Ok folks these were the ideas that folks had generated here:
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=6761.msg175241#msg175241
that I promised I would put up for our next custom challenge, I will leave this up at least a week or so to get a good sampling spread the word and feel free to encourage others to vote for your favorite choice! And don't forget to add to that thread as I will use them to come up with the poll after our current challenge is over.
-
so r all the winners chosen by random drawings or member votes?
-
so r all the winners chosen by random drawings or member votes?
Are you talking about the poll choices or the challenge winner?
If you are talking about the polls we run, those choices come from the suggestions posed by the members at the link I just posted.
If you mean the challenge itself once we start it that depends. Sometimes we will go with a member vote after all the entries are in. Sometimes we do a random drawing of one or a few of the names out of a hat, or in my case, an TESB Coffee Mug.
-
I voted for articulation, if it means anything I would like to change it to bounty hunters. Or maybe we could have a runoff vote between the top two.
-

You can change your vote if you want.
-
I voted Bounty Hunters. Between the two leading categories that's the one. I can't see remaking someone else's work.
I'm assuming that the Marvel customs was my suggestion but I didn't vote that way. I was suggesting more of a broad range type of thing because I knew Marvel alone wouldn't get the votes. More of a Golden age type contest where all EU pryer to the Dark Horse take over was fair game. That would have included TV specials and Del Ray novels like "Splinter Of The Minds Eye" and "Han Solo At Stars End" and so on. Oh well maybe next time.
-
Today is the last day to vote. If you have a favorite make sure you encourage your friends to vote. It is looking like Bounty Hunters for now!
-
So should I start making my bounty hunter?
-
So should I start making my bounty hunter?
Yepper, looks like Bounty Hunters won. I will try to get a graphic organized and some basic rules put together and announce this no later than tomorrow!
-
Oops
-
I got this idea from Bronxstalker's work.
A custom challenge that limits the artists to use trash to make their creation. Contestants must make a vehicle or a mech suit using ONLY re-purposed junk for detailing. No parts casted by a toy company allowed (except maybe for articulation). Additional sculpt work for fine detail is sanctioned, but can't be the majority of the custom.
What do you guys think about that?
-
We ran a custom contest like that a few years back based on Spry's circuit box lid. It was called the trash to treasure contest. It was pretty fun, maybe its time to run it again. What if we started everyone with the same basic components and see what they come up with? That might be fun too, but after I pay for the shipping of all the prizes for the latest contest I am gonna be fresh out of disposable cash to start this, maybe down the road.
That being said folks, I plan on using the next two weeks to highlight everyone's custom entry for this past contest and then we will see about a new challenge.
-
trash to treasure would be cool.
My thought is a custom non-sentient creature. Like a dewback, taun taun, bantha, that sort either in star wars canon or expanded universe.
-
I still say 6" SW custom contest.
-
I still say 6" SW custom contest.
leaning that way myself Tom. I will get a poll ready as soon as we finish this one off. I am glad folks are clamoring for a new one even if my wallet isn't!
-
I agree
6 inch all the way
-
New poll is up folks!
-
I voted 6 inch.
-
I voted 6" it's the only size for me now and I was refering to figures you perverted bunch of sickos ;D
Ron
-
My vote is in.
-
I'm one of those undecided voters. Lol. What exactly is a small vehicle? Speederbike landspeeder starfighter. One or two man vehicles.
-
Small vehicle would be one man vehicles. Speeders, etc.
-
I was refering to figures you perverted bunch of sickos ;D
Ron
Who are you calling, "scruffy looking"?
-
Hmm, 6" is a bit out of my price range considering I normally pay a max of $3 per figure I use. Maybe I can make an exception, and get something cheaper.. Who Knows, maybe it will get me into 6" figures too.
-
Ok, looks like Star Wars 6 inch it is. I will get things worded and we will get this started!
-
Alright folks, its time to gear up ideas for our next custom challenge. Post em here and we can vote on em in a few days!
-
I'm thinking non-sentient creature, or maybe more broad like Expanded Universe in general, since Hasbro can't make them anymore.
-
Ok, I will add that to the poll. Come on folks lets get some ideas generated here. I am just itching to start this so I can showcase the prizes. They are all going to be donated by TS Hobbies and just look fantastic!
What do folks think about some sort of display base for a figure, vehicle, one to one scale collectible, etc?
-
I have a few ideas to bounce off you can tweek them if need be. First you know I have to advocate a custom vehicle so I think a scratch built ship contest would be cool seeing how this is the "Ship yards". I think a completely original design any scale but at least 5" at its longest point.
Or an original figure based on yourself as a star wars character. Pretty self explanatory any era any affiliation whatever you would see yourself.
Or a custom droid. An original 3.75" or 6" droid design with any purpose you desire.
-
Display base for a figure sounds interesting, and I agree with JDeck the site is called the ship yards, a scratch build vehicle would be pretty cool. Reading older posts about it's earlier proposal, I'm not sure I agree with no toy produced parts, just not repurposed vehicle parts, that would be too simple. Taking from like toy computer console to make a control console seems well repurposed enough.
-

Ooooeee... this is an idea I like!
-
Cool deal and good ideas. I will keep this going till Sunday and then we can start the poll.
-
I would like something where even I could submit some of my wood figures...
-
I would like something where even I could submit some of my wood figures...
Pop an idea on in here and we could vote for it. I would love to see a wide open contest too.
-
How bout create a Star Wars Avengers Squad in honor of the new Avengers?
-
I wont be participating in this myself, but to see new ship/vehicle designs would be cool..even if using parts from others..but drastically changed..not just repainted or extra guns etc..It would have to be major..like a Jedi starfighter with Tie interceptor wings or something..that has a story behind it,or would 'make sense' in the SW Universe evolution of design theories
-
I would like something where even I could submit some of my wood figures...
In a custom ship contest you could build a wooden ship and perhaps a figure pilot.
I think a scratch built ship would be a complete scratch build like plastic, metal, fiberglass, wood etc. or a kit bash using at least two different ships to make a new design. But keep in mind the time restraint.
-
Ok folks I think we have enough to vote on now, but I will leave this up until tonight and then we will start the voting tomorrow!
-
Let's try to not limit ourselves on materials so much. I do like the ship idea.
The custom droid idea is cool
You could widen that one out to include android customs. That could be pretty fun
-
Ok, I will try to get these ideas into a poll we can vote on starting today!
-

I think any type of droid would be acceptable. Working class droids, pilot droids, bounty hunter droids, service droids, battle droids whatever. You could even build a droid that does your job. However a cyborg would not be considered a droid. It just needs to be original design, no repaint or anything like that.
As far as the scale it should be up to the discretion of the builder. A small droid would be better in 6" scale and a larger one would be fine in 3.75" scale. The voting/judging should be based on creativity and originality.
-
Ok folks, I finally sorted through these and started a poll. I added a few other ideas, but feel free to post away on the social sites you frequent so we can actually get a vote that is indicative of the creative soles we have here.
I always go back and forth about the voting thing with the idea of having low votes determine things, but at least those folks care enough to vote. With thousands of members here I would love to at least see a hundred or a hundred and fifty votes.
Feel free to poll your favorite idea and get folks to vote for it in the various social places you frequent. I have tried to keep the themes as vague as possible. Whatever idea wins then that person and I will flesh it out (if need be) to answer any construction questions that might arise.
-
We could do a "non-traditional media" contest that could include wood working and other sculpting or any kind of materials OTHER than the typical plastic figures. Or, make it a requirement that non-traditional materials have to be added to the figures to make it interesting.
-
A lot of good options this time, a hard choice, but means it should yield a a great challenge no matter the winner.
-
Devin, that is an interesting idea and I will be glad to include it in our next poll, but generally speaking the more specific we get with a custom challenge the less interest that generally receives. Maybe you can drum up some support for this so when the next poll arrives folks will vote the heck out of it!
-
Lots of choices. My vote is in and I went in a different direction than I thought I would
-
VOTE_OR_DIE! Not really but Seriously people vote for the custom challenge you would like the customizers here at the shipyards to build. I wish I could vote two or three times there are some really cool themes here.
-
Cast my vote.
I've been wanting to try a vehicle.
Can that be made with parts of other vehicles, original from random trash, or are we talking about a complete scratch build? (Assuming vehicles wins of course).
-
Cast my vote.

I would say any kind of scratch build including a kitbash (merging 2 or more vehicles to make one new vehicle) of any scale. As long as its a new design and at least 5" at its longest pointed.
-
17 votes so far. Guess I should be thankful. Feel free to encourage everyone to vote folks. I do appreciate you taking the time to pick your choice.
-
Just put my vote in!
-
So, it looks like there are two frontrunners that are tied right now, scratch built vehicle and custom figure of ourselves. If there is a tie, why not offer both? We as customizers could choose one or both to do and it would be awesome to see some of the creative forces here make a figure of themselves with their own personal vehicle.
-
That sounds like a great idea! I agree!!!
-
Ok today is the last day to vote. Whichever one of these doesn't win will be the focus of our challenge next time!
Time to head out into the social world folks and lobby your friends to come vote for your top choice.
-
Just voted!!!
-
voted !
-
Well, it looks like scratch build a vehicle and yourself as a SW Action Figure both have the top votes. I have never tried a challenge with two themes before, but what the hey we can try it. I would rather have more entries than not! Give me some time to get this written up.
-
Yeah!! 0/
-
How is this contest going to be judged? Building a ship ain't like swapping heads on a figure. Its apples and oranges.
I'm willing to change my vote to figure of yourself just to cut confusion. Ship building isn't for everyone it's a labor of love. Given the option I believe most people here would go for the figure rather than the ship, making the challenge part of the contest obsolete. So I'll relinquish my vote for the greater good. Besides I've got a pretty cool idea for a custom of myself when I was younger that's a little more than a headswap.
-
probably a split of contest prizes one for the figure one for the ship...
-
Depends on the number of participants and prizes and so forth. I wouldn't be against two simultaneous challenges but you can only pick one or the other with the grand prize lotted to the winner of the ship contest, because let's face it its a lot more difficult to build a ship in a short amount of time. That's what makes it challenging. You take a gamble go with the figure for a 2nd/3rd prize or try building a ship/vehicle for the grand prize. I think it would result in more participants and make it interesting. Ultimately its up to Tamer he makes the executive decision. I'm just curious how it'll work.
-
Can we build ships that look like ourselves, or is that pushing it? :P
-
Folks, I will work this out in better detail by this weekend, but if we do go for two challenges at the same time there will be just one vote for the prizes and the top vote getter wil be the grand prize and so on, whether that be the build a figure or build a ship. I am also going to allot two months for this challenge just to give folks a bit more time to get their ship and or figure together.
Thats the thing with the vote, I was gonna just pick one theme and then do the other one next month, but I do agree the ship one will be more involved and will hence have less takers than the build a figure of yourself. So, we will go with how folks voted and hopefully get the most bang for everyones vote. I will get the details sorted and listed by this weekend.
As for how this one will be judged we will go with a vote and then tiebreakers will be determined by me and the prize donater (more on that soon). I can't wait to show you what we have in store for the prizes in this one. So, feel free to start building your ship or you as a SW Action Figure!
-
Can I build a ground vehicle instead of a ship?
-
I would say any kind of vehicle at any scale i think there should be a size requirement of at least 3 inches but its up to Tamer. I think he's working the kinks out.
-
That I am. I am trying to find time to make a graphic and then we can officially announce this.
As for the ground vehicle I would think that would be ok as long as it meets the size requirements.
-
Well it has been awhile, but is anyone up for a new custom challenge? Post your ideas here and then we can vote on em in about a week or so.
-
So I put some thought into this idea for a while, what if we picked a character, someone challenging, maybe hasn't rolled down a factory line, then all made that same character. One of the things I enjoy here is seeing how others attack the same characters as each other, or myself, for we all see things a little differently, and attack problems different ways.

I'm not as well versed in the EU as a lot of people here, but I do think this is a pretty fun idea all the same. I'd be particularly interested in seeing different takes on droids, as they are harder to just hack and swap, and allow for the inclusion for a lot more nonstandard parts so it doesn't come down to a matter of how many spare torsos you might have laying around.
-
I like these ideas. Let me make sure I have em straight
1. Non made character (everyone makes the same)
2. Droids (same version different takes?)
Mandalore25 do you have one character in mind for the challenge? Good ideas. I will leave this open for a few more days and then we can vote for the idea we like.
I am also thinking that instead of standard prizes I usually get that after the last challenge winner (Rezakai) for the TFA Hasbro Challenge that he decided he would like an eBay Gift Certificate. So I am thinking of these challenge prizes:
1st: $50 gift certificate to an etailer of your choice
2nd: $30
3rd: $20
Which will be decided on by a forum member vote when the challenge is over (thinking two months at this point from when we announce it).
Sounds ok everyone? I am really hoping we can get some good participation here.
-
Sounds fun to me!

I like the challenge the droids one sounds it will present, but am curious if it will stir people away as they're not as easy to work with, as much as I like a challenge, participation is important too. Still we could do astromech droids, say in a general, so you could make an ultimate one with a ton of accessories, base one off the concept art, make one from a different time period in star wars, or improve/reimagine the astromech. So same flavor different twists, pretty open for those to take creative freedom.
With the character, personally I was thinking someone like Revan, even though he came down the factory line already that figure is currently worth like $120, pretty doubtful anyone would use it. Thus making it interesting with no base for us all to start with, we'll have to choose our own. He also has a lot of fan art, and different takes on him to go off of, and can be portrayed as a man, or a woman even, so potential for many outcomes. Granted I'm biased as Revan is my favorite character, but I do believe he's a very open character to work with. That's my two cents on who, but as I mentioned before participation is important, so a second vote if this wins perhaps? Might take a while this way, but everyone's say is important, so if one does vote for this maybe submit one thought provoking character to work on? Then vote again if character wins? Just ideas, to get the ball rolling.
Prizes sound cool Tamer, gift certificates are a good idea.
-
There are a ton of unproduced EU sith too, aren't there? Might be a good pool to dip into.
I'm obviously also pretty partial to KOTOR characters. Carth, Atton, etc, although I don't know if supporting human characters without powers are as big of a draw to everyone. Seems like the Jedi, sith and interesting aliens are most popular.
-
I like the ideas here. Maybe our vote should just be what character everyone should make so lets do that. Right now the nominations are (all in 3.75"):
Nomi Sunrider
Ulic Qel-Droma
Rey
Starkiller/Galen Marek, from Force Unleashed (new costume)
Darth Revan
AT-AT Heavy Door Gunner (aka I.M.P.S.)
BB Series Astro-Mechs
Ajunta Pall
Freedon Nadd
Naga Sadow
Snoke
Jyn Erso
Carth
Atton
Darth Talon
TFA AT-AT Driver
REBEL T4-B Heavy Tank Crewman
This is the running list and we will add to it once I see new characters.
so give us names folks and I will put a voting thread together so we can vote by this weekend and get started on Monday!
-
Could get a jump on December and try Jyn Erso.
Alternate BB-unit astromechs, because BB-8 can't be the only one produced.
Or ancient sith? Ajunta Pall/Freedon Nadd/Naga Sadow
Snoke?
-

Snoke?
Not sure there is enough to go off of Jyn, I mean there's like 2-3 pics of her, but at the same time we'd all have literally no parts to work off of.
BB series astromechs sounds like many repaints, something more complex to show how each artist perceives things differently.
Freedon Nadd, and Naga Sadow (was thinking these two as well) have 2-3 different versions each to play off of, Ajunta Pall is depicted very plain, but still has two versions to use. Ancient sith could still yield some good options like Marka Ragnos has a couple versions to play with, and interesting helmet, and armor would be cool to see what people come up with, Exar Kun as well.
Snoke seems to shrouded yet, looks like the emperor with a different head, where this head would nearly require a sculpt that may make people shy away.
Neat ideas overall though, good input. Tamer did you want to make a front page post, and see if we can get more than the three of us in on this before we vote on a character? I could rattle off a ton of complex characters, but think participation will be higher if people get in on this from the beginning.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on any of those points to be honest, I'm just having a hard time thinking of a character that would be both interesting enough for people to want to participate, while still not having a production sculpt already. For all my thinking "I can't believe they didn't make X character," they certainly did make most of them.
-
This is a really good discussion so far, and some great ideas have been floated. Personally, I favor a category of character (such as the ancient sith idea) rather than one specific character (like Revan) as it allows greater creativity.
I just saw this post today, so I'm not sure that I've got any inspired ideas about classes of characters yet, however.
-
Good point about getting some more exposure in here. I like the characters presented so far.
Folks, make sure you give us the character name not just a general category like rebel pilots, sith, kotor, etc. Lets get specific here. We can let the vote sort out which one folks will do.
Off to the front page.
-
Where do we vote?
-
Where do we vote?
We're still nominating ideas, toss out some suggestions if you've got them! Voting will happen when nominations have closed.
-
Where do we vote?
Yepper right now we are just picking some characters. I am gonna be selfish and throw out
AT-AT Heavy Door Gunner (aka I.M.P.S.)
-
Ok, I put together the list so far and added a few more ideas I had. We can add any character you would like here and just let the vote sort out which character wins.
http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=9319.msg193361#msg193361
That is the location of the list so far. I will add to that as we get new characters.

Awesome! When a winner is picked , could we get a short bio for clarity? Just because I'm not totally familiar with what is the difference between a heavy door gunner and regular gunner, etc.
-

I was thinking something similar would be a good idea, at least pictures, for say Naga Sadow won, there are many pictures of him fighting Ludo Kressh, where confusion could pop up of who's who. So in general this would be a god idea for those who want to participate, but don't know the winner.
-
Starkiller/Galen Marek, from Force Unleashed would be a good idea, but there would need to be the stipulation in 3.75" scale it has to be a costume not made by Hasbro, though 6" would be open for Hasbro never made him in that scale. A very broad choice for he still has like a dozen unproduced costumes to work with, one character, lots of creative freedom.
-

Of course. I think that is a great idea. So whomever nominates a character, be ready to write the description if your character is the forum vote favorite!
-
Folks I am thinking we keep these all 3.75" to get more participation. I don't mind 6" at all, but am thinking totally from a what gets us the most entries doing this perspective.
-
Ooh what about characters from some older Tales of the Jedi comics, Nomi Sunrider, Ulic Qel-Droma, etc?
-
3.75" Rey
-
New characters added. I think the goal will be the get all the characters you would like to vote in here by noon on Friday and then I will create the poll and let that go this weekend so we can start the challenge on Monday!
-
I am setting up the poll now and locking it till we have it all set. Everyone who contributed characters make sure they are listed and let me know if I have forgotten anything.
I also added the Rogue One Enforcer Droid after seeing a pic of him today!
-
I may get in on this one depending on what final character is selected. Can't wait to see which one is picked!
-

Man I love I.M.P.S. so I think i may go/vote that way... but off hand a TFA AT-AT driver? I know they are in a few wide shots in TFA (the parade ground gathering and on patrol over the snowy area of tarkiller base) but I never saw their driver. Has it ever been seen previously in a photo/press shot?
-
I'm really liking this spread of ideas, I'm excited to see what wins! I hadn't heard about k-250 yet, nice add!
-

Nope, not that I am aware of. I would think it would be a cross between that new TIE Pilot with the standard AT-AT Driver, but that is what might make that character fun the different interpretations of a character we haven't even seen concept art of yet.
Also everyone is gonna get three votes so you don't have to just focus on your top one. You get your top 3!
-
The Door Gunner sounds like a nice project.
Am I missing the poll or has it not been set up yet?
-

Am I missing the poll or has it not been set up yet?
It is set up, I just have the voting locked until we wrap up the character nominations tomorrow.
-
Ok folks, I aim to wrap up the character nomination part of this by noon. If you have any other characters you want to vote on make sure to post here. Otherwise, I will open up the voting around noon and we can see which character is the favorite Monday morning so we can get started!
-
Ok folks the nominations are now closed. The poll has been unlocked, its time to vote for your three favorites!

That's good to know. I was searching for a pix of the gunner just as a reference but couldn't find anything.
-
Looks like the AT-AT Driver Heavy Door Gunner won the vote! Give me time to get this sorted and we will announce it later today.
-
FIXED! ;D at pt [at1]
Cant wait to get back into it.

Would have to say I'm a bit suspicious too when it was tied at like 2am this morning ;)
Oh well, close run, but should be an easy one now, he's pretty much a cross between the driver, and a snow trooper.
-
I.M.P AT-AT Door Gunner well looks like I'll be building a new one.

I was hoping to read this!

Ok folks, it has been awhile since we had a custom contest. What would you like to see us do to shake the rust off the hinges?
I had a thought about creating a tribute challenge for the actors we lost last year. We lost way more than Carrie Fisher.
Let the ideas fly and we will start the vote on Sunday. If we can generate enough votes (40 people participate in the vote) we will run the challenge.
-
Hmm tough order, I think the most I've ever seen vote in my 2 and 1/2 years here is low thirties, would be cool to brake 40, might have to push some fellow customizers to join up.
I'm partial to EU myself, but I do that all the time, maybe revisit Ultimate Figure we did two years back, broad categories tend to provide greatest turnout.
-
I like Mandalore25 suggestion on the Ultimate Figure this way I think we would get more people involved.

Ultimate Figure sounds promising. How about Mirror Universe? Han as a slaver, with a goatee. That kind of thing ;)
-
Maybe another no paint kit bash rally just to see if we can get any new members to try
-
No paint kit bash sounds fantastic. Or, what about an alien custom contest? Twi'leks, Togrutas, Rodians...
-
I'm down for whatever let the customs fly!
-
I am assuming the ultimate figure and other general categories are Star Wars correct?
I added what I thought these were to the poll based on your descriptions, if these are worded incorrectly please clarify and I will correct the poll choice which will be unlocked for voting on Sunday.
And yes, we will need 40 forum votes to make this happen so be sure to put the word out.
-
I figured doing Ultimate Figure again you could just copy and paste the rules from last time Tamer, though it would be worth mentioning last time a Diorama was required, I don't know if we want to axe that part, or not. I would like to hear others opinions, as I'm open to whatever myself.
-
We have a few more days to get this sorted before the vote which will start around noon on Sunday.
-
The vote in unlocked. We have until next week this same time to get 40 voters!

Ive been floating in the shadows for years on this site. Its been my homepage for longer than i made my membership. So no mater what i will do my part now. The competition must go on. Lol. Count me in even if its a kitbash if that helps. However im still not sure what exactly mirror universe and ultimate figure are. Either way I am in.

I can clarify Mirror Universe. It's a "what-if" or alternate version of Star Wars canon. For instance, Leia as a young farmgirl from Tatooine. Or Darth Kenobi. Maybe Jabba as trim and muscular. Lots of possibilities and potential fun.
-
If you look at our custom contest thread you should be able to see the description for ultimate figure too. And thank you for coming out of the shadows!
-
11 votes, we need about 29 more folks to get this challenge going!

I have decided to lower the number to 30, but we still need more votes folks!
-
Yeah kinda sad. I thought ultimate figure was a good idea. You don't have to do a whole lot of customizing. For example Ultimate Darth Vader would be cool, with interchangeable heads and hands, with his meditation dome thing. That would be rad.
-
I voted no paint kitbash.
That's right down my alley.
Wait, ultimate figure is cool, too.
Just got glasses today so I can see near again...just in case anyone wondered why I haven't been painting in a long time.
-
We still need 17 more voters to make this fly folks!
-
Cmon folks, we need 14 more votes to make this thing happen! :-X
-
Finally got my vote in - sorry for the delay. I've been running to catch up with myself for the last few months.
-
Got my vote in just now. Super busy lately.
-
Six more votes till this is a reality. Good deal. Spread the word Yarders.
-

-
Two more votes till this is a reality. Keep spreading the news Yarders.
-
Im going to go for Star Wars EU
-
Hey we have enough voters to make this a reality! I will let it run till Sunday and then we will announce the next custom contest. Trust me I have a few prizes squirreled away!
-
Announcement on the next contest coming soon.
