Post from Clonehead:
Yes, the word is that Guillermo del Toro is to direct and Peter Jackson is to produce the two Hobbit movies. Also, i now hear that the first movie is to cover the story of The Hobbit, and the second movie is to cover the 60 years inbetween that story and The Fellowship of the Ring? I do agree that Del Toro wouldn't be my first choice of director although I did enjoy Hellboy and Blade 2.

I wonder when things will really get moving with this movie? Are they even picking a cast yet?
-
At this time, Ian McKillian will reprise his role as gandalf in the first movie for sure. Andy Serkis will also return as Gollum. I don't believe that initial filming is to start untill next year. I do know that Peter Jackson will be helping write the scripts as in the LOTR trilogy.

As reported by theonering.net (http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009/04/17/31800-hobbit-movie-formats-confirmed-1-hobbit-2-films/#more-31800), Jackson and Del-toro have axed the idea of making the second movie about the 60 year span in between the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the ring as was previously planned. Instead, both movies will essentially be two halves of the Hobbit story.
This pleases me greatly as now, they can tell the story in greater detail. Unfortunately, that also means that we will have to wait till 2011, when the second movie comes out, until we get to meet Smaug, the dragon.

I can understand it, but hate to wait on the second movie. I hope they make Smaug look like a real one and not the hairy one we see in the Scooby Doo Movie.

I must have missed that one.
I remember in the Rankin/Bass hobbit cartoon that Smaug had a horses mane on his back and some porkchop sideburns............

thats the one I am talking about. Further releases of this with the ring chronicles used the voice of Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I call em the Scooby Doo LOTR.

Found a youtube interview with Peter Jackson here (http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2009/12/30/34791-peter-jackson-talks-lotr-the-hobbit/) where he talks a bit about LOTR and The Hobbit.

hard to believe that it has been two years since I posted in this thread.
the first Hobbit trailer for the first of the two movies was released yesterday and it is stunning. This looks to be better than I had dreamed and will reveal more than the book did.

Sweet, I can't wait to find some high speed to watch it.

I was kind of warry of this until the singing started, then I saw the trolls (OK just thier feet really but we knew who they were if you ever read the hobbit or saw the extended LOTR) and about freaked, Pulled out my huge copy of The Hobbit I had when I was a kid (First book I ever read, beutiful paintins in it as well) so now I'm stocked for this.
-
same here and they have brought a lot of the original actors in from LOTR trilogy to reprise their roles as well.
-
True but most are just cameos (ie Frodo just listening to Bilbo)
Then again one fun aspect is Gimli's dad is part of Bilbo's party LOL.
-
I just put up a new trailer for the second round of this on the front page so cool!
-
Literally over 35 years I have waited to see smaug in live action in the big screen, WOOT!

Try 45 years :P
I've read the Hobbit and LOTR almost a dozen times for myself and to my kids.
I just ant imagine where the third episode is going to go. After Bilbo meets Smaug, there are only about three chapters left in the book, and one of them is the journey home.
