Title: Dioramas by Dag
Post by: Dag Marus on July 14, 2016, 08:44:53 AM
Started this a few months ago and love how it turned out.  I'm working with a friend to have new footcups 3d printed so it isn't just cardboard inserts giving the appearance.  At some point, if I can spare the scratch for it, I'd love to add the missing AT-AT hatches.  (I got this one for super cheap as it was pretty much bare bones.

This one is still a bit in progress, as there will be more Forest a bit further back and I want to add more standing trees when I do manage to find time.

Thanks for the welcome guys!  I've got plans to upgrade the Hangar Bay stuff to have more movie-esque backgrounds so everything isn't pegboard and plug outlets.  I'd like to eventually have sky backdrops to add a bit to the outdoor dioramas as well.

Here's another I got around to uploading.

You sir are unhinging my jaw! I am working my way through these one at a time.

Today I got the Hoth Dio on the front pages and I just love the action. Trust me I will feature all the dios you have posted here. I can't imagine the cost in action figures alone for some of this. What a labor of love!

Thanks!   Yes, it's wool yarn glued and then hit with textured spray paint.  I was surprised by how well it worked.  It's a tedious process, but it looks pretty good.

Put down a layer of baking soda and did a sort of lighting test (Provided by BB-8's "torch").  I plan on adding more "snow" and then doing a backdrop to give it a little more atmosphere.

Nice work! Very dynamic poses for the duelists! I look forward to seeing your trash compactor! That is certainly one of many dioramas I still have planned in my head. I am looking forward to seeing how you are going to tackle the 'water'. I was going to use one inch soft cushion foam and use an xcato blade to make cuts in it for the figures to put their legs in to give the illusion they are knee deep. If you have not come up with something, feel free to use that idea. I don't know if that would work outside of my head but feel free. Again, nice job!

Thank you guys.  This feedback has helped me through a VERY rough day.

As for the Trash Compactor, I had a couple ideas.  Like using saran wrap with holes punched in it and "garbage" piled on top where I could put the legs through.  I considered just making it non-adjustable and have the walls in a stationary position, but I kind of like that I can move them in and have them threaten to flatten the quartet.  I think we the clear plastic I could probably achieve the watery look and still have it be adjustable.

I've got some big things planned if I can get the money together.  (Though, after that Barge money goes bye-bye, that could be a while.)  I'm still figuring out how I can do the trash compactor with "water" and garbage but maintain the moveable walls.

I want to invest in some more of those Spacewalls and build a multi-level Death Star set up along one of the pegboard walls to add with the Emperor's arrival set up.  At some point, a buddy with a 3D printer is going to help me make the proper walls and light columns for the DSII Hangar bay.

Lots in planning, I just hope I'll be able to get to it all.

I'm currently working on a backdrop for my Hoth diorama.  It's always bugged me having just the pegboard behind the thing, so I'm doing a sort of dual layered effect with this.  This is just what I managed tonight.  I still want to go over and clean some stuff up and make it look more natural, but for 2 hour's work, this isn't bad.  I picked up this clear plastic sheeting and this is going to be the bottom layer.  the next will include a bit more foreground detail and some hazing to try and hopefully make it look less like a painting.  This is literally my first time painting anything like this, so I'm kind of nervous how it will turn out.  We'll see how how it ends up soon, I guess!

Execution on Eadu WIP:
I've always loved the landing platforms in Star Wars.  I don't know why, but I love the look of them.  Before I even considering attempting the circular glory of Bespin, I'm trying my hand at Eadu.

The base is there for this thing, but I've got a ton of detailing to do yet.  I want to cut the metal floor paneling out of plastic to more accurately the look and give it more of an industrial, sci-fi quality than painted wood.  Then there are a ton of greeblies to be added and I would LIKE to install working lights.  We'll see how that goes.

The part I didn't consider I'd have to make is Krennic's Shuttle.  My crafting skills on scratch-built ships isn't entirely there yet, so it's not as precise as I might like, but considering this is my first time trying it?  I'm not beating myself up too much.  Down the road, I'd love to remake this thing properly, but for now, after a few more details, it'll do.  It's definitely proved to me that Hasbro could make this thing pretty easily and still have it be at a decent scale to the figures.  It's a bit bigger than the Imperial Shuttle, just because of the wings, but, when painted and finished, it'll work with the figures pretty damn well.

Lots of details and lots of customizing to do yet (Gotta get me some scientists to execute!) but I'm enjoying the process.

Hoth was a brutally excellent diorama already! Now, this will be awesome, too! I really like Rogue One and seeing Krennic's Shuttle in 1/18 scale is beyond exciting!
Thanks for sharing the progress! I think we're all excited to see this develop.

Dagobah Update:
Managed to lay down a little more "realistic water" on this one.  I REALLY wish I could have it look so deluded and swampy all the time, but it will eventually dry super clear.  Love the look though!

Wow, is this 1/18 scale?!  :o It looks like you're working on several projects at the same time! The repaint of the X-WIng is decently done for itself! I worked with clear water effects from Vallejo for my swamp diorama. I mixed the epoxy with green shade from Citadel and it turned out nicely. I know what you mean. Maybe you can add some white/milky color to your clear water, too?

Awesome progress so far! I'm looking forward to seeing the fnished diorama!

LOL yeah, I have a bit of ADD like that.  I work on them when I can find the time or get the inspiration to try something new.

Yes, a second layer of clear water effects should work. I also think of using a fogger/air humidifier for my diorama. My sister had one of those once for her Halloween party. It would add nice fog effects to the Dagobah diorama, too! Let's see how I can incorporate it.

Here is a link to an example offer on eBay:

Oh wow, that is brilliant.  I'm gonna consider how I could do that.  A friend of mine took his vaporizer and blew it over the swamp and...my god, it looked perfect.  I wonder how much area one of those would cover.  There's a LOT of space there for it to cover.

They looked cheap enough to get multiples. You could just attach em all to the same surge protector and turn on em on and off at the same time.

Tamer is right! When my sister had her device (cost 12,99€ in a local store, but was probably the exact same thing), it filled the entire kettle with a diameter of 30 cm. These foggers can be very efficient. I’m gonna buy one on ebay right now. Then I can tell you how efficient it actually is. I think it should be sufficient if you place a bowl of water next to your diorama. The depth should at least be 5 cm for the fogger to work properly. You could also look for a rectangular, thin beverage (e.g. 50x7x10cm) to place behind the Diorama. Make sure to secure the wall behind the diorama against the moisture. It would look most fantastic if you lifted the Dio up to the edge of the bowl. That way the fog leaves the baverage at the same level of the swamp.
If this is too much playing with water, I think a second layer of epoxy with some white/grey added will look awesome, too!
Or you could work with both. All I want to do is to inspire and throw in some ideas of mine. Don’t want to tell you what to do.
When I build such a diorama of Dahobah I’ll definitively incorporate at least one of those foggers.
Your project looks great so far!

I'm going to buy a couple of these ultrasonic foggers without LED lights next month.
Here is some reference of how effective they are and how much fog one can generate:
They are meant to work in depths between 4 to 7 cm and use aroung 400 ml an hour.

You can use these in many ways - many possibilities. For your diorama I would get two of them to start with.
