Hi All
New to this forum and just thought that I would show you all the dio's that I have done over the years, some of you know my work already but for those that haven't enjoy and comments are always welcomed.
I have added a link as there are alot of pics so I figured that this would be the best way for you all to see them.

Ron my friend good to see you here. That Tatooine Patrol Clint posted is also one of my favorites as well. Don't forget there is also a non SW section that can house all those amazing Indy projects of your. As Clint said everyone hold on to your seat Ron Hemble is one of the best at modifying and improving anything he touches. IMO and no brown nosing just stating the facts. Welcome to the Yards Ron!

I just wanted to say thanks heaps for the very warm welcome and look forward to looking thru and replying to everyones forums sections over the next week.
I also wanted to say that I'm really glad that you all have enjoyed viewing dio's and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll be more then happy to answer them.
Clonehead - No I haven't seen one of the new Legacy AT-ST at all but I can't wait to get my mits on a few so I cando a huge dio with them.

that atst is amazing, it looks like a studio model. I couldn't believe it used to be a POTF chicken walker...
Something I thought was pretty cool is that you have turned these basic figures and toys into amazing models. The technique of glueing the joints tight and then puddying them up so that they are hidden is something I'd have never even considered doing...

I honestly think so and I started modeling when I was 12 yrs old, my dad got me my first tank kit and I haven't stopped since.

Hi All
While on patrol in the Benzin Plateau the 168th Recon Squadron come under attack by a horde of Tusken raiders, taken by surprise the 168th loose a number of men.
Realizing that his out manned the captain orders his men into a defensive position which is a futile attempt as this will there Last Stand. All the figures and base were painted and weathered using Valejo and GW paints and pastels.
RECIPE
The figures - The Troopers are a mix of Hasbro's Sandtroopers and Stormtroopers and have been glued at the joints and then the joints have been puttied up. The Tusken Raider is also from Hasbro and and has been glued into position.
The flag I made on PSP6 and then printed off and the pole is from the bits box, the writing on the flad was done by a SW font and the top reads ( 168th Recon Squadron) and the bottom reads (Empire before all else).
The Base - Is a picture frame from a two dollar shop and the sand/rocky base is a mixture of plaster, sand and kitty litter.

Hemble, I've just been staring at that Dio that Clonehead posted of yours... I've continued staring as I can't believe my eyes, that can't be a Hasbro ATAT you've customised, yet it looks like it is.... It really is an unbelieveable piece of work.

Upon receiving information that a rebel base has been detected on a remote jungle planet on the Outer Rim borders the Empire send a team of Commando Scouts to Investigate. After a week of searching the Scouts finally come across a faint single in some ruins, the team start to search the ruins for ant possible Rebels.
RECIPE
The figures - The Troopers are a mix of Hasbro's Jump Troopers, Concept Troopers and Sandtroopers. As usual I super glued the joints and puttied them up once I got the desired look the figures were painted and weathered using Vallejo, GW paints and pastels.
The Base - Is an old 12" Sideshow base I had lying around, I used a column from the 7" Disney Indy figure, the plants are fishtank plastic plants and teh undergrowth is a build up of putty and static grass.
The snake is from the 3-3/4" TLC series young indy figure from Hasbro, once all the parts were glued inplace they were painted and weatherd using Vallejo paints and pastels.

Ron, you truly have a gift that most can only dream of having. Your dios always come across as masterfully created pieces of art. I assume that you display these in a museum, and I hope to one day visit that museum, providing I can afford the entry fee. I would imagine that fee would be pretty steep, considering that your work is undoubtedly the headlining showpiece, drawing swarms of fans from across the globe.
I'm ALWAYS dumbfounded and awestruck....I guess you could say awefounded or dumbstruck.... when seeing anything by you, the living legend.
I know I'll tell my grandchildren that I've had the pleasure of communicating you with, through various channels, and they will view me as someone who somewhat knows a true celebrity. Does Australian people refer to you as Lord Ron, or Sir Ron or what?
If you resided in the States, you may find it difficult to go out in public, and mingle with the mortals, since you would probably be bombarded by legions of fans hoping just to get a glimpse of an absolute Customizing God.

Well almsot completed the AT-ST here are two WIP pics of it and the ground work, I had this sitting to the side for weeks deciding whether to add figures or not but finally decided that I wanted to show just the AT-ST. I have to add a little more weathering to the AT-ST tonight and then take better pics tomorrow, so enjoy and until tomorrow.

Thanks heaps guys and finally finsihed the last of the weathering last night LMK what you all think.
Once I finally got the new Hasbro AT-ST it took me weeks to decide what to do with it and I finally decided to just have it as a stand alone diorama as you see here. As always it was painted and weathered using Vallejo, GW paints and pastels.
RECIPE
AT-ST - As mentioned above this is the new Hasbro toy, I replaced the left and right weapons with 1/35th parts from my bits box and the antenna are pieces of plasti card. I also added the back guide rails on the legs using longer pieces of plasti card. The upper interior sections of the legs were filled in using card board and plasti card.
The Base - the base is from an old computer table that I stripped down and the dead logs are from the garden at work. The dirt is from my back yard and the dead grass is from Woodland Scenics, the small stubbles of grass are from The Army Painter.

What a great dio, I absolutely love your attention to detail on the paint work. Your weathering is particularly fantastic, the variation in colour and the subtle way you accent different areas gives everything a more dramatic 3d look...

You continualy outdo yourself with each project it seems and at the same time everything you have created for a long time now is perfect. THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS REDICULOUS! Love the grass growing out of the dacayed part of the log. The weathering, well you did it so enough said.

Well in completed enjoy and as always comments welcomed.
When the Empire realized that the jettisoned escape pod had droids in it they started a complete search of the entire planet this included all settlements large and small. When the news reached Mos Eisley the Imperial Garrison started there search all over the city especially the slum areas as they knew this would be a great place to start as all types of dealings happened in this part of town especially smuggling and slave trades.
The only problem going into this part of town is that there is no law at all, so all Imperial Troops have to be extra careful when entering this treacherous area.
RECIPE
Sandtroopers - The troopers are from hasbro and have had the joints superglued and then puttied up.
The Base - the base is from a two dollar shop, the walls of the derelict buiding are pieces of foam glued together and then a mix of plaster and woodglue was applied over the top of it.
The pipes and bits and pieces on the walls are old pieces of straw and parts from the pits box, the droid parts are from Hasbro and are from the parts bin and the posters I got permission to use from bama287 over at www.fanpop.com and as always onece complete the whole dio was painted and weathered using Vallejo, GW paints and pastels.

Ron, once again you have created something extra special. The way you've posed the figures really conveys a sense of fear and aggression combined, and the scenery is perfect, I love the use of materials. I also think the custom troops are fantastic, can we have some more close ups...please!
With regard to your weathering, I'd very much like an insight onto how you do your weathering on your figures. Do you use a dry brush or wash technique? you seem to be able to make a small figure look like a large one.
Also I have this image in my mind...you know the iconic image of the American Soldiers lifting the flag at Iwo Jema, I bet you could make a kick-ass dio of that, but with Imperial or Rebel Troops ( if you've not already done it).
To say I am impressed with your work is an understatement.

Another work of art from Ron Hembling! I am really blown away by the simplistic beauty of this piece. As Jules said when viewing your creations there is no sense of scale, are they 4" tall or 12"? It is really hard to tell unless you read the part about pittying the joints. The weathering with the pastels is off the awesome chart!

wraithnine, hangarbay94 , Clonemaster, FialaFernbrugg & Luke Sprywalker - Guys always a pleasure hearing your thoughts on my work and all comments are very much appreciated. And Jules I actually did a commission piece a few years back with Rebels on top of a roof lifting a Rebel Flag I might actually do one with Imperial troops.
Jules as for the weathering technic I do is below.
For weathering armour I firstly superglue and putty up up the joints, once that is done I actually give the entire figure a wash of matt black and then let dry. Once dry I then lightly rub away any excess paint I then dry brush the armour with a matt white making sure not to cover the seams etc.
When the white is dry I then start adding the details such as the jumpsuit, eyes etc I then use paint to add a little dirt on body. I don't actually start using pastels till the end once the dio is complete, this way you can keep the weathering consistent and it won't look weird with two different types of weathering.
You can also use this technic when doing clothing plastic/cloth you just have to be a little less subtle.

Ron, I love the troopers but that dio is truly a piece of art! You are the owner of a modeler's heart who understands that anything can be used as a building material.

Ron, I am SO behind on this! Holy crap is that Sandtrooper Dio freakin' AWESOME!!! Seriously, the detail is amazing in ways I can't even describe. I'd love to see a step by step tutorial one day on how you do some of these. Not that I think I could ever possibly come close to your expertise, but I'd sure like to give it Hell!

yeah we had rememberance day here ,the whole country just stops at 11 a.m(people stand in the street and shops with their heads bowed ,stores turn their lights off and cease trading for 2 minutes) . to observe the 2 minutes silence ,all british forces in the world(except those in combat operations ) wherever they are observe the silence ,many people wear the Poppy as a symbol of Remembrance ,there will also be a service of rememberance at the Cenotaph in London on sunday(Known as rememberance sunday) and there will be another silence held . but the first silence is always held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (the official end of the 1st World War ,"The Great War").

my great grandfather was killed on day one of the battle of the Some with 60,000 of his comrades in arms ,mown down like grass by German machine gunners .

Ron, your latest 2 pieces that I've yet to comment on are staggering. Your dios are always of the highest quality, and I suppose that the only reason that Sideshow (or some of the other upper end collectible companies) hasn't offered you the mega-fortune that you're worth, is that their own artisans work would pale in comparison to your own brilliant masterpieces.
I'm always floored by your work, and I'm thankful that I live in the same era as you. If my eyes could talk, they would thank me endlessly for giving them the pleasure of seeing your customs and dios.

Update: Now on our front page. Ron, I think this looks great already, but I wonder what it would look like if that one snowtrooper was going to check out an At-At driver instead of an At-St driver?
I have always wondered what the At-St driver in the Battle of Hoth looked like. I always just assumed they looked like that At-At Drivers, but perhaps I am wrong. I would love to know the canon thought on this and what you think.

Hey Ron. Will you be reworking the handrail into a more screen- acurate version? The new Hasbro at-st is realy sweet(and I know why they made the railing that way) but man a quick fix and it would sing.

Tamer - Thanks buddy and you know I was thinking the same thing and you have made my mind up, a AT-AT driver it shall be. Plus I think that the AT-AT style uniforms look better for snow dio's anyway.
hangarbay94 - Thanks bro and yeah I must admit I'm a little anal when it comes to my work bench. There is an old saying (A PLACE FOR EVERYTING AND EVERYTHING IN IT'S PLACE ) and I have to say it works.

I'm guessing that the bottom of an atst foot would look like a waffle iron, Ron.

I would think it looks similar to an ATATs foot, solid but with a "pad" sensor...

Never seen an official version or any pertaining artwork to go with it but Spookymufu has it right. Seeing how the ESB at-st wasnt a standard scout walker anyway. So I'd say something like this. (done in about 2 minutes in paint) (http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7987/foot1.th.png) (http://img215.imageshack.us/i/foot1.png/) Some segmented "shock" pads, a center cap over the terrain sonar sensor with various small stuff to break up the outline. Remember that this particular part is pretty heavy duty- not just because of wear and tear but also the ocasional small antipersonnel mine.
This thing will be sweet with some "long tube" chin guns and some more pluming on the chassis. You can fake the esb at-st pretty well. (now faking the slope of the top of the head would be more difficult)

Well started on the AT-ST Hoth/Snow Diorama so hopefuuly all goes well I'll have it done within 2 weeks.
Ok I'll be labelling the pics in order as you gathered by the pics already this way it will save on time and confusion.
Pic 1 - I removed the rails from the top of the AT-ST using a sharp model knife. I cut them completely off and then lighly sanded any excess.
Pic 2, 3 & 4- I filled in the opened seems using a model clay that sculptors use, as you can see from the pics the front, top and back were done. More pics soon.

Now that I think of it....if you have either of the Force Unleashed games; Im pretty sure the "footpad" is visable at some point(after you bring it down of course). Possibly the only canon interpretation out there.
I just thought of something else.
A possible expansion of your swamp patrol dio - I was wondering how cool it would be to also see a at-st(perhaps modified for the particular terrain) slogging through the mud and muck along with that patrol...but one has to wonder how a walker would fare in such conditions - plus you would have raise the "ceiling" of the diorama as well.......

Road Warrior - Cheers mate, and I don't have any of the Force Unleashed games but I can hire them so I might do that.
As for a AT-ST I don't think it would be to hard to do as I'm only guessing here but one would think they would have scanners etc to plot there goings and comings. I was just thinking that having a AT-ST sludging thru a swamp with one leg coming out of the sludge with the sludge running off it.
Now I think I'll have to make it damn you ;D

IIRC, the ATST runs on a computer controlled Gyro system that helps it maintain it's balance and has many sensors in the foot pad to judge it's traction and ground control, but also requires "highly skilled" pilots.....
Also I think it has 2 battery cells that dont last very long and needs to be re-charged fairly often......I'd have to re-read incredible cross sections to be sure

Again nothing to major guys/gals more larger dios will be coming.
I have a number of Sandtroopers that I'm doing for a diorama and have a few left over which I have and will be doing small dio's for, this first one depicts a Sandtrooper Squad Leader in an area in MOS ESPA.
The building section depicts a typical structure that you would find on Tatooine. The only real difference is that I decided that I would make the walls a little more of a yellowish colour due to the different texture and colour if sand that you would find in different parts of a planet.
As always once I got the look and feel I wanted for both the figure and diorama they were painted and weathered using Vallejo and GW paints and weathered using Vallejo paints and pastels.
RECIPE
Sandtrooper - The Sandtrooper is from the Hasbro Vintage 2010 line and was given a pauldron from a VOTC Sandtrooper, I left the articulation alone on this figure as I will be only supergluing and putting the joints up on figures on my larger dios.
I added thin leather straps to the pauldron and MP40 mag pouch. I cut the old MP40 mag pouch that was attached to the VOTC pauldron and added a new MP40 pouch from a WW2 1/18 Forces of Valor German figure.
The Base - the base is from a two dollar shop, the walls of the buiding are pieces of foam glued together and then a mix of plaster and woodglue was applied over the top of it. The pipes and bits and pieces on the walls are old pieces from an old Star Trek kit, 1/35 parts and two straws from the pits box.

Besides jungle dios Tatooine /desert dios would have to be my favs I just like the gritty dirty look that you can achieve plus there are Sandtroopers and I love Sandtroopers ;D
The Hoth dio is coming along but slowly as I have been doing a few more Indy 1/6 customs sorry buddy I will get back to it soon.

Cheers mate I really have been really enjoying painting up the Sandies and leaving the joints unglued. As you and the guys know the details on the newer SW figures is amazing and it's great to see that detail enhanced with some painting.
The Hoth dio is on hold for a few weeks more as I have some new 1/6 non SW and non Indy projects coming in the way of 40k Marines and even a 1/6 Batman.

RECIPE
Troopers - All the troopers are from Hasbro and are a mix of Storm and Sandtroopers. I had no regards when I was chopping these guys up I just wanted them to look like they have been attacked and chewed on by all types of humans and creatures.
The joints have been superglued and puttied up, the flesh is a mix of plastacine mixed with superglue and then thrown all over the place lihe were torn aprt.
Base - The base is a 1/6 Sideshow SW base with plaster added and then fine sand over the top of that. Once the base and figure were made they were painted using Vallejo, GW paints and weathered with Vallejo and pastels.

How do you get the dust to stick to the figure? It seems softer plastic is easier for it to stick to vs, some harder plastic like an astromech. I had to wet the droid a bit then dust. Any advice?

As for the dust sticking just spary a little dullcoate on the droid/figure etc and then add the pastels and then respray it with dull coate again to seal the pastals.

You really have excelled again, the subtle dusting on the droid is a case of perfect weathering technique and the whole scene looks totally authentic.

Well finally got to a little customizing this week it's nothing to much so enjoy.
Recipe
Dewback and Sandtrooper - Are from the new set, the Sandy has just had a repaint and I left the articulation so he and be used off and on the Dewback.
The Dewback has had it's joints superglued and sealed using polymer clay. The harness has been removed and replaced with a leather one the only parts I used was the saddle, large rolls and the plastic mouth grips.
The reins have had metal O-rings added and leather used, I used 1/6 buckles to complete the harness. The extra gear is parts from some WW2 German and American equipement, I decided to give the blaster it's own holster like I did with my 1/6 version and also added a holster for the prode stick as well.
Base - Was one I used for a 1/6 WW2 German dio I did awhile ago, I dropped it while I was cleaning a decided to use it for this. The Dewback can come off so it can be moved around.

With work being slow before I head off I was stoked that I was able to at least complete one more SW dio/custom before I go. It wasn't hard to decide what type of dio to do as you all know how much I love Sandtroopers so enjoy.
While on a routine patrol two Sandtroopers and their Probe Droid come under attack by Dune Raiders. The attack was quick and precise taking down one of the Troopers and the droid in seconds, the remaining Trooper takes cover behind the downed droid and starts firing back and he quickly realizes that he is now PINNED DOWNED.
RECIPE
Sandtroopers - Are from the newer Hasbro figures with the ball jointed leg, the legs were cut off and repositioned as the ball joint section makes it much easier to position the legs and give them a more realistic look.
The dead Trooper has had a small hole drilled into him and mix of matt black and hull red was painted around the hole and then some torn cotton wool was used to simulate the smoulder.
The arms, hands, head and mid sections were repositioned to get the posture I wanted then the joints were superglued and then puttied up. Once the putty was dried the figures were and equipment were painted and weathered using Vallejo, GW paints and chalk pastels.
Base - Is a picture frame I picked up from a two dollar store, the sand is a mixer of plaster of paris, PVA glue and fine river sand. It is mixed in together then paint is then poured into the mixer and saves time on painting afterwards.
The moisture evaporator and probe droid are both from Hasbro and have been painted and weathered using Vallejo, GW paints and chalk pastels. The probe droid was given two blast holes and this was done the same way as the dead Trooper.

I actually made some new display shelving and of course moved that great gunner you made me to be the highlight of it all. I still am tickled I got that off of you and thank you again. Tamer - I'm still stoked that you like the AT-AT Gunner/dio mate I totally love it when guys/gals like yourself get a custom from me and they enjoy them like you do. You'll have to post pics of your new shelving with all youe SW stuff.
I'll be more then happy to do another podcast I ahd a ball on the last one. We do get busy but we also have alot of down time as well that's why I decided to do some customs while I'm here, teh only problem we do have is that the internet isn't that great so when it does have great speeds we jump at the chance to get on.
Spry - I must admit I was getting the shakes not doing any custom figures or dios but when the down time started I jumped at the chance to get materials sent over and also buy stuff from amazon. I jsut took some pics of the two SW dios I have completed over the last few weeks so I'll get them up very soon.

Well as promised here is the first dio I did while in wonderful Kandahar and sorry if the pics are a liitle off I took them inside, even thou it is sunny here the dust is everywhere.
This one is just some sandtroopers doing a patrol over some rocky terrian.
Sandtroopers - Are from Hasbro and as usual put in a pose I like then the joints are superglued together then puttied up.
Base - The base is an old 1/6 indy stand and the rocks are from the tonnes of rocks we have around here on camp, I picked out what I liked then gave them a good wasg to get rid of the dust and then repinted them the reddish/brown colour as they were a dark grey. The sand is from our volleyball court and was glued in place and then painted the desired colour.
The little shrubs are from a company called Army Painter they come in a small container and are stuck to a thin plastic type film and you just take off what you want and adhere it to the area's you want. I painted, weathered and dry brushed the dio and figures using Vallejo and GW paints.

Well finally back for R+R and just getting over the jet lag, I very much appreciate all the comments regarding the last lot of dio's thanks heaps guys. I wasn't able to bring the latest dios home with me to take my usual outdoor pics but I only have a few months and then I'm back for good fingers crossed.
It doesn't look like I will get a chance to do any customizing while I'm R+R as the wife has booked me solid for things to do around the house ::) and here I thought I was on holidays LOL. And I'll be talking the family to the coast for a few days before I head back but I do have plans to do some customs over there.
mando assasin - I get alot of people tell me they can't belive I cut and hack up figures just to get hald a body to put on a dio. But I see it this way it's not half a figure that I'm cutting up it's a full dio I'm putting around it that is the hard part ;D.

Hi All
I got myself a 1/6 Sandy the other day and found out the wife also is getting me one for fathers day so I decided to make a display for them. The dio is being made using high density foam, I have also got myself som PVC piping from the hardware shop and will start adding more bits and pieces as I go.
I'm putting a stall/market in on the right handside of the dio and with all teh bit and pieces I have I will be having it an amoury/weapons stall/market. So enjoy and I will keep you updated.

Here are a few WIP of the 1/6 Mos Eisley/Mos Espa Tatooine dio. I have done the usual mix of plaster of paris and woodglue for the walls, I also moved around the pipes to suit the look of the dio better.
I have made a stall/market table from using balsa wood and model boat string, I'm still up in the air as to having a table in that area or just make cargo boxes etc which can be moved around.
If I keep the table it will be inplace for good the long string attachements will be secured to the wall so the table will be supported by the string and the two leg supports, I have added pics of what the table can look like with items on it (what do you guys suggest).

Here are some pics of the wall painting procedure, I have done some experimenting using clothes dye as a undercoat for the walls. I have found using dye is a cheaper way of doing the walls as I don't use alot of model paint.
I have used a dark brown dye over the plaster and watered the dye down just enough so that it won't be to dark. Also as you can see I had to chop of about 3-4 inches of the base on the right handside.

Here is the fourth wash it is was done using Vallejo's Brown Sand number 876, as you can see from the pics it tones down the yellowish tinge that the Snakebite leather wash does but still leaves a little of it on the surface. Next up once the wash dries will be the drybrushing.

The drybrushing is complete and as you can see by the pics the drybrushing has toned down the darker washes but still leaving enough to show the different depths of the walls. I'll be getting stuck into the pipes over the next two days and will show WIP for them soon.

I have started on the rusting/rusted pipes, the pipes are plumbers pipes and connections I picked up from the local hardware shop the two pipes on the left hand side had had two bottle caps superglued to them.
Pic 1 - The pipes have been given a black undercoat from Vallejo.
Pic 2 - They are then painted using Vallejo's gunmetal.
Pic 3 - Then they have been given a wash GW Vermin Brown and let to dry and then a mixture of Vallejo Hull Red and GW Blazing Oranage to start getting that reddish/oranage tinge that you see with rust.

Here is a little more update on the rust and I will have more WIP soon. Sorry it's taking longer then usual om this I'm in the middle of multiple projects at the moment.
Pic 1 - Here you can see the pastel chalks grounded down into powder form ready for applying. The colours I'm using are dark brown and light brown/orange. How I start the rust effect is get a pallet and drop a small amount of water onto it and then get some pastel chalk and sprinkle it over the water.
You want enough chalk added to the water to make it like a paste and then start dabbing over the area's you want. I started of with dark brown first.
Pic 2 - You can see the chalk added to the pipes and as you can see it becomes lighter which is ok as it lis ike when you play with mud it's dark when wet and lighter when dry.
Pic 3 & 4 - Once the chalk has completely dried get a dry large brush and brush over the area's were you applied the chalk. Don't worry if chalk does come off it adds to the effect of the rust.

Pic 1 - I then used the brown/orange chalk and followed the same steps as I did with the dark brown chalk.
Pic 2 & 3 - You can see the chalk starting to get a orange/reddish tinge to it. Once the chalk dried I used a brush to brush away any excess chalk. More WIP pics soon.

Cheers buddy and here is the completeion of the rust for the pipes.
Pic 1, 2 & 3 - the pipes were given a drybrush mix of Vallejo Gunmetal and Hull Red and then once dry I used the brown/orange pastel chalk and dapped it over the pipes. I then mixed Vallejo Gunmetal and GW Blazing Orange and then dapped that over the pastel chalk I previously applied.
That ends the pipes up next will be the weapons storage racks.

Spry & Mando - Cheers guys and again glad you are ejoying the tutorial.
I have another update after a few days of sitting back and placing weapons brackets and shelves all over the place and I came to the conclusion that having lost that extra 4 inches of space my amoury wasn't going to happen.
So looking at the dio I decided that I would make it into a back street warehouse sought of area.
Pic 1, 2 & 3 - I have added a shade cloth on the far right by using dowel and some left over cloth I picked up at the local craft shop. The cloth attached to the rod using PAV glue and while it was drying I used watered down cloth glue and covered the cloth with the cloth glue.
The watered down cloth glue was used to strengthen the cloth and also as it was drying it allowed me shape the cloth to have a natural sit. Once the glue completely dried I then gave the cloth a wash of dark sand and biege brown and I will let that dry then drybrush it to weather more.

Once I decided that the dio was going to be back street/warehouse type scene I thought to myself I need cargo containers, so after some hard thinking and throwing down a can of pepsi new (nectar of the gods) ;D and looking at the empty can I saw a cargo container before my very eyes.
Pic 1, 2, 3 & 4 - The cans (yes I needed more then one ;D) once empty were washed out so the left over pepsi wouldn't attract ants. I added some thin cardboard around the cans and some old GW paint jar lids for the lids of teh containers.
Once the cardboard and lids had dried I gave them an undercoat of gunmetal. When the undercoat had dried I then gave them three coats of matt black, I'm still deciding what the main colour of the containers is going to be so until teh next update enjoy the pics.

I'll add my fanboy-style "me too!" on the thanks for the great how-to's you've given us. Those cans do look dead right for inclusion! I'm tempted to say leave them black and throw on some aurabesh stencilling, some scuff-marks, and maybe some rust or other environmental "goo," and call it good!

Hey Ron, do you pre-mix the PVA woodglue and plaster of paris to prevent the foamcore from warping? This may not apply on your latest dio, but on at least one of your older productions it looks like you used 3/8" (or 9.5mm) foamcore for construction. Or maybe a better question, how do you keep your constructions from warping?
Someone on rebelscum advised pre-washing the foamcore with a 75/25 ratio of PVA to water mix to "seal it." I've never encountered this problem before now.

Joerhyno - Thanks mate and the cans will get the old weathering done to them once I decide waht colour I'm going to paint them.
XTS_Operative - I do pre-mix the plaster and glue before I apply it to any surface. I have never had any problems with the foamcore warping even when I srcibe lines into it to make the mix adhere even better.
The only thing I can think of that would be making the walls warp would be the mix is to watery. I always make my mix the same consistency of pancake mix, the only problem with adding woodglue to plaster is that it speeds up the drying process faster so you have to work fast with it.

XTS_Operative - mate no worries.
And I have completed the three containers and damn it was hard to decide how to paint them, so I went onto wikipedia and did a search for SW cargo containers and they had different colours and when I saw the blue I went with that.
Pic 1 - I painted the cans with Vallejo's Dark Blue 930.
Pic 2 - I then painted the top, bottom and middle with GW Mithril Silver.
Pic 3 - I then gave the cans a very light wash of Matt Black.
Pic 4 - Once the cans first wash was dry I made some prints on the computer and printed them off and stuck them on. Once the prints dried I then gave the cans a good going over using a wash of Matt black again.

Pic 1 - Once the wash dried I then pressed random areas of the cans to make them look damaged and yes droids don't like to look at caution signs ;D
Pic 2 - The cans were given a drybrush of GW Mithril Silver and Vallejo's Gunmetal Grey 70.863.
Pic 3 - Then cans were then given a drybrush of Vallejo's Beige Brown 875, GW Bestail Brown and then Vallejo's Drak Sand 70847 and once dry I used a mix of reddish brown and light brown pastel chalks.

Well I am 95% complete with the dio all I have to do now is add the sand and a little weathering and then it is done. As I mentioned in an earlier post I have added a new part to the dio which I should have done right at the start, so here is what I did.
Pic 1 - I cut out a section of the wall near the steps to make a door and added plasticard to the sides. The plasticard has small squres and looks like padding once painted, you can get this from any good hobby shop or online from evergreen.
I then patched up the gap between the wall and the padding with plaster of paris.
Pic 2 - The door was made using thin cardboard which I got from a cereal box and was strengthened at the back using balsa wood to stop it warpping when painted.
Pic 3 & 4 - Is what the door looks like almost complete, it was first painted using Vallejo's Black 70.950 and once dry was painted using Vallejo's Flat Brown 70984. Once the last coat is dry the door was then drybrushed using GW Mithril Silver and Vallejo's Gunmetal Grey 70.863.
The padding was given a wash of Vallejo's Black 70.950 and left to dry then it was drybrushed using Vallejo's Biege Brown 875 and Vallejo's White 70951.
The intercom was made using some thin cardboard for the back, I used a old paint lid for the monitor and a part of a Star trek 1/1000th nacelle for the mouth piece. the button between the monitor and mouth piece is from a 7" Artasylum Star Trek Enterprise scanner and the two pieces on the right hand side are again from Artasylum Star Trek Gorn figure.
The poster I got permission to use from bama287 over at www.fanpop.com I just printed it off and stuck it to the wall.

that is just too cool Ron, my only suggestion would be to have sanded down the brush strokes on the walls where you put the plaster on, or maybe used a sponge and did a stipple effect to get rid of the brush strokes, other then that, it looks great

Spookymufu - Hey mate, when I was over in the Ghan I saw some of the locals adding sand/mud to the side of a wall and they were using large brushes once it was applied and it looked really cool. This is were I got the idea for the walls but you are correct it does need to be sanded or sponged next time.

Hi All,
I haven't done a Star Wars dio for a while and while I was looking thru my parts box I came across Luke and Yoda and decided I would make the dio pictured.
RECIPE
Luke & Yoda - Both figures are the older OTC Dagobah Training figures and I used them straight out of the package as even now they are great looking figures. I superglued what joints they had and then covered them with putty, I painted them using Vallejo and GW paints and weathered them using Vallejo paints and pastels.
Base - Is an old Sideshow Star Wars base and I used modelling clay and plaster of Paris to build the ground work up. Once the plaster dried I then used dried up potty mix for the soil as this is perfect for swamp areas. When the potty mix had dried I used Woodland Sccenics realistic water and lightly covered the potty mix to give it a damp feel to it.
The tree is some roots I got from the front garden and the small skinner vines I picked up from the local florist, the small shrubs are from Army Painter and the small stones are from the garden.
The swamp water was done by adding a paint mixer of dark and light browns to get the desired colour and then that was mixed in with some Woodland Sccenics realistic water, the snakes are from Hasbro's Young Indy from TLC series.

I've had this sitting on the bench for a while now and between my 3-3/4" Centurions Power X-Treme build I'm doing I figured I would show you some WIP shots of the new AT-ST that I have been working on and will be used for my new Desert dio I'm doing.
As you can see I have used various 1/35, 1/72 parts and plasticard to to cover holes and add extra's, I also used 1/6 weapon parts to make new weapons. I have also been experimenting using plasticine to feel in gaps and joints and see so far it has been working out brillantly.
I have found especially that 90% of my work is diorama base/static and that they are for show only the plasticine works amazingly well once superglue is applied over the top. The plasticine doesn't split or crack and once the superglue has dried you can apply other materials to that without any problems.

How can I then make him look at the Ewok stuck between his toes if I glue the joint? Plus all the added weight of the stuff I'm planning to add will surely make it topple.

Thanks mate and it make sence. For your top heavy problem try adding weight into the bottom of the feet and then seal the bottom of the feet with plasticard. For the joints you could use small screws to tighten the joints or even some suerglue in the joints and move the joints around till the superglue dries this will tighten the joints without sticking them together.

Thanks buddy, I have started painting and weathering the ST so here are some quick pics. The ST was given a few coats of Tamiya's Light Grey and then a few washes of black were given over the base coat. Once that all dried I started doing washes of varies reds and browns to build up the weathering and the next step will be pastel chalks.

Hi All,
I went looking for some material for Lance's comp prize and came across a scheilch dinosaur and thought that it would be great for a 6" trooper to ride. Once I got home I put a trooper on it and decided to lengthen the head by about 1.5 inches using coat hanger wire.
Over the next few days I will start filling in the huge gap and start making the saddle, reins/bridle and dio.

Hi All,
I have puttied the gap in the neck using AVES fixit sculpt, I used a sculpting tool and tooth pick to do the scales and skin. I used the spikes from where the trooper will be sitting and placed them back onto the neck section.
The mouth on this dino could open and close so I superglued it closed and again puttied up the joints using AVES fixit sculpt.

but I don't like the lengthened neck of the dino. It looks way too front heavy. It doesn't look natural anymore and it makes me wonder how it balances that thing... my suggestion is to thicken or lengthen the tail as well...
but that's just my 2 cents.
I love the idea behind it, and I think that trooper looks amazing riding atop it! You did an amazing job filling in the gap and making it look seamless. Your sculpt work is phenomenal as always... It's just that lopsided look that throws me for a loop.
(It might just be the paleontologist in me that has studied way too many dinosaurs and their anatomy that's causing the problem! lol)

I took these pics about 2 weeks ago and just now have had a chance to post them.
Pic - 13, 14 & 15 - The creature's saddle was added by adding a piece of leather to the back of the creature and then adding a 1/6th Sandtrooper pauldron. The leather straps are pieces of leather cut to size and then glued into place.
Once the saddle had dried I then painted the creature with a leather brown and once that was dry I then gave it a very light wash of dark green.

Pic - 16, 17, 18 & 19 - The creature was then given numerous dry brushes of GW Skrag Brown for the base colour and once I was happy with the base coat the upper body was then dry brushed with GW Skakebite Leather and then it was toned down by a 50/50 mix of GW Snakebite Leather and Vallejo Flat White.
The under belly was given a drybrush of Vallejo Flat White then a wash of Vallejo Beige Brown, I then started dry brushing the under belly with a 60/40 mix of Vallejo Beige Brown and Flat white till I got the desired look.
The reins and nose ring were done by using different size O-rings and leather. For the bags underneath the rolls are from a Call of duty figure and the bags/cases at the front are from the 6" Boba Fett and 1/35 scale parts. The rolls were done using some cloth I picked at the craft store and then rolling them to different sizes and gluing them together.
They were then tied together using craft string and then painted Vallejo's Leather Brown and then dry brushed different shades of Vallejo Khaki. The Saddle and leather straps were painted again with Leather Brown then dry brushed different shades of GW Sankebite Leather, Skrag Brown and Vallejo Saddle Brown and Red Leather.

Hi All,
The planet Tillaran is on the outer rim borders and is a lush planet with thick rainforests which make it a haven for criminal activity as transports can not get thru the thick forests and rocky outcrops that populate the terrian. The only way to get thru this terrian are Tillaran Reptiles, these creatures are strong and fast and can manoeuvre thru the terrian with ease.
Imperial Stormtroopers use these creatures for this very reason and once tamed and controlled they make the ideal mount and are also very loyal to the one who rides them.
RECIPE
Stormtrooper & Tillaran Mount - The Stormtrooper is the Hasbro 6" Sandtrooper which has had the joints superglued and then lightly puttied and once the putty had dried I used tissue paper for the body suit, I also added the blaster and holster from the Han Solo figure and also two ammo pouches.
The Tillaran Mount is a Gigantosauras from Scheilch, I cut the head off and extended it about 2 inches to make it longer and then used AVES fixit sculpt to putty up the gap and used sculpting tools and tooth picks to make the scales. The Tail has had putty added to it to make it thicker so it didn't look like the creature was front heavy and a big thanks to spudafett from Imperial Shipyards for the advise on the tail.
The saddle was made using some strips of thin leather and a 1/6 Sideshow Sandtrooper Pauldron and the rolls are just pieces of cloth rolled up and tied using model ship string. The reins is a long piece of round leather with small O-rings attached at the ends and a larger O-ring for the nose.
Base - Is a few layers of oval bases from the craft store glued together and the high density foam was used for the rocks which were just pulled aprt using my fingers till I got the look I wanted. I then glued the mount to the base and also the rocks and once dry used a mix of plaster of paris and sand and covered the rockes and base.
Once the plaster/sand mix had dried I used a mix of real dirt and potty mix for the ground cover by gluing it over the plaster and once dry I gave it a wash of leather brown and left it dry. Once the was had dried I used some paper grass from a company called J's Work and attached them to the base and then used fishtank plants and small shrubs from Army Painter to complete the ground work, I then weatherd the base, rocks, Trooper and mount by using pastel chalks.

Hi All,
While on patrol Trooper RH1968 and his Recon Squad take are break after 4 hours trudging thru the forest floor on the planet Belhun. The planet use to be one of the main bases for the Rebels until Vader found it and destroyed it a few months after the destruction of first Death Star.
The Troopers deployed to this planet make constant patrols to insure that the Rebels or even smugglers don't set up of a base of operations. The Troopers wear modified armour as the normal Stormtrooper armour makes it harder to traverse the unlevel ground and vegetation.
RECIPE
Stormtrooper - The Trooper has the torso, lower legs, forearms, hands and shoulder aromour from the Hasbro Sandtrooper and the Helmet from the Hasbro Stormtooper and the new knee pad armour is from a 3-3/4" GI Joe figure, the upper arms and legs are from Hasbro's Han Solo figure. The joints were superglued and pinned and then I used putty to cover the joints and once the putty was dry I used tissue paper to cover the cloth areas to give it a more fabric look.
The weapon is modified from the barrel of the BlasTech DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle and the body of a BlasTech DLT-20A which both have been cut to the desired length and then pinned and superglued together.
Base - Is built up using high denisty foam and glued together and once dry cut to the desired shape, I used a broken piece of a tree branch and then cut out some of the foam so it would sit correctly on the base. I then used a mix of fine sand and plaster of paris and covered the base, once the snad and paris mixed was dry I painted the base with a mix of white PVA glue and Brown paint and once the base was covered I used potty mix and covered the base and then let it dry.
When the ground work had dried I removed any excess potty mix and glued the Trooper inplace and then started placing the plants inplace by drilling holes into the ground work and using super glue to keep them in place once they have been inserted in the holes. The larger plants are just plastic fishtank plants which were given a slight wash of different greens, the small grass like plants are from a company called J's Works which are printed paper plants and the smaller shrub type plants are from The Army Painter.

In a lot of Stormtrooper units they modify not just their armour but also their weapons to help them in battle. This Trooper depicts the 5th Assualt Group Battalion and he has modified a DLT - 34F Sentry Weapon and which has a extremely high rate of fire power.
RECIPE
Stormtrooper - The Trooper is a Hasbro 6" Stormtrooper and has been superglued at the joints once I got the pose that I wanted and then the joints were puttied up. The binoculars are from the Darth Maul 6" Hasbro Figure and the heavy weapon is from a Hasbro 12" Battle Droid with a few pieces of plasti card added the weapon.
The magazine backpack is from a Madelman astronaut figure and the ammuntion belt is from a 1/18th scale helicopter gunship, the strap was made is using piece of cloth elastic and some O-rings for the connections to the weapon.
Base - Is built up using high denisty foam and then a mix of plaster of paris, fine washed river sand and potty mix and then added to the base. Once dry the mixer was painted and then model railway grass was added. The bushes small clumps of grass from the garden and left to dry and then sprayed with dull coate and then painted and then they were inserted into the base.

Well I think you would rock that one out hands down. I am really enjoying your six inch work a lot. I think we are getting a TIE Pilot before too long in this scale, but think you could get a cool mix with a Luke Pilot helmet and the sandtrooper or stormy bucket.

Hi All,
While on patrol Trooper 605-T comes UNDER FIRE from Rebel Troops who have the advantage of being on high ground. 605-T runs for cover across a creek bed while returning fire hoping to make the tree line for cover before he gets hit.
RECIPE
Stormtrooper - The Trooper is a Hasbro 6" Stormtrooper body and a 6" Sandtrooper helmet, I decided to putty up the breathing apparatus and the vents to give the helmet a different style I also added a range finder using the top section of Boba Fett's and some thin plasticard.
I superglued the joints once I got the pose that I wanted and then the joints were puttied up and once the putty was dried I covered them with tissue paper. The karma is some left over leather from another action figure and glued into place, the bandoiler and pouches on his waist are from the Marvels Punisher figure.
The back of the troopers armour was covered with plasticard and then I used pieces from a Warhammer 4OK space marine and some 1/35 scale parts to build the back up.
Base - Is built up using high denisty foam and then I secured the Trooper into the base using superglue and a thin metal rod. A mixed plaster of paris and PVA glue and covered the base and once dry painted the base brown for the soil area and green for the water.
One the paint was dry I covered the soil area with potty mix mixed with some dirt and crunched up leaves and twigs and glued it onto the base. The splash were the left foot is hitting the water and the waves were done by using Woodland Scenics Water Effects and once dry I covered the water area with Woodland Scenics Realistic Water to give it more depth.
The small grass shrubs are from Army Painter and they were placed around the base to give it a realistic look and then the taller pieces of grass are from J's Work and placed on the base by drilling a holes and gluing them into place.

Very nice, Ron. Just enough mods to the trooper's outfit and the water effects look great. It's one of my favourite effects in dioramas, from subtle splashes like this, to a battleship surrounded by splashes of shells hitting the water. Still on my to do list as well. And it's such a long list ;D

I was wondering if you had any hints on how to tackle making a 'toxic' swamp like that, Ron. I was thinking about making a rough styrofoam base with half styrofoam balls glued on top. Cover that in a layer of smooth plaster and paint it up.

Cheers mate and that's not a bad idea I'll have to talk to Spry and see what we can come up with. As for the sculpts the only reall difference that I can see is the small vents on top of the Stormtrooper helmet as the Sandy helmet doesn't have them.

Hi All,
I went to the local toy shop last weekend and came across the new Hasbro SW Command Series figures, these figures for the price are actually very good and a cheap alternative to the bigger figures.
The figures stand roughly at 2.5 inches and for some reason remind of the old green plastic army men I use to have when I was a kid but the big difference here is the detail which is excellent.
So I decided to give them a quick paint up which for the three figures took me roughly 2 hrs which included the base so for a beginner painter or dioramist these are a great alternative.
RECIPE
Sandtrooper & R2 Unit - The Troopers and R2 are from Hasbro's new SW command series figures.
Base - Is a small plastic base I have had lying around and the sand was made using plaster of paris, PVA glue and fine sand.[/size]

Ok, I looked at em again. I wish there was more variety with the poses but if you were using em as placement markers for a gaming type situation, The set would be perfect to paint for just that. It can be nice and quick to make a little dio using these as has been shown nicely and imagine how the figures scale could relate to say..... A bmf falcon or...... A bmf walker.

Totally agree with you on all counts mate, if you want a quick little dio these are the way to go and I would you really like to see more variety as well. I think 3 different poses especially for the troops would be cool.

Spot on Clint. If you wanted a static display for not much money these would be the way to go.
That or start a diorama with these for not as much money to see if you would then want to say create it in three and three quarter scale.

I went to TRU the other day and to my surprise they had a few of the Hasbro Scout Trooper so I decided to pick one up so that I can do a dio with it. I started looking thru google to get some idea's and came across the poster below and decided to do a dio of just the trooper and speeder.

RECIPE
Scout trooper & Speeder - The Trooper and Speeder are from Hasbro, the trooper as been put into the pose a liked and then I superglued the joints and then puttied them up. The blaster rifle is from Hasbro's 6" Sandtrooper and the sling is from NECA's 7" POTA Gorilla's rifle. The speeder is straight out of the box except for the small controls which were cut don so that they were level with the rest of the speeder console.
Base - Is a few cheap craft boards glued together and the tree and fallen tree I got from the back yard garden and nailed them to the boards. The ground was built up using plaster cloth and once dry it was painted brown and then a mixer of dirt and potty mix was glued over the base.

Really glad you like it buddy thank you. And when I want to build a dio for example this one I will either picture how I want it or use the poster or pics for reference. Once I know how I am going to do it I will find the materials such as the branch and then get all the pieces together and look at it from all sides and look at height depth etc.
Another good way and I do this alot is get a mirror and look at the dio layout thru the mirror and this will give you a better perspective then just looking at the dio layout. Also for the rocks I go outside a look around and see how they sit in and on the ground and this will also help give you a natural feel to your dio.

Here is another 6" WIP dio I'm doing that will have Luke and R2 looking for a good place to set up base camp after they ditched the X-wing on Dagobah. At the back there will the swamp and to the right there will be a large swamp tree.

Hi All,
Another update on the Dagobah Dio.
I wanted to use a palm tree root like the one I used on my 3-3/4" Luke and Yoda dio but it was to short so I used a branches from a old tree I had in the recycle compost bag.
I cut what branches off I wanted and then pinned and then superglued the smaller ones to the trunk, I then used high density foam to build up the ground work then used plaster cloth to cover the foam and build up the ground work.
Were I attached the smaller branches I used plaster cloth to cover up the gaps then let it dry a little and with a piece of bark pushed that into the plaster cloth. Once it all dried I then used a mixer of plaster and PVA to and lightly covered over the bark this will help with the bark from peeling off or cracking.
I also used plaster cloth to cover the rest of the ground work and just pushed teh plaster cloth around till I got the desired look.

More updates,
Pic 1 - I have added another light mix to the tree and given the base a quick paint job to see how the ground work will look around the base of the tree.
Pic 2 - The tree was given a heavy wash of Matt Black and then left for about 2 hours to dry.
Pic 3 - The tree was then given a wash of Burnt Umber and left to dry and then a second wash of Burnt Umber was applied.

Pic 4 - The tree was then given a wash of Burnt Unber and Light Brown.
Pic 5 - The tree was given a very very light drybrush of Beige brown.
Pic 6 - The tree was then given a wash in different areas to simulate moss/slime.
next up will be the thicker moss/slime.

Pic 7, 8 & 9- Ground work has been done by mixing dried garden dirt, potty mix and ground up leaves together and then covering the base with PVA glue and then the ground mixer was added and then let dry for at least 2 hours for the ground mixer to adhere correctly.
The moss was done by mixing static grass and model railway bush clumps with some green paint and then attaching it to the tree and leave to dry. Once this mixer has dried get some cotton ball and soak in the same green paint you used before and once soaked tear it apart and then start attaching it over the static grass and bush clump mixer you attached earlier.
Pic 10 - Once everything has dried the ground work was then given a wash of Black Brown and then let this dry for about and hour.
next up applying extra shrubs and water.

Last update for the night.
Pic 11 - Where the water edge is I have used Woodland Scenics Water Effects to make a barrier for when I use Woodland Scenics Realistic Water. The Water Effects once dry will be clear and blend in very realistic with the Realistic Water.
Pic 12 & 13 - I have added small clumps of plant life using Army Painters Wilderness Tufts, for those that haven't seen these they are tufts/clumps of grass that you peel off and they are very sticky underneath. Once you decide where you want the tufts/clumps you can just stick hem onto your base but I like to add a little super glue to make sure they do not come off.
Next up will be filling in the water and making it murky.

Hi All,
Another update.
Pic 14 - The water affects has nearly dried clear ready for the water to be poured.
Pic 15 - Woodland Scenics Realistic Water was mixed with some green paint and a very small amount brown paint. Once poured I added model railway shrubs which were broken up and mixed in with the water.
Pic 16 - The mixer has dried over night and doesn't look very nice but this is the effect you want. And don't worry about the edge looking white it just absorbed some of the Realistic Water and will eventually dry.

Pic 17 - The second layer of Realistic Water was poured this morning and as you can see it looks white but don't worry it will dry clear.
Pic 18 - The Realistic Water has dried and given a great water affect this will dry a little more and another light coat might be needed.
Next up - Painting and weathering R2.

R2D2 update.
Pic 19 - I first superglued all R2's joints and the removed the little taps from the two forward door hatches and teh top of his head. Once they were removed I sanded the factory seems with fine sandpaper.
Pic 20 - He was then given a wash of matt black and that was left on for about 30 secs and then the excess was lightly wiped away using a tissue.
Pic 21 - Here he is with the matt black wash wiped away and as you can see the grooves and lines have been semi filled which will be fixed.
Pic 22 - Using a lead pencil get some fine sandpaper and make the pencil tip very sharp and don't throw the excess as you will need it. Once the pencil is sharp go around the grooves and lines and this will make them stand out better and give you a more natural look. With the excess get a drybush paint brush and push it into the excess lead and brush it over the figure.

Pic 23 - Once I have done the lead brushing I started painting the blue and silver areas and and whatever other areas need painting like the eye and lights then. I let it dry and then went over it again with the lead drybrush.
Pic 24 - The figure was then given a thicker drybrush of black brown to give it a dirt look.
Pic 25 - The mud was done by using the same dirt I used for the Dagobah base, it was lightly watered down and a small amout of PVA glue was also mixed in so it would bond together and adhere to the figure. The mud looks wet now but will dry but it will be given a wet look once the whole dio is together.
Next up Dagobah Luke.

I have used bare arms from the Buffy line of figures for a TOD Indy I did once so I think they will great for a training Luke .

Hi All,
Last WIP tutorial and then the usual outside pics later on today and I have to apologise for the grainy pics my good camera battery went flat and I used a older camera.
Pic 26 - I firstly sanded all the mold seems then I superglued all the joints and the used AVES Fixit Scuplt to cover all the joints.
Pic 27 - I used tissue paper and covered the body, this when paintd will give the outfit a really nice fabric look to it.
Pic 28 - Once the tissue paper was dry I painted the uniform Medium Grey.
Pic 29 - I then gave it a light wash of matt black.

Pic 30 - I then dry brushed the uniform using Medium Grey and the a 50/50 of Medium Grey and Flat White and then once dry a very light drybrush of Khaki
Pic 31 - The boots were painted Dark Brown then drybrushed Beige Brown and the a very very light drybrush of 50/50 mix Beige Brown and Flat White.
Pic 32 - The Skin was painted using Flat Flesh.
Pic 33 - Then once the Flesh has dried for a good 1 hour I then used Burnt Sienna and gave the skin a light wash and then wiped away the excess with a tissue.

Pic 34 - I then painted the eyes with a 50/50 mix Flat White and German Grey. I then lightly paint in the pupils using a Dark Blue the a Light Blue. I then give the eyes a light wash of light grey.
NOTE - Don't worry if the eyes look like he is nearly blind once the dull coate goes on and then the gloss for the moisture they will good.
Pic 35 - The hair and eyebrows were painted using Dark Brown.
Pic 36 - The hair was then given a wash of Beige Brown and then once dry it was given a drybrush of Beige Brown then a light drybrush of Dark Sand.
Pic 37 - The Holster was painted using Drak Brown and the it was drybrushed using Saddle Brown, Leather Brown and then Sankebite Leather. The buckles, clips etc were painted Matt Black and the were painted using Mithril Silver.
The Blaster was painted Matt Black and the drybrushed using Gunmetal and the muzzle was drybrushed Mithril Silver. The hand grips were painted Dark Brown and then Drybrushed with Beige Brown.
The Light Saber was painted Matt Black then painted Mithril Silver then given a wash of Matt Black and then Drybrushed with Mithril Silver. I removed the plastic clip attachment and replaced it with a thin metal O-ring.

I have learned quite a bit, and your work has been very inspirational . now while i am still pretty new to the customizing world and haven't worked on a bigger scale like you, i find myself wanting to try dio's and work with larger scale figures only problem is i would need a second job lol ! Hi All,
I decided to start on a third project and this time it's another AT-AT Gunner but this time in 6" this is going to be different from the 3-3/4" & 12" ones I have done as he is not going to be in snow out.
This small cross section dio will depict the gunner on the ready with a few Stormtroopers ready to deploy.

The cloth I used is just too stiff. Same for mine's kama. Sad thing is the scuba clones were one of my favorite inventions of the prequels, why didn't I think of this! Dang... now I want to do a scuba scout too. Thanks heaps Devin and for the face wrap and kama (thanks mate couldn't think of the name) I picked up some fabric from the local craft shop and cut to size. Once I had the size I wanted for both the face wrap and kama I used material glue and went along the edges and folded it over and left it to dry.
Once dry I the kama was easy I just lefted up the belt and side pouches and superglued them inplace. The face wrap I wanted to go for a snowtrooper feel and I started off by starting at the front of the helmet gluing as I went and doing a small area one side then going to the next till I got to the back and then glued the two halves together.
As for the aqua scout I made a 3-3/4" one years ago and as soon as I got my hands on the scouts I knew one of them was going to become the aqua trooper.

I wondered if anyone cottoned on regarding the comment nice pick up mate. As for the two helmets you need to trim the ear pieces off the troopers helemt and sand down the black line above the eyes and the x-wing helmet slid on perfectly.
The flippers, tubing and tanks came from a 6" figure called Madelman you can type it into ebay and you will find them.

This is my problem with the 6inch line. I can't bring myself to mix-n-match any of them yet because I can't afford to purchase so many at once! Not only that but I can't find half of them! I didn't even realize there was a rebel pilot's helmet for the pilot luke...

That is correct 3 different figures Luke x-wing body/upper arms/ upper legs and knees and helmet, Stormtrooper Helmet/forearms /hands and Scout Trooper boots.

Totally agree with you on the pricing of a figure when one figure has more and the other less or nothing how can they justify the same price.
The elbows will be glued soon but I just cut the connection rod that holds them arms and elbows together and then trimmed down the luke connection so it could slide into the troopers elbow.

Hi All,
I wanted to do something different for the Scout Trooper and when I saw HALCION's & spudafett's Snow Scout versions I knew that was the way to go, and thanks for the inspiration guys.
RECIPE
Scout trooper & Speeder - The Trooper and Speeder are from Hasbro. I started on the speeder first and pulled of the rolled cloth at the back and replaced it with a heater generator for when the Scout is riding. The heater generator was done buy using a 3-3/4" Sandtrooper back pack a 12" WW2 German torch and a tube from a 6" figure.
The rifle rack was done by using two hand knives from two 3-3/4" TOD Thuggie Guards and I cut the knife sections off and glued them inplace. I also cut the control panel out and trimmed it down so it would have sit a lot more even on the panel instead of sitting to high up.
The rifle is from the Hasbro Stormtooper and has had strips of cloth wrapped around it so when so it can blend in with the snowy landscape.
The Scout has had a cloth Kama and face cover made out of cloth material cut to size then the were glued into place. The tube from is back and goes under his face cover is from a 6" Madelman Scuba diver and the small circular connection which is for the heater generator tube was done by cutting a thin piece of plasticard and gluing inplace.
The small motion sensor was a 3-3/4" Snow trooper back pack and I cut of a few buttons and repainted a small sreen with some reading on it and the antenna's are thin pieces of plasticard cut to size and then small holes drilled into the back pack and then the antenna's were glued inplace.
Base - is built up using foam core sheets and plaster cloth was used to get a uneven ground cover. Once dry a mixer of 45/45/10 of PVA glue 45% and Army Painter snow flakes 45% and water 10% were mixed together and I then started to spread it over the base. Once the snow was dry I sprayed the whole diorama with Matt Varnish and then used Woodland Scenics Realistic water and gave the snow a very light covering to inhence the snowy look to it.

That they do mate as soon as I saw the back pack I knew it was going to work and the snowtrooper back pack was a accident, I dropped it on the floor looking for something to use and when I picked it up and thought damn that would work.

Hey mate and yes it holds up extremely well actually. I super glue the foam together and let it dry for about an hour before I start work on it and once it has dried it's doesn't bend or warp.

Hi All,
I built a 3-3/4" Aqua Trooper way back in 2007 and decided to build another Aqua Trooper but this time in 6" scale.
RECIPE
Aqua Trooper - is a Hasbro Black Series figure and is just the scout redone by putting him in a pose I liked and then super gluing the joints and then Iputtied up the joints, once the putty had dried I the covered the cloth areas in tissue paper. I then added flippers/air tanks and hoses from a 6" Madelman Scuba Diver.
The small connection struts that are on the back which are 1/35 scale pieces I had in my bits box, the weapon is a combo of the butt and midsection of one of the Sandtrooper rifles and the barrel from the Stormtooper rifle.
Base - is built up using foam core and then using pieces of high density foam they were then pulled apart to get a desired look and then glued to the base. Once the foam rocks were glued I then used plaster cloth and covered the whole base and including the foam rocks.
Once the plaster cloth had dried I then used a mix of 45% - plaster of paris and 45% PVA glue and 10% water and mixed the lot together and then applied it to the base and rocks. I let the mix dry for about 10 minutes then used an old paint brush and very lightly dabbed it over the drying plaster that was covering the rock to give it a more stone effect.
The small coral and seaweed are from a bag of plastic plants that I got from the pet shop and they were cut to size and painted and then given light washes. Once the coral and seaweed were dry I placed them on the base and glued them into place using superglue, I then used washed river sand and covered the base in PVA glue and then added the sand.
Once the sand was dry I gave it a wash of Dark sand then let dry and then a wash of Iraqui sand, the shells were given to me by my daughter and with the larger shell I added tentacles by using some snake tails that I cut off when I built a Indiana Jones Well of souls diorama I did in 2013 and yes I keep everything LOL as you never know when it is going to come in handy.

Hi All,
I was doing another scout and speeder dio but decided to put it aside when I was looking at the Mytho Obi Wan and I realy liked the oufit and decided to do a dio in that style.
This dio will be about 10-12 yrs after ROTS and will depict Obi Wan just after he has taken out a unit of sandtroopers as they were getting to close to the LARS Homestead.
So far I have used the 6" Obi Wan and have posed him and glued his joints together and he will be holding his saber which will have the to have the blade in or out. The robes are done by using left over material I had in my part box .
The base is built up using high denisty foam and will be made into a small rocky/sand outcrop and will have a trooper helmet and blaster as well.

Hi All,
This small diorama depicts Kenobi about 10-12 years after the fall of the Jedi. Kenobi has just taken out a small squad of sandtroopers who were nosing around to close to the lars's homestead.
RECIPE
Kenobi - is a Hasbro 6" Black Series figure and has been put into a pose I liked then his joints were superglued and then puttied over. I then used tissue paper to cover the body and legs, I then used some old material I had and made the robe by cutting out a design then gluing it in place with cloth glue.
Base - is built up using high density foam as are the rocks. Once I got the look I liked I then covered the base with plaster and let it start to dry then I lighty pushed the helmet/ammo pouch and blaster into the plaster and then poured fine sand over the base.
Once the plaster/sand was dry I then made the severed neck section in the sandtroopers helmet by using AVES Fixit sculpt. Once the severed neck was dry I then painted and weathered the whole base and figure using Vallejo, GW paints and pastels.

Hi All,
Well I started on a probebot and thanks to HALCION for the inspiration when I saw his probebot I knew I had to give one a twirl (cheers mate). This is going to be for a large Sandtrooper dio I'm doing and still needs some wires and parts added.
This was made using an old webcam camera, toothpick lid, lego parts, 1/6 scale parts, 1/35 scale parts, 1/72 scale parts, plastic tubing, plasti card sheets, Hasbro SW parts and Revoltech joints.

Well the probe droid is almost complete but this is it for the night, I have done the painting which is a base of German Grey then a wash of Matt black and then I dry brushed it Medium Grey. I have started the weathering by using Gun Metal and then Mithril Silver and then Red brown pastels.

Hi All,
When I saw HALCION's Probe Droid I knew that I had to give one a go and again thanks for the inspiration mate. The MK-V's were made 20yrs ago but are still used in harsher climate planets such as Tatooine as they are very tough and could adapt very quicly to almost any enviroment.

Probe Droid MK-V - is a mixer of an old webcam, tooth pick lid, revoltech joints, plasti card tube, plasti card strips, 1/6 scale parts,1/35 scale parts and 1/72 scale parts, Hasbro parts and Star Trek model parts.
Base - is a gaming base from GW and the sand is just a mixer of plaster of paris, fine sand and PVA glue. The rod is some left over plasti card tube I had in the bits box and has another piece of plasti card inserted in the centre for added strength.

Hi All,
Well I decided to start this dio before I head into surgery on Wednesday so the hard part is done as i won't be able to move around to much for the first few days (don't worry just getting my ankle done again 6th time lucky ;D)
Anyway the vaporator is 85% complete I just need to add a few more little pieces, the main body is done from plumbers materials and the bits and pieces on it so far are parts from 1/35 and 1/72 scale tanks, hasbro part and plasti card.
I decided to chiller bars are made from plasti rod and the tops are 1/35 sclae rockets.

Well best of luck with your surgery buddy! As for the dio, I am loving it! The use of the "slip fix" is just perfect for this scale and I hate to tell you this. I saved one from a job for this exact use. LOL! What glue did you use to attach the styrene to the PVC base? Can't wait to see you able to get back on this one!

Spry I was walking thru my local hardware store to try find something larger enough to make an escape pod and cam across the "slip fix" and when I saw them I went I know they can be good for, as they say mate great minds.
I just used ZAP A GAP superglue to adhere the styrene to the PVC had to clean the PVC first and then lightly sand where I wanted to glue the items.

Hi All,
Not much happening with the diorama tonight except that I was looking at it with the sandtrooper and wasn't to happy with the sandtrooper then I tried two and still wasn't happy with the way it looked.
So I decided that since I have already done a snow and forest speeder diorama's I would do a desert one now. As you can see by the dio I'll have the speeder next to the vaporator with the scout leaning against it taking a break.

Hi All,
After hearing rumours of an old hermet that had wizard like powers Vader heads to Tatooine to investigate this rumour as he belives that it might be a Jedi. After several days with no luck in finding this rumoured hermet he comes across a tribe of Tusken Raiders.
His hatered for Tusken Raiders for what they did to his mother leads Vader into a rage and he starts fighting the 100 plus Tuskens, the fight goes on for nearly 2 hours and Vader comes out of it the victor, he is alive but damaged.
RECIPE
Darth Vader - is from Hasbro's 6" Black Series line and he has had he's left forearm and lower leg cut off and then I added a forearm and lower leg of a NECA Terminator. The torn outfit was done using AVES Fixit sculpt as were the wounded flesh areas, I then superglued the joints and then used AVES to putty over the joints.
The battle to the uniform was done by using a model knife and the torn cape was done by using a model knife and a pair of scissors. Vader was painted and weathered using Vallejo and GW paints and pastel chalks.
Base - I picked up from a craft store and the rusted object is from a 1/72 Falcon kit and that was glued to the base and then I used a mixer of plaster of paris fine sand and PVA glue and covered the base and the I painted and weathered it using Vallejo and GW paints and pastel chalks.

Theres an illustrated book that has most of the vehicles drawn to show the inside of them many have a character to help show the size compassion. I do believe the escape pod is in it? Pretty sure with a bit of digging you can find it on google or model sites?

Hi All,
Started this little old Gonk/Power Droid today, he will be part of the 6" Tatooine dio that I will be doing. He is made from plasti card, 1/35 tanks parts, Star Trek 1/2500 parts, Hasbro 1/6 Pit Droid parts, 1/20 SF3D parts and some string. I have given him a few coats of rust and now I just have to apply the original paint and chip weather it.

Hi All,
The Gonk/Power droid is now complete. I gave him a dark blue paint application over the rust paint work I did yesterday and before it dried I got a lightly damp cloth and started rubbing off the blue paint.
Once the blue paint was dry I went over the edges again with gun metal and silver and the oil leaks with watered down matt black. I then went over the whole thing with pastel chalks again to bring out the rusted area's.

Hi All,
Have two WIP the first is a tread well droid. It has been made using teh lower half of a 1/72 German Tiger tank and then I used plasi card for the body and arms. The joints are from Revoltech and the attachments are from GI Joe figures, Terminator figures and some 1/72 scale tank parts and 1/6 scale parts.

Hi All,
I have restarted the AT-AT Gunner vignette dio and decided to make it a little smaller then the previous one.
The base is made from foam core and has had plasti card glued to it, I have also added a small red light to depict troops are ready to disembark.
The Gunner has the body and helmet of X-wing Luke, Boots from a Scout Trooper, Helmet, forearms, upper torso and shoulder armour from a Stormtrooper. The tubes are from the bits box and connections are pieces of plasti card and 1/35 and 1/72 tank parts.

Hi All,
I completed the AT-AT hull section using plasti card and lego parts and SWBS 6" parts, I also decided to add a small weapons rack just for fun. I have also started painting and weathering the partial AT-AT hull using Vallejo and paints. I have also made the extension arm using lego parts, plasti card tube, revoltech joints, 3-3/4" rubber tubes and wire.

Well the Gunner is almost done just have to added the safety harness but till then I just wanted to show some close ups of the helmet and shoulder armour detail.
The pictures are Games Workshop decals and have been attached then let dry and painted over and the rest of the helmet details have been hand painted.

Hi All,
Well onto another dio this time I'm doing a 6" 'look Sir, Droids', I did a 3-3/4" one way back in 2007 and couldn't resist doing in the 6" format. The escape pod is not going to movie accurate but will have a few simularities , I have started out using PVC plumbers pipes and connections and and the trooper is for scale. I will show more WIPpics as I go.

No problem. I found mine for a dollar at goodwill so i didnt know what it was from at the time until i went to Target and seen it in the tmnt section. Theres a water bike in that line that looks promising too

Hi ALL,
Did a little work today on the escape pod today. The main thrusters are small plumbers joints and the end of the main thrusters are old paint lids. The small control thrusters on top and bottom are done using 1/72 German tank wheels and small caps that you use on the end of rods etc. The rest of the greeblies have been done using plasti card and 1/35 models parts.

Were do you get the sand from? All the craft stores here have wierd colored sand or beach sand. I was thinking of going to a hardware store for the sandblaster sand but that would be too much sand.

I go to a hardware warehouse called Bunnings and they sell washed river sand in bags for roughly $30 aus each and that last me for months. Or you can go to a landscape store and they should have different types of sands.

I bought the tmnt bike and theres a problem it is the same mold but the tmnt bike is smaller than the one i got from goodwill its a good size but maybe a bit too small? I will do more research later tonight during my shift.

Ok so its a tmnt bike from 2006 called a stunt rider. More specific its raphs. How ever all four turtles have their own for more variety speeders i hope this helps you make an awesome speeder dio.

Hi All,
This scene depicts a Sergeant informing his Squad Leader of the direction one of the droids has gone and after they restock up on water the SEARCH FOR THE DROIDS will continue.
Recipe
Sandtroopers - are from Hasbro 6" Black Series, I put them into pose's I liked then super glued the joints and then used AVES sculpt to cover the joints over. Once the putty dried I then covered the body suit areas in tissue paper.
The RT-97C Heavy Blaster Rifle the Sergeant is holding was made using a DCT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle. I cut of the but section and then made the magazines using sme thrusters from an old Thunderbirds 2 model, I then used two scopes from the 6" Han Solo pistol and one scope from Luke X- wing pistol and then attached a piece of wire that I got fro the parts box.
Base - The base is built up using foam core board, The moisture vaporator is a mixer of plumbers connections and placti card and 1/72 and 1/35 model parts. The sand/rocks was done by mixing plaster of paris, sand and model railway stones all together and then adding it to the base.
Once the mix was done all the items were painted and weathered using Vallejo and GW paints and chalk pastels.

Hi All,
I did a 3-3/3" Fel back in 2006 and decided that I would redo him in 6" format. Also have a great xmas and a very happy new year.

Fel - is a Black Series 6" Tie pilot, I added shoulder armour from a Stormtroper and pistol and holster from Greedo and a few pouches from the parts box. I also added an extra tube from is chest computer to his thigh using which I got from the parts box, I super glued the joints and then puttied them and then covered the uniform in tissue paper.
Base - is built up using foam core and the power unit is some plumber connections I picked up at the local hardware shop and the pipes are some old computer cables. The crates are made from pieces of left over plasti card and the safety hazard marking was drawn on with a pencil and then hand painted.

Besides the one's that I have built I have 2 sandtroopers and 8 stormtroopers left, I do buy them on ebay when they are selling in lots from time to time but most of the time I trade figures for commission work as it benefits both myself and the customer.

I have started painting the pod and have given it a coat of matt black and then sprayed 3 coats with Medium Grey. Once dry I then gave it a good wash using matt black.

Hi All,
The pod is complete and all I have to do is get it put onto the dio.
The pod was given a drybrush of medium grey and then a very light wash of flat white. Once the wash dried I then gave it a very light wash of matt black and let dry.
I then started drybrushing matt black to the top and side to simulate re-entry scorching and also gave the main thrusters and manouvering thrusters a drybrush to simulate heat stress and then I weathered the pod using pastel chalks.

Hi All,
While I'm waiting on figures to arrive so I can finish dios and commissions I thought I would whack together a Snowtrooper together using parts from left over figures, I still have to fill in gaps and the joints and then paint him up and make a small base for him.
The Snowtrooper is a combo of a scout trooper's torso, legs and biceps and the chest, helmet, forearms and shoulder armour are from a Stormtrooper. The karma and face cover are some left over material I had in the parts box and the back pack is made up using plastic card and 1/35 and 1/72 tanks parts and the head plate armour on the helmet was done using thin plasti card

Hi All,
Finally done I have already given the recipe for the trooper and the base was done by using marine foam and then built up using plaster cloth and left to dry. Once dry I added plaster over the base let that dry and then painted it different shades of brown and then added the snow by using a mix of PVA glue and spakfilla .

My jaw hit the floor when I saw Barron Fel! The escape pod interpretation is beautiful and the moisture vaperator is very inspiring. Now we have a Snowtrooper that is to die for! Hi All,
Well I can't wait for the Bandai Sandtrooper to come out so I've decided to convert the Stormtrooper I put together today. The figure is Bandai and I removed the holster two white cartridges from the front and attached two Hasbro Sandtroopers ammo pouches to the side and will add a another one to the left shoulder.
The back pack is Hasbro's Sandtroopers and has been attached by removing some the plastic from the inside and also removing the detonator from the back of the trooper. The pauldron is again the Hasbro's Sandtrooper and has been super glued on.\, I also removed the ridges that are on the left knee and added a triangle knee section using plasti card.
I just have to paint and weather him up and make a small sand base using the Bandai base that comes with the figure and this figure will be fully articulated.

Hi All,
I have completed converting the Bandai Stormtrooper into a Sandtrooper and I am very happy with the end result.
As you know I used the Bandai Stormtrooper and used the Hasbro Sandtroopers backpack and ammo pouches. I gave him and the equipment a complete repaint and weathering using Vallejo paints and pastel chalks.
The base is the one that comes with the figure kit and I just covered it using plaster of paris and mixed sand into and then applied it to the base and then painted and weathered using Vallejo paints.

Hi All,
I got the Bandai Vader in the other day and as with the Stormtooper I was not disappointed. The kit has great detail and the build is very simple and as with the Stormtrooper the articulation is excellent.
Recipe
Vader - As mentioned is from Bandai and has been built straight out of the box except for the robes which were replaced with the Hasbro Vader. I also added a belt using leather and made a saber clip using wire and the saber has had a small clip added to it so it can be attached to the belt.
Vader was painted using Vallejo and GW paints and I used mister sheen which is a furniture polish to polish the helmet to give it a more gloss look.
Base - is from the kit and has been painted black and I painted the four small engraved sections that are in the corners white to simulate lights.

Sorry I haven't been around much these last few weeks work has been just crazy butfinally it's slowly down to a nice pace.
This dio is one of three commissions I'm doing for Tamer, this WIP dio will depict a Snow Scout relaxing next to his speeder but always on alert.
The figure and speeder are Hasbro I decided to try and duplicate the speeder I made a while ago which is almost the same except the paint apps which is now %90 complete on painting the speeder I just need to add a little more weathering.

Thanks mate and all I did was lift the up the bedroll with a small screwdriver then carefully cut the plastic that keeps it attached.

He's all completed the Trooper has had a little extra weathering done to his armour and cloth goods. The snow was given another layer to give it a more wet/reflected look to it by mixing Spakfilla and Woodland Scenics realistic water.

Hi All,
Here is some WIP pics of Shawns AT-AT as you can see I have used a Tie pilot for the base and shoulder pads from a scout trooper have added the greeblies using 1/6, 1/35 and 1/72 parts. The joints have been super glued and now cover the joints and tehn paint and put him on his dio.

Cheers mate and the two little tube items at the front of the helmet are from a 1/72 Geman Panther Tank and the two small parts above the eyes are two 1/72 German canteens cut in half.
The parts on the back are a 1/72 engine hatch from a German Panther tank and part of a 1/35 German radio. The yellow straps are from a 1/6 German Life preserver, the two cylinders on the back of the helmet are 1/35 German gas canisters.

Wow, what a neat trick to do with the jump suit. Love the canisters on the back too. Can't wait to see how this one finishes up. That dark face doesn't let me see the tusks where the old TIE hose assembly connected to the front of the helmet, but I know that is gonna be killer too. Off to share.

That tissue technique is an old model builders trick used to emulate cloth or canvas. You can work folds, wrinkles, and seams into it when it's wet. Very effective and convincing when dry, especially after painting, just not flexible after the watered down glue drys.
I suppose you could skip its coverage at the joints to try to get the best of both worlds
For Rons style of fixed pose custom figures, this is perfect for covering those unsightly joint seams.

Hi All,
I have started painting him, I mixed flat white and black to get the grey tone for the jumpsuit and as you can see and as Clonehead mentioned the wet tissue will sit perfectly over the already sculpted creases.
I have also started weathering the white areas by dry brushing the flat white and then adding a very soft black wash to the white areas.

Hi All,
The AT-AT driver is now 85% complete I have a few touch ups to do and the insignia and then weathering. For the helmet I added small parts that are at the front of the helmet above the eyes and at the back above the black square and these were done by cutting small pieces from plasti card.
I also added the gun belt and added an extra pouch to the belt which is from an old Bullseye Marvel figure. The thing in the back ground is going to be a small comms relay and has been built so far from a 1/1000 scale Enterprise Nacelle a old texta lid and I projectile from a GI Joe figure.

Hi All,
He's all done. I finished him off by printing off imperial logos and repainting and then used pastel chalks to weather him up and give the armour a more battle look to it.
The comms relay was done by using a 1/1000th Enterprise nacelle, bullets from some GI Joe figures, wire, plasti card and bits and pieces from the bits box. The snow was done by mixing some spakfilla, PVA glue and water together until I got the texture I wanted and the icicles are made by using Woodland scenic Water Effects.

The air tank has been built using a part from a 3-3/4" Imperial Evo Trooper, piece of plasti card tube, 1/72 scale tank wheels, two top of Hasbro SW missles, some 1/20 scale plastic nuts, two parts from the 6" BS speeder bike and some plastic tubes from the bits box.
The base is from the Bandai Stormtrooper and I have built up aroind it using plasti card as it will have a 9 volt battery underneath as it will have to lights in it. The lights run up thru the plasti tube and I have used a 1/35 scale tank wheel on the taller tube and the two tubes have clear domes that I gotten from two Star Trek kits.

Thanks heaps Shawn, I have to admit I do love the Bandai kits as the details are better and being an old school modeler it gives me the great satisfaction in building them. I have R2/R5 and C3P0 coming and I can't wait for them.
As for pricing a Hasbro stormtrooper in aussie dollars is around $35 and Bandai from HLJ is $21-$25 so the money is heaps better.

Hi All,
Well I have done the joint coverings to my second trooper and started a new dio as well.
So far the troopers joints have been covered using black balloons and I will be keeping the articulation on these guys. The shoulder pouches can be removed as I have added elastic to the backs and the small pouches on the left side I got from my bits box.
The structure so far has been done using marine foam and just cut to shape and the walls will be given it's texture using spakfilla.
The base was done by TSHobbies (thanks mate you did a brilliant job) and I just added a few washes of flat white to enhance the logo and writing. And here is a link to his work http://www.tshobbies.com/ (http://www.tshobbies.com/).

Hi All,
Did a little work on the dio today, I have made some extras for the roof and in the corner using bits and pieces from the parts box. I have also added a light which is circled in black and have filled in gaps using spakfilla and I will start the texturing of the walls tonight.

Hi All,
Have done more to the dio today.
The first pic I added spakfilla to the structure which is two tablespoons of spakfilla and 1 teaspoon of PVA glue once mixed I spread it over the structure and let it settle for about 10 mins. After the 10 mins I used a lightly damp small sponge and dabbed it over the strucrure to get the texture I wanted.
The second pic is the almost completed paint and weathering. I firstly painted the structure Vallejo's pale sand then gave it a wash of Vallejo's beige brown. Once the wash was dry I then dried brushed it Vallello's Dark sand and then pale sand.
After I dried brushed it I then gave it a deeper wash of Vallejo's Beige brown and then let dry and then dry brushed it again with Vallejo's Pale sand. The chipped away areas have been a two part wash mix of Vallejo's Beige brown and Pale sand.
The third pic I gave the greeblies a gun metal under coat then different washes of browns and reds till I got the rust effect I wanted.
The fourth pic I gave the small evaporator a under coat of gun metal then I lightly sprayed it matt white. Once the spray was dried I then gave it a wash of matt black let dry then gave it different washed of light browns and reds to give it battered weathered look.

Hi All,
The base is almost done I just have to let the sand dry and then start the last of the weathering. The sand was done buy mixing spakfilla/sand/PVA glue and then adding some watered down 50/50 mix of Vallejo's Brown sand and Pale sand.
With the mix just mix until you get a pancake type mixture and once mixed I dabbed the mix onto the base and then spread it out with a damp medium brush. I let the mix dry for about 12 minutes then got one of the Bandai Troopers and gently pressed his feet into the mix to simulate the foot prints.
As with any desert area sand will get everywhere so I added the mix to areas where sand would build up a lot like the roof and flat areas.
I will start weathering the troopers over the next few days.

60 Pages and still going! That base is amazing. Hands down it is one of your best. Makes me want one for my AT-AT Driver with a similar style of base except maybe in a snow theme. 60 Pages and still going! That base is amazing. Hands down it is one of your best. Makes me want one for my AT-AT Driver with a similar style of base except maybe in a snow theme. Hi All,
While I'm waiting for things to dry on my Sandtroopers I whacked together Bandai's C3PO and WOW it is an awesome kit, I will be doing him from EPIV and I still have to weather him and add wiring to the bicep section of the arm.
I have used small wires to simulate the damaged arm as well and the wiring will be able to be swapped out for the intact 3PO. as per PIC 1

Hi All,
While I'm working on a commission piece and letting the putty dry I decided to start on my 6" Look Sir Droids diorama and thought that I would show some WIP of the layout.
The escape pod is the one I built a few months back and I have used packing foam for the base and will be using plaster cloth to strengthen and build up the base.
I used my converted Bandai Stormtroopers as reference as I will be using Hasbro's Sandtroopers as this will be a static diorama.

Hi All,
Well while waiting for more material to arrive for a commission piece I'm the customer asked would a Sullust Trooper from the new SW battlefront that is coming be possible. I looked at the pics he sent me and told him not a problem.
I have attached the first pic to show what ref I went off.
The Sullust Trooper is the Bandai Trooperand I made the back pack out of plasticard and an old tube from a 1/12 scuba diver figure. The resus piece is plasti card and 1/35 scale parts and the rest of the back pack I just winged it,
The base so far has been made out of base from the Bandai Trooper and the stone is high density foam and the lava so far is Woodland Scenics Water Effects and once dry it will come clear then I will paint it then add more water effects on top and once dry it will give it that hot lave effect.

Hi All,
Here are a few pics of the Sullust Trooper and base. The whole thing is 90% complete I just have to do just a little weathering to the stone and Troopers back pack and it will be done.
Sorry I don't have pics of the procedure of how I painted the lava but I am doing a larger dio for a customer so I will do my usual tutorial for it then.

Hi All,
I finally got the weathering done and got my usual outdoor pics done so enjoy guys.
Recipe
Trooper - is from Bandai and has been built straight out of the box. For the back pack I used plastic card and the tube is from a Madelman scuba diver and the bracket and the front breathing apparatus is plastic card.
Base - is two Bandai Stormtrooper stands glued together then plastic card strips glued around the sides. The stone has been made using high density foam which I broke nad cut up till I got the desired look.
Once I got the look I wanted I then made cracks using a led pencil and model knife, I then used a piece of sand stone and pushed it into the foam to give it a more stone texture to it.
The lava was done by using Woodland Scenics Water effects and once dry I painted it black and let it dry. Once dry I painted the lava with different shades of reds, yellows and orange and once dry gave it several washes of blood red and then let that dry and then gave it a few layers of Woodland Scenics Realistic water.

Hi All,
This dio is for a client and all I have to do now is adjust the lighting and its complete.
The base is a picture frame with built up balsa wood, the rocks I made from left over pieces of high density foam. The lava I did by painting the top and bottom of the glass and then added Woodland scenics Water effects and once dry I painted over that. Once dry I painted over the water effects.
The x-wing pilot is the Luke figure from Hasbro and I added a holster from the Bespin Luke and repainted him and added decals to the helmet and repainted it as well.
The lights are fake candle lights which I need to adjust around the base to get a better effect.

Hi All,
Started another small dio and figure and this time it's Han in Stormtrooper disguise, I have completed Han and now I'm 80% completed on the base.
Han - the body is from Bandai and the head is from Hasbro's 6" BS, I repainted the 6" head has the sculpt underneath the crappy factory paint is very good.
I re-sculpted the neck covering using AVES putty and drilled a hole and inserted wire into that, I drilled a hole in the bottom of the head so it can be removed. The helmet was built and glued together and once dry I drilled out the bottom so that I could also insert it onto the neck.
Base - has been built up using foam core and then added plasti card to build up the walls, the vent looking area's were done buy using fly screen and gluing that down onto some plastic card then adding frame work around that.
The floor has been painted then clear plastic added over the top, once the final stage is done the floor will be sprayed matt black then clear plastic will be again added over the top of the painted floor.

Hi All,
The dio is now 95% complete I just have to add a little highlighting to the grill section and then I will take my usual out door pics.
The walls were sprayed using Tamiya's IJN GRAY and I gave it 3 coats and once dry the floor was painted Raven Black and then the dio was given 2 coats of Dull Coate and then a piece of clear plastic was cut to size and placed on the floor.
