeline, either before or after the clone wars version that we had seen.

I present, for your viewing pleasure, Teen Boba...

years after the tradgedy that left him an orphan Boba becomes an outcast to society... trained in the art of the hunt by his father early in his life bounty hunting is his blood...  Befriended by Aurra Sing, Bossk and other bounty hunters during the clone wars he began his journy to find himself...

During his teens Boba dons his own personalized set of mandalorian armor, drawing influences from his dying culture's traditions as well as modifying his father's armor...  Much of his armor was custom made for himself, and made to fit his smaller frame....
as he still had alot of growing to do to fill his father's shoes......

I handpainted EVERYTHING on this figure.  It took me a total of 7 hours strait to paint this figure...  ALOT of fine detail touch ups and fixing screw ups...
This figure is a repaint of the mandalorian that came in the speeder bike vehicle pack.  I used pre-visla as the "original" comparison figure because I forgot to take pictures of the figure before I started :(....
Please bear in mind that the figure meant for this contest is ONLY the repainte Clone Wars mando, NOT the other figures in the pictures, those are there only to show scale, and comparison, and for fun.

thanks guys, let me know what you think!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the praise.  I think the lines on the backpack could be touched up in alot of places, I did it close to last and I'd been up for a LONG time so I was getting tired and more than a little crosseyed.

I'm happiest with how the chest and shoulder emblems turned out.  I don't think the photos do them justice as to just how small I was able to get them.... I impressed myself with those even! lol.

I'm actually realy proud of myself on this one.  I pushed myself to try and get every tiny detail as close to perfect as I could.  I think it turned out realy well, even if it doesn't do well in the contest I'm happy with it! :)

well thanks!  I don't think it's quite up to par with the other master painters here so I take that as a great compliment.

there are alot of things I realy envisioned for this figure that I might actually wind up doing after the contest is over.  I would love to add a range finder to the helmet.. or at least use a helmet that has a rangefinder allready.  I'd like to add movie style gauntlets instead of the animated featureless gauntlets (what's with that anyway? were they realy like that in the episode!?)  I'd also like to have given him a removable helmet with a young jango/clone head sculpt... as well as his traditional fett-rifle...

BUT... per the rules I couldn't do any of that! lol.  it was very tough not to, at one point I was getting the jango head out and trying it on the figure and i had to stop myself! lol

I hear you on that, Devin. I am so used to casting up and adding whatever parts that I want or fabbing a cape or kama, this was kind of different for me also but, I did to several straight up repaints last year so, it's not bugging me too much. As I get closer to getting the paint apps squared away, the more excited I get about it and that's what really matters to me. I have been painting on the Pre Viszla/animated debute fett today, as well as casting some parts for the 2nd place prize on this, my only day off this week. I will try to get some progress pics up later.

Great job guys, on what entries we have seen so far.

Hey guys I just sent in my email for submission so I hope its ok to post this!  My submission is a repainted Commander Cody figure.  He is now Clone Marshall Commander Vinn of the 501st (my invention of course).  I repainted his orange highlights with blue.  Painted his armor damage.  Gave him some silver drybrush on his battle damage and weathered him.  I tried to keep it super simple as per the contest criteria.  Thank you for creating a great website for star wars customs and contests!
Enjoy! I am enjoying seeing everyone else's entries.

Well after a little wait to finally post it here this is my entry. I got an ARF trooper and made it a shadow ARF. The figure in my opinion should have been a shadow trooper in the first place. A red mask under the visor thing on their helmet makes them so much more intimidating. Well enough about how it was made. Here it is MY SHADOW ARF!!! ;D

Nice shadow arf trooper, Squirepec!

I am really pleased with the turnout so far. We are seeing some great repaints here.

I have some update shots of my Legacy Pre Vizsla figure. I have a ways to go on this one but pretty much have his base color scheme complete. Remaining chores on this one include........Painting up his belt and holster, adding details to his gauntlets and leg pocket tools, painting the cape, and perhaps emulating some of the Clone Wars figure's symbols on this figure.

i personally would like to see bossk...  second to fett he was always one of my favorite of the ESB bounty hunters.  That, and I think troopers are a little over-done, you don't see many bossk customs!

Well, I decided to go in a completely different route than I had originally intended, mostly because I couldn't settle on colors and patterns.  So, and don't ask me how, I settled on doing a McQuarrie Concept Blue Star Snowtrooper...

In the 1980s, there was a Turkish knockoff Star Wars Snowtrooper called "UZAY Blue Stars."  These were Snowtroopers, painted blue with yellow and red highlights.  The image of the original figure is here...

Now, I pulled a McQuarrie Concept Snowtrooper from my shelf, deciding to go this route.  I did so, mostly because it was like a double-concept to me.  I do need to paint the rifle white, as in the original picture above, and I also need to go back and touch up the eyes on this.  However, here he is, my UZAY Blue Star, if Ralph McQuarrie had decided to go and do some concept art for it.

pat that has got to be the most left-field entry yet.  Perfect! I love it.  the idea is great, The old vintage knock offs are an interesting piece of the star wars history that most NOOB fans don't even know about.  I was only introduced to it a few years ago while researching boba-fett figure variants...  there are some interesting (and realy shoddy) coppy vintage figs from other countries out there...

as far as the paint work goes, I definately agree with your personal critique, the eyes need tightening up and the gun def. needs to be white.  If I were you I'd also go out and get a cheap can of clear matte or flatt clear spray paint and coat him in that to cut down on the glossyness.  It's too shiny.

Got some update shots of the legacy pre viszla fig that I am painting up.
I got the detail colors on his gauntlets, flame thrower hoses, and leg pouch tools and knee dart shooters. I also got the first base coat of color on his little cape. I am wanting to emulate the viszla figure's symbols on his arms and helmet and went ahead and did some work on the arm ones. I like the one in just red but need to touch up that one some and the one on the shoulder some more. Getting closer on this one but not done yet.

remember, you can click on to these pics to make em bigger.

In both comparrison shots, the real pre viszla is on the right.

I might be a little late to the party but I have a custom in the works. Took an old POTF figure and repainted his flight suit blue. I got the idea from the Action Fleet Y-Wing featuring Blue Leader. His flight suit was blue and I always thought it would be cool to have an actual figure in a blue flight suit, as opposed to the usual orange.

That would be a great one to use, Rich.

I do believe I am calling my entry complete now. I will post higher res pics in my custom figures thread.

I want to thank everyone for their great feedback during the production of this repaint. It was a lot of fun but so was seeing every one elses entries so far.
Keep em coming folks as there is only a couple of days left.

Gladiator Clone

When Clones are captured in battle some are taken to Geonosis to fight Gladiator style in the Arena. They are pitted agains beast such as Rancor, Nexu and Gondar; as well as other Slaves and POWs of the Separatist.

Some Clones smear the blood of their conquest on their armor after victory

Only small arms Blasters are allowed in the arena

Before & After - I lost the visor in the grass in my back yard :'( The bad thing it was painted already. Hope this does not disqualify him.

Clonesniper:  Dang!!!! That Bane is cool, Loads better than his original colors.

Dave: your clone ROCKS buddy!

Clint:  how did you get his cape into those colors???  Did you paint it?? I am drawing a blank on how you did that!

Clonesniper I really like your Bane! Very well done with top notch paint aps. The gold on the mask is very nice, stands out a lot more and looks 100 times better than the original.

Vader9900 that is one awesome Gladiator Clone. Love the color scheme and it is so well done. The blood marks are a great touch to break up the black. Very nice weathering as well.

DNS nice job on the concept Fett. Cool color scheme and nicely applied.

Goldleaderone I love that you did the Blue Leader! Not too many people taking on the pilots there are just so many of them! It looks like he is wearing glasses? Is he?

I got mine done just in the nick of time. This is a commission for Jaxon Sprywalker. He is giving me a big hug when I turn it over to him. It all started when he was checking out my custom ROTS Commander Gree and he said dad, will you paint me a CW Gree that looks like that? I said sure and he handed me an extra Gree that we had and I slapped some paint on it. Now I took a few liberties and kind of meshed the ROTS scheme with the cartoon CW scheme, enough with the jawin' here he is.

wow!  loads of awesome in these last few entries.

sprywalker:  that gree is very nice.  I don't care too much for the animated figures, but the clones are the best out of the series.  I realy like what you've done here by blending the ROTS camo color scheme onto the figure.  I'd love to see an arf trooper done up like the at-rt driver from the movie...

vader9900:  GREAT concept, I love the idea that the clones would be put into a battle arena just like the geonosians did to anakin, padme, and obi-wan...  I love the claw marks on the armor.  As for the lost visor... I tend to be very careful to leave any small accessories inside or use a clear rubber band to hold them on whenever I'm going outside to take photos or set up for dio shots... and by "take photos and set up for dio shots" I mean play. ;)

darknosaur: Very nice use of the concept boba.  Do you have problems with that figure's body falling in half at the torso joint? Mine always did and I wound up loosing the cover to the stomache blaster!  I like the fact that you went with something totally original in yours and didn't try to adhere to any pre-concieved paint scheme.

clonesniper:  That is amazing work with the bane figure.  I love the look of the armor now that it's not completely transparent, it realy brings out the details in the sculpting.  The mask is very well done, the gold must have been a pain to paint, how many coats did you go through to get such a smooth application?

The entries are rolling in now.

LE, I love the rots paint apps on the clone wars gree! What a great idea, kind of a transitional phase to the gree figure.

Clone sniper, I love what you have done to darth bane. I always thought that this was kind of a hokey looking figure and you have certainly made an improvement across the board on that one. He turned out sharp looking.

Vader, I love the gladiator clone. I think we can live without the visor if you legitamtly lost it."what a bummer for you, I am sure" Love the back story on that one.

Darknsour, Rich, I love what you have done with the concept Fett fig. Like Spud, I love the originality of it and I knew that would be a great figure to repaint. That guy would look right at home with a pow wow of battle hardened mandos.

Lucas  clones, Yes, I just repainted the cape. I mixed the same blue that I used for his armor with white to get that lighter hue and the green was the olive drab that I used for his holster and belt with some of the blue mixed in.  I was matching to the cw pre viszla cape colors but as the animated Fett's cape was folded, I didnt bother with the bird symbol and just tried to emulate the stripes.

Hey Spudafett, I used like 2 and half coats. Some areas of the mask needed a little more touching up than others. That plastic is slippery and the paint just doesn't want to stick to it. I just got my tiny brush wet and the paint just goes on smooth.

I've noticed that with alot of the newer figures and accessories hasbro is putting out that the rubbery plastic they are using is, as you so aptly put it, slippery.  Idk if they are putting somekind of finish on the rubber that prevents paint from sticking or if it's just the rubber itself but it is very frustrating.   Has anyone tried any techniques (other than using primer) to make a better painting surface on small parts like this?  what is frustrating for me is that as soon as you get it painted and you think it's dried and cured you pop it onto the figure and the paint rubs right off.   I'm even using only acrylic paints, as I know that enamels wouldn't even cure when used on this rubber-plastic...
I wonder if rubbing the figure with a quick rub of paint thinner would "roughen" up the surface enough to take paint better?

believe it or not i have had this problem and have found that hard and heavy drybrushing(or "Grinding" as i like to call it) with your intended colour helps to give something for the paint to key to

It is mold release on the figures and parts. Wash them with warm water and dish soap before you start to paint. Rubbing alcohol works well too. Use a old toothbrush and cotton swabs to get into corners. I do that before I start to paint any fig and never had a problem.

Sweet Vader! Do you guys think paint thinner or maybe even light sanding with fine sandpaper would be a good idea? I know I would be afraid of changing the surface too much, but it might look like battle damage on a clone or mandalorian.

Instead of sandpaper try scraping the surface with one of your duller xacto blades.  I have used that to draw on my figs with india ink(this is how I got my fine lines on Eyeball and other).  Without scraping the ink rubs right off with scraping it soaks in and is permanent.  I think what Vader said about rubbing alcohol is a good solution too.  Scraping is good though if you want a more weathered look.

You guys are right, there are so many awesome repaints in this thread! How can you pick just one as the best? I have no clue...there are so many different types and then different styles it is going to be too hard to narrow it down. I wish there was a way to make it impossible for you to vote for your own custom. Each customizer would have to pick one of their piers as the best. Now that would be interesting. One way woul be allowing us to submit our vote to a mod that did not enter the competition, then the mod could submit it. What do you think? I may be making this too much work but I thought it was an interesting concept.

I honestly try NOT to vote for myself... but I'll admit that I have in the past if I can't decide on anyone else's submission.

It will definately be interesting to see how the voting plays out.  How long will voting be open?  I hope you display it on the FP news feed.

I think most people do vote for themself , we even had someone create 12 accounts to make themself win. Now how lame is that? I think this is a great discussion and would love to hear what everyone thinks. I can not wait to see the gallery for this

Great job getting the voting thread and the gallery up and running, Pat!

Guys, this was a great competition and I am proud to see all of the great entries that were submitted. I had planned on this one just being a "back to basics competition" and am thrilled with what everyone came up with.

Good luck to you all and everyone, please take the time to check out the gallery and get your vote in.
