Title: DanOfTheDead - 10/8 Odion (Sith Lord)
Post by: DanOfTheDead on January 17, 2010, 01:44:54 PM
Hey everyone, I usually post over in the Custom sections at Rebelscum and Yakface, thought I'd share my work over here. Really enjoying looking through the threads here, a lot of work I hadn't seen elsewhere.

Here's some of my more recent work:
CORPSE DROID:

BULK LOADER DROID:

"LIGHTSIDE/DARKSIDE" CLONE CONCEPTS - had to share these two, I can tell Clones are pretty popular around these parts!

Just a sampling of some of the stuff I've done... looking forward to seeing more of all your customs, and sharing more of mine!

Dan I am glad you have graced us with your presence mate, I think your customs rock, and they aren't clones, lol.

Ok well two are, but the others aren't and I have seen your other work as well, so I know it's not all clones, lol.

Hey guys how about putting some of Dan's custom work on the front page, would love to see the Corpse Droid up their.

Title: DanOfTheDead's customs 2/4 Republic Commando aka "Tank"
Post by: DanOfTheDead on February 04, 2010, 09:45:08 PM
(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/rctank.jpg)

So Clone Wars got me interested in Clones, and now I'm reading the Karen Traviss Republic Commando novels. Between the two, I'm finding the Grand Army of the Republic a lot more interesting that it was initially presented in Episode 2 and 3.

RC-1308 is heavy weapons specialist (shown with his custom DC-117, a heavier but less versatile version of the DC-17) who earned the nickname "Tank" when a clerical mistake assigned him to an assault in place of a TX-130S, a Republic Fighter Tank. By the time the error could be corrected, RC-1308 had managed to actually complete the assignment on his own.

I really like the design of this guy, but he started giving me more and more problems the closer I got to being finished with him. The grey paint was too thick and went on lump, the black paint was too watery and smeared every where. I managed to glue the arm posts in place when I resealed the torso, and when I tried to replace the articulation with a wooden dowel rode, I managed to drill straight out through the shoulder.

Still, I like him, I see him as kind of a "gentle giant" for a Commando.

Recipe:
GIJOE ROC REPEATER: Head, Lower Arms, Hands, and weapon (modified)
REPUBLIC COMMANDO DELTA SQUAD SEV: Torso, Upper Arms, Helmet
GALACTIC MARINE (Order 66): Legs, Boots

i like the idea of adding the galactic marine foot wear,  you'll probably be copied on that. what i really cool about that is that when i was in the air force  we'd get rid of our boots asap and get a pair of the pilots boots as they were cooler than the regular ones so your idea is tops

Wow guys, thanks for all the kind words! And for the front page feature! Ya'll know how to make a customizer feel welcome!

I initially thought of him as an "orphan" (last remaining RC from his squad) but now I'm considering fleshing out his brothers.

Male Jedi
ROTH-DEL MASONA - Base figure

Here's a "flashback" custom of the red-haired Jedi I posted before, Leda-Mem. She's remembering a few years before, when she was a young Jedi Knight, just out of the trials.

Recipe:
GIJOE ROC SCARLETT - Head, Hands
CONCEPT STARKILLER HERO - Torso
NARNIA SUSAN - Skirt (cut down)
PADMÉ AMIDALA (Illum) - Hips
PADMÉ AMIDALA (Senator of Naboo) - Legs
PRINCESS LEIA (Medical Frigate) - Arms

Only the torso and skirt, with some detailing on the boots. Also did a light red wash on the face to make her look a little more healthy and highlight her lips a bit.
Title: DanOfTheDead's customs 2/22 "Soft-Shell" Clone Technician Haywire
Post by: DanOfTheDead on February 22, 2010, 10:04:44 PM
(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/haywire.jpg)

Clone Private 7331, nicknamed "Haywire", is a "soft-shell"; clones trained for technical tasks and operations rather than combat. (see Switch (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/CP-6824)). Assigned under Commander Trip, Haywire excels at mechanics, weapon maintenance, and slicing.

Recipe:
JANGO FETT (Bounty Hunter) - Head (probably) and forearms
MAJOR PANNO - Lower Legs
HRCHEK KAL FAS - Base Figure
NABOO SOLDIER - Helmet

I first noticed this clone design in the demo for Clone Wars Republic Heroes, and upon researching realized that they're in the background of the Clone Wars Series as well. Really love the look and the idea of less combat oriented clones, and had to make one. I think his helmet needs a mic, but otherwise I'm really happy with how he came out!

Here's a quick snapshot from the Clone Wars art book to show one from the show, usually seen in the hangar:

Thanks guys!

He's actually a little more inspired by this guy here: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/CP-6824 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/CP-6824)

That was the first time I noticed the design, didn't realize they were in the Clone Wars series until I started researching.

Picture in my post is from The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

"Haywire" here is supposed to look a little disheveled and battle-worn, but if you're interesting in doing one of these, I think the Imperial Scanning Crew figure would be a great base figure and maybe even more accurate.

Oh, and thanks for the front page highlight, Clonehead!

I'm working on Haywire, Tank (the big RC), and Trip (a Commander, don't think I've posted him here) all out of armor, more of a "civilian" look. Those should be up soon.

Awesome work on all of these Dan. You know I am a major fan of your figures and photography. You have really delivered with this update. I have never seen that head used for Kal but it is great! I love the simplicity of the head swap and repaint of the CW mando sniper. That is really slick! Thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you so much for all the feedback. I'd forgotten what a supportive, enthusiastic bunch of customizers were over here!

No womandalorians yet, but I'm thinking about some. Got a young Boba Fett in the works and well as a dusky "sandalorian".

And thanks for the front page, Tamer! It's always a great feeling to getting to enjoy the spotlight a little!

Thanks! That's exactly what I was going for... to have the proportions look just a little off. He's finally tall enough to wear the armor, but the boots are still to big, etc. Maybe he's 13 or 14 here?

A perfect transition from the comic style to the movie style, and you've got the older look absolutely spot on. I was listening to the latest Action Figure News Pod-cast last night and the folks were talking about Ashoka's character progression, so it's interesting to see your take on her, especially as you have confirmed that she survived order66.

Ashoka's character seems to be a firm favourite with the kids and should Lucas ever make a new live action movie, I bet she'd be making an appearance.

thats the mcquarrie star-hero torso isn't it?  (edit) just clicked your link, I thought I was right! Should have taken a look at that before I asked the question....

It looks great as ahsoka.  I think she looks better in the "realistic" style as her animated figure looks anorexic (as do all the animated figures actually).

Outstanding work!

The new CW head really does start to blur the look between cartoon and realistic.  Nice parts choices, especially the concept Starkiller torso; gives her the rugged, "I'm on the run" look.  Your execution here is really quite excellent!

Gosh, though, she's got big....feet.  That, to me, is the only thing that looks a bit off.  I like the concept of the partial wrapped feet, but--for the life of me--has Hasbro even made any small enough for a female body?

most excellent Ahsoka!!!! really looking terrific... and very inspiring ;)

Art, do I smell a new piece coming?   ;)

Well now I bet I could come up with a few suggestions for that! I guess the real thing would be to see how many of these are done as far as a first series to get an idea of what said layout might look like.

This is just a great thing to do Nate and I thank you for it. I will be honest, I love seeing great graphics with great customs and then seeing our banner on the bottom just pushed this to new levels.

Well, let's get these three out of the way as they're probably the least interesting of the batch, but I they still make nice background characters for the rest of the squad. You can read a little more about them here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/05/knightwatch-commando.html).

Just a little detailing on the helmets and adding the rank dot, but I promise the rest of the squad is much more thoroughly customized. :)

Always love to hear everyone's thoughts on these, hope no one's getting sick of these yet. I'm enjoying posting these day by day.

Here's Clack, the group's engineer. Read more about him here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/05/knightwatch-engineer-clack.html)!

Four more left! I think there are some neat surprises in store for those of you who've enjoyed these.

Dan, great work on Clack.

I really dig these characters that are closer to the "average joe" of the SW universe; I love to see these kinds of guys, especially when they are really well put-together (as yours always are)!

Great use of the vest jacket and the Imp Scan crew body; seamlessly done!

By the way, where did the vest jacket come from?

Thanks guys!

JediMerc, I always link to my main blog where I list the full details of the figure, here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/05/knightwatch-engineer-clack.html), and I always try to list every part I used as well as a link to the source material. In this case it's a GI Joe Resolute Cobra Trooper vest.  Though in this case I've got no idea which clone head I used or where the hands are from. :)

I left the legs the tan of the original figure... I thought they could pass for tights rather than try to match the skin tone.

A desert themed Mandalorian, or "sandalorian!" He was a pretty simple repaint to keep me busy a few weeks ago. More on him right here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/07/desert-mandalorian-sandalorian.html).

Doctor Salarus, one of two new Mass Effect inspired customs. Parts and more info over here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/08/doctor-salarus-nikto-surgeon.html)!

Volussk, a Gand Salvager (thanks for suggesting the Gand to me, Tophanan!) My other Mass Effect inspired figure, more info here (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/08/volussk-gand-salvager.html).

Who's this Mandalorian in heavy armor!?

It's me! Parts recipe is right here. (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2011/08/star-wars-self-portrait-dandalorian.html)

Thanks guys! Definitely feels good to be making stuff again after a creative slump.

'Sniper, exactly! I really enjoy working on Mandos but am always looking for ways to make them look like more than just palette swaps on Jango and Boba. I figured this was a great chance to make one with a bigger body type and heavier armor.

Really great update Dan!  Love your "Dandalorian": excellent use of parts and the little touches like the knee armor make this a terrific fig.

There's something about Dr. Salarus, he really has an old-time sci-fi feel to him.  I like the coloring and the base fig you used here.

Nice work, as always!

Really appreciate all the feedback as always guys.

I agree, that was a lot of the appeal of that base figure to me, it had a nice classic sci-fi feel to it, but I saw how I could also tie in Mass Effects much more "modern" sci-fi feel with some color and the black lining. I'm VERY tempted to pick up some more if the vintage figures go on sale again, I could see doing a few more with yellow or blue in place of the red, kind of like a Star Wars take on the classic/TNG 'Trek uniforms.

Always a nice feel when a piece you feel came out well is well received!

I have been around a few customs, when I see good work it hits the front page. And you are quite welcome, I consider it an honor to be among such talented artists and have you fine folks share your work here. I wish I had more hours in the day to do said work better justice.

Yeah, definitely; I'd love to know what base figure the Mando Chest armor is...  (Rav Bralor, or Isabet Reau, if I'm not mistaken?)

I had no idea you used the term "Sandalorian" before me. I really thought I had coined that. I'd never seen your Sando till tonight. I guess great minds really do think alike. I've built on my Sandalorian and expanded the Sandalorians into a tribe of Tatooine desert dwellers raiding and stealing from Tatooine settlers and farmers, Imperial garrisons and outposts, and Tusken Raider camps and clans. Also borrowing their armor, culture and creating improvised weaponry. They also steal and modify their own ground vehicles such as speeders, tanks, walkers and abandoned mining vehicles. I'll be posting an update about them at some point. Cool that we both thought of that name!

Hey everyone, it's been a while. Looking to try and get a little more active in the Star Wars community again, so I thought I'd show some stuff I've been working on.

On the Star Wars front, here's an Order 66 survivor inspired by the latest Yakfinities theme (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=7690).

Arys "Styx" Takar

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/Figures%20-%20Star%20wars/IMG_0649_zps4b26ff2b.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/10/arys-styx-takar-order-66-survivor.html)

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/Figures%20-%20Star%20wars/IMG_0653_zpsfbc6ce4d.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/10/arys-styx-takar-order-66-survivor.html)

Kerra Holt - A recent commission of a Star Wars comic character.

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/Figures%20-%20Star%20wars/kerraholt2_zps00d39df9.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/09/kerra-holt-jedi-knight.html)

Talon Ma'Tega and Oci Kent - the last two character from Hunt for the Holocron (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/search/label/hfth).

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/Figures%20-%20Star%20wars/talon_zps7ff81759.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/03/hunt-for-holocron-talon-matega.html)

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/Figures%20-%20Star%20wars/IMG_9764_zps3c8f510a.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/03/hunt-for-holocron-oci-kent_1.html)

Also, lots of GI Joe customs (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/search/label/gijoe) as that's been my main focus. As always, you can click through the images to check out the parts and more info on each figure at my site (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/).

Another commission based on a comic character:

Odion (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/10/odion-sith-lord.html)

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa220/ashexmachina/odionfinal_zpsa965fefb.jpg) (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/10/odion-sith-lord.html)

Parts recipe available at my site (http://dan-of-the-dead.blogspot.com/2014/10/odion-sith-lord.html), as always.

Is there a way to force the images to display a little smaller with the forum code? I use the 1000p high image for my site archive, but it seems like overkill on the forum.

Wow, great looking character. Off to share.

As far as the image I kinda like to see em about this size to be honest, but if you want em smaller you can manipulate a width and height parameter using the bbc code img tag.

Odion looks awesome! I think your Order 66 concept worked great; a wonderful combination of parts. Talon Ma'Tega is a great concept figure - really cool. I also like that the Kerra Holt (do I sense a bit of a theme emerging?). Keep up the inspiring work.
