Title: AFE's Custom Vehicles--Updated 08/06/12--Sandalorian Chicken Walker! New!
Post by: ActionFigEmpire on February 01, 2012, 10:09:10 PM
The Sandalorians are a tribe of Mandalorian/Tusken Raider/Sandtroopers who live in the harsh deserts of Tatooine. To find out more about them go here: http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=6619.660

So as mentioned before the Sandalorians steal all that they can and that includes vehicles like old derelict Barc Speeder Bikes, antiques from the clone wars, Imperial vehicles, and anything they can find or take from the Jawas and repair. One of the most common vehicles they utilize is a Sandalorian Swoop bike fashioned from an old Barc Speeder and outfitted with all sorts of weapons and defenses. This particular Sando Swoop is nicknamed the "Sand Bastard" for it's incredibly tough reinforced armor and its ability to take most any damage and be rebuilt better and meaner than before.

The Sand Bastard comes armed with all 4 standard Barc speeder laser cannons, a rear mounted heavy repeating bunker buster turret that is fired by a gunner or remotely by the pilot using a neural link slave circuit. Mounted in the swoop's front grill is an EMP fork used for ramming and disabling enemy vehicles. There is a hidden hold-out blaster pistol in a holster by the swoop's controls so that the pilot is never unarmed, and he sits behind an armored windscreen crafted from an old droideka head plate. The hull has been retrofitted with tons of razor sharp durasteel spikes to ward off would be attackers and to utilize when ramming. The chassis is full of blast damage, laser burns, and scorch marks. Behind the pilot's seat there are pouches for supplies and rations and tools and 2 handles for the gunner to hold onto when not gunning or for long distance travel. The Sand Bastard is not to be trifled with and it packs a heck of a punch. There's also a bleached Cerean (Ki-Adi Mundi's people) skull on the front of the swoop. Sandos use the skulls of their enemies for decoration and to ward off evil. They're also known for mounting the severed heads of their foes on durasteel spikes. They also affix strips of Bantha hide and Tusken bandages to the hulls of their vehicles for added camouflage and ornamentation.

I also have a Sandalorian Tank and stolen Tatooine mining Speeder Truck in the works so stick around for those!

Sam, I have been waiting for you to post since you told me you were working on a few vehicles, man was it worth the wait! The perfect blend of Road Warrior x Star Wars, I mean perfect! That swoop is so bad ass man! You have really gone all out on this one! All the bits you added like the pouches, weapons control/arm gauntlet, chains, spikes, Droideka wind screen, man this list could go on for ever! For me this is your finest work to date. Great parts bashing, great pait work and awesome weathering with all the blaster marks and burns. Most impressive, my friend.

@Spry: I am honored by your words. As one of the resident master vehicle builders and got-to-guy for all things customs this means a lot. I dunno if it's perfect, but I did paint the undercarriage lol. I'm so thrilled you like it! The tank and mining truck are in the exact same vein, lots of spikes, new weapons, and nasty little surprises for the enemy. For the battle damage I used a nail I heated with a lighter and a soldering iron. Followed a really good tutorial about making blast craters and then played around on this vehicle testing things out. Hope you like the other vehicles when they're done :)

My hats off to you, sir. On the front page.

Is that skull from an Indy 4 figure?

@Clonehead: Thanks brother! Glad you like the theme and the additions :) It's my first ever custom vehicle so i really tried to push the envelope on an otherwise somewhat plain vehicle (the Barc Speeder). I'm honored to have the front page! Thank you again!!

@CS78: Good eye! Guess that's why they call you the sniper ;) No it's not Ki's skull but it is a Cerean skull, Ki's race. Honestly It's an Indie Crystal Skull that I had sitting around and it looked perfect for a Cerean skull!

@Smeagol92055: Thanks mate! Glad you like it! Yep, good eye! It's a Crystal Skull from IJ4. Would also work as a Cone Head skull too haha.

Well now I'm wondering if the aliens from Indy 4 were really Cereans that somehow ascended to a higher plane of existence... one with the Force, one might even conjecture.

AFE, WOW! your latest creation is jist...marvellous! The styling gives it an appeal outside of the Star Wars genre, plus the sheer creative skill that has gone into it would make it the envy of most model makers full stop!
It is most certainly the most original Swoop design I've ever seen and a wonderful addition to the forum.

Having seen yours and the other yarder's masterful work on their vehicles I knew how high the bar was set and so I had that much of a task in front of me. 2 more vehicles are rolling out soon with the same themes and colors as this one. Thank you again!!

Thanks Spuda! I've always wanted a Swoop/Speeder Bike of some kind. I wish Hasbro would take its cues from customizers. There are so many things on the yards I'd snatch up. Like Janga Fett! I am planning on making a second swoop in this style, not exact, but the same colors, lots of spikes, chains, weapons. Planning on selling it too.

Big vehicle, long post. Pic heavy, thanks for bearing with me!

At long last I have finished my Sandalorian tank build! Just like with their swoops and other vehicles the Sandos steal, salvage, or bash together vehicles from existing parts they find or take on Tatooine. In their arsenal are many stolen Republic and Imperial vehicles such as this repurposed and retrofitted Republic TX-130 Fighter Tank. With added weaponry and armor the Sandalorian Juggernaut Tank is bristling with deadliness--literally! Covered in razor sharp durasteel spikes this tank packs nearly as much firepower as an AT-AT walker.

The Sando Juggernaut comes fully equipped sporting 2 heavily armored frontal ramming tusks with razor wire stretched between them for catching enemies on foot, the razor wire can also be electrified for an extra jolt of pain. Make it beyond the razor wire and you enter the "maw of death" all 3 sides of the "U" shaped opening in the front of the tank has been filled with durasteel spikes and at the very end, are 2 EMP launchers to disable enemy vehicles, shields, or droids. Above the maw are twin double barreled Taim and Bak decimation class cannons (85% of the forepower of the AT-AT heavy cannons) which were intended for delivery to a munitions factory for use on a Moff's personal attack shuttle. The  two modified "ear" cannons on either side of the cockpit and gunner's hatch are Merr-Sonn medium repeating anti-personnel pulse projectors both with built-in self contained munitions drum feeds each with a 2000 rounds capacity. atop the gunner's hatch is a swiveling light chain cannon with friend/foe droid brain targeting system and manual control which can be fired by the pilot, co-pilot, or main gunner remotely. Directly behind the right ear cannon there is a mounted heavy repeating blaster cannon with self contained ammo box and cooling system. This can be detached and carried off the tank into the battle as a heavy support weapon. There are two anchoring ropes one on either side of the tank that can be used to allow a brave Sando warrior to ride the "hood" of the tank into battle showing their fearlessness, or to tie a prisoner to the front of the tank and ride them into battle to take enemy fire like a shield. There are also spare oxygen filter tanks, Sando rags and bandages, decorative skulls, and enemies' heads on durasteel spikes decorating the hull of the tank. As well as some supply packs, ammo bags, and rations pockets affixed as well.

you know it's funny I kept having to stop myself from adding more spikes, because 1) I wanted the sandos to be able to ride/stand/sit somewhere on it, and 2) because it's possible to over do spikes and severed heads haha. So glad you like it!!!

Holy cow! Sam that is stunnig and so bad ass at the same time! Your skills are growing by leaps and bounds! I think you stopped at just the right point, not too much but heavily armored with spikes. I love everything about it! Helmet's off to you man! It looks quite vcool in front of that backdrop of blue!

We call this the "Death Tank". Dude, this is extremely awesome! There are so many details to enjoy. I like that chain gun mount. That is just one of the things that caught my eye.

It also reminds me of something the Reaper Bad Guys might have from the Movie and TV Series called Firefly.

I am usually not into this much gore, but those little details like the spiked heads and spiked arm just really fit with this and kick it up a few notches. I wonder how long it took to put all those spikes on this?

@Spry: Thank you thank you! I'm thrilled you like it! I always try to push myself a bit further with each piece i do. Yeah you can definitely over do a theme or a look sometimes. I totally tapped into my WH40K days for this one. The look I was going for was a bit like the Chaos Marines' in the way they trick out their vehicles. Hehe well all the credit for the backdrop goes to you of course! I love using that to offset things :)

@Clonehead: Haha pretty much what I was going for. But how much death is too much? When does it stop being a tank and is just a rolling lump of fodder and greeblies? I really tried to get in as many detail shots as I could without losing the over all form of the tank so as not to confuse the viewer. The chain gun is a clone weapon mounted on a droid leg joint attached to the original TX-130 top cannon mount so the peg fits perfectly. Glad you like it!

@Tamer: Yes! The Reapers! I remember seeing FF for the first time and actually really dreading this "unknown threat" at the edge of the galaxy. I think the Sandos and Reapers would get along together pretty well. They could trade tips on putting spikes on stuff. The gore just seemed totally logical and fit in with the Sandos. If they don't skin your head and use your skull they probably cut off your head and pop it onto a spike to ward off their enemies. The arm was a last minute touch I came up with while thinking of the pit of spikes in the comic Boba Fett: Twin Engines of Destruction (featuring Jodo Kast). There are also several blaster holes and burns among the spikes as if some wounded enemy found himself in there and deftly kept shooting his blaster rifle though it had no effect. The spikes took his arm and the rest of him was sucked under the repulsors and ground into the sand. It took me a while to put all the spikes on it that's for sure. But I have it down to a science at this point. They actually glue pretty well once you know the trick.

@CS78: Thanks brother! RW and SW are 2 of my favorite trilogies! Yes! Perhaps the Empire contracts them eventually to hunt down the death troopers? Or maybe Mos Eisley is over run by rebel zombies and they must destroy them. I don't think zombies would hold up against these guys very well. Would be a lot of gore for sure!

Thanks Botwt! Glad I could do right by you :) Ah that's cool! Yes I thought of the "men from the west" and their olyphants with this. They too have tons of spikes and razorwires. Awesome!

WOW!!!  Wicked!  CloneSniper78 hit it when he said Road Warrior meets Star Wars.  But I'm also thinking about the Mumakil Rider from Lord of the Rings.  You know, those giant elephant-things.  Great work!

ya know... I usually see customs and think, dang, that's a really cool idea but I bet it could be done better with this change, or do this slightly different...  that's just my mind's way of coming up with new ideas for my own customs...

but every now and then a set of truly awesome customs comes down these forums and my thought process changes to:

DAMN....  that's awesome!  Why didn't I think of that?  I don't think it can get any better than that!

yeah.  good job man.  Your sandos are a great concept, I love it.  The speeder bike was astonishing on it's own, now add this beheamoth of a tank in the mix and I'm blown away.

Great job.  I know I couldn't find anything bad to say... but I can't even come up with any constructive criticism! :P

Well Spuda, color me flattered! Forgive me if I'm a little bit skeptical though, there must be something that needs improving haha. There always is. This piece was a blast to work on and at the same time extremely tedious. I have no room on my shelves for it, so I'm not sure what to do with it. Might end up selling it.

As for a huge group shot, I am planning to do one in the sand at some point, but I have 1 more Sando vehicle to finish before I do that. So eventually it will be finished. I am also making some new Sandos for JediMindTrix on commission. So I want to include them in the shots too!

@Wardog: Gonna make my head swell! I love both series as well! I'm a huge fan of primitive, savage, post apocalyptic desert dwellers. So it seemed only natural to do some for the Star Wars Universe. I'm truly flattered you like them so much! Thank you!!! And welcome to the yards (or welcome back if you've been away or something). For more of the riders and pilots check my custom figure thread for the Sandalorians.

Title: Re: AFE's Custom Vehicles--Updated 01/02/12--Sandalorian Swoop! New!
Post by: Joerhyno on July 31, 2012, 08:48:50 PM
WOW... you've been busy while I was on my hiatus, lol... I just had to quote this, so everyone could drool at it on a whole new page. Love the details man, anymore updates to your Sandalorians? Any new vehicles in the works?

Thanks Joe! I'm on an extended hiatus myself. I have some ideas for more Sandos. A squad of heavy weapons troopers and possibly a Sando AT-ST. As for vehicles... I have about 10 WIPs and about 25 WIP figures. No idea how I'm digging myself outta this one lol. I need to order more paints and I'm selling 99% of my entire Star Wars figure collection. And now, back into the shadows!

I'm still on hiatus, but have decided to focus nearly all of my future custom energy on Sandalorians. So today I decided to take a small step toward that and put together a vehicle I have been wanting to do for a long time now. A new Sando desert vehicle that combines a salvaged skiff and a stolen Imperial AT-ST. I have nicknamed this Ugly vehicle the "Skiff Chicken". Officially it's a Sandalorian Buzzard. The AT-ST head separates from the skiff and the skiff separates from the AT-ST Legs. Thus the vehicle has three separate modes. Flying skiff with armored cockpit, skiff with walker legs and skiff walker with armored cockpit. The build was simple enough after I worked out the engineering and the balance issues. Here's the unpainted WIP.

Behold! The Sandalorian Buzzard!

@Lostcauze501st: Thanks dude! Soon!

@MandoAssassin: I hoped you would! I am planning a Heavy Sando squad for this vehicle. Very "Steel Battalion" Meets "Band of Brothers". Got some names picked out for the new heavy armor/weapons Sandos, Gut-Buster, Chest-Burster, Gate-Crasher, Slag+Frag (brothers), Dirt, and Decay.

@Ghostskull: Thanks brother! Hope to have it done soon!

@YakFace: Been talking about it for long enough, figured I might as well do it :D

@Clone10: Thank you sir! I hope to finish it soon!

@Spry: It all started one night when I was thinking of things Sandos would build for vehicles. Then it hit me, they'd take a skiff and give it legs. Because why? Because they're Sandos and why not?! Then I decided to add the cockpit to really give it that "Ugly" feel. I just hope I don't run out of tooth picks!

Awesome idea. I like the fact that is can still be taken back apart and serve in their regular modes. It is like a real SW Transformer. Back on the front page.

Thanks so much Tamer! If only I had a spare walker peg for the AT-ST. I've been working on the walker head every day now and am really liking how this idea is coming together!
