Title: Grungy, filmy, exhaust, weathered, garage sort of look!
Post by: XTS_Operative on May 14, 2012, 12:22:58 PM
Hi,

I am getting ready to weather the walls in the diorama that I am currently building. The finish is currently a glossy turquoise color, and the walls have a subtle textured design,  but I want to give them a grungy, filmy look (like walls inside of a garage  that are dirty from exhaust and have never been washed).

I’m thinking  maybe a flat black and brown wash, with a 1 to 9 parts acryllic paint to water solution, then letting it run down the sides (?). I know this may not be the best technique, so I am looking for advice. I haven’t been very lucky with finding information on the web on the best way to do this…found lots of weathering videos, tutorials, etc, but none dealing specifically with the “look” I am trying to achieve.

Advice is appreciated! 0/

For me pastel chalks would be better for a textured look.
The paint would just look like a grease mark imho, the dry chalks would making more brake dusty space dirt look.

Chalk pastels would be great, I have a bunch left over from an art class I took a long time ago...In a galaxy er...

The finish is still a little tacky, should I use a spray fixative for the chalk? ()rr

Thanks,

Hello, and welcome to the Yards! I would use the pastels then seal it. Good luck!

Pastels are a good way to go but I probably would have used the paint streaked on with a paper towel, let sit a few moments then whiped off with a clean paper towel leaving some of the paint on

Agree with Spooky, I would have started with washes then used pastels as a final touch.

I never seal my chalks.
They never come off the project at hand.

I made a station for my fathers outdoor G scale trains. Never sealed the chalks and after many a rain storm there still there.

Well cool, good thing I'm just gathering info right now. I'll give the wash + chalk a try. Thanks,

Practice.  Try each separately.  Try both together.  Experiment.  Play.  Learn.
