Title: What are you reading now?
Post by: Tamer on June 10, 2008, 06:27:40 AM
I just finished up True Colors of the Republic Commando Series. I also recently finished the SOTE book and loved that one too. I also have a few other science fiction books I have been ardently trying to hold off reading as I will be going to the beach in a few weeks and want to use em there! I have a nasty habit of reading a good book in a few hours no longer than a day if I like it.

I'm reading the 7th and final book in Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
The Dark Tower     It seems a little thick headed at best and at this point he seems a little off of the track that he started with the first book THE Gunslinger, in the series, that was published more than 20 years ago.

I just finished the book before Invincible and now I am waiting for that on Library Loan. I guess the final Republic Commando book is due out in a few months too. I really liked that series. Anyone notice the appearances by Venku and Jusik in the book I just mentioned? I don't like the fact that it seems they didn't figure out the clone ageing thing.  I gotta have a book with a semi happy ending even if it is Star Wars.

At the min I am reading Truce at Bakura, but before that I read Shadows of the Empire, and Before that I read the entire Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

I have read the Hitchhikers guide and Dirk Gently series several times. Great stuff! some people just don't understand british humer but I love it! Too bad about that latest Hitch hikers guide movie....I liked the original BBC series better.

Yeah the movie was a huge disappointment to me as, I saw the original when it was being broadcast, and when I saw the movie, it wasnt as good.

Well it turns out I may have to buy Invincible as the libraries that have it don't want to release it because it is so new daggone it! I am not having good SW luck today!

This morning picked up Rogue Squadron Books 1 to 3, and Jedi Search, all for 3.21 so not a bad little morning.

cool deal Michael. I got the go ahead to buy Invincible today so I will see how that ends up and see if I have to start referring to our Darth Caedus in the past tense.

Currently, I am reading a book authored by Mike Brotherton called Spider Star. It is a little too much science and not enough fiction for me, but it is starting to get a little action in it now so I will keep reading.

Well the book I have been reading is Flawed Giant, its about LBJ, kind of boring stuff for most people, but I like reading on historical figures.

Well, I picked up the Watchmen graphic novel in preparation for the theatrical release. It's pretty interesting so far and I am somewhat rivited.

I scored some more books Thursday, I love our local second hand book shop, I got the rest of the X-Wing Books 4 to 7, and Champion of the Force, they have others which I am going to have a look at this Thursday providing no one has picked these up.

A good second hand book store is almost as good as a fully refreshed and restocked SW aisle! Almost.

I keep falling in and out of the comics.  I was all over Jedi and Republic, was into Legacy, and started in on The Dark Times, but after awhile, I just get tired of waiting for them to come out.  There are some great characters in all of those though, and some good story lines as well!

Scored some more books this morning, and also have one coming to me from Ebay:-

SECOND BOOK SHOP SCORE:
Edge of Victory I - Conquest
The Courtship of Princess Leia
Assault at Selonia
Splinter of the Mind's Eye (First Edition)

Got these all for $3.05

EBAY SCORE:
First Edition Excellent Condition Star Wars RPG (WEG)

Got this for a steal $14.00, however it only cost me $5.00, as my Mum in England paid for it as a Birthday Present, however she did also buy me the Vintage Yoda as well that I scored.

Right now, I'm reading "Darth Bane: Path Of Destruction."  I'm about 1/3 way into it, and it's pretty good so far.  It's very interesting to see how one of the Greatest Sith Lords in SW history came to be.  I can't wait to finish this one and get the 2nd one.  I also read over at Star Wars.com that the author is writing the 3rd installment of the Darth Bane trilogy.

I am having a heck of a time getting Invincible from our local library, but I think my wife just found the book in a neighboring town.  I don't have the other 8 or so books from this so I am not gonna buy it yet. I will hopefully have it by the weekend. I am anxious to see if Jaina gets after ole Caedus and vice versa.

I just finished the new Shananarra books (probably spelled that wrong) which was a story about the aftermath of world wide nuclear wars and the refugess strugging to find a majic utopia to protect them from the total end. It was a good read.

I am just starting a David Weber series titled, "Armagedeon's Reef" that seems like it might be good if I can get past all the church stuff in it. It is talking about all kinds of corruption and how the church is corrupt. The good news is there are bad aliens called the Gbaba entent on wiping out all humanity so there is some hope for it.

Well, I just finished "Darth Bane: Path of Destruction," and it was awesome.  Very good book, and I'll probably go out tomorrow and pick up "Rule of Two."  The author, Drew Karpyshyn, was also on the creative team who designed the KOTOR video games, so there were a lot of allusions to things from there.  If you haven't read these books yet, it's well worth the read.

The Shanara books, by Terry Brooks I believe, were some very good books.  I had read the original trilogy of books years ago and greatly enjoyed them.  I didn't realize that these new books took place in a more modern time.

Thats how you spell that. Yeah, these books are in a different time period, but use some of the same races of characters and some of the same people as the previous books we liked. I am not a die hard Brooks fan, but it was there and then I had to go and read em all. I think it is well worth the read. It is kind of a fantasy story in the aftermath of a nuclear war in the US.

I will have to check out the Bane books. Man, I thought that wave hasbro did was awesome and this one of the best. I would love to know the backstory on him. On that same note, my wife finally found Invincible and reserved it for me. I should be seeing Jaina kick Jacen's butt here in a few weeks.

I went out to find the 2nd book in the Darth Bane series, only to find it was still in hard back, and I'm not paying $26 for it either.  I guess I could start on the New Jedi Order series, since I haven't read one book from there yet.  Then I can begin with that last series.  As for the new Shanara books, what is the first book in this series.  I may pick it up, though it's probably been 10 years or more since I last read any of these.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?

I am not sure of the first title as I started with the second book, but the series is called "The Genisis of Shanara". The last book was called Gypsy Morph.

Well, I have dove into the LOTR trilogy again. I am done with the first book and am pretty close to wrapping up the Two Towers, the second book.
I read an interview with Christopher Lee (Saruman) where he claimed to read the trilogy once every year.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?

i havent been keeping up but from what i have heard terry brooks did 3 books that take place in present time. the first one is called running with the demon. they follow the adventures of john ross, a knight of the word, and a girl named nest freemark and concern the word(good) vs. the void(evil). now apparantly(again just what i heard) the genesis of shanara series is about how the world goes from modern day to the future which is where the sword of shanara takes place.

DC, I saw that Knight of the Word Series and there are a couple of em that are prominent in this new Genosis of Shanara series. I might have to give those a read too. I really enjoyed the series though.

Guess what the wife brought home from Interlibrary loan this weekend? I am now gonna see if Jaina kicks some brother tail. Invincible is gonna get one of my evenings this week. One evening you don't see me on here you know what I will be reading!

Well I just finished "Invinbible" yesterday and must say I didn't like how it ended much. Anyone else care to comment. I am interested in seeing Darth Caedus' take on it.

I am also starting to loose interest in the David Weber series I am reading. I was hoping it would be further technologically along now, but they are still sailing around in 1600 and early 1700 naval ships. I wanted to see em get past that and start prepping for the bad guys (Gbaba). It is my guess that Weber is gonna try to get a long run out of this storyline, but he had better get it further along if he wants me to read past one more book. The characters are likeable, but this whole thing started out as a colony to protect against the bad aliens who wiped out Earth and we are still sailing on wooden boats here!

I read "Jedi Search," and it was a good read.  Now I need to decide if I want to start the 2nd book in that particular 3-part series, or go back to Darth Bane: Path of Two.  Of course, now that I'm back at work, I will have less time to read...

I have Millenium Falcon ordered so I should have it by mid week.

Plus with reading, it leaves so much for the reader to paint in your minds eye, that everyone has a slighlty differnt interpitation of how the story should flow. It's best to take others input with a grain of salt sometimes and let the storyas you see it be your deciding factor.

On with Millenium Falcon, I am 1/4 of teh way done and I find it a good filler piece so far, I am curious as to where some of the subplots are going, so it is holding my attention. I still can't wait til the next large series starts.

I am kinda split so far on Karen Traviss or whatever her name is. She has some good points and some bad points. I think she does better with the action sequences than she does with the relationship stuff!

I am 5 chapters into Death Star,  looks like it will be an intertwined story line, some what slow at first but hopefully it will  pick up with out ending to quickly.

I like some of these single book stories but I am waiting for the next multi novel storyline to start.

I was left a little disappointed with Invincible, but I now want to read order sixty six. I am thinking though that the ending will leave me ticked off so I am not in a hurry to find it. I will wait till I see it for a good hardbound or paper back price. I am also wondering if the new milenium falcon book is gonna be worth a read. I guess it is kinda a story right after Invincible and doesn't involve the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, but just gives a back story to the falcon and sounds like a good ole fashion treasure hunt.

i ussually wait for the comics to be released in a graphic novel. i have lots of the older ones from 2000 to 2004 in 4 issue limited series runs. and am gradually getting the rest in graphic novel as i find good deals.
just about every star wars novel released i have read. i was so happy when they released the darth bane books and now am waiting for the third installment.
i absolutely loved and would recommend the republic commando books and cant wait for the new one,  imperial commando 501st.
i liked the new jedi order  series of books, but threw the book when they killed chewie by dropping sernpidal on his head. didnt read the book for 2 days and it is about the only one i have never re-r ead. i cursed anakin solo that day. i was sad when anakin died, but it was the least he could do in memory of chewie.
i enjoyed the swarm war series, but was happy it was a short series.
i enjoyed the legacy of the jedi series. especially the mandos and our clone friends and ol' jusik'a. and boba fett. the ol'  barve' himself.
i liked the coruscant nights sreies and even re read them once. nice back story for vader and bits from xiszor, aside from comics info. hard to keep tabs on all the continuity from one series and publisher to the next, but very enjoyable reads.
early this month i picked up the first book of the new fate of the jedi series. outcast is a fair first novel for a series. keeps you wanting more and having to wait for it too.
i am still trying to get the entire x-wing series so i can read them again. they are the only ones i still need to re-read.
last week i re read the first book of the bounty hunter wars trilogy. got to love any story with boba fett.
i really havent read any of the young reader star wars books, but have a feeling i will have to get them sooner or later as my children learn how to read better. they are only 4 and 6 so i might have a year or two.

Just finished " No Prisoners" and was a little disappointed.
it was a good read. it  took me about 2 days, read in 4 sittings.
it gave a little insight into certain characters, and their relationships, but also left more unanswered questions.
it contained a few new characters and a few older characters(as their younger selves) and expanded relationships and associations only hinted at and later forgotten.
overall a good story and worth reading, in my opinion.

I just finished Order 66 a few weeks ago and am currently reading (well viewing for the most part), SW inredible cross sections. I am telling you those things are so detailed you could spend hours on each drawing.  I had in my hand one of the new Fate of the Jedi books, but put it back. I haven't heard too many good reviews of this series so far so I am waiting for you guys to pick some up and let me know if they are good reads. I guess the new one Omen is number four on the bestseller lists.  :P

I do like to read a new SW book every now and then. The last Jedi series got me hooked with the last two books with the tale of Jacen turning to the darkside. I just hate it when they kill off great characters (like Mara in this last series for example), and they always always leave you hanging with unresolved issues and a new thream looming for the would be heroes. Methinks the new books will focus on Jaina and perhaps Ben.

Has anyone read the new what is it called Fate of the Jedi series and can comment on the major characters/storyline?
Title: Re: What are you reading now?
Post by: dana.raye.smith on July 18, 2009, 09:27:16 PM
I have read both of the now released books from Fate of the Jedi series Abyss and Omen .
Abyss (the first one I think) was slow and a little hard for me at times, but i prefer lots of action all throughout the book. as the first book in a new series, it followed the basic pattern well. descriptive and intriguing and just enough story to make you want to read the next book. it had a good action sequence in the first few chapters and then kind of died off for a few chapters.
they basically tell you all you need to know of the story spoiler wise over on the wookieepedia site. just search for the book series or title.
And the short story about the lost tribe of the sith that was available for download was a part of the new book... kind of. at least it involved the lost sith from the vessel OMEN.
and it involved the sith ship/eyeball with wing shaped training orb that was pretty predominant in the last few books of the last series.
Spoiler...the next book will take Luke and Ben into the Maw to face a new sith threat or some such. And the planet bound survivors of OMEN are now a spacefaring tribe of sith unaware of the ONE SITH that were in the background of the last series.
if the book reading is too much, check out the bits on Wookieepedia. and all the other info.
only bad thing is you have to read that too...

Yeah, you pretty much MUST read the RC/IC books in order for anything to make sense.

The Posleen War stuff is good - but I fell behind in reading them and have to sort out where I'd need to pick back up.  I *have* however kept up on his Ghost series!  Not sci-fi, more modern-day mil-adventure with some really adult stuff tossed in.  But *I* like it.   8)

I got a great deal on a hardback new release IMO but my wife wasnt too happy I spent $19 on one book.
So I bought her a $5 coffee and she loved that as well as our $45 lunch.... go figure.
Hvent read too much, but it is pretty good so far, barely 5 chapters in now.

I will have to check out that book, D.R.S.  I'm not familiar with the Fate of the Jedi series, so I might have to start at the beginning.  As for me, I am just passing the part where Caedus is killed by Jaina in INVINCIBLE.  It's a really great book, so I can't wait to see how it ends.

I finished Invincible.  I am kind of glad Jaina showed no remorse when terminating Caedus, seeing as she might have died if she didn't.  Well, in my opinion it's a really great book and I highly recommend it to others.

that whole series was good and well worth the read.
but i got them when they were released and had to wait forever for each book.
just about 50 pages left on Abyss and then i will be back to waiting for the next release.
i so hate waiting, but i sure get lots of practice at it, and people think i am really patient.
if they only knew how much i hate it....

I don't mind waiting, as long as you have something to occupy that time.  That always makes the time fly, although I'm not sure about days...

I finished reading Abyss, book 3 from the Fate of the Jedi series, about 2 days ago.
Not as much action as I like, but lots of information and lots more about the Sith and the sickness that is affecting the younger Jedi.
And it sets up the next book nicely, along with the new Lost Tribe of the Sith downloadable book.
I liked it.... but I am a SW fan...

I just finished Darth Bane: Rule of Two, and It was an ok book.  Not as good as the first one in the series, but there just seemed to be WAY too much emphasis placed on some miraculous things Bane could do with the Dark Side.  Kind of like watching a movie that is just WAY too unbelievable.  Still it wasn't bad.  I kinda hope they do a 3rd one to round it all out.

I started Vector Prime last night.  I really want to get caught up on the SW Universe, so I'm starting there and going all the way up to present.  However, I WILL have to make an exception when Deathtroopers comes out later this month!

There is a 3rd Bane book already coming, a few months away I believe.
Been reading lots of SW fanfic stories.... downloadable from theforce.net or just readable from there.
Some are much better than others, but need something to occupy me until real stuff is released.

"One Second After" by William Forstchen.  Recently published novel about how a small town in North Carolina handles life after the USA being hit by 3-ish exo-atmospheric nuclear detonations.

Denial runs strong early on.  Seriously, if I were on my cell-phone talking to an old friend/former CO who is now at the Pentagon and hear background noises including yelling/screaming/arguing and the General says, "Something just came up, I gotta go-" and the call drops *AND* the cell phone goes dead *AND* the electricity to the house dies ALL AT THE SAME TIME, I'm NOT gonna be hoping things get better tomorrow.  Hell no.  I won't even bother checking to see if the land-line is working.  At that point, EVERYONE puts on a gun ALL THE TIME, trees get dropped across the road, etc etc.  Because, my friends, at that point, the shit has indeed hit the fan and we are ALL downwind...

Thankfully, it is just a work of fiction.

For now.

Finished Vector Prime.  Man, what a downer!  Not a huge fan of that author, R.A. Salvadore.  Too many sentence fragments for my liking, too many commas.  The story was good, but for those of you who haven't read it, I won't spoil it.  Suffice it to say, someone dies who shouldn't!

I'm debating on going to the library to get the next in the series, or wait for Deathtroopers...

I am almost halfway through with Death Troopers now.
Not the best book I have ever read, but definitely the best read this month.
So far I would say it is worth a read.
And there are a few mainstream SW characters making cameo appearances.
I dont want to ruin it, but had to give a little teaser/spoiler.
I will only name drop if asked to, I hate it when someone ruins a book by giving the whole story away.
But if you didnt already know, it is a SW story with zombie like creatures.
Check out the Zombieweek pics at starwars.com for a little more about this if interested.

Well, I finished the book last night before the MondayNight Football game was over.
I did like it, and after a little searching online, I found out it does tie in to a few other obscure things.
Or things that are obscure to me.
I am not really big into online games... I would like to be... but I probably would not have a family or home if I got into them too much.
But there is a bit in a game called StarWarsGalaxies played online that goes along with the book.
And lots of other stuff on starwars.com for promoting this book.
I like horror books to a point, and zombie movies rock.... so to me this was a good pairing.

Imperial Commando 501st... got it, read it... loved it.
Great book....
Also picked up book 13 of a little series called "The Wheel of Time" by a guy named Robert Jordan.
Started reading the series in 1998, and they are really big books.... Like unabridged version of The Stand big or Shogun-Taipan-King Rat big... 700+pages each average...
New book is called The Gathering Storm and it has a co author since Jordan died in like 2007....
Great series, started out as a planned 8 book series that went crazy, and he died after book 12 but had it all planned out with notes and plotlines and all, but he never got to finish the penning.
His last request was for someone to finish the series... a guy named Brandon Sanderson is finishing it.
Pretty near the same style, and good so far... only 155 pages in and I am pleased so far.
But it has averaged a year or more between books, and there are 2 more books before its all done.
I actually started reading Jordan books when he wrote a few Conan the Barbarian novels.
I always liked the Conan and Tarzan series books... lots of action and quick paced easy reading for me...

I love the Wheel of Time series and thought it was over. If I recall this is a story about a guy majic user name Rand who is part of a prophecy and supposedly going crazy because guys using majic turn crazy so he is supposed to cleanse saidin? Something like that. Saw it in wally world and almost bought it, but said how can this be he's dead! Glad it will all be finished though. Glad to hear it is similar to Jordan's style too.

Still need to get Commando. I keep hinting to my wife as my Bday is Monday, but who knows!

Yesterday, I went out and bought, in my opinion, the best Star Wars books I have ever read.  The book is the finale to Darth Bane series, titled Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil.  I read all day and night through the fluctuating plotline of the intense legacies that were foretold beneath the cover, so to speak.  Overall it was a great book, but I am confused if Darth Bane won in the end or Darth Zannah.  If you've read the book, you know what I mean, but overall, it was a great read and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, that is if you've read the first two.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?

That is the next book I have in mind to read.  I have really enjoyed the Darth Bane series so far, and have been waiting for the Dynasty of Evil to come to paperback.  The author, Drew Karpyshyn, is also the writer of the Mass Effect video games, which is cool.

I just finished Dark Tide I the other night, and plan on starting on Dark Tide II tonight.  I'm trying to catch up with the future of Star Wars, and have a LONG way to go.  I had a real hard time getting into it at the beginning because I had just completed the Republic Commando series, and am STILL so enthralled with that whole legacy.  However, the development of the Solo kids have made these books more interesting.  I really want to get caught up quickly!  Too bad there's not a Cliff's Notes for these! LOL!

I picked up the SW Legacy Graphic Novel volumes 7 and 8 this weekend and read them. Nice additions to the storyline and I am happy to have finally gotten caught up with this series now.
I agree with the Darth Bane trilogy, great books and I have reread them 3 times now already. There is a Darkhorse comics 4 issue miniseries called Jedi VS Sith or some such, that covers the jedi/sith war where Bane tricks the sith into using the thought bomb and killing everyone, and it also has the meeting of Bane and Zannah at the end of the series.
I still reread all the NJO books I have here. Half of them are in Germany.
Really there arent many SW novels I havent read and re- read or that I dont own.
although there were a few that are hard to read or enjoy. Splinter in a minds eye comes to mind. And a few of the Tales from series stories...

I'm waiting to read the 3rd Darth Bane book til it comes out in paperback, and the same thing with the Fate of the Jedi books, waiting for paperback. In this recession it really ticks me off that they really think people want to spend $25 on a book. Why can't they issue hardcovers/paperbacks at the same time. I have to wait for a year to read these books. Sucks.

I picked up the Thrawn Trilogy Hardcover Graphic novel and the latest Fate of the Jedi novel, Backlash.
I reread the Thrawn trilogy just before getting the graphic novel...  It is 480-some pages of awesome...
It is not really straight from Zahn's novels, but the stories were well told and the artwork well done and showed lots of fore-thought and planning in the delivery of the story through a visual means.
The book was pretty expensive, but I am pleased with the purchase... and it took me all of 4 hours to read it....
As for Backlash... I have only read 20 or 30 pages, but it is a good read, and thus far I like the progression of the novel and the overall plotline of the series.
It has got me wondering  just where the next major plotline might be taking the SW universe....

The Thrawn Trilogy comic adaptations are cool, but if you just read those and not the books then you will miss out on part of the story. I would have to say the comics are Abridged. I read the books and then a couple of years later after all 3 books had been adapted to comics I went through and reread the books. After each chapter, I read the comic book up to the end of the chapter. That is the best way. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the Expanded Universe. But I started in '96 when Star Wars became hot again and we were all getting hyped up for the special editions. It lead me to going all out and reading all the books and comics, not to mention my addiction to action figures. I am ready to get started on the Fate of the Jedi books. Book one is about to come out in paperback so I am excited.

I read the last of the Darth Bane trilogy last week. It was pretty good. He learned the ole body transfer thing. I forget the title, but it was a good read.  I am trying to get some other Military Sci Fi books so I can get caught up.

Dynasty of Evil, Shawn.  I found it somewhat horrible that he was lost forever in the shadows of darkness, but then again, it was his choice to do so.

Maybe I got the wrong Sith. This one ended with him taking over his female apprentices body and getting a new apprentice.

You'll be surprised how it ends, Koty!

I don't mean to be Atin(Stubborn), but it also says on Wookiepedia, "Following a heated duel, Bane attempted to transfer his essence into Zannah's body. However, her will proved to be too strong and Zannah defeated him, ending the life of the Sith'ari, yet also validating herself as his successor. Nearly a millennium later, Bane's Sith Order would defeat the Jedi and overthrow the Republic."

LOL. Sounds like we are gonna have a debate. Remember how the first thing she did was check her one hand that Bane had problems with shaking? I think ole Bane got in there, but ofcourse wouldn't reveal he had that type of power to his new apprentice. It was probably written so folks could go either way. I do agree though that he introduced himself to his new apprentice as the gal.

How much do you want to bet that we will see future books with the ol gal showing quite a few of Bane's traits? It just good book selling idealology.

I finished Fate Of the Jedi Allies a few weeks ago.
I am happy with the series as whole so far.
Some of the books are better than others, but the storyline as a whole flows well and I keep having to wait longer and longer for the next installment.
I reread the first 2 darth bane books and am starting the 3rd again.
As well as the Jedi versus Sith comic series. I do so love the earlier insight of the sith and the darkside.

Man, you guys need to throw in a spoilers warning on them posts. I don't even need to read the 3rd Darth Bane book now. It hasn't been released in paperback yet is why I haven't read it.
Anyways, I've been reading Omen, Fate of the Jedi series. The 1st book wasn't too good, but the 2nd one is getting better.

Sorry Mike, as you can see we still can't figure out the ending anyhow. We do need to remember not to talk about those things in open threads though. Very good point!

yeah, I'm looking forward to reading the 3rd Darth Bane book. I wish they would quit releasing books in hardcover, or at least release the Paperbacks simultaniously.  I mean, really, who can afford $20-$30 for a book? That's taking away from my collecting money!

Ain't that the truth. I will be honest, I just cheated and got it from the local library. I try to "encourage" them to get all the new SW books, not to mention enlarging thier Sci Fi books in general.

If I can wait, I buy them used in  hardcover from a local used bookstore or within the first week of release they ussually give a 25% off cover price discount. Still a bit of money even with the discount, but it beats waiting forever.
The used book route is the way to go... ussually able to get them in hardcover for slightly more than paperback prices and still in great shape.
The books releases are ussually fewer and more time between than the toys, so it evens out in the end.
And when you cant find figs or ships, you buy what you can get.

I just see Hasbro's continued fiascos as ways for me to shore up my book funds. They sure did get me some ships this year, but outside of a few ESB Vintage waves I can buy me a few SW books.

yeah, I take advantage of used book stores if I find a deal or if there is a book I just can't wait for. I haven't tried the library yet but I might do that. The only other bad thing about Hardbacks is that they don't fit in with the rest of my Paperback collections so I end up selling them/Getting ripped off at the Used bookstore. It's a vicious cycle.

I wish I would have found this site last summer cuz I just got rid of about 20 hardbacks and got ripped off. I would have given them to you instead of basically given them to the used book store. I just got tired of them taking up space. Actually I like hardbacks if I am at home reading but since I usually take my books to work and read them at breaktime, they are a little too big.

totally agree mike    and for me the X-wing novels follow a close second
Title: Re: What are you reading now?
Post by: Mike Cypress on September 17, 2010, 01:47:30 PM
Yeah, I like the X-Wing novels too...that's one of the good things about Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor is it has Rogue Squadron. The Republic Commando books weren't the best, in my opinion they started off real slow but they did grow on me so that wouldn't be considered the "best" to me. The Thrawn Trilogy just starts off with that Star Wars feeling and continues for 3 books. It has everything: great plot, action,  plus it introduced Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Jorus C''Baoth, Talon Karde,  and it was the 1st source to name Imperial Center as Coruscant. But then, I haven't liked any of Zahn's Star War's books since then.
I heard that there is a new book coming out about Darth Plagueis and actually found this on Wookiepedia http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Plagueis_(novel) so that is good news, but I think Palpatine/Darth Sidious needs his own novel to fill in the gaps and to piece together all the plots, schemes, conspiricies, etc....that he had going on.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?
Post by: Mike Cypress on October 01, 2010, 11:02:28 AM
I just finished Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor and I have to warn anybody who hasn't read it....it sucked. It starts off alright, hyping you up for Rogue Squadron action, and then it just falls apart. It actually took me a month to "Force" myself to finish it. I would recommend everybody skip this one. One thing I didn't like is that it had all the characters using some dirty language, not actual cuss words, but close to it. It just don't fit in with the Star Wars Universe. I give it 2 thumbs down.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?
Post by: Tamer on October 01, 2010, 02:29:44 PM
Well then I won't waste my money on that then. Thanks for the warning. I don't know why they want to give SW characters potty mouth, I bet George won't let that author write anymore.
Title: Re: What are you reading now?
Post by: Mike Cypress on October 01, 2010, 04:56:58 PM
Yeah, it just didn't fit in with the Star Wars Universe....and I'm an avid cusser, but I just can't see my Star Wars characters talking like that. Also, he had some really dumb names for the New Republic capitol ships....for instance, "Remember Alderaan"was one,  but the one that got me was "Take Another Chance." I just found it hard to believe that they would name warships that. The books definitely worth skipping. The 3rd Darth Bane book just came out in paperback so i'm going to try to get that one next.

I picked up Fatal Alliance just after it s release at a local Hastings... Last one they had... at their ussual promotional release price of %50 off a new hardback. I finished reading it for a third time on friday night before the most recent CW cartoon.
I really am liking this storyline, and look forward to future books of this era.
I hope they continue it for at least a couple more books.
I also picked up the latest installment of The Wheel of Time series "Towers of Midnight". I have been looking forward to this one for so long... I did miss the first week promotional deal at Hastings of %50 off cover price, but still got it for $19.99 plus tax. So far I have the entire series in first print, first release hardcover.
If you cant tell, I love this series. There are college level classes where people discuss only this series, and websites with a very comprehensive FAQ section about it. And if you cant find an answer, you can post new topics for discussion and hopefully gain some insight about it.
It is not something you can pick up and read out of order and understand fully, but each book contains a glossary which helps out alot sith anything that may cause you to have questions. A very Tolkeinesque series(not sure about spelling on that one), with books about books and lots of info about what the author has created within the series character and world wise.
I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading alot... these books are all massive... and it is about the most consistently well written series I have ever read. Even with Mr Sanderson taking over the ending the story, it follows Mr Jordans style so well, I am hooked.
I really enjoyed the Conan series books written by Mr Jordan when I was younger.
I like big long books. My job has always given me lots of time away from home with little to do, so I read... that is what I do for my "me" time.

Almost 2 weeks ago I picked up the latest Fate of the Jedi series installment titled Vortex at a local Hastings in hardback for$12.99 plus tax.
I spent a week away from home at a school for work and figured I would have plenty of time to read it. I was wrong about that. A week with homework every night never dawned on me. I managed to read about a chapter a day before bed all week, and finished it off in a day when I got home.
I am liking this storyline and the evolution of the characters and events, but it makes you wonder how far they will continue with this story arc. I think there are three more books coming to complete it, but that means nothing.
I have also been checking out the downloadable content for the upcoming novel Red Harvest excerpts  and the Lost Tribe of the Sith stories off starwars.com... the LToS stories are also in the back of the Fate of the Jedi books as well. Both are worth checking out and the price is right... does not get much better than free.
I am looking forward to reading all of Red Harvest when it is released. I tend to like the pre- pre-prequel stories. And how can stories about Sith not be worth checking out?

So tonight the wife and I stopped at the last remaining Borders bookstore in our area to see what could be found for cheap.  I had hopes of picking up the 2nd in the Old Republic series that just came out, but that was all gone.  Instead, I picked up a newer book called Choices of One, written by Timothy Zahn.  I've always enjoyed his books and writings, so I just picked it up without much thought.  It's set 8 months after the Battle of Yavin, and stars Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, and even Mara Jade as the Emperor's Hand.  I'll give a review when I've finished!

Well I haven't read any new SW books lately, but I have been getting into a zombie series by J.L. Bourne called Day to Day Armageadon which is kind of a like a journal of someone who is surviving a Zombie Apocalypse.  Max Brooks with World War Z did something with a similar style to those who survived a similar type of apocalypse after it was over, but this one is walking you throught it present day. I find the writing very good and look forward to adding the lastest release to my book collection the first week of October.

Ofcourse I am still continuing my John Ringo military sci fi collection with the Troy Series now even though the Posleen Stories are my favorite.

I really did enjoy reading Red Harvest this summer and really would like to read more Sith stories. I am going to have to try Lost Tribe of the Sith.

Han and Chewie in it, I stopped, because that kind of ruined it for me.  Well, I got it again yesterday (having paid off my library account of owed fees, that were probably two years old), and finished the remaining 140 pages.  I don't get how Han seemed to be so unaffected by all of it in the end, ESPECIALLY after the zombie in the shuttle.  Overall, I love how the action picked up more, and they included more of the undead (A LOT MORE, especially in the hangar).  Sartoris really changed his character, too, and did a noble thing.  Too bad Kale had to turn into a zombie, though...  Overall, the book was better than I thought it would be, but the inclusion of Han, and how he seemed so unaffected still doesn't make sense to me.

I'll be certain to get the prequel, Red Harvest, next time I go.  (Already have it requested...)

I found SW the Force Unleashed at wally world so I brought that home. Guess I need to buy the first one so I read em in order though.

I wanted to buy the Lost Tribe of the Sith, but they are only available on Kindle as an Ebook novella. HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE AN EBOOK THEY ARE ALL FREE TO DOWNLOAD! Daggone, it has me thinking I might buy one. I do like my books on paper though.

I do have more Zombie books on the way too.

Finished Red Harvest today.  I don't know what to say except WOW.  Better than the last book, by far, but too bad Tulkh had to die. (Somehow I knew he and Rojo would; said it from the beginning)   :'(  In the end, I wasn't sure whether Zo would live or not.

I am currently reading the original radio scripts for "The Hitch-Hikers' Guide To The Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. This is the original format for The Guide, predating even the books which are considered to be the "official" versions of the story.

Working on the fifth book of the series, "The Last Dragon Chronicles" called , "Dark Fire"...  I'm a little over 300 pages in after two days.  It's been about three years since I picked up book four, but the author is doing a great job of bringing everything back into context for such an instance.

Finished Eona, the sequel to Eon, by Allison Goodman last night; it was one of those compelling reads that I just couldn't put down.  It started out fairly weak, because it didn't have that connection most sequels have to bring you up to speed.  (Three years since the last one was published).  As the plot evolved, and the characters did, one of the portagonists "changed", evolving from the sinister antagonist we had known him as in the last book.  EVERYTHING changes in this book, so you HAVE to read the first one to get this!!!  I was a bit dissapointed with the ending, i.e. who the main character chose in the end, and what all transpired, as well as the lack of closure to the book.  (I think I was mainly dissapointed, because *SPOILER* the author leads you to think Lord Ido is a changed man, and when he confesses he's not, it's weak, with little factual support behind it...  I know I would've wrote the book differently, at least keeping him alive.)  Overall, though, life-changing, no pun intended.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!

Well I just finished up Karen Traviss' new Halo book and must admit I was a bit deflated. There was a bit too much politics in this one and not enough action. I was starting to have TCW Senate Episode flashbacks.

I am now into another John Ringo Series called There will be Dragons. It is not nocking my socks off so far.

I am starting to take some time lately to just read and I have read:

The Morningstar Zombie Series (really liked these two books)

The John Ringo Council War Series (hope he adds to this)

The Hunger Games Trilogy (really awesome, but I hated the ending which could just be me)

Micro (last Michael Chriton Book before he died) which was great

and now I am onto a new Terry Brooks books about combatting an evil place called the Bourne and the Quiet which so far seems to be holding my interest and seems to be a very long read (small print) and I keep meaning to get the Lost Tribe of the Sith Books (free on kindle, but no printed versions!) so I might break down and get a kindle. It also seems to be the way the SW books are going. I am not sure I like all Eprint as the paper page is so preferred to me right now.

I would love to hear what good books other folks of similar interests have read lately.

Just finished "Darth Plagueis"

Elias and I are in the middle of "Shadows of the Empire" and either #7 or #8 of the Dark Horse Clone Wars comic collection books.  I think they're called Republic or something like that.  I know the one we're reading has Quinlan Vos on the cover.  Just not sure what number it is.   We already finished all the prior editions and #9 will wrap it up.

I just reread Shadows of the Empire myself after Wookie Balls' last Guri addition. That is a great novel. Indeed it does leave a few unfinished character ends for me though.

Just finished Darth Plagueis, I enjoyed the book but thought the ending was kind of had a rushed feeling. I just started World War Z and am enjoying it thus far.

World War Z is awesome. If you like it you should read some of J.L. Bourne's books.

It seems to me the Star Wars paperbacks are taking forever to come out so i've been reading the Game Of Thrones books. I am waiting for Darth Plageus in paperback though. A good Star Wars jumps ahead of the rest.

I hope to get that same book on paperback too. Might just break down and get the hardback version.

I do have a few Zombie books coming Z.A. Recht and a couple new authors. I also have another Star Carrier book coming in from Ian Douglas. If like military Sci Fi this guy is a good author too.

My favorite sci fi author was John Ringo and his Posleen War Series, but now he is caught up in other things and to be honest seems pretty arogant when fans ask about more Posleen War Series books so I may have to get a new favorite author.

There are a couple of Star Wars books that I'm waiting to come out on paperback, like Darth Plageus, and another new one by Timothy Zahn which looked real good.

On a complete different note, I recently finished "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."  I have to say, it was quite good!  As a history buff, I know a lot of Lincoln's actual history, and the fact that they took real events and meshed them very carefully with vampires came to be a great read.  I cannot WAIT for the movie to hit now!

I just seen the trailer to Abe Lincoln at the Prometheus midnight showing. It looks better than it sounds. I just started reading Red Harvest. I still think Star Wars and Zombies shouldn't mix. My appreciation of zombie stuff has gone up since I started watching The Walking Dead, but there's too much cool stuff left in Star Wars that the zombies should be kept to a minimum.

You know Mike I had the same impression when I first read the synopsis of Death Troopers, but after reading Death Troopers and Red Harvest I have to say they fit pretty well. To each his own though and the SW Verse is so vast and varied who knows what else we will see. Its probably only a matter of time till we see Lycans and Vampires.

I liked Death Troopers too, and i'm about halfway through Red Harvest and love it so far. With the whole Clone Wars zombie stuff (Zombie Geonosians) , the Old Republic's Rakghouls, and now books it's just a bit much.
To each their own. Personally, I cannot get enough of Jedi, Sith, and Stormtroopers!

I am recovering from sinus surgery, and as I had to get a skin graph my doctor has said no outside stuff and minimal inside movement and no heavy lifting so I am reading. I finished up the Game of Thrones Series to date and am now reading Darth Plaeguis even though I don't know how to spell it. It is pretty cool seeing the background of Palps. I also found out who I had been called Darth Plaeguis is actually Darth Tenebrous (the Bith). There is a ton of alien stuff in this book so I bought (at Ollies) a compendium of SW Tech, Droids, and Aliens for ten bucks. It was a steal as the book is huge! Plaeguis is a Munn by the way. I though he was a Bith. Duh. I learn something new every day.
