Title: krash_override customs.
Post by: krash_override on July 04, 2013, 09:47:37 PM
Hey,
New to The Yards, figured I'd throw these up for some constructive criticism.  Been customizing for a little under a year now and have a couple figs under my belt.  Here is the first custom I ever did, Fonzie the Monkey.

Welcome to the yards krash override or should I call you zero cool? Great looking customs, where'd you get that guitar from? Is it 1/18th scale?

Either is fine Haha!  I carried over my Instagram name, Cereal Killer was already taken LOL.

I ripped the guitar off of a cheap Elvis Presley ornament I found at a flea market.  Made a cast, and there it was.  The tuning knobs didn't mold too well, but it works none-the-less.  It fits a 3 3/4 inch figure well, so 1:18th to 1:16 is about the right scale.

Same here, I remember seeing it in the theater!  I've been making a mental note of how I can custom the main characters as well...I've got a Lady Jay that is perfect for Acid Burn, and the Burn Out from that Big Bad Toystore Dreadnok 7 pack would be perfect for Lord Nikon.  I have a head that may work for Crash and Cereal with a little sculpting on my part...I so many irons in the fire haha.

I dont like limiting myself to one kind of custom, and am always looking for ways to progress the artform.  I saw this a while back done by someone else and wanted to have a go at it.
Totally butchered the nozzle while fitting it, but learned a lot.  Next attempt shall be better....

Interesting stuff. Welcome aboard! I thought the guitar turned out alright.
Try adding some thin paper flash around the thin bits of the master part to promote resin flow and air bubble egress and trim around the thin bits of the resulting cast part.

Still have a little ways to go on Aya here, but figured I would post how far she's came.

Here's how she started.  The base used was a Marvel Universe Mystique.  I ditched the stock head in favor of cast Asajj Ventress

Ever since I heard the story of Krampus I knew I had to make a figure of him.  It took me a while to find out how to approach it, but after finding a head everything kinda fell into place.  He has been lying half completed on my chopping block for a month or so, and with Aya almost done I think its time to pick him back up and make some progress.

Here is what I started with:
The base that will be used is a Blanx body, a geonosian zombie for the legs, and a random demon head cast that was found online.

Krampus has more of a "goat like" leg that I wanted to mimic, which was one thing that kept me from just jumping right into the build.  After inspecting the geonosians I realized that I may be able to hack it up and make use of the lower legs.  Shaved it down to fit into the upper thigh and glued it into place.  Later some Magic Sculpt was added to assure a solid bond.

The "victim".  I can't help but feel slightly responsible...

First hurdle finished.

Sculpting fur...

...more fur
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5492/9303126931_915cbe096e.jpg)

...aaaaaaaaannnnnd, more fur.
Here is how he sits.  Next step is to sand down to minimize joint rub.

Just finished up Aya.
Defiantly went out of my comfort zone a bit by sculpting the armor, but I learned a lot and the person that commissioned her is pleased so all is good.

A little Photoshop magic to show a full 360
She doesn't have scoliosis -- I just got a little lazy and didn't take the time to pose her with perfect posture -- ;D

Tamer had it right, Krampus is a Christmas Character that runs around with Santa and Punishes bad children. He basically looks like a mix between a sasquatch and a demon.

I found this base figure at a swap meet for under a $1, had an extra goat head laying around so I decide to throw him together.

Side view, This was the first time i attempted to make custom weapons.

Full paint app on the head, resculpt on the horns because they cast with a couple flaws.

Custom bow, arrows, and quiver.
The bow was made from aluminum wire, then wrapped in floral tape to give it a little grip/texture.
Arrows are as simple as duct-tape wrapped over a toothpick then trimmed
Quiver was done with a straw, a piece of leather strap, some glue/epoxy to hold everything together and a little paint to finish it off.

The CZ-4 droid has got to be one of my favorite Star Wars head sculpts.
I found it only logical to cast the head and make a minifigure of him.

Recipe for the little guy is pretty simple:
Cast of a 3 3/4-inch head slapped onto a Marvel Mega-Bloks figure.
Using the Mega-Bloks gave him a pretty good range of motion for his size, and there is little to no paint rub.

Detail.
In total, this little guy stands about 2 inches tall.

It should come as no surprise by now that I am fond of the weird and obscure side of toys.
So, this figure will probably not catch you too off guard  ;).
Meet "Sparkles the Unicorn"!

Sparkles enjoys cupcakes, sugarplums, and all things magical.
He is an optimist, who has a soft side for anything cute and fuzzy.
Sparkles will also be playing a huge part in my photo a day project over on Instagram.

OK, enough backstory LOL
Here is the recipe for Sparkles:
~Base Body was a Marvel Universe Iron Fist.
~Head is from a cast of a Schleich horse.
~Once cast, I added a little Magic Sculpt horn on him.
~Other than the rainbow at the end of the legs/arms (and head) I didn't touch the figures original color.
~Clear glitter nailpollish was used to help him live up to the name of Sparkles

Been a little busy with school lattely, but was able to knock a few customs out this weekend!

This guy was a happy mistake.  He did not take to a Rit dye bath too well, but it gave him a neat tone, so I decided to throw a skull on him and there it was!
Actually pretty happy with the way he came out.

I was commissioned to do two pandas, one normal.....

...and one Magical Death Panda.
Yes, he has a unicorn....and a massive amount of blood.
Cute and Deadly.
Is there any better combination?
I think not.

And last but not least was a commissioned head sculpt for a 6in Black Sand Trooper.
The base head was a Marvel Legends Dr. Strange.
I cast the head, gave him a hair cut, and a couple other small tweaks.

This may be a Imperial Shipyards first....a custom Richard Nixon!

The moment I saw this Punisher head, I thought it resembled the famous ex-president.
I believe throwing it on this Batman Harvey Dent body proves my point valid.  ;) ;D

Suprisingly, this is only my second monkey custom ;D

The base was an Indiana Jones "Mutt Williams" figure.
The head was cast from a Schleich Chimp.

Yet another animal custom in the books.
Really happy with the way this one came out,
it was the first time I attempted to paint a graphic on a shirt.

Finishing up two new animal customs this weekend!

First...there's a new scoundrel in town.
What do you do when you run across a cheap Quinlan Vos figure at a flea market?
Throw a hyena head on it of course!

He looks more like a smuggling scoundrel to me, so he lost the saber and gained a blaster.

This next one is fowl...

Why a Jedi Chicken?  Why not?!  If you ask me, its been farrrr to long haha  ;)

Both the Hyena head and the Chicken head were cast from a Schleich figurine.  The bodies have little, if any modification done to them.

Until next time...may the force be with you  ;D

Quick Lego GNK Power Droid build
I try not to limit myself to 3 3/4 scale, and had an idea the other day while looking at my keyboard.
Figured I would share it with you...not that hard of a build.
Two days tops (and that's with letting the epoxy dry)
Sorry for the bad cell phone photos, pictures were as effortless as this build  ;D

All you really need as a base is a pair of small legs (Lego, Megablocks, etc) and two keys from a key board.

The keys have a post that needs to be sanded down.
Once sanded cut a slit for the legs on one of the halves.
The slit does not need to be perfect, it can be covered up with epoxy later.
Next glue the two halves together.
...and glue the legs in place.

Here he is after some epoxy
Started laying out some random plastic and computer pieces to give him
some pop
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5487/12229262093_6f2b4b40bf.jpg)

Paint
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3676/12229083045_32f7cb3ccc.jpg)

Had a helper glue on some embellishments
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3713/12229659806_6819380afb.jpg)

The final product!

It's been FAR too long since I've been able to customize!
Life has been hectic this year, but after a big move and a new job I finally slowed down enough to bash some figures out.
I apologize for the sheer volume of images I'm about to throw down...trying to make up for lost time i guess  ;)

Anywho, hope to frequent the forums more regularly now that live has slowed to a dull roar.

First figures were  just a couple mini figures to warm up the pallet.

I ended up making a couple abnormal Hobbits to add to the madness which is my custom figure shelf.

So This was another inspiration that came from all those TRU sales.

Gollum's body (from The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins/Gollum two pack) made the perfect base for an "Area-51" type alien.
I'm really digging the way he came out, may have to make him some friends eventually.

Lastly...
With all the animals I use, I tend to have a lot of headless bodies laying around.
Every now and then I will have a moment of inspiration and fit one with a new ball joint and head.

Well, I've wanted to do these guys for quite some time and now, thanks to The Angel Forge, I was finally able to make them happen!
The recepie is very simple:
Men in Black Bodies (Agent Kay and Agent Jay)
and Headscupts purchased from The Angel Forge (online)

Out of the two headsculpts, I really think this one is the best.
Nice detail, and fairly easy to paint. Excited to finally have Jules and Vincent on my Completed shelf.

Another headsculpt from The Angel Forge.

A little detail of Neo's headsculpt
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5596/14952621995_0261d4d256.jpg)

The Body is a mix and match of things I had laying around in the fodder bin.
Coat is from a Nick Fury from the Avengers Movie.
Top is a Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes
Bottom is from a different Sanke Eyes(?)  not exactly sure....

On our last episode of CAFN, Jetpack Blues really talked about your work and said we needed to get on.

If you are game I would love to set up a date for your interview. Did you hear his comments about your work? I thought his take was spot on.

Yeah, I listened to the episode yesterday...it was neat to hear the kind words from Tim and Chad (two customizers that have inspired me from day one) .
I'd be happy to come on the show!  Chad has my contact info, or I can IM you my info...whichever is easier.

I was contacted by a friend on IG who saw Neca's "Spy" from the Team Fortress Two video game line.
She asked if I could possibly make a "Dapper Dear" out of the Body. I wasn't really sure how it was going to come out,
buy half way thorught the process he began to grow on me.  Now that the Dapper Deer is finished, I must admit that I am a little sad to see him go.

As with most of my animal customs the head was made by Schleich
This one was taken straight from the original deer...no cast.
I did end up sculpting the neck down a little more to have it transition into the body nicely,
and take away any strong cut marks that I made while cutting the head off the original body.
My wife was nice enough to knit a small scarf to add the finishing touch.

My latest project has been testing my sculpting skills.
After three failed attempts I was able to get a Lego Jack Skelington to sumwhat resemble the character.
Here he is pre-cast, I'm hoping the clay will hold the detail.
If he survives the casting he will probably need some fine tuning. I'm thinking it will be a lot easier to do with the more solid Resin than the softer clay.
fingers crossed........

Thanks Tamer!  I was able to pull the mold, casts have been a little sporadic but I'm getting stuff to use!  I'll have to post pics this weekend when work slows down

The Final touches on Lego Jack Skelington was his Bat Bow-Tie.
I ended up casting the bow-tie on the same piece of plastic that I had sculpted it on.
Not the best detail but the thing is so small that it doesn't really need a whole lot.
All and all, I think it came out good enough for the scale.

Here is a final shot of the cast/painted head.
Not hyper-realistic, but I think it works for lego. (minus those horrid micro-bubbles in this particular cast  >:( )
It was a fun learning experience...preparing me for greater things to come.

I've wanted to do a Bio-Mechanical custom for a while now.
I had started this guy close to a year ago, but he lost direction and had to take a seat on the sidelines.
Looking at him last week I was re-inspired to jump back in. This is the finished product.

Initially starting this figure, the head was something I was unsure about.
After repainting this GI Joe Kwinn, and throwing a set of "Pod-Racing" Goggles on him, he began to take form.

For the legs, I grafted on some standard fuses that I found while walking around a hardware store.
This is what originally set me off on making the figure.
A couple spare computer parts and wire (compliments of the great Lucasclones) made for some nice embellishments.

After finishing the legs is where I ran into a creative roadblock and had to sit on him for a while.
The bare chest body with vest is what snowballed the inspiration to finishing.

Another detail of the mechanics of his legs.
I had originally fabricated wings for him out of old type-writer arms but that design hit the cutting-room floor.
The wings seemed to over-complicate him, and I wanted to keep the design minimal.

For scale, here he is in contrast to a 3-3/4" and 6" Trooper.
I knew he was going to be taller, but was still a bit surprised at his scale after the fuses were added.
Despite his vertical growth, he still stands fairly easily and maintains an acceptable amount of pose-ability.

The only thing that could make the design of the legs better is if they still looked that cool but had some kind of added play feature. I like the stilts idea just fine but if they lit up or had some spring action, heck even extended out further, that would kick it up a few notches.

Yeah, now that you mention it...some LED's shining up in there would have been a great addition! There's always next time I guess. Thanks for the feedback!

A little holiday project I've been working on the past few days inspired by a Christmas ornimat that I saw online.
Thanks to the holiday weekend I get four days to work on what will become "Santar"

I feel like I hoard headless animals of customs past, but every now and again I will find a use for them haha.
Torso from an wrestling action figure, and a cast of a balljoint (because I HATE workig with the small double balljoint heads)
The head I ended up using is a variant of a GI Joe Shipwreck
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7574/15706277969_757b32edeb_o.jpg)

Sand the hell out of them and stick, glue, then sculpt it in.

Just some more detail on this Santaur that I have been working on.
I was a little concerned at how Shipwreck would transition into a Santa head, but after the beard/stache everything started to take form.

With the hat just about done,  I'm still trying to figure out how to transition the body and horse.
One thing's for sure is that I think I will need to sand some detail into the sculpted hair of the horse to help it transition a little smoother.

Santaur, the final product.
Added a leather belt to help the human/horse transition.
The belt buckle is a simple link to a charm bracelet (note to self, buy my wife a new charm bracelet)
Head was made from a GI Joe Shipwreck headcast and bears a striking resemblance to Chad LucasClones  ;) ;D
