Title: non Star Wars model kits (MQ-9 Reaper UAV 02/09/2014)
Post by: FialaFernbrugg on December 10, 2009, 11:20:18 AM
Beside Star Wars I also collect model kits. Here is my favorite of my collection, the Saab J35OE Draken austrian speacial (ostarrichi 996).

History:
Austria operated 24 Saab Draken. In 1996 the Draken with the number 08 gets his famous twin-tone colouring for the 1000th anniversary of Austria.

The model kit comes from Hasegawa scale 1:48

2ft wingspan, I think this is scale 1:48. I have a B-17G from Revell in scale 1:48 a very good kit. They made also the  B-17F (Memphis Belle) with scale 1:48.

Nicely built kit, FF! I also like non star wars kits but I am more into Armor and cars than planes. The execution of detail looks magnificent on that plane. That cockpit shot looks amazing.

Here is a link to my  non star wars custom  (http://www.imperialshipyards.net/SMF/index.php?topic=492.0) thread where I have some shots of some of my built kits.

May help you with details and historic background to watch it.

Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (JSF)

This kit from Revell is in scale 1:48. This is of course no easykit, glueing and painting is required. It includes about 45 parts, a construction manual and decals for three differnt versions. I build the fictitious Netherland-version. It was quite difficult to build, the landing gear is a bit tricky.
price: about 20€

information:
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation, single-seat, single-engine, stealth multirole fighter, that can perform close air support, tactical bombing, and air defense missions. The F-35 has three different models; one is the conventional takeoff and landing variant, the second is short takeoff and vertical-landing variant, and the third is a carrier-based variant.
The F-35 is descended from the X-35, the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is being principally funded by the United States and the United Kingdom, with other partner governments providing additional funding. It is being designed and built by an aerospace industry team led by Lockheed Martin with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems as major partners. Demonstrator aircraft flew in 2000, with the first flight on 15 December 2006.

Great job on the F-35 it looks awesome. Whats your favorite fighter plane, mine is the F/A-18E super Hornet. In Australia we have the F/A-18A Hornet and soon will be getting the F/A-18F and G super Hornet, The G is going to be a Prowler version. We still have the F111 in service but will be retired soon and replaced with the super Hornet until the F-35 is ready.

thanks a lot buddy

My favorite fighter plane is the Eurofighter EF2000 (Eurofighter Typhoon). Austria has now 15 Eurofighters in service for our aerial defence.
I work near the airbase where they are based, it is always great to see them fly.
The F/A-18 is also a great plane. I saw one at the Airpower 09, a big airshow here in Austria.

Sikorsky MH-60L Blackhawk

The Revell Blackhawk is my favorite helicopter in my non Star Wars model kit collection. The kit includes not less than 145 parts. You can build everything on this helicopter, each individual antenna, sensor and other small things. So it is not very easy to build and you must take your time for this thing.
You can build two different versions:
*Sikorsky MH-60L BLACK HAWK "Southern Comfort" 160th SOAR, US Army, September 2001, S.Nr. 26365
*Sikorsky MH-60L BLACK HAWK 160th SOAR, US Army 2001, S.Nr. 26334
I built the "Southern Comfort" version.
Austria has nine S-70A-42 Blackhawk or 'Alp Hawk' in service, I hope Revell make a kit of this version some day.
scale: 1/48
cost: about 20€

information:
The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972. The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61. The UH-60A entered service with the Army in 1979, to replace the UH-1 Iroquois as the Army's tactical transport helicopter.
What the LAAT/i for Star Wars is, is the Blackhawk for modern combat. The Blackhawk has pretty much the same duties and responsibilities as the LAAT has.

Are you kidding me!!! I used to love building model aeroplanes, especially WW1 and early 50's jets. Funnily enough my brother bought me a 1/24th scale Spitfire MkV a couple of years ago and that's what kick started all of the creative stuff I do now. The good thing about the Star Wars stuff is that I can give it to my kids to play with once I've finished, rather than putting it on a shelf to attract dust.

This is the Spitfire...

Tank Destroyer JAGUAR 1 (Revell 1/35)

The specialised anti-tank JAGUAR 1 with its HOT guided missile system was capable of precision attacks up to a distance of 4,000 m. It was a development of the Tank Destroyer 2 with anti-tank guided missile, based on the same chassis as the one with the anti-tank gun. With a 500 hp engine and a weight of 25.5 tonnes the JAGUAR 1 is an extremely manoeuvrable and speedy vehicle (70 km/h) that was in service with the Federal German Army from 1978 to 2005. In 1996, 90 were delivered to Austria.

Another awesome armor kit!  Is this kit a new release?  I don't remember the ad-on/applique side-armor panels being on the last one I looked at.  The Jaguar is just a nice looking vehicle to me.

My biggest tactical objection to the raketen jagdpanzer over the kanone jagdpanzer is the fact the gunner is exposed to reload the missile.  Altho, as an anti-armor infantryman, I do approve of that feature.   8)

wow Doc
You're a real "Raketenjagdpanzer" expert.
The new armor was on every Jaguar tank since 1982 (after the change from the Raketenjagdpanzer 2 to the Jaguar 1)
Unfortunately, all tanks (316 in Germany and 90 in Austria) are now out of service. Most of them were scrapped
I didn't know that you are an anti-armor infantry man. I was in an anti-aircraft (AA) battalion during my military service.
My next project (after some Star Wars customs) will be a "Flakpanzer Gepard"

Yep, anti-tank infantry in the US Marines (reserves).  When I was in (early 90's), we were equipped with the Dragon missile system.  Expert?  HA!  Far from that - just trained to look for exploitable weaknesses.  Oh, and something else I don't like about it as an amateur armor designer/wargamer is - only one launcher?  C'mon, guys - look at the Soviet BRDM family that could sling 4+ missiles before needing to reload!  (and reload under armor, iirc, scant though it might have been)

I guess either I simply haven't kept up with my 1/35 armor kits (which is very true) or the one Jagdpanzer pair of kits I saw were the earlier vehicles without the extra side armor (which is quite possible).

I have a large stash of modern and slightly-older subjects that I bought for building up to represent the militaries of several fictional countries some of us used to play online.  Maybe one day...

Flakpanzer Gepard (prototype West-Germany 1970)

The Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard ("anti-aircraft cannon tank Cheetah", better known as the Flakpanzer Gepard) is an autonomous, all-weather-capable German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG). It was developed in the 1960s and fielded in the 1970s, and has been upgraded several times with the latest electronics. It constituted a cornerstone of the air defence of the German Army (Bundeswehr) and a number of other NATO countries.

Gorgeous work! (as usual)  Did they use a Leopard I chassis for that?  Seems like I remember the French buying the turret and mounting them on AMX-30 bodies to supplement their Roland AA missile vehicles, but I might be off on that.  Crying shame the USA tried to imitate it with the "Sgt. York" vehicle rather than just taking the Gepard.  Much prettier lines.  Are any seeing service with ISAF?

It is a complete model kit made by Tamiya. The kit is from 1975 but the quality is still very good.
I'm not sure about the French army but the Netherlands and Belgium used a lot of Gepard.
It is no Gepard in ISAF service at the moment but the German army tried a desert camo variation on Crete.

Leopard 2 A6

The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank developed by Krauss-Maffei in the early 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and twelve other European countries, as well as several non-European nations. More than 3,480 Leopard 2s have been manufactured. The Leopard 2 first saw combat in Kosovo with the German Army and has also seen action in Afghanistan with the Danish and Canadian contributions to the International Security Assistance Force.

Since 1994 a first batch of 225 Leopard 2s have been upgraded to armament level A5. These vehicles received improved passive protection with wedge-shaped add-on armour modules on the turret, an electrical weapon stabilisation and aimisystem, a GPS vehicle navigation system and a rear-view camera at the back. The Leopard 2 A5s were handed over to the troops at the end of 1995. Since 2001 the vehicles have been completely upgraded to armament level A6, with a 120 mm L55 cannon that is approx. 1.30 m longer. In addition, further development of the ammunition should considerably improve the first round hit probability. Another 70 tanks will be equipped with improved mine protection and stored in readiness for use.

Glad to see you back in here. And of course glad to see your work. I love tanks. One of my first models I made as a kid was a WWII German Tiger. The Leopard is a great tank, it's almost as good as an Abrams, j/k. I love all your work Christoph, I'm always wondering what you're going to show us next.

It's good to be back in this great community

tamer:

Doc:
I've never tried 1/35 figures but I'll do my best do make a 1/35 german tank crew for size comparison pics

My next model project will be a LAV-AD. I guess all Battlefield 3 helicopter pilots know what I mean.

Trumpeter has a couple of sets of figures out - an ISAF crew and a KSK group - if you aren't adverse to assembling your figs like you do your vehicles.   ;)  Several companies have some nice resin figs, as well.  Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I've got my eye on several pieces of wheeled armor - Canadian Cougars (the 6-wheeled LAV version), Spanish Centauros, American M1117's and the like.  They fit into a fiction-world several of us used to play in.  Some of the models didn't even exist until recently, which makes me quite happy to see them now!

LAV-AD

Sorry gentlemen but still no new custom in sight.
I hope you like my LAV-AD from Trumpeter.

The light armored vehicle (air defense variant) consists of what equates to an Avenger turret mounted on the chassis of a light armored vehicle (LAV)-25. Its primary mission is to provide low altitude air defense against forces from airborne threats by fixed and rotary winged aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles capable of speeds of zero to 500 NMPH, at ranges within the envelope of the Stinger Missiles and the 25mm ammunition. A secondary mission is to provide ground defense against light armored mechanized forces.

MQ-9 Reaper

The MQ-9 Reaper (Grim Reaper) is a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) from the U.S. manufacturer General Atomics. It was developed in 2000 from the smaller MQ-1 Predator for use as an Aerial Support Drone (Hunter-Killer UAV). The first flight of the prototype took place on 2 February 2001. Initially designated Predator B the drone is four times heavier than the MQ-1 and can carry a ten times larger weapon load. Since February 2003 the new drone is officially referred to as the MQ-9A and since September 2006 designated Reaper. Rockets, guided bombs or additional fuel tanks can be fitted to four under-wing mounts. Four air-to-ground AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles can be used with the MQ-9 on twin carriers. The U.S. GBU-12 / B Paveway II precision bomb is an unguided bomb to which a laser guided Paveway II guidance and control unit is fitted.
The GBU-38 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) is another weapon upgraded by means of retrofit kit for precision bombing. Guidance is either through a combined INS / GPS system or a laser target designation system. After the Viper Strike GBU-44 the GBU-39 SDB (Small Diameter Bomb) is the smallest precision-guided bomb in use with the U.S. military. It has been in service since September 2006. The Reaper has sensors in the optical and infra-red spectrum as well as radar for reconnaissance and target acquisition. At the end of 2006 the U.S. Air Force activated the 42nd Attack Squadron at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada as their first Reaper Squadron. At the beginning of 2009 the USAF had about 28 Reaper UAV's. During the coming years procurement of an additional 60 MQ-9 is planned. The USAF has deployed its MQ-9 in Afghanistan since 2007. Each Reaper is controlled by a pilot supported by an intelligence officer from a central Command Post at Creech Air Force Base. A pilot at the Deployment Site only takes over control for the take-off and landing phases. With a typical armament for a Close Air Support mission consisting of two laser-guided 250kg GBU-12 Paveway II and four AGM-114 Hellfire missiles the Reaper can stay in the air for 15 hours. When necessary the detection tracking and combating of stationary or moving targets is possible by day and night. The 27th October 2007 saw the first use of an MQ-9 weapon system in combat. The Royal Air Force (RAF) uses its MQ-9 in Afghanistan, also controlled from Creech AFB, Nevada. The RAF will procure at least 10 Reapers. RAF Waddington will become their home base from 2012 onwards. Since the middle of 2011 the first two from a total of 6 MQ-9 ordered by the Italian Air Force have been ready for deployment from the Amendola Air Base. On 10 August 2011 Italy launced the Drone on its first mission over Libya. By March 2010 the 174th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard at Hancock Field Air Base in Syracuse, NY had replaced its F-16C's completely with MQ-9's.
