Title: My Imperial Army-Build W.I.P.
Post by: JDeck on April 10, 2017, 07:27:20 PM
I've been working on building a 3.75" Imperial Army off and on for a few years now.  Some are customs, but most are factory. I wanted at least a squad of each trooper type, and all the major high ranking officers.
I've had them sitting in a box, but the box started to overflow, so I bought a bunch of acrylic stands, and made room on a shelf.  I have them split between two shelves, Emperor/Navy on the top shelf, and Vader/Army/Stormtrooper corps, on the bottom. I still have plenty of room left so I'm not finished yet. I really don't know how far I'll go. I decided not to collect sandtroopers, Snowtroopers, or scarif troopers, because being environment specific, they would look strange all on the same shelf.
I still need to install better lighting, probably a cool white LED.

Bottom shelf. The lighting is bad, but ill fix that one day. I might even build a background, and floor for it. Who knows.

Thanks guys!!!
I have a slight update. A few more officers, a few more troopers. I still need a more of the comic pack figures. Also I need to make a some custom officers. I have a couple on deck to be made. I can't wait until TVC, I'm pretty sure they will make a Sim Aloo, and hopefully an SA Krennic. I hope they do a realistic version of Agent Kallus.

Awesome collection! And nicely displayed!

I recently caught the Imperial collecting bug, Rogue One drew me in...hopefully I'll post some pictures soon of my troops. Yours is an inspiration! I always love beautiful collections and the chance to marvel at such armies!

I set up the Stormtrooper platoon. I definitely need a bigger boat, but I just wanted to get them out of the box to see how they look.

From left to right by ten man squads; Mortar squad, Grenadier squad, Platoon HQ/Heavy repeater squad, Light repeater/Assault squad, incinerator/Assault squad.
Platoon HQ acts as a defensive position, suppressing enemy fire, lead by the platoon commander.  While the Mortar/Grenadier squads flank right, the Assault Squads flank left, lead by Platoon leaders.  Each squad is divided into fire teams. Fire team A, lead by a Sergeant, B lead by Corporal with a speciality weapon.  The formation is subject to change when I add scout squads, Shadow stormtroopers, death troopers and maybe Scarif/Coastal Defender troopers. Plus AT-AT, AT-ST/Cavalry units for a full Company. But I need a proper display.

Im thinking about using a TV stand or somethinglike that to make an imperial base display.

In a trade deal with Tamer I reached the 100 stormtrooper threshold, plus the commander. Now I'll work on 200 lol.

Awesome thank you for the link! I need at least 10. I'm trying to figure out my reconnaissance platoon. I currently have a scout trooper squad and 10 AT-ST drivers. But that's only 20 out of a platoon of 50. I might fill it with mechanics or stormtroopers. Idk. But I can always use cheap stormtroopers. I pay on average $15 USD per stormtrooper, this will help lower the cost per average.

Absolutely love it!!!

Thank you Ant!

I was taking inventory, so i decided to set up my non stormtroopers, in an Armored company. I bought enough stormtroopers to take the mimban stormtrooper and mudtrooper squads out of the stormtrooper platoon. In Solo, the mimban troopers were part of an Armored Division. So i have from left to right, Patrol troopers, Scout troopers, shadow troopers, AT-DT drivers (mimban troopers), Army troopers (mud troopers), AT-ST drivers,  AT-AT drivers, ITT drivers.
I'll probably throw in some scanning crew figures, for maintenance guys to round to 100. So that'll be 100 stormtroopers, 100 man armored company. I need to take inventory of my navy now.

Yeah, I need them to rerelease, AT-AT Commander and Assault tank driver. I know when the Din Djarin in Juggernaut driver disguise drops, I'll have to scramble to get about 10-20 before they're gone forever.  That'll make a solid armored company.

Once the 16 stormtroopers I ordered come in, I can add the shore troopers in with the scouts, then put the shadow troopers in with the navy.

I started setting up the navy/high command, but they all fell over, because the damn k2so is so top heavy.

Here's my army in it's entirety. I still need a shelf. I think I'll get an industrial shelf from home depot 48x72x24. That'll be big enough to but 200 men or more per shelf. That's a big army! Somehow an industrial shelf seems the right environment for the faceless troops of the Imperial war machine. I think it works.

Yeah I think so. Maybe if I get really inventive I can make walls. I was hoping Spacewalls was going to launch a bunch of kits when they went legit, but that didn't happen.

I'm going to mount the figures using Gorilla mounting putty. I tested it on my Shoretroopers a while back. Not one fell, no residue on the figures or the surface. Yeah I have a friend who has a massive toy room who lives near me (Jake James) who used those types of Industrial Shelves to display his massive armies. It looks fantastic.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Holy cow! That is a lot of troops! Thank you also for the idea with the mounting putty. Forum member Mosh (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10225.msg229477#msg229477) was so kind and suggested using the same method as we discussed earlier here (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10225.msg229290#msg229290).
The rack you ordered looks perfect for this purpose. Cannot wait to see it all built up!

He was wondering about silicone, which would work but it would be permanent. So i suggested using the mounting putty. Then there were concerns about residue, but I tested it and no residue or discoloration. Can probably use it for most dioramas with a hard surface.

That Gorilla mounting putty info. is really helpful. Thanks for experimenting for the rest of us.  ;) I think walls would be cool. That whole space walls thing was too bad.

If there is any residue, you take a glob and pat it to pick up the left overs.
This putty has been on since July, came off clean. The little dimple is from the injection molding.

But while I'm on the subject of shoretroopers. Why didn't hasbro make the Andor shoretrooper in 3.75? They call 3.75 the world building scale, and make more variants in 6". For imperial troops I'll buy anywhere from 5 to 30+.

Nice, I'll definitely try this putty to position some figures on dioramas in the future. And I'm more than optimistic, that Hasbro will give us another Shoretrooper on ANDOR cardback.
Am also waiting for a Scarif playset, maybe with a palm tree, some cargo craits and even another gate?
Endor "bunker" wink wink  ;)

Im not expecting anything from Rogue One. We still don't have a majority of main characters. I'll make my own Scarif.

I got my shelf. It's the Gladiator 5-tier. It cost me $200, and they must charge by the pound.  It uses hooks and slots for connections, which is fast and easy, but after assembly, there's a little wobble. Just from the give between the hooks and slots. Needs cross beams. This is probably why people don't use garage shelves for displays, but with the mounting putty, the figures will stay in place.  Im putting my imperial base diorama stuff on top, and vehicles on the bottom. Still don't know how I want to use the deluxe emperor throne room thing.  The spacing is a little tight, but I can fit 200 per shelf.

Unfortunately, I agree with you about the likelihood of more Scarif stuff, JDeck. I think we will probably eventually get each of the main figures, but it could be a very, very long time.

I like the shelves a lot. It's a bummer about the wiggle factor, but it's not insurmountable.

So it's 2 against 1, gentlemen. I stay optimistic for more Rogue One goodness in TVC: Krennic, Baze Malbus, Mr Saw Gerrera and even a Scarif Playset. I can definitely see the brand team making those.

That definitely looks like a high-end rack! Never heard of charging a storage rack by its weight, but one can tell, this is the best stuff out there for smaller logistics/office purposes.
I paid 25 bucks for a similar one, but it's not that stable by far! I also love the height you chose for the floors. It's amazing that a single rack can store a whole garrison! Nice arrangement with the Emperor above and the vehicles on the floor, especially because these Scout Walkers tend to fall over.
You're working on some truly awesome projects at the moment, JDeck!
Thanks for sharing all the fun with us!

Unfortunately, I agree with you about the likelihood of more Scarif stuff, JDeck. I think we will probably eventually get each of the main figures, but it could be a very, very long time.

I like the shelves a lot. It's a bummer about the wiggle factor, but it's not insurmountable.

Their focus is on OT and Mandalorian, so they say. Their so backed up it's not even funny.
Yeah I might be able to hammer it down for a snugger fit, but I think it's just how it is. $200 for a wobbly shelf.

I was joking about charging by the pound. In other words it was heavy. Luckily I have a truck and dolly, so I could move it upstairs by myself.
Your optimism is commendable. I'm too jaded at this point to have any optimism at all.

I would think. $200 doesn't get you much especially at home depot. I did get a good deal on the folding table I'm using for photography. I think they rung it up wrong.

I started putting my Shoretrooper/stormtrooper company together. Everytime you see shoretroopers there are stormtroopers mixed in, so this is the logical solution I came up with.  Got 2 platoons up. Im going to put them in rank formation as opposed to file. I decided to make Shoretrooper= NCO, Shoretrooper Squad leaders= senior NCO, Shoretrooper Captain= CO/platoon leader. Stormtroopers=private. Then each platoon has an attached 5 man section,  1st platoon incinerator troopers, 3rd Rocket launcher Troopers,  2nd Mortar troopers, 4th heavy shoretroopers. Having each platoon HQ (front row) with an E-WEB team (I reckon 4 men can carry an E-WEB). I think the rank formation makes it more interesting, than having each type in a column. I just have to finish setting up the other 2 platoons, with the exception of 10 troopers on preorder. Im using the Stormtrooper Commander as the Company Commander.   Commander is used very loosely, but I'm taking it literally as a rank between Captain and Major.
To break the monotony, I started separating and laying out the other 2 shelves.  Navy/high command and armored/scout/patrol shelf.

I like that organization totally makes sense. I like the rank formation idea as well. This will be an imposing display when done :)

I was watching AOTC the other day and I payed close attention to the clone formations. Granted they were in the millions where my garrison is in the hundreds, I figure I'll use the same formation. The OT didn't make things very clear. I try to make sense of the military structure of the Empire and with every movie it contradicts itself. For example Moff Gergerrod had a Colonel/Navy Captain rank plaque, because of a mixup in wordrobe. When gerjerrod and Piett come out soon, Piett will have a higher rank according to the plaque, even though Gergerrod is the equivalent to Tarkin in ANH. It's a mess. My solution is I'll swap heads. My Garrison takes place 10BBY, (seeing Thrawn, Tarkin, Reva are in) when gerjerrod was a Navy Admiral and Piett was a Captain.  You kind of have to fudge ranks around in army building.

This looks awesome already! AOTC didn't age that well though. I had to think of your project when I went to the DIY store last time (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=10416.msg231758#new). They had some decent racks for 30-40€ there.

I think once there's weight on the shelves it's sturdier. Each shelf is supposed to hold 1000lbs. Really it should be mounted to the wall, but I'm not doing that. I think this is the biggest shelf on the market.  I went by AOTC rank formation because the OT was too inconsistent, and everyone puts their armies in file formation, and I always have to be different.

I finished setting up the Stormtrooper Company of 4 platoons of 50 troops in 5 10 troop squads.
Im still waiting for 5 mortar troopers and 5 ANH Stormtroopers.  Takes almost an hour to set up one platoon.

Also I set up the Navy shelf. Im still waiting for 6 more Darktroopers. Waiting to preorder Piett and Gerjerrod.
One more shelf to put up. Armored company, reconnaissance company, and patrol company. Basically a catch-all shelf.

This is a truly impressive Imperial deployment there! I like the Heavy Stormtroopers with Missile Launchers in the back, too. You use silicone pads to give your figures a secure stand, right?
That setup of Stormies and Shoretroopers reminds me of Rogue One. Glad you already secured some Dark Troopers, too! The Emperor must be proud!

Thank you. I'm going to make a custom rocket launcher stormtrooper or Demolition trooper they go by many names. I was thinking a female based on the only female stormtrooper ever made by hasbro with Lady Jaye from GI Joe.  Just to mix things up a little.

The way I mount the figures is using the gorilla brand mounting putty. No residue. When I first started my army I bought a bunch of stands. Most of the figures worked, except the shoretroopers. The holes were too small and shallow. Instead of buying 600 stands, and hope they fit, I used a better option. I can remove them at will, and replace them. And the shands need a certain amount of space between figures, this way I can space them any way I want. I really recommend this.  I have approximately 600 men and one pack is enough for all of them.
Also I use it sometimes for customs. If a head doesn't quite fit, or a helmet, I put a little of this putty in to secure it. Especially for temporary customs for photography. I've used it on holsters temporarily. Even imperial officer rank plaques. It stays secure and it's easily removable. I'm not trying to sound like a commercial, but Gorilla makes the best products.

You're right, Rocket Launcher Stormtrooper is the official term. Using a female Stormtrooper body will be interesting. Taking the latest TVC version and modify it with sculpting clay would be another interesting project. I wonder if Hasbro will make a female Trooper ever again especially with all the equality discussions of recent years.

Thank you so much! I was somehow missing the word putty. That's the one you mentioned earlier in this and another thread. There's something similar available here in Germany called UHU Patafix. They describe them as glue pads. I'm definitely going to get some of those and of the ones from Gorilla.
My host dad in Michigan is a big fan of Gorilla glue and tape as well! I say it's totally justified.
You guys have some amazing brands in the U.S.

Yeah I was wondering if gorilla was available or not in Europe, but I'm sure patafix would work too. I wouldn't recommend the blue kind, I remember using that and it left blue marks everywhere.

The female stormtrooper I'm going to use the Legacy EE exclusive Joker Squad Jes. It's a decent figure, the only female stormtrooper figure. I've never seen a yellowed one.  She's slimmer and shorter than the standard stormtrooper. . She's expensive though. I have 2 now.  There isn't a whole lot of variation in stormtrooper army building, so figures like this are pretty cool.

The Pulse Exclusive Hoth rebel 4-pack heads fit okay on the new Stormtroopers. The Rebel Fleet trooper heads fit a little loose, with some modifications they could be perfect, but temporarily, for photography they will work. They're good looking heads, well painted and unique. Id like to represent stormtroopers as people, not faceless, nameless soldiers. Some of the best war movies are German made antiwar ww2 movies. The German soldiers are portrayed as normal people thrown into a bad situation. I was watching Generation War the other day and I'd love to see a Star Wars version of something like that.

I was always afraid that my Joker Squad yellows. I got the set from EE back in the day when I lived in Michigan. It was on clearance and I got it for $27,84, whcih were 20,65€ back then. A single carded figure cost 12.99€ in 2010. So this was a steal of a deal for 7 figures. Thanks for sharing your experience with Joker Squad. I do hope that they don't yellow.

Brilliant idea with the head-swaps! Thanks for sharing! I would love to see more of your Scarif diorama as well! I haven't seen the complete dio, yet, but the details blew me away already.

Thanks! Last year I didn't get a whole lot done. Between renovating and moving, I had everything packed up for several months. I would like to make a Scarif bunker, but that might be above my skill set. None the less, I still have enough trees, bushes and crates to make some scarif scenes. I think I'll start a Toy Photography thread, because it's not quite diorama building.

Thanks! I could dremel the heads out a little. They sit high and a little tight, but then I'd have a bunch of headless rebels.  They fit better on the Morak drivers, who then can easily be made into Mudtroopers or field officers. They're a little loose, but I can put a little of that gorilla putty into the head, for a tighter fit, without doing anything permanent. These figures are getting too expensive to mess around too much. I might see what swapping neck barbells from morak drivers to stormtroopers would do.

Thanks! It's never too late. Yeah I'm trying to give each platoon a unique specialty weapon section. Incinerator, rocket launcher, heavy shoretrooper and I have 5 mortar troopers coming. If a new trooper variant comes out I'll replace the heavy shoretroopers first.

Set up the logistical company, with the exception of the tank commander NCOs (Aldhani Mission Andor) on preorder. 3 platoons of 4 Assault Tanks, plus 1 each mimban and mudtrooper squads for support. A patrol platoon with a squad of patrol troopers and 4 squads consisting of an ITT crew, a small stormtrooper squad and a K-series support droid to round out the company.

I set up the armored company. Kind of thin. I put the all black shadow stormtroopers with the scout platoon, and the inferno squad trooper as the platoon leader. I might get more scouts when the new one comes out. They said it's improved, but it looks the same to me outside the helmet.
Hopefully they'll make some kind of new tank driver variant so I can fill the space up a little more. I wish they'd repack the AT-AT commander. I could use at least 5 more. Maybe they'll make a Veers with the new officer sculpt.

Everything I have is set up now. I'll add some kind of lighting, then wait for preorders. I still want to add walls, but it would cost too much for 3d printed walls. I'll just make my own imperial base walls.

Once my preorders come in I'll have roughly 550. 10x Aldhani Mission Andor, 5x Mortar troopers, 4x scout so far. My objective is 600, 200 per shelf. I need more allocated to the Navy shelf and the Armored company. So any new stormtroopers, will go to navy. Not sure how many Piett/Jergerrod figures I'll get, probably between 1-10. Probably get a few Remnant Scouts, one more clean scout. Then hope to fill the holes with whatever new comes until I reach 600.

I got 6/10 of my Andor Aldhani troopers. I'm making them my logistical engineers. So I made 3 into officers. From left to right; Commander, first lieutenant, second lieutenant. I made rank plaques using green stuff, and painted them yellow and red because technically they're in engineering.   Im not sure what I'll do with the rest. Maybe NCO arm bands, red, and white.
