Title: jlw515 Custom Figures Update 1-16-2024 Custom TESB BOBA FETT
Post by: jlw515 on December 03, 2009, 02:09:58 PM
I got into customizing yeeeaaarrs ago, back in the POTF2 days. Tomart's spotlight on Ken Pruitt is what got me hooked. You can check out my website http://cantinacustoms.tripod.com and see some of my older custom figures, vehicles, and dioramas.

This thread will be for all new customs figure. Most if not all of these have been shown on Yak & Scum before.

That Twilek is smoking, I mean really looks good, but not in a sleazy way if that makes any sense. I always get the feel with Talon that she is just too showy, but this Twilek is kind of saucy, but not too racey.

I love all the Bith cutsoms too. Man, we just need more aliens in this SW universe.

I loved the ships too, but will comment on them over there too. Looks like more fp material.

I can't imagine how long all these took. Excellent work.

What an incredible couple of postings full of custom goodness those were, jason! Man, you have some great figures to be proud of here. The bith are really cool but that Twilek takes the cake. Great job on these man!

I'll have to disagree guys, that guri ROCKS! Love it!

and Snoova, wow.. just awesome! using the removable armor from the Matt Tracker figure is AWESOME!  I have that armor in my fodder bin somewhere... I might have to coppy cat that one...

Did you use microman parts for the SA sand trooper?  If so... or even if not.. please reveal the parts and techniques used to construct his hip joints.  I know I would love to hear.

Wow, you have some great customs here! You seem to really know what you're doing with the soft goods, great stuff! That Bespin Han is awesome, he's what should have come in that asteroid exploration pack thingie (now re-released in the same lame sculpt), yours looks amazing! Also really loving your Guri, I think most everybody likes her yellow and blue outfit better than the one I used (which you should go check out in my customs section and let me know what you think!). Also that Snoova is amazing, you have to let us know how to make that guy! I'm sure your Cantina scenes are amazing with all these great customs, keep up the good work!

The Sandtrooper is not made from microman parts. Instead I used the pelvis and thighs from a SA Clone Trooper. I sanded down the Clone Trooper thighs into cylinders and then with my Dremel hollowed out the Sandtrooper thighs, and glued the pieces together. This custom was made before Hasbro ever showed pics of their new Dewback & Sandtrooper.

Also, thanks Xizor for the remarks. I have also made Guri in the red outfit a couple of times. Check out my link below to my website with pics of older custom figures.

Snoova was made from an extra Chewie figure I had and the old SOTE Snoova figure. I carefully cut the top of SOTE Snoova head off just under the head gear, and then hollowed it out with a Dremel. I also hollowed out the arm and leg bands. I had worked smoothing down the backside of Snoova's armor and shoulder pads, and had them to where I could glue them to the Chewie figure and they would look ok. I thought if I boiled the pieces it would make them softer to kind of bend them to fit the shape of the newer Chewie figure. Well, when I boiled the pieces it warped the hard plastic. Luckily I had the Matt Trakker armor from the new GIJOE figure. It actually worked better, I think. Finally I added the cape from the 500th Fett.

ooooh awesome, somebody else also made a Snoova custom!   ;D  Kick ass work on it too including an amazing use of Matt Trakker's armor.   And a perfect Guri too.  Shadows of the Empire customs make me happy.

Every piece there is great, bonus points for including Jenni from the cantina, an especially good one at that.

UPDATE!! Some of these customs are very simple, but effective. Enjoy.

Zuckuss
Body: Zuckuss
Skirt: ROTS Saesee Tinn
I am a big fan of soft-goods, but hated the split in this figures "skirt". So I swapped it out with the one with Saesee Tinn; trimmed it and gave it a wash with black to "weather" it.

Sai'torr Kal Fas
Body: H'rchek Kal Fas
Gloves: POTF2 Wedge
Boots: ROTS Count Dooku

H'rchek Kal Fas
Body: H'rchek Kal Fas
Gloves: ROTS Clone Pilot (black outfit)
Boots: Lt. Sunber (comic pack)

Henry "Indiana" Jones
Body: KOTCS Indy
Belt: ROTLA Indy
simple boil and pop to give Indy both a removable hat and a working holster.

VOTC (Kenner) Luke Skywalker
Head, chest, tunic, belt, feet: VOTC Luke
Biceps, forearms: Comic pack X-Wing Luke
Torso, elbows, thighs, knees: TESB Medic Frigate Luke
Calves: Floppy hat Luke
I wanted to make a tad-bit taller Luke than the VOTC. Well, I had cannibalized my VOTC figure for another custom (see below); so when I got the Med Frigate Luke I decided to make my own Kenner-esque VOTC Luke.

Grey Squadron Y-Wing Pilot
Upper body, helmet, boots: POTF2 Y-Wing Pilot
Legs, straps: Zev Snowspeeder pilot
I borrowed from Diago-bah's recipe. I dyed all the parts black and drybrushed grey onto the figure. Interesting note, although this helmet is in the Star Wars Chronicles book, it is NOT seen in the film; so this guy is more of an "off-screen" figure.

Nien Numb
Head: POTF2 Nien Numb
Chest: VOTC Greedo
Arms, Pelvis, Legs: ROTJ Legacy Nien Numb

Commander Luke Skywalker - Rogue Leader
Head, neck post - Lt. Jundland comic pack
Chest, pelvis, belt - Comic pack Luke X-Wing
Arms - VOTC Luke
Legs - Mon Cal femal X-Wing comic pack
Not an original idea, I've seen others do something similar; but where mine is different is the head reflects more of a ANH/TESB Luke (which fits my photonovel). With the exception of cutting & glueing the ball joint for the head, everything was a simple kit-bash with no painting. I did give the hair a bit of a wash. This is probably my favorite Luke custom. He will be used several times in my photonovel!

Rebel Technician
Body: KOTCS Russian Soldier
Head: Capt. Needa
Hat & radio (on back): Animal Planet figure
Headset: ROTS Pilot Obi-Wan
Not as "movie accurate" as Diago-bah's but I really don't like those "all seeing eyes" on the guys hats in ROTJ

(http://threads.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/SDC12064.JPG) (http://threads.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/SDC12066.JPG)
DSII Luke Skywalker
Body: ROTJ DSII Legacy Luke
Biceps: Juno Eclipse
This is the obligatory Juno bicep custom to rid DSII Luke of those awful ball joints. I particularly don't think that this outfit is as iconic as others make it out to be, so with the exception of the ball joint, I think its a pretty good figure. Also that weird hand sculpt is great for posing Luke like Joe Cocker playing the air guitar!!

Yellow Spacer aka "Cantina Dude" - man this guy needs a real name!!
Helmet: BoShek
Body: VOTC Bosskk
Cloves: some random Darth Vader
Boots: Biggs Darklighter X-Wing Pilot
The VOTC Bosskk is way out of proportion. The thighs are really long. So instead of making the calves look short by cutting down the boots, I opted to just make the guy kind of tall. I think I may go back and trim the inside of the helmet to make it sit lower.

Ceremonial Luke Skywalker
Head - VOTC X-Wing Luke
Body - Ceremonial Luke
This is probably my favorite outfit of Luke, and it was only briefly seen in ANH and the Holiday Special Cartoon. Simple head swap did wonders for this figure. Had to trim down the ball joint to make it work.

As always comments are encouraged. Thanks!

Post by: jlw515 on January 27, 2010, 08:59:13 AM
Thanks guys!!  The Y-Wing is my favorite starship in the entire Star Wars universe, and I especially liked the outfits for Grey Squadron. I'm really hoping Hasbro makes a version of this. So far they've really screwed it up. The POTF2 version has the right outfit, but the wrong color. Then they gave us Tycho with Grey Leader's helmet. NO A-Wing pilot ever wore the full face helmets in ROTJ. The helmet Tycho comes with is clearly "Grey Leader's" helmet. The chin section should have a sticker with RFB (Radio Free Bolinda - I think) which was a pirate radio station at the time Jedi was made.

Thanks again,

Jason

Here are a couple of customs of updated versions of the Kenner Hoth Rebel Soldier and Rebel Commander. Of course the "Rebel Soldier" is a matter debate as to the color of the outfit and whether it was suppose to represent what some call the "Tautaun Handler" or "Deck Officer."

(http://threads.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/SDC11687.JPG)Rebel Soldier aka Rebel Deck Officer

Hat - POTF2 Hoth Rebel Soldier
Scarf - Marvel Comics Marvel Girl (I think)
Head & Neck post - Boba Fett
Torso & Skirt - SW Saga Luke Skywalker
Gloves & Legs/Boots - Legacy Hoth Han Solo
Arms - TVC Admiral Ackbar
Goggles - BAD Hoth Rebel Soldier

Hat is removeable and all articulation works. Only painting involved was on the scarf which was originally red and the scarf on the hat.

Rebel Commander

Goggles - CW Obi-Wan
Head - Biggs Darklighter
Scarf - Marvel Comics Marvel Girl (I think)
Hat & Body - BAD Hoth Rebel Soldier

Biggs had to get a "hair cut" with a Dremel in order for the hat to fit.

Mon Cal Officer

Head, hands, helmet - POTJ Mon Cal Officer
Arms - ROTLA Salla
Chest, Skirt - TVC Admiral Ackbar
Legs - Saga Frigate Luke
Shoes - GIJOE Matt Trakker

I REALLY hate painting ball-joint hinges, so I'm always on the lookout for a pre-made part in the correct color. The Medical Frigate Luke legs worked perfect for this custom. Although not pictured, I used the legs from ROTLA Belouq (sp?) to replace the legs on Med Frig Luke. Since all he does is sit around there was no need for hinged knees. The legs, pelvis, & stomack all worked flawless with the Med. Frig. Luke

Mon Cal Technician

Head, Hands - POTF2 Admiral Ackbar
Body - VTC Admiral Ackbar

Thre are several Mon Cals in the background of ROTJ. So, since the POTF2 Ackbar headsculpt is slightly bigger and a different shade than the new VTC, I thought it would make for a great background Mon Cal member.

TEEBO

The head was made from a resin cast of one of the ewoks that came with in the comic 3pk. The mold builder I used is a latex mold builder that is pretty plyable once it dries. The two-part resin cast I use actually expands a bit when it cures. So, with the mold be a softer latex, the resin cast headsculpt actually came out a little bigger than the original (which usually with a 2 part mold builder you get a little "shrinkage" with the resin cast)

The fact that the resin cast head came out a little bigger worked perfect for both the body and the POTJ Teebo skull hat.

I trimmed down the skull hat from the POTJ Teebo to be more movie accurate. Production photos show Teebo wearing a skull hat like the POTJ version, but this was not exactly what he wore on the film.

To, me the 300th Boba Fett helmet is the best to date. Some of the paint applications could have been better, but as far as sculpt goes and over all paint, this was the choice for me. Along with the helmet, I also opted to use the backpack and wrist gaunlets from the 300th Fett. These also seem like the best to offer.

So, here are some pics of the final custom with some comments with each picture. I apologize for the terrible lighting, it is something I struggle with.

I dremeled out the helmet to fit the ball joint. I dremeled out a small "cone" shape to allow the helmet the full effect of the ball joint. I dry brushed some orange paint on the right shoulder armor to match the orange of the knee pads. Speaking of knee pads, I actually bought two different TVC Boba Fetts to work on this custom! One had the right shade of "green" for the chest armor, and the other had the right shade of "orange" for the knee pads.

The feet are from the Saga "Pit of Carkoon" Boba Fett.

I trimmed the "cape/poncho" closer to knee length. For the backpack, I basically followed Darklord1967's recipe. I really struggled on this backpack, because the Kamino Jango Fett uses the same PVC backpack as the 300th Fett, but attaches similar to the "evo" Fett. So, I almost just painted that backpack to match (and drill a hole lower in Fett's back), but in the end decided against it. Possibly use that backpack for another Fett custom (with all the Fett parts I have left over!).

Only thing I didn't like about using the 300th Fett backpack is that the missle seems a little thicker.

With the wrist gauntlets, I cut the right one off the 300th Fett and dremeled it out to fit TVC Boba Fett. I simply glued the gauntlet "hose" from TVC Fett to the bottom of the 300th Fett gauntlet. I cut and glued the hands from TVC Fett to the gauntlets from 300th Fett. The right gauntlet is actually glued in place. The swivel articulation wasn't as important to me as it fitting tight against the elbow joint. The left gauntlet from 300th Fett works fine with TVC Fett's elbow, but the socket isn't identical, so it's easy to pull off.

 (http://threads.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/SDC11966.JPG)   (http://threads.rebelscum.com/photogallery/data//500/SDC11969.JPG)

I actually attempted a couple of times to customize Boba Fett's rifle to look more movie accurate, but then just gave up on it, because the pieces were too small to work with. I figure I'll check out a website that sells a rifle that's more movie accurate.

Thanks to Darklord1967 for all the work he's done on his custom, which has greatly inspired my "kit-bash" version of his "better Boba Fett."

This is sort of an update to some customs I made some time back.

My favorite pilots are Y-Wing "Grey Squadron" pilots. Hasbro has attempted two or three times to produce a Y-Wing pilot, but has messed it up each time. The first time was with the old POTF2 Rebel Pilots Cineman Scene. The sculpt and helmet is that of a ROTJ Y-Wing pilot, but the color scheme was wrong, and he was mislabeled as an A-Wing pilot. The helmet that came with that figure, although it appears in the Chronicles (coffee table) book, it never appears in the movie (unless in the briefing room scene).

The next attempt was in the Saga line with Tycho which they put in a green A-Wing suit, but gave him a helmet that looks similar to "Grey Leader's" helmet in ROTJ. The paint scheme was great on the helmet, but the sculpt was terrible.

The third attempt has been with the recent Battle over Endor set, in which Hasbro basically gave us a B-Wing pilot molded in light grey. So right off the bat, the chest boxes are incorrect. Secondly the head sculpt is incorrect to the helmet that is offerred. If you watch the scene from ROTJ closely, the pilot who wears the "batman" helmet isn't Asian at all.

So, anyway here my customs of Grey Squadron. Grey Leader is actually an update to a custom I made from an A-Wing pilot and Imperial Scanning Trooper. I changed out the chest boxes and painted the helmet to look similar to the one in ROTJ. With the rest of the pilots, I Dremelled off the B-Wing chest boxes and glued pieces from the POTF2 figure (or resin cast made from that figure). The "batman" helmet was dry brushed to make it look weathered, and then I painted another helmet to look like the Asian pilot that says, "There's too many of them!!"

And I also made a Mon Cal Y-Wing pilot. These guys will definitely show up in chapters of my photonovel Vader's Quest.

Mon Cal pilot fits in new cockpit. Tight fight, but he's there.

After seeing the Sullstian pilot from the deleted scenes, I new I had to make one! Helmet is made from parts of Nien Numb helmet and A-Wing helmet. Not exactly happy how helmet turned out, so if anyone has an extra Nien or Ten Numb helmet they are willing to part with, let me know.

Growing up as a child of the 1980s, I was a big fan of GIJOE comics. I always loved the idea that each member had their own specialty ex. Machine Gunner, Commando, Medic, Laser Rifle Trooper, etc. Although Star Wars never really explored this venue in the movies West End Games kind of incorporated this into their role playing games. So, from these thoughts I've made some simple customs based upon the Rebel Commandos.

This custom started out as being a custom Princess Neesa, but when the Ewok pack pictures leaked out, I decided just to throw an extra hood on this figure and have an extra background, generic ewok.

Head: Comic pack ewok

Jason really like your figures you have posted. There are so many that I really liked but the Boba Fett caught my eye for sure. Im currently working on a movie accurate ROTJ Fett and made a proper blaster for him so maybe I can share some tips on how to make one. Anyway great stuff can't wait to see more!

Your custom Emperor Palpatine from the fist page is the best Emperor I've ever seen.  Seriously; hands down.

Why is it so hard for Hasbro to make the headsculpt for that figure?  I've never seen a convincing Emperor from them.

Spry,

It's interesting you would mention the Cantina diorama. It's actually just one side i.e. 2 alcoves. I've got plans to make another side (2 alcoves) and the main floor with fake backdrop, but like a lot of things it's been on the back burner. This diorama has actually sustained some damage to the plaster I used to make the texture, so I'm looking into molding the face of this diorama and actually pouring a cast resin of it, and then making the arched alcoves from 5" or 6" PVC pipe. It really depends upon how much it will cost, but I'd much rather have a plastic/resin cast of my favorite scene(s) in the entire Star Wars universe. Thanks for the great comments.

Also just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH IN BIG CAPITAL LETTERS for your website.  Your hard work on all those Cantina details is really great for Cantina junkies like myself.  I look at least once a week to get my Cantina fix.  I plan on using your floorplan for my own diorama within the next year or two.  Again, thanks so much for all your hard work.

Also great to hear about the site re-vamp... there is a lot of info and lists out there about stock cantina figures, that great thread at RS and a few others online, but I know you'd do a great job on taking it "next level" and add in some gallery shots of customs.  good luck!

R4-M9 is my all time favorite droid from the Star Wars saga. I was really excited years ago when Hasbro released the POTJ R4-M9, but I totally disagreed that the color scheme was correct. Plus fast forward to 2012, that old POTJ sculpt REALLY needs an updating, and NOT simply a B.A.D. repaint. So, I took the POTJ Head, added it to the ROTJ R2-D2 body, with Hoth (sensor-scope) R2 legs. I used the mechanics from a B.A.D. to make the head fit the body. Below you can see a comparison photo between the custom, a B.A.D. sculpt & ROTJ R2, plus another picture with the Disney R4-M9. I would love to see Hasbro update this droid!.

Congrats!  No part-swapping on this one, tho.

That's funny!! But we actually did take him to the doctor yesterday (his 8th day) to have a some cutting done! OUCH!!

Although he wasn't named, per se, after our own Imperial Shipyard's Jules, they do share the same name. My wife and I have a 2 yr old son together that we named after my dad's side of the family. So with number 2, I decided to name him after my mom's side of the family, and originally was going to give him the middle name Craton - which is Irish from O'Craton. So we started coming up with various other Irish/UK names to go with Craton, and when I looked through a baby book, I came across the name "Julian" and that was it! I was dead set on the first name Julian. Then my wife and I decided against naming our son Craton (which he our my boys go by their middle names), so she found the name "Cash." So in reality, everyone calls the baby Cash, but I call him "Jules."

And for any that don't know (you might want to sit down) - I know Justin (Yak Chewie) knows, but total "baby count" this makes NUMBER ELEVEN for our family!! We have a blended family of hers (5), mine (4), and ours (2) - ages run from 22 years (junior in college) to a week old. So, yeah we have a busy life!!

Wasn't as bad as you would think - plus she gave birth at home with no meds!! But I've had several friends tell me, "Your wife didn't give birth to a baby, she gave birth to a toddler!"

Momma and the baby are doing just fine, so we are really proud of our baby "Jules."

Well, we are "blended family" i.e. Mine (4), Hers (5), and Ours (2). My two oldest step-kids are already grown and out of the house - 1 in college, 1 has a family of his own.

My two oldest sons (Caleb & Chaice) liked Star Wars at one time. Caleb had some Ep. 1 figures and Chaice had quite a bit of Ep. 3 figures. However, they both grew out of it and are no longer interested in Star Wars. They are into school sports (Caleb - tennis; Chaice - football), and air soft guns.

However, knowledge of Star Wars has been benificial for them from time to time in school because some of their dork teachers make Star Wars references and only my kids have a clue what they are talking about.

Ceremonial Luke with articulated hips.
Head - Resurgence of the Jedi Luke
Upper body - Ceremonial Luke
Legs - Bespin Han
Belt - VOTC Bespin Luke (the first issue)
Feet - Baron Fel (comic pack)

I wanted a Ceremonial Luke (or Episode 4.5 Luke) with articulated hips. This is the main outfit for Luke in my photonovel, and I wanted Luke to have better articulation so that he could better ride a swoop or kick someone in the head.

The Bespin Han legs/pelvis fits perfectly with Ceremonial Luke. However this made Luke too tall, so I trimmed down the boots from the bottom at the skinny ankles. Then I glued the feet from Baron Fel. Now Luke is the same height as Bespin Luke & Jedi Luke.

Here is General Cody, which I introduced in the latest chapter of Vader's Quest.

The head is Jango Fett painted to give him some grey hair. The figure is made from a mix of Commander Cody & Sandtrooper parts. The head and helmet are interchangeable. The shoulder pauldron is from the POTJ Sandtrooper. I like those pauldrons better!!

Loving the updates to the ceremonial Luke...such an easy fix to that figure and one that, I admit, I've already 'borrowed' and used.

Cody looks great in this incarnation and you're right: the POTF pauldron does fit a lot better.  Nice work!

I was pleasantly surprised that the Bespin Han legs swapped out so easily with the Ceremonial Luke legs. Quick easy fix.

Cool Luke. I'd like to see a tutorial on how you shortened the feet. Anyway, great job.

Shortening the legs was nothing really. All I did was compare my custom to Jedi Luke & Bespin Luke to match their height. Then I cut off the bottom of the boots, which still left a bit of a socket in the leg. I used the feet from a Baron Fel comic pack figure. The one where he's in the officer uniform. The feet are actually glued in. I don't care much for ankle articulation, seeing as how I hardly ever use it. Simply as that.

Red Leader
Head/Neck Post - Red Leader
Body - Wedge (Red 2 X-Wing)

I'm tired of every new X-wing pilot figure using Luke's body. I had Wedge from the Red 2 X-Wing set, and don't think the headsculpt looks anything like Wedge (they should have just used the comic pack head); and I wanted a Red Leader that was taller than Luke. So I simply cut off the neck post from the Wedge body. Dremelled out a small hole. Cut the neck post off of Red Leader's body, leaving a stump at the bottom, and glued it into the hole I dremelled. You can see a comparison shot of my custom Red Leader with some of his vertically challenged Yavin pilots. The Wedge in the background is my custom Wedge.

Rebel Taun taun Trooper.
Body - Hoth Rebel Soldier
Legs - Han Taun taun
Head - various Hoth Rebels.

When Hasbro released Hoth Luke, I took my custom and put it back in the fodder box to make a couple of different custom Hoth troopers. So here is a Rebel Taun taun trooper. As you can see various heads can be swapped out to look like different characters.

Echo Base Officers
Colonel
Head - Biggs X-Wing pilot
Body - Gen. Riekeen

Captain
Head - A-Wing pilot
Neck post - Boba Fett
Chest/Skit - Saga Hoth Luke
Arms - Comic pack Wedge
Legs - Hoth Rebel Soldier

If you'll notice in the movie still some officers in Echo base do not wear gloves, and there are several that wear the same suit as Gen. Riekeen. I altered the rank badges as you can see. Again, the one on the right was made from left over parts from my custom Hoth Luke that went back into the fodder bin.

ENS Riev Tyrral

Head/arms - Comic pack Nrin Vakil
Body - Mon Cal A-Wing Pilot

Weequay Gunner - inspired by Luke Sprywalker's custom

Head/hands - Weequay Jedi
Arms - different Weequay Jedi
Chest - Darth Sidious
Vest - Han Solo
Belt - Qui-Gon Jinn
Skirt - Count Dooku
Legs - Barada Jedi

Ak-Rev - inspired by Luke Sprywalker's custom
Top half - Ak-Rev
Legs - Hoth Han Solo

Wookie Elder (Since the Holiday Special, I've always though an albino Wookie was interesting)
repaint of CW Chewbacca

Generator boxes

These are made from wooden cubes, available at hobby stores (Michael's, etc.). I used a compound-mitre saw to cut the angles. The one on the right was my first one, so some of the angles didn't come out as close as I would have liked. I applied various pieces (I think Daigo-bah refers to these as "greeblies"). The actual generators are more white than pictures. The lighting left them looking a little yellow in the picture.

As always comments and critiques welcome.

Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments!!

Spry, you are one of my favorite customizers! I love the way you blend parts together. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a huge Jabba's palace fan, but when I saw your customs, and I knew I had some parts, I just had to make those Weequay customs. Ak-Rev is SOOO much better now. Now he can be used in all sorts of situations, and not just some static pose playing the drums.

Thanks again everyone!!

Thanks! Including the recipe goes back to the days when Erik Stormtrooper was active in making customs. Actually some of my first custom figures can still be seen on his website. If I remember right you had to list the parts you used. I always like doing this, it saves from people asking me; plus I don't sell my customs so I'm not worried about some "trade secret" of knowing what parts I used. I'm always bugging other customizers about what parts they used in their customs. No one has ever complained, so hopefully it's never been an issue.

Ok, so they're not really "Mandalorian Clone Customs," but that seems to be the going trend in custom figures; and it made you look!!!!!

Herre are my entries for the latest Yakfinities!
Latara
Latara was the female co-star to Kneesa on the Ewok cartoon. There seems to be some inconsistencies on how she is painted. Latara even appeared in “Ewoks on Ice,” and Kenner actually made an Ewok doll of Latara.

Head – Ewok comic pack “Romba head”
Body – Wicket
Hood – from TRU Ewok multipack
Braid – Boba Fett

I may try later on to make a resin cast of Kneesa’s head so that Latara has a more feminine “cartoonish” head sculpt.

Togruta Female
I never considered Shaak Ti’s species as a “sex symbol” until I saw this avatar (pic in right corner) used on one of the forums.

Head – Shaak Ti (Ep. 2 Jedi Council)
Chest – Spylounge.net
Arms – Shaak Ti (I think I mix matched arms
Skirt – Shaak Ti (dyed a different color)
Legs – Asajj Ventress

Twi’lek Female
There is a Twi’lek female in the Outlander Club that has Caucasian skin tones.

Head – POTF2 Oola (which I think is an awesome sculpt)
Chest – Spylounge.net
Arms – Pregnant Padme
Legs – Leesub Sirlin
Skirt – Golden Compass figure (wished they’d make the sequels)

Leia the Librarian
I borrowed this idea from Dan of the Dead. He made a Baroness figure similar to this. I figure this maybe some sort of Fanboy fantasy of Leia as the teacher/librarian.

Head – Medical Frigate Leia
Chest – GIJOE ROC Scarlett
Arms – GIJOE ROC Cover Girl
Legs – POTF2 Mon Mothma
Skirt – Golden Compass figure

Green Alien Female
There was an alien similar to this in the “Vader’s Quest” comic book. I lucked out and got this cool custom head sculpt through the “treasure chest” on Rebelscum we mailed back and forth a few years ago.

Head – Custom (RS “Treasure Chest” find)
Body – Bariss Ofee

Hoth Echo Base Female
This is a simple “head swap.” The ball joint on the neck made the head swell out a bit. Makes the figure look a little like Dakota Fanning to me. There are several females in the background in Echo Base.

Head – Beru Whitesun
Body – Hoth Leia
Headgear – ROTS Obi-Wan

And last but certainly not least, getting away from the Femme Fatales; I present three Ewok customs!

(From left to right)
Ewok – Comic pack Ewok (I like the color of this figure)
Hood – Comic pack Ewok
Sling – POTJ Teebo

Head – Custom Resin Cast (this figure was originally my custom Teebo)
Body – Comic pack Ewok
Hood & Sling – TRU Ewok Multipack

Ewok – Comic pack Ewok (mix-matched head & body – painted black)
Hood & Sling – TRU Ewok Multipack
(This Ewok looks like an old grumpy elder to me)

This was my first commission. I had previously made a "vintage-esque" Power Droid, and a fellow customizer on Rebelscum sent me a Hoth Echo base GNK droid to paint for him.

Here is a picture of the stock GNK droid, my (first) custom "Vintage" Power Droid, commission Power Droid, and Hoth Echo GNK droid.

Commander Kurgan and I got into the “Secret Santa” list kind of late. So, our “secret” wasn’t so much WHO “Santa” was, but WHAT “Santa” was sending. Since we live on opposite sides of the globe, and neither of us have received our gifts yet; we have decided to post pics of our “Secret Santa” customs.

I didn’t take in “work in progress” photos so if Volker doesn’t want to see his “Secret Santa” gift then NOW IS HIS TIME TO HIT THE BACK BUTTON! LOL!!

Thanks guys for all the comments!! This custom is not as complicated as some, but it was really fun to do. In fact I'm currently working on another version similar to this. I'm also working on an updated Vintage-esque "Kenner Snaggletooth." I'm using a Takeel head from the old POTF2 Cantina 3pk. I've painted it grey with black hair and red eyes. I've got the body painted, just got to do a little more work with my Dremel (special thanks to my wife for buying me a new one for Christmas! I had my old one for years and the brushes and switch finally went out! So, I've had several custom projects on the back burner because of no Dremel) and then I'll be done.

Thanks again for the comments, they really mean a lot!

Title: Re: jlw515 Custom Figures Update 5-22-12 GI Joe Customs
Post by: jlw515 on May 22, 2013, 07:24:40 PM
Well as many of you know, I’ve gotten away from Star Wars customs and have started working on some G.I. Joe customs. I think the Joe custom bug bit me when I made a simple Baroness custom from a figure I got from Mr. Black on ISY.

Head: Hoth Leia w/ Baroness hair & glasses
Body: ROC Baroness

Lady Jaye, my all time favorite female Joe!

Head: Medical Frigate Leia face w/ Angelforge custom cast helmet & hair
Torso & Upper Arms: DVD Cartoon Lady Jaye
Arms & Hands: Retaliation Lady Jaye
Legs: Renegades Scarlett
Holster, Pocket, Knee Pads: DG Cobra Soldier

My hat is off to those of you who can successfully paint the eyes of the Angelforge custom head sculpt. I tried and knew I would never get the results I wanted. Plus, I'm pretty good with a Dremel. So, I removed the hair from Frigate Leia, leaving almost a mask. Then Dremelled the face away from the Angelforge cast leaving the hat & hair. I am sooo pleased with the results. Now, if I can find the 30th box set Lady Jaye at a decent price, I can use my custom head with that body and have (IMHO) the perfect Lady Jaye.

G.I. Jane, this is basically a repaint of my “Librarian Princess Leia” with a Retaliation Lady Jaye head.

I know a lot of people have complained about the ROC Cover Girl head sculpt, but I like it. It looks a lot like the Sunbow cartoon Cover Girl

Ok, I’ve got some news that’s probably going to be disappointing to some of you, but I feel obligated to make this announcement. I am officially turning in my resignation as a Star Wars collector/customizer. With the recent slump in Star Wars toys, coupled with the weak showing of what’s expected for 2013, I have in the meantime started collecting modern G.I. Joe figures. I was very excited at what Hasbro has to offer later in the year in the G.I. Joe line.

I was a huge G.I. Joe fan from 1982 to about 1987. Read the comics, played with the toys, etc. Modern G.I. Joe collecting has even gotten me interested in reading G.I. Joe comics again. I am currently reading the Hama series (which picks up from the old Marvel series) and the new IDW series (that has the character Hash Tag).

I REALLY want to take on the project of putting together a U.S.S. Flagg, which is going to be an expensive project. So I have decided to sell off my Star Wars collection, which will include custom figures & ships. I will start listing ships/vehicles for sale first on both Yakface & Imperial Ship Yards. This will include such custom ships as my custom Big Millennium Falcon (which will include TWO mini ships and pilot Han & copilot Chewie), custom Y-Wings, custom Red 5 X-Wing (from Trench set), etc. If I don’t get any response from these forums, I’ll list them on ebay.

So, be on the lookout soon for a list of custom ships/vehicles for sale, or if you see something on my custom page(s) that you are interested in send me a PM.

Oh, by the way (and this is the really disappointing news), but my Photonovel “Vader’s Quest” is hereby cancelled – not postponed or put on the back burner, but cancelled. I’m very sorry, but that is how frustrated I am with Star Wars collecting. But not to leave a cliff hanger ending to the last chapter, I’ll briefly tell you some of my thoughts as to where I wanted “Vader’s Quest” to

Anyway, to the fans of “Vader’s Quest” I deeply apologize, but I have no plans to continue the series. I actually am making plans of starting a G.I. Joe photonovel late this year or early 2014. My interest in G.I. Joes is limited compared to Star Wars. If it was OT Star Wars, I was buying it! But there’s only about 40 to 50 Joe characters I like, and even less Cobras. I’ve got (what I think is) this cool idea for a Joe photonovel, but it will be a story with a beginning, middle, and end; not an ongoing series.

I’ll still post pics of custom G.I. Joe stuff, and will even post the photonovel when I start it.

Thanks for your understanding.

Bummer to hear about your disappointment in SW.  I feel your pain.  Too bad Hasbro cancelled the Build-A-Droid line.  I still hope there will be a Mara Jade coming out as she was part of the BAD line.  We'll see.

I can understand this and it angers me.

I don't blame you one bit for walking away from SW AF at least as far as Hasbro is concerned. GG, Sideshow, and Kotobukiya now I am getting way more enjoyment from than Hasbro. I think we have all been very patient with Hasbro for quite a long time, but I keep hoping someday maybe Hasbro will improve their SW Offerings again and maybe you will change your mind.

That being said, your update is on the front page. Love your graphic work in addition to your great custom work. You are doing marvelous things with Leia heads. Hopefully you can salvage some of your SW Figures into very useable JOE parts. I will be looking for your for sale threads. I have always been known to by an TESB ship or two.

Thanks Tamer! Pretty much, even if Hasbro was to offer a Cantina playset with exclusive Tonnika Twins action figures I'd probably still pass. If any of you have ever been through a divorce, you'll understand this statement: there's not enough good Hasbro/Disney can do to the franchise to make up for the bad. So I'm done.

When I start offering the biggest ships first, it'll be some good deals. I'm planning on including extra figures with the big ships.

Well Lance Quazar has made a desperate appeal that I at least make one final chapter to attempt (my words not his) to wrap up the story of Vader's Quest. So I deleted part of my post above, hopefully too many people haven't read it. No promises, but I'll see what I can do.

I also hope you can make one last chapter, it is always great to see a story finished. I will be glad to check out this new Joe photo novel when you get to it. Great looking figures and I love that lady Jay! All of the dremel work/plastic surgery looks perfect!

Here are some Joe customs I have been working on recently. If everything works out, I will be starting a photonovel (dio-story to Joe fans) later this year. So, I have been acquiring the Joe figures I want for my team and working on new file cards. I like to keep the outfits/clothing close to the original look but with a few things updated. Most of these are easy customs with just some slight things added and washes done to the actual figure.

Thanks guys for the comments. Customizing Joes has definitely been refreshing in the aftermath of Hasbro's Star Wars debacle! Not to bag on SW collecting, but after seeing the first run of peg warming Black Series figures, I am glad I cut and run when I did! One thing I'm really liking about customizing Joe stuff is that basically sine the 25th Anniv figures came out back around 05 the body construction for figures has remained the same. It's way easier to swap parts, and the figures come with much more accessories. My wife almost freaked out when I started selling off my SW collection, and I had to convince her that GI Joe was just as much a part of my youth as Star Wars.

I've still got to finish the last chapter of my SW photonovel before I start the Joe novel, but that will all still be later this year - probably December.

Slowly but surely I am working on putting together a G.I. Joe diostory/photonovel. This will all be total fan fiction based on my own “Joeverse.” Elements from the comics, cartoons, and movies will find their way into my Joeverse. My G.I. Joe team consists of all ’82 to ’84 figures, but from ’85 onward it gets sporadic (not a big fan of Bazooka or Quick Kick). Anyway, here is my first GROUP of customs (some of these have been seen before, or variations of). G.I. Joe and the OG13 (I’ve even customized their file cards to make them less time specific, and to give more a variety of military branches).

I bought a HUGE parts lot from a local Arkansan GI Joe customizer who was basically getting out of the hobby. I basically hit the mother load of parts & vehicles. I think so far I have customized/rebuilt 60 to maybe even 100 figures. I've rebuilt a lot of Cobra officers/troopers. I've also been fortunate enough to sell/trade Star Wars ships & figures for G.I. Joe figures/vehicles. Special shout out to Luke Sprywalker for hooking me up with some Joe stuff!! We won't get into the Valentine's Day wrapping paper I put in your box of astromech droids I sent you. Shhh... It'll be our little secret!! HA!

Before anyone can ask, the final chapter of the SW Vader's Quest photonovel has been put on the extreme back burner. If & when it gets done, I don't think it'll be an action figure photonovel. I may just try my hand at drawing the last issue. I'm a pretty good artist, and have always wanted to draw my own comic. But again that is on the extreme back burner - sorry Lance - (I barely find time to customize between family, work, college - starting Greek grammar I this fall!!, & church - "sleep" what is that?!)

I've already got some custom Cobra villians done. I'll have to take time to photograph them. So far I have Scrap-Iron, Destro, and Baroness (and variations of the Baroness).

My favorite Cobra uniform is the original with the helmet and face scarf. I'm not into all the different "Vipers" so really my Cobra team is made up of a buch of different colored soldiers in the same uniform. I have "re-built" many Cobra figures from the big parts lot I bought.

Here are my Class of ’83 customs for my Joeverse. Some of these are basic parts swaps just to look more like the ’83 character. For example, I love the POC Snow Job, but to make him look more like his ’83 outfit he simply needed a coat with a hood up. Also, I envision a character like Doc to be more of a base surgeon, not a field medic. I also “fixed” his file card. The ’83 card had his 2nd MOS as “Chaplain’s Assistant” which is basically a gun-toting body guard for the Chaplain. Well, you can’t be non-combatant AND a Chaplain’s Assistant. Given that his rank was Captain, I think they probably meant for Doc to be a Chaplain (which have officer’s rank). Ace I wanted to look more like a Raptor pilot. The Cover Girl custom is a variation of a custom I did earlier. My favorite custom of this bunch is Gung-Ho. The 8pt cover from Ragin’ Spoon totally makes this custom!! Much thanks to Ragin’ Spoon for hooking me up!!

I finally got my "Social Clash" two pack in and wanted to post some comparison pics.

The figure on the left is my custom Lady Jaye based upon the amazing fanfic artwork depicting Lady Jaye back-to-back w/ Flint. On the right is the "Social Clash" Lady Jaye. The headsculpt of the new Lady Jaye is just terrible! So a simple head swap with my custom Lady Jaye head and BAM! a 50th Lady Jaye!

I didn't realize until I got the figure that the "Social Clash" Lady Jaye is simply the (newer) DVD Lady Jaye upper body with different legs. So, here is another comparison picture with the gear swapped out.

I went ahead and made a custom Lady Jaye head without the hat. The face is a Black Series Padme with hair from dvd Lady Jaye.

I really love the "Social Clash" Lady Jaye body and web gear. IMHO it is THE definitive ARAH Lady Jaye counterpart, but again Hasbro needs to work on those headsculpts. After getting this two pack, I'm seriously thinking of painting my custom LJ's hat black like the ARAH figure.

Comments and critiques are always encouraged!!

The Baroness is probably my favorite character in the G.I. Joe universe. She is deadly and sexy all at the same time. I think Hasbro has done a pretty good job so far with depicting the Baroness - especially the latest (50th?) body sculpt. However, they sure need to work on a new headsculpt! The exclusive Baroness with Ravage has a great headsculpt, but it is scene specific with the mic/ear piece.

I have worked on several different Baroness headsculpts. Two are from a Marvel Universe character. One of them I changed out the hair with the more traditional ARAH-esque Baroness hairdo. The other I left with the MU "wavy" hair, except I repositioned the hair just a bit closer to the ear to mask where I cut off the tip of the "elf ear." I also added glasses from AVAC's LAB!!

The third headsculpt is a 25th Baroness face with hair from Retaliation Lady Jaye. This has a more utilitarian look, which I love!

The blue outfit Baroness was actually a Guri custom from my Star Wars customizing days. Didn't want this figure to to go waste, so I changed her up a bit to make another Baroness. I figure the Baroness to be very feminine, but very deadly - meaning she could Ninja-fight wearing a skirt and high-heeled boots. The fish net affect was created using those rub on stickers. I let the stickers sit on the plastic for a day, and then carefully peeled the matte finish plastic off leaving behind the black ink. I pulled some of the black ink off in certain parts, but that's fine the long skirt hides most of it.

And finally a Baroness in a more formal outfit. The body is a SW "Fireside" Padme. I originally used a Slave Leia head which looks more in proportion to the body. I added a bun to the back of the head and again glasses from AVAC'S LAB. But, I always just see Princess Leia when I look at that face. The MU headsculpt looks good, but reminds me of the Baroness/Ravage figure in that the head looks a little too big for the body.

Anyway, comments and critiques are encouraged!!

Title: Re: jlw515 Custom Figures Update 1-16-2024 Custom TESB BOBA FETT

WOW! I think it's been at least ten years since I have customized a Star Wars figure. For those that remember me, I used to customize all the time. I even developed the Cantina Customs web page (I lost access to updating it many years ago) and way back in the day was into photo novels (Vader's Quest). Back in 2012, I made the jump from SW customizing to G.I. Joe customizing. Plus, college life (much later in life) has been demanding over the past decade, but I am almost PhinisheD with post-grad school and this summer I will officially be "Dr. J"!!

When the new Target exclusive Boba Fetts were released, I just had to grab some. I prefer TESB Boba Fett's color scheme over ROTJ, plus I love how the flamethrower/laser details are exposed on the left gauntlet. So, I knew I would try my hand at updating a custom TESB Boba Fett!

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXG1zl6DUSuSXv7PKjecBxnD0ISomYUvLZsajikJ9brs_GIAu3G-j2Izf8Dt-sTLFRc0ErUJA2X6RovTdxBmRuq8J5d2VEloXeCMV5adj7Y9ExVB242Hax8FiL0H5Gvfd8GAdSxmDpwLqklJcVx4lc4BWYubiKMYB5Y71W_-TMATOD-wEvyRCxRVCNnC4/s1280/Slide1.JPG)

So, the base figure is the VC186 ROTJ Boba Fett. I removed the belt and green cape. I also trimmed off the flamethrower/laser cover off the left gauntlet.

I created the new belt from piecing together the belt from Evolutions Boba Fett, the holster from the Solo-Han Solo 2pk Fett, and pieces from the new G.I. Joe Grunt web gear.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD-mf04_p3RClsdTgrmtKLExTyBoL1lae8mvRitGSDHGKt7Yltd8LLm3cBOxIdQ6pBgI1UPDfyuLCMZawRy3LSb7VWqv6M0aU37U3UciIRH2x4og0lbpRlwMCx80Ah0OYZCOd_gDDyyPTkHfj0UBiyTlfF1SfEs_pD-piR8z3brDTMC23c4BppIaSm24s/s1280/Slide3.JPG)

I trimmed down a cape from Evolutions Fett and attached it under the shoulder armor. I also sliced off the flamethrower/laser details from the Solo-Han Solo 2pk Fett and glued it to the left gauntlet. I like how this sculpt has the mounting plate sculpted. The left gauntlet was really important to me for this custom. I did not just want to paint the gauntlet and keep the rectangular flamethrower/laser cover. Once the flamethrower/laser detailing was attached, I painted both gauntlets and the jetpack adding weathering to both. Another important detail to this custom for me is to have a moveable range finder. So, I trimmed the sculpted range finder off, Dremelled a hole and attached the range finder from a scrap 300th Boba Fett using hot glue to fill in the socket. I also painted in the two slivers on the left chest piece. Finally, I gave the body a wash in dark grey to dirty the figure up a bit.

The rifle is a kit bash from the VC186 Fett and Evolution Fett rifles.

Here are comparison pictures of my older custom Evolutions TESB Boba Fett and new VC186 TESB Boba Fett. The older Evolutions custom has a 300th Fett head (Dremelled to fit), left gauntlet, and customized jet pack.

Finally, here is a collage of my Boba Fett shelf in my home office. Carded figures in the back, 6" figures, Funkos, and Legos in the middle, and loose figures in the front. I also have this super-cool cloth flag/wall hanger that my daughter got me in Okinawa (not pictured).

In the past ten years, I have also worked on G.I. Joe customs. You can check out my blog: https://gijoerevisited2.blogspot.com/

Thanks for taking a look. Comments, questions, and critiques are always welcomed!

Nice to see you back! Your Fett custom is really excellent, you paid a lot of attention to detail and it shows. I really like how the gauntlet turned out. Great job with little bits!

On another note, congratulations on seeing the finish line fir the doctorate. Stay the course, I've known a lot of folks to wash out at the end! If I may, what's your field of study?

I started college much later in life at 40. I went to a conservative Christian college for my undergrad and was originally going after a bachelors in business; however, like many freshmen, I changed my major within the first semester. I told my wife that if I (and the family) were going to invest time and money into college, I was going to earn the degree I really wanted - a PhD in Theologial Studies. So, in my undergrad I earned a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in Leadership & Ministry, then in grad school a Master of Divinity in Bible & Theology, and now I am at the very end of finishing my dissertation for a PhD in Theological Studies.

Since I started, for the past ten years, I have been in college full time. Believe me when I say, after this summer, I am totally PhinisheD!! In addition to my full-time job, I have been working the past three years as an adjunct professor for a seminary and a teaching assistant at the grad school (same one I attended). I am hoping that they offer me a full-time position once I've defended my dissertation and completed my PhD.
