Title: SithLord229's Custom Figures
Post by: SithLord229 on September 17, 2009, 11:17:56 AM
Hi guys, this is my first post here on the yards after Jay (wraith_nine) finally persuaded me to join up & post a few of my customs.
Go easy on me  :) LOL

I decided to weather & paint the hair of a Droidbait/CT-327 figure & also slapped a holster on his leg & a warhammer Blood Angels decal on his armour. Here are the results...

(http://i30.tinypic.com/f5848o.jpg) (http://i29.tinypic.com/2v96h05.jpg) (http://i26.tinypic.com/mm3gwp.jpg)

I also decided to weather a Clone Wars V-19 Starfighter.

(http://i30.tinypic.com/19vb7p.jpg) (http://i26.tinypic.com/2z6to39.jpg) (http://i28.tinypic.com/2dte09.jpg)

All feedback & constructive criticism welcome.  :)

that weathering looks amazing, I'd love to hear how you pulled that off.

the decal looks great on the fig.  Is it a "wet and stick" or just a plain old sticker decal?  I've also seen people use printed paper and white elmers glue to do the same thing, did you do it that way?

here at the shipyards we love to see tutorials and love to see the progression of a custom as much as the final result!  Unless you're keeping somekind of craft/trade secret you don't want others to monopolize on please share your  techniques!

go ahead and browse around there are alot of great customizers here... oh and vote on the contest thread! lol every vote counts, even from the noobs!

btw, welcom to the shipyards!

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

The weathering was done using a simple inkwash & then a quick drybrush, with a coat of satin varnish just to seal it all in.

The decals were given to me by Jay & they are simple wet & stick decals, again coated in varnish to seal it.

I've been lurking on the forums for a while now, so am familiar with some of the guys' work, top notch stuff here.  O0

I'm a huge fan of Jay's work, so, to see his apprentice posting work on this level is definitely a thrill.
You've been learning from one of the best, and it shows. Your paint skills are fantastic!
I love to see fine work, and your work more than qualifies.
Anyone that Jay befriends has to be an excellent bloke. A blind person can tell that you've got the skills to pay the bills. I really like what you've done.
I, personally, would love to emulate Jay's style, but I will never be on that level, but you, mate, are on course to create some marvelous customs.
Thanks for coming to the Yards, and sharing your beautiful work.

Cheers,
Barry

Hello Sithlord! Glad to see you in the shipyards, I'm subscribed to your youtube channel and love your reviews! Great looking customs, can't wait to see more! I'm especially liking that V-19 Torrent weathering job... I always thought that ship looked way too clean for Star Wars!

Thanks r1bb1t, that kind of praise is more than appreciated. I don't have much confidence when it comes to painting as my hand tends to shake like a sh*tting dog & I have made no end of mistakes, so to get praise from you guys is such a confidence booster!
Thankyou!

Here is a spur of the moment custom, ages ago I hollowed out the helmet that came with the TCW Wave 1 Obi-Wan & put it on a Wave 1 clone trooper.
He's been sitting on my shelf for a while so since I've been bitten by the customs bug, here he is all painted up.

steve that clone trooper is superb!  i am so proud of you mate  everyone has this ability (even you r1bb1t ..lol) all it takes is practice and a little bit of belief in yourself  ..above all dont be afraid to make mistakes as most can be rectified . well done steve mate your well and trully on the path  :)
Title: Re: SithLord229's Custom Figures
Post by: spudafett on September 18, 2009, 09:45:03 AM
Yeah, mistakes with the painting can be easilly fixed!  ... mistakes with the dremel and exacto knife usually draw blood. ;) lol

Man that weathering technique is amazing.  I'm definately going to have to copy that in my clones from now on.

I read somewhere that hasbro won't be doing any dirty weathered figs anymore because of a large cost at the factory level preventing them from doing it... that's Bull if you ask me.  Hell they've raised the price point on the figs enough you'd think they could afford it, not to mention they are cutting corners everywhere with articulation to save on tooling costs too...  blah...

anyways, as for the shaking hands I can relate to ya there.  I shake horribly as well, I probably will have carpal tunnel sendrom at 30!  I've been meaning to try the tape and paint method and use a guide to get better strait lines, it's just most of the time what I'm painting isn't a strait line!

Title: Re: SithLord229's Custom Figures
Post by: SithLord229 on September 18, 2009, 11:38:05 AM
I don't believe that.

He does Kurgan, I have witnessed it myself, both via webcam & in the flesh. lol, wouldn't think it though to look at some of your outcomes Jay. I still find it hard to believe lol.

Spudafett, I use the tape & paint method too, it gives me a lot more confidence to paint straight lines, just have to be careful the paint doesn't bleed underneath the tape.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  :)

Here is a group shot of all my recent customs, enjoy!

theres only one thing.  The helmets are suposed to already have com devices built in.  I would leave the wire on there but cut off the microphone part, I just personally think it's not needed.

but it's still awesome as hell

All of these clones look gorgeous, and it's quite easy to see Jay's influence.
The clones are awesome, but have you ever considered emulating his gift for astromechs?
Just because I have every single droid he's ever done tattooed on my body, I don't consider myself a super fan of his work, just someone who admires his talent.
Anyway, I'd love to see what you could do with droids.
Keep up the great work.

Post by: SithLord229 on September 22, 2009, 02:04:58 AM
Thanks r1bb1t,

I have just tried a droid custom but failed epically at it.
I used an old droid that Jay gave me when I went to visit him, I gave it a black base coat... which looked OK until I started painting the head.
I also find the panels extremely tricky to paint, so I think I will be sticking with my simple Clone Customs, although thank you for the kind words!

I received 2 Clone customs today from my mate Jon, who goes by the name tintond on YouTube.
I commissioned a couple of customs from him & he came back with a Jump Trooper Commander & a Phase II Clone...
He also sent out a Phase I Clone a while back so here he is amongst the newbies
Enjoy!

Hehe, no they weren't quite "commissioned" as I stated earlier, I learnt from Jay that what transpired is known as a "trade commission." I'll be sending Jon some custom fodder in exchange for these figures.

Very nice paint apps to that droidbait fig.

I don't think you will see one, Devin, as I believe it was actually an echo fig that was ganked from the factory prior to the handprint paint app was applied.the droidbait name was just coined by the eBay seller for these ill-gotten figures.

Sort of, although the body is much skinnier & the head is smaller. The helmet is also much more solid & the plastic that the overall figure is made from is much softer than the real Echo.

Hehe, thanks Dan, although its Steve not Lee lol. I understand you must have gotten confused from our flash chat a moment ago. No worries.
The weathering was done by simply grinding a brush, lightly covered in black paint, into the figure & wiping away excess paint to make it look realistic, then covered the weathering in a coat of satin varnish to seal it in.

Here is my Custom Shadow Trooper (Clone Wars) covered from head to toe in chaos black & codex grey...
Enjoy!

Heres a couple of customs I recently completed.
The 1st is an ARF Trooper, based on the Trooper seen in the Republic Heroes video game.
The 2nd is a repaint of an old Commander Cody I painted in Codex Grey, this time around I've gone over the grey in Red Gore, given him holsters & a shoulder pauldron. I also swapped out his head for a Clone Trooper Boil head that I had spare.

Enjoy!

(http://i35.tinypic.com/2m30fb9.jpg) (http://i36.tinypic.com/2wdulph.jpg)

Thanks to a little help from Jay, I have also named these Troopers.
The ARF Trooper is Sgt. Sketch of the 121st Recon Scouts & the red coloured Clone is Lt. Nedal of the 44th Airbourne Assault Corps.

After a few words of encouragement from Jules, I decided to knock up a quick "Hangarbay'd" influenced image.
As I said in a previous post, my skills with photoshop are more centred around Corporate identity & logos, image manipulation, while in some areas I am good at it, tends to be a weakness of mine, especially when it comes to incorporating 2 photos into 1.

If you could leave me some feedback & tips on how to improve on this Jules, that would be most appreciated.

great start buddy.  I find that when blending two photos together making them look grainy and out of focus helps make the two immages blur together.  The end result isn't very crisp and not at all fancy but it makes the immage more believable as one piece instead of two splices.

for instance with your immage I would apply a gaussian blur or sharpen mask... to break up the edges of the figure and the background.

I'd also leave out the feet of the figure so that the eye doesn't have a reference to where the figure starts and the background immage starts.  Think of it as a bust up portrait with a static background, you don't show the fake floor in the photo.

hope that helps, that's just some of the tricks I use... I have no idea if they are what I should do or what is deemed professional... but over the years working with offbrand photo software this is what I have found to be usefull.
Title: Re: SithLord229's Custom Figures
Post by: XizorsVirago on October 14, 2009, 09:43:10 PM
Haha, I like your tactic of  "blur everything together" :D  I wouldn't blur stuff, because I think it's more annoying to look at than a slightly mis-matched picture, but that's just me. I like spudd's idea of cutting off above the feet, it does cancel out some perspective problems, but if you want to leave them in, just flip the shadow to the other side since the sun is above his right shoulder. (Try to imagine a line coming from the sun, hitting the clone, and passing through him, and the shadow should be parallel to that)

Also, if you can, re-taking the picture with the lighting coming from behind would give a good effect, just have the main light source in about the same place as your sun and have a reflection source (like a piece of paper that bounces the main light onto his front) on the opposite side. Or, of you don't want to re-take the picture, you could always just take out the sun and swing the shadow around behind him, moving off to his right (hopefully that makes sense).

A way you can make it look less like the trooper is photoshopped in is to take a blurry-edged brush (with a really small blur radius) and go around him so it takes just a bit of the crisp edge off, but don't overdo it... you just want to make him look less pasted in there, not really noticeably blurry.

Hi guys, just a quick fire custom from me this time round.
My old TCW Count Dooku had an accident the other day which involved his leg snapping off, so I have replaced him with the newer repack version.
This time around, I've added the ROTS cape to him which helps him stand better & look better at the same time.
I know its not much but I thought I'd share it anyway.

Sithlord,

Awesome customs as always...

I've just caught up with your image, thanks for asking for some advice...

If I were to be truthful, you can do much better, you have all of the photoshop skills, you just need to apply then to the image or images.

The image is a work of art, you need to treat it as such. Start thinking about the shadows more, the light source is above and to the right of the figure, yet the figure shows light coming from the opposite side. The guy is in a desert, yet he has a blue, cold tone.

I use tools like colour balance, gaussian blur, I lasso part of the image (using feather) and add or take away light (using Brightness/Contrast) and I use the Spotlight in Lighting Effects to add light source.

I would really love to see more people presenting their customs as works of art, and you SithLord are better then me when it comes to graphics, you should be awesome at this too.

Have just completed some custom work on a Legacy Collection Commander Faie.
Nothing major, just a few part swaps. Will post pics soon!

As mentioned prior, here is my latest custom.
Nothing major here, just a simple parts swap & chop job. Had to cut parts of Commander Faie's belt up to accomodate the sachel or whatever its called from Cmdr. Neyo. Enjoy!

Sometimes the simplest customs are the most effective.
Hasbro does that all the time to make new stock figures, don't they?

Here is an update of a custom I made a few weeks ago, but never got round to posting on the yards.
I simply swapped out the arms of a Denal figure with an ARF Trooper, gave him a Commander Gree bandolier, and hey presto! a 501st ARF Trooper.
Today, I felt like distinguishing him further, so I gave him a Captain Rex kama & gave him a name...

ARF Captain Tysen of the 501st Legion

(http://i48.tinypic.com/29en38h.jpg) (http://i50.tinypic.com/20krdrr.jpg)

Then with the arms I had left from the ARF Trooper, I gave them to the armless Denal & created a standard Clone with a jet pack.
Ahh, the wonders of boil & pop!  ;D

Sweet/ i like the ARF trooper. his name is Boomer

Hey guys, just a quick update.
Here are some new customs I have recently finished.

Jet Trooper (Clone Trooper Denal body, ARF Trooper arms & Clone Trooper Boil head)
Standard Clones (Clone Trooper Echo body & Thire & Rex heads.)
I used nail polish remover to get rid of Rex's hair & Echos handprint.

(http://i48.tinypic.com/bhn6z7.jpg) (http://i47.tinypic.com/1268fuc.jpg)

Also, thanks to Jay (Wraith9) for the advice, here is a Senate Commando.

(http://i45.tinypic.com/2n07g3c.jpg) (http://i49.tinypic.com/9uxj7m.jpg)

I still have the stock of the rifle to paint brown, although I don't have any brown paint at the moment.
Hope you guys like them.

Just made a slight modification to the Senate Commandos helmet. Because I used electrical tape for the visor, the helmet was still very flimsy. I just went round the inside of the helmet with a brush & some super glue to harden it & it's worked a treat.

Jay (Wraithnine) came to visit me this week & we went to see Star Wars in Concert at the Sheffield Arena, in Sheffield UK. After an absolutely awesome night at the arena & heading out on a toy run, we came back & did some customs. Jay helped me to create this guy, who is known as Commander Fulcrum of the 24th Republic Light Infantry. Jay painted the helmet & pauldron, then varnished & weathered him & I painted the bodywork. We also added a decal to the helmet to give him some flavour.
Enjoy!

SithLord229,

Great customs mate. I love the Camo Clone. The red one is cool also. I like the Helmet on him and the sticker makes it that much better.

Did you watch Wraith (Jay) do the Camo Clone? I would of liked to see how he makes the lines some are straight some T's and some X's etc. Makes it look great.

Darth Creatine (Jon)

PS: Star Wars in Concert is coming here also  on May 16th. I got tickets to the show for me and the Wifey. We get to meet Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) before the show and such. 2 hour prop/museum tour before the doors open for everyone else. Will be a great day for me. Wifey just came to help me since I need the help due to my Disability's/Problems.

Picked up a second Commander Bly as part of a BOGOF offer today, so I made a 327th Trooper for him. Hoping to pick up another one soon to make another trooper.

(http://i44.tinypic.com/e0so7c.jpg) (http://i42.tinypic.com/oz6ok.jpg)

Also, on the subject of Bly, using the head I had left over from my second Bly, I removed his cheek markings & added his head to my custom Commander Fulcrum to give him a more unique head.

(http://i39.tinypic.com/fuxkr9.jpg) (http://i39.tinypic.com/mtqujs.jpg)

I've also updated a couple of older customs with some new heads & revised weathering job.

Hope you guys like them.

no... lol i have to leave something for you guys to collect, thou i do admit they have grown on me but my passion is ROTS clones
and it does sadden me that i cant do this kind of thing to make my clones look like individuals i could do so many but "thems is the breaks" as they say lol
but then again i would never be able to come up with over 1000 cool names for each one of them , let alone remember them... pmsl

nice clones steve!

Thanks Guys! Glad you all like these new updates. When I eventually get round to doing a second 327th Clone, I'll be leaving the pauldron off & leaving the chest stripe in tact, to add a bit of variation to my ranks.
I also have a custom trooper on the way from Jay (Wraith9) who will no doubt post pics of his creation here on the Yards.

Had the ultimate experience of inconvenience today. Went into my local store to get another Bly using the BOGOF offer, they also had a Matchstick which would have been great for customs too, but sods law dictated that the BOGOF offer had stopped... Bloody typical. I don't know now when I will get chance to do a second 327th Trooper, as I don't really like paying full price for custom fodder.

BOGOF means Buy one Get one free. I didn't want to pay the full price of a figure when I will only be using it for customs, so the buy one get one free offer is perfect for picking up fodder.

Jay, that Commander is the bee's knees. Really impressed, can't wait to add him to "customs  corner".

(I'm working on a couple of deals to try & acquire a Rys Backpack but for these photos I used the one I already have, until I score a second backpack, this new trooper has Jek's bandolier on.)

Wraith .  . . I quoted this one instead of the one with the photos so they wouldn't be duplicated . . . . but just wanted to say Hats off on that, man.   Very nice work with the decals.   You capture the idea of making each clone unique, despite being clones.  Very cool!!!!!!!!    One question . . ..  . how do you get all the photos to flow together like that?   It almost looks like you posted it as one pic which contained all the photos pasted together (?)     Thanks for any advice, and again I might be your biggest fan here at the yards . . . .but I am sure you get that all the time.

No, thats what I mean by mock ups. I used the parts I already have to create a representation of what the figure will look like when I have the duplicate parts, the way you see them in the photos is how they will look when my spare parts arrive.

Dude, when I got to your age (I'm showing my age now) I was going clubbing and partying all of the time.... come to think of it, I didn't stop until I reached about 28...my love of Sci-fi etc was shelved for many years.

Hopefully you won't be away for years and years, but now is the time when you need to be out there, having fun in the real world, getting life experiences. You only live once my friend!!!

Its nice to know that you still pop your head round the door from time to time though!

I agree with Jules 100%. I was partying with my friends, joined the military for 4 years, and then started a family. Wasn't until about two years ago that I started to get back into Star Wars at age 30. The last Star Wars figure I bought before two years ago was probably in 1984 or 85.

My love of Sci-Fi hasn't been shelved, Jules trust me! LOL! I'm still spending gazillion quid on Star Wars & still enjoying my time away from it too!
I'm still in the thick of things over on YouTube, got a ton of stuff planned for 2011 over there, just nothing new custom wise. I guess the fire for that area of collecting has fizzled out at my end. Nice to hear from you mate!
