Welcome to my Vehicle thread! I still have lots of vehicles over in my main custom thread, but I thought I would start a new vehicle thread here which will contain all my new vehicles. I'll slowly move over the others.

The Errant Venture was an Imperial II-class Star Destroyer captured by the smuggler Booster Terrik. It is only privately-owned Imperial-class Star Destroyer in the known Galaxy, distinguished by its unusual red coloring.

nice! i loved the x-wing novels
-
not a huge photochop, but I was making breakfast for the kids at the same time...
"The Story"
The Errant Venture is spotted by a probe droid above the planet Corinn IV in the Ella System. For months the ship has not been seen and the New Republic is worried that Booster or the EV may have fallen to the enemy. Wedge, an old friend of Booster as well as Corran Horn assemble Rouge Squadron in order to investigate.
-
nice, is that a micromachine?
there were a couple old 4-6inch imperial star destroyer die cast models back in the good old days... I've ran accross some of them on e-bay.
-
cool story. Nice ship!
-
nice, is that a micromachine?
Yes, I had an extra in a parts bin and just got the itch to paint it the other night. Total time was about 60 minutes. The longest part was waiting for the red base coat to dry. =)
Thanks!
-
Here is an update of the CEC Old Republic Cruiser. I have the base coat down and am now going to paint the spine. Then need to determine best highlight color to add to some of the panels.
Thanks!
-
nice sten, look forward to seeing this develope mate
-
Looking forward to seeing it done
The Errant Venture to me was a ship similar to the Falcon, where it had a personality of it's own in the novels. Booster Terrik was another cool char and the ship just fit him well.
I have not gotten into this line of Star Wars at all but you have me intrigued as to what can be done with them,
-
Oooh, Stenhunter,
This is a great post, not only am I looking forward to your ship getting painted, I also loved the first image and accompanying story.
Great stuff.
-
I like the start of that cruiser, Sten. I was thinking some field grey panels might look cool. It's kind of a greenish grey.
-
Hey, Sten - what is that cruiser? Action Fleet, Titanium, Snap-Tite, or...? I've got a tiny li'l Snap-Tite kit out in the shop that I keep thinking about building, but I don;t like the stock colors. But I can't quite justify one being owned by a bounty hunter...
-
i'd hazard a guess at action fleet

It's Action Fleet (about 6-8 inches in length). I picked up about a half dozen of them (2 B-wings, Snow Speeder, Cruiser, and a Y-wing) at a church sale last year for $2 (the entire bag). I was thinking of painting it to match my 209th Heavy Armor Mechanized Combat Team. Kind of like their own private dropship.

Going to paint the engine area today at lunch.
-
Painted the engine housing areas the other day at lunch I'm going to work on the sensor cluster next, and plan out where my panel highlights will go. Then just have to re-touch, a few dry brush coats, re-touch and then do a nice wash!
-
Those clones are looking very sweet, as is their ship! I think I'm gonna have to be on the lookout for those Action Fleet ships!
-
The cruiser is shaping up nicely, Sten.
Man, there is just something about that McFett fig that I really like. I'm glad I have a couple extra of those.
-
only thing I hate about that mcquarie fett is both of the ones I got they fell apart at the torso joint. The peg that inserts into the body just doesn't hold tight enough. The little hidden belly gun door always falls off too.... not to mention his feet have no articulation....
but the helmets are nice. I like the helmets... and the flame effect.
-
Yes I love the look of the McFett's but I wish they were put together a little better. I should have some new pics of the cruiser tonight. I have been taking a few days off from customizing =)
-
Some new WIP pics of the Cruiser. I will now go back and do some touch up on the tan/grey to fix some of the over paint from the blue.
Then I plan to go in and do some detail work in another light grey to make some of the panels pop...then I'll do some dry brushing, some distressing all followed by a nice wash.
I really think the detail will begin to pop out in the next few colors.
-
Whoah! I like that blue. Yes, the grey on the panels sounds intreuging.
This one is going to be wrapped up before you know it.
-
Latest update, I have one more dry brush to apply and then I'll be done.
-
Wow!! that Looks awesome SH!! loving the detail on that girl... much better then the original!! loving it mate Great Weathering buddy ;D
-
yaay! sten we have republic cruisers not only that, we have CUSTOM republic cruisers (well i have temporarily :()
-
Really looking good now! Can't wait to see the final product.
-
Sten, that did turn out nice. Thanks for all of the wip pics. I will throw up your finished cruiser onto the front page in a while.
-
This is making me want to pull that snap-tite pocket-kit out and give 'er a go...
-
I finished it up this morning. However, it's raining like B here today, so I wont be able to get any good "Glory" shots. I'll have finished pics up by Thursday when the sun comes out again. =)
I had a lot of fun on this "mini" sized project. It was a good escape from doing clones or larger vehicles. I think the amount of detail in the Action Fleet was just right, and the colors and techniques used worked well together to bring out that detail.
Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement through out the WIP. ISY is by far the best place for customizers in the galaxy!
I thought I would list out the paint and technique used.
Washed original Action Fleet Cruiser to remove mold release agent from factory
Painted on a primer coat of Krylon flat grey
Painted on base under coat of Polly Scale "Yello Grey" (2 coats)
Painted Landing gear Polly S "Night Black" Dry brushed Polly S "Stainless Steel"
Applied same application to side superstructures
Applied same application to main antenna dish, finished with a dry brush of Polly S "Bronze"
Applied same application to rear engine mounts
Applied Polly S "Bronze" to turbine area of engine over Polly S "Stainless Steel" base coat
Applied Polly S "Dragon Blue" to select panels along ship
Applied Polly S "Hobgoblin Gray" to select panels along ship
Applied dry brush of Polly S "Light Grey" to entire ship to bring out high lights
Applied Polly S "Night Black" wash across entire ship, making sure to soak up overage with a paper towel
Applied two dry brush top coats of Polly S "Yellow Gray" across entire ship to mute the black wash some and make some of the raised detail pop again.
As you can see, even the smallest of projects can take some effort. I think I spent about 3 hours total on the ship not counting drying times.
Have a great day!
-
man that thing looks awesome finished up.
Inspired by you, I bought two huge lots of action fleet ships on e-bay last night... can't wait to get them and tear into em and do some repaints I've always been wanting to do!
-
yeah, another fan of Polly s paints!
-

Let the fleet building begin!! =)
-
amen brother, I got about 6 a-wings, 4 y-wings, 3 vader's ties, one interceptor, 3 jawa sandcrawlers, 3 imperial shuttles, and even got an imperial drop-ship shuttle. One of the harder pieces to find! (lol I bought both lots for what I have been looking at paying for just the drop-ship!).
theres a bunch of other miscelaneous pieces in there too so I can't wait to get it... probably will be a while though.
makes me want to dig out my old box of my collection and get them displayed!
-
Can't wait to see what you do with those A-wings and that drop ship!
-
the drop ship aint gonna get touched! lol.
with the action fleets I only customize extras... I'm a stickler about that. I collect them and open them for display (I open because if I collected mint in box I'd have to rebuy my entire collection I ammassed as a child... since I played with them all back then!). I will customize almost everything else that is in the lot though.
-
Looks great Sten Hunter.
-
Ok, I've been working on a new Custom Stealth Star Fighter. It is based off the Terminator Hunter seekers. Not a lot of modifications on the outside. Some extra winglets and some little grebbels on the bottom.
Here is PS concept of the color scheme, though it's a lighter color at the moment. (Primer grey)
I should have a better WIP pic later as I'm waiting for a layer of paint to dry =)
-
very nice, I can't wait to see more angles, I am unfamiliar with this ship is it in 3 3/4 figure scale?
-
what are you going to do with the pods from the sides...? .... if you don't have any plans for them... i'll take them off your hands.....
looks good though, how are you doing the cockpit?
-
Here's what I have so far.
Now comes all the detail, dry brushings, and washes!
As to the cockpit.. I haven't fully decided yet. I managed to get a GI Joe figure to fit, so I assume a clone would. However, there is not a lot of space up in there (i'll take a pic w/ and w/out fig in it later).
Who knows maybe it could make a good droid fighter?
-
aww your using the engine pods :(
lol it looks great. I originally got one for a droid gunship custom... but never have gotten around to it...
-
Wow, Sten, that is cool looking. It would make for a great droid fighter. Those engines would work for a racing pod custom fairly easily also. Keep us updated on this one.

Completed GAR Battle Suit. (Though this is really the AMP Suit from the new movie Avatar)
This is also my entry into the military vehicle contest.

Very nice, the detailing turned out fantastic. Very realistic.
-
looks amazing sten! very cool!
-
Ahh, I see the pilot now. Yep, Sten, the weathering is superb, buddy. I think you pulled off the mud stained look perfectly.
Very nice job.
-
Here is a nice video of the Suit, and some more pics of the pilot out in the sun.
-
Also some final detail shots out in the sun
-
WWWWOOOOOOOWWW, That is an awesome set of images, I love the outside shots...
You have done a really superb job of the weathering, I am stunned by it actually.
Amazing.
-
Thanks Jules!
-
That thing looks 10x better with paint on it.. good job!!! I like the Dust figure too, lol... so, you use those Joes for customs? I have probably 10 pounds of Joe parts.. you want them?
-
If he doesn't, then I think I could find them a good home... ;D
-
Awesome customs mate, really like the mech suit and custom stealth star fighter.
-

I love Joes =)
What type do you have? What would you want to part with?
-
WOW! This came out awesome Sten. The weathering came out perfect. Nice job on the whole thing.
-
I like this a lot! Everything. The detail is awesome. I would love to see them write some mechs into the new CW series. Off the the FP!
-
Great customs. Hope to see more!
-
If he doesn't, then I think I could find them a good home... ;D
I just sent him pictures.. posting here cause he told me he doesn't see the message thing up top all the time... ;) I'll let you know what he doesn't take, hopefully between the two of you can be rid of my old fodder.
-
were did u get that mech
-
were did u get that mech
its from the new "avatar" line of toys and figures.... they are available at TRU, not sure where else...
-
were did u get that mech
Target store. It's from the Movie Avatar and is called "The AMP Suit".
-
I can't wait to see Avatar. The mech suit looks awesome.
I'm also a big fan of the mech suit in District 9.
-
alright, working on another vehicle this week. I picked up the Avatar Scorpion Gunship. It's not a bad looking ship but I wish I could do more with it.
I'll get some stock photos of it up soon and then some primed photos as well. Hopefully today will be "warm" enough to do a base coat outside.
-
sten, would you mind doing a photo review of the dragon gunship before painting it? I'm debating buying one and would like to see several different shots of it, how it's made, and how fragile it is before deciding on buying it..
-
I am telling you. These Avatar toys are cool as all get out and that Mech just makes me think of ATAT mech squad. I can't wait to see what you do with this one. I keep hoping we see some figure size mechs in the new clone wars shows or the new live tv show.
-

ACK! I already put the base coat on it.. besides the best part about these avatar toys is the fact that they come IN PIECES which makes them awesome to paint before you assemble them in the end. However, I did take some photo's and I can review the item regardless of the color =)
The toy is 12 to 15 inches long and has a wingspan of about 12 inches. Here is a great thread on Terrordone with a comparison shot of the new Joe Heli Gunship.
http://www.theterrordrome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4996
The turbo fans rotate, and the four fans spin freely as well. It has two spring loaded missiles which really could look better or have been excluded.
Under some winglets in the front are some mounted cannons that turn side to side, but do not rotate up and down on their own.
Also, the forward looking FLIR/Camera pod does NOT rotate or move. I wish I had the time to fix that :\
The cockpit is a HUGE mess and needs a LOT of work. There is a small pilots chair at the back of the cockpit that looks like it could comfortably fit a FRODO character. The cool thing about the cockpit is that the front display/instrument panel area pivots up to allow you more access to the area. I found that this may be good only for CW style figs since they are slimmer and less bulky. Otherwise stick to the Avatar movie figures (though their are done poorly). I have a V vs. V Snake Eyes that may fit.... or I have a 25th anni Wild Bill that may.
The toy is molded of a nice olive green though I did notice that there were parts which had different tints of green. I assume this is because they were thinner than the larger parts.
Here is my current WIP gallery.
http://picasaweb.google.com/mypronmedia/RDAScorpionGunshipTheAvatarMovie#
I found a new primer that seems to be AWESOME and I would recommend everyone try it out. It's may by Krylon and comes in ULTRA Flat colors "Black, Tan and Olive" and is called "Camouflage". I've only been able to find it at Auto parts stores so far since apparently "hunters" use it to paint their stuff. It BONDS with plastic which is awesome and comes out great. (Check the wips)
Let me know if you need more info guys.. but overall I like the toy, I think it will come out nice with some little details added.
-
Looks awesome. A littel work and the things you were unhappy about with the item just go away.
Oh, and about them rattle can paints....
real rednecks been using dem for years.... with the same great results....
I personally have never tried them on toys.... well not them kinds....
-
lol drs comment cracked me up...
the ship looks good, can't wait to see what you do with it. I am still debating getting one. I'll probably wait for it to come down in price.... go on clearance. Which is what I'm waiting for the joe vehicles to do...
-
Fantastic work all round and those mech suits are awesome.
Ron
-
Nice.
-
I give you three wip pics of the scorpion..
-
Oh yeah, we need an Avatar fp news item today too so this will do nicely. Nice work guy. I really do enjoy these SW crossovers.
-
I like the color, Sten. This is going to look great.
-
theres not a single avatar toy at all here =\ except those from macdonalds' happy meals
-
That looks great. I'm looking at picking up 1 and converting it into a Star Wars Emergency Firespeeder seen in Episode III as Anakin lands the CIS ship on Coruscant. What are you planning to do with yours...attack., transport etc? It would look really good accompanying a Wookiee flyer though!!
-

For this one, I'm going to just try and do a nice re-paint to match the movie as close as possible. If this one goes well, I'll get another and convert it into something more. I want to capitalize on the movie release so I'm going as fast as I can :P
The next one I'll remove the seat, add some LED's and try to add some more detail.
-
Thta is looking sweet and look forward to seeing it complete.
Ron
-
Oh leds on a vehicle never heard of that idea before.
-
Oh leds on a vehicle never heard of that idea before.
I guess you havn't browsed through my vehicles thread then huh? ;)
can't wait to see what you do with a lighted version of the gunship sten, how much room is on the inside of the main fusolage shell? Would it fit two AA batteries or would it have to be something smaller?
-
I got to far into the repaint to put lights into this one. However, there looks to be a lot of space inside the main forward cockpit area. You could fit Double A's or even Triple A's in there. The hardest part is that the fuselage is glued VERY well.. and I didn't want to damage it after painting it to pry it apart.
However, if this one sells well, then I'll do the next one with LEDs for sure.
-
Ok, nearing completion! I want to apply some more subtle dry brushing in some spots. However, I think it looks very movie accurate.
I added some decals to the cockpit that I think add some to it rather than just a blank interior. Now comes the fun part and seeing if any of my figures can fit in it :P
Thoughts?
-
Looks awesome the paint apps and weathering are just perfect.
Ron
-
wow! That did turn out cool, Sten. Very movie accurate.
-
Looking good! I really like this ship and such a good movie. You have done a great job with it.
-
wow you did a great job, it looks much better now
-
ZOINKS! that is superawesome Sten! I love the weathering.
-
that looks great sten. Would you mind getting a shot of it standing next to some different figures for some reference in size?
did you find a pilot for it yet?
just a random thought, I watched DUNE (the ORIGINAL movie, from way back)... and it got me thinking about the "ornithopters" that they mention in the books. I always pictured them as something like this. They never realy describe them well in the book but they said it was like a giant mechanical dragonfly....
-
Yes I pictured the Dune vehicles with thumping wings.. and large bulbous eye canopy. I'll take a pic of it outside with some sun here soon and add some figs for comparison.
Thanks for all the kind words and feedback!
-
Nice vehicles especially the GAR.Keep up
the good work.
-
Hey guys, check Border's books if you have on near you... I followed up a lead and some have their Avatar stuff 1/2 off right now. They don't have the big stuff like the gunship/big dragon thing, but the one I went to had the Mech and the ATV and tiger like beast and horse and smaller winged animals... might be cool for SW diorama fodder. They also had the big and lil' figs...
Sorry, didn't know where to post this, but seeing Sten used a couple of the vehicles, I thought it was the best place to post. If there's an Avatar thread, feel free to post it there.
-
thanks!
I'll check it out tomorrow.. I need to pick up a pilot figure... and repaint it to look cool I guess. Also need to get off my ass and finish this gunship!! :\
-
Sten, I think you need some type of AT-AT/Tie Pilot. Perhaps something in white armor, but with grey or black uniform like on the IMPS part 1 (the gal that was spotting on top of the at-st).
-
Thanks Tamer,
I have a tie pilot from one of the comic packs. I'll see if it fits.
-
Once again an amazing vehicle sten.
-
I was unable to fit a tie pilot, Venom vs. Valor snake eyes.. or even a slim star wars figure in there....
I opted for a Sigma Six "small" figure which I had from the Joe gunship of almost the same design. I'll finish up painting him (as he has some neon green :P)
He fits perfect into it and even looks like he is to scale.
I also did some more weathering last night, and painted the cluster missile cases. For a final touch I cut down some "gold coin chocolate" foil to fit over some of the front FLIR camera.
Pics coming today if the weather clears!!
-
Here are some indoor shots I took tonight with a flash. The Gunship is officially complete. I want to take some pictures under some nice day sunlight soon and I'll repost those soon.
Anywhoo! Here are some choice shots from tonight.
-
Those are some great shots showing off your great paint job, Sten. I find myself now wanting one of these.
-
Thanks Clint. Let's hope that eBay also likes my paint apps :P I hope to have it up on Monday and run a nice 5 day auction starting at $24.99
However, I have to ask.. do you believe putting a BIN @ say $50.00 with BO for 30 days would be better?
I am always at a cross roads when I put something up. I've had to re-list my red speeder 5 times :\ and now I'm down to just starting at $5.99...
Thoughts?

Hmmm, well I do know one thing. If you do a open bid auction, the listing fees should be slightly less and the final value fee should also be less. On the other hand, in today's run by the seat of your pants world, sometimes buyers would rather buy it now and get it over with rather than having to wait till the end of an auction to see if they have won or not. In today's economy, I don't usually do an open bid auction unless from research, I know that the item is hot and will get some bids. The custom toy bit used to be a pretty hot subject on ebay but interest has wained over the last couple of years. That, also has to do with the economical downturn. I do believe that open bid auctions get more exposure than closed bid ones. If you are a top rated seller "power seller" you are given the most exposure and therefore, would see the most traffic. I do like your idea of the Best Offer. That way, if a buyer thinks he is getting a good deal under the $50, than he will go for it.
-
Alright, last night I thought to myself that even though the Sigma Six Joe pilot is to "Scale" with the gunship his large feet were not movie accurate enough for me.
I dug through my figure bin and found an Elite Force "point man" Marine. With the help of an old joe helmet and some paint I was able to turn him into a nice pilot fig that fits the gunship.
It's pouring rain out right now so I can't get any new pics with the new pilot :\
-
looks good... heck... if nothing else at least the sigma six joe will be acurately scaled against the regular sized Na'Vi alien figures! lol
-
Ok, I wanted to take this to the next level so I'm adding in more details. I dry brushed the pilot.. he looks really cool now.. and I've added a decal to one rear wing and some numbering to the other.
Here is the finished pilot, and a photoshop of the tail wing art.
Next post will be art applied.. let see if it comes close!
-
Right.. so I've put on about a BILLIZION temp tatoo's in my life.. and when I need to do one for myself I screw it up and forget to take the plastic covering off and so I jump to plan B which is a classic skull and crossbones.... :-[
Water is still wet on the tail, but it should look nice by morning.
I may also take the transfer off.. I screwed that a little too... god.. what a night... I had such a great time earlier in the evening.. and then pow!
-
right in the kisser!
-
I never thought about using temp tatoos for decals! it makes sense, it's the same technique...
I'd redo the numbers as they do look a little lopsided, and unfourtunately it's those little details that will make or break an e-bay auction :(
-
Yep, working on it some tonight.. Must do good on this.. must!!
I need for the DAMN sun to come out here :\ so I can take some decent new pics...
-
What a great idea to add some art to your ships, just use temporary tatoos. I never would have thought it would work, but it looks great.
-
Ok, like I said I am finally done with this and it's finally up on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260537552965&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
Don't bid unless you'd like to :P I'm hoping that this will go for something decent. I spent a long time working on it and I'm hoping it will be my "holy grail" that will help me with my other customs and eBay.

I have to say that this was very fun to work on, and was one of my favorite to work on.
Wish me luck!!
-
It looks great Sten. I put it up on our front page and perhaps we can drum up some more business for you. This is just a great ship. That ebay auction is sure just pretty to look at too. Just amazing artwork and presentation for this.
-
looks awesome sten !
-
Good luck buddy, it turned out awesome.
-
Thanks guys. I feel that you guys and this board bring out the best work in myself and all of us. Truly this is the best customizer board on the net.
-
That is a great looking auction, Sten. You doctored it up just right. That's the sort of auction that will get some bids.
-
Good luck on the auction... there's some HTML gibberish after your text... and I fear only one image will hurt this, you should add a bunch of pictures to the auction if you want people to know what they're buying... ;)
-
There is an entire gallery associated with the auction. You can view it if you use Chrome, iE and Firefox. It's embedded so if you can't see it, then it may be because of some browser security options you have setup.
Here is the gallery that it points to: http://picasaweb.google.com/mypronmedia/RDAScorpionGunshipTheAvatarMovie#
-
That must be the case as I am running Firefox and that auction is full of pics and html for me.
-
That's weird, I'm running firefox too.. but clicked it again and it's showing all the text and pics... and video, lol.. so nevermind... :-[

The Republic SC-ATT (Single Clone - All Terrain Transport)
The SC-ATT is a multi-role single rider repulser lift vehicle. Its primary role is that of a fast scout and armored skirmisher. Able to reach very fast speeds the SC-ATT remains small enough to enter wooded areas and other terrain that larger vehicles would have trouble with.
Armament:
1 Light Blaster Cannon
1 Multi-purpose Grenade launcher (HE, AP, HEAT and an assortment of anti-droid ION including smoke and metal flake haze)
2 Anti-personal Cannons
-
I just have some details to add and it will be complete. I'll repost with the finished product in the next day or so but I wanted to get my thoughts down on paper as to what the SC-ATT was and what it looks like.
Thanks!
-
Looks a lot better now. Camo is always great in my opinion
great job, looking forward to see the finished thing
-
Great work and the camo pattern is excellent.
Ron
-
Looks much better with that awesome camo.
-
Wow, Sten, that is a great looking and quite effective camo scheme. You are on a roll, buddy.
-
Oh yeah, over the top with the camo paint job. On the front page yet again.
-
Ok, not really SW but I'm going to try my hand at another Avatar AMP Suit. This one will be based off the concept art which I've attached below.
So far I've removed the ammo belt, added earth mags to it so that it is now removable. I've also removed the knife, and added some more pieces which are in the sketch. I've also finished giving it the base coat and next will be adding the red, white and then details.
I have some decal paper in the mail so I should be able to repro a lot of the art work and smaller details.
Once the paint has set I'll take some photos and get them up!
-
These mechs were one of the best parts of the movie!
-
nice job on the camo sten
-
The rendering looks good. I just passed up the chance to pick up another one of these on clearance for $9.99
-
I keep waiting on the new CW TV show to give us some type of personal mech like this.
-
Cool I can't wait to see your next version. I got one on a semi clearance for $14 and not sure how i will alter it yet.
-
Ok,
I'm at point were I need to figure out which "nose art" i'm going to use on the leg. I could use the original and keep it "stock" or use one I pulled from an old Battlefield 2142 t-shirt I have.
What do you guys think? I had to do a lot of touch up on both pieces.. the BF2142 one was black and white and the Avatar one was covered with lots of "art grit".
-
I like miss red. It has a more vintage feel, to me.
-
I agree with Clint, but if you want a more modern look go with the second one. I think both are cool.
-
Both would look sweet. I think red would be my choice too though.
-
Bikini Red it is then!
-
Progress is steady but slow as I've been swamped with other things. However, I think I should be able to make some strides over the next few days.
The bright yellow should tone down with a wash over it.
-
looks great sten really looking forward to it
-
can't wait to see the bikini babe go on it.
-
looks good so far, cant wait to see more dude!
-
looking nice!
-
Sorry I moved in the middle of this project and started a new job. However, the weekend is almost here which means I can start up again!!
I should have some new pics soon!
Thanks
Sten
-
Good to hear from you buddy. I was wondering what happened to you.
-
Alright, it's 2013 and why not start off the year at a run! 0/
So up first this year we have a landing pad that will double as a display shelf at work. To go with the landing pad, I'll be redoing my old SW Gunship (after 7 years). These are about 2 days worth of work with some scrap wood, cardboard and of course the time to take my gunship apart and prime it.
I hope to be back in the game of customizing this year!!

Thank you for letting me lurk here so long without producing much, it's nice to be back!!
-
glad to see you back mate , its lookin good already!
-
Wow, the ship and the dio looks really promising, I'll be looking forward to see all of them finished
-
Welcome back Sten! That is a great looking project. Please show us more.
-
Wow, amazing work! I can't wait to see more.

This is looking really EPIC!!!
-
Wow, how have I missed this. Look for this update on our front page no later than tomorrow. Good to see you back Sten.
-
Welcome back! Great to hear from you and great to hear you have this new project. Can't wait to see this come together.
-
Welcome back mate and this dio is going to look awesome can't wait to see more updates.
Ron

Work continues slowly, though I'm making good progress. Started painting some of the details and bits. I want this version to be less busy, and more utilitarian. I'm modeling the paint and details off of a SeaHawk Helo. I plan to light this up with some LEDs as well. Probably one or two in the cargo area with possibly one in each wing as spot lights. Plus the landing platform will be full of LEDs as well. And I can't forget, she'll be getting some nose art as well! Though I haven't decided on the final as of yet.

Thank you!
-
Looking good.
I like the sound of all those plans you have for this, especially the leds!
-
Sound really sweet! Can't wait to see some nose art ideas.
-
Yeah, this is going to be cool. Havent seen an laat custom in a while.
-
with some parts I found and some of the kids extra lego bits I crafted a door gun for clearing the landing area.. Reminds me kind of a blunderbuss.. The weapon comes off, the platform turns and folds on itself. I painted it this morning and will detail tonight and show update.

Wow, an area denial weapon. Very nice!
-
What do we have here? Sten is back in town!
Great to see your signature back on the forum, and this is looking like a really nice project... Bring the Action!!!!
-
Here is a shot of the nose art I'm going to use. I touched it up, altered the colors and mocked it on a LAAT I found.. I think it should look pretty nice!

Very cool, I love it!
-
Nice, back to the front page. I am really enjoying these updates.
-
That is just Sweet!!
-
I received one of the two USB LED sets I ordered from China via Amazon. I've taken it apart and this is the one that will light up the cargo bay area of the LAAT. I'll end up painting the cover with some transparant red. I also stripped out a female USB connector. This will go in the gunship and allow me to power the LEDs from a power strip rather than batteries (so I can leave it on all the time for display).

-
What a great idea to light this up!
-
looking very very nice Sten
-
Can't wait to the completed result
Excellent work
-
Currently I'm touching up fine detail work on the gunship. I have to purchase some new printer ink to complete the decals, so I'll have to wait on Amazon to deliver those. I'm also waiting on a 13 LED USB powered laptop light from HK that will be used to light up the landing pad. That should be here late this week, early next. I will also try to wire up the cargo hold over the next day or so and get that working.
Thanks!
-
I got the cargo hold lighting half installed.. need to finish painting and tidy it up some, but they work!

So I've been working on little details here and there and trying to find time to work on decals and placement. Here is a mock up on my actual gunship. Real decals may look slightly different :P

-
That pin up gal is for the win. Back on the front page. Really enjoying this build. Would love to see you continue to post pictures and your thoughs on the whole lighting process on this too.
-
Those lights are looking good, Sten! Man, it is going to be easily seen for display.
-
Looks great! Can't wait for finished product. Have three sitting around waiting to get started on. Is there a trick to breaking it down? Tried to disassemble top cannon and can't seem to get it apart. I am afraid it may break if I pry to much. Have not tried taking apart main body yet. Any tips would be appreciated.
-
FANTASTIC! That gunship nose art is INCREDIBLE.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of this extraordinary project.
LOVE IT!!!!!

after you take out all the screws the body should come apart fairly easy. I did not take apart the top main guns, though they themselves pop out of the wings if you pull up with even gentle strength. When taking the wings apart, you'll need to remove 2 of the screws in the base so that the two come out. You can then pry the wings apart. much of the body slides into each other via slots, so don't bend while pulling, just pull straight. As do several of the small pieces.. they slot in..
other than that, it's pretty straight forward.
good luck!
-
love the art work man.
-
Great job with the lights and loving the nose art!
-
Thanks for the tips! Got everything apart fairly easy. Curious about the two top guns. They have screws but really don't seem to want to come apart after you take them out. May try prying and pulling a little harder on them tonight. Just afraid of breaking one. They have become expensive on ebay. Almost as cheap to buy the entire ship. Keep up the good work and thanks for the tips.
-
looks stunning Sten!

Weekend update... !!
I finally got some new printer ink and ran off two decal sheets. I've completed one side of the gunship! Since it's been some time since I last did this, I found the whole process incredibly easy. I'm using transparent decals rather than the ones that retain their white background.
Prepping the decals in the sun..

More to come today as I watch the super bowl and customize!
-
I am really enjoying that decal work. I would love to hear a step by step with how you take em from photo edited work to printing tips to cutting them out to applying them to the ship itself and then I am assuming you seal them once you have them placed? They look fantastic. Update on the front page.
-
excellent my friend!!! were do you purchase the sheets to do this because I am looking for a way to make decals too!
-
WOW That looks really good!
-
Stellar work, sir!!
-
The decals look great, but I have to ask:
Why is everything in English instead of Aurebesh?
-
Yeah I'd love a tutorial on the decals mate ,job looks ace !
-
The decals look great, but I have to ask:
Why is everything in English instead of Aurebesh?
I had a very long internal debate about this.. But in the end it came down to how many folks (including my kids) know how to read Aurebesh and how many would get more out of understanding familiar markings and such. In the end, I also didn't think adding the other more (aircraft like) decals would make much sense in Aurebesh, or I would have to explain them every time someone looked at them.
Finally, the decision process completed, I think I was going for more fun rather than "super realistic" since this will be displayed in the office.
Thanks for the good question though!
-
Been slowly working on the lady.. so far...
All (I think) decals have been applied...
The ship has been sealed with a matte finish and is ready to get a wash and dry brush..
I finished the back wall of the diorama.. (Pictures to come soon)..
I plan to re-assemble her today and will start doing the wash..
Here's a little teaser of the top guns (not washed or dry brushed)

Alright, almost to the finish line! I've re-assembled the Gunship (with 2 screws left over.....go figure!) so the only thing left to do is the wash, dry brush and final details. I also worked on the dioramas back wall some. I received another USB light this evening in the mail, so I can start on lighting up the diorama soon (tm).

Been a couple of postings since i have been in, Sten, and may i say, this lady is just sick! Dude, those little details are what I crave and you are not pulling any punches.
Lets see if Tamer beats me to the front page tomorrow with this one.
-
Wow, that gunship detail is off the charts. Gorgeous. I see what you mean about that straight line across that back wall.
Nice update, on the front page.
-

yeah, each decal was about 5 inches long and the home brewed ones can be a little fragile at times. I've found that especially if you don't use them rather quickly (within the first week or printing). Plus, when you get a decal that is that long and thin, it tends to want to curl, which damages the decal itself. Overall though, not bad.. Like everything, it's always a learning process. = )
-
COOOOL REALLY REALLY GREAT WORK :o :o :o
-
AWESOME!!!!!!!!love it ,absolutly freakin love it
-
Great work. I've been watching this one for a while. Love the decals too.
-
Oh yea, looking good! This is going to be so cool when everything comes together. What is you stuck the decals to a long piece of tape, trimmed to straight line if things didn't line up perfectly, then apply the tape to the wall?
-
Worked on the Gunship a little this weekend. Mostly doing the first wash. I'm pretty happy with how most of it turned out. There are some really good "oil leaks" here and there but I don't think it's over powering too much. Next up will be going over this with a dry brush to bring out the highlights.
You can see the troop deck pretty good here, the weathering on the inside turret came out very nice. There is also a REALLY nice oil stain near the forward door.
Really nice oil/weather staining here..

The engine area is very dirty, I'll go back and pull out some highlights here. (you can also see the USB port for the lighting inside.)

Under the main rocket launchers, I like how the wash settled here as this would be one of the most dirtiest parts of the ship.

Wow, that LAAT is really turning out nice. Back on the front page.

It's a water slide of an image I altered, filtered, touched up and then re-sampled for a higher print resolution.

I don't think anyone here can argue that this isn't one of the best gunship customs ever........it is.

Thanks Clonehead!.. you should see all the reference material I've collected thanks to the clone wars episodes as of late :P If I can finish this, I have about three more projects I want to get onto next.
GI Joe Hiss Tank (my friend worked on the CG Effects for the new movie and I tend to make a custom to celebrate his work.. The last one I did for him was a Star Scream from TF2.
Avatar Mech (Concept Edition) This was never in the movie, but looks really cool.
The Gunship from last weeks Clone Wars.. the "Tie" Gunship.. Though, it would be mostly scratch built which is something I've not done a lot of, I think it would be an adventure.
I'm very excited for 2013!!
-
I completed a bunch of dry brushing. I only have a few things left to finish up.. (canopy, missiles, gun barrels.. etc..) hopefully by this weekend the Gunship will be completed!!
You can see all the whole album here https://picasaweb.google.com/112607455078338332870/2013SWGunship# (https://picasaweb.google.com/112607455078338332870/2013SWGunship#)
and here is a teaser image.. Though I want to take a few night shots with the interior lights on tonight to see if they still work and don't shock me =)

dude this is some bad a$$ness totally see this in the CW like a custom specifc mission. But ur attention to detail is fantastic and i like the earthy feel to it as well. I'd love to see the reference material u've accumulated specifically any interior shots for the gunship. Keep up the good work.

I got some more done tonight and I tested the lights... I think they came out good enough! I left them on for about 10 minutes, nothing was hot and there was no burning smell so I consider that a WIN!
Expect some better pictures early next week (these are with my phone).

Had to get that video on the front page. So cool. I am so curios to hear about those lights and the overall project.
We have to get you on cafn sometime.
-
Sounds cool Tamer!. I'm calling it a poor mans LED light rig = )
I'm about to start on the landing deck lighting soon. I have a USB light that has 13 LEDs in it. I bought it mostly for parts since where can you get 13 LEDS and matching capacitors for $1.44?
The most expensive part will be getting more wire!

Removed from the housing, just have to un-solder the negative first, mark the leads and then do the positive.

awesome work on this Sten. Quick question about the un-soldering. I get that you unsolder the wire first but do you then unsolder each negative side of the LED first or does it not matter. I love the Idea of USB lighting.
-
Because there are so many LEDs and typically the negative is "longer" but in this application they have been trimmed I'm going to unsolder negatives first, mark them with a sharpie and then do the positives. This way when I get ready to rewire them they will be clearly marked.

Just a few "Night" images with the lights on and some Commando's on board with master Yoda. Image heavy!! So here is a link to the gallery with a few others not shown here. https://picasaweb.google.com/112607455078338332870/2013SWGunship#
Here you can see the USB plug on the back of the Gunship

Woah! Too Cool!
-
This is just cool on so many levels. I can't seem to get enough of this. Thank you for sharing this with us and a bit about how you are doing it. I absolutely love the light work.
I would love to see a basic tool list and supplies that you are using to work on the lights. I have to admit I bought a solder gun hoping to learn how to do some of this led lighting. I so like the usb port lighting affair you have arranged too.
Back on the front page.
-
AMAZING work Sten! The vehicle is just superb and the lighting really puts it over the top!
-
Wow! This thing makes me want to put on some clone armor and jump in! The light is an amazing visual. Excellent work!

-
Grey fox looks good but, I want a gunship like that!!!

They are at the end of the album (for now) = )

Recently I was asked by my daughter to put my skills to real use... She wanted me to buy her a toy pony stable.. Of course, I wish it was a stable for [at1]... but alas.. using my powers for good.. I created this for about 5% what Amazon was charging.. I have lots more images at the link below..

Maybe, she could fit a few speeder bikes in there if I ask nicely?? : )
Enjoy!
-
Looking sharp, buddy! That's one lucky girl.

It has been some time since I last posted.. I know.. where does the time go? Well, in my case I've sold a house, shared a house and finally built a house over the last 18 months. With that, the new house is coming along and I was able to build and finish my workbench this weekend in the garage, which gods be praised has allowed me to at last dig out all my craft material..

On top of that, what a time to be alive right? TFA!! coming in just a few short months... Plus all the new stuff and things being released I couldn't help myself I just had the itch to paint, and really anything. It's not a large piece (those are coming) but it felt so awesome to paint again.. I give you..

Can't see that first image, but it is daggone great to see you back. I was wondering what you were up to a few months ago when I was talking about your work on the podcast. Off to share your latest work.

The Falcon looks great and you did a great job on the weathering.

-

That came out fantastic Sten well done indeed.
Ron
-
I see it now. Looks great. Off to share.
-
The weathering on the AT-M6 and the Crait base are phenomenal.
Excellent work.
-
Wow, you've got SO MUCH AWESOME STUFF! Your garrison of the 209th Heavy Armor AT-TE Clone Assult Combat Team let my jaw hit the desk! They're my favourites of your projects! The repaint of the Republic Cruiser looks great, too! And your "Lucky Lekku" Republic Gunship is off the charts!
I'm very impressed!

Alright! Bored again? nope.. just got some free time and a new airbrush! I hope to seal this, then start on my next project as quick as possible so not to have this thread go so long without action! Thanks everyone
Sten

Wow, that looks awesome. Good to see you back around. Off to the front pages.
-
Damn! That looks so nice!
-
When I looked at your picture, I took a second closer look at my skiff here. Then I looked back at your skiff and let me put it like this:
After 20 years (or 11 years since the last repaint) Hasbro put it in the park for you to knock it out of the park.
This is damn awesome, man! :o
It might be very attractive for many customizers if the price for this beauty keeps falling. Still glad I paid full price - was worth every single penny.
I need an airbrush, too!
-
Impressive work mate, the weathering looks perfect.
Ron
-
That looks really spectacular. The weathering kicks it up a notch. Nice work.
-
Your repainted Desert Skiff looks phenomenal.
I could be used as a ILM movie model.
Excellent work.
