That's right, Joe. Feel free to post wip pics of your project here but before the deadline, you must email in your entry pics.
This will allow builders who may want to post pics of more than one droid project in this thread. Just remember that when it comes time to submit your entry. Only pics of one custom droid will be accepted for your one entry.

Oh cool! This looks like fun. Pretty cool that it can be any type of droid. I hope to have time to enter this as I love droids. I just got home from teaching a class from 6-8:30 and will be doing it 3 nights a week. Hey Clint I like the idea of the BAD swap shop. A custom fodder community chest was started at RS and I am on the list after 4 more people. That would be cool here as well. Back on topic, let the droid works begin!

OK, im definitely entering this contest. Target's got 20% off star wars here so i'll go see if there are any droids to pick up!! Also, a BAD swap thread would be great!!

Keep in mind that one could use a non-droid action figure and make it look like a droid. Also, there are literally thousands of everyday items you could use to scratchbuild a droid as well. Don't think that you would have to have some kind of droid figure to start on a project for this contest.
Well, that's three requests for a BAD parts swap thread. I guess I will go and make one now.

UPDATE: Here's the thread.

question.....

does the contest entry have to be an entirely NEW droid or can it be a customized version of an extablished cannon droid character?

For example,  if the entry was a scratch built version of c-3p0 or R2-d2?

Either way expect me to participate in this contest.... I am going to be getting fodder asap....

Yes, Devin, a custom version of a cannon droid would be fine.

clint, what your actually hearing are the gears grinding against each other.... ;)

simon it will be super arty (or at least as close as I can manage...).

I'm actually very close to finishing already.  I just need to make a few minor additions and give the figure a fresh coat of paint to blend all the parts back together and it'll be done....

Picked up a base figure for this today.

Got the top part modified and assembled, just have to decide how I'm going to handle the legs.

Also of note, we just wrapped a "Feral Droid" contest over at www.yakface.com, check it for some great custom inspiration!

well, as you probably guessed I was doing an IG-88 figure.  I have been wanting to do one of these for a long time and never got the motivation to do it, so this contest got the ball rolling.  I had a day off from work today so I went on and finished him up and got him posted...

I wanted to use a vintage OTC IG-88 but couldn't find one... I was able to find an IG-lancer droid which was close enough.  I highly modified the lancer droid and replaced MOST of it's limbs with the arms and legs from a TCW IG-86 assassin droid.  This gives the new figure it's better articulation.

The flamethrower attachment to the gun is actually the attachment for the lance that came with the lancer droid.  and the flamethrower's tank is from an "corps!" diver set.  and the flame effect is from the mcquarrie concept boba fett.

so, without further ado, here is the finished figure:

You beat me to it, Spud! Very nice work on the IG! And that's some arsenal he's toting!

I had so much fun making my first Corpse Droid I decided I'd revisit the concept for this contest.

I picked up the Clone Wars Space Suit Obi-Wan this afternoon for my base figure, and just started adding some human and droid parts to it.  I can spend months, and in some cases YEARS working on a custom, it's a very satisfying feeling when one comes together in one day.

I think he's mostly done... but I've got most of a month to decide if I want to make any changes before I submit him I suppose:
Here he is examining his newest acquisition...

The Corpse Droid was a concept from the original Force Unleashed game, the idea being it's a maniac droid that's obsessed with becoming human and harvest living parts to build itself a body.

GIJOE Skeleton - Head
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Space Suit/Clone Wars) - Body, Helmet
Concept Starkiller Hero - "Breathing" device and hoses
Emperor Palpatine Clone - Thigh and Hand
4-LOM - Legs
CZ-4 - Arms

Oh, two questions regarding some rules clarification:

5) your entry pics can not be photo shopped or contain any photo shopped elements
My photo is corrected and tweaked for color and lighting in Photoshop. I assume this is allowed, and we're meant to stay away from cutting and pasting, adding effects, etc.

6) your entry must be an all new custom made by you and can't have been posted here or anywhere else
Once they've been posted here, I assume it's okay to show them elsewhere before the contest if over?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the photoshop issue is to avoid people placing figures in simulated environments or photoshopping existing figures together... I would assume light correction would be ok... and I assume that adding labels, text, and inset images like I did was ok....LOL I hope it was ok!

and I'm pretty sure as long as the custom is something that was done for this contest that's all that matters.  I went on and posted my figure on another forum and posted the images to my deviantart gallery as I always do.... but I made it clear in both places that the figure was for this contest.  I also posted an image in my figure thread with a link to this thread... so I think showcasing your figure elswhere is ok.  Just as long as it's not a figure that has been posted somewhere months/weeks/days ago that was somethign done previous to the anouncement of this contest....

now... back to what matters.   Your zombie droid rocks!  I love the look of that thing.  It's perfect.   I still think your original concept figure looked like dr. Krauss from hell-boy though!

That one's helmet, upper body, and arms all came from a Hell-Boy 2 figure, so that might be why! :D

Nice job, Spud and Dan! No, I don't have a problem with the bit of photo editing that your pics have. Like you thought, that rule was to prevent any photoshoppimg of backgrounds or details added to your figure entries. This includes no flame or glowing effects like glowing eyes or anything like that.

These two are obviously setting the bar high, fellers, but don't let these impressive builds intemmidate your efforts. I'm still planning something to do for this contest, also.

Shawn, can you fp these two, buddy?

any hints to what you might be doing?   My curriosity is piqued.

I've been thinking about things to add or do differently to my ig-88 but can't realy pin any ideas down...   I was considering scratch building an IG-2000 (his personal ship) but I'm not sure how I'd pull off the menuevering vanes.  AND I probably would never finish it... not to mention It wouldn't be part of my entry, it'd just be for s and g's.

Maybe make some guns or gauntlets for weapons?
Or a throne, he is "king of the droid revolution" in the novels & comics, right?

I really like your IG-88 by the way.

I would potentially like to do 3 more of these figures since there was an IG-88 A, B, C, and D.  they all posed as the same droid, and had identical personality subroutines...   But that would get expensive.

I might try and figure out a way to do some different weopons and whatnot.  IDK yet.  I'm still looking for a VOTC Ig-88 so that I could have the more accurate head sculpt and the bandolier and weopons it comes with...   If I were to get a VOTC ig I'd probably go on and get another Animate IG-86 and do a completely new figure...

But for now, I'm leaving my entry the way it is.

I can't wait to see everyone else's

I think I might have to make an R4-D5, or something along those lines, using a CW version(at least a repaint!), and add something to it, but I doubt I could surpass the two already posted so far!  Great work, guys!

Okay... without spoiling anything, and also cause I have some other customs that I have to try to finish before I get too far on anymore projects... I'm gonna attempt a "female" assassin droid.  I put together some parts just to see if they worked, and it looks promising... but we'll see. If I get "her" parted together before I take some more WIP pics for another project, I'll snap one for here..

I couldn't find a pic online, but I got the idea from the creepy transformer pretender chick from Revenge of the Fallen, "mechanical" dreadlocks and all...  ;)

The clone wars Protocol droid sculpt works well from "female" droid parts.
Here's one a did a while ago:
I used the shoulder pieces as her bewbs, but really didn't like how they looked with such a sharp angle, so I modified it as seen here:

Not perfect, but I was satisfied for this attempt. I'll probably revisit the concept in the future and try the whole torso differently.

Also, I added a bit of blood to the Corpse Droid:

I have been mulling over doing one of the female droids seen in the clone wars cartoon lately... but figured that hasbro will eventually release a figure of them, probably in legacy style and meant for collectors since a female droid might seem a little racy for the children oriented line....

this is the only reference image I can find on the clone wars version of the "betty bot"

Eventually I'll probably try and make this figure.... Someone should attempt it for this contest, I'd like to see it done.

That CW droid looks interesting. You gonna tackle it Devin?

The clone wars Protocol droid sculpt works well from "female" droid parts.
Here's one a did a while ago:
I used the shoulder pieces as her bewbs, but really didn't like how they looked with such a sharp angle, so I modified it as seen here:
Not perfect, but I was satisfied for this attempt. I'll probably revisit the concept in the future and try the whole torso differently.

That's too funny Dad(in an awesome way)... I actually have a 3PO hacked up for this too, gonna use part of the head, the lower torso and arms. As soon as I saw the lil' guy, I was like.. man, 3PO looks like a chick, lol.

Someone should attempt it for this contest, I'd like to see it done.

Actually, while mines' not gonna be exactly like her, the legs are partly inspired by the look of the clone wars one(My so and I were just recently watching some episodes)...I'm gonna use some Marvel figure's legs and try to bash them onto the 3PO torso... I guess I should try to get to it, instead of just talking about it, lol.  It would be cool to see someone tackle her, weren't they also in RotS?
EDIT: Here's the ones I was thinking of: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/BD-3000_luxury_droid

We can do that next month...  ;)

I might wind up doing a fem-droid just for S and G's... the more I look at it the more I want to tackle it.  I think I know the perfect parts for the hips/legs too.  But it won't be my contest entry, I still like IG-88.

Phatty, is your base figure the "dark woman" from the comic pack?  I don't realy reconize it.  I like the purple coloring though, that looks so SMOOTH.

Well heres my entry almost completed. I'm still sort of spitballing ideas but so far this is the only good one to come out. The pictures don't do it any justice he looks really cool on my end. It is just a kitbash of many Greivouses. He is the clone wars general greivous body, and legs/ ROTS sneak preview greivous arms. I had to sculpt with modeling clay to get the new head and body though. Tell me what you guys think he is supposed to be an EG series Jedi hunter droid.

Tell me what you guys thin. I still need to find him a cape and possibly a more metallic silver and red paint.

I like it squirepec.  looks realy good.  The sculpted head is pretty awesome.  It looks slightly lopsided, but unless you realy look it's not noticable.  You said you used modeling clay?  Did you let it harden or fire it somehow?

If your interested in sculpting over plastic figures and not having to cook the clay to harden it you should look into apoxie sculpt sculpting medium.  It's a two part, self hardening claylike simulant.  Its what I use to do all my sculpting.  It's fairly expensive, but even the small 1 lb kit goes a long long way.

I added a few greeblies to my IG-88 figure.

I added the third digit to his hands by cutting them off the original's forearms and then carefully gluing them onto the animated forearms.  I think he looks closer to the original figure now with just this simple addition.  Before the animated figure's forearms just looked realy bare.

My base figure is Lumiya from the comic pack, the head comes from Charbroil from G.I. Joe ROC figs, the lower Jedi tunic comes from an AOTC Anakin, and the upper tunic pieces come from Marvel Legends Omega Red.  Then I have to accessorize her quite a bit yet.  I'm still not sold on the neck portion.

Well here are the three ideas I've been shooting around to do for the contest. So far is seems it might be the EG-O5 droid, but I might do a air battle droid, or a junk droid. Here are some pics.
EG-05 Jedi Hunter Droid.

Air Battle droid.

Or a junk droid.

It does look cool but I'll have to track down one of the Hawk joes to get his wings. I think he is probably the one I'll do.

Well guys I changed my mind and went with the Air Battle Droid instead. This for sure will be my entrant. Here are some WIP pics of the figure. I took a Super Battle Droid's legs and a clone wars Battle droid for the head, arms, and upper body. The wings I just cut out of cardboard.

hell yeah.  That's going to look awesome!  I was thinking about using the chest and arms of one of the TCW tactical droids and the lower half and legs of the super battle droid... Then figure out something for the backpack.  The gen. hawk's pack would look good but it doesn't realy fit the style.  I was thinking more along the lines of the new spacetrooper's backpack with sculpted wings:

OK, just got chance to check this thread out and there are some great entries in already. Also I love seeing the WIP pics of what everyone is developing.  Pat I really like that Lumia body for a female droid.I just started on my entry yesterday and have decided to finish the droid then show my pics. My entry is going to be kind of odd or atleast very different than anything I have done before. I think WIP pics will spoil the final result in this case. So I hope to be back by next week with the my entry.

Thanks, L.E.!  I put on some more touches today, painting the robotic a beautiful gold, and adding accents to the helmet.  I painted the lower tunic and upper shoulder sash as well.  The next go around, I have to paint the robotics on the legs, and then work on the upper tunic pieces to get them how I like them.  Then again, I may not: I think it's looking pretty nice without them.  I'd have to add in some features to the neck area, but I have ideas for those as well.

Hey everyone.  Customs dept here - aka ric.sea.jedi on the evil bay, aka Sean.  Here is my custom droid.  The backstory goes something like this:
The droid was once an imperial probe droid, kept in the same area as torture droids, medical droids ...you name it.  I call him, simply - IX.
What began as an accidental activation, resulted in this droid becoming 'self-aware' to coin a phrase.  At the moment, it developed an IG-type 'thought' pattern, viewing all organic life forms as those to be exterminated, as soon as possible, without provoking life-form response in the form of offensive attack.
In other words, the droid would transfer victims to a more private environment, before torturing, maiming, and killing the life form obtained, hence avoiding any witnesses which may alert other organics.
This led to an EV-9D9 'mentality' (you know what I am talking about if you have read "Tales From Jabba's Palace) . . . .IX devloped a certain . . . .zest for torture.  It liked the way the soundwaves from screams 'felt' to its scanners, which would pulse with yellow light to the 'rhythm' of the screams.  Look closely, and you will see a vast array of tools, weapons, even a syringe with a nice long needle, for whatever situation may arise.   After all, some victims may need 'calmed' until it is time for them to reeeeeallllly scream.   Hope you like it . . . otherwise, well, you will know soon enough >:D

Ok, I'm pretty much done with my entry.  I think if I add in any extras, it's going to overwhelm the figure itself.  I'm liking how it turned out, minus the neck.  I'll post the rest of my WIP shots, and then will give the backstory with the finished shots...

Name: Jayte, Jedi Knight
Designation: J-8D8
Droid Type: Humanoid War Droid
Manufacturer: Jedi Master Aqinos
Origin: A Crystaline shard with an awareness of life and Force-sensitive, Built and trained by Jedi Master Aqinos during the time of the Great Purge.  With the knowledge that the Jedi were being hunted and wiped from the Galaxy, Aqinos built a series of droids and placed such crystals inside them to combat the Sith and their Empire.  The ability of these droids to deactivate themselves when discovered, and reactivate at strategic times in order to strike out at the Sith made them excellent for combating the Empire.  However, of the 4 dozen droids built by Aqinos, only Jayte remained, as the others became reckless and attempted to take on the Empire head on, resulting in their ultimate destruction.  4 years after the fall of the Republic, Jayte reactivated herself, alone in a cave on Dweem.  Reaching out with the Force, she could feel very few Jedi left in the Galaxy.  Seeking a greater understanding, she infiltrated an Imperial stronghold on Bastion and discovered the fate of the Jedi after the Fall of the Republic.  She discovered a list of potential whereabouts of various Jedi throughout the Galaxy, and set out to find a Master who could teach her more of the Living Force.

It was then that she was discovered and sheltered by Jedi Historian Rachi Sitra, a female Twi'lek.  From her, Jayte learned a great deal of the Living Force, as well as the history of the Jedi.  It was from these histories that Jayte's droid computers were able to discern several flaws in the Jedi teachings, as well as reach clairvoyance of the deeper meanings of the Force.  After a decade under Master Sitra's tutelage, Jayte traveled to Nar Shadaa to seek out a Kiffar Healer by the name of Gotab, mysteriously dressed in Mandalorian armor.  From Gotab, Jayte was able to further gain insight into the deeper mysteries of both the Jedi and Sith, with the knowledge of how the Dark Side can corrupt subtly.  Though found to be nearly unrivaled in lightsaber combat (Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, or Mace Windu were not around to test this theory) and with the entirety of the Jedi History embedded in Jayte's databanks, Jayte refused to assume the mantle of Master.  Jayte traveled the stars, seeking out more knowledge and to attempt to reform the Jedi Council, though all attempts were to no avail.  14 years after the Fall of the Republic, Jayte deactivated herself until a time when she would be able to help with the reformation of the Jedi.  4 years ABY, Jayte was reactivated by an incredible surge of Force energy, the result of the death of Palpatine and rebirth of Anakin Skywalker.

I'm going with some sort of sexy assassin type of droid hired to seduce and take out a Senator... Hey.. who knows what those sick politicians would do with a droid...  :o

I gotta play with the "hair" a little, get the right wild look, but not so it looks too wild, lol.. the face plate comes off, it's a Magna Droid head under.. Still tinkering with the color scheme... not sure if I wanna go crisp and clean droid look, or worn and weathered... also not too sure on the "fleshy" legs, they looked cool at first, but not too good in picture form, but it might just be the hodgepodge of colors playing with my eyes... what do you guys think?

Loving all the droids so far, and can't wait for L.E. to post his, you are all in for a treat.

Joe I would get rid of the Human legs if I was you and go completely droid, this figure is rocking otherwise, and I love the hair.

Well, I can tell that it hasn't been a quiet week in this thread at all. Do you guys realize how hard it is going to be to vote from all of these great projects we have been seeing?

CD, I love your droid, buddy. That back story is pretty cool.

Pat, your droid is really rockin and that backstory had me entranced. I like that you gave her the electro grenade or what ever it is called.

Joe, your's is interesting, as well. Since she is to be a seductive droid, I guess I would go for the clean paintjob unless you are trying to depict her later in the course of her programming.

This stuff is great, guys!

As everyone knows Hammerhead is a plant lover. Here is the droid he uses to keep his landscape tidy. It has the ability to prune branches with the rotating arms with blades at the end. It can ythen clean up the mess with several arms around the main body of the droid. It features a spraying system of fertilizer and chemicals to reduce pest populations at the very top of the droid. It is also programed to pick fruit and harvest vegetables wether up in a tree of down on the ground. It is his favorite droid and he has modified it several times to fit his needs.

Phew, haven't been on in ages (Uni has just gotten crazy) and so many great entries.  Anyways i finished my entry on the weekend, so now all i need to do is submit it. Not showing any pictures though, would like my entry to remain a mystery  ;)!! Just a hint though, origin would be from KOTOR, its a product of the late Star Forge and its had at least 2 very notable owners (both in the KOTOR series). Its a completely new custom with a made up backstory so i hope everyone likes it!!

Oh, and the contest entries so far have all been of such an exceptionally high standard!! Im starting to lose faith in my poor little droid!!

Make sure everyone sends your pics to either staff@imperialshipyards.net or tamer@imperialshipyards.net as I am gonna try to get to work on some web galleries for all. I plan on doing it in no particular order and just doing entry one and so forth and then do a poll thread where you can vote. I know some of you have shown pics in this thread so it won't quite be anonymous, but we will let the pics speak for themselves. Boy this is gonna be hard to vote on. I will work as fast as I can on the galleries so we can get this going. Make sure you get your email submission in if you haven't yet.

Heres mine made him about 3 months ago.

BACK STORY.
The planet Nimhur is populated by many bounty hunters and other fugatives the wookiee Hanbahar is one such bounty hunter. After the rise of the new order he earned millions by brutally slaughtering  jedi, clone deserters and temple guards  for the empire. At least 2 jedi knights are hiding on Nimhur however the he cant search the barren ice lands to the north so he partnered up with an expert jedi killer mXXI battle droid designated JK-21.(Hanbahar custom up later this week)
JK-21 was produced to kill jedi for the seperatists. He was one of the 30 others only to be produced when Emperor palpatine landed on Mustafar his body guards were ambushed by the new droids. Following a brutal skirmish the clones beat them back. 6 droids remained and 5 were destroyed by JK-21 whose only means of the planet was a lone geonosian fighter. The best way to think of JK-21 is as hk-47 from the knights of the old republic game.

tamer@imperialshipyards.net

So far only 4 entries have been emailed according to my email log. I have lambonspit, spudafett, Fiala Fernbrugg, and bryman. Please, please, please email your pics (around an 800 pixel width would be great) so I can get to work on these web galleries so we can be ready to vote on time. Thanks.

I have everyone here I am pretty sure, with the exception of Joe Ryhno who I am not sure is going to show us his finished female assassin droid. So I am waiting to hear from him. I will post the gallery link later today and we can see if we got everyone before I start the voting poll.
