Title: Reconsgts' Dios
Post by: Reconsgt on September 20, 2009, 02:52:50 PM
Here are some pics of my Endor Dio I did back in 04 I think. Dio is on a bench outside of my house so the far background is my woods the rest is the dio, I strived for realism so I feel it blends well. In subsequent shots from the top down you can see where the dio ends and my lawn begins ;)

I lost my building of shots when my old HD crapped out. I will see if I can recover more from other sites I posted them on,. One was  pissy I left and deleted my work but I bet a few others have some left up.

Oh yes, I've seen this before, but it is AWESOME! For me, the Endor & Hoth battles are the 2 most exciting movie scenes of all time, you have done a fantastic job re-creating Endor. Great images as well.

Oh and this weekend both my PC and my Network Drive have both Crashed, Kapoot...I am fuming, I'm so close to bouncing the Network Drive around my back yard right now...Darkchild, everything was backed up on it.....PC's / VISTA I HATE YOU!!!!!

I was up in my garage attic today and I found an old tub of dio supplies I had stashed, in it was a few pieces I started but never finished, One being a lava flow I was doing ala EPIII . I got the lava flow painted but never went any further. I may have to finish it but building the rocks and ledge.  Here is a snap of the lava flow

That lava flow looks killer, Wayne. yep, you should crank out an awsome ROTS mustafar dio with that.

You know that I like realistic looks in a figure, vehicle or diorama.
This stream lava fits right in.
Nice work!

Love the ground effects did you use moss or grass form hobby shop
Title: Re: Reconsgts' Dios
Post by: Reconsgt on October 14, 2009, 01:52:12 PM
I actually used both, along with dried moss I left out for a week, I then crunched it up into fine particles and used that as the base ground cover.

The tree branch are from stuff that you cut in the yard

Yep,  on the Endor dio, I cut branches from a tree I cut down, to make sure they didn't rot I clear coated them in varnish.

Now a WIP as asked for

Here is the rough beginings of a battle platform I will be using as the centerpiece of a new Dio, featuring some Mandos.   I have the base coat on and 2 layers of gunk, it still needs alot of the finish detailing of the platform, ie  rust and dirt wear and grim but it's started , then on to all the added bits, This was a complete Joe Bf when I started, all will be modified and used on here with some added pieces and a ground cover and build up. The plywood it is on will be part of the dios base so it will be completely landscaped, one day ;)

Recon, The Hangarbay is most impressed with the Battle Platform, the metal sheet effect and the painting is excellent. Looking forward to seeing more WIP's on that one.

as requested,   I threw it together,  as you can tell many pieces have not been modified yet, but this is the layout of what it will be to some extant,   only the first few coats of paint are on and some have not even been primed yet but it's enough to let you get the general direction it will be going.

Recon, that is looking amazing!

Onl thing I would do different is I'd remove the bg "H" off the landing pad, apart from that the whole thing looks very exciting. Can't wait to see more.

That will definatly be gone as well as anyother stickers left on certain parts,  I am mainly just working on the platform at the moment.

Finished up a small part of the landing platform today and thought I would share a quick pic,  I added some small lights to the perimiter of the platform,  a couple have loose wires it seems but all do light up as they should, I just need to glue the wires in place.

I remember wanting this as a kid real bad... but only ever got about half of it at a yardsale in real bad shape in the late 80's...
Havent seen one in years, and want one just as bad now as I did then.
This is looking great so far.

Wow, those lights kick it up a notch, if that is possible. This is gonna be another one of those killer pieces when done. Man, I keep thinking of the Hasbro Dio contest and think how many things I see here that are so much better than thier top five choices.

TY guys, a few more WIP pics,  it's comming together so soon I will work on the rest of the dio, it will eventually have some fencing around the perimeter of the dio footprint, some more light effects and whatever else pops into mind,  my goal is an FOB or outpost for Clan Skirata for eventually what I hope will be a short story by yours truly.

Wayne, the color/weathering effect on that diamond plate flooring is spot on.  Keep going, buddy. I can't wait to see more.

This was my entry into the New Year Contest,

It is depicting the dust off scene from Order 66, on  Haurgab, after they blew the cliff face and were calling for extraction,

I wanted to put detailing in the interior of the gunship to show a dirty environment

Now that the contest is over I plan on spending more time weathering the gunship

The rock is about 12-14 inches tall and was built from 2x4s drywall tape, and greatstuff, carved down, painted and textured, the pics are not the best but I will add some of the stages of construction at some point

From the contest pics, I hadn't even noticed the weathering on the rcs or inside the gunship, Wayne. I really like the cliff. Yeah, I would love to see a wip pic of this.

I think it would be cool to see this permanently mounted to the cliff, but can understand you wan't to remove it. I wonder what you could get that was clear that would support that ship. I seem to recall RS selling vehicle stands at one time, but this just looks great. I hadn't noticed the inside floor weathering till these pics too.

This dio looks great!  I love the cliff.

I was wondering the same thing.

You could get some clear PVC rods, and drill a few holes into the bottom of the gunship, make the rods long enough and spaced out enough so that the ship will hold with gravity, but you can remove it also.
I think I'm going to try a similar clear stand with a custom I'm working on.

It can be done, I ran out of time, there are a few ways I was looking at it,  1 was since the base and supposrts are wood and very sturdy, I was going to cut clear plexiglass brackets to come out of the back of the hill and support the gunship,  I may do that, but I doubt I will be keeping this as a display piece due to it's size, It will most likely end up in the attic

Any dio with a vehicle really draws my attention and this dio is amazing!!
Firstly, the base is fantastic. Texture, size and materials used are just perfect!!
Secondly, coming from a vehicle customiser, that gunship is just superb. The colour scheme and subtle weathering go perfectly together. Particularly love the floor of the gunship and the battle weathered turrets.

Great job and congrats on winning. Hopefully i can get a win under my belt in the next contest lol!!

Sad to hear this could end up in the attic, but I know about having too much stuff for the size of the space. Story of my collecting life.  This could make for any type of cool Desert Scene from the CW Ryloth episodes ( I coud see that new atrt on top of this aiming down at some Droids or any Tatooine Scene (Anakin looking down on the Tusken village).
