Hello guys Once again I will have all my dios in this one thread and I will start with my older stuff and work my way up to the new. Without further  delay here is my Rancor pit.

Love that Rancor pit!  Is that spray foam insulation you used?

That rancor pit is just killer! What did you use to make the gate?

Boy if that isn't killer. How in the heck did you do all of that? It looks so realistic.

Thanks everyone and Psyclone figured it out it is spray foam. It is fairly easy but i had used/experimented with it a few times before I made this. I was using it for something at work and instantly the light bulb popped up. So go get a can and experiment a little, watch how it expands, put different amounts on a few pieces of cardboard and watch it grow. It will grow until it is dry so start off sparingly until you have the idea. It dries Tan and I spray painted everything brown then gave it a series of tan washes to get the right look. The gate is simply foam core that was painted. I even have the gate key pad in the back room that Luke hits with the skull. If you guys are interested I have about 30 or so photos of every element of this scene...just like the movie.

Consider me entranced................. Just like you said, you recreated every scene from that part of the movie here. This is truly a piece of work, man! I like the shot looking through the floor with all of Jabba's minions looking down at the action.

THAT IS AWESOME>...

however... the final scene with the keeper needs the HB treatment..  Hangarbay, oh master of all things photoshop, make the fat man cry!   ;D

I have a question... you say you spray painted the foam sealant?  I have tried this and it always melts..  I know me (and probably Doc for sure) want to know how you managed to keep the foam from melting....

Spud and Doc, thanks for setting me straight and jogging my memory. When I was testing this stuff it did melt when spray painted. I did paint this with a brush...sorry it has been YEARS since I made the pit. Sadly it is stored in my shop as I am running out of room. My son and his huge drum set took over my SW room. haha

No worries - we're just on this "Eternal Quest" it seems.  "How can you use spray-paint on styro without melting it?"  So far, the answer seems to be "Move to Australia."

Why not just get yourself an airbrush and use acrylic/latex paints?  They aren't that expensive and if you're doing a lot of foam work it's well worth it.  I've heard of other ways to go about painting foam like Foamcoat and Krylon's H20 paints but never tried them.  I have an airbrush so I either use that or a regular brush and a quart of house paint in the color I want.  I remember making the spray can mistake wayyyyy back when I started customizing.  I was so bummed because it was a great piece of packing foam that I could never replace.  Anyway, an airbrush is well worth the $, IMO.

There's a lot of talk on the web about this topic.  Anyone from theatre prop people to crafties to Wargamers.  Everyone seems to want the answer to this question and someone almost always has a different answer.

Here is a Google search : http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=melting+styrofoam+spray&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=melting+styrofoam+spray&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8)

Here is the Foamcoat product page : http://www.rosco.com/us/scenic/foamcoat.asp (http://www.rosco.com/us/scenic/foamcoat.asp)

Krylon H20 : http://www.krylon.com/environment/h20/ (http://www.krylon.com/environment/h20/)

But, like I said, I recommend anyone who does dios on a regular basis to get an airbrush.

Oh, I *have* an airbrush... and ~50 different acrylic paints.  Its the *COMPRESSOR* that is currently the sticking point!  And dad told me I should put that on my Christmas list.  The H2O paints are ok - rather bland/basic selection of colors and the propellant *still* melts styro if you get too close.  It doesn't seal off the styro, either, for coming back to use non-latex spray-paints on.

Haven't seen the Foamcoat stuff, so thanks MUCH for that tip.

My main issue on styro is that I need something to seal a given chunk of packing foam so as to eliminate the obnoxious "obviously styrofoam" look after I paint it.

I have a cheap airbrush and a little more expensive one.  The cheaper one I just hook up to a can of Propel : http://www.dharmatrading.com/products/cair.html (http://www.dharmatrading.com/products/cair.html)

We may have talked about this before, maybe over at 'Scum. I think I know what you mean about the styro look. Those little beads that show. That's where the Foamcoat might come in handy but I've never used it.  It says it's like glue but thinner.  I would recommend also the Subterrain Foam Putty : http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woost1447.htm (http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woost1447.htm).

That stuff will go on like spackle and not chip or flake.  Then you can sand it down flat if you put a thin layer on.  So, you can keep all those cool angles and humps in the packing foam from TVs and other appliances.  The stuff can then be painted over.

Sorry about the thread jack, Sprywalker.  That Rancor pit is still blowing me away.

Did you use that foam that hardens for insulation that is I'm speechless. I like Palpatine's  office like the colors as well. What shade is that red and is it applebarn colors or something else.

Clone Commander, thank and glad you noticed the lighting on the wall sconces. I also have lights around the top that gives a low glow as well.

Barry thanks my man, you are too kind.

DRS, yes you are right, we set up scenes from different eras in here as well. Scroll down for a funny one...

Jtrooper, i know you could make this with everything you have done so far. The Rancor Pit is the expanding foam and it is called Great Stuff. I made Palpatines Office years ago, I got the paint from my parents who had repainted a lot of different things and gave me left over paint. Sorry I know that wasn't much help...

Tamer, thanks man and I'm glad to hear your daughter is liking them. I still have a few cards to throw fett

Jules, Oh I can't believe that. Your work is brilliant man! But thanks for the kind words buddy.

StenHunter me too, My office is jammed full of crap...but I love it!

Clint thanks buddy. It is made of foam core, thin cardboard stock, Das Pronto, a putty that air dries, and latex paint most likely from Lowes.

and now the party at Palpatines.

Wow, it has been a while since I posted anything and I am glad to get back to it today. I am working on a modular play set of a Rebel Base. The idea is that this is the storage/maintenance bay of the base. It is inside a cave/ancient burial chamber that they stumbled upon when scouting for a well hidden location. As you can see they have stolen a few imperial vehicles and made a few of their own. This is the result after about 2 days on and off mocking up what i wanted it to look like.

Wow, the ice cave look is working out great. Did you just carve styrofoam? Whatever it is, it looks great and I love how it integrates with the shippy look too. I so hope to pull this off myself one day. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Thanks guys. It does look like an ice cave since it is white but I am thinking about a coat of primer, a base coat of black, then finish it off by blending 2 different colors of grey leaving the black in the crevices. I made the rest of the upper platforms and plastered more than half of it last night. I'll get some new pics soon...I made the plaster so runny it is still wet! I need heat in my garage...

The plaster has finally dried. Here are a few pics of the upper level I built 2 days ago.

Here it is with 3/4 of it plastered. I'll have to say it does look like an ice cave...

I don't know about you guys but I go to the thrift store every Friday. Look at this amazing find that is perfect for this dio!

What? You dont see what I am so excited about? Come on...

Look at the beautiful drawers/trays/whatever you want to call them, the parts that hold the cassette tapes. They have a familiar look/shape to them.

It looks like a troop/pilot transport to me! What do you guys think? I think it will work with a few minor changes.

Post by: Luke Sprywalker on January 24, 2010, 08:06:40 AM
Thanks guys, glad everyone is liking it. Now to answer a few questions. The left and right lower sides and the middle section was made from styrofoam packing pieces that were in my attic. The upper left and right sections were made from sheet styrofoam. I cut everything out with a razor knife and sculpted everything with my hands/fingernails and only in a few places used a wooden skewer. The plaster is regular dry wall joint compound thinned with water so it doesn't go on too thick. Also when it dries it cracks really nicely due to all the water evaporating so it leaves a nice rocky look. Clint you are right I now have a few more cargo bins that can mount onto the Big Mother Trucker. Now I am off to finish painting the storage rack and prime the walls, maybe another update tonight or tomorrow.

Oh yea, as for the transport all I want to do is fabricate the seating, a platform on the back with controls for a driver and paint it. I was thinking about sticking with black, what do you think about the color of it?

haha trash to treasure Dan. Clint after the primer coat I had to leave it white. The controls are quite simple but I may add a computer screen or something between the levers. It seems this type of transport would be very simple. There are more pics in my vehicle thread.

Your dio is coming  along great and getting equipped nicely. That transport is kicken! It almost needs something but I can't put my finger on it. Perhaps some markings. I can see some yellow caution stripes or checks. I don't know. perhaps some brake lights or something.

Hats off to you, Sprywalker.   As a fellow  rebel pilot collector, this dio is awesome!!  I love the entire scene, and that Gamorrean pilot is too cool!  Great work all the way around.   I have seen the Gam. pilot on wookiepedia and often thought how to pull that off.   Did you use a Jek Porkins body for him?
Again, fine, fine work. . . . to be remembered in the Jedi Archives.
Title: Re: Luke Sprywalker Dioramas

No doubt Sarge, trash to treasure is the name of the game and I love it!

CD glad you are enjoying the progress shots. Yes I do have most all Rebel Pilots plus I have made a few from Rogue Squadron like Piggy you noticed. I want to remove his guard helmet and mod Nirin's helmet to fit Piggy. Yes that is Porkins body for him.

As much as I liked the transport I knew it was missing something as Clint pointed out. I went with just a few yellow markings as I don't want it to get too wild looking. While painting I noticed the front lower piece peeling away, it was protective selafane  that had never been removed from when these drawers were new. I pulled it off and revealed a nice shiny silver piece that looked pretty cool as is. So I then dry brished a little silver on the front vent area then the steering vanes in the back. I thought about painting more of the rear platform yellow but decided to hold off and get some feedback on the latest changes first.  Oh yea, you can't see it very clear in the pics but I cut off the tips of 2 green and 2 yellow lightsabers to simulate lights in the holes by the steering vanes. So what do you guys think now?

Thanks Jules, and go for it man!

Small update to the dio. This is a mechanic I made for the dio and his work area. He has a several droids to help him get everything done. He has also created a droid of his own design for cutting metal, welding and many other tasks. Also a small examining table with power lift and diagnostic equipment built in. More to come soon, let me know what you think so far.

Thanks guys, all the work and putting together the small details has taken several nights traded for sleep. There are 2 tool boxes full of tools you may have noticed the one I left open. So this is the one small part of this diorama and I plan to work all weekend detailing the rest. A few more areas are partially done  much more will be revealed next week. Dan, this is made from packing styrofoam that various electronics are shipped in. Then I added some pieces for the top wall, just go back to the start of this project to see it come together.

Wraithnine, I have an extra and would gladly trade a Nadar for him. I would like to get two for that matter, any others you are looking for?

Michael, yes there are many different way's to customise things. If you don't have the funds to buy figures go to thrift stores every week with about $5 and you will come home with some great items to work on. I have been thinking about starting a thread about my thrift store finds and what I do with them...could be interesting.

Over the weekend I put a few more things together, finished the computers and got most of the figures I want to use out of various bins. Did a few head/parts swaps and not too much painting. I have been trying to decide what to do with the upper right section of this dio and finally decided on a medical bay.

This is a shot of how I modified the turrets for 2 gunner stations.

Here it is in action...

Now I would like some constructive criticism/ ideas of what I should add to make it complete/look more realistic. The main thing that bothers me is the blank walls on the upper sections. The only thing I came up with is to add some fairly thick guage wires to simulate piping. On the other hand I don't want the tactical room to look like Hoth.  Any ideas?
Title: Re: Luke Sprywalker Dioramas
Post by: TheCloneCommander on February 08, 2010, 06:54:07 AM
how about some electrical wire in and around the room ie: walls, floor,  to each console, some air hose's as well... some power droids...
Title: Re: Luke Sprywalker Dioramas
Post by: Tamer on February 08, 2010, 06:57:22 AM
I don't know that there is anything I don't like about this. Every update just ingrains it more to me. I love the gunner station, the computer console station, and the medical bays. It is a rebel playset we wish we all had. I love the fact that  you show us what to do and have turned trash into riches so to speak with some of the great things you have made to go with this.

Now if I were to critique anything, it would be I would have left that bad boy white and perhaps on the floor I would have added something that looked like metal grateing. LOL. Yeah, I know, I am Hoth crazy. Maybe it has something to do with all the snow out there now.  All joking aside, seeing this makes me envision if I could actually make something like this with perhaps three to four levels for my dio display cabinet and I aim to try it one day. Thanks for sharing it with us and ofcourse I am going to the fp to spread the word.

Title: Re: Luke Sprywalker Dioramas
Post by: Clonehead on February 08, 2010, 07:12:58 AM
Yep, I knew we could expect a hothish response from Shawn and I do concur with his response and think that the wiring/piping you mentioned is what the walls need. I like the control area and like how the multiple star trek panels work together. You could always add a closed door to break that one wall up. This is a great looking project and a nice way to display some figures as well as your craftmanship.

How about computer boards on the Back Walls of the Tactical Room, Maybes some viewscreens on there as well.

I like the piping suggestion, however you run the risk of it looking like Hoth, however I also like the grating suggestion that has been mentioned, if you make some of the floor look more metallic and add some see through mesh in there as well, which you can look down and see the lower levels, how do they get up the the higher levels (put a lift/elevator in), put some free standing walkways in it, leading maybes to a part thats free standing from the base.

If you want something simple and not Echo base like to break up that wall I would suggest something I think is called a tote board. At air bases, at least the ones I've seen is Austraila which are pretty low tech (we are on the frontier after all), They have a big white board with a list of planes and their pilots and call signs, status and flight numbers and stuff on it. Maybe something like that could be what your after. Would be pretty simple to make and would contrast with your wall colour nicely.

ssshhheeewwww! I am done with my dio for the contest at GTG...

My diorama is modular and collapsable. It can be used for Star wars or GI Joes all you need to do is swap out the proper background filler, vehicles and figures. It is for my son and I to play with and reenact scenes or make up our own. For this contest I decided to use it as X-Wing Rogue Squadron's Rebel Base and repair/build facility. You can see many vehicles built by their mechanic/droid builder/vehicle designer, you may also notice his pet and his own version of the invisible fence. On the storage rack you can find storage containers, medical unit, stolen speeders and various other items as things come and go. Several of them can be attached to the tank tread flat bed which it driven by the shuttle you see in front of the treads. Beside the storage area is the mechanics bay full of various droids he built and all the tools he needs to keep the squad up and running. The upper level features a tactical room with computers and view screens. Mechanical room/hallway, access to the stolen AT-ST, and a medical bay. The far end of the hanger is where the pilots are picked up and transfered to their vehicles. You can see the opening to the hallway that goes to the mess hall and their berrics. Now for the pics...

dude if you dont win that contest then the people voting are bloody blind... the detail in the Dio is sensational!!! it such a busy base of operations, i hate to imagine them packing up an moving if the imperials found there location, loving the floor detail and all the racks, and i also notice all the containers you made awhile ago, if i could i would vote 100 times just to make sure you won with all the hard work you put into this, you deserve it!!

:o!!! Amazing!! I am truly left speechless by the detail and size of this diorama. Love the paint scheme, the layout and all the custom bits and pieces you've added around the place. Superb. My favourite would have to be that LED light....so envious!!

You'll definitely win!! Whats the prize if you win?

TCC said. That dio is amazing, and so well done with so much to capture with the eyes all at once.

Man I wish I had the space, the balls and the skills to make these bad boys.

Awesome Job Luke!!!

Thanks guys it was a labor of love! haha Now to catch up on a few questions...it is 3 1/2ft. x 8 ft. but it breaks down pretty good. I hope to leave it set up a few more days, as long as the wife doesn't throw me out, to set up a few different scenes and photograph. If anyone has request of what they would like to see as far as figures and vehicle next let me know.  The prize for the contest is $500.  Yes there are custom Rebel Technicians as well as many other custom figures, vehicles, etc, etc. The led light is from my 16 yr old son's old game boy. The rebel Symbol fell off of a pair of scissors that came in a rebel art set from years ago. If I missed anything just let me know.

I don't know that I have ever seen as detailed a custom creation as this. I don't see much that is standard, everything has your touch on this. I would love to see a few X-Wings in this getting ready to go into battle! Awesome, just awesome work, on our front page.

OMG, LE, I can't wait to get home and see this on the bigger screen! There are just too many details to take in with just one casual look. My favrite shot is of the one tech wiping down the windshield on your ground vehicle's cockpit.
Just stunning work, buddy. I'll bet that you haven't slept for a month putting this together. What a wonderful day to be a shipyarder this is!

You should customize that into the Corillian transport it originally was, I forget the name, YT-1300 or soemthing, with the cargo containers on top and all... man, that thing looks tiny compared to the Xwing and dio, lol

Well it has been a while since I have done any diorama work. The last project was a fairly big one and I have started on a little dio that is not SW but should be pretty "cool" none the less. My wife collects these Leftin Christmas Village pieces, little ceramic houses that light up . Now she has seen me make so many things over the years she says " why don't you make me  a snow covered village diorama? You can make everything else so I want a diorama to display my houses on the mantle." My first thought was this could be great practice to follow up with a Hoth dio! So I had her set up the houses like she wanted to display them and did a quick drawing of my idea. She loved it and said please press on! I said I am not helping you with those fake nails! haha but seriously she liked it so I went out to the shop and grabbed a few sheets of styrofoam. By the end of the night I had the ideas roughed out and my basic elevations set. Here are a few WIP pics of what will be one of my biggest projects.

A word of warning, Leftin Christmas Village houses are HAUNTED!!!!

We had one and the cat freaked when my wife put it on display (hissed at it and totally freaked), after that all the electrical appliances in the room began to fail..I threw it out and it managed to fall out of the rubbish bin when the bin men came, so when I returned home it was sitting on our drive....

I'm usually not one who believes in ghosts , but this thing freaked me out....

Thanks for the great comments guys. Jules that story is too much! That is kind of scary! Luckily we have not had any haunting situations with ours...yet. I have now drawn some rocks on the train tunnels and etched them in with a wood burner. It is trickt trying to keep the lines thin, I plug it in for about 20 seconds then unplug and etch while it is not too hot.I will get a few more WIP pics later today.

Thanks Jay. I have been working hard at this each evening arfter work. First I drew the rock shapes I wanted with a sharpie then etched them with a wood burner.  I have also done some more carving to make snow drifts and coated some of it with wood glue.  In the pics below the yellow pieces are the ones with glue setting up. Now, there is an "easter egg" in the picture. Can you find a Star Wars set piece in these photos?

Thanks guys and glad to get everyone in the spirit! I have been slaving away at this every night and have made some good progress. If anyone is wondering how much this is costing me, all the styrofoam was free, my mom works at lowes and it used to protect refridgerators. The glue was $14 and the 6 razor blades were $2 and I spent $6 on white paint. I guess this is actualy another trash to treasure creation. all the styrofoam was free, my mom works at lowes and it used to protect refridgerators.

My wife would SO disown me!!  My piles are bad enough already, but if I had someone feeding me refrigerator packaging on a regular basis.... :o

Oh, and may I say you have done some WONDERFUL things with all that free trash your mom has lovingly dumped on you!  (my dad's girlfriend saves me styrofoam, too, and my aunt saves me those neat little Crystal Light tubes...)  ;D

L.E., that is absolutely stunning!  Beautiful down to every detail.  I'm not even kind of kidding when I say that you could easily make some GOOD money on the side doing this kind of thing for other people.  Apparently, a current trend going on throughout America is for people to hire others to decorate for them.  To hire someone to create a custom Winter Wonderland like this?  I'm betting you could make Christmas money and then some without any difficulty!

Thanks for the kind words guys. CS78, come on over, bring the eggnog, I have the little something extra to mix in. Jay, haha, you are right, maybee a custom figure at this scale is in order. Clint, thanks buddy, and yes we are hosting a holiday meal for our family and friends. Shawn, Lux, Doc, Ron, and JM I am glad you guys like the set up and thanks for the great replies! Pat, funny you mentioned decorating for others. That is exactly what I told the wife I needed to start doing. She wants to send pics to our local TV ststion and the paper to try and drum up some of this type of work for next year. Also we went to our local mall to see a train dio set up in HO scale. As I was looking at the awesome little world they had created she was telling the operators, "Oh you should see the things my husband makes." "Do you guys buy all these little houses and sets? He could make all of this out of household trash and styrofoam!" They got a good laugh and were intrigued at the same time. Then I met them and talked about my early days of collecting Lionel trains and that I still have my dad's Lionel set from the 50's. Needless to say they want to see some of my work and I am invited to their next meeting for their club.

If you can believe it, this is just one section of our holidat display. You can say we are a bit obcessed with decorating for the season and there is quite a bit more going on in our home. If you are interested/can handle more pics I will take a few of the other displays we have going on.

Hello all, I am resurrecting this thread that I have not posted in for almost a year! I have some thing I have been working on that I have not had time to photograph but hope to make time this weekend. I am redoing my shelves in my office to be more diorama oriented and not just have hundreds of figures lined up. So keep an eye on this space over the next week!

Thanks everyone! Yes Brian, I do prefer to display everything with some type of Diorama setting if I can.  Tom all I did was look at screen caps to figure out the design. Cut them out of styrofoam and hot glue + screw the pieces together. I covered everything with joint compound used for dry wall, let it dry, then sanded a bit. It kept cracking in various parts so I then coated it in wood glue. After that dried I spray painted it white then followed with tan allowing some of the white to show through. I still have to weather and dry brush it along with all the greeblies and details you see in the film. She has a way to go and I have all the Tatooine residents chomping at my heels!

Well, I was not all the way happy with my wall texture on this set so I am redoing it. I sprayed the existing set up with orange peel then used a matte sealer. After that it was painted creme and highlighted with tan.

Then I gave it a yellow/tan wash.

Now I will do a bit more weathering and make some greeblies.

Thanks again guys for the great comments. Looks like I have sold this one so I will make another for myself in the next few weeks. I have some new design ideas after doing this one and watching ANH and freeze framing the streets scenes. I also want to build the outside of the Cantina that will connect directly to inside scenes. More of that will come into play soon. For now I have started something else, Laser cut Death Star panels!

Spry,

What color paint did you use on the wall panels?

I bought a set of those wall panels and painted mine a blue/grey color - almost a Star Destroyer blue type color, since my photonovel deals mostly inside the Executor. But that blue color wouldn't work at all for a Death Star diorama/playset. Your grey looks good.

I absolutely love these laser cut wall panels, and am seriously thinking of making a mold of three or four different types of panels so I can make some resin cast wall panels.

DAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! That is what I am doing! LOL I tried to get more and he just doesn't answer emails. People are begging for more and he won't sell them. I have asked for his permission to cast these after I modify a few to be screen accurate. I am also building the small red control panels you see everywhere and casting those.  Oh yea the paint is Krylon Grey Primer.

Ha ha, that stuff is like liquid gold! You spray anything with Grey Primer and it makes a great background piece.

Can't wait to see more updates!

Great project. These will look so good once finished and lit up, i am sure of it. I recentlly put my set together and this is trully an awesome product. I am really looking forward to seeing your casts of these and how the addition of your switch, will make these look.  I too have been bugging the guy to sell me one of his Carbon freezing chamber sets,(floor grid and steps) but he is too busy at the moment. I am eagerlly keeping an eye on this build on how it looks finished.
Looks good so far.

HAHA! You guys are too kind. Glad everyone is enjoying this build. I have spent 4 hrs working on the final details before i send them out to be cast. Let me tell you, I got really tired of those super small styrene bits that needed to be added.

Painted

Next I removed the verticle flat panels that sink in and glued in a zip tie, then backed it with thin cardboard as you wont see it. The panel on the left is the a stok piece and is upside down to show the difference.

I sent him an email in December of last year practically begging for both sets for Christmas gifts. Either he had two sets available or he cut me two. Plus he threw in a few floor pieces from the Millennium Falcon. Your "zip tie" fix is awesome!! I've seen someone over at Rebelscum make some wall panels using a Scrapbooking printer/plotter and thin sheets of styrene. I don't own one of those high dollar plotters, but I figure for the cost I could make me more wall panels by simply using resin cast. I've got this idea for a 3-3/4 scale Palitoy meets Lego style Death Star, and I want to make resin casts of the wall panels for this playset. But it's probably something that will end up being on the back burner till next year.

Oh and don't think I'm not going to "borrow" that zip tie modification you made. That just made it even better!

Thanks Jason. I do have that panel but have not used it yet. Now the problem is I have been talking to MR. Lazer and he plans to get back into production and will be selling these again. So he has asked me NOT to cast and offer these for sale. So my casting is on hold, for now. I want to honor his request as long as he actualy makes these available again. If he doesn't I may be casting these anyway. I feel mine are different from his now even though I started with his creation. Mine will also cost more as I have done all the work for you and casting will cost more than MDF board. I still plan to sculpt the control panel and offer those for sale. Not sure what the future holds at this point, I will finish my dio but the panels won't be for sale from me at this point. Feel free to chime in amd let me know what everyone thinks about this situation.

Shiney huh?

Now for something completely different. I sold my old background walls for the Rebel Base so I want to scratch build a new one. It will be a generic base, not from a film, that can serve many purposes. I want it to have elements we have seen in various hangar bays/keep with traditional SW design. Below are the first WIP pics and I would love to hear some feedback. Do the purple girders look too real life like or are they OK? I kinda like how they break up the wall.

The purple girders look fine.  It's probably the color that's weirding you out.   Once everything is painted, you won't even question.  Can't wait to see what it looks like finished!

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys. I went thru all my fodder bins looking for large pieces to create wall textures like you see in hangarbays with little success. I have some great pieces for random machinery though! So I went shopping at 2 thrift stores then lowes with great success. Also hit the dollar tree to se if they had any other choices for lights. BIG SCORE! I bought 7 of these awesome led lights because that is all they had. I will be going back for more of these in a few days. This is how they look.

My camera battery died after these pics. I stayed up late and started cutting pieces to fit and gluing them together. I am about half way done with the back wall at this point and am pretty happy with how it is turning out. The plan is to take some pics durring lunch today to catch up with the progress. Stay tuned!

OK, this is what I have so far. I got 100 stainless steel coffee filter circles from a friend that makes washable filters. Cut them down and hot glued them to the back of the paver edging used at the bottom. Then I painted 2 different size dowel rods and glued them to the back of the edging. There is just enough light to see it thru the screen. Then I cut all the pieces I had decided on to fit the angled sides of the girders. I don't want to go any highier until I decide on another holding tank and do all the plumbing. The 3/4 inch PVC will also be run across the top of the back wall. I am trying to decide on colors to use so I have painted a few pieces black and some grey. I am thinking many shades of those colors and some silver for the most part. I also need to go study some of Hangarbay94's wall textures for some ideas. So, on with the pics!

Spry - do you know what that orange twin blob thing was originally?

I got one of those same lights and love it for this type work!  I plan on getting more, just like you did, for pretty much the exact same use.  Dang you.

I found a tanker-truck toy at one of the local cheap/dollar-stores and was planning on doing something very similar to what you've done with yours.  Dang you again.

I had another idea this week, based on something new I found.  I'm waiting to see if you have the same id- no, no I'm NOT gonna wait.  I'm gonna get the bloody thing and get to work on it next week, if all goes well.  HA!  Take that, Mr. Idea-Filcher!!

UGH !!!!!!!
So freakin jealous.  I've been collecting random stuff for years to build something like this.  I just don't have the time/workspace yet.  But i think your hitting the nail on the head with the look.  It's perfect, it could be a hangar on any random capital ship, or even ground base within the Rebellion.  I thot of making a hangar/base and giving it the look like it was carved out of a meteor.  Think of Hoth but brown instead of white  ;)
Keep up the great work and can't wait to see finished product.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Doc, I know what you mean. It happens to me too! I'll be holding on to a prime piece of fodder and someone else will use it. The orange piece has Kinex stamped on it.

Impurge, I feel your pain brother. If I had not sold the old rebel base dio this one would have not been started.

Over the weekend I made some covers for the shelf brackets, made the wall details from the second girder to the corner, made the new side wall and a entire new bay to the right courtesy of a mirror. Then I used 2 alcohol bottles and some PVC pipe to make fuel cells and plumbing. This is just the first series of pipes, there will be a few more. Had to snap a few pics to document the progress.

Barry, great to see you are back my friend, thanks for the kind words. I hope you and your boss are ok now, but be warned, you may not want to look at this next round of photos.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. This project has been a lot of fun and will be for a long time to come. No telling when I will be done with this as I could see myself adding bits and pieces for the next year or more. I like the way it looks now since I added the sheet of hardboard for the floor. It is a full 24 inches wide so I can display X-Wings without them against the back wall. Only need to do a few more things before the main structure is finished. I will add cables and smaller piping over time. So here is the update of my work over the weekend and thank goodness I had some ground crewman and fleet troopers help with the process of stocking this hangarbay.

This is something really special, an excellent showcase for your skills and imagination. A classic piece of work from one of the best customisers out there, I've really enjoyed seeing how this has come together and the latest set of images look so realistic.

Thanks again my friends. There will be more pics along the way of various vehicles throught the completion of this thing. I have been figuring out parts for the upper walls and ceiling and will be painting those. I should have an update at the end of every weekend if things go as planned. So this is what 2 X-Wings look like in here.

I love the fact that you turned a bunch of pipes, metal grilles, and and fiddly bits into this. It is an AWESOME hangar.
I still think that the mirror is the best part you added. Kinda gives the impression that you could travell through it into a second hangar.
Great work.

Jay, your comment is so perfect. Just wait, I plan to do a video showing a special feature for that scenario.

Thanks so much M4KER1, XTS, drod26, Tamer and benjani_1976!

So last week I was contemplating what I should have next to this hangarbay. I want some type of briefing room to store atleast 30 of my pilots. A storage room/repair shop to hald around 25 droids, and I would love to fit in a Pilots locker room. So this is the begining of mock ups for the briefing room.

I like this set up as it would be modular and removable. I may do like Spookymufu did with his Echo Base diorama and have these sections removable to enlarge the hanger or plug in another dio when I want.

Then I moved that room aside and started figuring out more machinery/bits for the ceiling and back wall. Thank the maker I had some help from these hard woorking Rebels.

OMG LE that breifing room is sick! Is that a milk crate section behind the pilots? Now that i am building them i am paying more attention to the materials others are using so I can keep an eye for the stuff I need to build with. Great work again! Some of the shots look like they are from the movies or could be.

I notice a Xarcce Huwlla if I´m not mistaken?! Being a pilot fiend myself I´d like to know what head you used, or did you sculpt it yourself?

I´d love to make one of those myself

Thanks again everyone!

Shamanlogray, yes, this is the majority of my X-Wing pilots. I still have more Snowspeeder, A-Wing, B-Wing and Y-Wing pilots.

Thanks so much Shawn!

Tankster, that mirror is my favorite part too!

Thanks Chad! The piece behing the pilots is a stackable shelf system from the thrift store for $2. I have about 8 more pieces that size. A milk crate panel is another great idea and would have a bit more texture than this. I bet it would work fine or even better.

Darth MsBane, thanks and you are correct. The Xarcce head sculpt is from my friend xDarth Sinisterx.

M4ker1, you are right and I knew I would use this table one day as soon as I saw it!

Ray thanks for compliment, you have made my day. That is the look I am going for with this project. ;D

I would say it is about 85% complete at this point and I can't stop taking pictures of various scenes stored in my mind. For starters, I have applied a flat sealer to the following figures. Some are old and some are new head swaps. I wish I had a few more RFT's if anyone can help.

Is that a She-Hulk "We Can Do It" poster at the side of the Hangar bay?? It's either She-Hulk or a Green Twi'lek. I think we need a close up of that photo! There is sooooo much going on in this diorama it's amazing. And I totally love that custom Y-Wing with the Rebel insignia on the side of the cockpit!!

Spry,

This diorama is just so awesome. I'm looking over this thing and I am just amazed at the parts you've used to make such an mind blowing diorama!! I've one question for you, though. If you don't mind revealing one of your "trade secrets." In the picture below, on the left side are these two white barrel type things on the wall. Can we get a close up picture of those and maybe what you used to build them? Thanks.

I haven't been on here lately,or as much as I would like, and that has caused me to miss this diorama. First I'll say something that's been said 100 times already, and that's how awesome this thing is. I truly wish I had this Hanger Bay to display my figures in. You've done what Hasbro,or any toymaker for that matter hasn't done, and that's build a realistic Star Wars base,(playset doesn't describe how awesome this thing is). This reminds me of the first Iron Man movie, where Obadiah says to the scientist ,"Tony Stark built this in a cave, with nothing but a few scraps!",then the scientist says "I'm sorry,I'm not Tony Stark.",only in this situation you're Tony Stark, your workshop is the cave, and the people at Hasbro are the scientists. ;D

Tom, thanks, you know how much I love it too! For those that don't know, Tom started this vehicle and was not sure what direction to take. I talked him into trading it to me and letting me devellope the design further. Thanks so much buddy for letting her go. It is one of my all time favorite custom vehicles.

Thanks again for the kind words friends. Jason I have no trade secrets, just things I have learned over time and I love sharing this stuff with others. They were available with Chap Mai vehicles a few years ago. They may show up in Big Lots stores as we get closer to the Holidays. Here is a crappy pic of the vehicle they came with, I have 3 of them so far. If you look closely you can also find the engine to the chopper in the diorama.

JediMindtrix, thanks you my friend. That is a great analogy and one that makes me proud. Hope you can find more time to stop in our little corner of the galaxy.

Now I have another update! Nothing you have not seen before. Just better photos showcasing the Vehicle Maintenance Stantion. I am also thinking about adding a base under the legs to make it about 1/2 inch taller and a bit more sturdy.

I told you I would be back soon with more photos right!?! People keep mentioning a mirror, not sure what you are talking about. ;D So for the second update today I am showing the other side of the Hangarbay. This is where the major vehicle upgrades, maintenance and even vehicle construction takes place. You can see several tool boxes, supplies, storage contaiiners, vehicle parts and many other things are stored along the back wall. As requested there are several close up shots of all the different elements that bring the dio together. Get ready for photo overload...

Holy smokes that is just incredible!! I don't have the space available right now for a diorama/display like this, but I will definitely glean some ideas from this for maybe something modular that can be broken down!

There is one thing missing from this diorama though, and I'm not talking about a kitchen sink either.

You need one of those tubes hanging from the ceiling with the attachment on the end for loading and unloading Astromechs from the fighters!!

This is incredibly well done. Just the detailing in the architecture alone is mind boggling, I keep scanning the pics, trying to figure out what you used in some of the parts. I can pic out some things here and there, but it is really the overall build that is so effective. I want to do something similar just to display aircraft, and this gives me so many ideas. Fantastic work. What did you use to do the vehicle maintenance scaffolding? it looks so simple but I can't place the parts.

He he he he!! Not spying, maybe I'm just psychotic ummm... I mean psychic! I had an idea of using an R4 (cone) B.A.D. head for the actual "suction cup" thing at the end of the hose that attaches to the Astro droid's head.

Depends on which one he builds. In ANH the droid lift tube looks more like a small suction cup. However, in TESB the droid lift tube looks more like an R4 (cone) dome.

I am in the process of finishing up some operational equipment for the maintenance and construction bay. Also playing around with a removable second level and storage racks for speeders or more storage bins. I will take some WIP pics of this aspect later today. For now I am proud to say the members of X-Wing Rogue Squadron and several Rebels stopped by yesterday for emergency repairs to their vehicle that was damaged durring a mission.

Spry,

Speaking of fodder for the Droid Lifter thing (is there an "official" name for it?), didn't the old Kenner maintenance mini-rig thing come with some corrigated hose with a suction cup on the end? Either that or the hose from the Kenner/POTF2 E-Web cannon could work.

Do you notice the 2-dimensional Y-Wing "cut out" in the background? A quick shot on the screen and you'll think that's a fully operable prop. Nope, it's just a 2-D mock cut out.

OK, I have built the astromech lift but not photographed it yet. I have photograped the crane I built along with a few new removable elements that will add variety to the bay. This being the maintenance and construction bay. They will be building a Y-Ugly in the near future now that we have a crane available.

I feel the same way!! I don't know if I have the space for a diorama/display as big as this and I don't have a room dedicated for my collection yet. However, as usual, LE's customs have motivated me to build something similar. I've been looking for any and every little thing to use as filler.

I'm telling you LE is at the top of my list for favorite customizer/diorama builders!!

BlackThorn thanks for stopping by and I would love to see you build a hangarbay to display vehicles. It's just a matter of being a scavenger and collecting up bits for a while then you are ready to go.

Tamer I agree! It is just a matter of having parts to work with and letting your imagination run wild. Well I do slow down in the winter and can be held on retainer for travel and diorama building. ;)

Wow Jason, that is a statement that blows me away. Thanks buddy, I am glad if I have inspired anyone in any way. There are so many that have inspired me and I just like sharing with friends who are passionate about there art form.

LE

Let me give you an example of how I feel about your work that few beyond you and I will probably relate to.

Do you remember back in the late 1980s when Kevin Jones was still considered an "amatuer," but all the pros would come running to watch his contest runs? You can actually find a video of Kevin Jones on youtube where you see all these guys running to watch Kevin's performance. That's the way I feel anytime I see you've updated one of your threads! I'm like, "YES! New stuff!"

So, with that...

You are the Kevin Jones of customizing/diorama building!!

Jason, again you are too kind. Kevin Jones you say, WOW! He was one of my favorite flatlanders! So inventive he didn't ride BMX he was an artist that used a bike as an extention of himself. Again youhave made my day with this comparison. Now off to watch the likes of Kevin, RL Osborn and Dennis McCoy for a few hours. What I would do for some MKS graffite X pedals right now! OK it is over, when the sun comes up I am going outside to see if I still have a decade in me...just showed a kid who was boss with a tail whip in the streets 2 months ago while on a quick work break.

Sorry it has been so long since I commented here. I am in the middle of several commissions while I don't have much work in the real world going on.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It's not that I have that much room, I just really wanted to do this so I dedicated 1 shelf.

Jay thanks so much for such high praise.

Glorbes, that is a great compliment coming from you. I have often refered to your scratch builds and am a major fan of your art.

Ron, thanks my friend!

Thanks Brian! You know mw, I had to have one! I love the loading scene starting the Battle of Yavin. I want to include some things that you see in the films to add realism.

Now for a bit of an update. I have been planning a Death Star project for a while now. I showed a quick set up of the panels and flooring a few pages back. As soon as I can finish the figure commissions I will be returning to the Death Star and pretty much at the same time a very iconic scene from ROTJ featuring a certain bounty hunter, Sith Lord and a few Heros. I hope to have updates here more regularly then. I guess I could snap a pic of the amazing piece I got in the mail from Mr. Lazer to hold you over, or should I wait and share when I get it set up?

OK here is what I am planning with the Death Star. It will be built in separate units that will all fit together and be displayed on a floor or on my shelf. I hope to make all future dioramas this way. Here is a pic of what I have set up to be the first display.

I have always done playset style dioramas and am really torn on this one. I am wanting to go for total accuracy and skip the play features so not sure at this point. I hope to compromise and do both. The detention block will be on the top level and I will build the trash compacter on the bottom level. I am thinking the red control room will be beside the trash compacter as it is about the right size to have both scenes end even with the detention block. The next step is to build the box that will hold these scenes and plan the lighting.

I have also ordered the Bespin Carbon Freeze Chamber from Mr Laser. This is one amazing piece of work and the only way to accurately portray this scene. Well let me just give you some photos rather than explain...

I have huge plans for this one! It too will be in a box so I can move it around/display it anywhere. I plan to add 3 inches to the bottom of the floor and stairs so I can simulate the Han being lowered into the hole and have room for lights. Trying to be totally accurate on this build so it is going to take a while. Sadly one of the tabs on the next to last step was broken so I have to wait on a new one before I go much further. Though my first step is to add the depth to the floor so I will be toying with that while I wait.

Thanks guys and yes, this entire dio will be lit. This one will be a slow process but I tell you, I am dying to jump on the Bespin dio. I have been studying screen caps from ESB and am excited to get ready and bring all those details to life. I think this is one of the toughest scenes from the saga to recreate, so wish me luck.

I am also looking for a second set of the trash base from the compacter set. Don't care what set it is I just want the trash compacter scene to be much deeper. I don't want the figures, just the base.

Thanks Shawn! I was talking to Darth Daddy 2 days ago about taking notes/building a note book of what was done for each figure/diorama we have made. I said that is why I post so many WIP pics at the Yards. Anyone, myself included, can go thru my threads and see the build for everything I have made. As a matter of fact, I am doing just that right now. I have been commissioned to make several of my Jabba's Palace figures for another collector. So I am looking at how I did everything in my figure thread to remake these guys. Looks like I may get real busy then buddy, you are the second person to mention that they may want me to make them one of these.

Reviving this thread! I did some cleaning in the lab and changed up a section of my shelving with an Indiana Jones display. My Raven Bar diorama was dying to be removed from it's box so I set it up in such a way I can also use the back for the Streets of Cairo scene. I have also been working on casting a few vintage Indy items that are for this set I built a good while ago. I am so glad to be casting and making these parts customizable after all these years.

So first I set this up on the desk just o work things out.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It is great to hear from some Indy fans here and really glad you dropped by Lance! I have a few Indy related projects going on, more on that soon.Clint, I cast the stands and the fruit from the vintage playset. A friend let me borrow the parts. I am trying to decide if I will cast the large baskets that Marion jumps in or just scratch build a few. They are going to eat up some mold material being my concern. I mocked up a scratch built one wrapped in bandaging product I got at walmart. The only problem is having a working lid, but I may not worry about having one. Barry, thanks, great to hear from you my friend.

Spry I can't belive I have missed this Indy dio, I totally love what you have done here and your work is always amazing. If I were you I would cast the large baskets even if you don't place Marion in them they would really add to the realism of the dio and I can't wait to see what Indy dios you have coming.

Great work! Love the colours! Very clever all the little cast details, fruit etc! Loads of work obviously went into this! How will you do the floor? Sand in a baking tray? Fine grain sand paper? Or more likely something more ingenious, cos sand can make a real mess! Lol!

Thanks guys and great to hear from you Ron. Thanks so much your words mean a lot as you are the master of Indy customs. SLR, glad you are enjoying my little set up. Yes, the small details are my favorite part. I am still working on a few more for this scene. I have a roll of griptape I will apply to a 1/4 inch thick MDF base and paint tan. I hope to keep it simple as this space will change over time. If it doesn't look good enough I will just add some glue and sand over the griptape. I will add some pics here soon of a few other pieces for this one and another project.

Thanks and yes the long odd shaped building blocks are so fun to work with and look great. I can't remember the name but someone on fb knew what they were and told me the name. I need to find the pic they commented on and I will let you know. They have a web site to order from but I found mine at a thrift store.

Well, time to dig this thread out of the 3rd page of Diorama post. So, I have caved on the 6 inch line I said I would not buy and am cherry picking the line for figures I want to make displays for. I started with a Cantina booth shadow box as I was repainting figures and ran into a few snags. It is really heavy! I have rebuilt it in styrofoam and learned a lesson after some experimenting so I am still modifying it. I also sculpted chairs for the scene and have now cast 4 of them with great success.

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7343/12236444314_c8ae545d00.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/87594157@N05/12236444314/)

While I was waiting on casting material to arrive I was invited to show my work in a sci-fi art show locally. The display space is pretty small so I need some small dioramas to display my figures. I decided the "Ron Hemble style" displays were the way to go. So I started another diorama with several scratch built parts seen below in the pics.

I got back in here to just view this and that GNK again this morning. This looks like it walked right off the movie set.

Man, I hope they make some Battle of Hoth 6 inchers. If they do I would like to formall request a commission along these same lines as this mini-dio. I think it is just a great way to show off the characters.

I am so jealous of Star Wars builders....ANYTHING can be added to any scene. Unless you are making something specific, any doodad or bauble counts.

Great work here as always Luke! I may not post much, but I lurk!

Hey buddy that dio is astounding! Nice work.

I especially love the GONK. The thing looks as if it were a sideshow piece or something. The build on that is pure genius. You should keep that one for the dio and build another one (un-painted) and cast the parts. Sell it as a kit. I love it!

Also I'd like to see how you put together that up-right ventilation shaft.

Wow, has it been that long?

Anyhew, you dio looks fantastic. that plaster and paint work and doo dads are fantastic. Ah what Hasbro would have on their hands if they even made half a dio like this. I wish you could go into factory mode and just crank these out. They would sell by the thousands.

Off to share.

Thanks Shawn! I have no clue why Hasbro doesn't see the need for dioramas. Oh well, that is why I hope to offer more dios for sale.

Up next, Han in Carbonite display from Jabba's Palace.

Folks it was awesome to see these in person. The work just shined so much better looking at it first hand. The Han in Carbonite Dio was perhaps my second. I just really liked the Sandtrooper with Gonk Droid Dio. That Gonk was just over the top. I can't ever see Hasbro doing one in that scale better! Off to share.

There is not a single one of your creations that isn't amazingly impressive.  The Han in Carbonite dio has got to be the best---in this scale or 3.75"---that I've seen.  Simply outstanding!

I would have loved to gauge the crowds reaction to that hanging Han one.
Man, pretty stuff, spry.
I love the color palett that you use. It is part of your signature.
