Here a couple of my Jedi Starfighters and other custom vehicles
This one is Quinlan Vos' JSF
-
Here are some of Adi Gallia's JSF
-
Factory looking paintjobs on those JSFs, my man! I like the colors on that QV one.
-
Wow, you're full of surprises! Like Clint said, factory good on that paint, and that's a good thing!
What made you come out of the customizing closet, so to speak? Don't get me wrongo... I'm ecstatic that you did!
You can't stop now. You've got the gift; so don't hesitate to post more tip top customs!
Barry
-
awesome stuff phatty. Loveing the paint schemes... only... where are the customized pilots ;) lol
-
Wow, nice job on those jedi starfighters! I especially love Vos's color scheme. The only things I think could use a change are that the fighters need some weathering (everything needs weathering, bwahaha!), and the droid matching the starfighter is a little weird looking in my opinion. It makes me think too much of the V-wings with their little Q7 droids that were built specifically for the ship (although they actually could exit the vehicle, apparently, yay wookieepedia), but, that's just really a matter of taste. I suppose there's no reason Vos couldn't have had a personal R2 unit that he custom painted to match the ship. Kinda makes me wonder if they actually use paint in the SW universe or something more advanced... they never really mention it, do they?
-
I tried to personalize the R2 units, and didn't do them very well at all. Also, I'm horrible at weathering. I tried to follow Hangarbay's tutorial from the MF on my latest custom vehicle, but I'm not real happy with it. I'm still working on it though.
-
when it comes to weathering, DON'T OVER DO IT... it's easy to get carried away with washes and dry brushing... more than once I've ruined a project cust I just couldn't stop putting dirty spots on the piece! it came out looking like it was splattered in black paint instead of "weathered" lol.
-
Cool deal Pat, where are those weathering pics? I was anxious to see if anyone tried it.
-
I love this star fighter, they are so easy to customize and paint! Keep up the great job, I love the second one..
-
WOW!!!! :o what a wicked pair of JSF i Really love Vos' JSF , i so want to do one of them now!!
Hmm... i have a spare Obi Wan Delta 7 JSF with a hyperspace ring ;D, thanks Pat you have got my juices flowing now!!
-
Glad I could be of assistance!
-
Sad about the weathering, if we're ever online at the same time maybe we can chat about, wouldn't want to take up all your forum space with it! These totally make me want to customize a jedi starfighter or two myself... Plo Koon, Kit Fisto and Saesee Tin (my three favorite Jedi) could use Actis Interceptors, methinks!
-
Good stuff! I really like the color scheme on the green one.
-
Thanks! I have so many ideas going on in my head now, I just need to acquire the parts to do them!
-
I know *exactly* how that feels, Pat! But I have to add "and skills" to the list.
-
Well, I'm starting a new project, even with 3 other projects are in the works, but I was so excited about the concept in my mind, I just HAD to get a start on it!
I'm starting off with the POTF2 A-Wing with pilot. I don't have any WIP pics yet, but all I've done is put on a layer of light grey primer before I go to the next color. I have a grandiose plan now going on, and I need another vacation to get it all done!
-
let me take a wild guess... mcquarrie concept a-wing?
-
No, actually! I'm going with a white pearl base coat, with 2 colors to accent this ship. However, this ship is only the start of things, so we'll see how this goes...
-
Pat you got a vwing ready to be sent too. Looks like lots of custom projects going on. I want to see some pics of the SW train dio too!
-
Oh, there'll be pics of my train set as soon as I get it rolling! Seems there aren't enough hours in a day!
-
cool starfighters man, im ready to see the train set!
-
Here are the opening shots of my Vanguard A-Wing. No story behind it yet, but I'm hoping it will flesh out the way I am imagining it to! I've taken the POTF2 A-Wing and painted it with a grey primer, taping off the clear portions of the jets and cockpit windshield. From there, I've been using Tamiya White Pearl spray cans to do the main color layers. Unfortunately, I hate how the Tamiya spray cans work. They puddle and leave large pools of paint on the underside of what you are painting. I've gone through 3 cans of this stuff at $6.50/can. Not real happy with that part, but I AM happy with the overall color of it so far. You may not be able to see it from these pics, but you can slightly see hints of grey through the white, so it lends a bit of "space dust" to the overal theme already. So, here is the beginning...

-
Good start, buddy. I will be watching with interest. Why is it that tamyia, the maker of some of the best model kits in the world, just can't do paint very well?
-
I don't know, but I think I'm going to have to sand some spots down to make it look right.
-
looks good so far.... I love the streamline look of the a-wing, second to the tie interceptor the a-wing was always my favorite OTC vehicle.
-
Man I love what you did to the jedi fighters and looking forward to seeing what yo do with the A-Wing.
Ron
-
Thanks Ron! I'm adding some splashes of color already, and I'm very happy with the color choices I went with. There should be more WIP pics later this evening!
-
Looks good Pat,
-
Here is an update on my Vanguard A-Wing. I used a clear orange to paint the jets, to give it a lively appearance. I used white pearl for my main color, flat blue for major accents, and turn signal yellow for minor accents. I have to clean up the cockpit cover and add in more of the blue and a few spots of yellow yet, but here's the project so far, about 70% done. I'm loving the colors, but have to find a better white pearl paint to use: Those spray canisters were horrible. Maybe now that I have an air compressor, I can finally go out and get that airbrush and make it a LOT easier.

Man that is coming along great keep up the great work.
Ron
-
Thats looks awesome phatty!
-
Looking good Pat. I really like that orange on the jets. It is all coming together nicely.
-
I too, like the clear orange on the engines. Looks good, buddy. You don't have far to go on this, do you?
-
Thanks for the good words everyone! I'm really liking this one, and want to make an entire fleet of ships in these colors, but we'll take it one step at a time!
Just a few more touch-ups and some light weathering, and she'll be ready for action!
-
Phatty I love that a-wing amazing.
-
Ok, my Vanguard A-Wing is 98% finished: Just need to weather it. I'm not happy with it, but I've come this far and I shall finish it. That yellow just did NOT dry well on it. Too transparent. I love the orange on the jets and the flat medium blue I used, and the pearl white is what I had imagined, but will do better next time with the spray on. Anyway, here are the final results, minus the weathering...

I do like the color scheme on this. Are you using enamels on this one, Pat?
-
No, acrylics. I used a spray acrylic for the base coat and hand painted the other colors. I like enamels because there are so many more color options out there, but they need a LONG time to dry adequately. But, when they do, they look good in my opinion!
-
I realy like using enamels for vehicles, the seem to do realy well on the hard plastic. But you have to be careful with some of the newer hasbro ships as some of the small detail parts they put in there are using that new rubbery plastic that the figures use and for some reason enamels WILL NOT adhere and dry on that material.
as for your a-wing, I think it looks awesome. Do the engine plumes have lights in them? if not I would definately install some LEDs in the engines and in the cockpit!
-
Spud, I'd LOVE to put some LEDs in there to light the fires, but for whatever reason, I can NOT get that concept down. I've ruined several projects trying to incorporate LEDs. I don't know why it's giving me so much grief, because I actually understand electronics and wiring pretty well, but it is just not working out for me.
-
I really like this Pat. Nice colors. On the front page!
-
That's a great A-Wing mate, can't wait to see it with weathering
-
Holy Crap, that looks awesome! I love it because its totally unique color scheme IMO and I love it because I'm an A-Wing and I always love seeing paint variations. NICE!!!

phatty, if you'd like I'd love to work on it for you, if you could pay the shipping both ways and give me a few bucks for whatever LED's and electronics I use. I'd love to work on adding some LED's to it.
-
Great work, Pat! I love the paint choices for it!
-
thats one wicked lookin A-wing pat !
-
That is very cool Phatty, cant wait to see the finished product!
-
Thanks guys!
-
Looking good brohan. Good to know that the a-wing went to something good and not just sitting my my closet collecting dust.
-
True dat Brother!
-
Love the color scheme on that A-Wing. Reds and yellows are very difficult to get a nice, opaque finish from. For that yellow, I'd recommend putting down a basecoat of tan or beige, and then building up a couple of coats of yellow...I find that gives me a much richer coverage, and avoids that streaky, transparent look.
-
Thanks Glorbes! I think I'll do that!
-
Great A-wing. Yellow is horrible to paint with and so is red. Need so many coats to get a smooth finish (as im finding out with my latest gunship!!). Colours contrast well and with weathering it will take it up a notch. Just fantastic!!
-
great job pat, cant wait to see that gunship lambonspit
-
Cool A-wing dude. Love the color scheme. You should make a custom pilot with the same colors. My only suggestion would be to use some masking tape or a straight edge to get your lines looking more straight, but I give everyone on this site props. This has become my new favorite site because all the customs.
I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. On ships and action figures both, do you sand the old paint off before you apply the new paint or do you just wash it up(cuz I seen tutorials and everyone says to wash the stuff with soap and warm water). And what is the best paint to use? The reason I am asking is that I have a custom Jedi of myself and I want to paint my own color scheme on a Jedi Starfighter. Any suggestions would help.

most people say wash the original and then spray it down with a coat of primer for the best results. This will prevent your final paint apps from scratching and chipping as bad... ON my personal collection of customs (stuf that I'm not worried about the quality of) I usually don't do anything to the figure/ship before painting (of course I usually wish I had taken the time to primer it when I finish.).
BTW there is a "resources and references" section for any other help you might need. Look forward to seeing the custom starfighter (I'm working on one myself).
-
Thanks for the kind words! Mike, I just usually take a light grey primer and paint the whole thing, then go over it with another spray color as the base coat. Airbrushing works wonderfully also. I've never washed mine at all, nor have I ever had to sand it. I do NOT recommend using Tamiya Spray Paints, as I find they're too liquid and run. However, I have had some excellent luck with Krylon Fusion for plastics.
-
Thanks fellas. I just wondered about the sanding part. I heard that you have to wash figures especially cuz they have oils on them from the factory? I don't know. I will try painting some stuff that I don't care about 1st before I mess up a $20-$25 Jedi Starfighter, ya know? Inflation is a killa!
-
Sometimes a paint may be too thin, so it may run more. Sometimes, it may need more dry time. I use ModelMasters, Testors, and Tamiya Acrylics and Enamels. The Enamels need at least a week to dry fully, but come in more colors. The Acrylics are easier to mix and dry much faster, in minutes.
-
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT use enamels on your figures. for most vehicles it'll work fine... but they WILL not work right on most modern figures. just fyi
-
See, I disagree. I've used enamels on figures, and although it DOES take a LONG time to adequately dry, I think they look extra sharp, especially on armored forms.
-
Yeah, I think I will experiment on some of those dollar store figures before I mess up any of my beloved Clones. I appreciate the advice fellas.
-

I have done a few with enamels that worked, and if the figure is made of the older harder plastic it does work fine... but the newer figures (like the clone wars clones) which are made of the rubbery plastic, the enamels never dry on them.
I painted a boba figure when I was just starting out that I let sit for litterally a month and half and it never dried. The enamel paint remained tacky and sticky... so I just don't even risk it anymore.
-
Yeah, I tried to paint a figure once when I was a kid and the paint was always sticky and it got dust on it so it all clumped up. Guess that discouraged me. I too have noticed that the Clone Wars figures are a different plastic. Rubbery. I did pick up Cad Bane this weekend. He's such a cool character.
-
Ok, I have primed 2 more vehicles for customizing. A Snowspeeder and Landspeeder. I'm debating if they will be fleet specific, or planet specific. I got me an airbrush finally, so I'll be testing it out on these.
For the Snowspeeder, I'm torn between making it a dark red or a dark green. The red would be fleet specific, while the green would be forrest specific, such as Endor or such.
The Land Speeder, I have no idea yet. I'm debating on personal vehicle for the Overseer of the Imperial Shipyards. I still need to MAKE an Overseer yet, so I just don't know.
-
can't wait to see what you do with these...
me personally would LOVE to see an "forest terain air-speeder"
-
I agree with Spuda, a forest recon speeder would be killer!
-
I agree with Spuda, a forest recon speeder would be killer!
I agree with both!! Would be something out of the ordinary and you could pull it off easily!!
-
I agree also with a forest recon speeder.
-
Then Forrest Recon Speeder it shall become! Thanks for the input!
-
I'm just catchingf up with things....
ooooh forest speeder, I'm very interested to see how this turns out!!!
-
Here is a preliminary shot of my Forest Speeder. I finally bought me an airbrush, and tried it out on this project. I started with a base of a forest green, which cracked over a small section of the ship, but was able to turn that into battle damage. I used some Dark Yellow to accent it a bit, showing some dirt. Then I used some black for some weathering and battle scarring. It's my first attempt at airbrushing, so take that into consideration!

-
Looks good, Pat. Throw some black details in the cracks and drybrush it up and this thing will sparkle. How do you like your airbrush?
-
It's messy! I'm getting used to it still. I like the effects it brings. I'm going to play with it a little more yet, see how well I can do this one up. I still need to do the canopy and guns, add in a few more emplacements, and see what I come up with!
-
Looking good so far. I can see nothing wrong with that battle damage, its looking great!!
-
:o wowwowo
-
Wattoh,
nobody wants to read 3 posts of 100 smilies, They have been removed
-
I'm liking this one Pat..Paintwork's coming on as well...I'm thinkin I'll do one of these at some point.
-
It's looking good Pat, if you have any questions on the airbrush just drop me a line, it's the best tool I have when I customize vehicles, I love them
-
lookin good pat :)
-
Nice job Pat! I like the color scheme and you are already pretty good with that air brush. Now I would weather that bad boy.
-
Yeah, I think I'll add in a touch more of the dark yellow and black accents, and then weather it a bit more. I tried to weather it with the black and the airbrush, but it came off more as effect/camo than weathering. I'm gonna dry brush it once I'm all finished with it though.
-
Pat this camo speeder is amazing. Can't wait till it's finished.
-
That forest speeder is a great idea. Can't wait to see it with some weathering.
great job Pat
-
Here is my Forest Speeder. It's 99.9% finished. I added some silver touches to show paint chipping from wear, and the colors are how I like them. I haven't weathered the canopy or guns as of yet, and the tips of the guns aren't quite finished, but I'm still thinking on that one. In any case, here they are thus far.

that snow speeder is looking awesome Pat!!! great job with the airbrushing, i am liking the look of this bad boy!!!
-
that is pretty cool, Pat! what did you use for the tail gun?
-
Very nice lookihg forest speeder Pat.
-
I think it's the original tail gun, actually!
-
It would have been cool to see these try to take out a walker or atst on Endor!
-
that looks bloody marvelous mate
-
that looks great dude! hard to believe theres anything you could add!
-
Thanks guys! I'm liking how this one turned out. I have to find a place to start to display my custom vehicles!
-
thats great phatty. Battle damage looks really nice, and i love that purple glare on the windscreen (coincidental or not?). Great job!!
-
Actually, it's an amber. I painted it clear amber/orange to make it easier for the pilots to see through the dense forest foliage!
-
The Speeder looks great Pat, Looks like your having fun with the airbrush
-
AWESOME!!!! That forest speeder is spot on my friend...my jaw dropped when I scrolled onto the image!
-
Wow, thanks Jules!
-
i never look at the custom vehicle thread and this got me interested :) :)
-
Dude, you gotta check out ALL of the sections!
-
Phatty, you've been Hangarbay'd

That's killer, Jules!
-
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Jules! That looks awesome!
-
that is great hangerbay!
-
Nice vehicles. I'm really liking that snowspeeder, excuse me, forestspeeder. lol bbfet

Next up on the custom Vehicle front are the following:
Darth Vader's Personal Security AT-ST, stationed at Bast Castle on Vjun...

-
these are cool! i especially like that walker!
-
Red Scout Walker is awesome...I'd have never thought to paint it red! and I've always wanted to get my hands on a speeder...I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
-
Both are going to take a lot of patience on my end: The walker has a lot of space to paint, to add in the weathering and other effects, not to mention the detail. The speeder is going to be all about taking my time and painting smooth, clean lines, neither of which I'm very good at! But I love the base colors thus far, so the rest should be fun!
-
nice really nice, like the at-st cool
-
Thanks! I hope to get some work done on them today!
-
The security AT-ST is a great idea Pat, I like the red colour on it.
great job
-
looks like a great start on 2 sweet vehicles. Can't wait to see more.
-
DANG you beat me to it! I was thinking about painting my at-st up in crimson guard colors to go with my crimson scout trooper.... :P
this just reinforces my thoughts on the matter though... I've been strugling with whether or not to actually customize my new at-st.... thanks alot pat.
-
oooh I like it ;D
-
Awww, Spuda, don't be like that! There's MORE than enough room in the Star Warsverse for 2 Crimson AT-STs! I'm willing to bet that yours and mine are no where near alike, either! In fact, just for grins, I'm willing to NOT divulge any WIP shots against yours, just to see how different, or potentially similar, ours come out!
-
I wasn't going to say anything by I was hoping you'd weather the walker. You should try the Antracite wash I used on the falcon. the wash effect works best on a painted surface...Just a suggestion.
-

naw, I like seeing wip shots. Then I can learn where you mess up ;)
I still havn't decided on whether or not to do my at-st.... it's the only one I got and I was leaning towards not customizing it because until now I hadn't come up with anything good enough to do to it. I am going to try the color scheme on an at-rt first and make a crimson arf trooper driver for it... so we'll see how that one goes before I mess with the large walker.
-
Here are some more WIP shots of my speeder. I still need to find parts to make me a nobleman and woman to pilot said speeder, but that's no big deal.

looks really cool!
-
Can't wait to see her finished up!
-
Phatty....I'll second Sprywalker on this one, looking forward to seing this speeder evolve.
-
Cool speeder Pat!
-
Love the AT-ST... cool idea and a cool way to use the older smaller mold.
I still need to get my son a landspeeder now that he's getting into SW.. what's a SW collection without a Landspeeder, lol... I like the colors on yours, are you going to battle damage it up any, or leave it as is?
-
So, I had another V-Wing Starfighter lying around, and decided that a certain Sith Princess needed her own star fighter in which to blow those pesky Rebel X-Wings and Y-Wings and A-Wings and B-Wings out of the cosmos. So behold, Darth Leia's flagship starfighter, The Violaceous Spur! Her astromech droid, R2-P8, is a highly advanced and modified astromech, capable of calculating a myriad of hyperspace jumps based on ion trails and a constant stream of espionage on Rebel flight patterns, while tracking multiple targets and extreme evasion tactics. R2-P8 also is programmed to relinquish controls at a nanosecond whenever Leia's Force talents command her to perform maneuvers, and take back over in another nanosecond.

I LOVE THAT COLOR SCHEME YOU CHOSE!!!
The gold around the cockpit is outstanding!
The black with the purple highlights, regal yet sinister.
And the highly advanced and modified astromech R2-P8, tracking ion trails, that is genius!
Great job

pat... I love the colors you chose for that V-wing. I'm just not a big fan of the ship itself. If I were customizing one of those I would remove the side wings and add some kind of horizontal wing that would come out at an angle forward. Perhaps even rotate the virticle wing struts around to the sides and make them jut out... I just like the streamlined look of the fighter without the silly "wanna-be tie--pannels" sticking up and down on the side.
I also think that the "princess" would have a highly customized ship that would resemble the original vehicle but at the same time deviate greatly from it's intended look.... similar to the idea of Anakin's modified jedi starfighter that had the huge engines added on.
now... that being said... I LOVE your work on this, what I said above is just the approach I would have taken... so it realy doesn't matter! lol
